You have tagged Image:British Battlecruiser HMS Hood sinking.jpg, Image:British Battlecruiser HMS Hood explosion.jpg with PD-USGov-Military-Navy. That template says that the pictures were created by a "sailor or employee of the U.S. Navy," but the description of that pictures say that they were "taken from the German heavy battlecruiser Prinz Eugen." It seems very unlikely that there were U.S. Navy personnel on board a German battlecruiser in 1941, so could you correct the licence tags? --bjh21 14:29, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, creating a new template seems like the right approach. Thanks. --bjh21 14:23, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About the deletion request of Image:Persepolis_terrace_4.jpg[edit]

Hello Cool Cat
I've seen you've deleted Image:Persepolis_terrace_4.jpg I listed in Detetion request and shortly after you restored it, saying « ongoing OTRS process ». What is an OTRS process ?
I posted also a message to the uploader about others pictures from Livius that have less license information (it is not precised « provided that no fees are charged for their distribution »). They are for example Image:Bishapur_relief_2_1.jpg and Image:Kangavar2.jpg (see his contribution list). I asked him to give more information to know if Livius releases them in a free license.
Thanks for your answer. Sting 17:55, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS stands for "Open-source Ticket Request System". On Wikimedia projects, it generally refers to the ticket system where volunteers respond to emails that are sent to Wikimedia, including general information (in several languages), press queries and permission emails. On Commons, "OTRS" generally refers only to this later type.
Basically the copyright holder and OTRS people communicate. Image will be redeleted if OTRS doesn't work out. See the section above this one on my talk page. --Cat out 18:05, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sting. The OTRS process concerning Livius's persepolis images was completed. I'll update the picture's info page this afternoon. Now, concerning Livius's Bishapur images: being new on wiki, I wasn't aware of the procedures when I loaded the pictures. Since I established a good contact with their authors, I'll Start an OTRS procedure soon (means in a few days, as I don't have much time this week, and provided that it shall take some to check the whole process). Thx for your comprehension. Regards. Concerning the map of Persepolis: the map doesn't come from Iran Chamber but from the original one from Ernst Ertzfeld's work in the 3Oes, oriental institute of Chicago. Iran Chamber as the Cercle of Ancient Iranian Studies or Livius, simply reworked it. The OI doesn't claim any copyright on the sheme, but on the photographies of the mission's work. Anyway, this plan is just a temporary one as the article is still under harsh work. It jus helps the reviewers. We're waiting Fabienkhan's better plan and then, I may delete mine. Therefore, a faster deletion shall not be a true problem.//// bonjour Sting. Amicalement Pentocelo 09:15, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All the concerned pictures (persepolis from Livius) were updated with the OTRS ticket. Do you agree removing the deletion request of the said pictures?/// Toutes les images concernées (Persépolis par livius ont été mises à jour) avec le Ticket OTRS.

Amicalement Pentocelo 08:23, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Petite question SVG[edit]

Salut Sting,

Wind Rose Aguiar[edit]

I think I need your help again. The svg version of this image (here) does not shown correctly. The origin of the problem is in the colored rings (the "holes"), which are treated as filled circles by the wiki system, although everything seems correct in the svg application. Can you please help? I still do not know how to avoid the problem. Alvesgaspar 22:14, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on it. Apparently MediaWiki does not support a fill-rule property on the svg element, so the whole image is drawn as if fill-rule were set to "nonzero" (the default) for all shapes. I'm redrawing it to eliminate the dependance on said property. --Fibonacci 15:11, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh !

Fabienkhan 10:42, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is not orinal map from CIA. This is YOUR work - please, specify terms of use for it more exactly. Temporarily I have put on this image PD-self license tag. Alex Spade 15:48, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jolies cartes[edit]

Salut !

Bonne continuation !! Benh 21:39, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maps[edit]

