re: Revizionist and FftE

I was pretty sure there was some backstory here... and ever since that ROMacedonia MfD and delinking lots of templates, those 2 keep popping up on my watchlist. Revizionist states that he will get written statements of permission for the images and send it in to OTRS, so I guess I'll wait and see if that happens. ~ Riana 16:31, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Greece_linguistic_minorities.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Author information

I'm uploading some icons from a monastery in Macedonia, and I'm wondering, what about author information? Do I have to provide that info for icons made by monks? I see some media uploaded here have original author information (e.g. painter), and other have uploader information (i.e. user). Which one is right and what should I do in this case? Thanks. --INkubusse 14:54, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RfA

I hope our comments at your RfA are not to discouraging - we are very happy to have new people volunteering to help but this request was probably a bit premature. As I see it the reason this RfA (most likely) will not pass is that you haven't made enough contributions here for us to really know you. So please keep up the good work and contribute here, and the chance of a successfull RfA will be much better after a couple of months of activity. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 22:27, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, I'm not in need of "success" here. If you guys want my services, say so, if you can do without them, your choice :-) (But I must say, the guy who thinks I need to "work on my communication skills" gets me somewhat pissed. Commons must be a rich project indeed if it can afford biting people away with that haughty attitude.) Fut.Perf. 22:33, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, one of the challenges at Commons is that allthough English is the lingua franca many of us are not native English speakers - and some comments could be worded haughtier than what was actually intended. The reason I posted here was excactly to say that we DO need your services, but that you will have to contribute some more without the sysop.buttons before this community could trust you to be an admin here. Myself I've got some 700 edits at en:wiki, but wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in (you know where) if I requested adminship. And that's as it should be, I really don't know the various guidelines and stuff at en:wiki the way an admin should. The requirements for experience and participation at Commons is far lower than at en:wiki, and the rules and guidelines far simpler - but your still not "there yet" (in my opinion). Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 22:45, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The wording needs changing for sure so we should get that done. It's strange really because I've looked here a couple of times recently thinking about suggesting a nomination for you :) I came to the conclusion it was a little early for now. However the work you are doing here is great & we could do with the sort of experienced help that you bring to this. Stick with it for a bit will you & I would happily support/nominate fairly soon. In practice I would not have oppose you I think but you were right (IMO) to pull it. If I can help feel free to let me know - cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:16, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, it's appreciated. No problem about the RfA really. I'll just continue doing stuff here and there and wait and see. Whenever you feel I'd be more useful having the bit, just let me know, I'll be here. :-) Fut.Perf. 11:52, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do believe you'd be (even more) useful having the bit, and would be happy to nominate if you're "still there". Being one of the first opposers to your previous RfA probably wasn't my proudest moment at Commons... Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 13:33, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I saw your RfA after you'd withdrawn it; too bad. I looked over — albeit, briefly — what you've been doing and would have had no problem supporting. Best wishes for your next go.

FYI, I'm mostly on id:wp and jv:wp. My reception has been great; Indonesians are at heart a friendly people. How are things at the fan-pedia? I've not been paying very close attention. Cheers, Jack Merridew 12:18, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Great catch! Please keep the good work up! I see you're also working on deletion requests, that's also a good thing. If you keep it up, maybe a nomination of you would be appropriate in future? First thing you can do now is soon to apply for flickr reviewing and upload flickr images and remember be active here. Around 2 months should be enough, but in that time be sure to tag images copyvios if they are, that shows that you've got knowledge on how to use the deletion button. --Kanonkas(talk) 18:28, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for the thumbs-up. If you're referring to that stab at adminship the other day, don't worry, I'm in no hurry, it's not like my happiness in life depends on being an admin here. I have more than enough admin stuff on en-wiki as is. :-) I think I'll just plod along and do things here and there as they come up and as time allows. Give me a shout any time if you need a Greek speaker for some business like this. I guess I'll mainly continue doing these occasional copyvio investigations, they were mainly what brought me here. I'll think about the Flickr thing too though. Fut.Perf. 18:44, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images of Liancourt Rocks

Hello, Future Perfect at Sunrise! About Liancourt Rocks(Dokdo/Takeshima/Tokto), I got answer from User:Kudo-gun. Cyprus SVG

Good job translating my line image into an SVG, but one error (I think) - the thin line linking the two parts of Dhekelia is actually part of the base, and not part of the UN line; Dhekhelia is a single unit, and not two exclaves. It's barely visible on Image:CIA-Dhekelia.png, where there's a line separating the east part of the tiny part from the UN line, but there's no separation between it and the inner line connecting with the rest of the base. It looks a little gray only because it's so thin here. --Golbez (talk) 14:26, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seems you're right, thanks for the notice. What a messy geography. Corrected now. Fut.Perf. 14:43, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: I'm envious ....

