Hi,

I just uploaded my first Chinese stroke order animation (and, incidentally, my first file on Commons). I was wondering if you'd take a look at it and make sure everything is okay. Was the background supposed to be solid white and not transparent? Is it too fast? Should the pauses between strokes be longer? Was I supposed to format the file info in a certain way? I tried to use {{SOlicense}} but I didn't understand what the parameters were. I also tried to make the first few frames just the character in solid black, but whenever I did that it somehow messed up the rest of the frames.

Hello, and congratulations for this first try.

The strike order of your character is OK, and clearly rendered, so basically there is nothing wrong in the character - so far, so good. Now, it can clearly be improved, so that aesthetically it looks like a drawing with a painting brush and makes a more pleasant sight - you may want to compare these two animations on the right, for instance, and check Commons:Stroke Order Project/Graphics guidelines/Bitmap animations for detailed explanations on how to draw such pictures (feel free to criticize and suggest improvements, of course) :

• In the Category:Order.gif stroke order images, the characters are first shown in black against a white background (one second), then switch to light gray (one more second) then start the stroke order - end the final picture (once again, all black) as a full 1-second pause (which adds to the 1s of the first picture when repeating the cycle). You may have reasons for doing differently, which is perfectly OK, but if your character is to be included in the series, it should stick to the same convention.
• All your picture frames are separated by 70 ms, even when nothing is changed : this is much too mechanical and a bit too fast. Switch to a 100ms basis when the brush is "down" - what's the rush? - and increase the delay between strikes : when the brush is "up", you can insert a full 500 ms pause ; and when that pause separates two picture elements it can go to a full 1000 ms - time for the painter to think "I've done that one, now what's next? oh, yes...". In your animation there is no difference between frames 7, 8 and 9 (first time the brush is "up" - same thing between frames 17-18-19), but that is not necessary if you can adjust the delay between frames. (And if you can't adjust these delays, I'd suggest switching to another pict editor).
• Your character seems to be drawn in black-and-white, with ragged edges. To smooth edges, you must start with a picture where the limits are gray-scaled, and respect these gray limits during the animation.
• All your picture frames seem to be made of a gray character progressively filled by black paint (I may be wrong?). Technically, it is much easier to "undraw" the character : start with the black (ie, black and gray on the edges) character on a transparent background, and erase the black (and gray) parts in reverse drawing order. Then, settle the animated pict so that these frames are just "added" to the grey background (in the correct order, of course) not just "substituted". Using this technique, the characters appear much smoother : there is no problem to respect the gray transitions between "black" and "white" ; and the sharp limit between erased part and preserved part is a moving one - the eye won't see that there is no gray transition in this limit.
• In your animation, there is a slow-down between frames 6 and 7, when the brush reaches the end of the strike. Very good ! keep doing it that way, with slow transitions at the beginning and the end of line segments, or when the brush must take an angle. Always try to render the way the brush is acting - good job !

Now, for some fine-tuning of your drawings with respect to brush movements :

• Frame 12 is unnatural : there is no way a brush can make such a mark on the paper, sliding downwards ; when the brush arrives at the bifurcation area it must go straight ahead. The brush slows down, the pressure increases so that the strike is wider (frame 14 is OK), and then when the brush goes down the vertical limit can cross the horizontal one - and maybe with a very small loop in the brush movement). Well, OK, actually, since there is a 70ms time delay this can't be clearly seen in the animation ;o) - but yet... Just try to understand how the brush can paint such a character, and the movement will be much more natural.
• Frames 26-27-28 are technically slightly incorrect : for such an acute angle the brush goes straight down (thin line - leaving unfilled space on the left), then pauses and goes slightly upward and left (this is when the left part is filled), and then speeds to the right. In that case, there is definitely a small loop in the brush movement (=the center of the brush).

