Hello, tell me, did you find OTRS? I posted one of those, so you can find it easier... File:Banjska_front_view.jpg --WhiteWriter speaks 12:07, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm not an OTRS user, so I can't confirm or deny (hopefully confirm) that the image may be used. It shouldn't take too long for an OTRS user to get around to it, though, perhaps a week or two? –Juliancolton | Talk 15:49, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Importer

Hi, Juliancolton. Could you flag me with the "Import" flag? I am currently testing import functions in relation to Bug 4547... Rehman 07:31, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Evidently bureaucrats can't locally assign the import flag (who knew?), so I guess you'll have to talk to a steward... sorry about that. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:32, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. Will ask a steward. Thanks! Rehman 13:59, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Comments great, definitely QI! But why ISO 2000, 1/800s...? You can see that the quality suffered, maybe with F10, ISO 100 and 1/320s the picture could be FP. Because the composition, lighting and angle of view are very good... I'm not sure if it could FP now... Well... --Carschten 16:41, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Unfortunately, that can be attributed purely to operator failure, as I had forgotten to readjust the ISO after some night shooting the previous evening. :( I think it's still worth QI though, so I'm glad to see your positive review. Juliancolton 01:05, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Account renaming

Hello, I've already been able to rename my account from "gaby_la_star" to "gbrlhtclcq" in the French and English wikipedia, but in commons.wikimedia.org my user name is still "gaby_la_star". Could you please rename my account from "gaby_la_star" to "gbrlhtclcq" ? That would be awesome. I want to rename because I don't want my name to be associated with "gaby_la_star" anymore. Adminship

So... I was thinking about going for adminship here again. I am an OTRS volunteer and as you know an enWP admin. I would like to be able to help with COM:DEL as it always seems to be bogged down as well as help with "speedy" deletions. Let me know if you think I am adminable :p --Admrboltz (talk) 01:25, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Hey Russell, glad to see you're still interested. Just took another look at your vitals (contribs, deleted contribs, talkpage) and it seems to me the community would be readily willing to promote you to +sysop. We always need more admins over at DR, so if you're prepared to trudge through the years of overdue stuff, then I'd say you're good to go. I do not at all mean to be rude by this question, but have you seen my last question at the "Changing username" page? If you haven't been online, I'm very sorry for "nagging" a bit, but I just wanted to make sure that you got it. Thank you in advance!

I have replied at the page with the file in question. Reasons for deletion of my versions are, as you will find there, anonymity, bad quality, and because a new version is already up. Is it possible to delete my version and the reverted one by Jcb, which is mine as well, without deleting the new version that's in use? You would do me a huge favour, and I will not ask anymore of you.

There is a little problem with the user Gaijin. Hiya Julian, how are things? I have a question, licence for File:Sudbury sno.jpg says it is public domain because it's copyright expired, (likely because creation prior to 1923), but the date on the source says 1999 (also I doubt there was much thought put into observing neutrenos in Sudbury in 1923). I'm not familiar with the finer points of licensing on Commons. According to the summary, this image's author is the University of Michigan, yet the license says the file is PD because it's a work of the U.S. Federal Government. The source is listed as a Google cache copy of a page from the University of Michigan's website. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about Commons policies, but this seems a little fishy to me. Is there a template to add to an image description page to tag it for closer inspection? —danhash (talk) 20:15, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

A script in your user namespace may stop working in February 2012

Hi Juliancolton, I found the deprecated function akeytt somewhere in your user-namespace, e.g. Special:MyPage/monobook.js, , User:Juliancolton/easyblock.js. It is likely that this will cause JavaScript errors after Commons is updated to MediaWiki 1.19 in February. You can simply remove this function-call as it currently does nothing. If you have a copy of user-messages in your script, you may remove it and instead activate User Messages in your preferences. Please also note that addLink is now natively supported by mw.util.addPortletLink. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 10:39, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Help with unified login

Hi Julian, thanks for helping me to sort out my login to Commons. However, I'm still having trouble with setting up my unified login because I've got the same problem with my Mediawiki Bazonka account (which I don't think I've ever used). I can't log in or change my password. Can you help please, or will I need to find a Mediawiki admin/bureaucrat to help? Bazonka (talk) 22:23, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

If Special:MergeAccount didn't work, then I think you might have to ask a bureaucrat at mediawiki to do the same thing I did. Hello

