2014

McZusatz, I just noticed that you nominated the above file for deletion for lack of license. Please do not delete file subpages like this KML code. They are used by the parent file templates. See Commons:Geocoding/Overlay for more info. --Jarekt (talk) 19:27, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Can I borrow/steal your archive code?
Not long after joining Wikipedia, I decided to set up archives for my talk page. I was still new to Wikimarkup, and rather than ask someone for help, I decided I could figure it out my self. I did but it was painful, took me longer to set up than it should have taken. Because of this experience, it is my belief that we should come up with a default archive system, and add it to user pages automatically. Not every brand new user, but some combination of edit count or byte size and months of experience (to avoid taxing resources for the millions of user who will make an edit or two and disappear. I even have that as item 15 in my Wikipedia to do list en: User:Sphilbrick#To_do.
Despite that, I haven't done anything here yet, which is an embarrassing omission I will rectify shortly. I took a look at the code you use, which looks like a good option (better than what I am doing in en.wiki) If I understand your code correctly, archiving will happen automatically (after 3 days) for any section in which I place the section resolved template. Do I need to do anything special the first time (because it will cover multiple years)? Do I need to manually create the archive pages or will the bot do it for me?--Sphilbrick (talk) 20:03, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- I stole it as well ;-) . The good thing about the template is that you don't have to do anything apart from marking the section as resolved. (Though, there are even parameters to archive every section after the defined time regardless of the resolved-template.) Feel free to just copy paste my template and modify the parameters to match your needs. Of course you can also refer to the 'official' documentation to adjust the template how you like it.
- Alternative solutions would be the manual method or (as user:Rillke does it) making the talk page a redirect which points to the current sub-talk-page (e.g. talk/2013 , talk/2014 , ...). --McZusatz (talk) 00:26, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

This DR - FOP
Dear Admin McZusatz, This is my last message to you about a DR. I assume this image I tagged is not OK but if it is acceptable--as an image of an elevator--than please vote to keep it in the DR as I am not 100% certain here. It is in Italy. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 09:00, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
- In general FOP-cases do not qualify for speedy deletion. It is desireable to open a deletion request to discuss the subject. --McZusatz (talk) 09:04, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

What's wrong with the picture?
Hello! [115] What is the problem? The picture has been uploaded apparently by its author who has licenced it. Why the deletion tag? --Pxos (talk) 10:32, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
- The other picture of this uploader can be found on the internet and own work is quite unlikely given that he is part of the picture. Thus it seems the best to have a written permission from the original author for both pictures. Anyway: The file was previously published online, hence we need permission because the authorship is not obvious. --McZusatz (talk) 11:42, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
Mattolaituri photo
Hi McZusatz, could I ask why this file was tagged as missing permission? The uploader is marked as the author and I don't see any indication of previous publication. Is there something I'm missing? Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 10:35, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Terana coerulea
Please can you say why you have deleted the redirect page Terana coerulea (which redirected to Terana caerulea)? This page is needed because people may well look up the fungus under this name, which is the one found in Index Fungorum. It is consistent with the rules of Commons:Galleries, which allow for redirects. Strobilomyces (talk) 21:51, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
- The automated redirect does not work because there is additional text. Did you do this by purpose? --McZusatz (talk) 21:59, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