Your first Chinese stroke order animation has been much better than my first one, anyway, so keep on doing a fine work - Michelet-密是力 (talk) 13:05, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Wow, thank you for taking the time to type out all that helpful feedback! I'll definitely try to keep all that in mind when I work on my next stroke-order .gif (or maybe even clean up the jiao one), and I hadn't even seen that tutorial thing, so I'll definitely be looking at that from now on. However, I don't totally understand the mechanics of doing the animation backwards. How do I go about "settling" the gray background character into each frame of the animation? GIMP is OK, I use it as well. To build the animation backward, here is my method (The names may not be correct, since my GIMP version automatically runs in French - sorry...) :

1. Create a 300x300 frame, white background, black ~ 270pt centered character (it should leave ~ 30 to 50 px on all four sides). (Check that the edges are smoothed with gray aliasing.) Make sure the "image mode" is color to enable brightness and saturation adjustments. Open the frame stack manager (Ctrl+L). Call that first frame "Background (1000 ms)". Zoom in (200% - 300%) for more comfortable editing.
2. Duplicate the background (frame manager, right click). Change the name to "(1000 ms)#2". Duplicate #2 (the name should switch to "(1000 ms)#3"). Change that name to "(100 ms)#3" (this will be the default frame delay).
3. Edit frame #2. Use the "luminosity / contrast" twice setting the "luminosity" cursor all the way up, ending with a light gray character on a white background. This is your gray background reference (upon which the character will appear in transparent mode).
4. Edit frame #3. Use the "magic stick" color selection tool, select and eliminate all white background, ending with a black character with gray aliased edges on a transparent background. This is your final character (once everything is drawn). End of preparations, un-select the current selection, choose the "eraser" tool and start to "undraw" the character :
5. Drawing loop : [ Duplicate frame #N, creating a N+1. Edit frame N+1 and erase the character part that should have been painted last at this stage (you are building the animation backward), taking into account speed considerations (slow = small variation).]

   Repeat that drawing loop, until everything is erased (typically, creating 3-4 frames for each line segment of the character). Well - almost everything, there is no need to create the last empty stage.

   This is where you should use your artistic and technical sense of brush painting, and technical sense of animation : choose intermediary frames that correspond to significant brush positions or line crossings, slow down in curves and endings, move faster in straight lines, use a curved erasion limit compatible with a brush shape... and so on.

   Just be careful : when two lines are crossing, the result after erasing the first one will be seen for a relatively long time, so that result should be tidy and look like a shape a brush can leave. For instance, look at file:中-order.gif, the end of the hooked second strike is rounded before being covered by the third horizontal strike.

6. Once all the drawing frames have been created (in reverse order) : Reverse the order of frames in the stack (frame menu, stack submenu, reverse command). Then, select the gray character (now second topmost), and put it at the bottom of the stack (shift + arrow-down-button), then select the black background (topmost), and put it at the bottom of the stack (the gray is now at position 2, of course). Your frames are in correct animation order, you may want to check that (filter / animation / play). Feel proud? If it works, you should ;o)
7. Adjust the default 100ms time delays to ~ 500ms between two strikes, ~ 800 to 1000 ms between two character components, 1000 ms for the last (complete character) frame. Check if the animation is correct and "feels" right (filter / animation / play) and adjust if necessary, especially if angles are drawn too quickly.
8. When everything is OK, use the "Filter / animation / optimize (GIF)" to create an optimized version ; check the animation ; switch to a low-definition "palette" mode (15 colors are perfectly sufficient) for space and bandwidth optimization ; and save the result.

This "reverse drawing" method is very fast, because the only thing you do is basically erase the character, with no need to fine-tune the resulting picture for aliasing problem (apart where strikes cross), and that can be done in no time. A character of medium complexity (金) can be drawn in ~ a quarter of an hour ; and when I make an error in the stroke order, I find it more convenient to start anew than to edit the GIF file and adjust the picture components by hand.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

• The original image reproduced by http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zodiac_woodcut.png has no author's right attached, since any such right would have expired since the 16th century.

