- Masen (talk) 03:33, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Gare Avignon TGV - Perspective by JM Rosier.JPG[edit]

Bonjour,

Cordialement

--Jmrosier (talk) 12:46, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

81.240.24.72 14:49, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

— Xavier, 10:45, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I've seen that you categorize the pictures I upload. thank you for your help.
boing-boing is a bot I use to upload pictures from flickr. I could upload a whole set in one command.
The categorization is done more or less automaticaly using a scripts and based on the tags of the flickr images.
That's why I recategorize the pictures afterward and why I use temporary cats like Category:People_of_Sikkim_to_sort to avoid missing a category.
Thank you again for your help and I'm sorry if you think you do useless work with those uploads.
Kind regards

You're right. I'm not link to those uploads. User may have mimic my bot boing-boing. - Zil (d) 16:21, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That explains it, thanks. The example maybe was File:Flickr - aktivioslo - Sofia Nizharadze - Georgia (1).jpg. However, I wasnt aware of this flickr upload methode, but I have to say that it is very intransparent. User:FlickreviewR/Images never editted by their reviewer is messed up with reviews from you and uploader Boing-Boing, Multichills BotMultichill or Diaas Dudubot. Such mistaken copy&pastes - to AGF - or fakes - regretably I have seen to much of them - are not very often but it happens. A review without any confirming edit by the reviewer isnt a review, I suggest to use the blank Flickrreview and have flickrreviewr done the review work. --Martin H. May be the page could be improved to exclude when the bot upload the image with his owner review ? - Zil (d) 16:39, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think, and so my suggestion, that the bots have to be improved. Its not clear if e.g. File:Flickr - nmorao - CP Tdgs, Estação de Vila Nova de Gaia, 1994.10.06.jpg was ever reviewed. If sometimes in the future a copyright holder tries to revoke the license and your bot logs (if any) are not at hand we have nothing to proofe Flickr-change-of-license in a 100% save way. We have enough flickrreview related delreqs. Its however just a suggetion, the process is not in an optimum, the non-functioning page User:FlickreviewR/Images never editted by their reviewer is only minor nuisance, I dont realy work with this page, I only know that it exists. --Martin H. (talk) 17:02, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have a simple sollution to keep User:FlickreviewR/Images never editted by their reviewer-4 etc working: Can Boing-boing stop flickrreviewing the images in your name and instead just place Flickrreview on the images to have FlickrreviewR review the images? You are uploading the full size versions, so I dont expect FlickrreviewR will have a problem with reviewing and it will not fill any backlogs for reviewing. --Martin H. (talk) 20:42, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do that on the next upload. The goal was to limit the work for the flickrreviewbot. - Zil (d) 18:10, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Latvian politicians[edit]

Hi. I've discovered a gold mine for Latvian politicians at here. The flickr user is Saeima (which is the national parliament of Lativa) and has the official national parliament coat of arms. Given the extent of the photos 2300 odd including valuable ones of sessions like this etc I'd say it is definately a photographer insider of the Saeima. I wondered if you could use a bot to upload all of the photos of the politicians to the commons unless there is some problem. Photos like this are very hard to get hold of; its obvious to me that the person who uploaded them to flickr is the photographer so has the right to release the images under this license. Please can you bot upload them, it won't work when I do it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:11, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll ask some people on wikipedia if they can help with the categorizing. All I can think of is Category:Deputies of the Saeima. The profile ones at least can go in there. US Geograph[edit]

Hi Zil. This post was copied from my message to Jimbo Wales (with no reply):

US photographs[edit]

Copied from Jimbo Wales take page:

