Wondering if you had the opportunity next time you were in Colombo Fort to take some photos of the Grand Oriental Hotel? Dan arndt (talk) 05:50, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. Sure, I'll try. Do you have the coordinates for that? Rehman 12:08, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Great work with your recent photos - great value for money. The co-ordinates of GOH is 6.937421 N, 79.845157 E (2 York Street cnr Church Street). Dan arndt (talk) 04:37, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Dan arndt :) Dammit I forgot about this hotel... I have a few more places to cover (such as Achilleion). Will add it to that list, and update that list to UGLK as well. Cheers! Rehman 22:02, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Whilst you are out & about could you take some photos of St. Peter's Church, its right next door to GOH at 26 Church Street(Coordinates: 6°56′15″N 79°50′41″E). So good to have someone who is able to take photos of these sites. Unfortunately most of mine are of tourist sites which there appears to be good coverage on Commons. I'll have to make arrangements for another trip back to Sri Lanka. Dan arndt (talk) 04:37, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Dan. Hope you're doing well. My apologies, as I don't believe I have responded to your last message. Just want to keep you updated that I still have the three places marked to be visited; I haven't forgotten about it. :) Happy Sinhala/Tamil New Year to you! Cheers, Rehman 06:56, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The WikiProject Council[edit]

Hello 👋🏻 Rehman,

I saw that you are a former member of the WikiProject Council but that there currently aren’t any active members to approve new proposals, do you know where I should bring my proposal now?

Sent 📩 from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 08:49, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Donald Trung. My apologies for not being able to give a definitive answer at this moment, but you could start by discussing the same at the corresponding WikiProject in your local wiki. Once you have enough users willing to run it, you could be bold and create the project. I believe listing the project for approval at this moment would be a waste of time, as there is no one to review. Alternatively, you could also start a discussion at the VP as see how it goes. Cheers, Rehman 13:33, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BSicons exÜWBl and exÜWBr[edit]

Sorry, I should have explained in the SD notices. All of the current uses of both redirects are in template-generated rows of images in the Commons gallery, userspace and Wikipedia space, which CommonsDelinker can't replace (as only part of the titles are in the wikitext). Since I was going to move the current redirect targets to the titles currently occupied by the redirects, there would be no visual change. Could you delete the redirects? Thanks, Jc86035 (talk) 11:44, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Thanks for your message. I will do the needful. Rehman 14:27, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alphatest of FileImporter extension[edit]

Hi Rehman,

it was great to meet you on Friday! We discussed the FileImporter extension, and this is me sharing the link with you where we are looking for feedback :)

You can find all info on meta:WMDE_Technical_Wishes/Move_files_to_Commons#Testing_an_alpha_version_of_the_feature

Thank you for your feedback! Lea Voget (WMDE) (talk) 12:55, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lea. It was a pleasure meeting you too! Thank you for the link, I will go through it in detail once I get back home. :-) Best regards, Rehman 16:34, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

I got a note on my page and i am so ignorant of wike really but trying my best. I wanted the old photo taken off as i have recent better and more interesting ones but I know I am probably getting things wrong. A kind person in france pointed out a pic was blurry, she is prob right but they go back to 1952ǃ. You seem very excellent at your work would you give me some advice re the deleting of the pic or anything you can help me with as there is new interest since being on tv thank you so much kareenza ̴Kareenza (talk) 13:52, 12 May 2018

Context It looks like the photo Kareenza is trying to delete is w:File:Terry Hogan in Athens 1956.jpg, but it does not exist in Commons. I assume this user is the person in France. -- SLV100 (talk) 02:56, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy tag on a restored file[edit]

Hi Rehman. You restored File:Terence_Hogan_and_Roz_Hogan_in_Cannes.jpg but left the speedy tag on it. I was going to convert it to a DR, but thought that might derail the current conversation you're having with the uploader. Storkk (talk) 09:24, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Storkk. Thanks for the note. I forgot about those tags. Cheers, Rehman 09:37, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:Lotus Tower - December 2017 (1).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Requesting help with cleanup of SVG translation campaign[edit]

Hello Rehman, as you may be aware, we organised a campaign to translate SVG files into various Indian languages, last month. We are in process of Phase 1 cleanup, which is all of removing duplicates + completely wrong and misleading translations. All the files are listed at c:Commons:SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India/Phase 1 Cleanup, by language organisers and active contributors to respective language Wikipedias. I request to you to help us with the cleanup by deleting the files which are listed sections have names such as "Delete", "For deletion" etc. Kindly let me know if you have any queries. Thanks in advance, KCVelaga (talk · mail) 14:57, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KCVelaga. The above request is complete. Please let me know if I have missed any, or you'd like any restored. All the best for this project. Rehman 15:16, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the rapid action. There are two more left under Bengali and one under Marathi duplicates' sections. Also a template at the end. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 15:21, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
My pleasure, KCVelaga. The missed ones are also deleted. Have a nice evening. Rehman 15:26, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, KCVelaga (talk · mail) 15:31, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
One more is added to Marathi problematic list, and one to Telugu duplicates list. Please delete them as well. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 10:39, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
KCVelaga, done. Rehman 10:42, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please delete File:Laser-symbol-text.te.svg and File:Computational physics diagram.te.svg. They are duplicates of File:Laser-symbol-text-te.svg and File:Computational physics diagram-te.svg respectively. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 09:08, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Photo walk in Stockholm[edit]

