Tai-Kadai Map[edit]

You're certainly welcome to improve the map; after all, that's what SVG diagrams are particularly good for! I also prefer labels in place to a numbered key; that's a definite improvement. However, the "Northern Tai" label is smaller than the others, and isn't legible at the scale used in en:Tai-Kadai languages. Also, I'm confused about some of the changes in identification: the branch of Kadai languages in northern Vietnam have now become Northern Tai, while the former Northern Tai and Central Tai have merged to become only Central Tai. This leaves Northern Tai in between Central Tai and South-western Tai, which is suspicious. It also seems unlikely for Kadai languages to have been re-classified as part of Tai. Is it possible that some of the colors and labels are switched?

There's also something funny about the fonts. When I view the SVG, I see a serif font; but the bitmapped versions generated by Wikimedia come out with sans serif. This doesn't hurt anything, but it may mean the font you're using is not supported by Wikimedia. (?) --Amble (talk) 22:56, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic alphabetc[edit]

Hi Kwamikagami,

There is to kind of green dark green for solo official script and lighter green for the co-official script.

Hausa is not used in somalia but in some of central and west-african countries and Sudan.

Hausa is offical in Nigeria and it's written in:

 1. Boko (Latin)
 2. Ajami (Arabic).Ahmad2099 (talk) 09:31, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Calling my revert vandalism if false. Your edit summary which was given when you previously reverted a user doing the same thing is wrong. The United Kingdom is a Commonwealth realm! Saying that the United Kingdom would be a monarchy regardless of the Commonwealth is not a relevant edit summary. Even though is would be a monarchy without the Commonwealth, so would Canada, Australia, etc. Besides, Commonwealth realm and Commonwealth are two different terms. Please, if you don't believe me look for proof on Wikipedia. The articles "Monarchy", "Commonwealth realm" and "Monarchy of the United Kingdom" on Wikipedia all say the same thing and this was agreed to by hundreds of editors. To this day it has not been changed and has been the same for as long as that fact was edited into those articles. It is fact that the United Kingdom IS a Commonwealth realm and is just like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc. --Kushan I.A.K.J (talk) 19:41, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care about that. I object to all the other monarchies you deleted. (However, even the Commonwealth thing is not as clear cut as you seem to believe. The Queen as the direct queen of the UK is a different thing than in Canada, where she is only queen indirectly through the Commonwealth. If Canada were to withdraw from the Commonwealth, it would no longer be a monarchy. However, if the UK were to withdraw from the Commonwealth, it would still be a monarchy. So yeah, I guess I do care about this: the wording could be changed, but the color scheme is best this way.) Kwamikagami (talk) 09:42, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If Canada were to withdraw from the Commonwealth it WOULD still be a monarchy, Canada and the UK have no difference in status. --Knowzilla (talk) 07:07, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kwamikagami!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

BotMultichillT 06:01, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you made it straightforward to categorize things, as Wikipedia does, I would do it. But I'm not going to spend ten minutes per image searching for appropriate categories. Someone else can do it. If that's not acceptable, I'll just upload them to WP-en and let someone else transfer them here. You just end up deleting half my images anyway, and then I need to hunt them down and re-upload them to WP-en. Kwamikagami (talk) 17:38, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kwamikagami[edit]

Your behavior on en.wikipedia and now changing of language maps as you have done here, have lead me to write my opinion in this sight. At first, it will be nice if you wuoldn´t change well sourced maps which are used on much projects without discussing this on the talk page. In case of such edits, there are more wikies affected than just en.wiki, even those where this languages are spoken (bs, hr or sr wiki) or have been spoken. If you don´t agree with the map, you are free to make your own for use on en.wiki and others who accept your pro serbo-croatian view. I would just like to remember you that wikipedia is a multilanguage project and such edits on commons can be seen as POV edits (as they are) without consensus at global level. Please stop this behavior in his first steps and before this result in edit wars. Thank you for your understanding. --WizardOfOz (talk) 18:05, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with this. You should be more careful. mickit 20:34, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've already accepted that, and uploaded the corrected map on WP-en.

Wizard, you changed other corrections of mine here. The description no longer describes the image. Kwamikagami (talk) 06:29, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes indeed. As i wrote in the summary, it is a file about croatian and his dialects (iso 639-hr) and not about serbo-croatian (iso 639-sh) as you have describe. Even if those languages should be similar, it is a confusing description if the file name is talking about hr. Other user from hr.wiki has also commented on the talk page. The map, as shown, is incorrect. --WizardOfOz (talk) 15:28, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You changed Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, etc. from Blue to light blue? I am pretty sure English is the Majority language spoken in Trinidad. If an accent disqualifies the language as being "true English", should then only England be Blue and Australia, the US, and Canada also be light blue along with the rest of the English speaking Caribbeans?

According to Ethnologue, only 0.2% of Trinidadians speak English as their mother tongue. They say that the principal language is Trinidadian Creole, which is an English-based creole but not actually English. It's not an "accent", but a separate language, with separate roots. However, their figures don't add up, so something is wrong. I'll write and ask. (Our WP article also states that the principal language is creole.) File:Arab Spring map reframed.svg[edit]

Hi, I don't get why Iran is grey here but not other countries...? Protests in Iran had nothing to do with those of Arab countries. --Z 12:52, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They had a lot to do with it. The are widely seen as the precursor to the Arab Spring, and they have continued during the Arab Spring. I asked on the talk page what the grey was supposed to mean, and never got an answer. (Greece was grey, for example.) So grey Iran is kinda arbitrary. Mali is related, but more from inflow of arms than a social connection. I think this is s.t. we'd want to discuss on the talk page of the map: What is grey supposed to mean? What qualifies a country as grey?
I just checked to see if you had said anything on the talk page, and see that it has been deleted. I'd ask it to be restored, but I'm so tired of mucking around with Commons that I prefer just to keep things on WP-en and avoid it. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:56, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You reverted my removal of Malaysia and Ethiopia from File:Anglospeak.svg, with the comment "de facto official (language of education)". Have you got a source for that? English has not been the official language of Malaysia since the 1960's. English is not the official language of Ethiopia at the federal level, it is Amharic. Since neither countries has English as an official language, why do you place them in the light blue category of "Countries where it is an official but not primary language"? I don't quite understand the term "language of education", that seems to be beyond the scope of this image, and also there would be far more countries in the world where English is the language of education, especially at the tertiary/university level (e.g., Sweden, Taiwan all use English textbooks at this level). --Shibo77 10:15, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to go by analogy w other countries. English is the language of education in both Malaysia and Ethiopia. Perhaps we should have a third color for de facto use? The point of these maps is to show where a language is spoken, so use in education, govt, etc. is relevant IMO. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:44, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding states to maps[edit]

Hi, Kwamikagami! I'm interested in knowing how to add individual states to world maps (such as in the World marriage-equality laws map regarding the Brazilian, American, and Mexican states)? Thevastdarkness (talk) 16:31, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Brazilian states are all there, off the left edge of the map. When you edit, just scroll to the left until they come into view, and you can move over whichever one you want. To get them, I copied a map of the states of Brazil and resized and rotated it until it approximately matched the country on our map. However, I didn't do the best job; because it was the center of the projection, and on our map it is not, the individual states need more tweaking than that, and you'll need to resize and rotate them a bit when you move them over.
For Quintana Roo I duplicated the map of Mexico and then deleted all the nodes but the coast of Quintana; adding the nodes for the land borders was easy because they are all straight lines. Kwamikagami (talk) 04:00, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Portuguese language map[edit]

Kwamikagami,

Who do you think you are changing any language related item the way you want?! Did you see the talk you're referring to at all (as it is "coincidently" deleted now, my first guess would be you)? The talk gave clear arguments against the very edits you just came up with...no wonder you can no longer see it. It was even written in English so you could get a glance of what adults talked about (but note: only cause you're intellectually incapable of understanding anything else but you're mother tongue, that doesn't mean other sources of information are invalid). 141.13.170.175 13:58, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a point that's relevant to improving the file? A link to the file you're talking about would also be useful. Rants are not. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:26, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Israel on world state religions[edit]

Hey Kwamikagami, Could you change the status of Israel on the Map of State religions? The source used to designate Israel as a religious Jewish state is misleading. Israel is indeed a Jewish state, but the Zionist definition of Jewish is in fact an ethnic group, not a religion. Indeed, if we were to follow the Judaism as religion formula, the most notable spokesman of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, wouldn't be considered a Jew (he was atheist). Furthermore, the Jewish state never defines religious Judaism as a national religion in any sense (some Israeli Jews are Buddhists, for example). So it really shouldn't be on the map like that. --Yalens (talk) 19:36, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't add Israel, and am not current with the situation. But, for example, last I heard you couldn't get a secular marriage in Israel. That sounds like a state religion to me. Maybe you could take it to the talk page of the file, or of the articles that use the image on WP-en or WP-he? Kwamikagami (talk) 21:24, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Israel lacks both an official state religion and real separation of state and religion. It's true it doesn't have civil marriage for Jews (though if certain bills to pass, this may change soon). It also has various other elements of law that violate secularism- for example the privilege of dodging mandatory military service granted to yeshiva students. It should really be grey (one could make the argument for it being blue in a map that didn't have gray, as it doesn't have an official state religion, but this map is blue), I think... but I can't do it, right now at least.--Yalens (talk) 23:13, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This infographic map needs to be updated for accuracy. According to Reuters, there are three same-sex couples who have been issued licenses and married in Oklahoma despite official prohibition. --emerson7 | Talk 15:28, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