• I have no gray background seen from my browser, but I know this can vary strongly with the operating system or the browser. I wasen't aware it needed any correction, I would have done it myself of course. Can you pinpoint what the problem has been ?
• If you want to upload your version, it is easy, but you need to create yourself an account on Commons. Use Special:Userlogin for that, or connect yourself to the global account system (from hu:, I fancy...).
• Feel free to clean source images (once you have an account), all positive contributions are welcome.

If you want me to rebuild the animation on cleaned-up pictures, just leave me a message.

I love the (animated gif) image. I don't think you should go from a pro-simian to a baboon to a chimp to a human, however, when we do have other notions of our ancestors. A baboon has a "muzzle" and ths its face is too specific. We share a common ancestor with modern chimps and there is no reason to think that it looked like a modern chimp. Why don't you also insert an Australopithecus and maybe one of H.habilis or H. erectus?

Actually, the problem is the same with all the pictures (with a possible exception for the File:Kinorhyncha.png which may be an ancestor) : all are modern life forms. I tried to select animals that could be representative of primitive forms, that is, not too specific, but nobody knows what the actual ancestor looked like.

The animation underlines the anatomical similarities and the innovations from one stage of anatomical organization to another, that's all. As the comment goes in the file's information, it illustrates "Continuity and derivations of life forms between sponge and human male" - life forms, not evolution.

The same kind of animation from Australopithecus to H.habilis or H. erectus to H.Sapiens could indeed be made, and that would indeed be illustrative of an evolution in time, but that is another question.

I must admit that the baboon and the chimp are very artificial, however, their only justification is technical : I needed these two intermediary pictures to rotate the body (from a side view to a front one), erect the spine to a vertical station, and raise the arm from the ground to the final salutation. A direct transition from a quadruped to a human would have hopelessly blurred the morphing. This has been commented in the picture information, by the way. Do feel free to suggest alternatives, however, but keep in mind that technical difficulty.

J'ai vu le travail impressionant que tu a fournit, ce qui a permit d'arriver environ jusqu'au radical 200. Voir /Kangxi_radicals/175-214 (les pages 1-99, et 100-175 étant complètes pour les vrais 214 radicaux de kangxi). Il reste donc une quinzaine de radicaux, et une vingtaine d'animations (ordre t+j) a créer pour finir le coeur de la série. Si tu peux en faire, fonces :]

The meaning of duplicate

A duplicate is file that is the same as another. When deleting similar files[1], please don't call them duplicates. These maps had different areas shaded. I'm not contesting the deletion or anything (I don't care), but try not to use misleading deletion summaries or, in the case that you did think they were duplicates, pay more attention. Thank you. Ma signature de base sur le wictionnaire était "Michelet" ; je n'utilise "Micheletb" que parce que je suis en train de faire des éditions à cheval entre Commons (où mon compte est imposé à "micheletb") et le wictionnaire, comme là où je fais de la maintenance ; mais a priori si je fais des éditions ciblées sur le wictionnaire je peux repasser sur "Michelet" - sauf si ça pose problème, bien sûr. Chinese characters decomposition page

Dear Michelet, Thank you for you kind answer, I preferred to wait for a feedback to better understand the project before making any changes.

Now, the purpose of the project is clearest. I had derived my suppositions from the work itself and questions and answers found in the talk page. And of course, I'm aware of the http://internationalscientific.org/ among the many etymological works.

I will start to complete the table with missing characters and to put the new unicode from the latest unihan in a new sub page (since the main onw is already heavy enough).

I would also suggest to make a subpage with guidelines as in User:Artsakenos/CCD-Guide for the same reason. As you can see I better described the work, filled with references and notes.

