Need opinions for British Museum object captions[edit]

Hello Babelstone,

As you may have noticed, I have changed the information in some of the files you have uploaded, using a {{Artwork}} rather than {{British-Museum-object}} (see File:British Museum Hoxne Hoard Tigress.jpg for example). I did not really think that such changes would be controversial, but apparently it is. Thanks for letting me know; it is always nice to hear from people who use my pictures. It is a fine chronometer, and historically interesting as one of only two surviving examples of the twenty-two chronometers used on the HMS Beagle during Darwin's voyage. Dear BabelStone, I am relatively new to Wikimedia Commons. Robert Kelly (artist) provided me with an image of himself in his studio, which I uploaded and posted into his Wikipedia entry. The photograph was taken by his long time life partner but since I don't have her last name I didn't credit her for taking this picture. As the image is Robert Kelly's personal property I didn't realize that this would be a problem. Can you undo the delete and put this image back into his Wikipedia entry? Or, if not, how can I see that it is replaced? What steps do I take? There is no question that it is used with full permission....Thank you so much! User:Artandimage

It is not sufficient that the subject of the image gives permission for it to be used on Wikimedia Commons, as the subject is not usually the copyright holder, even if he owns the physical photograph. You need the photographer (who is normally the copyright holder) to give explicit permission to Wikimedia (not just to you) in order for the image to be used on Wikimedia Commons. In order to get the image undeleted you will need to get the person who took the photograph to email a license permission to Wikimedia according to the instructions given at OTRS. Thanks again for helping improve my pictures. I must admit I did consider putting it in the Wilder's Folly article, but although it is much higher resolution than the existing photo I rather like the framing of the tower on the green hill in the current picture, and the article is too short add another picture, so I think it best to leave it as is (there is of course a link to Commons if anyone wants to find additional pictures). That's a good point I didn't think about, I agree that an infobox image should show the building's surroundings too. It's a shame there's not an image of the same angle at a much higher resolution. Thanks for the clarification. In this case, the gallery was originally titled "Nanyue", and it was redirected to a new "Nam Việt" page with exactly the same content. Portable Antiquities Scheme[edit]

Hi, I can see you've used or uploaded some of these photographs in the past, so you may be interested in an early heads-up that I have started uploading all photographs from the Portable Antiquities Scheme, which should be around 400,000 photographs of archaeologically interesting artefacts, found by the public in England and Wales. Hello, I saw that on your website you used an image of a Tangut coin with Tangut inscriptions, do you actually own a coin like that? I do own one Tangut coin, but I'm afraid it is probably a modern fake, although it is a very good fake and would probably do as an illustration of a Tangut coin. I found this image on the internet on a website that claims that this document is from the Tang Dynasty, my knowledge of pre-Yuan Dynasty paper money 💴 is quite rudimentary and I would like to confirm with you if the claim that this is an authentic Tang Dynasty banknote (or a well-made replica) is accurate? From what I can read it speaks of “the Great Tang” but I'm not familiar enough with pre-Mongol banknotes to tell if it's genuine. Since Liao, Western Xia, Jurchen-Jin, and Song Dynasty topics are your area of expertise I thought 💭 that you would maybe know of Tang Dynasty-related topics as well. Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. The old DoCoMo emoji designs have been on Commons since 2007?[edit]

I'm bringing this up here, since I am not entirely sure how to proceed, since the user responsible (User:٢١٩.١٧٤.١٥٨.٢٢٥~commonswiki a.k.a. ja:User:٢١٩.١٧٤.١٥٨.٢٢٥) was last seen on any Wikimedia project about a decade ago, and since I am hoping you can share more experience on this front…

The existence of Category:i-mode characters has come to my attention. If the filenames are anything to go by, these appear to be glyphs for characters from the TRON character set, similarly to how Category:Juki-Gana contains glyphs for TRON-encoded hentaigana (containing only 16×16px bitmap images until relatively recently). In this case, they appear to be 16×16px emoji bitmaps, following the pre-2013 DoCoMo emoji designs in black and transparent. They appear to have been on Commons for about thirteen years, since early 2007, and so for the majority of Wikimedia Commons' existence.

Although the images are used on the Japanese Wikipedia page for the DoCoMo i-mode emoji set, the category seems to have otherwise gone largely unnoticed, possibly because it was a subcategory of Category:Pictograms and not Category:Emoji, since it was created (as a category) several years before Category:Emoji was created. I will probably move it to Category:Emoji or a subcategory after I post this.

However, the uploader labelled them as own work under the GFDL (with BY-SA having been added during the licence update). Since they match the DoCoMo designs, any claim to authorship by the uploader seems, to put it delicately, rather questionable. However, they are simple single-colour 1bpp 16×16px raster images of coded characters, so it could be argued that they fall in the public domain... indeed, they do so rather more plausibly than the high resolution rasterisations of the entirety of Webdings which have been on Commons since early 2018 marked with {{PD-font}}.

Even though they are only 16 x 16 b/w images, some of the designs are quite complex and distinctive, and I personally feel that they should be eligible for copyright protection. I very much disapprove of the abuse of {{PD-font}} to claim PD for anything that appears in a font, especially graphic symbols, so I would not support applying {{PD-font}} to the 16x16 images. My suggestion would be to nominate them all for deletion as the "own work" license is obviously spurious, and see what the consensus is. BabelStone (talk) 10:18, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's a shame that you choose not to upload 20th (twentieth) century works anymore, I greatly appreciate your works and often come across some while reading Wikipedia. I also believe that the postcards are in the public domain but I know that the People's Republic of China has a rather low threshold of originality for copyrights so I couldn't say it with certainty.

Anyhow, my WikiWorkload is already extremely big and I decided that while I do want to import more traditional Oriental seals to Wikimedia Commons that I probably would be wiser to not do it because I still have (well, want) to write about the entire monetary and fiscal histories of the Qing Dynasty dynasty, list as much Chinese amulets, charms, and talismans (talismen?), and import entire collections of African and Asian coins, bamboo money, well, the list goes on and I haven't been making much progress due to a lot of personal issues in real life I really wish that I had infinite team or "copy myself" to do more work, it's a feeling I am sure you understand.
