First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Qing map[edit]

I have seen a lot of Qing maps from different websites so far. They almost universally agree on the map (for the Qing Dynasty at largest extent), except for some outlier islands, especially the Sakhalin Island. The 1689 Sino-Russian Nerchinsk Treaty did not explicit mention this island. Also, unlike most other islands such as Hainan and Taiwan, Qing did not have military existence on the Sakhalin. Many English maps such as this do not consider it part of Qing territory, unlike some other maps (especially Chinese maps). A few days ago a Wikipedia user named Tobby72 insisted on replacing this map in the article stating that Sakhalin did not belong to Qing. He is partially right since there are indeed many sources suggesting so. In addition, there are almost no English Qing maps actually explicitly draw the Spratly Islands as part of Qing Dynasty (maybe part of Qing, and maybe not, but explicitly showing so is a POV). After that, I decided to NPOVify the map (showing dispute or avoid the dispute altogether). Thanks. --Hisacw (talk) 22:35, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stop Chinese national POV pushing edits[edit]

Hi, Benlisquare. Please stop your Chinese nationalist POV pushing edit. This image was taken by the reporter of the Japanese Navy and published on the album of the Japanese Navy. They are soldiers of the Shanghai Special Landing Force. They were afraid of possible chemical attack by the Chinese Nationalist Army (There is no mention about whether the Chinese 29th Route Army used chemical weapon or not). Shanghai Special Landing Force is nothing but small garrison unit and they don't have chemical weapon. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 10:55, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a reliable source that affirms this? You have changed various descriptions on the English Wikipedia that have existed there since 2007; the source for your image also happens to be a BBS discussion board. Also, cease your ad hominem allegations, if you want to discuss something with me, do not behave like an elementary schoolkid and call me names. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs 14:24, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing templates[edit]

Hello there. I wanted to point out something in the licensing templates you used for the Natalia Poklonskaya images. The format you should be using is {{CC-BY-SA-3.0|1=author name}} (see change I made). While the template doesn't look two different between the two, they categorize differently. Templates that begin with {{Self| are put into Category:Self-published work automatically, and they shouldn't be in that category. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:54, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kadı Message 18:44, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for removing the talk page block. I was hoping to make a few clarifications.
  1. I do not deny that I have made inappropriate edits to enwiki over the past few days, and I fully accept that the enwiki community considers these edits disruptive.
  2. However, I have not made any edits to Wikimedia Commons since the enwiki indef block began, so I believe that the risk of me causing further cross-wiki disruption on Commons is very low, and that I am acting in good faith by restraining from making any edits at all.
  3. Unless I continue to make disruptive edits, crosswiki or anywhere, I believe COM:NOTWP should apply in this circumstance - what happens on enwiki should be exclusive to enwiki; preventing me from contributing to Commons would affect my ability to contribute to the English Wiktionary and Chinese Wikipedia, which are my next most commonly-edited wiki projects.
  4. You have also requested for a global block at meta:Steward requests/Global#Global lock for Benlisquare. I believe that this is excessive, since my contentious edits have been relegated to enwiki, and I have not caused any disruption elsewhere.
  5. There was no prior warning for the Commons block, yet it is an indef block. I have made problematic edits, but the situation here feels excessive and unfair.
  6. Blocks are supposed to be a preventative measure to prevent further disruption; per COM policy itself, blocks are not meant to be punitive.
I will not make an unblock request yet, but I will probably do so in a few weeks or months later. I am hoping that the avenue will still remain open for me, when the time comes. --benlisquareTalkContribs 20:59, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Benlisquare The global lock request was opposed by another admin, then withdrawn. Take some time to think over the other issues before making an unblock request. Brianjd (talk) 12:34, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are an old user, so I can comfortably expect that you are familiar with policies. Therefore, I did not consider warning necessary before the block. You know the block reasons and your uploads, please think a while, if your unblock request contains valuable arguments, I can remove the block after 3 months. Please think and understand blocking reasons in 3 months. Best, Kadı Message 13:37, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete votes on files still used by you[edit]

You voted to delete the files in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Algorithmically-generated portrait art of a young woman with long blonde hair.png and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Algorithmically-generated art of a French maid teasing the viewer.png, even though those files are still used on your zhwiki user page.

As far as I am concerned, as long as the files are used there and you remain in good standing on that project, these files are ineligible for deletion except as copyright violations. I said so at the DRs. But your delete votes might override that. Can you clarify? Brianjd (talk) 07:35, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The way I see it, whether or not an image is in-use within userspace doesn't have any bearing whether my images are COM:SCOPE or not, since even on zhwiki the userpage policy is "user pages should not be filled with excessive information unrelated to Wikipedia" (paraphrased); if they are used in articlespace or have potential to be realistically used on a non-Wikipedia Wikimedia project, then they fulfill COM:SCOPE. If users deem that the images fail COM:SCOPE and COM:PORN, then that should be the outcome, regardless of the zhwiki userpage usage; conversely, if users deem an image to be of good enough quality to keep even if it can't realistically be used anywhere in articlespace, I will also not oppose their decision. Perhaps, consider it a "weak delete" sort of !vote? I'd like to add that I have no interest in making any further edits on zhwiki until the discussion relating to my global block on meta is well and truly over, even if I am in good standing there. --benlisquareTalkContribs 09:17, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
COM:SCOPE#File in use in another Wikimedia project: The uploading of small numbers of images (e.g. of yourself) for use on a personal user page of Commons or another project is allowed as long as that user is or was an active participant on that project. I can’t comment on zhwiki rules, but your user page there certainly does not look excessive by the standards of other projects I have seen.
But since you said you want to leave it to the community to decide the fate of these files, and you don’t want to edit zhwiki for now, I think we should just ignore the fact that these files are used on your zhwiki user page. I will add this information to the DRs.
I respect your request at enwiki to be left alone for now; I intend this to be my last edit to this page. Brianjd (talk) 09:28, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please copypaste the following as a non-!vote Comment to that nomination, as a new reply to GPSLeo's post The software cuts the original works into small pieces runs some calculations over them and then generates a new image, if it's not against any rule?
  • Comment: A typical Stable Diffusion-based model checkpoint file, for instance Stable Diffusion v1.5, is typically around 3.97GB in filesize. The AI model saw 6 billion pictures from its training dataset, and formed a set of algorithms stored in a single file totalling at roughly 4 billion bytes during the AI training process. Please explain to me how it is possible to fit an entire picture within 66% of a single byte of information? For context, the ASCII letter "a" is one byte, and the UTF-8 character "中" is two bytes. AI models contain algorithms that are trained on the training data, they do not store the training data, and you cannot retrieve something to photobash it into a collage if you do not store it. --benlisquareTalkContribs 01:51, 28 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