Hi Sting, I'm Lencer from the german Wiki-Projekt Kartenwerkstatt. We rework maps, but also edit new maps, actually is there a wish about Peloponnes-map and a better map for Aegean Sea. I find your maps like Image:Crete relief map-fr.svg and will say that the backgrounds are fantastic (like the hole map). I know GMT with SRTM and ETOPO-data but never heard about 3DEM or LCC. I like to ask You about two empty backgrounds for Peloponnes and Aegean Sea, but I'm also really interesting in doing these backgrounds by myself. Could you help me? Please answer here. Thank You and sorry about my Englisch. --Lencer 05:28, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice to hear from you. Be so kind and make sure that the dimension of peloponnes is like this map. I would like to make a map-series in one dimension. The link for maps colorimetric conventions are, also without french understanding, very interesting. I understand the RGB-code without any french words. I will check this out next time intensive. Thanks for Your support. Greetings Lencer 14:30, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The Problem is, thismap is my template for borders and other line/curve objekts. So if there any chance to get a protection like this, it will be fine (rotating the template is no problem for me but georeferencing/geocoding is dificulty. But if there is a big problem to get a protection like the template then do it in UTM. btw, for the Aegean Sea it's never mind. You can answer here! --Lencer 15:22, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
ok, I'll do at least the Peloponnesian map with a geographic projection. In fact and looking at it better, the map given as reference seems to follow an UTM projection (convergent longitudes), so I'll do it this way. Sting 19:44, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Absolute amazing, thank You for the blank map. The size is no problem. On which way did You generate the coastline? I have 3DEM, and its easy to use, but my result isn't fine. Next time I would like to discuss the best way in generate the maps. Greetings Lencer 05:08, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thx for Information. I want to ask: Did You plan a french map for Peloponnes with Your blank map? There is currently no map in the french artcile. I ask about it, that we do no double work. Grettings Lencer 11:35, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sting,

I really appreciate your comments and critiques.

Also, I took a good look at your work. Very, very nice. I love the maps, which happen to be something I like a bit. I have a small collection of topo maps from Mexico... nothing big, but somehow I am attracted to them.

I live in Mexico, and recently I went to the archives of Zacatecas state and they let me take a look at their colonial map collection. In fact, photographing maps is a project that I have, it is project 549-IV-C, but I will get around to it!

Your antiquities photos are great, I would like to nominate them but they will get shot down because of size... want to bet?

Anyway, it is indeed a pleasure to be honestly criticized by someone who contributes to this effort like you. Your critisism is very welcome, even if you do not like some of my photos!

Salut,

Thanks for your note, and I hope we can standardize[edit]

Thanks for your note on my Talk page. I certainly hope we can standardize on map colors, etc. I realize that we won't get map makers to go back and re-color their maps, but perhaps we can at least convince new map makers to use our colors. Of course, we have to agree first.  : )

By the way, you have done fantastic work on topographic maps. Truly amazing! MapMaster 20:59, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gradiants base-10
1 0->25m
2 25->50
3 ->100
4 ->150
5 ->200
6 ->300
7 ->400
8 ->500
9 ->600
10 ->700
11 ->800
12 ->900
13 ->1.000
Or on voit venir plein de grosses couleurs saturées.

Topographical map of Sinai peninsula[edit]

Hi Sting! First, your maps looks awesome. You have done one map wich shows location of Petra Image:Petra location map-fr.svg. When you have enough time, could you do topographical map on Sinai peninsula (including some areas in north-east Egypt and whole Israel). That map would be very usefull and with little editing it cold replace at least these images: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and n+2 other maps. Thanks. --QWerk 13:15, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Gibraltar[edit]

Hello again Sting! Now that the map has been completely updated (I see Gibmetal77 brought some minor things to your attention) would you be happy that I nominate it for featured picture status? Seeing as most of your other maps have passed unanimously, this one is no different IMO. Cheers, RedCoat 17:34, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SVG maps[edit]

Hi...

I have found your great image of the map of greece here: [2], and I wanted to tell you that I really appreciate it.

I would like also to ask you for something: I am an Israeli Wikipedian (my profile: here); I would like to make more contributions to Wikipedia, but I prefer doing it in areas that I like; I really love cartography, but besides using inkspace and playing a bit with GIS viewers, I really don't have any experience with that.

So: I thought, if you're not to busy, that maybe you can point me to the right place to begin studying it, because the internet is not so friendly about XML/SVG tutorials; I do know how to paint a rectangle, or to embed an image, but that's about it.

I have understood that that specific image that you've created has the topographic part embedded - so, I would also like to know how to create such images (as the one you've embedded) but of very specific places (a costume data, not one from the free world GIS; for example, a map of a specific trail near Jerusalem, with costume topographic data which is specific to the trail's place).

If you can't help me (for any reason), just tell me, it's ok... :-) - I'll keep searching.

Thanks ahead, Peleg

Hey - thanks for your reply!
I will check those links, of course. Indeed, there is no single site in the internter that teaches it well... I will wait for your tutorials, and if I'll be able to, I'll also translate them from English to Hebrew.
Thanks again!
Peleg

Maps : scale and accuracy (again)[edit]

This section is copied from the discussion page of user:Alvesgaspar.