Hello and thanks for your kind comments about my work.
I´m travelling this end of year and will be back only in January, so I will for now only be able to give you a fast answer. I started to write tutorials (only in French for now) about map creation. The page about the principal sources and software used is here (more detailed list of available sofware here).
At first glance these pages will afraid you because they are very long and seem to be very complicated, but they aren´t and their length is only due to the fact that I detailled a lot the steps to ease the understanding.
I hope you will be able to understand everything in French. If you have problems or questions I´ll be glad to help you more, just let me know in January.
Happy New Year. --Sting (talk) 12:42, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fut.Perf. and many thanks for that barnstar.
I'm very glad to see that you had the courage to read the tutorials which I know, are far to be concise. Congrats for this nice first map!
May I give you some advise about the shaded relief layer for which I think you missed some points? In the SRTM data there's no information about the underwater relief, so this part can be discarded: keep the shading over the land and delete from it all the sea areas. I think also this layer makes the map a bit too pale in your map. It seems you applied a semi-transparent effect for the shading which makes look the colors of the elevations washed out and I think a better rendering can be achieved by keeping only the shadows. This can be made by first deleting the gray color of the flat areas (in The Gimp, select the gray of the sea or a flat area in land, then 'Color' -> 'Color to alpha' – with the shaded relief layer active – ) and then the white of the illuminated side of the relief (save the image in PNG format).
The secondary and positive consequence of both actions is that your shaded relief image will be much lighter, usually several hundreds of Ko, and so your final map.
Greetings! Sting (talk) 22:30, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Fut. Perf.
Congratulations for your nice map, well done!
For now I only made the blank versions of the Peloponnese but I will create a topographic map with as much rivers names and relief features as I can (I already started to settle the data in French). The point is that I don't know when I will finish it and put it on line...
Greetings. Sting (talk) 19:37, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
I tried many times making work this file uploading many modified versions in my working file in WP-fr... no way! So I gave up and uploaded a raster version to have peace...
MediaWiki is really boring: you must always be ready to have problems with SVG images (I mean later...). A mess. Everything run fine for months with this map until a few weeks ago. I don't even try to understand anymore, maybe the very large dimensions? I see the Finnish version has problems too now: for me the thumbnail is still displayed but no more the background map in the description page.
Just trying to keep cool...
Greetings. Sting (talk) 20:01, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maps

Hi! You seem to know much about copyright. Could you please explain if there is a way to use this database as a source for maps here or at least on other Wikipedia projects? They say that "[t]his dataset is freely available for academic and other non-commercial use. Redistribution or commercial use is not allowed without prior permission", but I am a bit confused. Does the latter clause apply to maps partially derived from the dataset (which is in turn derived from other databases) or only to the dataset itself? PZmaps (talk) 23:03, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, good question. difficult to say. Perhaps it would be safer to just ask them? I wouldn't expect they'd be opposed to our uses here. Perhaps just send them a sample of what you want to create and ask if they have a problem if you release that under cc-?
Would be a great new resource if we could use it, of course. Just imagine we could raise climate cartography to the same quality level as topography. If you can get a permission from them, you'd really be doing the project a great service. Fut.Perf. 06:52, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

my pics

i wrote to turelio two times the last weeks, but i did not get an answer.. since there are doubts whether the pictures are self-made or not could you delete them? i will upload the true camera versions then.. Wikcom (talk) 10:16, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't delete anything here, I'm not an admin on commons. We'll need to wait till they close the IfD's; until then, the tags should stay. Fut.Perf. 10:18, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Stolen" photo

That photo was posted quite a long time ago, I can't really recall the places because I post a lot of photos. Mostly forums probably... Anyway I didn't accuse anyone and I don't consider it stolen because I always give permission for the photos to be used freely. I don't want it removed from wikipedia, I'm glad it is here. The only thing that bothered me was the incorrect description. Now that it has been fixed all is fine. I don't feel the need for my name to be on it, it can stay like this. Somebody bothered to upload it and to serve a purpose however small that purpose is... that's the important part. It's wikipedia after all :) BuildMk (talk) 23:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maps

Hi Future Perfect. I'm glad that you and Sting appreciate my map of Slovenia. I mostly do battle maps, historical or administrative maps, but I thought about giving a try with topographic maps. I now think that even a historical map would look better with the topography included.

Thank you for the VMAP0 method link. Unfortunately I don't know anything about programming language and I never used PERL. It's quite difficult to make something of the instructions given in the article ([1]). Which of the two methods should I use in the case of VMAP0? Can you please write me a more detailed step-by-step short guide about this. I would very much appreciate it!

Best wishes,

Andrei

User:Andrein (talk) 04:16, 05 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andrei. Basically, the method you need is the one described on page 6 of the document I linked to, in the left column. The code shown in the example is supposed to be shell commands, i.e. commands that you type either into the GRASS console (the "gis.m" window), or into the system console window (on MS-Windows, the so-called "DOS box") while GRASS is running. But it's the same thing you can also do by calling up the "v.in.ogr" import command from the GRASS graphical interface menu. It's less complex than it looks, you can actually reduce it to a single command, it just takes a rather long command string then.
Example: let's suppose you are on Windows, you have your VMAP0 data in a directory called "C:\VMAP0", and inside that directory you have a subdirectory tree containing "v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia" (for the European data).
gltp:/vrf/C:/VMAP0/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia

That's the string you enter in the "OGR datasource name" field in the graphical interface, or you insert it as

dns="gltp:/vrf/C:/VMAP0/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia"

if you're typing out the full GRASS command by hand.

