Block[edit]

Hi,

Have you seen this yet. I don't really believe the are the pr agency. Do you?

Cheers, Sterkebaktalk 10:57, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks I'd missed it. So I've posted for now & I have no problem unblocking them as long as they comply? If I miss it you are welcome to revert my block on that basis. Thanks a lot --Herby talk thyme 11:42, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely one to watch. I would like to know how they plan to use them. If it is a PR company there might be "scope" questions. --Herby talk thyme 13:52, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think the tools would be inside the scope. But if it are all thumbs... We are better of without them. I will keep a eye on him. Sterkebaktalk 13:58, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Socks[edit]

I've looked at Glueon's edits earlier. I think it likely that this user is Jvolkblum, but I failed to ask for a check because I'd forgotten about this user, mostly because the contributions are more responsible than most of the Jvolkblum output. Thanks for the pointer to Originalspicy; I am sure that is Jvolkblum -- and I just now reported the user for a check over at EN (see EN:Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jvolkblum). --Orlady (talk) 14:14, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all your work. I'm not surprised to hear about the open proxies, based on the history. Speaking of open proxies, I think 217.20.127.243 (talk contribs WHOIS RBL tools luxo's crossblock block user block log (apparently in Germany) is this same person, based on the IP's sole edit. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping an eye on Glueon. --Orlady (talk) 15:27, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I ran across another one: Mcginty (talk contribs Luxo's SUL deleted contribs logs block user block log ). I noticed Jvolkblum-like behavior in this user's sole edit at EN, found that the user account there had been auto-created after registering here and that the user had already been blocked there. Contributions here seem to be mostly old postcards of Larchmont, New York, which is apparently next door to New Rochelle and is a secondary interest of Jvolkblum's. (I don't like the game of "Whack-a-Mole.") --Orlady (talk) 16:23, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another new mole to whack: R.O.Thorneybush (talk contribs Luxo's SUL deleted contribs logs block user block log ) -- This is a new user who uploaded more than 3 dozen images of New Rochelle today. The image formats are diverse, but all that I have checked are claimed to be either self-made or from a "personal collection." A new EN user called Wasdone (no Commons account) has started inserting some of the images into articles at EN. --Orlady (talk) 18:26, 31 October 2008 (UTC) PS - Wasdone has already been blocked at EN, along with several other new names. See w:Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jvolkblum. --Orlady (talk) 18:29, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's me again, with another episode of New Rochelle Whack-a-mole... I think UnclePhilB (talk contribs Luxo's SUL deleted contribs logs block user block log ) is another sock. This user uploaded several New Rochelle images a few days ago -- several scans of old published images and one color photo that is claimed as self-made. An IP user at Wikipedia 69.10.33.195 (talk contribs WHOIS RBL tools luxo's crossblock block user block log -- that's a "my privacy tools" anonymizing IP -- has inserted several of these images into articles. I'm still looking around; there may be more... --Orlady (talk) 03:59, 7 November 2008 (UTC) Another is UCS508 (talk contribs Luxo's SUL deleted contribs logs block user block log ) -- This user has uploaded images here of a type that Jvolkblum has added in the past; this one has also edited New Rochelle articles at EN, and I have asked for a checkuser there. --Orlady (talk) 04:15, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here -- did you un-check the "Leave a redirect behind" option when moving?  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:23, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - what did I get wrong??? I deleted it & then realised it might have been intended as a user page. Maybe I'll learn eventually :) --Herby talk thyme 07:57, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing "wrong" - so you undeleted it, and moved it elsewhere. But normally that leaves a redirect behind. If there had been a redirect, then when it got deleted that would appear in the log - it doesn't. So there wasn't a redirect that got deleted yet the page is redlinked. So I'm guessing you had unchecked the "leave redirect" option. Until bugzilla:16121 is fixed (and even then?) that's perhaps something that should be done only for vandalism. It will be very confusing to people (even me!) since only global rollbackers and stewards have access to that function currently. It makes it seem like pages are disappearing for no reason unless you already know about the new feature.
So... long story short is "Nothing wrong but please use that feature for reverting pagemove vandalism to keep the dense ones from getting too confused" :D  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:39, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info Mike. Thinking generally - point taken. On this one I'd decided it was one less action to delete the redirect and the stuffed up anyway as I got the name wrong. Reviewing it I reckon it was out of scope (advertising in some sense a copyright game) so it got moved the the right place with a redirect & then got deleted. Probably not me neatest actions :) Regards --Herby talk thyme 10:35, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please check the CheckPage[edit]