--178.3.23.189 17:29, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Kwamikagami, I saw your comments on my talk page. I just wanted to follow up with you. For Switzerland, if you look at the LGBT rights in Switzerland page, it is sourced as having passed step-child/biological adoption. The only part that goes unsourced is any indication of whether or not this law was challenged in a referendum. Maybe you could also take a closer look at the article from this link: http://dot429.com/articles/2444-switzerland-a-law-will-open-some-adoption-rights-to-homosexuals. From what I have mustered, the law passed and groups in opposition had the opportunity to collect the required signatures within 100 days of passage. From what I understand they didn't, so the law is "safe" from any referendum, the effecitve date however is not until 2016 so perhaps we could shade it, but add a footnote explaining this caveat. Chase1493 (talk) 10:23, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!
On the marriage map, we color in once the law is passed, not when it goes into effect. The UK, for example. I think we should have the same criteria for the two maps, though whether this way of doing it is a good idea is another question. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:33, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly, I know that in the past there has been problems setting precedence and synchronization for the marriage maps alone, so I wasn't sure if we wanted to carry over that into the adoption maps (and open up another huge debate in the process). My personal reservation to shading it is the how far off the effective date is. Three years is quite a long time for legislation to go into effect, which is just ridiculous in my personal opinion. Then agian, I'm not extrememly familiar with the swiss model of democracy other than the fact that it is heavily entrenched in the proportional and consensus styles. Chase1493 (talk) 22:47, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just followed the existing consensus on this. People have suggested a "passed but not yet in effect" color, but we'd need one for each kind of adoption, which starts making the map look rather busy (and the marriage map potentially even more so). Or maybe we could outline the country in such cases: make the border the appropriate color and really thick? Since I'm kind of responsible for both maps right now, I didn't want to remake them in my own image too much, but with this map in particular there seems to be very little interest, so it probably wouldn't matter. Do you have any ideas on good ways to show the legal progress without misinforming our readers, who will understandably think it's legal wherever it's shaded in? Kwamikagami (talk) 10:26, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure you remember that god forsaken yellow color that used to be used on the map with the idea of the topic being "under consideration" or "proposed." Obviously that was quite a mistake as it was to ambiguous and, in my personal opinion, people would rather see countries yellow rather than red or grey; when the reality was the topic had been dropped and some countries were still shaded months if not years after the fact. I was thinking that we could bring back a sole color to use for laws that will be going into effect in the future. We don't necessarily have to specify which kind of adoption, instead just use an ambiguous phrase like "Legislation expanding adoption rights has yet to go into affect." The only problem I see with this particular option is that if a country already has something like step-child or biological adoption it could incorrectly be interpreted as there being no kind of law previously present. So maybe use a new color to border countries that shows there is an expansion coming, but at the same time retaining the fill that shows the current legal situation? Or perhaps use our existing colors and outline states that will allow adoption based on type. So say Finland or Germany legalize full adoption rights we would keep the light purple as the fill and outline it in dark purple. Or if a country like italy legalizes step-child we outline it in light purple and keep the gray fill. Then all we would have to do is add a footnote explaining what the bordering colors actually mean. Chase1493 (talk) 20:19, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The last would seem to be the most adaptable. I've done that for the UK with marriage, so see what you think. (We now have it here for Swiss, but that's such a small country that it doesn't show up well.) Kwamikagami (talk) 07:31, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch territory marriage[edit]

With regards to File:World marriage-equality laws.svg, how can a couple be allowed to register as married but have this not recognised? I haven't seen the sources, but is this perhaps a situation where we could use the Federal USA colour? Chipmunkdavis (talk) 11:45, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know the details, and people don't seem to be sure. From what I gather, the local gov is required to register you, but not to extend any of the rights of marriage. It's to be revised if we can find some good refs. I just would rather not claim a state if we're not sure. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:10, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not missing either. Switz is there, just in outline as not yet in effect. Portugal passed but AFAIK not yet signed. Kwamikagami (talk) 05:58, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

World same-sex adoption laws: Utah[edit]

Hi, Sorry for bothering you but.. I noticed that you reverted "GayTenn"'s edits because they lacked a source. Well, I think I might have found some reliable sources if you'd like to take a look. http://le.utah.gov/~code/TITLE78B/htm/78B06_011700.htm http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/judge-strikes-down-utahs-same-sex-marriage-ban/2013/12/20/f032442e-69bc-11e3-997b-9213b17dac97_story.html (the second ref states that same-sex marriage was legalized in Utah but you probably already knew that.)
Sincerely, --Prcc27 (talk) 08:25, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Number 4 is where it gets a little bit tricky! --Prcc27 (talk) 08:35, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here's another source: http://www.utahlegalservices.org/public/legal_problem-en-us/family-law/adoption/begin-questions-answers-adoption but.. Idk, I'm not sure. --Prcc27 (talk) 08:57, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, if married couples can adopt, and gays can now marry, you'd think that married gay couples could adopt. But I thought there were laws against it, and I haven't heard anything about those laws being struck down. Kwamikagami (talk) 09:43, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, "Section 117 Who may adopt -- Adoption of minor" doesn't seem to prohibit same-sex couples from adopting. Maybe, but I don't think so. There might be other laws about adoption but I highly doubt it. I guess for now it's probably a little unclear... Prcc27 (talk) 01:52, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's quite possible the ban is now void, but given the pathetic state of our adoption maps before we started cleaning them up, and how difficult it's been to verify anything, I'd really like to have explicit confirmation before adding anyplace else. I'd hate to get anyone's hopes up only to be proven wrong. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:49, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What about adding Utah to the "No law either way" column on the Gay Adoption Map North America since it's unclear whether it's allowed or not?--Prcc27 (talk) 04:50, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We don't know that's the case either. It may be ambiguous, but the law may also be very clear. We need a RS on the status of adoption since SSM was allowed before we can say anything. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:25, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What about changing "No law either way" to "Unknown/ambiguous"? That's what the Same-sex adoption in the US map uses. Plus, it's more accurate that way. --Prcc27 (talk) 06:55, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Same-sex adoption: Arkansas[edit]

Arkansas might have to be added to the world map as well as the North America and United States map. http://www.hrc.org/files/assets/resources/parenting_joint-adoption_082013.pdf --Prcc27 (talk) 09:01, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I've seen that, but removed AR anyway. The site appears to be unreliable. It would be nice if we could just copy them, but I'm afraid that would just be GIGO. Since they footnote that particular case, it's might be okay, but I'd feel much more comfortable if we had confirmation. After all, AR might allow unmarried couples to adopt, but same-sex couple might not be protected under the law and might still experience obstacles. I don't trust that site to not have just assumed it was legal based on their own reading of a newspaper account of the court case. – Kwamikagami (talk) 21:16, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your deletion requests[edit]

Hi Kwamikagami, please stop nominating for deletion all files which are not in direct use. Files are often just completing a category, and their removing would cause an incompleteness there. Even redundant files should not always be removed, see there. Regards, sarang사랑 11:41, 12 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

They do not "complete" a category, they clutter it. Removing them would not leave the cat incomplete: that's what "redundant" means. They have no use, and are not part of a complete set of images that ever could have much use. Some of them are inferior img's created to fill gaps in our coverage which have since been corrected. So no, I will not stop nominating them for deletion. Now, if I have misunderstood the use of an img, that's another matter, and I'll rescind the nomination if you show me a reason for keeping it. State recognition of same-sex relationships in North America[edit]

Explain what you mean by "if people don't agree with your changes, then perhaps the problem is with your changes." Nobody said they disagreed with them. --Prcc27 (talk) 23:53, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you're arguing for a change, and not getting your way, creating a parallel map to bypass the discussion is not a productive approach. Kwamikagami (talk) 07:03, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah it is. In fact, if it isn't updated by March 20 (when the law goes into effect) then it (svg) outta be removed from all the wikipedia pages. It's inaccurate. The map is inconsistent from all the other maps (world, us, homosexuality, etc.). --Prcc27 (talk) 00:42, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

SSM in Mexico[edit]

Mind if I ask why you have reverted SSM in Oaxaca? The Mexican Supreme Court is the last resort. Fry1989 eh? 01:05, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to be the same situation as say, the New Jersey ruling last year except it's the national Supreme Court so no one to appeal it to. The isolated Mexican rulings are recognizing specific marriages, but Oaxaca's ruling now is to completely remove the ban on all same-sex marriages. CNN México article in Spanish, and I have put Oaxaca back. Part of the issue is that Mexican courts must issue a ruling 5 times in individual cases before it is binding state-wide; the first Oaxaca ruling to start the process was back in December 2012 and this is the binding decision. The lack of publicity compared to a US state decision doesn't clear up matters either.
A national decision or law in Mexico would be so nice to stop this sort of confusion. Dralwik (talk) 05:01, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Our claim is that gays are now free to marry in Oaxaca. The ref does not support that claim. In the US, a non-stayed court decision would mean that they are free to marry, but Mexican law is not US law. Declaring a ban to be unconstitutional does not logically entail that such marriages must be provided: the court only said that this ban cannot be used as a reason to not marry people. That doesn't mean that the state can't use other reasons not to marry people. We need a ref that people actually are free to marry now. That was true the first time in the US as well, but now that the precedent has been set, we know what to expect. We don't know what to expect in Mexico. Kwamikagami (talk) 06:20, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I can abide by that. Unfortunately with the lack of publicity around Mexican marriage laws, it's been over a week now since the ban went down and there seems to be no confirmation either way. If Oaxaca passes with no clarification, it might take a national ruling for every state to get some sort of clarification on Mexico. Dralwik (talk) 06:50, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

According to the BBC, the ruling does *not* make marriage open in Oaxaca: [2] Kwamikagami (talk) 06:48, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(Check the dateline on that article. That's the old ruling in December 2012, the first of five required decisions to make the decision binding. Not sure what the current count is.) Dralwik (talk) 06:50, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, you're right. (3rd out of 5.) It was given as a ref for marriage now being open. I was given three refs, but the other two didn't look very reliable. Let me see if I can dig them up. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:28, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A comment from 2012 on the Oaxaca article: "Oaxaca does not recognize same-sex marriage because its Civil Code is unmodificated by the Supreme Court resolutions. Until Congress of the State changes the definition of marriage in Oaxacan law, there is no possibility for new gay marriages in the state without an amparo of the Supreme Court." That may now have happened, but I think we need a RS saying so. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:50, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Gay Star News[3] repeats what I've seen elsewhere, and doesn't say anything about marriage being available now. It just says the ruling "paves the way" for same-sex couples to marry in the state, and that,
Oaxaca’s Office of Vital Records has said it will abide by the court’s decision and urged lawmakers to act in line with the court’s verdict to provide a legal framework by which same-sex couples may marry.
‘It is time to modernize our laws and our institutions have to adapt to changing times and conditions, because we are being overtaken in the new circumstances,’ Oaxaca director of Vital Records Clarivel Rivera said according to e-consulta.com.
Same-sex marriages are performed by the federal district of Mexico City and the state of Quintana Roo.
So it would seem not Oaxaca, not yet. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:04, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for double-checking that; I'll defer to your judgement on Mexico in the future. There are multiple US rulings expected in the next few weeks, so we'll have more definite changes to the maps soon (potential marriage in Oregon, stays in Arkansas, Indiana, the outcome of the Tenth Circuit for Utah and Oklahoma, etc.) Dralwik (talk) 00:12, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I really know nothing of Mexico; I just wasn't satisfied that the refs supported our claim. I was suspicious of the same thing the first time this happened in the US, but that time I was wrong. Better safe than sorry, though. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:38, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In what universe does the copyright status of a CC Commons map need to be verified? This is the reason I tag nearly everything I upload as 'keep local', so they don't get moved to Commons and deleted by idiots. I didn't realize I had to do the same with obvious modifications of things already at Commons. From now on I'll know better, and will upload even Commons material locally, with instructions not to move them to Commons. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:10, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Same-sex marriage map[edit]