Hello Juliancolton, I hope I am not bothering you, but since you are a bureaucrat here on commons and I recognise your name from en.wikipedia I figured I would ask you about my current situation. Recently, I have been usurping accounts all over the wikimedia wikis, as detailed here. I was eventually hoping to obtain a Commons account by usurpation, but when I read the guidelines and found that an account with any helpful edits to its name does not qualify under the current rules, with no provisions for age (7 years since last editing), it seemed a little excessive, so I thought I would ask a few questions:

  1. I appreciate that the Commons usurpation guidelines are more strict than on other projects, but is there room for flexibility in the rules in a case such as this one (where the user is more than likely never to return)?
  2. What are the "GDFL copyright issues" (referenced on the COM:CHU/U page) a renaming could cause?
  3. Ultimately, is it feasible that I could eventually obtain the username on Commons?

Thank you for your time, en:User:Clay (en:User talk:Clay) (64.74.212.18 09:57, 6 March 2012 (UTC))

Clay, I am exactly in the same boat. I have been trying to usurp User:Ahmerkhan into my SUL for more than 3 weeks now, as I am using the same name on the English (en:User:Ahmerkhan) and German (de:User:Ahmerkhan) Wikipedia. I had successfully usurped the English one, but on Commons User:EugeneZelenko has rejected my request saying "User has useful contribution.". This however is not the case IMHO. That user I am trying to usurp has uploaded one picture of two cats back in 2007 which is not being used anywhere. He has no user page, no other articles, no contribution whatsoever. In fact he has probably never logged in to Wikimedia again after uploading the one (!) picture and never will, but it stops me from having a single username on all Wikiprojects I'd like to work in. Very frustrating. --212.183.20.34 11:31, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Global account issues

Hi, i'm Silver seren over on English Wikipedia. I set up a global account a couple of months ago and, unfortunately, the Commons one didn't attach. It's only now become an annoyance, so i'm looking to get it fixed. Could you usurp the account on here (which seems to have never been used anyways) so I can reattach it to my global account? Former admin?

Hi Juliancolton. By coincidence I noticed you gave user PumpkinSky admin rights on 10 July. As for the reason, this is what I found in the log: "return of rights to former admin, resigned with no controversy locally. private correspondence." But PumpkinSky started contributing in 2011 and never got any admin rights nor was his account renamed. Did he have admin rights under a previous account? Could you please clarify this? Furthermore I'd appreciate it if you could add him/her to Commons:List of administrators and the other corresponding pages. A note on the Commons:Bureaucrats' noticeboard would be a nice thing to do too. Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 20:11, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Okay, so I now noticed it's User:Rlevse. I added him to the list of admins, but imho as he was away for so long (1,5 year), a RfA would've been better. Trijnsteltalk 20:21, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
You know that I have been a supporter of yours - however I do think think that, given your own effective absence from the project, regranting admin rights to someone who left the project approaching two years ago without any mention to the community is not really right. I look forward to seeing something more public. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 21:14, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
My apologies if it's agreed that I was too aggressive. I haven't been editing or logging many actions for a while due to family issues and personal business, but I have not abandoned the project by any means. With that said, you are all absolutely right; I should have made a public notice, but failed to due to my own absent-mindedness. I'll do what I can to make this right. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:46, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
I've been keeping up policy and the length of time isn't a problem for me. I have been and will continue to be extra careful and check on things if I have any doubt whatsoever. PumpkinSky talk 02:29, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
To JC - I understand real life issues - we all have them and I do hope you find more time soon. I look forward to seeing some posting regarding this action on a community page in the next day or two. Admins are granted rights through the support of the community and the community must be informed of such actions.
To PumpkinSky. I am sure that you have kept up to date however the community has not been kept informed about this and you will find that there is effectively a new community compared to the time you left the project and many of those now active will not know you - they need to be happy with this. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:38, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Julian, in January 2010 you closed a deletion request in which a large number of files was listed. Your decision was “keep”. This was probably right for most files, but what about File:Airbus Beluga.jpg? Hey Julian, can I ask you for some help? I just uploaded Henrik Vibskov.jpg, which was sent to me by his agency. I have the email message giving me permission, and I assume I need to send that to someone to verify the license (it doesn't actually mention the specific license, BTW, so I kind of you know ahem made a guess). Can you help me out? BTW, the guy looks super cool. I'm jealous. Thanks so much, Drmies (talk) 20:35, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Allow me to throw in two bits. I used to do OTRS. My suggestion would be to email the guy back, have him specify the license in a reply, then send it to OTRS Commons for processing. No one will ever question it. Make suggestions about which license to use in the email back to him. JC: file link is File:Henrik Vibskov.jpg PumpkinSky talk 20:56, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks--I'm on it. I'm proposing the SA 3.0. Drmies (talk) 21:46, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
File:03L 2009 5day.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:February 12, 1983 nor'easter weather map.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:I-84 sign.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi,

You might be interested to know that the image File:Ford_Taunus_GT_coupé.jpg which you reviewed upon its import from Flickr has been nominated for deletion as a copyvio. You can see the fully story at its nomination page.