Hello Herby, I saw you are active, can you please check the CheckPage, I requested for trusted user but it seems no Administrators reviewed the page from 22 September, thanks in advance.   ■ MMXXtalk  14:22, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - not an aspect of the project I know much about I'm afraid. Equally, at present I'm short of time. It may be worth trying Kanonkas who seems to be active there. Sorry & thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:12, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with Kanonkas[edit]

This user managed to blocked my account Guest 0 (talk · contribs) to set me up as a sockpuppet of 75.47.0.0/16 (talk · contribs) which is unjustifed and i knew that Kanonkas would find out i'm using multiple accounts to evade a indefinite block. I would call this a malicious behavior problem. --75.47.194.235 19:22, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know you found out that these two accounts where sockpuppets hovever theses where droppelganger accounts.

Thanks - I see your behaviour as malicious. As you agree you are Guest 0 - blocked --Herby talk thyme 19:26, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have let a sentence as a description, because the BD genre must not been mistaken with the anglo-saxon comics. Many anglophone people do not know the term. --Pah777 (talk) 17:50, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undelete[edit]

Hi,

i have seen that you where active on the undelete page. But is that page always kind of backlog? I have been busy with handling old en solved reqeust, so the are closed. But is it normal that there are reqeust from september still waiting?

Cheers, Sterkebaktalk 08:18, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In a word "yes". I actually try & avoid the page! I'm not an expert on licensing - I know an obvious copyvio if I see one but some of the finer points I do not know well enough. All I try and do is clear the obvious ones so that they are archived so that others can see what they are doing. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:54, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The page has been deleted again, because the files it contained had been themselves deleted. Can you restore the page again, I will definitely add as many files as possible. --Pah777 (talk) 16:28, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have some images ready to put on it? I can undelete it for you. But place images on it asp. Oké? Sterkebaktalk 16:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - I'll undelete but can you get an image on there straightway - does not even need to be the right one :) --Herby talk thyme 17:05, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks herby i was waiting for a respons :) Sterkebaktalk 17:32, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Saudi Arabia PD images[edit]

It seems to me that user Hamooz has uploaded a whole pile of images stating they're PD-Saudi Arabia (25 years+), where it looks like the images are no older than say last year (these are the ones that are called simialr to Image:Eed1fbf5f1.jpg). Now they could be "PD-User" or similar, but the site he gives as a source is no longer available. (And all images have borders, a watermark and need renaming too hmph.) I was going to put them up for deletion as we have no way of checking? What do you think? As always thanks for your help :) -- Deadstar (msg) 14:22, 5 November 2008 (UTC) Deleting them would be a pity though, they are OK looking images in general, although I have no idea what they are about... [reply]

Hum.... As you say, undoubtedly the licensing is questionable. Not least because if you follow the link to the permission here for example you get This domain may be for sale. Buy this Domain :). Likewise for the author & source. I'd say that they were speedily deletable personally (which as you say is a pity in some ways). Certainly not keepable with that (lack of) info. Regards --Herby talk thyme 14:34, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*sigh* I've created a deletion request for all of them. Hope all is well. -- Deadstar (msg) 15:05, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at how long ago the user contributed to the project I wonder if it was his website at one stage? Might be worth looking at one of the "way back" type archives of the internet though I still think there would be issues with these contribs. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:59, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DevaShard Cover[edit]

Hi Herby,

I'm assuming this is how I communicate with you.

Regarding the cover image for DevaShard (the graphic novel series published by our company - Fluid Friction Comics), I have uploaded it twice and it has been deleted twice. As we are 100% owners of this image I am not sure why this would be. The very same image is present on at over 100 comic and bookshop sales websites across the internet and a large number of review, portal sites, blogs and others, so it is hardly a protected image. You have advised that I write to OTRS and I have done so, though I have no idea what exactly I am supposed to say to them or again what the issue is. Ideally it would be good if you could give me a clear breakdown of what requirements Wikimedia Commons has and anything I need to supply to meet them and I will be happy to do so.

Thank you,

Spencer (email: spencer@fluidfriction.com)

Open Proxy[edit]

Hi,

I have seen you blocking open proxy's and zombi ips. Can you tell me how to check that. Maybe i could help.

Cheers, Sterkebaktalk 15:03, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the offer, however - usually - these are IPs mentioned on the CU list which have been the source of trouble/vandals etc cross wiki.
In practice some perfectly good editing comes from proxies here & on other wikis so I only block those with trouble somewhere. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:13, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oke, Thnks for your answer. Sterkebaktalk 15:21, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletions[edit]

Hey Herby,

You deleted 4 of my jpegs and I was just wondering why (I'm a neebie here and want to be sure to follow the rules.)

