Thx[edit]

Thanks for help with the PAS load and finessing the "Hoards" category. I think these pictures will be the basis (or making) of a number of articles. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 09:58, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading them. I am sure they will be very useful, and I have already started to use some of them in hoard-related articles. BabelStone (talk) 22:54, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for uploading free images. Please try to upload the highest possible resolution. — Tanvir 16:30, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need opinions for British Museum object captions[edit]

Hello Babelstone,

As you may have noticed, I have changed the information in some of the files you have uploaded, using a {{Artwork}} rather than {{British-Museum-object}} (see File:British Museum Hoxne Hoard Tigress.jpg for example). I did not really think that such changes would be controversial, but apparently it is. So your thoughts would be appreciated at Template talk:British-Museum-object.--Zolo (talk) 21:15, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BabelStone, if you are interested in commenting, please note the background discussion at User_talk:Zolo#Blanking_of_information. Thanks -- (talk) 22:59, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I used your marine chronometer photo in http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonnetmaker/6329503177/ The photo is quite interesting to me. --DL5MDA (talk) 22:27, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know; it is always nice to hear from people who use my pictures. It is a fine chronometer, and historically interesting as one of only two surviving examples of the twenty-two chronometers used on the HMS Beagle during Darwin's voyage. BabelStone (talk) 10:07, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stein[edit]

Thanks for spotting this - I'm a little irritated it slipped by me! I will make some enquiries before listing for deletion, as it's possible we may be the residual rightsholder in any case. Andrew Gray (talk) 16:48, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If we do have to delete them it's not a big problem as in less than 14 months time they'll be out of copyright and we'll be able to upload all of Stein's photos, which is something I was planning on anyway. BabelStone (talk) 00:48, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reminder. I've been away from the BL much of the last few weeks so haven't had much of a chance to talk to people about this; I'll make sure to email Vic tomorrow. I think you're right that we will need to delete for a year and a half, but I'll try and make sure they don't know something I don't. It's a little galling given they're definitely PD-US, but I guess this is the price we pay for having a rational system ;-) Andrew Gray (talk) 23:54, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an original uploader of this file, I've corrected colors only. So your deletion request is missing the person interested in this file presence. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 19:07, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

file removed[edit]

Dear BabelStone, I am relatively new to Wikimedia Commons. Robert Kelly (artist) provided me with an image of himself in his studio, which I uploaded and posted into his Wikipedia entry. The photograph was taken by his long time life partner but since I don't have her last name I didn't credit her for taking this picture. As the image is Robert Kelly's personal property I didn't realize that this would be a problem. Can you undo the delete and put this image back into his Wikipedia entry? Or, if not, how can I see that it is replaced? What steps do I take? There is no question that it is used with full permission....Thank you so much! User:Artandimage

It is not sufficient that the subject of the image gives permission for it to be used on Wikimedia Commons, as the subject is not usually the copyright holder, even if he owns the physical photograph. You need the photographer (who is normally the copyright holder) to give explicit permission to Wikimedia (not just to you) in order for the image to be used on Wikimedia Commons. In order to get the image undeleted you will need to get the person who took the photograph to email a license permission to Wikimedia according to the instructions given at OTRS. BabelStone (talk) 13:07, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the guidance and help. I forwarded the photographers explicit permission for free license use to the email address in OTRS. I hope that resolves it! Artandimage (talk) 01:40, 2 April 2013 (UTC)ArtandimageArtandimage (talk) 01:40, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading your pictures of St Laurence's church during Wiki Loves Monuments, the detail on the 12th-century south doorway is remarkable. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 09:37, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for putting it on the WMUK main page! Great weather for taking pics over the last couple of days, but just a shame about the sunlight in the bottom left corner of the doorway -- I may try again another day. BabelStone (talk) 16:32, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully the sun will return soon. I was going to take a couple of pictures myself on Sunday but the clouds closed in. I got soaked to the skin anyway, so I might as well have taken a camera along. Have you considered nominating some of your pictures at COM:QI? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 15:21, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The weekend was disappointing indeed! The sun briefly came out on Sunday afternoon, and I ran for the car and managed to grab pictures of three nearby Grade I bridges. I also went back to St Laurence's church today and snapped a pile more photos of the interior which I will upload later. Nice of you to suggest I nominate some of my pictures for QI, but I'm afraid that neither my camera nor my photography skills are quite good enough. Bosworth Boar[edit]