OverBot
How do we stop OverBot?
This is a 'bot that, AFAIK, exists to implement COM:OVERCAT. [204]
The trouble is, COM:OVERCAT is damaging enough when it's slavishly enforced by clueless editors (of whom we already have plenty) and done by a 'bot it's even worse. OVERCAT is not always a problem. In the case linked above, it has removed the band category from an album cover image. Both of the categories are relevant and should be included.
OVERCAT is too subtle a policy to be enforced by a simple-minded 'bot. Can we please stop doing this. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:11, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- All files in subcategories of a parent category are by definition also children of the parent category. There is no need to place it into the parent category as well. Otherwise the subcategory should be categorized in another way. --McZusatz (talk) 11:27, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- "There is no need to place it into the parent category as well."
- No. Categorization is navigational, not ontologically defining. Although this transitive relationship is usually true, it is not absolutely true in all cases (such that we can assume it and so make automatic edits). OverBot does not understand this, and so is not reliably making improvements by its edits. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:06, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- Here's another example of 'bot damage [205]
- The image is appropriately categorized into both Category:High-speed steam engines & Category:Steam generating sets. Steam generating sets is also a sub-cat of High-speed steam engines, however this is a much weaker relationship, is not a defining relationship and not all examples of generating sets are also members of the high-speed category. Yet because these two categories (as their concepts, rather than their sets of members) have a link, the two categories should preserve their relationship.
- This 'bot, and slavish over-imposition of OVERCAT, make such relationships impossible. That weakens the usefulness of Commons and its navigation. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- When "not all examples of generating sets are also members of the high-speed category" the high-speed category should obviously be removed as a parent of Steam generating sets.
- Also the bot is considered useful by other editors: I got multiple requests to remove such OVERCAT. --McZusatz (talk) 15:46, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- Here is another example of pernicious removal of Category:Survivors of Buchenwald concentration camp, as Elie Wiesel and Max Hamburger are not the only survivors depicted. Tm (talk) 16:07, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- "When "not all examples of generating sets are also members of the high-speed category" the high-speed category should obviously be removed as a parent of Steam generating sets."
- No. The category is a valid member of its parent. There is no need for such a simplistic view as you are taking here.
- Also, per your cited example, that is no consensus for a simplistic and global bot like this. You fixed up a handful of errors, no doubt correctly, but that is not the same thing as, nor reason to, apply this same removal globally and without case-by-case consideration. That would be like removing the category 'Fish' from 'Eagles', then assuming that all instances of 'Eagles' should be removed, no matter where they're found and whether they were correct. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- Here is another example of pernicious removal of Category:Survivors of Buchenwald concentration camp, as Elie Wiesel and Max Hamburger are not the only survivors depicted. Tm (talk) 16:07, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- Bot shut down per example given by Tm. --McZusatz (talk) 12:36, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thankyou. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Bot error?
Yacbot added an uncategorized tag to a file with a category - I undid it here. Thought you'd want to know, Ruhrfisch (talk) 23:37, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- The file had a category which is not part of the commons category tree. (In fact, it was only an empty page (c.f. hist)) Therefore I consider this file as uncategorized as someone will not be able to locate it through the category tree. --McZusatz (talk) 00:01, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- By the way: This category is a duplicate anyway. I will delete it in the coming days... --McZusatz (talk) 00:02, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- I have changed the edit summary to explain the edit: (c.f. example). --McZusatz (talk) 19:04, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

YaCBot changes credit line
In this edit, YaCBot removed the web link from the author's credit line. If the author demands a link to the original file, the bot shouldn't remove it? --Sitacuisses (talk) 14:45, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thx. The link was made unclickable by this edit (not removed in a technical sense). However this is serious and I will try to fix it... --McZusatz (talk) 21:00, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
- YaCBot will now ignore pages containing a credit line almost completely to make sure the contents of a credit line are never touched. --McZusatz (talk) 18:57, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
- On hold. I still need to check all edits and revert appropriately... --McZusatz (talk) 19:06, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

YaCBot tagging kml overlays
Hey, I just noted that YaCBot will tag kml overlays of files as uncategorized (see this edit). That breaks the kml used as an overlay option on the main file page. Is there a way to have the bot not tag file subpages ending with '.kml'? Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:00, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Moving comments around
Hi, please do not move comments around, as your bot did with this edit - the positioning may be important. In this case, it explains exactly why a particular category is present, and if the comment is moved to before the categories, it becomes meaningless. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 20:41, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- Due to many editors using HotCat, it is not visible in most cases anyway. I am not sure but it could be added to the description so it is visible to all? Apart from that I will try to fix it if it is feasible. --McZusatz (talk) 23:07, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Zusammenfassungszeilen

New Panoramio Category of Images Needing Human Review
This new Panoramio Category of Images needing human Review has one small problem.
The Panoramio Human review doesn't appear here when someone then clicks on the Maintenance Links under License review...like the link for picasa images needing human review. So, people don't know it exists and no one will mark it. It should not be hidden; people should not be forced to then click on 'Panoramio files needing review' like this here to even see this new partly hidden category.
I don't know if you can solve this display problem. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 04:52, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
PS: As an aside, this, this and this category is so new that it has no description. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:03, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