Hi Alvesgaspar.
I'm contacting you again about the scales of the maps regarding the accuracy of the elements showed.
In search of more information about this subject, I found the U.S. National Map Accuracy Standards where it is said (resumed) that they use an horizontal precision equivalent to 0.5mm (1/50th of inch) on the edited map. For the French Institut Géographique National, it seems they adopted a precision of 0.1mm for all (?) their maps. As example, this would give an horizontal accuracy for a point on a 1:100,000 scale map at 50m close for the U.S. maps and 10m for the French ones. A big difference !
On the other side, you gave me few months ago a precision on edited maps of 0.25mm, an average of the two above. By the way, is it the Portuguese standard ?
Isn't there an international standard concerning the geographic precision one can expect with maps at a given scale coming from different countries ? If not, mentioning the scale alone on the map doesn't make much sense if there's no indication of the standard used.
In this case, which value / standard would you recommend to use for the digital maps here in Wikipedia ?
Thanks. Sting 19:22, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 • I don't think there is any international standard for planimetric accuracy, aplying to all kinds of maps, especially to digital maps. But those standards exist for particular types of maps, like topographic maps and nautical charts. When I was active on the field, the value of 0,25mm was adopted in nautical cartographcy because it corresponds (more or less) to the smallest distance that the human eye can descriminate. Also, it is a common practise in hydrographic surveying to use a scale at least twice the scale of the chart the data will be used in. I agree that a value of 0,5mm seems too large and 0,1mm way too small. Of course, it is not this value that matters "per se" but the corresponding planimetric accuracy (on the field) required for a particular scale. During the next weeks I'll be talking with people involved in chart making. I'll ask them about the modern international standards and let you know. At the meantime, I would recomemnd a value not larger than 1/3mm. Cheers, Alvesgaspar 19:51, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer (I didn't pay attention you replied on this page). Yes, I'm quiet confused with this story of scale and accuracy as I don't have cartographic formation. If I understood well until now, there's no evident relation between the two because each country uses different standards and as you say, this may also vary depending on the type of the map.
I'm also confused with what you call « scale » : usually people understand for « scale » the ratio between a linear distance on the edited map and its equivalent on the ground, but you use this term to characterize the precision of the map. Are there special words to make the difference between the two ?
For example, I have a printed map at a 1:100,000 scale (1cm = 1km with a spatial accuracy of 100,000 x 0.25mm = 25m). I make a scan, zoom it twice and print it again. Now, my map will be twice larger with a « linear scale » of 1cm = 0.5km but with an « accuracy scale » which will remain the same (25m) : what will be its scale ?
Thanks for clearing this point. Greetings. Sting 15:01, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 • Scale is exactely what you say, i. e. the ratio between the length of a segment on the map and on the ground. We say that a survey have some scale S when the data is collected in the field (and plotted in a field board) with an accuracy equal or better than 0.25 x S (or some other value). For example, in a 1:2,000 survey, the planimetric accuracy should be 0.5m or better. We shouldn't normally enlarge a map, as this will transmit a wrong idea about its accuracy. In your example, and assuming that the spatial accuracy was indeed 25m, nothing is gained by doubling the scale. For several times now, I have stressed the need of including the numerical scale in digital maps, as well as its nominal size (the size at which the scale applies). That is why I have also defended the png format for these maps, so that the images cannot be enlarged beyond its nominal size. -- Alvesgaspar 17:03, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okayyyy ! That's much clearer now : when cartographers talk of « scale », they mean de facto something like « linear scale associated to its standard accuracy ». I think that in most people's mind, this duality isn't evident, at least it wasn't for me until your explanation. The fact you can find edited maps of reasonable size (tourist maps for example) but with a very simplified shape doesn't help. I think also that the fact cartographers never speak of accuracy but only of scale, as well as the indications put on the printed maps, contributes to this confusion (specially when standards differ from one country to another). Scale and accuracy are tightly linked, but almost nobody makes mention of this. That's also a problem with digital maps, whatever their format, because you can download them, up- or downsample them, print them bigger to make them more readable, but you will break this link. Wow ! Not easy to handle !
So before creating a digital map, the best would be to check first the accuracy of the digital data used and only then give it a size in pixels (or number of pixels per inch) for which, when printed at a 1:1 ratio, the linear scale matches the associated precision. Correct ? Sting 23:51, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 • Okayyy, you got it right and I could finally pass my message! Maybe you understand now why I don't feel confortable in reviewing map nominations here, as I have no means of assessing its accuracy. And the accuracy of a map (both positional and thematic accuracy) are the most important elements of its quality. It would be like approving a mathematical formulae just because it looks nice, without checking if it works. I would certainly support the promotion of a map taken from Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" or Ursula Le Guin's "Earthsea" just for their beauty. Or a medieval map, where the known World is circular and divided in three parts, each one of them attributed to each of the three sons of Noah. But not a "home-made" topographic map of unknown accuracy and map projection, constructed with a cheap GPS receiver -- Alvesgaspar 03:36, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good ! One step achieved ! Now, these standards are meant for professional and commercial printed maps made by national geographic institutes. Here we are in the Wikipedia project of encyclopaedia, so should the standards of precision be so rigid as the responsibilities are different ? When I look at a printed atlas of good level, I can notice that the accuracy doesn't seem to be as precise : the shorelines for example are simplified, avoiding the smallest details. Is there some widely accepted accuracy standard for encyclopaedias / atlas ?