Yug, tu exagères : as-tu oublié ton français? I'm working on etymologies right now, but can make an animation from time to time, of course, if punctually needed. Though I think most of the animation requests are not really relevant : animations are needed for characters elements (文) but not really for compound ones (字) where the stroke order is straightforward. Michelet, you are right, not all requests are really needed. Of course it depends on point of view what you call «need». If it helps you I can make suggestions which characters are in my opinion first need (all radicals, even when composed), second (all radical variations), third (some characters with special meaning: seasons, zodiac animals, eartly branches), forth (the rest, as BKRequest). I have completed radicals recently, and I am having a break with animations doing etymologies (which is my first interest, actually). This work will enable me to identify characters components that need to be animated, and I can do these if urgently needed, of course (they belong to my first interest). The rest may be sorted, but really - for a student in Chinese, there is no need to detail how a zodiac animal is drawn, when the compounds are straightforward, and there is no need to draw the stroke order for a non-student in the first place. Non è utile sopprimere stemmi di famiglie solo perché uguali a quelli di altre famiglie. Già in passato era stato deciso di non utilizzare immagini con nome generico per illustrare stemmi di famiglie diverse. Oggi chi va a cercare l'immagine di uno stemma d'oro con tre fasce di rosso nella categoria Category:Coats_of_arms_of_families_of_Italy degli stemmi delle famiglie italiane troverà solo quello della famiglia Belvis e non saprà più che anche la famiglia Bellotti utilizzava quello stemma. Non è ragionevole pensare che possa andarlo a cercare nella pagina della wikipedia italiana, perché, non conoscendo il nome della famiglia, non saprebbe in quale armoriale andarlo a cercare. Hi, I just found Commons:Deletion_requests/2012/10/24 and your statement there. I believe, that the animation in question is covered by the original 2008 OTRS statement and should not be deleted. As far as I know, it consists exclusively of the Global Paleogeographic Views of Earth History he licensed as CC-by-sa back then. The animation was created later on, but that does not violate the copyright of the original creator of the maps. Palaeomaps and OTRS

I know OTRS is backlogged, so it will take a while to get a clear answer and a ticket number for the palaeomaps that were recently deleted. However, the release I have obtained in legit, and since this affects many images that are (or were) widely used on various Wikis, I was hoping we could push something through. No, it is too early. I'm in e-mail exchange with Ron Blakey, he has indeed accepted the idea of a free license (he sent me a copy of his mail to you), but is considering the option of asking us to downsize his pictures - not a big deal, but uploading them straight away would create a messy situation. Given the situation I wouldn't have deleted the files , but since someone did, I won't restore them until the situation is clean. Ron Blakey is aware that to make his decision formally clear an e-mail has to be sent to OTRS when he feels ready, and will probably put me in the copy list, as soon as I'm sure that a valid authorization has been given I will upload the whole series. Too fast a restoration might induce him not to send anything to OTRS, which would not solve our problem. Be patient, wikipedia is a long-term project, in a couple of year from now this delay will make no real difference. Michelet-密是力 (talk) 18:27, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

I've been talking with Ron Blakey, and he still insists that he doesn't want people to exploit his work commercially. I've read the legal code for the CC licenses on Wiki Commons, and they ALL permit commercial exploitation. J'ai indiqué que ce fichier est un duplicate de l'autre indiqué en ref : même résolution d'image, même dimensions, même origine du fichier (Google Art project). Dcoetzee s'est planté dans son import massif depuis google Art et fait deux fois le même import. La seule différence, c'est que l'un possède encore son cadre qui n'est pas libre de droit et l'autre a déjà vu disparaître le sien (cf l'historique de l'autre fichier). Autrement dit, on est bien dans le cadre d'un duplicate classique et ce fichier devrait être supprimé purement et simplement, je ne comprend quel débat serait à lancer à ce sujet. J'ai vu que tu avais opéré une refonte de l'article Wikipédia francais sur les kanjis. Je t'en remercie. En effet, j'avais progressivement travaillé sur le paragraphe définition mais il avait sans doute fini par devenir trop gros et s'intégrait mal avec l'ensemble de l'article.

Toutefois, je constate que tu n'as pas souhaité conserver une des rares parties qui à mes yeux avait précisément sa place dans un paragraphe portant sur la définition du terme kanji.