{{Date}} template
Hi there. I just noticed your bot making edits like this. I updated my upload bot's code to use {int:license-header} from now on, but I am wondering about the removal of the date template. I want my bot to be using the standard format so that it doesn't need to be cleaned up after by other bots, but I thought that the date template was preferred for standardizing date format. Can you let me know what the reasoning here is? Dominic (talk) 18:48, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
- The information template already has this template built in. There is no need to nest twice. ;-) --McZusatz (talk) 19:04, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Transferring files
Thank you for information but if I transfer files here, the versions in Turkish wikipedia will be deleted. So link will be dead. Do I have to copy-paste the links in every picture?--Veritas-tr (talk) 17:24, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- As you can see in the section above, sometimes it is not immediately clear that you transferred the file. You could also just state anywhere on the file page that you transferred the file. This will prevent speedy-deletions based on wrong assumptions. --McZusatz (talk) 17:34, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Unknown field tag encountered
Hallo McZusatz,
--McZusatz (talk) 21:26, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Danke für die schnelle Antwort. Ich werde es mal probieren. --Bürgerentscheid (talk) 21:29, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Help with "sources"
Hiya McZusatz: Thanks for fixing File:AndyMurrayWimbledonTrophyCropped.jpg! However, it still failed source so it flopped right back into images with a source. I have fixed it now, so don't worry, just in future always check the file to see that it still isn't missing source, license or description - or it will just be tossed right back into the problem category! Replacing badgif with "Convert to PNG" templates
For cases such as File:Hurleyconference.gif, File:Admiral Frederick J Horne.gif and File:Pimpf 1941.gif, these are photographic images, not diagrams. Surely the template replacement was done by mistake? It would make no sense to mark these images for conversion to PNG; the purpose of the badgif template was to mark the image, so that people know that it was uploaded in an inappropriate format. -- 李博杰 —Talk contribs 00:29, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
- No, actually I have done this by purpose. I will upload them as PNG shortly due to several reasons:
- Better thumbnails. (GIF thubnails are often pixelated due to the 'palette-effect')
- Smaller size. (GIF files are larger in general than PNG)
- Easier editing. (Someone may want to edit those files. Surely the editor prefers a 24-bit palette over the 8-bit GIF-palette)
- It's a lossless conversion and also the transparency, if present, does not get lost. (PNG supports 8-bit transparency in contrast to GIF's 1-bit transparency.)
- And in case the source (where the GIF originally came from) is not JPEG nor PNG, it is the only reasonable dealing to convert the GIF to PNG. Even if the source was PNG or JPEG, we do not loose anything by converting the GIF to PNG and then uploading the original version on top of the converted PNG. --McZusatz (talk) 10:20, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi McZusatz.
About File:Ilice di Carrinu.jpg you deleted, source was not really flickr. I've original file from author (Piero Giuffrida) and he has assured me that he has sent the permission to permissions-it@wikimedia.org on 14th of march as required.
How can I check the permissions and reload the file? We are both newbies.
Thanks in advance and regards --Kukitto (talk) 09:40, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, both files (File:Monti Rossi da nord.jpg as well) are restored and tagged with OTRS received. However, some Italian OTRS agent should answer the ticket instead of myself. --McZusatz (talk) 14:19, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Anyway now the two files on Flickr are "free to:
Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.
The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms."
--Kukitto (talk) 14:38, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Was soll der Revert ohne Ansprache?
Leif Czerny (talk) 08:06, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Replacing GIF with PNG images
Hi McZusatz, I just stumbled upon some GIF images of which you had created a PNG version and then universally replaced the GIF with the PNG. Is there a reason why you are doing this? As far as I can see PNG is not an inherently better file format than GIF. While I think we should not convert PNG to GIF (possible loss of quality) I don't see why we should convert GIF to PNG. There can't be an improvement in image quality and often the PNG version is even larger than the GIF version. Is there some policy regarding conversion of GIF images that I'm not aware of? Thanks and best regards, --ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 04:53, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
GIF thumbnail horrorshow example
Unfortunately you did not understand the real reason why the GIF thumbnail is problematic, and your edit to "Commons:File types" was inaccurate. The reason the rescaled GIF doesn't look good is because it has a transparent background, and when GIFs with a transparent background are rescaled here, the transparent area eats away at the non-transparent area. If the GIF was changed to be fully opaque, then its thumbnail would look perfectly fine. Until two or three years ago, GIF thumbnailing was in fact better than PNG thumbnailing in some respects... Images with categories are marked as uncategorized
It seems that YaCBot marks images as uncategorized, although they have categories. Can you correct it? --Jonund (talk) 11:31, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Category use
As I often do, I'm diffusing Category:Seattle, Washington to more precise categories. Normally, unless Category:Seattle, Washington is actually inaccurate, I try to refine the category. However, I notice you've put a bunch of Flickr images of food, such as File:Jamaica (5201032744).jpg, in that category. Nothing about the location of a photo like this seems particularly significant, and there is presumably no hope of a more precise geographic location, so it doesn't seem useful for it to language forever in Category:Unidentified locations in Seattle, Washington. Do you have any problem if I just remove Category:Seattle, Washington from this and other similar photos? Or do you have another suggestion for refining the category? - Jmabel ! talk 04:54, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- No, in fact I highly encourage your strategy. I did a lot of flickr uploads lately and I am still busy with fixing the categories. Removing the location-category and adding a more appropriate category (which describes the actual content) is far better in those cases. --McZusatz (talk) 15:10, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Category redirects
Hi there. I requested the speedies because I think it is more useful to keep the category history in one place rather than splitting it up, especially now that categories can be moved in the same way as other pages. Green Giant (talk) 13:54, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Why on earth did you tag my file? Kw0 (talk) 13:00, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
- Cropped files with missing exif could be from anywhere. Do you have the full resolution original file? --McZusatz (talk) 13:05, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I've got the original file and I've never uploaded any copyvio. I bet you check each and every file of your batch uploads from flickr and have written permission sent by e-mail from the photographer. I am saying this because there's always the risk of Flickr washing, as you probably know, and you can never be too careful...
- If you had checked, you would have seen that I am an experienced editor (since 2007, as well as autopatrolled) on Commons with over 10,000 productive edits (not some automatic batch tasks) and that this isn't some throwaway account. Kw0 (talk) 14:00, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, I have removed the tag. (The OTRS team has enough work anyway and this was clearly a false positive while patrolling the latest files) --McZusatz (talk) 14:24, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