Look forward to hearing your contribution. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 17:25, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

I have very serious reservations about this process. First off how this vote came to start is problematic. Secondly we seem to have a non-Commons community (en.wikipedia) attempting to decide our Bureaucrats for us given the evidence of canvassing at least through Jimbo's talk page on en.wikipedia. And thirdly I do not think the issue is advertised enough for the general community to know. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 13:23, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Username change question

Hi Julian- I'm wondering if you might have a minute to look at a name change/usurp request I made a few days ago. Can you tell me if you think I've presented it properly? I should tell you that I contacted another bureaucrat a couple days ago to ask him the same thing, and he did not agree with the proposal. In the interim, I have received the consent of the target account holder. Thanks in advance looking in. --Eric my en.wp talk page 17:19, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

I personally don't have any objection, but there are very few local bureaucrats and I'd hate to unilaterally overturn the decision of a far more active (and therefore trusted) user. Could you let him know I think it's ok and see if he consents? –Juliancolton | Talk 04:40, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I'll let him know. He didn't decide against it--just told me on his talk page that he doesn't think it's a good idea in general to usurp usernames that are common names. But that was before I got in touch with the target account holder, who consented with no hesitation. Thanks. --Eric my en.wp talk page 12:48, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

This projects bureaucrat's are asleep at the wheel? -- please wake up

As we know from COM:BUREAUCRATS, "bureaucrats are expected be capable of leading where necessary and of guiding (but not imposing their will on) policy discussions and other major community issues."

I need to draw your attention to an issue which is going to blow up in the collective faces of this project, and with the exception of User:Odder, every single one of our bureaucrats has been asleep at the wheel. We are now destined for a trainwreck, and a whole heap of fallout. Numerous chapters, including Wikimedia Israel, Wikimedia Spain, Wikimedia Argentina and Wikimedia Venezuela, are going to be in a mighty pissed mood and ready to have the head on a stick of any bureaucrat who dares come along and do what has to be done for the good of this project.

As User:Odder has opined in the discussion, him doing what needs to be done will surely have cries of "INVOLVED" levelled at him, so this is now left up to the remaining 8 bureaucrats to snap out of the slumber they seem to be in as it relates to this issue, and deal with it before it blows up further in our collective faces.

Further information can be found at:

  1. Commons:Massive_restoration_of_deleted_images_by_the_URAA
  2. associated policy pages, templates, wikimedia-l mailing list, undeletion request forums, etc.

The community is waiting for immediate action on this issue. Can you please initially confirm that you have received this message, so that the community knows that you haven't died in your sleep :) russavia (talk) 00:10, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Juliancolton,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States - Thank You!

Hi there! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States. We're excited to see people uploading thousands of photos from all over the country! You and others have collectively uploaded 4,929 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States (sorted by state).

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, we have compiled a list of auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project.

If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is also great place to start. The WikiProject showcases the work that has been done so far in covering NRHP sites, and can also help you find articles that need improving.

If you're on Twitter, give us a follow @WLMUnitedStates for updates, news, and more.

If you have any questions between now or the end of the month, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:28, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2016}} to your userpage!

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:30, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Norrie State Park shoreline

I had the same idea as you last summer

Julian,

As I said when !voting for your image at FPC, I was similarly struck myself last summer at Norrie. Daniel Case (talk) 21:17, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

@Daniel Case: Great shot! I'd definitely support that at FPC. Conceptually the same as my nom, but the greenery really gives it an entirely different atmosphere. That stretch of shoreline there is a hidden photography gem, I think... my trips to Norrie always began and ended with the pier by the visitor's center until I started doing some exploring last winter. I'm pretty sure there's a photo to be had on/of the breakwater across from the marina, maybe a long exposure of flowing ice, but the conditions haven't worked out for me so far. –Juliancolton | Talk 16:06, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Photo versions question