Please take your changes to the talk page. The map has in recent history coloured countries gold only after legal action rather than mere announcements as those have no legislative basis to back them up. One party of person does not get to decide whether or not a law is legalized in one country. There is a legislative process and very often laws do not get passed. The map now colours countries gold after it is certain that a law will be entered into force. --Growupon (talk) 07:05, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

When there's a court decision and the govt announces it will abide by the decision, we indicate that on the map. The lighter color is because the other govts may not abide by the decision, but I'd still be curious which they are. Pls don't revert unless the changes are factually wrong (e.g. a country did not say it will abide, or a country is not subject to the court). Kwamikagami (talk) 23:02, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the recent history of the map, the map no longer changes countries to gold just because of "announcements" without any legal action to back it up. It is much more certain and straightforward that way. One person or ruling party do not get to decide or announce on laws in a country, there is a legislative process that exists. Once those laws are passed they will be changed to gold as they await the date of enforcement. Plus if you say something like "I'd still be curious which they are" there must be a consensus on such issues. Please stop edit warring until you reach that consensus. --Growupon (talk) 04:43, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Stop screwing with the map. I'll edit-war all I like -- this is not WP with its 3RR. And of course there is legal action -- what do you think the court decision was? If my edits are factually incorrect, show me, but IDONTLIKEIT is not evidence. If you don't want a map that shows legal actions like this, then make your own map. Or make a convincing argument on the talk page. As for announcements made without any legal backing, I suspect you're referring to announcements by ruling parties that have the power to enforce their will, as in Chile. But that's not the situation here. (Also, I'm not convinced Taiwan should be gold, or that Nepal shouldn't be, but I'm too ignorant of those situations to argue one way or the other.) Kwamikagami (talk) 07:45, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that you're saying "I'll edit-war all I like" shows your disregard and unwillingness to co-operate and discuss the changes that you make. I left a message to the comment you left on my talk page. If you continue edit-warring and pushing your version of the map without any discussion or consensus then you will be reported. --Growupon (talk) 11:28, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Report me for what? I am willing to cooperate, but "cooperate" doesn't mean to do whatever you want. You need to show me that your version is an improvement. Unless you're able to do that, the map stays as it is. Of course, you have every right to create your own map if you don't like mine. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:02, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cooperating means starting a discussion and coming to a consensus on your changes. You are the one adding the new information so you cannot say the map "stays as is" as your version is the new one and it is you who must prove that it is an improvement. I see now that you have replied to a discussion started by a different user but you still reverted the map and continued to push your version without getting any consensus despite me warning you that your continuous edit warring will lead me to reporting you, which I have now done. --Growupon (talk) 19:37, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You don't seem to understand how things work here. I contributed this map, so I decide what goes on it. If you want a different map, then you should create one. Then you can decide what goes on it. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:51, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It’s wide usage still calls for a consensus on major changes. Either way there is a discussion on the talk page now so I will comment there, no point of keeping this argument going here. --Growupon (talk) 04:17, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help to block sockpuppet[edit]

Hello,

Due to my limited knowledge of how to block a sockpuppet, I thought you could help me out. If that's not a problem.

User:Growupon was blocked on Wikipedia for sockpuppetry in October 2017 (investigations here), but their Commons account hasn't been blocked. Do you know how to report them? All the other sockpuppet accounts are currently blocked indefinitely on both Commons and Wikipedia. (User: Turnless, User:Leftcry, User:KronosLine, User:WhyHellWhy,...)

Here is a list of all the other sockpuppet accounts.

Thanks,

Hello.

Can you add South Sudan in these maps:

File:Official English language in the World.svg
File:Official Spanish language in the World.svg
File:Official French language in the World.svg
File:Official Portuguese language in the World.svg
File:Official Portuguese language in the World.svg
File:Official Arabic language in the World.svg
File:Official Chinese language in the World.svg
File:Official Russian language in the World.svg
File:Official German language in the World.svg
File:Official Italian language in the World.svg
File:Official Dutch language in the World.svg

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files, now it is reduced to 900 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Thank you.

Maphobbyist (talk) 22:26, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Maphobbyist: SVG files are a pain in the ass to edit. There isn't good software support that I know of. You might want to ask at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop. They might be able to automate the charge to any maps where Sudan is left blank. Or even where Sudan isn't blank,, it would then be a simple job for you to adjust the color of SSudan where needed. Thank you for your reply and advice. Maphobbyist (talk) 20:39, 9 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why not? If you insist on obedience without providing sources, you are an idiot.
I've asked about both countries, but the sources seem to support their inclusion. Certainly that's where the WP-en articles stand now. If you believe that info is wrong, then take it to the talk pages. If you provide convincing evidence and get the articles changed, the rest of us will follow suit. @Naraht: . Isn't that a bit premature? I'm having trouble seeing that in the article. For example, it says Ahora, en este nuevo caso se prevé que el alto tribunal pueda emitir una declaratoria general de inconstitucionalidad. That sounds like a forecast. Papuan Languages[edit]

Since you're responsible for most Papuan maps on this site, I was wondering whether you could revise my map of Papuan Languages based on Usher (2018). The resource I used to make that map combined Kwomtari and Fas, so I'm not sure how accurate the split is. I also realized too late that the map I used as a base didn't use Usher's TNG branches, unfortunately I don't have a really good image software on hand. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewGuineaSelonUsher.png MToumbola 9:47, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Maybe you could check the Ethnologue maps for the split? I won't be able to get to it any time soon.

I just used that base map because it was handy, but really, I suspect it's quite inaccurate. E.g. Gogodala-Suki seems to have a rather different range than shown. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:03, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Maphobbyist (talk) 18:00, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Borneo gap is in the .de map too. Can you ask the person who created the maps? It will be a while before I can get to this.

As for editing the maps, I just use Inkscape. The map people here don't like it because it introduces all sorts of garbage and errors into the files, but it's the only tool I have. It's shareware, so you could use it just as easily. (It's slow to open, though, so you need to be a bit patient when you start editing a file.) Japan[edit]

Please stop adding Japan to maps with LGBT rights and making changes to documents about Japan that are inaccurate. Please engage in the thread I invited you to, to resolve the issue rather than repeatedly pushing contradictions in our coverage. Whether or not we should cover certificates with voluntary adherence is an opinion that we should discuss, not a fact that you can decide for us. But being inconsistent in how we represent different countries is simply unprofessional. Kwamikagami (talk) 05:57, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Curaçao and Sint Maarten[edit]

Hi,
On File:Same-sex legislation Lesser Antilles (named).svg, you coloured Curaçao and Sint Maarten a light-violetish shade for "recognition for foreign spouses". But according to w:Same-sex marriage in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, couples also have access to government health insurance schemes. So shouldn't the two islands be coloured with the "limited recognition" colour instead? Jedi Friend (talk) 09:58, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that would take precedence. Any idea about Slovakia? Our article feels like it's incomplete to the point of being untrustworthy, but it sounds like there's some recognition even if not to the extent of Poland. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:04, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really know. Based on the WP article, it does seem like some additional rights are granted. Jedi Friend (talk) 15:44, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Same-sex marriage map Europe[edit]

Hey, I really like how you separated domestic and foreign legal rights, but the colours are hard to distinguish between each other (probably because they have to be hatched with constitutional bans as well). Do you think you can change it to another colour? Thanks! --Ratherous (talk) 17:25, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ratherous: Yeah, I noticed that as well. Those are the colors that we use on other maps. Can you make any suggestions? Since to be responsible, if I change the colors on one map I should do the others as well, as well as all of the keys in all of the language projects that use them -- which will be hours of work -- I'd rather not try something that doesn't work or that people won't like, and have revert it or do it all over again. One simpler possibility would be to change the striping from 50%-50% to 67%-33% -- the red is so bright that it should be visible even if it covers 1/3 the area rather than 1/2, and dark enough that that should be true even for the color-blind. I can go ahead and try that, which wouldn't require changing anything in the articles. Kwamikagami (talk) 17:48, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay yeah maybe give that a try and let's see how it looks. --Ratherous (talk) 17:59, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How's that? Reduced to a 3:5 ratio. can reduce further to 1:3 if this isn't enough. (An in-between 1:2 ratio would require more fiddling, but can do that if 1:3 is too much.) Kwamikagami (talk) 18:11, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I think that's a lot better. I still reverted because the other changes are unnecessary to the map, but if you could upload a version just with the colour changes that would be great!. Thank you! --Ratherous (talk) 18:39, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, redid it, with corrections. Since a constitutional establishment of islamic law, which in some countries is limited to family law, constitutes a constitutional ban on SSM, I colored those countries red. In Israel, Lebanon and Jordan, sharia only applies to Muslims. Tunisia and Algeria are 'secular', but the Algerian ref to islamic morals constitutes a ban. I didn't restore Armenia to foreign rec because there haven't actually been any marriages recognized by Armenia. Foreign rec color is purple to match other maps. I removed the dot from Faroes, though I don't see the harm in it, but since they're all smaller than the Isle of Man, I removed the dot form it too. Otherwise it looks like the Faroes aren't a country. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:50, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I actually double checked the constitutions of those countries and none of them had any explicit bans on same-sex unions, or any recognition of same-sex couples for that matter, so I changed the bans back. Many legal statues have 'man and woman' but that's different from a constitutional ban. Also about Isle of Man, I actually thought about removing the dot before too but I think it's hard to notice it because the Faroes are more spread out so it's easier to see them but this is a single island so it looks smaller, so I brought it back. I also wanted to ask if you removed the disputed status of the Golan Heights by accident and if you could possibly bring it back to the map to keep it neutral. Thanks for all your help! --Ratherous (talk) 04:13, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'd checked the constitutions for several of them myself. Any constitution that establishes Islamic law has a ban on SSM. If you color the countries grey, you're claiming they do not have a ban, which you have not established. There would need to be an exception to Islamic law for SSM, which as far as we know none of the countries have. So that is unacceptable as OR, unless you actually have sources. Your claim that Saudi and Iran have made exceptions to Islamic law to allow SSM is rather unlikely. So I reverted your changes. It would be easier, of course, for the SSM in Europe map to be about SSM in Europe, but if we're going to include other countries, we can't make false claims about them. Kwamikagami (talk) 05:26, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rv'd further, per the 3rd-party opinion on the talk page that the map should be limited to its subject area. Easier than debating constitutional law for irrelevant countries. Kwamikagami (talk) 05:45, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad that you have listened to the fact that same-sex marriages are not recognized in Armenia and Estonia. Now examine the question that the Constitution of Ukraine repeats the Constitution of Russia and does not prohibit same-sex marriage. --Марк1978 (talk) 15:30, 25 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Марк1978: as always, it would be helpful if you provided some evidence for your claims. How is the following not a constitutional ban on SSM?
Стаття 51. Шлюб ґрунтується на вільній згоді жінки і чоловіка. Кожен із подружжя має рівні права і обов'язки у шлюбі та сім'ї.