In the "OGR layer name" field (or "layer=..." in the command string), suppose you want the political boundary layer, which is called "polbndl", which is part of the "bnd" (boundaries) set and of the "line" type. Then you need to type out a source string like this:

polbndl@bnd(*)_line

Other layer codes:

boundaries (points) polbndp@bnd(*)_
coastlines coastl@bnd(*)_line
bathymetry depthl@bnd(*)_line
elevation contours contourl@elev(*)_line
rivers watrcrsl@hydro(*)_line
lakes inwatera@hydro(*)_area
settlements builtupa@pop(*)_area
roads roadl@trans(*)_line
railways railrdl@trans(*)_line

You should also use the "import subregion only" parameter (otherwise it will import all data from the whole of Eurasia.)

For some layers, it is useful to use the "WHERE" parameter too. For instance, if you query "roads", you can add either

rtt=14

or:

rtt=15

14 means primary roads, 15 means secondary roads. For contour lines, you can say:

zv2=1000

to get only the contours at the 1000m level, and so on. A full list of what layer names and WHERE parameters are available exists somewhere in a document called "VMap0 Coverages" (you need to google for it, I have it stored on my computer but don't remember the url.)

So, the final command string with all parameters might end up something like:

v.in.ogr -z --overwrite where='rtt=15' spatial=27,42,30,45 dsn='gltp:/vrf/C:/VMAP0/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia' layer='roadl@trans(*)_line' output='mymap_sec_roads'

Like with SRTM and SWBD import, you need to run this command while you are in a LatLon location in GRASS. Afterwards you transfer it from the LatLon to your projection just like you would with an SWBD vector map.

If you want to use the perl script I have, you just need to install Perl on your system, copy two files (which I'd send you) into your Grass directory, create a LatLon Location with the correct VMAP parameters once (you can reuse it for every later project), and then you can just say, in the system command console, directly while having GRASS open in your target Location:

perl ..\scripts\get.vmap0

And on being prompted for input, you just name the data layer, and the script does all the rest.

Hope this helps? Fut.Perf. 08:07, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just tried this command in the lon/lat nad83 projection using the "v.in.ogr" import command:
v.in.ogr -z dsn=gltp:/vrf/C:/eurnasia/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia output=vmap0_bndl layer=polbndl@bnd(*)_line spatial=27,42,30,45

and got this reply: Unable to open data source <gltp:/vrf/C:/eurnasia/v0eur_5/vmaplv0/eurnasia>

What am I missing?

User:Andrein (talk) 18:10, 05 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, not sure. I suppose you have double-checked that the path to your VMAP files is correct? (I might not understand all issues here, because I run this on Linux on my machine and I gather you are on Windows; there might be some issues about how to code the parameters in the command string. Maybe play around a bit with where to put quotes around the parameters, or use the Windows-typical "\" characters in the path instead of the forward slashes? Sorry I can't be of more help right now. Fut.Perf. 22:38, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I solved the problem! I found a website where the VMAP-0 files are in shape format: http://gis-lab.info/qa/vmap0-eng.html

So I imported them just as the SWBD files.

User:Andrein (talk) 08:15, 06 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have one more question. How do you get the N,S,W,E coordinates for a Lambert Conformal Conic or an Orthographic projection in GRASS? With the Slovenia map I reprojected the 3DEM SRTM map in dlgv32 Pro and then wrote down the X and Y figures from the View>Properties window. Is there any other way to do this?

User:Andrein (talk) 09:11, 06 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yep: "g.region -l". Great to hear the data import is working for you now. Fut.Perf. 11:11, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, unfortunately VMAP0 doesn't seem very useful to me. The boundaries layer is copyrighted, the railways and roads are terribly out of date and the position of rivers is not precise enough for maps based on SRTM3 and is sometimes plainly wrong, so ultimately there is no other choice but to track them manually on Landsat imagery and hydrological models created with GRASS GIS (the latter is very helpful in the case of mountainous regions). That was the most difficult part of the work. PZmaps (talk) 10:55, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you. It took me about 4 hours just to fix the rivers on my latest map ([2]). I had to adjust almost every one of them manually. That was horrible. And yes you're right, the roads and railways are out of date. I take it they are as of 1998-1999. Could we somehow create our own Wiki GIS database using reliable maps and GoogleEarth. It's very easy to spot the rivers, roads etc. in GoogleEarth (or GoogleMaps), so maybe there's a way to use it.
User:Andrein (talk) 18:07, 07 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As to Albania and Macedonia, in VMAP-0 the railway and road network is as of the 1960s at best. GoogleEarth is unfortunately copyrighted, but on the plain most roads and rivers are visible on Landsat imagery, which is free, and in the mountains the streams can be predicted if you play with [Raster>Terrain analysis>Slope] and [Raster>Hydrologic modeling>Topographic index map] in GRASS. However, I am not sure that such precision is needed for historical maps. Many rivers change their course over time. PZmaps (talk) 20:11, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, I found the rivers and roads info for Greece very faulty too. I'm not aware of those problems with the copyright status of the boundaries though, could you point me to some info?
Creating our own database sounds like an interesting task. Is there some software that could take an SVG and the corresponding projection information and calculate the vectors back into some GIS-compatible format? Fut.Perf. 17:16, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Not a big deal, I think, but here are the license terms: [3]. Free boundaries are available from NGDC, but be careful, they may be outdated (I seem to remember that they make use of the pre-WWII Estonian and Latvian borders). PZmaps (talk) 19:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maps