Something occurred to me. Unlike the UK where images of most villages can be uploaded from http://www.geograph.org.uk/ there is a considerable problem for many places in the US and Canada obtaining a plentiful supply of decent freely useable photographs for small towns, and even larger ones, one example I can think of is Calabasas, California.... I was wondering Jimmy if your foundation would endorse the idea of running a US version of geograph to photograph every grid square or whatever you use for the United States. Sure it would be an ambitious project, but not as ambitious as wikipedia... This would not only solve our problem of having a poor supply of photographs for many places in the United States but it would build up a highly valuable bank of images over time under a Creative Commons/GFDL license which I am certain many people would find very valuable. I wonder how many times somebody has looked for a freely useable image of a small US town or unincorporated place and found no images on it. Given that geograph is clearly a massive success and has suppled the majority of British villages with images, I wonder if it would be too much to ask if the foundation could host a US version of such a project to attract people into a project which would photograph the United States in such detail? I know that the United States is considerably larger than the UK but I don't see why such a project couldn't be a success for most places with a high internet population. If I can get some sort of backing I'll make a formal proposal on this.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:21, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

I second this - if this can be made viable, it would be a great idea. (It's

actually something I've considered before; trouble is I'm not net-savvy enough to know where to begin in creating it.) I've done enough photographing of backwoods Virginia to know that free images for much of the country are next-to-impossible to come by at the moment, even for some of the larger/more notable places (see Big Stone Gap, Virginia for but one good example). I know it's a huge country, but the population is pretty large - I don't see why this couldn't work. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:35, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Zils. I and a number of people support the idea of starting a photograph project to photograph every "grid square" of the United States like we have with geograph UK. Given the major success of the geograph UK project I wondered if the foundation would endorse the idea of having one for the US. One of the biggest reasons is the distinct lack of photos we have for many US towns and unincorporated communites and indeed the lack of photos of some of these please on the web. I think it would prove a valuable resource given the traffic that wikipedia and related projects gets I am sure contributors to photographing the United States in such detail would gradually increase and the project would take off. If so we would then have a plentiful supply of photographs for just about anywhere and indded a valuable US geo photo bank. Obviously a project for many developing countries in Africa and Asia may not be possible but I am certian that given the amount of traffic wikimedia gets such a project could be extended to countries like Germany, Netherlands, France Italy etc. Please let me know what yout think. The project could be a sister project to the commons but it would need to be set out in a grid square type format like the geograph website is. Naturally uploaded photos would simultaneously be place din the commons. If possible can you respond when you return and contact Sue Gardner or whoever you think might see some light on such a project. I really want to get some support on this, so if you think it is a good idea please help me spread the word and get some support and contact the foundation.

Teofilo (talk) 21:32, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Guinea[edit]

Hi. Can you upload most of the images under here, particularly the photographs by User:Attawayjl. It has some much needed images of Guinea and people of Guinea Bissau. The aerial views of Conakry are valuable.. Attawayjl has over 900 free images of Guinea I think which are greatly needed, mostly Senegal and Guinea. You also passed other images from this account like these two images below:

 • The flickr owner ( N. Genin) has hidden these images today but he has other images from the same 2009 event as I note in this link to the flickr account owner's collection of pictures which all still licensed as 'cc by sa generic.'

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Que peut-on faire contre les mal-comprenants ?[edit]

Bonjour,

Jean-Jacques MILAN (talk) 18:02, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My maintenance edits are no "vandalism". Putting digital watermarks, signatures, and any other text, logo etc. indicating authorship, ownership, copyright etc. into any image is strongly discouraged by the policies of commons. The last time i tried to explain it to Jean-Jaques, but he seems not to accept our policies but only hin own wish of a special treatement. Maybe you can explain it to him better in french, to re frain putting digital logos in his images.- Andy king50 (talk) 18:09, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, Jean-Jacques MILAN could you please assume good faith ?
Well then Andy king50, it's a good idea to remove watermarks but here it is more like a signature on a painting. So some people would like to keep the signature to illustrate for example fr:Studio Harcourt... May be we could keep 2 versions of those files. - Zil (d) 00:26, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Solution has been found with the help of Rama
The template Studio Harcourt signature has been created. You could use it on Studio Harcourt Image. Check those 2 pictures :

Bonjour,

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Bonjour. Thanks for uploading File:Limnic degassing1.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Limnic degassing1.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference[edit]

Hello Zil

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).