extIPA and VoQS charts[edit]

Kwami, as much as I would also love to see the extIPA and VoQS charts on Wikimedia projects, false attribution is definitely not the way to go. (I mean, the metadata literally say "Author: Martin J. Ball".) Taking copyright lightly is dangerous to the projects because it undermines their standing and makes them all that more vulnerable to litigation and criticism. If you really want to do this, you need to contact the copyright holders (ICPLA and Ball, Esling & Dickson, respectively) and ask them to release the charts under a compatible lisense like CC-BY-SA, either directly on their website or through OTRS. Unless you can obtain such permission we cannot host the charts here. Nardog (talk) 07:31, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually not false attribution, per the email I sent you. Since the basic charts are not copyrightable, how much modification is required to use them? Kwamikagami (talk) 08:47, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

China?[edit]

Hi,
By any chance, do you know whether the new Chinese guardianship system applies to Hong Kong and Macau as well? Jedi Friend (talk) 17:40, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jedi Friend: Sorry, no. I colored Macau on the map, but that was just an assumption. Kwamikagami (talk) 18:08, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a search. I assume you have as well. Can't find anything. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:34, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find anything either, unfortunately. I've even found the law itself, but still nothing. Jedi Friend (talk) 09:15, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good find!

National laws don't necessarily apply to Macao, so coloring it blue on the map like I did is OR. But then we have no source it doesn't apply, so grey would also be OR. I suppose we could just remove the dot for Macao, and gloss over our ignorance like we do for the many US reservations for which we have no info. Kwamikagami (talk) 11:08, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

South Korea[edit]

Do you think this source means South Korea should be treated like China or Japan? Jedi Friend (talk) 15:08, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jedi Friend: Thanks for the link. There's more info there than in English-lang sources. I added S. Korea to the infobox list on WP-en. For the map, maybe striped light purple? It does seem to be a general law, so a ring wouldn't be appropriate, but it doesn't apply in general, so a solid color wouldn't be appropriate either. It's kinda like getting an amparo in Mexico. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:23, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, done. It didn't seem a big enough deal in the English news to mark it, but it makes sense now that you bring it up. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:22, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

Chechnya needs to be corrected in File:Asia homosexuality laws.svg, File:World laws pertaining to homosexual relationships and expression.svg, File:World homosexuality laws.png, File:LGTB en Europa.png and in other map where it is erroneously shown as having the death penalty. Chechnya is de-jure and also de-facto (it is no longer a breakaway state since 2000) part of the Russian Federation. The federal Russian LGBT laws apply in Chechnya, like all federal Russian laws. There is no death penalty for being LGBT in Chechnya, because the death penalty is abolished in the entire Russian Federation. That is why Chechnya needs to be colored in beige like the rest of Russia. It is true, that LGBT people are most persecuted in Chechnya, but that is a separate subject, separate from the legal status of LGBT people as a whole in Russia. The persecution of LGBT people are extrajudicial (illegal), in the form of arrests, torture and extrajudicial killings by family members or pro-Chechen government gangs. You should add a note on the map pinned on Chechnya providing a link to the persecution of LGBT people.

Yours sincerely, 31.200.18.23 23:33, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.
Can you correct Chechnya in these maps and in other related maps, please? Extrajudicial killings (which is the case in Chechnya), is not the same as legally sanctioned execution, which doesn't exist in Russia, including in its constituent republic of Chechnya. Please see the sources.
Yours sincerely, 31.200.20.204 15:01, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I did the world map yesterday. I'll get to the others. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:25, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can you also update the PNG version of the SVG world map File:World homosexuality laws.png? That will be all. Thank you again for your works. (I think I should create an account, even though it is my private home I.P., not a shared one.) 31.200.13.135 06:34, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That map's 10 years out of date. I'll leave it as a historical record. Kwamikagami (talk) 07:06, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. A user has since requested a name change by adding the year to this file, the year it was last updated, which has been accepted and applied to this map. The same renamings have been done to the other obsolete LGBT maps.
Separately, and this is my last request, can you remove the internal borders of the UK in File:Parejas del mismo sexo en la UE.svg?
There is no longer a reason for keeping the internal borders of the UK anymore, after same-sex marriage became legal in Northern Ireland, just like in the rest of the UK.
Yours sincerely, 31.200.21.123 19:19, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Merging the UK together would be a bit of a pain, actually, and they are legally 4 countries. Besides, it looks like the UK will soon be removed altogether and the issue will be irrelevant. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:24, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You are right of course. I too was thinking about Brexit and whether to ask about editing the UK at all on current EU maps. But I wasn't sure until the election results. Now, it looks very likely, that the UK will leave the EU in less than two months, and it will be removed from hundreds or even thousands of current EU maps. That sounds like a very daunting and unwelcome task in Wikimedia Commons. Thank you for all the corrections in the maps. 31.200.13.55 11:03, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kwamikgami.

Can you correct Syria in File:Arabic speaking world.svg? The area the Kurds control is erroneously shown like a separate country with a distinct border. However, the area the Kurds control, is neither a de-facto breakaway state (unlike for example Somaliland, which is not shown), and is much larger that their traditional homeland of Rojava which borders Turkey, and which has since been largely occupied by the Turkish military in October. The area the Kurds now actually control, is predominantly Arab. Since Kurdish is not an official language of Syria, nor claim a separate state, Syria needs to be colored in green.

Maphobbyist (talk) 20:21, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It should perhaps be dark blue, but all languages spoken there are official, with Arabic and Kurmanji used for official purposes. Unless the entire country should be dark blue, to eliminate the border. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:47, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In the area the Kurds control, both Arabic and Kurdish are official languages. However, the territory they control is not a de-facto state either. De-jure, Arabic is still the sole official language of Syria. Hence the complication, because the color codes in the map have not been catered for this situation. Maybe it is better to color Syria green to show the de-jure status, but add an explanation in the text of this file, to explain its peculiar situation. Maphobbyist (talk) 21:07, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's not a de jure state, but it is a sovereign territory, and Kurdish is one of the official languages. So IMO we need to indicate that. I thought a portion of the country would be best (obviously it's not a separate country, I guess I expect people to know what Syria is), but maybe striping or some other remedy. But I think it should be something on the map. Otherwise we might as well go with list of countries and dispense with the map altogether. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:23, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, stripes for Syria is a good solution. It will indicate the actual situation of that country, without having to change the whole color scheme and categorization of the map. Maphobbyist (talk) 05:06, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Any redrawing or coloring, that doesn't show Syria as split in two with the white international border (the main reason) should be applied. Because the current version will add to confusion, as the areas of control also changed and still change. Maphobbyist (talk) 07:41, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I agree. I'm just a bit backed up on the maps right now. If you know svg, it's pretty straightforward to copy the stripe formatting from another map. Kwamikagami (talk) 07:52, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, because I am SVG illiterate, I cannot do these changes in SVG maps. That is why, as the latest uploader of this map, I wrote to you. Maphobbyist (talk) 18:59, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. Maphobbyist (talk) 19:34, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Same-sex marriage map Europe detailed.svg[edit]

Hello Kwamikagami!

I just reverted your edition in File:Same-sex marriage map Europe detailed.svg. I was adding far more information than just the Vatican. For example, among other changes, I added the titles of all the countries that appear in the map, I changed the colour of grey so all the countries have the same tone, I changed the layer of the channel islands or I added the jurisdiction of Mounth Athos, that is an independent entity of Greece with its own laws.

About the Vatican, it should have a big dark-grey dot, and not only a small white dot. It should be a big one, because it is an independent country, just as Andorra, Malta, San Marino or Monaco. The small dots are only for dependent territories, such as Ceuta or Akrotiri. And it should be dark grey, because it is a country that belongs to Europe and does not recognize same sex marriages (and also it does not ban it in its constitution, so that is why it is not red).

If you need to add more changes, please, use the last file I uploaded so all the work I did until now is not lost. And let me know if you do not agree with the representation of the Vatican and why.

Best regards, --DaddyCell (talk) 14:17, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DaddyCell:

There's another sovereign "country" in Rome, the Knights of Malta. Neither are "countries" in the normal sense of the word, since they don't have their own populations. If they don't allow marriage, who is affected? Besides, the Vatican has complete marriage equality -- it doesn't allow any marriage at all. Therefore the grey color is misleading, just as it would be misleading to use it for Antarctica or the open sea, neither of which have a law allowing SSM. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:13, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again!
Yes, I knew about the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. But I do not think it is a problem not to show it in the map. Basically, because more than a country, it is just a subject of international law. Even, it does not have its own territory, so it would not be possible to mark it in a map. The Palazzo Malta and the Villa del Priorato di Malta, that are their two headquarters, are not their territory. These two places belong to Italy, although they have granted extraterritoriality. So they are just like embassies, and no other embassy is marked in the map.
In the other hand, the Vatican City is a full country, with territory and population. So it is perfectly showable in a map. About marriage, the Vatican City do offer marriage, but it is regulated in its Code of Canon Law. You can find many pages in Google that offer the answers about how to get married in the Vatican City.
About the color, as the "Constitution of the Vatican City" does not mention any kind of marriage, the map of the Vatican should appear in grey, as red is reserved for countries that prohibit SSM in their Constitution.
The case of international waters that you mention, would not be possible to show in a map. Jurisdiction of the ships in the open sea belong to the flag state that is showing that ship. So two ships in the same point of the sea can offer or not SSM, depending on the country that they belong to.
The case of Antartica is more complicated, as several countries are marrying people in their Antartic bases, but none of those the territories belong to any of those countries. So, juridically, it is going to be the same case as the embassies, and they do not need to be shown in the map. But I think the File:World_marriage-equality_laws_(up_to_date).svg is not going to mislead anyone, as Antartica is white in it.
Best regards, --DaddyCell (talk) 16:03, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@DaddyCell: No-one said anything about coloring the Vatican red. Cannon Law is for how priests marry other people, not for the Vatican itself. Vatican citizens cannot get married, and if you're married you can't become a citizen, so in that sense the Vatican itself has marriage equality even if the church does not practice equality in other countries. But that's a difference between the Vatican and the Holy See. Kwamikagami (talk) 07:49, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, there are citizens of the Vatican that can get married too. Not all the people in the Vatican are part of the clergy. Even, for those that are not, citizenship is offered to their spouses and close family during the time they are working there. You can check several articles online that explain the situation, like this, or this. --DaddyCell (talk) 11:02, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like I was misinformed about that, and probably not worth trying to retrace where I read it. But I wonder, if citizens are priests and Swiss Guards, neither of whom can get married, which citizens exactly are marrying under Vatican law? Kwamikagami (talk) 11:20, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Faroe Isl.[edit]

Hi, I say the nice map of the Faroe Islands, with Suðuroy marked in yellow, denoting that this island is to be connected when the Suðuroyartunnilin is built. However, also the island of Skúvoy would be included in this tunnel, so that could be marked yellow too.