YaCBot
Hallo! Danke. --XRay talk 05:22, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, dein Bot ist OK. Er hat einen Fehler in meinem aufgedeckt. Danke für den (impliziten) Tipp. --XRay talk 06:27, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Standardizing dates
When I saw "Standardizing dates" on my watchlist I feared that the Wikipedia MOS shock and awe troops finally arrived here to pull their let's overrule ISO and IETF (for yyyy-mm) stunt. But actually YaCBot only replaced a ca. 1910 by a proper (wrt i18n) {{other date|~|1910}}. Source for flags and arms of Mexico
Mr. McZusatz
My sources for shields and flags are:
Pages and books from the Mexican government.
http://hubert-herald.nl/INHOUD.htm
ad from someone who has done a good job on the shield even has its very reliable and verifiable sources, most even via internet. and even this in English.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Coins_of_Mexico
In this page I can not say much more. Faulty shields and flags, replaced only give you an example:
Shields were replaced by exhibiting significant errors, the simplest is to see this shield odviamente shield use the current version of the Mexican coat with aggregate that do not correspond with the version that was used between 1934 and 1968.
09/28/14 Excuse me, but I have doubts, have you analisastes my references? and if so, if possible, already have the reference for your modifications ?. Oh and sorry for the bad editing on Commons --Sarumo74 (talk) 00:57, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

- My upload of File:Coat of arms of Mexico (1916-1934).svg fixed a syntax problem in the svg source file. The reason why your upload got rejected is stated in the comment-field of the respective uploaded version. (i.e. COM:Overwrite) --McZusatz (talk) 18:28, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Reversed images
Hi, saw your edits to File:Glider club Svævethy (8174482839).jpg. That was one of several aircraft images that I have noticed have been uploaded in reversed/flipped form. As with the others, the lettering on the aircraft or background (eg OY-XGF) is visibly reversed. I have tried using IrfanView on several images, but it reports that a perfect transformation cannot be achieved. Anyway, the Cleanup image template does not appear to have an explicit parameter for reversed images, so could you perhaps investigate that to cover this topic better, or should we query that on Commons talk:Media for cleanup ? (watching here) MTIA, PeterWD (talk) 10:23, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- Just two quick notes:
- Feel free to revert my revert while stating the reason in the edit summary. This will help to identify the cause in future.
- We have Category:Images to be flopped back but the category name seems clumsy to me and there is no template connected with this category.

