Thank you for your hard work here on maps. I think what I am asking is small and easy but let me know if I am wrong! The location map of the United Kingdom is lovely but the fact it misses water bodies means Northern Ireland looks very wrong: File:England location map.svg only shows a little bit of Northern Ireland, but does show how much of a difference Lough Neagh makes! Would it be possible to add Loch Neagh, and as a bonus perhaps other major water features like the England map does?

A second request, could the English Regions shown on the England location map be included on the UK Location Map as a derivative, File:United Kingdom NUTS 1.svg? At the moment there is File:United Kingdom NUTS 1.png but this has obvious disadvantages. (I apologise if this isn't the best place to ask, as I am new here. I only ask because you created the original UK location map, if you can tell me where to ask instead then that would be helpful too!) CarefulCounting (talk) 16:36, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The location maps of European countries were the first which were created so they have a bit different style e.g. the missing water bodies. I will add them soon. And it won't be a big deal to create a NUTS 1 location map of the UK, either. NNW (talk) 16:48, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! Putting the water bodies on will make a big difference. Only just noticed the png was a redlink, it's on enwiki but not Commons, but hopefully it will be deprecated soon anyway ;) CarefulCounting (talk) 18:14, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now the main location map shows the lakes and there is File:United Kingdom NUTS location map.svg, too. NNW (talk) 14:14, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I cannot see any difference after you uploaded a new version. It's now 1160 x 1190 px instead of 1169 x 1198 px but I hope that wasn't the reason for your upload. What "concordance" to which other maps do you mean? NNW (talk) 18:44, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, actually, it is a kind of revert, because it is to refer to refer to a serie of maps which the exclaves are deleted (and so deleting exclaves on this map are the logical following of the new uploads). But I never use the word revert, because I consider that this word is for vandals, not for lambda users. Varmin (talk) 19:00, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location maps[edit]

I see you created File:Poland location map.svg. Would you be able to help create several historical Poland location maps? Barnstar and request[edit]

For your outstanding locator maps.
For your outstanding locator maps.

Hi! I have recently started working a lot on location maps in the Norwegian Wikipedia, and I soon realized you have made most of the location maps that are used, and you definately deserve a barnstar (or money, but that I don't have readily available). Thank you so much for all your great work!

Now, I also have a request; you have made locator maps for some of the counties of Norway, like File:Norway Akershus location map.svg, but about ~half of the counties are still missing. Would you be able to create them as well? I would do it myself to save you the work, but I don't have the necessary skills at all I'm afraid.

Either way, keep up the great work! :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:33, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! 6 of 20 maps (including Oslo, I think it has to be like file:Berlin location map.svg) are made. Before you came they were mainly used in nn:WP but with a second – and bigger – project taking them more often I will try to accelerate the process. Of course it will take some time. :o) NNW (talk) 14:12, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that would be awesome. Do take your time, there is no hurry at all. :-) And having Oslo like Berlin would be nice, that is a very good map. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:39, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sudan maps[edit]

Hi, i see that you are rebuilding the map of Sudan File:Sudan location map.svg -> File:Sudan (2005-2011) location map.svg. Do you can update the maps in Category:Locator maps of Sudan? Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 21:02, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! As far as I know the final boundary between Sudan and South Sudan isn't fixed right now. So I would prefer to wait until we know for sure how the boundary will look like. NNW (talk) 09:38, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

On my talkpage Denelson83 left the following message regarding File:Canada British Columbia location map 2.svg:

You haven't gotten the regional district boundaries quite correct. You need to split the Comox Valley Regional District away from the Strathcona Regional District on Vancouver Island. -- Denelson83 (talk) 09:36, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As this map is based on your map File:Canada British Columbia location map.svg this message also concerns your map. Could you please take a look at it?

hello[edit]

When I edit SVG files this problem always occurs: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2011_Syria_protests.svg

I have now realized that the image I edit must be on the same place as the square behind it (I use inkscape.)