Hello BabelStone,

You may be aware a documentary on the finding of the bones of King Richard III earlier this year. We are making another documentary for C4 about Richard III following on from our success with King in the Carpark. Our aim is to recreate the very end of Richard’s life on the battlefield to discover what kind of a warrior he really was and to attempt to debunk the myths about him. We’re shedding new light on his ability to fight through scientific insight coupled with real life recreation

We would like to use this image. Can you confirm this image was taken by you, or you know its original author (photographer) or that you know that it can be used in TV documentary that requires it to cleared for World, All Media, 10 yrs.

Boar Badge of Richard III from Bosworth Field

I look forward to your reply.

Hi, thank you for your query. However, the photograph of the Bosworth Boar was not taken by me, but comes from the Portable Antiquities Scheme flickr photostream. You should contact Daniel Pett of the Portable Antiquities Scheme if you need explicit permission to use the image. BabelStone (talk) 13:05, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! BabelStone (talk) 13:06, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I made a few edits based on comments at QIC. Additionally, have you thought of putting it on the Wikipedia article? It's higher quality than the one currently there. Lewis Hulbert (talk) 22:54, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again for helping improve my pictures. I must admit I did consider putting it in the Wilder's Folly article, but although it is much higher resolution than the existing photo I rather like the framing of the tower on the green hill in the current picture, and the article is too short add another picture, so I think it best to leave it as is (there is of course a link to Commons if anyone wants to find additional pictures). BabelStone (talk) 13:10, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point I didn't think about, I agree that an infobox image should show the building's surroundings too. It's a shame there's not an image of the same angle at a much higher resolution. Maybe I'll end up visiting myself, it's less than an hour drive from me. Lewis Hulbert (talk) 22:14, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Nanyue categories[edit]

Would you be interested in saying something at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Category POV-pushing? That user's edits are on a much larger scale, they've completely moved the category outright. --benlisquareTalkContribs 16:25, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Note, that gallery rename was not so controversial as category rename as gallery names are not required to be in English. Vietnamese name is OK in this case. Ankry (talk) 21:42, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. In this case, the gallery was originally titled "Nanyue", and it was redirected to a new "Nam Việt" page with exactly the same content. As there is no reason to move the gallery from its common name to the Vietnamese name I reverted to the original state of affairs. BabelStone (talk) 21:46, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:Chrysographic Tangut Golden Light Sutra.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Portable Antiquities Scheme[edit]

Gold Corieltauvi stater, found in North Lincolnshire.
Hi, I can see you've used or uploaded some of these photographs in the past, so you may be interested in an early heads-up that I have started uploading all photographs from the Portable Antiquities Scheme, which should be around 400,000 photographs of archaeologically interesting artefacts, found by the public in England and Wales. It will take a few weeks to finish, I expect. I tweeted about it yesterday here and you can find the project page along with GLAM reports and other links like useful searches of the collection here. Category discussion warning

Taito has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Can you check this image?[edit]

Hello 👋🏻 Andrew,

I found this image on the internet on a website that claims that this document is from the Tang Dynasty, my knowledge of pre-Yuan Dynasty paper money 💴 is quite rudimentary and I would like to confirm with you if the claim that this is an authentic Tang Dynasty banknote (or a well-made replica) is accurate? From what I can read it speaks of “the Great Tang” but I'm not familiar enough with pre-Mongol banknotes to tell if it's genuine. Since Liao, Western Xia, Jurchen-Jin, and Song Dynasty topics are your area of expertise I thought 💭 that you would maybe know of Tang Dynasty-related topics as well. Thank you for your time, and a happy new year.

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again![edit]

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:34, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019![edit]

Hi

Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.

Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).

We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.

The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.

Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.

Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Chairman Mao plastic plaque.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

The old DoCoMo emoji designs have been on Commons since 2007?[edit]

I'm bringing this up here, since I am not entirely sure how to proceed, since the user responsible (User:٢١٩.١٧٤.١٥٨.٢٢٥~commonswiki a.k.a. ja:User:٢١٩.١٧٤.١٥٨.٢٢٥) was last seen on any Wikimedia project about a decade ago, and since I am hoping you can share more experience on this front…

The existence of Category:i-mode characters has come to my attention. If the filenames are anything to go by, these appear to be glyphs for characters from the TRON character set, similarly to how Category:Juki-Gana contains glyphs for TRON-encoded hentaigana (containing only 16×16px bitmap images until relatively recently). In this case, they appear to be 16×16px emoji bitmaps, following the pre-2013 DoCoMo emoji designs in black and transparent. They appear to have been on Commons for about thirteen years, since early 2007, and so for the majority of Wikimedia Commons' existence.

Although the images are used on the Japanese Wikipedia page for the DoCoMo i-mode emoji set, the category seems to have otherwise gone largely unnoticed, possibly because it was a subcategory of Category:Pictograms and not Category:Emoji, since it was created (as a category) several years before Category:Emoji was created. I will probably move it to Category:Emoji or a subcategory after I post this.

However, the uploader labelled them as own work under the GFDL (with BY-SA having been added during the licence update). Since they match the DoCoMo designs, any claim to authorship by the uploader seems, to put it delicately, rather questionable. However, they are simple single-colour 1bpp 16×16px raster images of coded characters, so it could be argued that they fall in the public domain... indeed, they do so rather more plausibly than the high resolution rasterisations of the entirety of Webdings which have been on Commons since early 2018 marked with {{PD-font}}.

Thoughts on how to proceed? -- HarJIT (talk) 22:10, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Even though they are only 16 x 16 b/w images, some of the designs are quite complex and distinctive, and I personally feel that they should be eligible for copyright protection. I very much disapprove of the abuse of {{PD-font}} to claim PD for anything that appears in a font, especially graphic symbols, so I would not support applying {{PD-font}} to the 16x16 images. My suggestion would be to nominate them all for deletion as the "own work" license is obviously spurious, and see what the consensus is. BabelStone (talk) 10:18, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
File:Mao Badge 11 Back.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Seals of the Manchu Qing Dynasty[edit]

I think that maybe you didn't realise it, but a lot of the files from this page are eligible to be imported to Wikimedia Commons, regarding the texts of the post cards, I think that you can simply crop the seals out (depending on the TOO of the PRC, of course) and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:49, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to upload them if you wish (I will no longer upload any 20th century PD works because of the high risk that they will be nominated for deletion). I see no reason to crop out any part of postcard as I believe they are now PD. BabelStone (talk) 19:19, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's a shame that you choose not to upload 20th (twentieth) century works anymore, I greatly appreciate your works and often come across some while reading Wikipedia. I also believe that the postcards are in the public domain but I know that the People's Republic of China has a rather low threshold of originality for copyrights so I couldn't say it with certainty.
Anyhow, my WikiWorkload is already extremely big and I decided that while I do want to import more traditional Oriental seals to Wikimedia Commons that I probably would be wiser to not do it because I still have (well, want) to write about the entire monetary and fiscal histories of the Qing Dynasty dynasty, list as much Chinese amulets, charms, and talismans (talismen?), and import entire collections of African and Asian coins, bamboo money, well, the list goes on and I haven't been making much progress due to a lot of personal issues in real life I really wish that I had infinite team or "copy myself" to do more work, it's a feeling I am sure you understand.
Even if works get deleted, they may be later restored when their copyright © expires, we even have pages like "Category:Undelete in 2080". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:31, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Unicode characters[edit]

Hi BabelStone, as a Unicode and rare CJK characters expert you might want to join the discussion(s) at Commons talk:User scripts/Invisible charaters#Categorising CJK Unified Ideographs and Commons:Village pump/Technical#Categorising CJK Unified Ideographs. Note that this is not a matter of Unicode planes, Extensione B to D characters don't seem to pose problems. Love —LiliCharlie (talk) 14:59, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