The official map we have does not show a link to Skúvoy. Is it outdated? Kwamikagami (talk) 21:33, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, do you think you can update this svg? Bolivia does not offer civil unions to same-sex couples at the moment. A court recognized the union of a couple in December 2020, however, so far that couple has been the only one allowed to register their union.Freddy eduardo (talk) 17:42, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Also fixed Venezuela, where AFAIK the govt's still split. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:41, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, can you update these images? In Mexico Sinaloa and Querétaro legalized equal marriage. You can guide you on File:Same-sex marriage in Mexico.svg to guide you. Thanks. 🙂 --Gabomiranda (talk) 22:00, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bolivia[edit]

Kwamikagami because they stripped Bolivia of the civil union, if since a couple was recognized through free union under the constitutional court of the State it has been recognized and that also opens the doors for the rest of the couples to civil unions. For you to check here are the sources.

I'm the one who added the striping. However, someone objected (two threads above) that it's not possible to get CU's in Bolivia. Only one couple have one, due to a direct court order, but other couples have been refused. Therefore coloring Bolivia blue would be misleading, and I reverted myself.
If you have sources that CU's are now open to other couples, I'll be happy to restore the blue. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:36, 25 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Uncategorization[edit]

Be careful about stunts like this. -- Tuválkin 15:01, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What stunt? It's an unused PNG that's been replaced by SVG. As such, it should be categorized as a replaced file. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:16, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to waste that kind of time for minor cleanup. And you shouldn't misuse terms like 'vandalism'. If you don't know what the word means, you shouldn't use it at all, or we'll all be calling each other vandals. But I can put them it child cats. It's an easy enough fix. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:16, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 • (Edit conflict) I just noticed that you removed all specific categorization for the many files in Category:Asteroid symbols obsoleted by SVG replacement leaving it as the only cat in them. That’s not correct and you should reinstate all removed categorization ASAP. Please note also that all files marked for replacement in such mantainance categories should include Vva or somesuch linking to the purported replacement file. Avoiding “cluttering” is not a proper concern in categorization — ugly files should be visible in a repository, too, and if they are useless they should be deleted, not sweeped under the rug. -- Tuválkin 10:26, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See the above. I don't want to get into a month-long debate over whether each of those files should or should not be deleted. But if you feel it's important, you're welcome to spend your time on it. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:27, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 • Please clarify: Are you saying that you wrong work on DRs for these uglier files, or that you wont (re)categorize them with anything other than generic trashbin invisible maintainace cats? -- Tuválkin 20:54, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what either of those means. I can nominate the entire category for deletion, but don't want to spend a month debating it. BTW, I removed the 'obsoleted' cat from the historical images. Those are still relevant, as a non-OR guide to what they might should look like, even if we never use them on WP. To clarify, I moved them to names that include their date of publication. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:59, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 • Looks like you’re trying very hard to get yourself in AN/U and be blocked. Don’t expect me to come to the rescue of a fellow weird symbol enthusiast: You meak too many mistakes and you’re not willing to learb anything. -- Tuválkin 21:16, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Since you obviously don't know what you're talking about (e.g. accusing ppl of vandalism for cleaning up Commons), I can't take you seriously. Call in someone who knows what they're talking about if this is important to you. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:22, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 • (Edit conflict) I see some of what you did. Still wrong. (Sigh.) Seriously, how hard can this be?! Even if your goal is to move all the “ugly” images away from the main categories to separate trashbin cats, you still must create separate child cats for each of the main cats you want to keep “pretty”. For example, those the two ugly PL monograms: Putting them into Category:Pluto symbols obsoleted by SVG replacement is okay but you should remove them off Category:PL monogram for Pluto only if you created a Category:PL monogram for Pluto obsoleted by SVG replacement — and the same for all other “ugly” files. Which is just nonsense, creating a lot categories with very few files in them with the goal of “prettify” cat pages, which is contrary to COM:CAT: If you want a pretty page, leave the cat page alone go create a “gallery” — and keep it current! (As for Cetus, you insisted in the obvious mistake I corrected — are you thinking this through?) -- Tuválkin 21:13, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, I can nom them for deletion, just don't want to waste a month of them. As for Pluto, they're in a child cat. No reason they can't be merged into a single cat. And I agree, it's ridiculous, but you insist on being ridiculous. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:18, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 • Guy, I’m going to let this slip because it seems you end up cleaning up the messes you made, and for me being right is more imporant than being polite. But you missed a good opportunity to be polite and collegial. Next time you do any thing like this, it’s straight to AN/U instead of engaging in you in talk pages — as you said yourself you dont want to discuss things with me. -- Tuválkin 11:13, 5 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say I don't want to discuss things with you, but you're not offering me a "good opportunity to be polite and collegial" when you are rude and unprofessional. Grow up, learn how to interact with other people in a polite and collegial fashion, rather than being insulting and throwing around false accusations, and you might discover that people are willing to be polite and collegiate in return. Map of homosexuality and military service[edit]

Hi, could you update the file File:Map of homosexuality and military service.svg to add Ecuador to the blue countries? According to this article from one of Ecuador's most prestigious universities, the ban on LGBT people to serve in the military was removed in 2009. Thanks! :D --Freddy eduardo (talk) 03:10, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Done. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:14, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, I noticed that you've made another malformed deletion request. When you want to delete a page by manually using the Delete template, please remember to follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:42, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I don't see the other deletion request, though. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:41, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Evidently, you edited the redirect at File:IxionLatinfixed.png badly in such a manner as to create a manual Delete template in this edit after moving that file to File:Ixion symbol2 (Latin).png a minute after you uploaded it. In doing so, you neglected to create the required DR subpage Commons:Deletion requests/File:IxionLatinfixed.png for the redirect. I converted your mess to a speedy deletion request and posted section #File:IxionLatinfixed.png above 15:36, 14 October 2021 (UTC). Yann then deleted the redirect 19:29, 14 October 2021(UTC). I know, most of the evidence was deleted, but Admins can see it. We are supposed to keep redirects for most files we move per COM:FR. Also, please ping me when replying to me outside my user talk page.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:08, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You also made this one. When will you stop?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:03, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: I have stopped. I made that a month ago. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:05, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for stopping, and I'm sorry for the delay in my patrolling. However, that attempted ping did not work. Per mw:Extension:Echo#Usage, you must link to another user's page and sign in the same edit in order to effectively mention, notify, or ping them, and even then only if they have "Notify me when someone links to my user page" set (which is the default here).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:23, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Rights are granted to undertake consensus not your preference[edit]

Hi. Please do not use the rights granted by the community to undertake changes that you simply think are better. Your rename is inappropriate, there was no request and no clear and valid reason for that to be undertaken. Please reread commons:Renaming files.

Please also read Commons:Overwriting existing files which explains when you can undertake that act, your recent action I do not believe was consistent with the policy aspects.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:05, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What are you objecting to, exactly?
Oh, I see. No worries. Could you move the file back where it was, then? Kwamikagami (talk) 18:47, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for the Edit ![edit]

Thank you for the edit . Really appreciate it . As of Afghanistan, there has been extrajudicial killings of LGBT people recently by the state authorities of the Taliban , but no known Executions have been imposed solely for engaging same sexual activity . Though in the Penal code it explicitly said that honor Killing for homosexuality is Legal . Maybe you should color it dark orange like Saudi Arabia , along with having striped dark red like Southern Somalia instead ? Bayu Fuller (talk) 12:53, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that might work. And we might need to discuss Lebanon, there were convictions just a few years ago, though the military said since there was no def of "unnatural", they couldn't prosecute for it. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:14, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yess , Lebanon might be the Yellow one though because a Lebanese Court in 2019 rules that homosexuality is not punishable by Law but the rule is still present to persecute Homosexuals just like in Singapore and Sri Lanka. https://www.smh.com.au/world/lebanese-court-rules-homosexuality-is-not-a-crime-but-persecution-continues-20170210-gu9src.html In Sri Lanka , there is a couple of arrests and anal exams in 2020 regarding to men convicted of homosexuality under the article 365A but they were not sentenced to prison due to the Law being ruled unenforcable by the Sri Lankan Court a few years ago. Lebanon is similar to what happened in Sri Lanka . In addition, sorry for messing up the edits on "LGBT rights in Asia ", made a New file at that time because the Files I upload couldn't appear as fast as I think it would . Will revert all the edits from other wiki and use the old file instead . Bayu Fuller (talk) 03:14, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yellow is really for no arrests the last 3 years. For that, Sri Lanka should be orange. But that definition's always been a bit arbitrary. We might want to change it to no convictions in the last decade, or change of enforcement in the last decade. But you've got places where large numbers of people are arrested and imprisoned without ever being formally charged, and yellow doesn't seem to be the right color for that. We had a striped orange/yellow, but dropped it. Do you think Sri Lanka and Lebanon should both be orange? If yellow, I think there are going to be other countries with chronic arrests of LGBT that will need to be yellow too. Kwamikagami (talk) 06:43, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Noo it's fine , yellow is for any country / territory whose rule were not applied / ruled unenforcable/unconstitutional by the supreme court or smth. Prosecutions like interogation for homosexuality could still occur but no charges filled. In Countries like Syria , there could be no prison charge for homosexuality if you are caught by the Government office of the Syrian Arab Republic , but under other rebel millitias and terrorist groups there could be prosecutions for homosexuality like conducting prison time , lashes or death . If this is the case , then it would be orange. Does Lebanon fits like this too , if it has specific millitias like the Hezbollah that can give jail time or death penalty towards Gays then it would be considered as orange (as in Iraq too) , but if it cannot have vigilante controls then it would be yellow like Singapore , Sri Lanka etc. Bayu Fuller (talk) 08:57, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, yellow doesn't mean there has been a court decision to not enforce, it means that the law has not been enforced even if allowed by the courts. There is a time limit for whether we count a country or not, which has varied over the years. As of last consensus, yellow was for any country where there had not been no prosecutions in the last 3 years. If you wish to change that consensus, we will need to re-evaluate all countries in the world where homosex is illegal.
If the govt does not enforce but militias do, then the country would be striped, as in Somalia. Kwamikagami (talk) 09:03, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please correct Map of Sodomy Laws for Indonesia 🙏[edit]