Thanks you very much for your response Future!
I dont know why, but I prefers the maps like this or this other, ¿so they are made by Inkscape?, and there is a tutorial at the French wikipedia wich teachs how to make maps like those?
thanks you very much again!
and have a nice day...=)--Mel Parlez 19:14, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PD:And do you know where can I find blank maps of the Eearly Modern Time and Latter Modern Times in Europe, I have seen ones wich were of all the world, but when I did zoom It was confused..=p

I have made you three questions, it 's a lot , sorry =)

Those files that are in .png format could have been made in any image editor, I don't know, but there are important advantages in doing them in SVG and with Inkscape. It's fairly similar to work with. As for blank maps, if you just want to create an historical political boundaries map like the Austrian Empire one, you could first look at Category:SVG maps of Europe, such as File:Blank map europe no borders.svg. I'm not sure we have blank maps with old political boundaries already drawn in, so you'd have to find and draw the boundaries by hand, probably. If you need a specific geographical region with coastlines that you can't find a good blank template for, I could probably make you one. Fut.Perf. 20:23, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm, those maps were .svg at the english Wikipedia, but when I imported them to Commons I put .png format because because I don¿t know how to use the Inkscape very well, if they are vectorial graphics so they have been created with Inkscape?
Can I learn to make maps like those in the tutorial wich you recommmended me?
thanks for everything, and excuseme my english!

File:Northern Ireland.png

Check out my lastest map: General map of Northern Ireland. Do you think the mountains look too high?; the maximum altitude in Northern Ireland is 852.

And why can't I choose a central meridian like 6.50N in GRASS?

Thanks a lot for your patience in helping me with the VMAP0.

Wow, looks great. But you may be right, the mountain shading might do with a little less shade, to make it even more appealing. – 6.50N is probably a typo, right? Should be 6.50W. If that doesn't work, have you tried entering it as a degrees-minutes-seconds value (06:30:00W) rather than decimal? By the way, check out http://www.openstreetmap.org for free roads data, since we were talking about that the other day. Apparently it's possible to export their data into either SVG directly, or Shapefile format. Fut.Perf. 00:02, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I meant 6.50 W. Yes it works if I introduce degrees-minutes-seconds values. Now I'm angry I can't change the map projection parameters anymore for the Northern Ireland map.

Thanks.

Wow! The openstreetmap.org website is great. Amazing. How have they gathered so much information? Have they used satellite images? Yes I see you can export their data in SVG format, but there's no option for Shapefile. I can't wait to make some city maps!

Andrein User talk:Andrein 00:25, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, their main idea is that you work on the ground, by collecting GPS data from locations you actually go to. But they also have satellite images that you can use to trace things. As for exporting, this help page mentions at least one download format that is compatible with OGR (which is the import library used in GRASS). But I haven't yet looked at the details on how to do it. Fut.Perf. 06:59, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The mountains look just ok with me. However, don't use windroses and arrows if there is a coordinate grid, it is redundant and looks unprofessional. The Openstreetmap looks great indeed, seems to be fairly accurate, thanks, but I have not yet tried to use it. And they have up-to-date state boundaries, where do they take them from? PZmaps (talk) 09:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any free PNG or SVG to SHP converter available? That would make life much more easier if we want to use openstreetmap or satellite images in GRASS.
Andrein User talk:Andrein 00:25, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Try this. PZmaps (talk) 18:37, 16 March 2009 (UTC) Or this. Can you imagine how I feel now? I traced this manually. PZmaps (talk) 19:07, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you PZmaps!

I also found a very good map resource. A Soviet military map collection (map scales range from 1:50.000 to 1:1.000.000) covering most of Europe and large parts of Asia can be found here: http://maps.poehali.org/en/. You can also download geo-referenced files for these maps. However GRASS can't open .map file formats.

Hi Fut.Perf.! Have you ever used Quantum GIS? It appears that it has a geo-referencing plug-in and the program itself is free. Just what I needed for using old raster maps to create elaborated historical maps! There are many other features, but I haven't read the manual yet, so I can't tell you more about it for the moment.