An example : for my topographic map of Scotland, to match both the linear and accuracy scale of the topography (1:3,000,000), I have to print the map at a size of 17.5 x 25 cm for which the map looks very highly detailed, far more in my opinion that the ones found in printed encyclopaedias or atlas. And what about the accuracy of the bathymetry (1:4,000,000) ?
I have the same problem with a topographic map of the Red Sea I'm preparing and I would like your advise about it. For the topography, I use NASA's SRTM30 DEMs (accuracy 927m). I extract the bathymetry from Demis maps which seem to use the GTOPO30, so at the same accuracy. For the shorelines, lakes and rivers, I use the vector VMap-0 data which absolute horizontal accuracy, for these data, is 2040m. In the absolute, I should draw the map in a size that will give a printed linear scale of 1:8,160,000 as it is the equivalent accuracy of the VMap-0 but this would make me lose a lot of information for the topography and bathymetry for which the related scale is 1:3,708,000 as their details will be so small that they will be invisible. Beside, what is strange is that several streams and islands are represented at a distance of less than 350 m one of each other (measured in the GIS software), meaning that the precision is higher in these areas. How should I understand this ? I don't know if more accurate free data exists for the rivers, so how should I draw this map ?
Thanks for your advises. Sting 14:28, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 • The key concept that you are missing right now is "map generalization": "the operation which consists in classifying, simplifying and, in general, harmonizing the available information to be included in a map with its scale and purpose" (from my "Dictionary of Cartographic Sciences" - in Portuguese, I'm afraid). Map generalization normally implies a reduction of the complexity of the available data and comprises the following phases: the "classification", in which the geographical features are organized and ordered according to their attributes; the "simplification", which aims the identification of the more relevant feature attributes and the elimintion of unwanted detail; the "exageration", where some of the characteristics (considered to be more relevant) are emphasized; and the "simbolization", which consists in coding and representing graphically the chosen information on the map. Suppose we want to draw two maps of the same area, with different scales, and using the same base data. The important thing to recognize is that the smaller scale map is not a graphical reduction of the larger scale one. If we did that, the available space would be cluttered with unnecessary information and the map would probably be unreadable. Notice that when we divide the linear scale by two, the available area is divided by four. Also, the symbology used in the first map would most probably not be adequate for the second. The truth is the smaller scale map should be considered as a completely different project, with different generalization choices. This principle also applies to the representation of coastlies and islands. It is very common to omit certain details (and islands) in smaller scale maps as a way of making it more clear. The same principle applies when we replace the individual buildings in a large scale urban map by a simple block outline is a smaller scale map. Nothing wrong with it, that is "map generalization". But if you are really interested in Cartography this is not the best way to learn (I mean, from me). My strong advice is to purchase the book "Elements of Cartography" by Arthur Robinson et. al., John Wiley & Sons, 1995 (the "Bible"!). It is not cheap but it is the best. -- Alvesgaspar 09:25, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for this reference book I already ordered at half price through Amazon.
Meanwhile (it may take a long time to arrive), is there a difference, for vector data, between generalization and simplification of the paths ?
A question also about the VMap-0 data : when printing a sample of the Nile river delta at a 1:8,160,000 scale, there are numerous and highly detailed streams as well as populated places represented in a very small printed area. If in this case a generalization would be welcome (like it is done in an atlas), what is the interest of making available such a detailed data with a very poor accuracy ?
Don't you think also a discussion topic between the professional cartographers present in the different WPs should be opened in order to establish an accuracy standard for the whole project so everybody (specially mapmakers) could talk the same language regarding the scale of a map ?
Thanks. Sting 16:06, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 • The simplification (which may takes various forms) is just one of the generalizatiom processes, applying to all kinds of data models. There are special algorithms used in the simplification of vector lines, where the number of nodes is reduced in some systematic way (I can't remember the name of the algorithm but it is easy enough to program). I agree about the unnecessary detail in the Nile map. Now it is in your hands to select which information is to be represented and how. About the discussion between "professional cartographers", I fear that there are no such specimens in WP... Alvesgaspar 19:54, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

