Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,

Picquet map of Paris 1814 - U of Chicago.jpg[edit]

Re: File:Picquet map of Paris 1814 - U of Chicago.jpg I am curious how you made this map. Did you get it de novo from the U of Chicago website, or did you just join the left and right halves that I previously uploaded? --Robert.Allen (talk) 01:02, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paris 16, Of course, this is the University of Chicago website, but on both this website and Gallica, I've been following pretty much the same procedure, knitting together overlapping zoomed screen shots with Photoshop. It's tedious, but gets easier with practice, and full-screen mode on a large monitor reduces the number steps. If you zoom to pixel level in Photoshop you can get exact alignments. Unfortunately, the screen images are JPG, since these websites don't seem to support downloads of TIFF images. Too bad! Anyway, I think we should mention that the full map is derived from the original halves and is a more compressed JPG image. (Each time we edit and recompress, or increase compression of, a JPG image, the fidelity to the original decreases, so that's why it is good to mention the history of the image. One could also save the images directly to JPG files and then align all these images, but there are so many, it's too much work for me. I think there is one editor who may have some sort of script to automate this process, but it is probably difficult to share.) --Robert.Allen (talk) 06:56, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Maps from Traité de la police[edit]

Hi Paris 16, Apparently d'Anville was not the cartographer of these maps. Note that he was very young when they were first published in 1705. BNF credits Nicolas de La Mare as the cartographer. Instead these maps are from the 'Collection d'Anville', that is, apparently part of a collection of maps that d'Anville owned that ended up in the BNF. For instance, see the detailed info for the first map at Gallica. Mybe we should create a Category:Maps from the Collection d'Anville for them. --Robert.Allen (talk) 08:50, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:La Force de l'Art 02 - 2009 - Anita Molinero - Poubelles.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Hachette Livre[edit]

Since most of the older books published by Hachette do not have Hachette Livre on the title page as the publisher, it would be easier for editors to identify the correct category, if we just use the name Hachette. --Robert.Allen (talk) 20:14, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. I suppose we could, but it is also the family's surname, so that might also be confusing. I initially chose "(firm)" because the company is no longer just a publisher. I don't see any ideal solution for this, but it's not a very popular category, so probably not that important. --Robert.Allen (talk) 20:41, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps Category:Hachette (publisher) is the best choice. Would that work for you? --Robert.Allen (talk) 21:33, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see it's a problem at the moment. If it should become one, it can always be changed at that time. --Robert.Allen (talk) 23:52, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for agreeing to a different name and doing the work of changing it. It seems there may be a preference to avoid parentheses in category names. Although these are common on the English Wikipedia, maybe on Commons they not as widely accepted. If that's true, I will try to avoid using them in the future. --Robert.Allen (talk) 17:54, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Monumenta 2014[edit]

Hi, Paris 16. I think the images of artworks and structures in Category:Monumenta 2014 are copyright violations. Pictures of people attending the exhibit are possibly fine, as are permanent elements of the building interior like the staircases, but works themselves (like this and this and even images of temporary structures like this and this, because they can be argued to have « un caractère artistique certain » strike me as a problem. Regards --Rrburke (talk) 20:22, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, again. OK I'll tag them. But I'm confused by your assertion that File:Monumenta 2014 at the Grand Palais, Paris 25 May 2014 (6).jpg and the others like it are OK because they only depict a part of the work: surely the work is copyrighted in whole and in part? Cheers. --Rrburke (talk) 11:33, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:BnF Bibliothèque-musée de l'Opéra exposition l'ère Liebermann à l'Opéra de Paris 7.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:BnF Bibliothèque-musée de l'Opéra exposition l'ère Liebermann à l'Opéra de Paris 7.jpg]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hi Paris 16, I'm thinking this image is not in the public domain. We need to determine when "P. Philibert" died, since apparently he was the creator (see [1]). If we can't determine that, it should probably be deleted. However, I did just upload an alternative, a bird's-eye view reconstruction by the comte de Clarac (1777–1847). See File:Vue cavalière du Louvre médiéval - comte de Clarac, 1826 - Christ 1949 Fig5.jpg. --Robert.Allen (talk) 21:12, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, 1200 is probably too early for File:Louvre chateau 1.jpg. It looks very much like a reconstruction of the Louvre of Charles V, since it has heightened towers, windows in the curtain walls, and dormer windows and roof replacing the original parapet, etc. --Robert.Allen (talk) 21:19, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe there is no rush to jump to conclusions. It looks like an artist's conception, possibly 19th-century. Let's look around a bit more to see if we can find some information about this image. --Robert.Allen (talk) 09:24, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Paris 16, You probably noticed already, but User:Jarekt has beautifully solved this problem. Philibert must have been the one who photographed the print. It would be nice, if the Louvre would not put copyright claims on PD images, and identified the artist on the page where they showed it. For an art museum it seems a bit lax, don't you think? --Robert.Allen (talk) 05:37, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Naming of files from data.iledefrance.fr[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for your categorisation work on this batch upload! I appreciate it a lot.

I realise I screwed up the naming with the double extension « .jpg.jpg » − not sure what happened, I had it right for the test run. This would take forever to fix by hand, so I’ll get it fixed using a bot when the upload is done, you can not worry about it :)

Thanks again,

Jean-Fred (talk) 13:27, 16 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done, I ran Steinsplitter’s bot during the night. All files are now correctly named. Jean-Fred (talk) 10:38, 28 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This file is not a photograph, but an engraving made by Camille Enlart. So why keep on categorizing it as a photograph? Best regards, BrightRaven (talk) 07:08, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If there are any other necessary corrections, please give me a hint. I'll fix it. BTW: Thank you for adding all the categories. --XRay talk 19:26, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