How do I set the square to being exactly the same size as your image? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 19:33, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have an English version of Inkscape but if you press Shift+Ctrl+D (it's down in the File menu) you will get a window where you can adjust size. NNW (talk) 11:57, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Found it earlier, I have some other questions. If you look at this image: [1], you can see that "Baniyas" and "Hama" touches each other, and "deaths" is also outside the picture, but not if I press on the image (full resolution), how do I fix this? The image also, if I use it in a Wikipedia infobox, the text is murky and barely readable, what type of font should I use, or is it something else I should do? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 19:40, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You should take a font that is used by Wikimedia, a list of those can be found here. DejaVu is preferred by many. NNW (talk) 19:55, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I dont have DejaVu in Inkscape, do you know where I can get it? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 22:12, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a good source. But You have to install it at your operating system, thats not inkscape spezific. Greetings Lencer (talk) 06:41, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One more question, in this image:[2] part of the occupied territory is striped, how do I do that effect in inkscape? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 12:13, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to do it with Inkscape. I don't work with it that intensive. NNW (talk) 13:08, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it to Dejavu, although the letters are in the image now:[3] when I try to use it in an infobox the letters are still murky and difficult to read.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 17:16, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish thumbnail map[edit]

I was editing the article for a small Spanish village Santa Cilia in en:wikipedia when I noticed that the small map puts the village in the wrong place, too far east in Aragon.

-- purple acid 22:54, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Map coordinates[edit]

Hello, I’m a bit new at maps, may I ask how you obtain the coordinates for all your maps? I was working with this map on Wikipedia with and it didn’t work out the way I wanted. So I thought that maybe the coordinates weren’t completely right. Either that, or I’m doing it wrong ;) (Also possible since I’m new at this but it worked fine with this map which was made by you). Nevertheless, how do you work them out exactly? I’d also like to thank you for all your incredible work on maps btw. :) --Lundgren8 (t · c) 21:54, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! There are several ways to get the coordinates of a map and I think that every mapmaker here in WP uses a different way. I have taken an extra extension for my vector graphics application that shows them. If you have got Google Earth you can click here to get a kml file which shows the Bretagne location map in Google Earth (and you will see the coordinates are correct). If you tell me in which article you had problems to use that map I might help you better. NNW (talk) 08:48, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see! Well thing is I was trying to make a geobox locator template, which I had already done with your map of Nova Scotia, which can be found here. But when I tried to do exactly as I did in that template for Brittany, it didn’t work out, the coordinates didn’t show up. And when that problem occurred with the Nova Scotia-template, it turned out that I had got the coordinates slightly wrong (or maybe the ratio, I don’t remember). That lead me to believe that maybe the coordinates were wrong, but then I’m not sure how to do it. Maybe you have an idea? Many thanks for your kind help. --Lundgren8 (t · c) 11:48, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see it has to be this way:

{{#switch:{{{1}}}| | top = 49.00 | bottom = 47.20 | left = -5.25 | right = -0.90 | ratio = 0.62 }}<noinclude>{{Mall:Geobox locator/info|namn=Bretagne|bild=Bretagne region location map.svg}} [[Kategori:Geobox locator|{{PAGENAME}}]]</noinclude>

NNW (talk) 12:17, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I had missed the minuses. However it doesn’t still seem to work. :( Thanks for your help anyway. :) --Lundgren8 (t · c) 17:55, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I just created sv:Mall:Geobox locator Bretagne and it works. NNW (talk) 07:29, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wut? Thank you very much for your help, I really appriciate it, but I can’t seem to figure out what I did wrong. Thanks again! --Lundgren8 (t · c) 12:03, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PRC Provincial Maps[edit]

Could you create maps similar to File:China Yunnan location map.svg for the remaining province-level divisions (Shanxi, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Chongqing, Shaanxi, and Gansu)? Thanks. And please reply here...I don't check my Commons account often --HXL49 (talk) 03:59, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! It's planned to create them. It will take some time as I am busy in real life and promised to finish the location maps of Norwegian counties, too. NNW (talk) 08:40, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for Chongqing and Fujian. Henan should be last because English Wiki already has the corresponding template. For Fujian, do you mind removing the dotted lines? All three demarcate the divisions between Fujian, PRC and Fujian, ROC, and since the file is titled "China Fujian", not "PRC Fujian", the dotted lines should be removed and the colouring for at least Kinmen changed to blue or something, to match File:Fujian prfc map.png. I think this is less of a hassle than moving the files and templates. Thanks much —HXL's Roundtable and Record 18:09, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The dotted lines show a border that belongs to the most guarded borders in Asia. It would be strange not to show that. I inserted some further lines to show that these islands belong to the province of Fujian and are not only governed by the Republic of China. A different colour (like blue in File:Fujian prfc map.png) means the same, it is just a different way to show the border. I also uploaded a second version (File:China Fujian2 location map.svg) in which these islands are shown with the colour of mainland Fujian. So you can choose which to use. Copyright verletzt?[edit]