File tagging File:ZDFcheck-Screenshot.png
This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:ZDFcheck-Screenshot.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Should the categories be at the very bottom?
Regarding 128833173: there seems to be a number of files with categories listed at the bottom of the == {{int:filedesc}} ==
section instead of being at the bottom of the page. I wonder if such pages could be left as they are, because to my mind, it makes even more sense to be able to edit categories as part of the description section? TIA. ⁓ [Gyft Xelz · talk] 19:05, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- If there is nothing to clean up, he also won't touch the categories. Nonetheless, if an edit is done anyway, the categories are grouped at the bottom because it seems to be "consensus" now to place them there. (The file you mentioned above even had them split on two locations which is even more misleading...)
- Another observation is that the categories appear at the very bottom in the rendered HTML view, so it actually makes sense to place them in the bottom of the source code as well. And finally considering the broad usage of hotcat, it should not even matter at all. --McZusatz (talk) 20:16, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

languages to be added for subtitles list
Hi,
At File:Marathi Wikipedia ULS.webm I would like to get subtitles added for more dialects of Marathi language namely :
- knn - कोंकणी
- vah - वऱ्हाडी
- smv - कादोडी
- ahr - अहिराणी
- khn - खानदेशी
The above languages are having Ethnologue and ISO codes but are not included in dropdown list for subtitles.
- Besides we prefer to have कोल्लापुरी and बेळगावी dialects (कोल्लापुरी and बेळगावी does not have iso codes) of Marathi added to the list. It would be ok to write mr- मराठी (कोल्लापुरी) and mr- मराठी (बेळगांवी) as additional options to standard Marathi language code until these dialects get separate iso codes.
I do not know which is the right place to make the request for this on commons so requesting you for your kind help and support in this respect.

Upload wizard
Hi McZusatz, I am encoutering a problem with the upload wiizard since I am back from vacations : when I try to upload a file, there is no display of progress. The 'wheel' keeps on turning, but nothing happens. It looks like nothing is getting uploaded. Do you have an idea what is going on ? Is there a workaround for large files ? As far as I know, chunked uploads works only for uploading a new version of a file. Cheers, — Racconish ✉ 08:23, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- The bug is already reported multiple times but WMF ignores such issues to spend more time on inventing feckless user rights. And no: You can modify the file name by hand in the chunked upload.js pop up and thus upload any file (create or new version). Maybe @Rillke: can place the "upload new version (chunked)"-link on the toolbox of every page? --McZusatz (talk) 08:36, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. That is exactly what I was looking for. — Racconish ✉ 09:26, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- There should be a link now when visiting any page in the file namespace, no matter whether it exists or not. Ideally, script would check after changing the destination whether file exists and change the summary/description input if required. -- Rillke(q?) 16:06, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- Or provide two links where the one for re-upload has the file name filled out and the one for upload only the file-name-placeholder and an extended summary/description field? The "create a new file"-upload link can then be visible in all namespaces (like upload wizard). --McZusatz (talk) 16:57, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
- Anyway, thanks to both of you. It's nice to see that with all the ongoing aggravation, you remain dedicated to helping out. Cheers, — Racconish ✉ 17:41, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the chunked uploads script does not seem to work for me since a few days : it keeps 'waiting for the server to publish the uploaded file' forever. Any clue or workaround ? Thanks, — Racconish ✉ 14:37, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Bot bug
Please fix your bot so that license templates are not substituted.[722][723]. And while you're at it, please consider XML decoding the text such that we're not getting these |
's and
's on the file description page. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:10, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, cleanup is not part of this bot's task. I can not substitute nor re-substitute; The resulting description is an exact copy of the original description to prevent unnecessary confusion. --McZusatz (talk) 07:38, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- OK, you are right about the subst'ed text. But the duplicate XML encoding was not part of the original text, was it? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:10, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
- XML decoding is handled by wiki-java? Note to myself:
parseLogEntry()
callsparseAttribute()
. - My hard drive is broken right now but I will do some debug next month or so. --McZusatz (talk) 21:00, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Magog the Ogre: So I could not find any bug. The server indeed gives
{{Information | Description = {{ pt | 1 = Brasão de Tarumã }} | Source = Prefeitura de Tarumã | Author = Prefeitura de Tarumã | Date = 2010/03/08 | Permission = | Permission = }} = | Date = 2010/03/08 | Permission = | Permission =
as a result. Thus, I am not sure what to do:- Keep current code and don't change the behavior.
- Apply
org.apache.commons.lang.StringEscapeUtils.unescapeXml()
once on every upload summary. (Is this error prone?) - Apply
unescapeXml()
repetitively on the reason-string until nothing changes anymore. (E.g. the above example needs two reps.)
- Looking forward to hear your feedback. --McZusatz (talk) 19:12, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- Can you provide me the link so I can look at the XML myself? I can't tell if you're trying to say
&
or&
because of the way you pasted. If it's the former, then that's exactly what the XML should output. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:41, 14 November 2014 (UTC)- Sorry, it's the actual source code: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/9014451/ --McZusatz (talk) 23:09, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Well, I give up then. Either the uploader's tool was borked, or your framework has a bug in it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:10, 15 November 2014 (UTC)- It looks to me like it's a framework bug. Source doesn't have bad data in it: [724]. Please add meaningful descriptions to your Flickr transfers
Hi,
You transferred these images from a Flickr account:-
- File:2012-06-24 040106.jpg
- File:2012-06-24 074944.jpg
- File:2012-06-24 7138.jpg
- File:2012-06-24 7149.jpg
- File:2012-08-26 1296.jpg
Could you please clarify who or what they are meant to be and add meaningful descriptions to them please? I assume that they were transferred for some good reason, but that is not obvious.
From looking at the Flickr account, I suspect that one of the images may be of the band "We The Kings", but I assume you know more about these images than me.