embedded bitmaps[edit]

I really thought you were not being truthful about not knowing how to do that -- make a bit map into an svg. I am still not convinced.... That being said, do you have any more like that? It was kind of fun. I am going to see for now if I can turn some of my plant photographs into svg with my new found understanding of that really old software. That step between first starting to use software (like GIMP or Inkscape) and having a little understanding for intelligent tweaking of the options for all of the different dialogs and stuff is a really big one! At least for me.

Then about format purity -- I think that given the option of a larger file vs embedded bit map, I would choose the larger file. Embedded bitmaps feel like cheating to me.

There is one more thing that I did to that file that I should "tell on myself" for. I removed the inkscape layer names which were thoughtfully assigned and left the id names which were chronologically assigned. Recently, the commons upload thingie changed for me. One of the changes is that when I upload an image into the existing namespace, the button has a huge warning on it that looks like html from 1996; the other thing is that I think it scans for the words 'sodipodi' and 'inkscape' and doesn't allow saving if it finds them. This kind of angers me as I already do this and I uploaded perhaps 50 images before there was one that had one of those words in it. But here is the point I wanted to make: I think it is more advantageous to change the id of the object with the xml editor than to do whatever inkscape does when it accepts a layer name (I still haven't found in the gui where that happens).

It is interesting with the xml editor open, everytime a node gets touched, inkscape assigns a 'sodipodi-nodetype' or something like this. Removing it doesn't change the image. So, in my anger, I wonder that if they can make an upload dialog find the words, how come they can't make inkscape clean up after itself?

And seriously, do you have other maps with embedded images? -- carol 13:23, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Gibraltar[edit]

Salut Eric!

I was wondering if you had some time to create a map showing the location of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar.

Here you can see an existing non-free map. Please let me know if you're up for it. Merci!

Pas problem! Is there anyone you'd recommend I ask to do this? Merci. --Gibmetal 77talk 23:41, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bien, merci. There's no rush really. I was just thinking of expanding the en:Rock of Gibraltar article in a couple of weeks time so I thought it would be good to have an image to show how much area is taken up by the nature reserve. A doubt[edit]

Hello, Sting. I'm Mao06 from Spanish wikipedia, I worked occasionally in commons, I do not know if you remember me, I translated to Spanish your map of the Falklands Islands..

I saw that on the map of gibraltar has used photographic sources of google earth, I have a doubt. Are they copyleft? I have the draft make a map illustrating several new trams, subways and streettrains routes in southern of Spain. Can I use photographs of google maps, for the vectorization? Do infringes any copyright? Thank you very much and congratulations on your work --Mao06(talk) 16:27 26 may 2008 (UTC)

Thank you so much, I thought like you, but I was not sure. That is why I have consulted you. I looking for free pictures where you indicate. Since going to revise the map of gibraltar, I think you should change the color of the Water Cathmen Area. Map standards[edit]

wrote in english to allow other to clearly see our talks

Hello Sting, I will have time to involve myself again on the Map standards creation. Yesterday, I improved the overview table (I still have some ideas). Today evening, I made some clean up to the page using the "Summarization" box.

I personnaly plan to focus my effort on some points only :

 1. continue to rethink the map division on wikimedia to improve the overview table ;
 2. continue the page clean up using the {Summarization} box (one more evening) ;
 3. make some proposal for colored area (translucent layers to show an area)
 4. create some tools (templates) ;

About the overview table, I added the German position maps to show what we can finally get, but I don't clearly understand what is the place of German maps, since thay don't use Orange.

I want also notice :

 • as predictable, Commons being a "satellite wiki", I think the page is not enough active, only some non-french have voice their opinions ;
 • most people seems to wait a fully finished ;
 • Pro-English seems support brighter colors and the Planemad style ; in opposition with German who adopted your new proposal's soft colors and skip the orange !

...this trouble or lack of participation ead me to think that we should take a stronger leadership.

To take a stronger leadership :

 1. we should more clearly state that your new global proposal is waiting comments and approval. We still can change some aspects. But silence will means approval.
 2. we should now expand your proposal quickly and by ourselves, I will quickly voice some proposals.
 3. we should make quickly arbitrary choices, we can't satisfy everyone [EN / DE&FR] in such so close proposals, we have to choice quickly to progress continously and keep everybody active.

