First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks for uploading Image:Uol_subclub.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Cats handled by page[edit]

Hi Simon, welcome to commons. If believe that you are mistaken in removing all the catgories that you have been removing. Even if a page lists certain characteristics, we still include the image in categories in order to help sort the image. Thus, I believe you are in error to be removing these categories. Importantly, every image on commons must be listed in a category or be on a page. The page I'm diff of in particular is [1]. Patstuart 20:42, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As above: please DO NOT leave images without at least one category, in any case. Dantadd 21:29, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can correct the category, but please, do not leave pictures uncategorized. Dantadd 17:54, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy to help out if I can, but I do not have Commons:OTRS access. For confirmation of the letter it might be better to check with somone who does. See [2]; admins with a "y" in the Commons category have the relevent access. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 23:10, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Thanks for raising the copyvio issue about my picture. I'm not sure whather this is an actual copyvio (photo of a 10-year old mural painting used for advertising in Haiti -> not quite the most usual case), so I've made it a deletion request instead, so that other people can say something about it. I am not expert in copyright, and I guess this case could be borderline.

Sorry, that I forgot to add the category. It's not my habit. And thanks for doing it for me. --Siga 08:22, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where did you see here a word about "a copyright violation"? Elektron 07:32, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nude deletion[edit]

I don't understand your opinion on 2 of the deletion requests. IMO Commons has also the potential to offer graphic/artistic material to deal with outside of the other Wikimedia projects (for artistic purpose for instance: collage...). As long as it's not pornographic and as long as it's quality has a minimum of value, I don't understand why those kind of images would be out of the project's scope. Regards. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 06:51, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BTW these images are part of many uploads I did yesterday among whose it was mainly Black and Asian women. Indeed I realized that a large majority of the nudes on Commons were showing White/Caucasian women so I wanted to correct this racial bias (which I hope was not on purpose). That means these uploads also have a potential of information and education. If a young person see the category "nude women", it's better for him to see different types of people. Ifnot Commons might unconsciously give the impression that people is mainly white. And that can indirectly lead to racism. If the project on Commons is to show the diversity of reality, that purpose has to be considered. Thanks for your comprehension. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 07:10, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
1) We can't decide to delete a picture just because we consider it non aesthetic : this is subjective (I personally find them great!)
2) We can't decide to delete a picture just because we consider we already have enough pictures for the same theme : choice of deletion is therefore non neutral and contrary to rules of Wikimedia. Moreover a better choice gives some diversity. What's wrong with diversity? Plus I find strange to have such an argument on such subject and not for subjects like the Eiffel Tower... for which we have tons of photos (and a relative variety)
3) Even if don't consider B&W postcards, there is a racial bias. I tried to correct that a little bit with my downloads. As for your comment, I understand that the light on these 2 pictures doesn't allow to really appreciate the colour of skin but I think ethnicity is not only seen by the colour.

Deletion warnings[edit]

Nude deletions[edit]

Though you might stay with your arguments, you also might want to reconsider your vote because of a new element: the author of the photographies is apparently a quite famous Dutch artist called Peter Klashorst. Therefore, the potential of this picture is also to illustrate his work. This concerns the following deletion requests (but maybe you haven't voted on all of them):

Of course you're free to keep your vote as it was. Thanks for your comprehension. --86.67.47.175 07:41, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I think that copyright laws (specially French) about derivative works are all wrong, and that we apply these laws much too blindly, but the issue is much larger that the deletion request. To me it is a clear non-sense that we can't upload pictures of the Eiffel tower at night, of even the most basic toys, or of most French buildings because the architecte died less than 70 years ago. It is also completely non-sense that we can't upload orphan works. This opens very serious issues that most administrators here are not ready to face. Until that we will regularly meet such deletion requests such as this one. Thanks for asking me, but sorry that I can't really help more. Yann (talk) 22:03, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The first permission was sent by the author himself, his name ist Gerhard Gepp and his email adress ist g.gepp@hotmail.com. The upload has been made by user Marinelli. Can you help ?