Hi , Kwamikagami. Can you please fix the map for Indonesia in the wikipidea page of Sodomy Laws. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Penalizaci%C3%B3n_de_la_homosexualidad_por_pa%C3%ADs.png#mw-jump-to-license ^^^ Map claims that in all of the Sumatran islands homosexuality is outlawed . Whereas in reality , only one territory / province namely Aceh criminalize homosexuality . Please , please edit and correct it . Make the red dot for the Aceh territory only , whilst make the rest of Sumatra Blue . Aceh is the only territory in Indonesia's Sumatra to have an autonomous status that means they can have Sharia , whereas the rest of Sumatran Provinces does not have autonomous status hence homosexuality is still legal. Please correct it 🙏 Bayu Fuller (talk) 10:28, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I know how to edit a svg File , but I'm not sure how to edit a Png One. Please please , help to correct the PNG file , make the red mark for the Aceh territory only. Bayu Fuller (talk) 10:33, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As for which program to use, really simple drawing/graphics programs are usually enough for PNGs. You use the eyedropper to copy a color, and the paint bucket to fill an area with it. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:08, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't know about the nominate tool. Thanks.
We really need a month-long discussion to delete a file I recently uploaded myself, and that no-one is using? You seem to be creating unnecessary work for people yourself!
It would help if the instructions were intelligible. I try following them, but it's hard to tell what the word "the" even refers to. And I've never seen the "click here" instructions. new transgender symbol[edit]

I was thinking, could you please fix width this symbol (it's also here)? it's ⚧︎ with a star/asterisk non-binary symbol instead of a male with stroke in it.--Tazuco (talk) 00:56, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm Hatto. I noticed that you updated File:Countries which have had female Heads of State and Government.svg. Women called en:Najla Bouden and en:Magdalena Andersson are currently en:Prime Minister of Tunisia and en:Prime Minister of Sweden. Therefore, do we need to update the above world map?--Hatto (talk) 16:05, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I haven't been keeping that up-to-date. But should we instead perhaps substitute with the maps used on en:List of elected and appointed female heads of state and government? Kwamikagami (talk) 17:48, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I had not seen this article until you mentioned en:List of elected and appointed female heads of state and government. I only noticed that the information in File:Countries which have had female Heads of State and Government.svg may not have been updated, so I'm not sure what is appropriate to do either. However, according to the List of elected and appointed female heads of state and government, Tunisia is classified as "female head of government" and Sweden as "female combined head of state/government, or with a female head of government and a monarchial head of state with no vice-regal representative", so Tunisia and Sweden in File:Countries which have female Heads of State and Government.svg should also be color-coded as such.--Hatto (talk) 01:18, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, as long as the map is used somewhere. (And it's used on several wikis.) But we might want to migrate all wikis over to the other maps, in which case there's no need to keep this one up to date. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:47, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gender-symbol images[edit]

There is no relevant "format" that my combined gender-symbol images were supposed to "match". Your uploads were in blatant violation of policy COM:OVERWRITE. Please do not do anything similar again. AnonMoos (talk) 22:53, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. I also reverted myself on File:HeteroSym-pinkblue2.svg. Kwamikagami (talk) 04:06, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. AnonMoos (talk) 06:45, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you now doing the same thing with respect to other images???[edit]

Resizing File:Female bisexuality symbol-colour.svg and File:Male bisexuality symbol-colour.svg to tiny little nearly-invisible 15 pixel by 19 pixel semi-nothing-images is again, almost certainly a violation of COM:OVERWRITE (though I won't be reverting these images). If you want to establish a set of harmonized symbols according to some personal idiosyncratic criterion of your own, then PLEASE UPLOAD NEW IMAGES (when they would be very different from existing images), instead of overwriting! You can basically do almost anything you want with new images (as long as necessary attributions are preserved), while while there are lots of rules and restrictions which govern overwriting an image originally created by someone else... AnonMoos (talk) 07:04, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with having different sizes and shapes of images that are used together (set in rectangles of different length ratios) is that the end user needs to repeatedly resize their output to get visual harmony. This can be a huge pain, and I got thoroughly sick of having to constantly adjust the sizes of images to get them to go together. If the images are uniformly sized to begin with, then that's not an issue.
In this case, the new and old versions are practically identical apart from size -- same colors, same shapes. The line weight is a bit different. There are thousands of cases of minor changes like this to files on COMMONS, many of which involve resizing, and AFAICT they've not been an OVERWRITE concern. They're also not "nearly invisible" -- X pixels is X pixels, and since they're SVG, it doesn't matter if the img is enlarged or shrunk to make it the desired size. (Enlargement would be a problem with PNG, which is why PNG is now dispreferred.) So if for example someone sets an image to 100 px, then my change makes essentially no difference to the display. What it does accomplish is that the user won't need to set one image to 85px or its companion to 120px -- both can be set to 100px. Even leaving out the size altogether as a default thumb results in the img being the size set by one's browser or user preferences -- in my case, it appears to default to about 120px. If they're set as text, then without choosing a size they'll default to 16px high, which is a common enough size for browser text. But that's almost never done -- editors normally either choose the size an image should display at (the editor's choice), or let the browser display it at the default thumbnail size (the user's choice), neither of which will be affected by the minor changes I made.
If you really think this is a big enough modification to warrant uploading them as additional imgs, I can do so; it just seems inefficient. Kwamikagami (talk) 08:13, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You're "Harmonizing" them for a purpose that they may have not been intended for, and which the original uploader may not approve. Also, you CHANGED THE SHAPE OF THE SYMBOLS (making them stubbier), as you also did with my images that you overwrote -- so it's not a matter of simple resizing. As I said, I'm not going to revert you on these images, but the cumulative changes point towards a COM:OVERWITE violation -- and I was distinctly less than impressed when I saw that you had learned nothing from the kerfuffle over the other images, and went on to commit basically the same problematic actions again. 16:59, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
Yes, they are a heavier line weight, as I noted. I've reverted, and will upload the modifications as 'bold'. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:15, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. AnonMoos (talk) 21:58, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Interlinked is not overlapped[edit]

I'm sure you have good intentions and are trying to do your best, but interlinked does not fall under overlapped, so that's something else which now needs to be cleaned up. AnonMoos (talk) 21:59, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It needed to be cleaned up anyway, because variants of the same symbol appeared in different categories rather than together. What you see is my attempt to clean that up. At least the symbols are now together in the same category. If I got the category wrong, my apologies. Not sure what the distinction is, since it's not explained, so it would probably be a good idea to add a descriptive header to the categories so that others don't have the same confusion.
BTW, if you explain the difference to me, I'll be happy to clean it up myself. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:09, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Guanajuato[edit]

Re: Same-sex marriage in Guanajuato state: Why have you colored the state in as if a law has been passed there codifying same-sex marriage into state law. I have seen no reports of it. I think you're referring to this: https://paginacentral.com.mx/decreta-gobernador-matrimonio-igualitario-en-guanajuato/ But that article only refers to the regulations, not to the Civil Code (law) itself, which still needs to be amended by the congress.

Robsalerno (talk) 07:05, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was what I was thinking of. I thought that took care of it, didn't realize that there were other discriminatory provisions in the civil code. If that's wrong, please rv my changes to the map. Kwamikagami (talk) 09:15, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gaza Strip - LGBT World map[edit]

In the LGBT World map. I believe the Gaza Strip should be counted as an extrajudicial killing. Which rules the normal orange stripe red color, as with Afghanistan and Al Shabaab territory in Somalia. Since in its official status in Wikipedia, the Gaza Strip are only de facto controlled by Hamas, its de jure claimed by the National Palestinian authority that controls the West Bank. The Gaza Strip do not have the death penalty in its official status for homosexuality legally, they follow the old British Penal code which criminalizes sodomy with 10 years in prison. I believe the Execution of Hamas Commander would have something to do with him being married and an official commander of hamas itself. It may not be the judicial law of the region but it could certainly be Hamas's policy itself for one of its commanders. Eustatius Strijder (talk) 13:20, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Strijder: I don't know how we'd do that for such a small area.
Have there been prison sentences in either Gaza or the West Bank? Kwamikagami (talk) 16:54, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you add Kosovo? It was removed recently. S.G ReDark (talk) 15:54, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tennessee[edit]

Do you think Tennessee should be turned black on the global abortion law map? The law does not provide an exception for life, but rather contains an affirmative defense, meaning that a person who performs an abortion - even to save a life - can still be charged with a class c felony, but if they are charged, they have an opportunity to prove that the procedure was necessary — either to prevent the patient from dying or to prevent serious risk of what the law calls “substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.” Do you think that this warrants changing the status of abortion in Tennessee on the global map to illegal with no exceptions, even in case of saving a life? President Loki (talk) 05:23, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Either black or orange, since health is a reason. As to which of those, I don't know. Normally US law is innocent until proven guilty, but this sounds like guilty until proven innocent. But then, that's how the law works in many other countries around the world, so TN may be like some of the orange elsewhere. Kwamikagami (talk) 05:34, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adoptions map[edit]