PS: As I said before, I'm a little "out of the game", so please say me quickly if I misunderstood something. Yug (talk) 21:57, 20 July 2008 (UTC) Happy to be back to finish the work ![reply]

Hi. I'm not sure you understood well what I was trying to say: I'm starting to be really tired of all of this because of the low participation and think strongly to disconnect myself from these discussions here. After closing properly the case on WP-fr, I'll simply continue to make maps the way I like. It's as simple as that. Sting (talk) 16:09, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Salut Sting,

beg to differ[edit]

re: diff Location and locator maps to the average editor have no significant differences, so should be joined to the category scheme through those. Creating a whole separate nodal branch scheme for various classification of them is gonna be even messier. Subcatting them there still keeps them segregated as having the rectilinear scaling, and the template warns that there is a distinction.

Why do you feel the location map is so different the two can't share the hierarchy? Would simplify things greatly I would think. // FrankB 23:43, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keep your eye out here and so forth... in particular the section above. The thing that needs researched imho, is relative "numbers by country" before making further "decisions". The linked page you gave me surveyed all the projects... whose maps should end up here... so this is best thought through. // FrankB 14:38, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ping to here... to/for a minor disagreement. Also, didn't follow your comment up above (there) about "lightening" up the template, or some words to that effect. Was that a comment on the background colors? If so, I can't see much difference (at least on this laptop) so wonder why you'd bother. If other meaning, by all means, straighten me out! Cheers! // FrankB 02:55, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Location versus Locator maps[edit]

The Alaska and Ohio maps you recategorized are "Location maps" in the "Wiki" sense (see en:Template:Location map).

Even though the files are "incorrectly named" as Locator maps, they really are Wiki "Location maps" as defined by the WP GEO, i.e. they work with Template:Location map and a set of coordinates to produce a dot-on overlay.

"Locator maps" on the other hand are the "... dot-on-location ..." variety.

The Wiki map naming conventions are not very well thought out, but:

 • Location map = "blank" map which works with a template and coordinates to produce a overlay
 • Locator map = map either not appropriately aligned/projected for use with coordinates, or already having a static "dot-on"

I work mostly with the Alaska map and verified that Location map WGS84/NAD83 (a.k.a. Google/GPS) coordinates plot properly, and I also verified the same for the Ohio map. There are a bunch of other similar maps, which I have not verified, so I did not move the others in to the appropriate category. when I use a map - I verify its border/boundary coordinates and then place it in the appropriate category if it is miscategorized, so I will do so with the others as I go through them (on en:Wikipedia, see the Talk pages for the Alaska and Ohio map for the specifics). Crau & autoroutes[edit]

Hektor (talk) 12:30, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An issue about fonts in SVG maps[edit]

Hello Sting,

I have noticed that "Arial" and "Times New Roman" fonts are not being rendering properly any more in SVG maps. In order to see the difference, try to preview one of them in a page in a different scale (e.g. type . Since I wanted to preserve the original style in the greek language version of your Isle of Man topographic map (Image:Isle of Man topographic map-el.svg) I had to convert fonts to paths. Is there an issue with these fonts in metawiki or somewhere else in Wikipedia projects? Do you have any idea where to report it to?

I would also like to thank you for the very detailed guide for creating maps. Following your instructions, I m going to upload soon an SVG topographic map of Jamaica and another of Malta. It would be perfect if you found some time to write the missing section "Didacticiel pour la bathymétrie d'une carte topographique" in the "Didacticiel de création de carte topographique vectorielle" chapter and add a section about importing administration borders lines into maps.

Salut Sting,

Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 17:58, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Aegean Sea map bathymetry-fr.svg[edit]

Have you got any idea what's going on with your fine File:Aegean Sea map bathymetry-fr.svg? The embedded bitmap is not displaying. It is rendering on the old thumbnails, like on your user page, and it used to be displaying on the image page itself, but not when you included it elsewhere. I tried to force a refresh by re-uploading it, but it only had the effect of switching off the display on the main image page too :-(.

Seems to be another problem with Mediawiki's SVG renderer. Maybe the bitmap is too large? Should we try uploading a reduced one?

Question[edit]

Hi!

I noticed your fantastic topographic maps you made for Wikipedia and decided to study your tutorials at w:fr:Wikipédia:Atelier graphique/Didacticiels cartographiques/Didacticiels pour la cartographie numérique géoréférencée. I managed to produce my first map according to your instructions about two weeks ago: [3].

I have one question. How can I use the VMap-0 database that you mentioned in the Ressources cartographiques géoréférencées section? I tried to import the VMap .shp files into GRASS the same way I did with the SWBD files, but it doesn't work. I can only view them in the limited version of Global Mapper. Is there any way to avoid the lengthy process of manually drawing the roads and rivers using the captures from DEMIS Mapper or the Add-on for World Wind?

Thanks for writing those wonderful tutorials and for raising the standards of Wikipedia cartography!