(I'm not even sure if I asked this question in the right place!)

Cheers,

Phat Lemur

Hi - yes right place.
I deleted them as they are screenshots of films which are copyrighted to the producer of the film & hence cannot be freely licensed for use on Commons. The others need to go too. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:56, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair point but how do I prove that I work for the IMAX Corporation and was given these images by the Production team for the purpose of posting them? Cheers again for holding my hand through this. -PL

Aaah - different issue. In that case can you look at OTRS. This allows the copyright holder to freely license them for any use and us to then host the images (which would be fine). The email will have to come from the license holder & be checked. You will then get a number which can be placed on the images. Should work out fine then. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:05, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will look into it, thanks.

- Phat Lemur

Hello again.

I've just spoken with a member of the production team and they have informed me that the files I am uploading are NOT screenshots but are merely modified 'word' documents, therefore relieving the need for any copyright permissions. These images (that have been changed to jpeg format so they could more easily be uploaded) are not proprietary and are the equivalent of typing out each persons name on the wiki page.

With this in mind, am I allowed to now upload these jpegs?

Thanks again.

Phat Lemur

I understand what you are saying. I think you are probably moving into a grey area of licensing - certainly outside my expertise. Feel free to post at the help desk I guess. Where are you planning to use these images?
They do need to be within our scope. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:40, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey,

I just want to use these images on this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX_DMR_Credits

It's mostly so the folks who have worked on these films can use this as a reference/credit.

It's also an attempt to build a record of the people who do this kind of work since there is none currently (our credits don't end up on the DVDs and imdb refuses to give many of us credits on their site for some reason.

Cheers,

PL

I understand what you are saying. I'll certainly not delete any more for now. However I think it may well be that Wikipedia will consider the page out of their scope looking at it. I wish you well - cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:46, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DevaShard[edit]

Thanks for the note Herby, I appreciate your detailed explanation. I must say the whole copyright thing has now made me quite nervous and now I am thinking that I should just use one of our alternate covers that we do not have copyrighted (as the Simon Bisley cover cost money to purchase and is our main cover we did of course copyright it). If I put the Simon Bisley cover on Wikipedia would it revoke copyright for that jpeg image or for the original art itself?

User:玉 而富's uploads[edit]

Hi Herby, I've been putting User:玉 而富's into categories and noticed your messages to him, which by the way are probably falling on deaf ears as he doesn't seem to understand English. I just came by to say that individual images are encyclopaedic and fall within scope, its just that he's uploaded lots of images of similar objects when eight or nine of each type would have been more than adequete for our use. One of his pictures of a pig-dragon is now being used on en-wiki, and once I've had a go at creating an article on the Jade zhang sceptre, a half a dozen or so of the images will be useful for illustrating variations in form. So if you feel that you really do need to delete his images can you do so after useful/illustrative ones have been selected.

I guess you're curious as to what exactly the images are of? User:玉 而富 seems to be a collector/dealer in jade, with some modern items, and some much older artifacts, his uploads are pictures of his collection/stock to share/show.

Would you like me to translate your message to him?KTo288 (talk) 10:07, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've written a draft of a message to 玉 而富, you can review it here with my own and a google languages translation. It can be posted once you are sure that I have not misrepresented your position. KTo288 (talk) 21:34, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thank you for your attention to my Jvolkblum‎-related deletion requests, and your advice about speedy-delete requests in the future. However, I think it is appropriate to point out that the reason why I nominated all of those images for deletion (including the group nominations) is because that's what I was advised to do after an earlier request on the administrator's noticeboard. --Orlady (talk) 14:54, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Diti’s RFA[edit]

Thank you for your trust

Dear Herbythyme,
^v^
^v^
Thank you for your support on my request for adminship, here at Commons. Now that I am a new sysop, I plan on starting small, closing obvious (to my eye) deletion requests at first, getting bolder with experience as and when my contributions here intensify. As a contributor, I look forward acquiring professional photography/video skills and equipment, that will allow me, one day, to proudly help Commons to be better (I would like to obtain my Master's degree while in Antarctica, more free videos and photos of this place would be truly great). Waiting for this moment to happen, let me address you once again my warmest thanks for your trust and your support in my successful request for adminship, that received 100% of  support votes.
I do feel the tools given to me will be useful for the project as well as, obviously, for me. And even for you: besides questions regarding templates (about parser functions for example) and licensing, I will be henceforth there at any moment to perform administrative tasks like deletions, interventions on protected pages, and the like. You just have to ask me on my talk page or by IRC at #wikimedia-commons, and I will normally be glad to honor your request.
Diti the penguin 16:12, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your intervention. Would it be possible to clean the history of the page, since it contains personal information about the guy? Additional question, how is it possible to request the intervention of an admin, besides individual requests? I had spotted the problem, but didn't know where to ask. --Eusebius (talk) 16:40, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done? Is that what you wanted removed? Most pages have some garbage in the history.
Yes, thanks. Although your last edit was probably interesting.
As to admin attention feel free to post on the admin boards (the series in linked from here with "sub boards"), that will usually get a fairly quick response. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:45, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sources, Categories and puzzlements[edit]

Thanks for your hint on categories. When I am more sure of my feet I will explore the "HotCats" thing.