Hello :) Why did You remove category Ohrid from this photo (see history)? Regards, Michał Sulik (talk) 08:25, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because it's redundant. The whole Category:Jovan Kaneo is part of Category:Buildings in Ohrid, which, obviously, is in turn part of Category:Ohrid. We don't normally include both parent and daughter categories on the same page, only the most specific one. Fut.Perf. 12:31, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain?

Hi! I wonder whether the historical maps from this collection can be used here. Unless I am missing something, I think they should have become public domain long ago. However, there is a spurious copyright notice: (c) The Hebrew University of Jerusalem & The Jewish National & University Library, and more than just that: You are expected, however, to accredit the site and not to print or sell any material thereof. I would feel uncomfortable disregarding this. PZmaps (talk) 23:11, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, those maps, at least all those that were published in print around the time of their creation, are all safely in the public domain, and mere mechanical reproductions of them do not attract new copyright according to US law (see Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag). There are certain challenges to the extent of this rule in some countries (see Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs and the recent legal complaints of the British National Portrait Gallery), but the Wikimedia Foundation explicitly encourages its projects to rely on the US definitions even for those countries; moreover, as far as I know, a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a paper document (as opposed to a carefully lit photograph of a painting from a distance, which requires more technical effort) would be far less likely to be considered copyrightable even in countries like the UK. Hello my old friend! Because I am not sure about one thing, so I want to ask you if this picture is free to use on Commons or it has copyrights? As I can see, the copyright holder is the author which can be found here or the photographer in the 80's. --R ašo 22:05, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greek maps

Hi,

That's a great work. It should be perfect for modern maps (with rivers :), but my query to Sting was really particular since I want a true Ancient Greek map (e.g. with corrections from Barrington Atlas). I'll tell him about your maps, he should be interested.

Many thanks. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 10:15, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, aren't you supposed to notify the uploader when you put up their pic for deletion? You seem to have forgotten to do that. Second, you seem to fail to understand that I own the picture AND I own lamakungfu.org, thus I can put the picture up there AND put it on wiki. What is most aggravating is the fact that we've been through this THREE TIMES. Each time some over zealous person tries to delete the picture, we show it is fine, and then we start all over again! Please stop, I can put my own picture up 173.52.174.71 13:44, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I notified you through my closure note on the en-wiki IFD, which you obviously saw, as I expected you would. If you are the owner of that web site, you will need to provide proof of it, those are the rules. Please either put up a license notice on the website itself, or contact the wikimedia e-mail system (see deletion tag for the address) from that web-site's mail address to identify yourself. And sorry, no, I didn't see where you "have been through this three times". If some administrators previously checked this and were satisfied with the result, you apparently failed to provide a clear link to those discussions. Fut.Perf. 15:06, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fyi, I've removed the speedy deletion template per policy: "If anyone disagrees with the speedy deletion of a particular file, please convert to a regular deletion request (see below)." I don't agree or disagree with speedy deletion, but it appears that the ip above does.--Rockfang (talk) 05:35, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And once I was done, I realised that the template you put there is technically not a speedy deletion template. I apologise for my mistake. I've reverted myself.--Rockfang (talk) 05:45, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Issue.

This map is not Ceha's map at all. [4] It is clearly very problematic. I have sourced how the image is very faulty. On top of that it is not used anywhere on wikipedia, and it has nothing to do with ceha. Cheers. (LAz17 (talk) 06:49, 15 December 2009 (UTC)).[reply]

On top of that you guys ignored what i stated in the deletion request. I clearly demonstrated how this map is wrong. Very civilized, I stated the clear errors. It clearly is not ceha's map, on top of everything. (LAz17 (talk) 06:53, 15 December 2009 (UTC)).[reply]
And what about this? It has nothing to do with ceha's map. I have demonstrated that it is wrong. I can clearly demonstrate the many countless errors in it if you want. For it to be worse than ceha's original map is really remarkable. So? (LAz17 (talk) 05:34, 17 December 2009 (UTC)).[reply]

hrvatska map

I finished this map, as promised earlier. [5] I did it before actually, but one of the users had a problem because I did not include enough islands. Hopefully it could replace the current poor map on the banovina hrvatska page. This one is better because it is first clearer and second it shows towns which are key. It might not be the most outstanding map, but it is like the maps by user Panonian. It's decent. (LAz17 (talk) 06:55, 15 December 2009 (UTC)).[reply]

Thanks for this, looks like a good job. I'll post a note over at the en-wiki page notifying people of this new map; editors at en-wiki can then include it in the article. Fut.Perf. 18:28, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Magna Graecia ancient colonies and dialects.svg