Hi kwami. I appreciate your work on gay articles a lot. I realised the adoptions map is basically maintained by you so I was wondering if there are sources about adoptions or recognitions of adoptions by same-sex couples in places like the British Indian Ocean territory. I don't think anyone can even adopt in that territory (even though it is shown on your map). That is one example. I am trying to find sources for these very small places and struggling, and idk if the map should indicate that the situation is ambiguious or something like that. Thanks Heikocvijic (talk) 02:30, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the dot on the BIOT should probably be removed, just as I didn't add dots for the UK military bases in Cyprus or for South Georgia. Technically, SSM is the law and includes adoption, so you can legally adopt in BIOT, but as you say there's the practical issue of how that would ever happen. The same's true with the UK base in Antarctica -- there's been at least one marriage there, but IMO we shouldn't color Antarctica for SSM because of it. I don't know if I'll bother editing the adoption map for what is essentially trivia, but perhaps you could leave a request on the talk page, and it could be included with the next update, for whenever a real country changes their laws. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:52, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if the Chagossian expats in Mauritius or Madagascar could SS-adopt under BIOT law? Probably not. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:53, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
lol. Anyway, yeah I am not sure what to do. I am trying to get accurate information because of a project I am working on and surprisingly not everyone is interested about adoptions in the Chagos Islands lol. I will post on the discussion page of ssa, and if you had links about ssm and adoptions that would be lovely because the ssa article is lacking. 'for whenever a real country changes their laws.' that gave me a chuckle lol Heikocvijic (talk) 02:28, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't have any insights. I keep an eye on Equality on Trail, and every once in a while do a search of the spanish-language news, but other than that I'm pretty clueless. I suspect some of the Mexican states are wrong -- it doesn't even match our Mexican state map. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:34, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have not even started on the Mexican ones and I bet it will be a hell of a thing. I have done edits for ssm in Mexico and their journalists are not doing a good job tbh. Now when it comes to ssa, I can only expect it will be worse. Also, what's Equality on Trail? Is that your own project? I cannot find it Heikocvijic (talk) 02:53, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's a legal blog for SSM and other LGBT-related issues. People find the darnest things, though sometimes just tweets by MP's and so not good refs for WP, but sometimes publications of legal decisions. Though I can't figure out how to browse their archives. You should check it out. It's at equalityontrial.com. You might also want to check out wockner2.blogspot.com, though there are only a couple posts a year. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:58, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you move this file? It doesn't seem to comply with any of our file renaming criterias. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 03:50, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nearly all files have now lower-case suffixes. There are just a few remnants like this that are still all caps. Consistency makes them easier to link to. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:52, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Should also add Burma, Sri Lanka, & Netherlands to the Malay Sphere file[edit]

Hello. I recommend adding the mentioned countries as Malay is a minority language there. Sri lanka with Sri lankan malay, Burma where Kedah Malay is spoken, and Indonesian in the Netherlands. Thank you. 202.160.36.153 03:43, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is it officially recognized in any of those countries? That's what the map is showing. Kwamikagami (talk) 04:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A question[edit]

Hello. Thank you for your work on many great maps uploaded to Commons. Could you please change colours on this file? Correct me if I'm wrong, but we usually use colour grey for countries without available data. I would kindly suggest to paint all the countries which are against the independent status red and to present countries which have later withdrawn their recognition orange. An alternative could be blue and red for pro independent Kosovo* or against. This would give us a clearer picture on the issue. Thanks. — Sadko (words are wind) 14:54, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do we even have a full list of countries that are against independence? Without that, I think it would be misleading to recolor. There are also countries which haven't taken a position either way, which would need to be a fourth color. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:01, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Swedish and Malay[edit]

1. Please don't start a discussion with aggressive accusations "User:Taylor 49 is edit-warring over the name of this file".
2. Your recent rename was a blunder because you did not fix the most obvious fault: "spåkets" (see discussion).
Taylor 49 (talk) 23:59, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't want people to object to your edit-warring, I suggest you stop edit-warring!
You could always fix the typo yourself. Really, I don't understand your complaints. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:10, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed: I'll edit-war all I like -- this is not WP with its 3RR.. Taylor 49 (talk) 00:44, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you try to delete "Distribution-sv.png" ?[edit]

[5] Taylor 49 (talk) 00:44, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't tried to delete it. But I have replaced it with the much smaller equivalent: 50 instead of 500 kB. There's no reason to spend half a megabyte on such a simple map, and in many parts of the world large files like that will make browsing WP slower and more expensive. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:46, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The file "Svenska språkets utbredning.png" contained the template { {superseded} }. You reversed the supersede direction from preferring high resolution to preferring low resolution. Such edits are not useful. Yeah ... manually brewed SVG would be best. Taylor 49 (talk) 01:01, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need for such high resolution. It's a simple map. 400x600 px is plenty. Kwamikagami (talk) 01:03, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I reduced the bloat a bit. Taylor 49 (talk) 01:10, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That helps. It's still 8x the size of the other. Though the other one doesn't have borders, which is annoying. Kwamikagami (talk) 01:18, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

African homesexuality laws map[edit]

A few days ago, the UN Human Rights Committee (https://www.ungeneva.org/en/news-media/meeting-summary/2022/10/dialogue-ethiopia-experts-human-rights-committee-commend-efforts) wrote, concerning Ethiopia: "The Committee had received disturbing reports of at least nine criminal convictions of adults who had had sexual relations with persons of the same sex." Would this make switch the country's colour from yellow to orange on the African homosexuality laws map? 178.197.201.154 15:09, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It would seem to. It doesn't actually say that they were convicted for being gay, only that some gays had been convicted, convicted for being gay being implied. I'll change the map, but if anyone thinks it's SYNTH to draw that conclusion, please rv me or comment there. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:13, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative Symbols[edit]

Hello, I really appreciate your work on the symbols of astronomical objects, but I noticed that there was another possible symbol for the asteroid 407 Arachne, it's two concentric circles with 8 radii (or 4 diameters), to represent a spider's web. I found it on Martha Lang Westcott's website with some other symbols.I see that you sometimes use those imagined by MysticaLink, which are very present on the internet, but which can sometimes be obscure, because they have no explanations. What I find quite unfortunate... it was just a remark that I wanted to make, otherwise I have great pleasure in discovering mythology and history through asteroids! I hope I wasn't rude or against Wikimedia rules. Cordially. 2001:861:39C0:F10:8599:CEA0:A24:D05 22:59, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "Really, intimidation and harassment? For an edit summary on my own talk page? I neither harassed them nor intimidated them. Rather, they came here to threaten me over a good-faith edit, which is intimidating, and for the trivial reason that I hadn't filled out a template properly when trying to clean up Commons a little bit. I was uncivil in my response to that threat, but that's not what I was blocked for.
Even if you don't get to this until the block has expired, I'd appreciate a comment in my block log noting that the charge of "intimidation/harassment" is false. I shouldn't need to explain, but just in case, intimidation is the act of "deterring by threats"; I issued no threats. Harassment is the act of "annoying someone frequently or systematically", which I also obviously did not do, since I only made one comment to them.
"
Decline reason: "No reason given"
Administrators: This template should be removed when the block has expired.

Kwamikagami (talk) 18:04, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

|2=Writing someone's talk page and calling them asshole, and continuing in administrators' noticeboard is blatant harassment. Jeff G. provided lots of links, continuing harassing may intimidate him. Your request is declined. Kadı Message 06:27, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kadı: "No reason"? The reason is that you blocked me for spurious reasons.
Did you not follow those "lots of links"? They are old deletion requests I made, with no mention of Jeff. There was nothing even remotely inappropriate about my behaviour in them; I merely didn't fill out the template properly. You can't possibly construe this or the "lots of" similar edits as intimidation or harassment.
Yes, I was uncivil on his talk page. But that's not the reason you gave for the block. On the admin page, I explained (to others) why I responded as I did, and apologized to him for over-reacting. I didn't "harass" him. If you'd blocked me for being uncivil, that would be fine, but blocking someone with false claims is at best negligent. Kwamikagami (talk) 06:54, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In the unblocking template, a technical error occurred. Please ignore "No reason given.". You behave uncivil to @Jeff G. in edit summaries firstly, then you continued in admin's noticeboard. This is harassment. Your block is expired. Please do not behave like that again. Best, Kadı Message 07:35, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kadı: Excuse me? What on earth are you talking about continued incivility in AN? Please take a look again because there is no such thing. On AN, Kwami explained what they did and engaged with the complaining editor on what their actions had been, and asked to not be threatened by them. I don't know what you think harassment is, but if you think that Kwami's actions in AN come anywhere near it, your judgment is seriously questionable. VanIsaac (en.wiki) 07:55, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Vanisaac, Kwamikagami said in AN: "... indeed being an asshole." @Jeff G. felt uncomfortable, then reported. Continuing this kind of behavior is inappropriate and can be perceived as harassment. This is my last answer about this incident, Kwamikagami is a valuable contributor and I hope he/she will not continue to behave like that. I am not happy for blocking him/her. Kadı Message 08:18, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kadı: Except I didn't continue it, and you got your timing backwards. I said on AN that I thought threatening someone for making a technical error in a good-faith edit was being an asshole. That's not harassment, and that's not what Jeff reported me for! The fact you can't tell the difference, that you mix up cause and effect, and that you don't even bother to read the links that you claim are evidence for your decision, suggests that you aren't competent to be an admin. If you didn't review the links because you didn't have time, you should at least have the decency to apologize for it. It's getting quite late; I'll have to see in the morning if I still feel this is worth following up at AN, so in the future people don't look at my block log and think that I did the things you accused me of. Kwamikagami (talk) 09:24, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kwamikagami, You have good intentions, I know. I said in my previous message: I am not happy. If you agree, I will change the visibility of the log, and add uncivility instead of harassment. Because of continuing, I wrote that reason, this is your first block, if you agree I can change it. Do you agree? Kadı Message 09:29, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also: I may have considered what you said to be harsh by the reason of my culture. Turkish and English are different about bad words. Kadı Message 09:31, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kadı: Yes, thank you. That is all I'm asking. I don't mind having a record of "incivility" in my block log, because I was indeed uncivil. (And it was rather harsh, if perhaps not as harsh as it would be in Turkish -- I couldn't judge that, though I do remember people being quite respectful in Turkey.) I object to a record of "intimidation/harassment", because I did neither of those things and don't want people to think I did. Kwamikagami (talk) 09:50, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kwamikagami, I asked to some native English speaker users. I changed the block rationale, I can not add uncivility because if I do it, I need you to block you again, this would not be appropriate. So, I deleted the edit summary and added a note, you can see it here. Kadı Message 09:56, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kadı: Thanks! Yes, that works for me. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:55, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Category:514107 Kaʻepaokaʻawela[edit]