There are things I have not worked out yet. The "source" field is a puzzle. I uploaded all but one of the images on "Category:County flags of the United Kingdom", each sourced from the Flag Institute but converted on my machine to .PNG as .GIF doesn't display well. Each is still tagged with a "This file is missing source information." message threatening deletion. It is odd when the "Source" field in each case does give the source and the page explaining the images are free from copyright-free. Maybe I have got the terminology wrong, or the tag is a left-over from when I had not given the URL link.

I am not sure of the "Search" criteria either. ("Yorkshire flag" comes up with the various rival designs published before an official one was registered, but not the one I have recently uploaded, with the plain description "Yorkshire flag".) Maybe the search algorithm waits to see that an image is not taken off.

If you know the answers, please put my mind at rest!

Logo deletion[edit]

Hi Herby,

you deleted an image on an article on Symbio (in French); I just wanted to make sure we had indeed infringed any copyright? In fact Thomson is the owner of the product, even if the designer who designed the product for Thomson is a separate company. I am working with the Marketing team of Thomson (just behind my own desk): if needed, we could insert an image that comes from our own database. Would that be better?

thanks a lot, (and it's good to see that admins like you are active and efficient!)

fabien

Good day Fabien. You might want to take a look at OTRS where you e-mail that permission. If you still have any questions feel free to ask me, or Herby. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 14:18, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion (logo)[edit]

Hi,

You've deleted an image I'd uploaded (IIM_I_-_logo.gif) and the reason is given as Copyright Violation. Can you tell me the Hows and Whys please? I'm from the Media & Public Relations Committee of IIM Indore and so would believe I have the rights to use the image. Not too aware of wiki's rules though.

For such images to be hosted here licensing must be via OTRS. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 18:17, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herby,

You must recieve this kind of comment/enquiry all the time by the looks of it (yes i glance through your mail)but i do have to know, WHY did you delete the content i uploaded about holidaycity.com. I have been careful about wording it in the proper way so that it will not be misconstrued, my aim is to EXPLAIN, DESCRIBE, not blatantly advertise! Maybe you're overdoing it a bit Herby? You do admit that you're 'prejudiced', 'tend to delete rather quickly', 'make mistakes' etc. etc (and that you appreciate people pointing them out to you) and maybe this time too you've jumped the gun without reading the whole article to the very end to actually judge deletion should commence. I know a lot of articles come your way but you should also spare some thought for the ones who spent time creating them before jumping on the panic button. Herby, i'm trying to be nice here, i can't help the fact that holidaycity.com is an internet based company or that its name comes with a .com attached. It is not to promote another website!!!!! Would you be so kind as to tell me how i can make it herbythyme-friendly? Hoping for any early reply (i'm on assignment here!) Thanks herby, have a good day.

I can't actually find (in the time available to me) what deletion you are enquiring about. However most of the misunderstandings here come about because people fail to realise that Commons only purpose is to host images (& similar) for use on other project. As such anything textual will get deleted. If you give me a link to the page concerned (or sign in) I could be more precise. --Herby talk thyme 08:29, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Herby,

Thanks for your quick reply, it clears up a lot of things. Actually i uploaded the content on holidaycity.com on my user page and since i'm pretty new at this i don't really know how it went into Commons ( is it the default page for entries or something?)or you wandered into my page accidentally (since you say you're a 'wiki wanderer' and then felt wiki-challenged) I suppose i really should read up more before i attempt to upload content again. By the way, your images are pretty ok. Do you allow people to download them? If you come across my articles again and feel the urge to delete them, i'll be grateful if you tell me why, first. Thanks again Herby!