It's only a few weeks until Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. I'd like to invite you to the Commons Photographer's photo walk. If you're planning on going to Stockholm in August, please consider joining this event. This is an opportunity to connect with other photographers, have fun together, and explore the beauty of an iconic Scandinavian city… All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:55, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help with mass message[edit]

Hi Rehman, I need your help for sending a mass message for users on Commons. It is basically to communicate a survey (feedback) form to the users listed at Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Results#Overall_uploads_table. I would like to know how should the list be structured, and I can prepare it accordingly. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 13:46, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello KCVelaga. Apologies for the late reply. For structuring the list, you may find more information here or use one of the Mass-mail subscription list shells. Cheers, Rehman 15:35, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But is this going to work on Commons? Should I create a list here or on English Wikipedia? KCVelaga (talk · mail) 04:08, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, after creating, we should be able to copy the source code across to Commons. Rehman 00:31, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The list is at en:Wikipedia:Mass message senders/Shell-STC2019IN, and the message is at Commons:SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India/Feedback survey. I have sent the message to their English Wikipedia talk pages, I request you to send it to their Commons talk pages. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 04:14, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello KCVelaga. Your message has been sent. The shell was imported to User:KCVelaga/Wikipedia:Mass message senders/Shell-STC2019IN. It can be deleted at your request. Cheers. Rehman 05:45, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for the help. I have moved the page from my user subpage to Commons:SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India/Mass message shell. I would like to keep this list as it may be useful for promoting future activities in this area. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 06:00, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Have a great day! Rehman 06:47, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown[edit]

I am not sure I like the changes you made to the subject page. Commons Admins do around 45,000 deletions a month, so even small changes that may look better, but slow us down, are not a good thing. When doing a deletion, we don't search by number -- do any of us remember them all? -- but by reason, so the lines should begin with the reason, not the number.

I am sure, though, that you should not have made such sweeping changes without discussing it with other Admins in advance and specifically involving @Túrelio, JuTa, 1989, Gbawden, Taivo, Sealle, EugeneZelenko, Didym, Ellin Beltz, and Herbythyme: and me, who collectively have done 57% of all deletions in 2020. I'll wait for more input before taking any action. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 22:38, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I personally prefer readable text over acronyms, even if later are used in some projects. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:49, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jameslwoodward and EugeneZelenko. I apologise for that, and thank you for taking the time to provide feedback here. I've made that change only on the basis that the links already exist, and that the change would make each line 1 character shorter. I should have discussed this. I have now reverted myself, and will post a proposal soon. Kind regards, Rehman 02:23, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with others and I confess, that I still do not remember deletion rationale acronyms – I see them every day, but I cannot remember them. Taivo (talk) 08:07, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I can't remember anything by numbers, it would be best to use text. While I have someone technical's attention, why on earth is there a checkbox for "notify users" on the copyright violation form? Notifying users is required, that should not be there waiting for us to click or unclick it, I think it should be automatic. That checkbox wastes more of my time than any single other clickbox on any website that I use everywhere. It was also added - as far as I know - without discussion at some point in the last couple of years. Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:25, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on May 30, 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I’d like to invite you to our group’s first Virtual Meeting on Saturday, May 30, 2020. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Please take a look at the meeting page and add your name to the list of participants if you’re planning to attend.

Hope to see you in a week! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:59, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi Rehman, please explain this? Thanks. --A.Savin 12:57, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi A.Savin. The photo does not depict the Weheragala Reservoir, but the dam. I have now created a separate category and added the file to it. Cheers, Rehman 13:12, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
A.Savin, I'm going to revert this and this. Reservoir categories are usually the subcategory of dam categories, as reservoirs are created by the dam. Hence it should be the other way around, in this case. Rehman 14:41, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I don't care much what way around it shall be (for my logical thinking though, the dam is a part of the reservoir's infrastructure and so it is its subcat), but then definitely it should be the upper category connected with its location (Yala N.P., Monaragala District). --A.Savin 14:58, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes correct, the other categories are fine. Cheers, Rehman 15:02, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:00, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 00:17, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your most memorable shot 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Rehman

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello Rehman,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:52, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. siwiki[edit]

Hi! I hear you can read the language on siwiki. I have noticed si:ප්‍රවර්ගය:Wikipedia license migration candidates and most of the files seems to be uploaded by si:පරිශීලක:Student.IRQUE.UOC. It looks like a joined account or some sort of but uploading files from multiple persons.