Location maps of Norwegian counties (request)[edit]

Hello NordNordWest. You're doing a fantastic job on all the location maps. I know it has been requested before, but I'd really love you to add location maps for the remaining Norwegian counties (Aust-Agder, Buskerud, Finnmark, Hedmark, Nord-Trøndelag, Oppland, Sør-Trøndelag, Telemark, Troms). Several of the existing maps are being used extensively on large wikis, most notably the Norwegian (bokmål) Wikipedia, and some are also widely used on the English Wikipedia (example). Mathias-S (talk) 12:44, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location map of Bosnia and Herzegovina[edit]

While I like it, I requested in English map lab to add the regions of Republika Srpska (here is a map of them Srpska Regions). Here is the result Bosnia and Herzegovina location map-2. Now, my question is if you think if the borders are done properly of the newly added regions (I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina and I think the map is pretty good) and if you think it has reasons to replace you old Bosnia and Herzegovina location map? And I know that more detailed features should only been added to psychical maps, but the Buško lake takes 1,1% of territory of BiH and I think it deserves to be added to the final map with regions of RS. The Buško lake lies on the border with Croatia, you shouldn't have much problem finding it here: UN map of BiH. Ramsko and Jablaničko lake could also been added, but it would be awkward to see Jablaničko without the Neretva river, while Ramsko could easily been added without any rivers, just like Buško, but it's more then three times smaller. And also, as I don't have the .svg file of the map with regions of RS, is there a way to upload that file over yours or do I have to request that from the one who made it? AnelZukic (talk) 00:53, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would have been easier if you had ask me first. :o) I added the regions in Republika Srpska and lake Buško. The other lakes are too small as most location maps are used with 250 px or less. NNW (talk) 11:09, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your licence tag[edit]

Hi, I've noticed a minor inconsistency with User:NordNordWest/Licence, and how you use it. You licence your work under cc-by-sa-3.0 unported. The English text refers to the unported CC page, but to the German legal code. This means it is pointing to two different licences: So which licence applies? If its the unported one, then the code for the German licence is the wrong legal info. The German-language section doesn't have that issue.

2 solutions I can see: Change the English-language section (and possibly the German too) to point to the unported code, or change everything (including licence tags) to point to {{Cc-by-sa-3.0-de}}. The various cc-by-sa-3.0 licences are interchangeable, but they are still different entities. The second option is more work, but better matches your intentions I think - as usage in Germany would be governed by the -de code.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:50, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You're right, I have to adjust it. I think I choose your second option. It will take some time to change all files but that's the prize I have to pay for being inattentive. Regards, NNW (talk) 18:00, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maps[edit]

Hi! I used your excellent Swaziland location map to make district location maps (for example: File:Swaziland - Shiselweni.svg). I'm not really sure if I got the attribution part right. Regards Profoss (talk) 10:40, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You named the source and the author of the source and didn't change the licenses. Everything's fine. Regards, NNW (talk) 11:04, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, I've been keeping myself adapting your maps in to locatormaps. I was working on File:Norway Buskerud location map.svg when I noticed that the border between Gol and Nes was missing. Profoss (talk) 02:39, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(see File:Buskerud-kommuner.gif for the correct border. Profoss (talk) 02:40, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And no one from Gol or Nes protested. :o) Thanks, it's corrected now. NNW (talk) 09:14, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, no worries, They've got their own locator maps now too. :) Profoss (talk) 19:24, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Viele Grüße, NNW (talk) 12:50, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wunderbar, Danke für's Richten. Grüße diba (talk) 12:55, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, long time haven't speak,

I've noticed that the map of Paraguay missing the border between Argentina and Bolivia. I think I've saw the same thing in few other maps, I'll check if I'll find something I'd let you know. thanks, GilCahana (talk) 22:02, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Strange thing. When I added the rivers that piece of border got lost. It's fixed now. Thanks for the notice. NNW (talk) 09:38, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Niger location map[edit]