Hi Julian (or anyone reading this). I have been learning how to use photo improvement software. But sometimes when I upload new versions of a photo, the version displayed at the top of the File: page is the previous version, not the freshly uploaded one. Am I doing something wrong or is this just an issue with file caches not being updated yet? Thanks. PumpkinSky talk 00:22, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

@PumpkinSky: Yup, that's perfectly normal and expected from the cache being out of date. Check out Help:Purge. Sometimes a simple purge shows the latest version for me but other times it seems to require a sequence of purging and refreshing. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:31, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. I just took a bunch more pics of that chicken flock. We'll see what comes of it. PumpkinSky talk 00:40, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Very nice, look forward to seeing some of them once they're uploaded. I think you said you just got your new camera recently, how do you like it so far? My old D5000 was (and still is) a great camera, so hopefully that held true for the newer models in the line. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:51, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
I love it. I've had it maybe 3-3.5 weeks now. I'm slowly getting better at photos. I really like macro but have learned it's one of the trickier parts of photo taking. I have 3 lenses: 18-55mm, 70-300mm, and a macro 85mm. I uploaded modified versions of my QI and VI pics; I keep a running list on my user page at the bottom. The chicken one and the VI ones are just waiting for a bot run. The others are pending review. I'll let you know when I upload the latest chicken pics. Should be sometime today. PumpkinSky talk 01:08, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

More Thai chickens

I've uploaded nine more.

The original one, which is now officially QI, is here and I did some touch ups on it last night, the legs are much sharper:

The others are here, I cut off their legs in "white head 2" and "white head 3" so I didn't retouch them and won't put up for QI. I know what I plan to do with them and which two I think are best, but if you have the time and inclination, I'd like to know what you think.

I have five others at QIC right now. I think the Buddhist temple ruins one will be successful. Not to sure about the others. Thanks. PumpkinSky talk 22:56, 16 April 2017 (UTC)
Nice shots! Definitely some QI contenders in there... red 1, red 3, and white head 1 have a good shot for sure. I really like the lighting and processing on white head 4 which I think might benefit from a crop. Your technique is solid - it's good to see you aren't afraid to boost your ISO to keep the shutter speed nice and fast. Many folks just learning photography (myself included at one point) try to get away with low ISOs when shooting handheld in overcast conditions, and only end up with lots of motion blur. I really like the temple shot, by the way. That one might stand a chance at FPC if you can deal with the slight chance that the hivemind is in bad mood on the day you nominate it... –Juliancolton | Talk 03:08, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the helpful and positive feedback!!! After I made the above post I nom'd one flower and 4 more temple shots, a different one than the first temple. As for FPC, do you mean the first one: File:Wat Mae Chon ruins 2 -Sukhothai.JPG or one of the ones I just uploaded (Wat Chang Rob)? I keep a list of all my pending noms at the bottom of my user page. Right now there are 10 at QIC that need reviews. I'll crop white head 4. I have to wait to tomorrow to nom more as I hit my quota of 5 this am. PumpkinSky talk 08:23, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Glad to help! And yes, sorry, that's the one. If any of the QICs are still awaiting review this afternoon, I'll head over there and take a look. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:51, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. You've been very kind and helpful. PumpkinSky talk 22:57, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Down to 7 noms. That's ok. I knew they all wouldn't make it. In a bit when the next wiki day rolls around I'll put up 5 of the chickens--the more you mention plus the preening one because IMHO that one's pretty good too. Even when my noms are declined I learn from the comments. See email too if you haven't already. All my Nikon D5300 pics on commons are here: User:PumpkinSky/Uploads/2017, including the Thailand ones. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Juliancolton, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

JC: Please see the four versions of this file I've uploaded. I think it's pretty good except for the upper right corner, especially the two circles that are, what, relfections of something? Note water on the plant. I'd just watered it. I'm good with the first three versions of the file but on the 4th, where I labled it "gimp", I feel I didn't do such a good job of getting rid of the circles. What are these? Any input on how to fix these circles and the upper right corner in general greatly appreciated. I still have all 4 versions of the photo on my computer too. Thanks. Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States – Back for 2017!

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016.

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2017}} to your userpage!