Hi,
This map is great, but could you maybe add a date for this situation? Richardprins (talk) 21:00, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid the source I used is rather unspecific about this; it in fact only says "1st millenium BC". My understanding is that most colonies were established between the 8th and the 6th century BC, and that the dialectal and cultural affinities of each place, once colonized, would be relatively stable afterwards. I don't know enough about the details of the colonization history to be able to tell from the inclusion or exclusion of any particular coloured speck on that map whether one particular time point within this whole period rather than another was intended. Obviously, the boundaries between the coloured areas and the adjacent non-coloured areas of Italy are intended to be approximate and shouldn't be interpreted as precisely meaningful. The selection of poleis shown and named is my own (the source map only contained anonymous coloured areas), and it's not particularly systematic – I was collecting them from various lists and maps I could find, including Wikipedia lists and categories, and more or less included anything that sounded somehow notable, but without any claim to exhaustiveness. Fut.Perf. 21:53, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please notify the original uploader. How do we know this is a copyright violation, both the Wiki account and the picasa acccount belong to "kart777". I'm always on the lookout for copyright violations but with no evidence we can't request deletion. Hekerui 08:18, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, this is getting more complicated than I saw at first. Sorry I didn't immediately notice the name on the picasa album was the same as the uploader. However, the picasa album only contains three images, one of which is clearly a non-free movie poster, so any copyright claim on that album is dubious in itself. The uploader is known for at least one further copyvio on en-wiki (en:File:Sim arasan.JPG), and I find en:File:Capture 2.JPG highly suspicious too. All three images have the typical red-flag features: web resolution, no exif data, and no explanation when and how they were taken; the two others are clearly posed portrait shots. Fut.Perf. 11:04, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I remember having searched the internet for evidence and later uploading a free image of Rajinikanth to replace this one. All the best Hekerui 08:40, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Linguistic map

Hello mate i created a Linguistic map of Greece based in your idea. I create a super clear map from the scratch with additional research. If you find it correct, you can update yours with this one, or if not, i know you did a related research too, please let me know for any corrections you think of. I take ideas and sources to construct something relaible. File:Greece_linguistic_minorities_.png Cheers! --Meliniki

That is a bit of a euphemistic description of what you did with your Greece map. In fact, what you did there was simply to twist the naming choices and falsify part of the data to suit your POV whims. Your Macedonia map isn't much better, I'm afraid. Fut.Perf. 12:53, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Future. Can you re-edit the linguistic map of Greece that was uploaded by this user or can you nominate it for deletion? I tried to edit it, but the mess is incredible. Thanks, --MacedonianBoy 15:00, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't bother. Commons doesn't encourage users to upload competing versions of the same file on top of each other to correct things. It also doesn't like deletion debates on the basis of content disputes like this. It just tends to ignore bad files and let them lie until it becomes clear they'll remain unused because all the local wikipedias reject them. Let's just renominate them for deletion once that has been clarified on the other projects. I've tagged them as disputed in the meantime. Fut.Perf. 15:22, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I totally understand that and I tend to practice it, but when I saw that he went on several Wikipedias and he added the file, I could not just watch the crap. Best, --MacedonianBoy 17:08, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About the editing

Probably due we editing on the same time, look next editings, M.b. edited mine. Anyway, this only lost of time, brainwashed people anyway. In fact what is not understood about Linguistics and show the census. Which census?! From wiki? Jesus Christ, check the official on stat.gov.mk about what data are collected on censuses. We see earlier this year that FYROM paid a politician within EU to put their topics in their favour, of course the politician resign after revealed. Are also those people paid to make propaganda? We see a lot of this the last 2 decaded. This is the reason this state will not last long and this is very sad. When you build a state in a lie then is the worst for citizens, it proclaims the disolve. I hope not, but let's see, while FYROM try to hide muslims, bulgarians and others, as more give them a reason. Very sad. Anyway. Thanks for the signature and timestamp notice earlier mate.

ps. oh what a surprise, the M.b goes and lick people for his favor rather the true, very same. --Meliniki 15:41, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't realize it until just today, when I downloaded http://indo-european.info/a-grammar-of-modern-indo-european-third-edition.pdf (20 meg PDF file), but "W"-word user's obsession with Greek alphabet "extras" was partially triggered by the Greek alphabet orthography of the "Modern Indo-European" semi-artificial language given there. The "W"-word user copied versions of Schleicher's fable from that book into the en-Wikipedia Schleicher's fable article in 2007... AnonMoos (talk) 00:14, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the File:Sri Lanka's intellectual property law.pdf . You completely read it and then tell.

No, I'm not going to go to that trouble just on your say-so. You are claiming there is a rule in that law that the people who made our template missed, so you go and quote that rule to me. Why don't you tell me where in that passage it talks about government works? Easy: because it just doesn't. You can't find that rule because the rule doesn't exist. What you just quoted is the Sri Lankan equivalent of US fair use rules. It has nothing to do with whether something is copyrighted or not. Fut.Perf. 12:58, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did. It is a fair use rule. It doesn't mean that something is not copyrighted. It actually presupposes that the work it talks about is copyrighted, but then explains under what exceptional circumstances people can use it nevertheless. Please see commons:Fair use to understand why Commons doesn't accept images used only under a fair use exception. All of this has nothing to do with your initial argument that the image in question was published by the government. Fut.Perf. 13:06, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lokomotiv Yaroslavl memorial at Arena-2000.jpeg