Cheers,

Andrei

Yes, great map. Many thanks Fut.Perf. for this very helpful link!! Sting (talk) 20:51, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the advices regarding the shaded relief. I know that the method I tried on the Slovenia map is not the same with the one you described in the tutorials, but I didn't know how to use GIMP at that time. I made some experiments with it since then and I think I can handle it now. You know, it took one year and a half to master Inkscape the way I do now.

I've asked Future Perfect for more advice about GRASS and VMAP0 because I don't really know what to do with the programming language found in the above-given link.

Oh. I have one more question. I thought about buying a full licence for Global Mapper. I don't know much about cartographic software, but I was impresed with the features of Global Mapper. Do you know if there is anything better than GM with a more or less simillar price?

Au revoir,

Andrei

Featuration de pictures[edit]

Salut Sting,

Maps[edit]

Hi! Thanks for the great mapmaking tutorials. Could you please take a look at these maps and spot any problems? I know, sometimes the legend doesn't fit into the legend box, I think this is due to font rendering problems, but I am reluctant to use DejaVu Sans because in small thumbnail view it is displayed as dirty blots.

By the way, I was going to make a series of climate maps on the global scale (Mollweide projection), but my Inkscape cannot handle such amount of vector data. Is there a small scale vector boundaries dataset somewhere? WDBII is too large, a resolution of about 10' would be great. PZmaps (talk) 14:52, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Northern Ireland.png[edit]

Check out my lastest map: General map of Northern Ireland. I've uploaded only a PNG file because I'm very disapponted with MediaWiki's support for SVG files. Let's hope they'll fix their bugs soon. But I remember that until about August 2008 there were no problems with SVG text fonts, so I'm quite pessimistic about this.

Thanks a lot for your help,

Andrei

If I may suggest, don't use windroses and arrows if there is a coordinate grid (i.e. almost never use them), they are redundant. PZmaps (talk) 09:57, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And I am not sure that italicizing town names is a good idea. Normally only natural objects are italicized. Island names, on the other hand, would certainly look much better italicized. By the way, an anchor would be a much better symbol of a port, I think. PZmaps (talk) 16:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. I'll get an anchor from one of your maps of Albania. And I think I'll also change the the village, mountain and island names when I'll have some spare time. Thanks!

P.S. You could also use a white-filled circle (with a small black dot in the middle as now) for the county/district/periphery capitals on the Albania map.

Geo-referencer[edit]

Salut Sting. Do you know if there is any free geo-referencer or .map to .shp converter available? I found a very good map resource, a collection of Soviet high-scale military topographic maps from the 1980s: http://maps.poehali.org/en/. The georeferenced map files are in the .map format and I can't import them into GRASS GIS. Because of their large size, it's also way too difficult trying to reassemble screenshots from dlgv32 Pro. Is there any way I could reproject these maps?

Best wishes,

Andrei

Soviet military maps as data source[edit]

Do you happen to know what are the legal implications of using data from those Soviet maps? Are they free enough for use by Commons? Do their fall under Template:PD-RU-exempt (Romanian maps produced under similar conditions - army department in a socialist country - are considered by that department to be under its copyright). The fact that they are freely available online doesn't necessarily they're Commons-free (compare with Google Maps, and add that the site hosting those maps doesn't have any relation with the producer of those maps). I'm asking because I want to create a map using the tutorials you wrote, and the vectorization of some of the elements from these maps would be much easier than tracing the same elements on free Landsat imagery. I've seen you had to delete some maps (which probably took you quite a time to make) because the copyright incompatibility, and I wouldn't want to be in the same situation: better create them slower than make them unusable on Commons. You (along other members of the French graphic team) are on of the pioneers of this type of maps that kinda give Wikipedia a corporate identity, so I thought I should ask you first. If you think I should address this issue somewhere else, please inform me.Baltaci (talk) 22:57, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alsace[edit]

Hi Sting, did You plan next time a map about the Alsace like Your other departement-maps? That would be very usefull for a map in our Kartenwerkstatt about church-styles in the Alsace. If not, I will create a background by myself. But it would be double-work. Greetings Lencer (talk) 07:44, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

.map files[edit]

Hi Stig.

Well, I tried to upload the map files the same way I did with the Geo tiff ones (File>Import raster map). Maybe I'm not doing the right thing. I'll better take your advice and ask on the GRASS forum.

I know that I could very easily convert the .map files with a full version of Global Mapper, but I want to find a 'payment free' way of using the Soviet maps. My plan is to use both the openstreetmap.org data and the Soviet military maps to create a GIS database for Commons. I want to create sepparate files for rivers, lakes, forests, railways, expressways, major roads, secondary roads, the shape of settlements, summits etc for each country or region. Now the next step would be to find a way to geo-reference the resulting .svg files.