I saw that all 5 files relating to Gerhard Gepp has been deleted. This is a mistake. Only the high resolution files sould be deleted because of error, the lower are okay. Thanks for uploading File:SisKittysml.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:SisKittysml.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

The reason I'm asking is that it seems the image had been affected by a MediaWiki bug that caused Wilder Kaiser's version to be shown to at least some users, even though he'd reverted it back to mine. I'm trying to decide whether to revert my version (which I think is indeed oversaturated) back to the other one, but I'd like to hear your opinion first. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 10:18, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Simonxag!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:BrunetteStagFilm.ogv has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Luiz Carlos Cappellano

Dear moderator, Paulo Freire wasn't a painter! He was the most important brazilian professor, and during all his life had figheted against the military dictators in our country (1964-1985), against the analfabetism and hungry. I had painted the mural, I had taken the photography and I can prove that the CEFORTEPE is a public space in Campinas-SP: you can enter in the site of the Prefecture and find the space inside the Education Secretary: www.campinas.sp.gov.br

Congratulations.

"superseded"[edit]

Hi Simonxag, I requested a deletion for a graphic with the argument: "3 reasons: superseded, vector version available, and not used." Now everone seams only to read the word "superseded" and is giving votes without looking at the picture. You wrote: "Should be kept to maintain the evidence trail for the copyright of the svg version." But the svg-version is not a copy/derived work the other file. How should I phrasing the deletion request better? (I read English, but writing is quit difficult.) Greetings --Kolja21 (talk) 14:54, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I've noted good work by you. Thank you for this. As I think that you have the ability, I was just wondering if you'd be willing to be a Commons admin? Of course, if you don't want that is no problem, but I think that Commons would do good to make you an admin. Let me know. Hey Thanks[edit]

Hi Simonxag, just saw your post. That really means a lot, thank you. When will these images marked for deletion be DELETED for good? Another editor told me about 7 days from when they were submitted on 11/14. Let me know at your earliest convenience.

I really want to thank you again for your post on the page below saying these file images need to be deleted because there is no way to tell who uploaded them which is the case here. Bottom line, somebody leaked my password and this individual uploaded these photos WITHOUT CONSENT! Password has been securely changed and I look forward to these file images to be RIGHTFULLY deleted!

Respectfully Yours,

I understand but,[edit]

Thanks Simonxag, I understand you completely and I appreciate your effort as well. It's just that they are from a private personal scrapbook gallery and I don't want these getting out. It's a violation of my privacy because of the way they were uploaded by another without consent through a swiped password. Until these photos are deleted all one has to do is "Save As" and they can do whatever they want no matter if they are private photos or not. The longer they sit out there just increases the chances of this happening. I'm sure you understand why I want them deleted ASAP. Like I said, I also completely understand you as well Simonxag.

Thank You Again For Your Very Valued Time & Effort,

Jaderocker (talk) 18:34, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw your post on my talk page[edit]

"Computer Savy" friends of mine I allow to use my computer for business & recreation etc. They come by my house and use my computer at times and even take my computer to there house, we are friends. They might update my virus protection, you know computer techy stuff like that. While my computer was at one of these computer guys houses one of their friends who is also a computer guy also (who I don't personally know) thought he would help out and upload a ton of bodybuilding and pro wrestling pics on my desktop folder. I was told by my friend this individual thought it would be a good thing because I am not a computer guy and he had the time. He really thought I would like the idea. Keep as many pics as possible out there so if another big pro wrestling opportunity should arise for me (Las Vegas) or something of that nature in the near future It would be great for promos. My friend told me this friend meant no harm and is sorry and he feels bad that he didn't ask me and uploaded the image files to Commons. I hope this clears up any confusion Simonxag. It's the principle that I was happy with a few good quality photos the way it was before in my Commons photo gallery and for somebody to go in that I don't even know (good intentions aside) and do this to me is a violation that really ticked me off! My password has been changed and the account is secure now. I look forward to this issue being taken care of once and for all very soon, every image file on that list DELETED. If I wanted them in there I would have put them there myself, not by somebody else. I hope you completely understand now why I am irritated. I appreciate your care on this matter.