I like to move files to Commons but I'm not sure if the files are okay for Commons or not. Perhaps you could have a look at it? If they are not okay perhaps they should be deleted. If they are okay I can create the configuration file for FileImporter so it is easy to move files to Commons. --MGA73 (talk) 11:23, 13 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MGA73. Simply put, the vast majority of files at siwiki are copyvios and other junk, with the majority of the remaining "good" files sitting unsourced. A little more than a year ago, I had attempted to sort this out myself, but someone there likes to keep things the way it is. You can find part of the discussion here (it is mostly blunt comments referring to discussions elsewhere). I did want to configure the FileImporter too, but opening the floodgates for junk to be mass-transferred from siwiki to Commons seemed like a bad idea to me, at least until there is some major overhaul at siwiki itself. And speaking of overhaul, if an experienced editor, who can speak Sinhalese, as is from Sri Lanka, is not welcomed to help at siwiki (where there is barely anyone else who will fit the bill due to the near-zero user activity), I don't know how cleaning that wiki would ever be possible. Rehman 05:13, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rehman! All wikis must follow the licensing policy. So in worst case it should be possible to make a request at meta and then stewards could either initiate a mass deletion or appoint users to help clean up. But I will go read and comment. And lets see if it works. --MGA73 (talk) 05:35, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look and the admin claim that he can delete all the bad files if someone tag them and provide a good reason. So I will mark a few files for deletion and see what happens. --MGA73 (talk) 05:55, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers, MGA73. I just didn't have any patience to accept doubling the work for no valid reason - especially since we're talking about a large number of files. But nevertheless, good luck! Rehman 07:48, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I made a post at si:විකිපීඩියා:කෝපි_කඩේ_(miscellaneous)#Cleaning_up_files. If files are deleted when tagged then perhaps do not see it as double work but having an extra pair of eyes checking.
I think that the templates en:Template:Free media and en:Template:Non-free media etc. should be added to all license templates. Then it is easy to make a list of all free files and who uploaded them. If uploader is still active it is possible to save the files if uploader help clean up. But old accounts are not easy to save so perhaps the solution is to delete all the old files. It is probably not easy to have community to agree on that but if we can show that copyvios are ignored then meta can do something.
But lets see. Perhaps we can find a solution. After all many of the photos could be taken by the uploaders. So perhaps we could keep those that does not look like internet files. --MGA73 (talk) 07:58, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Is there some invisible charachter at si:සැකිල්ල:නො-නිදහස් මාධ්‍ය and si:ප්‍රවර්ගය:සියළු නො-නිදහස් මාධ්‍ය? The category does not behave well in my search for files. --MGA73 (talk) 17:57, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me that copyvios do get deleted now. So perhaps you could comment. --MGA73 (talk) 09:39, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
About FileImporter it is possible to add templates like {{UOC}} to the block list. That way FileImporter will refuse to move files with that template. That should exclude most of the problematic files. Will that make it easier? Then if you check files you can move the good files and nominate the bad files for deletion. I would suggest that you first check the users that is still active because then you can ask them for information if anything is missing. --MGA73 (talk) 17:20, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again! I checked status on si.wiki and circa 400 files have now been deleted. That is a good start. Have you been checking any files lately? If yes do they get deleted or ignored? --MGA73 (talk) 14:14, 7 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

De-adminship warning (Feb 2022)[edit]

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Rehman. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights and also additional permissions (bureaucrat/oversighter/checkuser/interface-admin), if any, on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2022 before 11th March, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Save the date: Commons Photographers meeting next week[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

  • Photography in Nigeria
  • Photographing vehicles
  • I started printing my images – here’s what I've learned so far…

If you'd like to participate in this event, please consider signing up on this page. Also, if you'd like to present at one of the next meetings, please send me a quick note. Sharing your experiences and learnings with others can make a huge difference!

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your picture File:British shorthair with calico coat (1).jpg, and I wanted to ask how sure you were this is a cat of the British Shorthair breed. As the features of the cat are very different from the breed standard. If this cat is not a cat of the British Shorthair breed, but a short-haired British domestic cat please categorise it in Category:Cats of the United Kingdom and Category:Domestic short-haired cats. File:UG-LK Photowalk - Cinnamon Red - 2017-03-12.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

De-adminship warning[edit]

Dear Rehman, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2024 before 13th March (UTC), and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months, if you fail to do so you will automatically lose your rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you! -- CptViraj (talk) 20:54, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Just curious, what was the reason for the deletion of the 8 September 2017 file? [1] -- Asclepias (talk) 00:31, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't the DR page have a normal closure? [2] -- Asclepias (talk) 00:56, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to chime in and comment on this too. It looks like you got fooled by the new blurry image that the uploader uploaded over an older, higher-quality file. IronGargoyle (talk) 03:20, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi both. Thanks for spotting, you're right. Looking closer though, it seems like the original is an edited one? Regardless, feel free to restore if you feel it's worthy of a DR. Cheers, Rehman 04:50, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