Hi FPaS, have you seen latest information over at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lokomotiv Yaroslavl memorial at Arena-2000.jpeg? Obviously the request is in need of closing, but as I have commented it wouldn't be right for me to close it, and I would be inclined to close it as keep inline with the facts relating to Kremlin.ru images. You may wish to contact Stas if you doubt anything I have written there at the request. Cheers, russavia (talk) 20:58, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, neither of us should close this. Let the admins deal with it, is what I say. Fut.Perf. 22:28, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, under normal circumstances I would have closed it, but as I uploaded the image in question, it isn't right that I close a discussion on an image I uploaded, even if I am an admin. But the main thing is, I was wanting to know if you now understand the issues in relation to Kremlin.ru images? Cheers, russavia (talk) 12:04, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, never noticed you are an admin here. Good to know so I will know who I can bug with stuff in the future. About the Kremlin thing, I sort of still find it odd, but since there seems to be consensus over there I'll leave it at that. Fut.Perf. 07:25, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am indeed an admin, have been for some time now. Feel free to bug me with anything you need looked at in future; it appears I have time for it now, now that I've been hounded off enwiki. I saw some thing from you in relation to Afghan uploads, but can't find it again. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Abdul Ahad Momand.jpg - is this the editor you had a problem with? And what was the problem? If they are constantly uploading copyvios, they need to be blocked. Can you point me to any discussion on this, and I will take a look. russavia (talk) 11:22, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, right, Afghanistan, country of no-copyright-ever. We had a few discussions recently over the fact that while Afghanistan has no copyright law, most Afghan web sources actually work through servers abroad (there being little or no web infrastructure in the country itself), which, as I have been arguing, makes them fall under foreign copyright rules too. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:Abdul Rahman Mosque in February 2009.jpg. The other case was at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ahmad Shah Durrani - 1747.jpg, a story of completely botched up, self-contradictory copyright claims. Yes, User:Officer has a backstory. He is en:User:NisarKand, with a sock drawer as big as his ego, who was blocked after I had to clean up this and he reacted to it like this. There have apparently been several earlier DRs for some of his files here too. Fut.Perf. 12:48, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh by the way, I just stumbled across this upload log. That doesn't look confidence-inspiring either, does it? Fut.Perf. 13:02, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Iliad

Hi,

I don't understand this kind of change. Having text as path is not recommanded in SVG files, it avoids changing the text and make the SVG file useless... Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 10:47, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry if you didn't like the change. I take your point, but if the file consists of only text, without any special formatting, and without any particular graphic arrangement, as you would have in a diagram or map or the like, why would we use an image file in the first place? Why not simply insert the text, as text, in the Wikipedia page? I assumed that what you wanted to do was to show the user an example of characteristic typesetting of Greek text, in a properly chosen font, when the user can't be assumed to have any one particular font installed on their system. For that purpose, having a text sample converted to paths seems like the safest way of doing it.
Although, now that I think of it, there might be a technically better way with a text representation combined with an embedded font definition, but I'm not sure if Mediawiki and/or Inkscape can handle that kind of SVG. I might have a look at it.
With the previous version, I felt there were three problems: first, the chosen font (DejaVu Sans) is actually rather ugly and not in any way characteristic of the tradition of typesetting Greek. Second, the MediaWiki SVG engine seemed to be producing poor letter spacing at small sizes, making scaled versions of the image rather hard to read, at least for me. And third, if a reader were to download the file and wanted to store it and display it on their own computers (outside MediaWiki), and didn't have the DejaVu Sans font on their own system, they'd be back to square one; the SVG would probably display in very ugly ways for them. With the version I made, we can at least guarantee the reader will see something approaching a nice-looking traditional Dido-style font (I used the "Old Standard" font from here).

Hey, don't be impatient; just because I don't answer within half a day doesn't mean I'm ignoring you! :-) I have two problems so far: I cannot actually find this pic on either the Matense website or on their Flickr account. The second thing is, from what you say I can't be certain the owner actually meant to release the photo for free use everywhere and for any purpose. If he just told you it's okay to use "on Wikipedia", that's not sufficient for us. We need an explicit license statement "under the terms of the CC-BY license" or similar. Our normal method for verifying such permissions is that you should please ask the owner if they could send a permission statement to that effect to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org", or put such a statement up on their own website (e.g. if it's already on Flickr, put its license to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA there.) Could you do that? Thanks, – Fut.Perf. 07:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the pic is here in his Flickr page.
I asked the person to send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, so I'd like you check it out to see if he sent it. He will put that he agree his images stayed here under the Commons conditions--Inefable001 (talk) 07:37, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Future Perfect! I saw your notations, first for the Evansville 1937 flood image. I added my thoughts to the discussion, immediately following yours. Next, a fascinating tile work photograph caught my eye. I left my comments after yours on the discussion page.