map[edit]

I saw your response here, [4]. I would like to question that. It can be seen that the map has many errors. These are not minor errors, but major errors. I have given sourced images that show how wrong this map is. On top of that it is not used anywhere on wikipedia. I suggest reconsidering your quick conclusion, and deleting this very problematic image. (LAz17 (talk) 06:51, 15 December 2009 (UTC)).[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

BotMultichillT 21:13, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I dont understand you or maybe I not understand you correctly. I have fixed tons of deletion requests by this user, he used speedy and such constructions. He HIMSELF nominated ALL his images for deletion on December 25, January 3, Janmuary 5 (2x), January 7, January 11. I restored all original descriptions, restored the license tags, fixed the deletion requests, informed the user, removed the multiple requests from the request subpages, removed the tons of multipostings from the dayly logs. That took me one hour, just to fix other peoples mess. The only deletion request not created by HIM is Commons:Deletion requests/Images of User:Expert19612005, i left this request and the user request on every image after carefully checking the history. In fact two individual requests on every image, requested ~7 times per file, no request by me. And now you come around, claim that the person NOT created ALL deletion requests himself (even though his last 350 edits are related to nothing but this requests...). You comments on the deletion requests even doubt that the requestor H.Brinkmann is the uploader. You have not checked the history of this deletion requests, the person who wrote this IS the upload on ALL deletion requests!! You have also not checked the file history, have a look at File:Expert19612005..jpg, on 07:33 UTC, 5 January 2010 I restored the meta information, categories and fixed both requests. That edit is similar to the edits on the other image pages I did the same time. And now you say that Im the originator of a censorship campaign?? I honestly ask you: There is a history tab on every page, have you seen this? Your claim is ridiculous, read, conclude and pardon! --Martin H. (talk) 02:52, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

P.s.: And if you not understand german you should not try to interprete it. I asked the uploader many times not to remove license templates and inforamtion templates and not to request deletion on files he already nominated for deletion. And I explained him, that we have deletion discussions and that his simple and short rational (e.g. my file, delete) is not applicable on Commons but that the comunity will decide if we keep the images or not. --Martin H. Pay attention to copyright
File:WW1GermanTrenchClub.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Thanks for uploading File:Condom_vending_emu_park.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

By all means delete the image, which was uploaded some time ago and was not intended to part of a 'destructive game'. But please take out those unkind and untrue remarks. Thank you, I'd already seen it. It's one of three videos on YouTube to use that soundfile. Sadly the requirements of the free license have been ignored but then that's YouTube for you  :-( . First of all: Politeness is good and keep the right to edit.

Now, the ticked isn't in the right place (If you don't know there are a field called |permission= in the Information template, that is there exactaly to fill with the ticket in question. When you are cleaning a category with 1000 files, you don't have time to go look where the uploader might had placed the otrs ticket. And I AM a OTRS agent, so if I need to look a ticket I can doi it myself.

Anyway, moved to the right place and next time try to be more polite when talking with an adm who is only doing her job. Béria Lima msg 15:08, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When you added "Category:Inverted Christian cross" to this, you made it a subcategory of "Category:Satanism", which is inappropriate... AnonMoos (talk) 03:42, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't "upset" so much as disappointed that the categorization recapitulated a popular misconception which is debunked in detail on the English Wikipedia article. If something is specifically a St. Peter's cross (as opposed to a generic inverted cross), then it is by definition non-Satanic. (For something which is actually Satanic according to traditional European Christian symbolism, see File:Satan-traditional-arms.svg.) I'm not entirely sure about your theory of categorization, since if CategoryA in CategoryB in CategoryC does not mean that CategoryA is a subset of CategoryC, then the whole motivation for COM:OVERCAT no longer exists... AnonMoos (talk) 22:28, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