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

logos

Hi. I apologise for doing this, but would you please take a look at this: Special:Contributions/Frha_Ribo. All of the uploads are logos, where the uploader claims them to be own work. I would have nominated them myself, but I am on mobile, and it is very difficult to do from mobile. I apologise again, and thanks a lot in advance. —usernamekiran(talk) 21:07, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

@Usernamekiran: Sorry for the delay. I've been traveling and only just got a chance to take a look at this. I DR'd a few of that user's uploads, but the logos probably don't meet the threshold of originality and so may be able to stay if the source info is corrected. –Juliancolton | Talk 18:17, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
lol. You dont need to apologise :) Yes, I remembered that law after Yann removed my speedy request.
I have just one question though. How should I gain more knowledge/experience regarding file moving, and how should I display/show that I have gained it? As there is no "move discussion venue" here, and my current activity on commons basically originates from enwiki; most of my activity here (which is almost non-existent) revolves around nominating the photos for deletion (which i come across on enwiki), and rarely uploading photos from PD. —usernamekiran(talk) 20:21, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
@Usernamekiran: Well, since you say your activity here is non-existent, that begs the question of whether you really need the file-mover right in the first place. There's a somewhat pervasive train of thought among contributors from large projects that because they're active and trusted with certain rights on their home wikis, they should also have the whole gamut of advanced rights here... just because. Obviously we don't expect Commons to be most peoples' home wiki, but the folks who do spend more time here than elsewhere tend to resent users (mostly from enwiki) resting on the laurels of their accomplishments elsewhere. A nice example is this current RfA. If file renaming is an area in which you'd like to help out, there's plenty of work to be done. Category:Media renaming requests needing target is perpetually backlogged; you can choose suitable target names for the files populated there. Mostly, though, rename requests of your own is the tried-and-true way of demonstrating familiarity with the relevant policies. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:38, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Commons:License reviewer

Hi, I have been a active user on enWikipedia for some time. Of late I have been enjoying my time on commons. I have been going through Flickr files needing human review. I would like to help out here if possible. While trying to review one of the files a warning sign came up while trying to save this file so since then I refrained from doing so. I would like access to this tool if possible. Thank you and I hope this is not incorporate me requesting this on your talk page. FitIndia talk to me 20:54, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

@Fitindia: How do you know the linked file isn't an instance of flickr washing? While the license on flickr is compatible with Commons requirements, the uploader there says it was taken from Instagram, where I can find no evidence that the image has been licensed under CC-BY. –Juliancolton | Talk 18:20, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Juliancolton definitely an error on my part I took a second look and yes it seems to have been lifted and cropped from Instagram without permission. I think I should undo the review and tag it with no permission/license? FitIndia Talk 18:33, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

@Fitindia: Yes, agreed. Unfortunately, I think this shows that a little more experience and caution should be demonstrated before you become a reviewer. You're welcome to submit an application to Commons:License review/requests and try regardless. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:25, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
Juliancolton am going to wait a bit before I do. I think I need some more time here before I request this tool. Thank you for taking the time out to explain. FitIndia Talk 20:42, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Threshold of originality

Hello! I haven't got a lot of experience with Wikimedia Commons, so I want to answer: doesn't these logos of Slovak capital Bratislava meet threshold of originality and can I upload they on Wikimedia Commons? I don't know, where I can write my question, so I wrote to random administrator. :) Thank you very much. --MmichaelDr. (talk) 11:32, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi MmichaelDr.! I'm honored to be the randomly selected admin. :) Those logos are all made of simple text and shapes, and do not appear to pass the originality threshold. Some countries have special exemptions to this rule, or allow more broad copyright protection for simple images, but I can find no evidence here on Commons that Slovokia is one such case (see Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Slovakia). So, good to upload! –Juliancolton | Talk 15:00, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:46, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

Dear Juliancolton

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

Hello Juliancolton,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

Your most memorable shot of 2021

Happy New Year! As always at the beginning of the new year, I'm inviting you to share your most memorable shot of the past year. Which of your photos stood out in 2021? Which image created special memories that you'd like to share with others? On behalf of the Commons Photographers User Group I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best for 2022. Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:25, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Reopening of a deletion request closed in 2009

Hi, I stumbled upon a file that had previously been nominated for deletion but was kept, was later edited making changes that can't eve be explained as a different choice of stance on some linguistic point. At the time the reason it was kept seems to have been related to its use, which is now mostly incidental and replaceable, which I am willing to do. I go into the reasons on the talk page, but I wanted to give a heads up before nominating it for deletion again. (I don't nominate very often, and don't really know the proper etiquette, if there is one.) Cheers Naturalnumber (talk) 09:29, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Renaming Request for Psi1 Draconis

Hi Julian. Thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated and it makes total sense. In the future I will use the other criterion (#1) that you suggested. David.

You're invited to provide input…

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