Finally, I wanted to mention this very lovely transportation map, merely because it involved the same user, although I don't know if you had participated in evaluating the batch of images with which it was associated. Those other images were all deemed acceptable by WP editors. I only made inquiries regarding the transportation map, my comments are here, at the very end of the page, for your reference.

A general observation: You are very thorough! It is nice to see that. I am a relative newcomer. I hope my choice of language does not seem inappropriate or harsh to the user in question, as I did not intend it to be. I enjoyed looking at these images very much. Thanks, Ahnaaf (7:01-UTC)

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, the permission statement [8] is not quite explicit enough to make it clear that this is not merely a specific permission "for Wikipedia", but a permission for free use by anybody and for any purpose. This is necessary for our licensing requirements. Could you try and ask them for an explicit release under a license such as "Creative Commons - Attribution" (CC-BY) or CC-BY-SA? It also doesn't seem quite clear whether that admin actually is entitled to do so on their own, from the way they speak of "our photographers", so they might have to check with the actual author first. Skanderbeg woodcut

Hello,

I noticed you added "PD-old" copyright tag to the [[File:Skanderbeg woodcut.jpg]] (diff). Will you please be so kind to clarify your action, taking in consideration that author and source are unknown?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 19:37, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't know where exactly it's from at the time, but anybody with half an eye for art history can see this is a 16th-century work. Looking a bit into it, it turns out it's from Philipp Lonicer, Chronicorum Turcicorum, Frankfurt 1578. (This [14] page has a scan showing it on the printed page) This book is also mentioned as a source of such illustrations in this [15] modern edition of Barleti (apparently Barleti's Siege of Shkodra is contained in the Lonicer volume); the modern edition contains several stylistically very similar woodcuts from that source, which it attributes to en:Jost Amman. Fut.Perf. 22:47, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Licensing says that "All description pages on Commons must indicate clearly under which license the materials were published, and must contain the information required by the license (author, etc.) and should also contain information sufficient for others to verify the license status even when not required by the license itself or by copyright laws.".The "half an eye for art history" is of course not enough. Thank you for addressing this issue and addition of the source (diff). All the best. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 13:21, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and at the time I added the tag, the file had all the minimum requirements mentioned in that text. That it didn't also contain the additional info it "should" have contained was the fault of the original uploader, not mine, so go and spread your nauseating pontifications on their page, not here. You are not welcome here. Fut.Perf. 13:44, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  1. The original uploader had totally 5 edits on commons and retired (link).
  2. At the time you added the tag no information was presented about the work except that it has been found on the web. It only said: Author=Unknown and Source=Web, which I believe is not minimum requirement of Commons:Licensing for pd-old. You probably know that, otherwise you would not have added necessary information.
  3. One editor added this image (diff) a couple of days ago. When I checked its licence I noticed this issue, which is now, thanks to you and my pointing to it, resolved. That is the only reason why I approached to you, although I expected your hostility based on our past interactions. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 15:20, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Paintings

Dear Future Perfect at Sunrise, I am not the creator of paintings, but I am the copyright owner. These paintings belong to me for many years. That thing doesn't mean I am the copyright owner, but I contacted the artist after you underlined to me the lack of permission and he said that he never claimed copyright ownership and gave all permissions for his paintings that I own to me. Physical ownership of the work doesn't automatically confer copyright to you. The copyright still belongs to the painter, no matter if he ever intended to "claim" it. This may seem like a bit of legalistic formality to you, but I'm afraid if you want to keep these images on the wiki, you'd need to get the painter to send a proper license release (e.g. a "cc-by-sa" statement) to Wikimedia via OTRS. Not sure if that's really worth it, of course; it's not like those paintings have any particular educational value anyway. Fut.Perf. 10:36, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The original uploader, User:OberRanks, only made a blanket assertion that they had been created by some US agency, but never added concrete/verifiable info about the who's, where's and how's (i.e. no url, no bibliographical identifier, no OTRS). If that's not "no source", what is? With this uploader, any sourcing/licensing claim that has no watertight proof to it should be considered non-existent anyway, as he has been shown to have routinely faked his attributions on pretty much everything he ever uploaded. Files for deletion

Hello, Future Perfect at Sunrise- these Commons files have been proposed for deletion over licensing concerns:.

I thought you should know, based on these diffs in which you were involved: 1, 2, and 3.

There is a parallel discussion underway at en-wiki FFD about duplicates there: en:WP:Files_for_discussion/2019_September_28 JGHowes  talk 19:22, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Balkan map

Hello Future Perfect at Sunrise, I saw that you made topographic maps of Yugoslavia and also of Greece. I wanted to ask if you were interested in making a similar map but of the whole balkan peninsula? Because the current one is not really detailed. Cheers, Ahmet Q. (talk) 14:21, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I probably won't find the time for things like that. Making these, with the software setup I was using back at the time, was quite time-consuming, and I'm not even sure I've got all the necessary stuff on my present equipment. Fut.Perf. 21:46, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright no problem, I completely understand. It is true that making maps takes time, especially topographic ones. Thanks anyway, Ahmet Q. (talk) 07:05, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