I'm trying to understand why you these edits to Category:514107 Kaʻepaokaʻawela. By definition a trojan of any parent body occupies either the L4 or L5 point of the parent's orbit, and Kaʻepaokaʻawela obviously doesn't. It's co-orbital, sure, but not a trojan. Huntster (t @ c) 04:07, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Huntster: Perhaps it should be in both?
I don't believe trojans are restricted to L4 or L5. AFAICT, objects with horseshoe orbits are considered trojans (saw one characterization of such a body as an L3 trojan). Also, someone looking for something in a 1:1 resonance may look under 'trojan', so it would be good to list it there even if it's not technically one. Kwamikagami (talk) 04:12, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Britannica, Merriam-Webster, Collins all use the L4-L5 definition (either generally or wrt Jupiter), as do articles at Nature, The Planets, etc. For that matter the MPC seems to classify Kaʻepaokaʻawela as a Main Belt asteroid. NASA's Small Body Database simply calls it an asteroid, as opposed to any other Trojan which is specifically called as such. It would be hard to justify categorising it as both a trojan and an MBA. Huntster (t @ c) 04:31, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Huntster: We didn't classify it as a MBA, only as an 'asteroid'. Perhaps that's enough. I wouldn't look for it under 'main belt asteroids' myself, since it's not in the main belt. But if you want to remove the trojan cat, I won't object. Kwamikagami (talk) 04:33, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(For me, the question was not whether it's actually a trojan, but whether someone trying to locate it might look the under trojan category.) Kwamikagami (talk) 19:20, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

overlapped vs. interlinked[edit]

Overlapped means that one is loosely on top of the other, but they're not linked, and you could easily slide them apart. Interlinked means that there's over-under interlacing, so that neither is on top or beneath the other, and if they were real physical rings, you couldn't pull them apart (see en:Hopf link). The person who created some of these categories was unfortunately unclear on some of the concepts, but I tried to clean it up the best I could... AnonMoos (talk) 00:22, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If there's no evidence of under-over interlacing, then it should be overlapped by default. I have limited high-bandwidth editing time, but I'[ll try to take a look at it... AnonMoos (talk) 18:14, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can do that. Just wasn't sure which direction to go. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:47, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Obsoleted by SVG replacement[edit]

Hi, Kwamikagami! I've noticed some image replacements in ca.source (e.g.), some of which I'm considering to undo: a yellow smiling smiley (🌝) instead of a black and white non-smiling moon (), in a 1847 b&w book, make it a very rare (but cool) transcription (in Wikisource the copy should be as verbatim as possible). I'm aware of your hard work and good faith, so now I'm confused, and the template in that file pointing to another file as prefered (one eyebrowed moon: ) adds more confusion to me. So, a more wide question would be: the images in Category:Moon symbols obsoleted by SVG replacement can be used, or cannot be used? If not, then the SVG new file should show the same image, not a different one. A similar old unanswered question remains in Category talk:Obsolescences by SVG replacement. So I would appreciate some help for understanding this replacements in a better way. Thanks! -Aleator (talk) 17:00, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Aleator: .
There are a couple issues here. First, Wikisource should be verbatim yes, but it does not need to look like the original. It can't, not unless we freeze the characters in a PDF. On German WS, for example, they don't use Fraktur characters for Fraktur pubs, they leave that up to the reader's choice of font. By that criterion, we should simply transcribe this Catalan doc with the appropriate Unicode characters and leave it up to the reader to decide which typeface to use.
Now your example is an annoying case, because a lot of readers will see them as emoji. The Unicode character is the correct one: U+1F31D FULL MOON WITH FACE. It may display as yellow pock-marked smiley emoji with your default fonts, but it will look like something else to other people. There are a couple things we could do to correct this:
 • We could append the variant selector ︎ after the character to force it to display as text. That would change 🌝️ to 🌝︎.
One complication here is that, on my system, the new-moon character 🌚 would change from black to white; the only difference between new and full moon would be which direction they're looking! Now, we could leave the new moon as an emoji so it stays black, and only force the full and quarter moons to display as text, but that's a solution for my system. For quarter moons, some fonts have a black last-quarter moon, like the Catalan source does, but in others both quater moons are white. You can see how customizing a document so that it looks correct on one person's system might make it worse on someone else's. If you try reading WS on a Samsung phone, you'll find a lot more characters display as emoji, even ones that aren't supposed to be emoji. It becomes a mess. But that's just the cost of using Samsung; there are limits to how much we can customize our articles so that they display similarly to everyone.
 • We could use images and insert the corresponding Unicode character as the alt text. For your example, we could use , which would display as 🌝 but still allow the reader to copy and paste the Unicode character. For example, if I highlight our example (the one just here in brackets) and paste it into the search window at Wiktionary, I get "⟨🌝⟩", which will allow me to look up that character.
The problem is that readers now can't search for other instances of that character on WSource, because characters embedded in images are not searchable. (This isn't a Wikimedia thing -- I asked -- but apparently universal to all browsers.) Also, we now have to define the size of the image. Say we choose 20px. If someone is visually impaired and has selected Wikisource to display at an exceptionally large font size, this character will still be at 20px and so may be too small for them to read. That is, using bare Unicode means that we're accessible to the visually impaired, using images means we may not be. Now, there are so many images on Wikimedia that that may be a lost cause, but I think in Wikisource at least, as much as possible readers should be able to read the documents.
I got into this debate on German WS, where an editor wanted to use lots of images so that the article would look good on his Samsung phone, but at the cost of being potentially illegible to others.
The purpose of WS, if I understand correctly, is to provide readers with digitized versions of the source material, so that they can use that material in their research or for creating WP articles. It should be as accurate as possible. It doesn't need to look pretty.
Your other point, "the new SVG file should show the same image, not a different one" as the one it replaced: Not necessarily. In this case, the old images are extremely poor resolution, so we'd be guessing if we tried duplicating them as SVG. They're obviously just whatever type the publishers had at their disposal. We can replace it with the same character -- it's the symbol that's needed, not the typeface. Similarly, if the book was published in one typeface, and we wished to republish it -- say by converting the WS article to a PDF -- we wouldn't need to use the original publisher's typeface. Any Roman typeface would do, assuming it included all the necessary characters. If we wanted a facsimile reproduction, we wouldn't digitize it in the first place. I forced them to display as text. I'm not sure that's an improvement, though. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:46, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kwamikagami: Hi! I'm fascinated by the explanation (and the issue itself)! I couldn't see the Unicode issues for the Unicode yellow disturbing emojis. Well, in fact, I didn't know of their existence. So, I appreciate a lot the whole explanation. Now I see the transcription more "accurate?", but, as you say, it will depend on the reader, the user preferences and others (e.g., each PDF creation tool -WSExport, Special:DownloadAsPdf, PDF from printable- creates different images -using the same PDF reader-). So, it's OK for me. Thanks again! -Aleator (talk) 16:51, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New PRRI survey for same-sex marriage[edit]

The 2022 American Values Atlas by PRRI has come out.

Apologies for asking you to do it. But I saw that you're the last person to update the graphic and I'm still learning how Wikipedia's image upload works.

Thanks. KlayCax (talk) 19:43, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Legalisation on Cook Islands[edit]

Please update File:World laws pertaining to homosexual relationships and expression.svg --92.76.109.82 16:10, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. That change was reverted because the law won't come into effect until June 1. Kwamikagami (talk) 19:57, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Hello. Can you please add color on this map to Armenia, the Russian language is very common in the country, from educational institutions to pharmacies. In all cities and large settlements they speak Russian fluently Well-read MountainMan (talk) 20:08, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it seems to pass 30% per current Ethnologue. Previous source had a much lower fraction. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:00, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Aosta Valley in Francophonie map[edit]

Hello! Following the change you made on February 2022 (probably this one), in which you added the Aosta Valley to the map of the francophone world, I would kindly ask you to please do the same on this map, since the Aosta Valley has a 40-49% French-speaking population. Please do not hesitate to reply to me here for further details, if needed. Thank you :) Tenam (talk) 16:46, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tenam. That map is by country, and the Aosta is not a country. Its number counts toward the total in Italy. Kwamikagami (talk) 18:36, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Kwamikagami :) Concerning this map and this map, the Aosta Valley should be added and put in dark blue, following this edit. Thank you in advance for your reply. Tenam (talk) 10:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
French is L1 of only 1% of the population, and even Arpitan by only 18%, according to our source for the Aosta. Kwamikagami (talk) 17:24, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
The Aosta Valley should though still appear in light blue on this map.
As regards this map, you are probably quoting "Fiorenzo Toso, Le minoranze linguistiche in Italia, Il Mulino, 2008", though a more recent study "Assessorat de l'éducation et la culture - Département de la surintendance des écoles, Profil de la politique linguistique éducative, Le Château éd., 2009, p. 20" indicates that 75.41% of the Aosta Valley population speak fluent French, and 50.53% both French, Arpitan and Italian. How should we treat this statistics? --Guprilen (talk) 11:51, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"Speak" doesn't mean native speaker, which is what the dark color is for.
Why light blue? Isn't French official? Kwamikagami (talk) 20:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see.
As regards this map, I was probably watching an old version in which the AV did not show. Thanks for your time. Tenam (talk) 07:47, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Abortion map (Mexico)[edit]

Aguascalientes, 2023

Hi! The map needs to be updated. The Supreme Court decriminalised abortion there two days ago. Unclear gestation limit (like in Coahuila), so it can be performed at any stage of the pregnancy (like in Coahuila). https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/mexicos-aguascalientes-becomes-12th-state-decriminalize-abortion-2023-08-30/ Aleqc (talk) 14:58, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File:Arabic speaking world.svg[edit]

Dear Kwamikagami, Since July 2023, French is no longer an official language of Mali. The 13 national languages, namely Bambara, Bobo, Bozo, Dogon, Fula, Arabic, Kassonke, Maninke, Minyanka, Senufo, the Songhay languages, Soninke and Tamasheq, became official languages. This means that Arabic has been an official language of Mali since July 2023. Please could you add Mali to the file "Arabic speaking world.svg". Now, Arabic is a "co-official as minority language" in Mali. This file is shown at the article "List of countries and territories where Arabic is an official language". Thank you in advance. Kind regards, Michael 2A00:6020:B03D:8800:3CCF:C118:7E47:8CBF 19:13, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Kwamikagami (talk) 03:44, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. The map is now up to date again.
Kind regards,
Michael

File:Oxygen symbol (Lavoisier).svg[edit]

Hi, Kwamikagami! Can you give more information about your source for this? Which Lavoisier work does it come from? Cjvannette (talk) 22:39, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. From 1782, cited in the 1911 EB.[6] Kwamikagami (talk) 02:35, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that will help me narrow it down! Cjvannette (talk) 02:37, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If that's inaccurate, please let me know. I created the symbol for the EB article on Wikisource, but wouldn't want to repeat it on WP if the EB is wrong. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:42, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
