Julien Assange Map Correction and Update[edit]

Hello TUBS,

I've noticed that in the File:Slovenia, administrative divisions - de - colored.svg, the area of the Municipality of Miklavž na Dravskem Polju is labelled as "Majšperk". Could you please correct that?

Also, since 2012, Kazakhstan has established more regions and city of state significance. Could you please update the the File:Kazakhstan, administrative divisions - de - colored.svg?

Thank you very much. --Potapt (talk) 00:19, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Slovenia map has been corrected. Thx for telling me --TUBS 08:18, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Azerbaijan, administrative divisions - de - colored.svg[edit]

Hi! Can you please remove the dotted line from this map and its other versions to better reflect the borders of 2023? Thank you Mastersun25 (talk) 13:41, 15 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I probably will when the dust in the region settles. Since the first conception of my maps borders (de-facto and de-jure) changed multiple times. And de-jure (as seen by one side) will be redrawn again as of 1/1/2024 as far as I understand. And unfortunately nobody knows if that's the end of borders changes in this region. I'm no even talking about regional borders. Are you sure that AZ will reinstitute regional borders as they were before the conflict began. I mean, probably a lot has changed (or will change) in this region population-wise and it's at least likely that regional borders will be redrawn to some degree in order to facilitate administration. But this will take time I assume. I don't have time to redraw all my maps constantly. However, I feel you ask for a map that primarily reflects the Azerbaijan (not exclusive) view on the borders (which now coincides with de-facto birders?). Have you checked my other in that very same category? I believe I also provide maps that exclusively provide the Azerbaijan view, don't I?

PS: checked my maps in that category and in the corresponding locator Maps category. Unfortunately, unlike in many other region with -let's say - fluid borders, I really didn't provide maps that reflect all possible de-jure and de-facto views. My maps reflect rather old views I have to admit. After the war a couple of years ago, I obviously also "refused" to update the maps and incorporate the new frontlines. My fellow map maker and compatriot Nordnordwest corrected most locator maps (e.g. File:Agdam District in Azerbaijan 2021.svg) after 2021. But your assessment is correct, there's no map (administrative nor locator) that reflects the current situation. Usually I wait for NordNordWest to update the corresponding location map File:Azerbaijan adm location map.svg. I've to check with him whether he approves most recent changes to his map. I trust him - not necessarily other mapmakers (the current map could be correct though). But as I said: I won't do this until the dust settles and this could be years I'm afraid. But go ahead: it's an SVG. It's really easy to edit. Edit whatever you like. Upload a new version or upload a map with a new name. Nordnordwest made a suggestion for a naming scheme (e.g. keep the name and add "2023")

Maps of municipalities in Iceland[edit]

Hi. I've started creating maps of historical municipalities of Iceland (1904-2020). Some of them are very small and I thought I'd create a small box of the entire country to show where the municipality is located. is:Mynd:Andakílshreppur.png here is an example. Now I've noticed that I should probably do it the other way around (like Rhode Island). My question is, how can I create this effect in QGIS, is it possible to do it automagically or do I have to do it manually? (I have about 300 maps to make so anything to make the workflow easier will be greatly appreciated) Steinninn ♨ 04:10, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. I found out how to do it. --Steinninn ♨ 18:35, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not answering. Totally missed your question. Glad you figured that out. --TUBS 19:05, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Correction request for File:Hawaii in United States (zoom) (US50) (-grid).svg[edit]

Hello.

In File:Hawaii in United States (zoom) (US50) (-grid).svg, the position of the Hawaiian Archipelago inside the box is wrong. The islands need to turned to their correct geographical position.

Yours sincerely, Multituberculata (talk) 20:42, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't wrong. It's a mere magnification of the main map. It's the same orientation like on the main map. Is that also wrong? I don't think so. Map projections are sometimes disorientating. --TUBS 21:07, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Normally as Americans we are used to seeing Hawaii where north is up, these are shown where north, from the perspective of Hawaii, is northeast due to the extreme width of the portion of the earth shown. Usually only the 48 states are shown and Alaska and Hawaii are added as insets. It is not “wrong” in the German sense but it does seem strange to American readers. Keizers (talk) 23:48, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
<nerd stuff> It's not wrong either way. It's called math and must follow geometry. Plus, strictly speaking, I highly doubt that most US maps fall in the category you describe as "north is up". Due to the extent of even the contingous US, longitudes most often don't run parallel. Most obvious result: the US Canadian border isn't a straight line. Thus, strictly speaking, "true north" isn't "up" either (just in the projection center).. </nerd stuff>
Of course I get what you're saying. This map isn't a projection you're used to. Thus, it's disorientating. Thus I made maps that are more in line with the maps you're used to. Please check the respective categories. If you like those maps better, please feel free to use them. Frankly, I would never use the map in question - it's simply strange. But I can't dictate what users use in Wikipedia articles.: --TUBS 06:06, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