I don't log in on commons very often, so I managed to miss that one of my files had been put up for deletion:
- User talk:Iustinus#File:The High Priest - 1916234235071.jpg
- User talk:Iustinus#File source is not properly indicated: File:The High Priest - 1916234235071.jpg
Unfortunately, since the file is now gone, I can't quite see what the problem was. I know I did get the artist's permission, and I should be able to track down my correspondence with him if need be. But perhaps I simply used the wrong license template? Since I don't have admin privileges I can't look at the last version of the page and see what I did wrong. Since you do, could you maybe review the page, and either send me the text or just explain what the problem was? I did go to a lot of trouble to get that file, and would really like to have it back. --Iustinus (talk) 08:19, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- The information you provided on the file page was:
|source= [[Flickr]]: [http://www.flickr.com/photos/37873897@N06/8048203872/ The High Priest - 1916234235071] |author= [http://www.flickr.com/people/37873897@N06 Flavio Grynszpan]
- However, I could not find an image after following the link, so the license could not be confirmed. --McZusatz (talk) 10:15, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- OK, I contacted Mr. Grynszpan, the original artist. He's not clear what exactly happened, but apparently the image was accidentally set to private. He's remedied the situation, so I guess I'll go submit the file for undeletion. --Iustinus (talk) 05:21, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
- PS. Just noticed you are la-1... now I regret not writing you in Latin ;) --Iustinus (talk) 05:43, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
- PPS. The file has been undeleted. Now that the original text is restored, I see that I had written:
- |permission=Author posted privately, but invited me to upload it: "I uploaded it to flickr under the CC license but I did not make it public, just for you! You can download it and use it at your discretion."
- (I sort of dimly remembered this, which was why I was asking for the information that was on the page. But when I contacted Mr. Grynszpan, he had no memory of this, and could not recall why he had set it to private in the first place—which is why I said it was an accident, above.)
- I can see why that may not have been enough—presumably Mr. Grynszpan would have had to send in a statement to Wikimedia confirming what I quote him as saying. Well, now it's mostly moot, because he set the image to public. But, quick question, suppose he changes his mind and sets it private again. Will the file once again be in danger of deletion, or will Steinsplitter's {{Flickrreview}} be sufficient to prevent that?
- Thanks, Iustinus (talk) 21:27, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
- We now have the flickr source and author confirmed. A CC license which is once granted, can not be revoked and thus, setting the file to private again or deleting it will not change the status here on commons. --McZusatz (talk) 04:35, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