According to http://www.sacred-texts.com/tarot/faq.htm , the company claiming copyright has said:

"The Rider-Waite Tarot works (cards and books) have 70 years from date of death of the author. A. E. Waite commissioned the drawings from Pamela Colman-Smith and under the old UK Act the copyright owner is the person who commissions the drawings. Therefore, copyright will expire 70 years from A. E. Waite's date of death. He died in 1942 so copyright will expire in 2012."

Your date revision would appear to be your personal Original Research interpretation... AnonMoos (talk) 13:34, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have a ban on Original Research on the Commons, certainly not on whether something is copyrighted or not. However, far from being OR, my date revision is based on the current Commons consensus see Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom. The copyright owner may well be someone other than the author (such as the author's employer), but copyright is based on the date of death of the author. I believe the situation was different, but we are only interested in copyright rules now. All the copyright changes in the UK were retroactive, things that had gone out of copyright came back in. The FAQ you cite uses a number of arguments and quotes a statement from the copyright holder (which you use) but also states "Since I'm not a lawyer, this is presented for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered as offering legal advice." (My italics). --Simonxag (talk) 15:36, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That may be true, and obviously I'm not a lawyer, but I'm not sure that it's our role to make more expansive claims than the copyright-holder claims for himself... AnonMoos (talk) 16:04, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think this needs to be discussed by other (perhaps more knowledgeable) people and sorted out well before the start of 2013. --Simonxag (talk) 19:46, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can't disagree with that! Sorry if I was abrupt, but I'm a little tired of these precautionary principles and retroactive extensions changing something which went out of copyright for most purposes in the United States ca. 1985 to not being available for Commons usage until 2013, and now all of a sudden 2022. AnonMoos (talk) 22:18, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I share your frustrations. The precautionary principle is there to protect our users from images that are effectively booby-trapped with hidden copyright charges. Ever extending copyright is an ugly fact that we have to live with. --Simonxag (talk) 01:04, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Burns[edit]

Hello. I am not sure if I am more bemused than amused that you have caused this to be deleted. However I would like to know who the artist was if it is actually a copy of an existing artwork. Do you know? Thanks. RSLlGriffith (talk) 17:10, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've no idea. People seem to think it's a copy of an old artwork, but it is a modern painting and that's where the copyright problems come from. There is no permission and no freedom of panorama. --Simonxag (talk) 17:32, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have checked Google Images and failed to find this image of Robert Burns. I remain confused. Are you saying that my photograph of someone's possibly unique work is flagrant copyright? Otherwise you must first know that this artwork is a copy of an existing one - which 'you' don't it seems. I do know who painted it - about ten young people. I could ask Gavin - the leader - where it came from. The young people are also puzzled and are asking for an explanation.RSLlGriffith (talk) 08:12, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have copied all the above comments to The deletion discussion page. Please add subsequent contributions there. --Simonxag (talk) 10:44, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Photo deleted in 2009[edit]

Hi I've just noticed that you nominated a photo of mine to be deleted in 2009. It portrayed my son with a BSA air rifle. You said "The photo looks very wrong: I don't think it has just been enhanced, I think it's a collage (effectively a fake). Such an image could be legitimately created as an illustration, but there's no description of it being such". I thought I'd just tell you that your allegation is complete rubbish and it was a genuine photo. I'm sure you acted in good faith, but an apology would be nice please. --Charles (talk) 21:04, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Women of the United Kingdom has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

back in the bad old timestm you transferred this picture from en:WP: [7]. Bit late to ask, but - are you sure this is Franz von Bayros? Guy would have been 32 by the time the picture was taken. Here's another likeness of him. Doesn't seem to be the same guy to me. What do you think?