Hi! I wasn't sure if I should take this up with you or user:Carport, but I'm assuming you're both part of the same German map making collective :). I've converted a fair few of your maps in to locator maps, and I was wondering if you could make a new version of file:Niger location map.svg. The existing one is a little bit hard to work with... :) Profoss (talk) 02:03, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Carport stopped working on location maps. First I have to check that file before I can say anything about it. NNW (talk) 09:39, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I made a little cleanup but I didn't want to create a completly new file. I think I now it's easier to work with it. NNW (talk) 09:54, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look on Category:SVG locator maps of Niger (location map scheme). There you'll find the locator maps for the regions (I won't do the 2nd-tier departments) and also sort of a location map (File:BLANK in Niger.svg) which could be a nice template for a top-tier only location map.
Africa is done now. That means that Commons provides for all top-tier subdivisons of all sovereign countries worldwide common locator maps. I didn't replace all maps on de:WP. This was the case if the old maps were outstanding. The only exception is the Bahamas, where a nice template lacks. @NNW: I did some research on the subdivisons of the Bahamas myself. I didn't come to any helpful conclusions, though. But don't care too much about these tiny islands. If you could find any solution, I would definitely very grateful otherwise I wouldn't be mad on this minor issue. Also keine Panik wegen der Bahamas....Vielelicht ergibt sich ja mal irgendwas irgendwann--TUBS 13:27, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the image move[edit]

Thanks for moving [6] - much appreciated. :-) Mike Peel (talk) 01:21, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. :o) NNW (talk) 09:36, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recat[edit]

Not exactly. It is a big mess, because some maps are in Category: Location maps of the United States, but they do not exist in the "Map of state". Other, identical, the maps are in the "Map of state", but they do not exist in Category: Location maps of the United States. According to me, "Location maps of the United States" are the place for ONLY U.S. maps, not maps of states that are in the lower category. Now, to find the map of the state, we have to know about other locations. That makes no sense.--Vladek Komorek (talk) 12:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If your way of thinking is correct, we should redirect ALL locational in the state categories to this category. And what then? We have a lot of them in the states categories. Don't you think that the problem affects ALL the location maps? For example, I try, to do location maps of U.S. states for plWiki, using maps with a small location within the U.S., in the corner. It takes me a lot of time, because I have to look for them in several places.--Vladek Komorek (talk) 12:17, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BTW. You should create subcategory of "Location maps by state" within " Location maps of the United States".--Vladek Komorek (talk) 12:22, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, but for the average user, which is not yet very familiar with English language, it will be easier to find the right map, if it will be a sub-category "Locator maps of state", and this subcategory will be in the "Map of the state" and "Location maps of the United States ". Seeing a lot of maps in the state category, not every user distinguish between "locator map" from the normal map. But this is your locator maps, and the decision is yours.--Vladek Komorek (talk) 12:57, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Locator maps for Poland[edit]

Could you create maps for each voivodeships in Poland (16 maps)? I tried to do it, but it was not really what came out File:Woj mazowieckie - powiaty.png. Your maps are much better. Some of them are in the Category:Locator maps of voivodeships of Poland--Vladek Komorek (talk) 12:57, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I promised to create location maps of Norwegian counties. When this is done I can try to make those of Poland. NNW (talk) 18:26, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.--Vladek Komorek (talk) 22:15, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Locator map of US states with a small state location within the U.S., in the corner[edit]

Most of the locator map of US states have small map in the corner, which shows location of the state within US. Could add it to other maps? It is very helpful for people who don't know location of the state within US. Thank you. --Vladek Komorek (talk) 08:30, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Which locator maps are you talking about? Locator maps of states show the state within the USA, see Category:SVG locator maps of states in the United States (location map scheme) or Category:Locator maps of states of the United States. NNW (talk) 12:09, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have no clue how this is actually done, but this french Wikipedia site may point to a a very easy semi-automated way of how to insert little overview maps to common location maps.--TUBS 12:38, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nice idea by fr:WP. It's via fr:Modèle:Carte en coin. NNW (talk) 12:42, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Plik:Karte Freilichtmuseum Groß Raden.png[edit]

I can give you translation, of course :) I wish put up picture in Polish on Polish Wikipedia on site http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groß_Raden where is your map in German. Avadoro (talk) 00:21, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