And thank you for your appreciation. I'm really pleased I managed to improve my technique so much in the recent weeks.

All the best

Sorry, my computer crashed so I didn't keep an uncompressed version. Normally I just keep the photo open in Photoshop so I can resave with less compression. I can't understand why the photo's author doesn't see what we're getting at. My version shows the incredible color of the foreground water, for instance, which is completely invisible in the original. By the way, I've _been_ on a photo safari to the Milford Sound (with a 4x5 view camera, no less), but I'm unencumbered by the idea that the camera captures anything close to what the eye sees. • Thanks for your efforts on the colour balance - the edited versions do look obviously better. It's just after being used to the "blue" version, the new edits looked almost black and white and took a little getting used to. However, I like them now! Location map ratio[edit]

Hello! You produce the location maps more professional than me, I'm sure. :-) I just take an equirectangular map and transform it vertically in a simple graphic program (no GIS at all) so that the country's shape looks like we are used to it. The ratio of latitude and longitude in the map on the left is 1:1, on the left 1,5:1, that's 150 % stretching. In most cases I used 10 % steps (110 %, 120 %, 130 %...) for different countries while your method will use the best ratio for each country. That way we will get different sizes for the map. I chose the 10 % steps so it would be easier for "hobby cartographers" at WP to copy/past data from one map to another although this leads to slightly less accurate maps like in your method. As most location maps are used as thumbs I thought the difference between best and easy-to-handle ratio could be neglected.

I would suggest you make Italy the way you did it with all other maps, then I bring the political version to the same size. It's just a click in Inkscape. Afterwards I correct the ratio in the file description. The ratio won't be a simple-to-use number like 130 % for Italy but that's okay for me. Except for the French WP the file size has to be corrected in the template only at oc: and ar: with only few location maps, no problem for me. All other languages use the English template version without this item, so nothing has to be corrected.

Btw some Middle European maps haven't got the best ratio. This is because of the infoboxes they are used in. It has been impossible to show e.g. Germany the way it really looks, it's longer from north to south as shown above but this would have destroyed the layout of all municipality boxes. There has been a discussion about it, in the end most users preferred a "thicker" Germany and no changes to the infobox, unfortunately, so I agreed to this solution. Sometimes mapmaking is more a political decision than a geographically correct one. :-) Regards, --NNW (talk) 08:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can upload the updated maps, then you will have less work. Making the physical maps is much more work than the political ones, so it's fairer this way, I think. :-) There are also some older maps (like Ghana or Paraguay) which I have to create larger and in the way they are made now, e.g. with more rivers.
Usually I start with the VMAP data of the internal boundaries, then I collect all maps I can find in the internet and in my atlases and update/correct it. In the end it often is a mixture of several maps of which I think they are the most uptodate and correct ones, a job for a hunter-gatherer. Sometimes a user from that country gives me a hint about changes. --NNW (talk) 08:41, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Italy is now longer. --NNW (talk) 12:39, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bouches du Rhône[edit]

Bonjour,

Robert Valette (talk) 08:22, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Fonds de cartes grecs[edit]

Salut Sting,

Encore merci. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 14:02, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! When I open this file in Illustrator the scale of 200 miles is about 70 mm long (in Inkscape btw 55,9 mm). So 1 cm would be ~ 28,57 miles or 45,98 km. That means the scale would be 1:4.598.000. Or even 1:5.757.000 in Inkscape. 1:2.000.000 is definitely impossible if you compare the distance between the Canadian coast and the border of the ZEE that should be 370 km. Hello, Sting!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

From my own experience, if I don't convert the text into path, the text will appear deformed in the browser and also any multiple blank (spaces) between letters or words will dissapear, compressing the text or word (ex: "L a n d o f J o h n" will be displayed as "L a n d o f J o h n"). I have not yet managed to find a solution other than converting the text into path, if you happen to be more familiar with InkScape, please, by all means, lend a hand.Asybaris01 (talk) 16:26, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Modifying Scotland map for Blurb Book[edit]

Hello,

I modified your Scotland map for a Blurb Book I am making of my family's vacation. I erased several textual details to make the map simpler for my purpose. I added certain Scotish cities that my family visited. I added a colored transparent highlight of roads we took. Im crediting you, Eric Gaba as the author. Will be including the distribution license as you did.

I'd like to use your Socrates photo in a book I'm writing, coming out next year. Can you email me at alec [at] mcnayr.com to work out the details? My publisher is requiring me to get direct permission from you. Thank you!!! - alec

Thanks for uploading File:W_C_Fields05.gif. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:W_C_Fields05.gif) and the above demanded information in your request.