Ainsi, le mot kanji peut se définir de deux manières différentes : 1. En tant que réalité concrète : en japonais, un kanji est une représentation sur un support papier, un écran etc. d'un caractère chinois ou d'un kokuji. 2. En tant que concept : en japonais, un kanji désigne, dans la nomenclature des sinogrammes et des kokuji, une unité (une entrée) comportant une ou des signification(s), une ou des lecture(s) ainsi qu'une ou des forme(s). Autrement dit, dans cette définition, il arrive que deux caractères visuellement très différents soient en fait deux « formes » d'un même kanji. C'est la raison pour laquelle on parle également de « classe de caractères » (字種, jishu) comme synonyme de kanji. Les kanjis ainsi définis forment une macrostructure faisant partie intégrante du système d'écriture japonais.

J'avoue que cette partie n'était pas parfaitement aboutie, dans la mesure où elle est sans doute trop difficile à comprendre pour un public non spécialiste. Ayant pour ma part pas mal lu, le plus souvent des ouvrages en japonais, sur les kanjis, il me semble qu'aborder notamment la notion de 字種 a sa place dans un article encyclopédique.

Il est vrai que les définitions que l'on trouve généralement sur le web sont grosso modo du type "les kanjis sont des caractères chinois utilisés en japonais". Bien-sur cette définition est tout à fait correcte, mais dans le cadre d'un article encyclopédique, n'est-il pas un peu dommage de ne pas essayer d'aller un peu plus loin dans l'analyse du sens du mot kanji ?

Encore un fois, ma double définition était sans doute trop difficile à comprendre et donc elle est à revoir. Au passage, je serais ravi que tu m'aides à l'améliorer.

L'article définit "les kanjis". Mais il n'apporte pas de réponse à la question qu'est-ce qu'un kanji ? Je prends un exemple 眞 真 Est-ce le même kanji ? Tout repend du contexte. C'est précisément cette question du "contexte" que j'essaye de résoudre par une définition simple: (A) un système d'écriture donné (définit LES kanjis), (B) une représentation d'un caractère appartenant à ce système (non seulement 眞 et 真 ne sont pas le même kanji, mais on pourrait aller plus loin en prenant en compte par exemple la police), (C) une classe de caractères appartenant audit système (dans ce cas 眞 et 真 sont le même kanji).

Cette question est essentiellement celle des variantes de caractères : une même idée peut être transcrite par des compositions initiales différentes, ou par des évolutions différentes d'une même composition initiale (comme 眞 et 真) conduisant à deux tracés canoniques. Il suffit de dire qu'un caractère peut avoir des variantes de composition, de même qu'un mot français peut avoir des orthographes alternatives : on ne peut pas dire pour autant que la définition doit intégrer cette question. C'est un phénomène assez fréquent en chinois, et qui n'a rien de spécifique au kanji ; il n'y a donc pas de raison d'en discuter dans l'article kanji (la question est plus à sa place dans l'article sur l'étymologie des caractères). Merci. Donc de ton point de vue, le débat n'existe pas, 眞 et 真 sont le même kanji. La pluralité des formes/ossatures/字体 (ou variantes de composition pour reprendre ton vocabulaire) étant mentionnée dans l'article, on peut en effet s’arrêter là dans la définition. Tu m'as convaincu sur ce point. Les questions relatives aux 字体 sont cependant un débat vivant au Japon qui implique une variété d'acteurs (calligraphes, enseignants, informaticiens, professions de l’édition, etc.) C'est parce que l'acceptation usuelle du mot kanji en japonais laisse planer un doute que ce concept de 字種 existe. Même si, comme tu le soulignes, des questions similaires existent concernant l’écriture du chinois, vouloir exclure ces questions des articles spécifiques aux kanjis me semble difficile à soutenir, dans la mesure où les normes en vigueur dans l'archipel, tout en ayant leurs racines dans la tradition chinoise, sont une réalité locale et qui suit une évolution tout à fait indépendante du voisin chinois.

Je vais donc introduire la notion de 字種 en note de bas de page dans un premier temps, en ayant pris soin de ne pas trop donner une tonalité de travaux originaux, ce qui je le reconnais constituait une erreur. Cdt, Maidodo