Daisy

In the end that is using Common to advertise - your user page is a personal page not one to deal with a website. In practice you will be blocked if you do that again I'm afraid.
All images on Commons are freely licensed for anyone to use as long as they attribute them to the original creator.
Anything that is out of scope/unlicensed will be deleted by an admin. Whether you are informed before or after is a matter of timing. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:25, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Herby, I appreciate all your comments, i really do, but at the risk of sounding terribly ignorant ( and i know i am to an admin guy like you who has 18 months doing this behind him) i did NOT go anywhere near COMMONS. I am only here in COMMONS because you're here and i hunted you down because you were the one who deleted my page. Anyway i used the user page (connected to encyclopedia!)to upload content because it said i could experiment all by myself (without bothering anyone else, was what it meant to me)Anyway i will read up everything before i attempt again and really i must insist that i am not dealing with another website nor was and is my attention to promote one. i was all the time in encyclopedia, i got to know about commons and drop by here to look for you. But thanks for understanding anyway Herby good day. Daisy

Favour on Flickr[edit]

Hi, I recently tried uploading an image, but I was unable to because of its 3MB + file size. I had to optimise its quality, which isn't very good now. Could you please download Image:High Street, Exeter, England, ca. 1895.jpg on Flickr and upload the high resolution version? Jolly Janner (talk) 00:18, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not the kind of thing I do & no time any way at present. --Herby talk thyme 08:21, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, i only wanted to say that this logo is owned by my sister, so why did you deleted it? --Pavlovskyjakub (talk) 15:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Avril Lavigne[edit]

Hi, curious about these deletions: [6]. I was the one who approved the images. They looked OK on flickr - could you explain? Thanks. How do you turn this on (talk) 21:09, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably because user:Leonardo.stabile added {{Flickrvio}} to them, you may want to ask Leonardo why that was added. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 00:30, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Quick answer - looks like Flickr washing puppetry. There have been quite a few questionable Lavigne uploads over time. User is blocked (on a CU basis) and the project CU have the info. I guess from your point of view (How do you turn this on|How do you turn this on) a case of getting to know some of the questionable areas of the project! PROOF - http://www.flickr.com/photos/willvideoforfood/3078515620/ QUOTE by AUTHOR "Nalts headshot- public domain. Creative commons. Whatever."

For the one I deleted the history shows that there was no Flickr link (per the bot) and it was then tagged as a copyvio. I see the one you provide a link to has now got both the link & the license is fine.
In passing please sign your posts. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:29, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It is not silly, you cannot attack especially while you're an admin. Now please add your comment and don't close the discussion before less than 24 hours. Thank you.--OsamaK 17:57, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please tell me you're joking. That's the most obvious closure I've seen in a long time.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:21, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, maybe it should be reopened and each case examined separately. Image:136624726 0da44d68fe emo.jpg seems to be a rather precise filename to me. Yes, of course I'm joking Finn Rindahl (talk) 18:57, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not joking, OK? We don't need 402 duplicate files while other ways to do same task is available. Deleting the duplicate, redirect its page and protect it will do the same and will meet our policy.--OsamaK 02:07, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Madness. However I've rolled back my closure - feel free to have any discussion you like. --Herby talk thyme 08:16, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Odd (ru) issue[edit]

Looks like Russian Wikipedia problems propagated on Commons. AFAIK, User:Deutscher Friedensstifter banned there by ArbCom decision.

Image:A Blood Wulfonson.jpg, Image:Vasiliev small.jpg are clearly supposed to insult some Russian Wikipedia admins. Image:Complain-AK.gif is supposed to discredit ArbCom.

However, I'm not sure what to do with cross-wiki problems. May be stewards should be involved?

EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:12, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I took Eugene's comments as correct & so deemed them attack images in some form. To prevent further disruption I blocked User:Reino_Həlismaa for a short period.
I guess we need to establish that they are an impersonator of User:Stoljaroff (in which case the account needs locking at the very least). User Udacha.jpg appears to be involved to so that has gone now (I apologise if I've got anything wrong). --Herby talk thyme 17:25, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About ME issue[edit]

Just wondering, about Mutter Erde issue:
Could it be logical to call for an admin vote somewhere on the commons page, (admin board or the place where RFA are handled?) on the decision to take with Mutter Erde.
Imo, Diti should have blocked ME until a true decision should have been taken.
If you have any opinion about it?
Esby (talk) 13:30, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you may mean Diti should not have blocked etc.
That said I had contemplated blocking ME anyway based on what was being said but I don't feel we had reached a real conclusion across the community. In practice getting admins to vote would be wrong - ME has annoyed/upset far more of them than anyone else & his aggression is directed towards admins largely (sadly).
Personally I think ME should be blocked for a period (tho not a year) but I would prefer to see an indication that he even begins to understand the problems his behaviour is causing. Let's see what others have to say. --Herby talk thyme 13:46, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well my opinion is that the decision is not to be taken by a restricted numbers of admins in a given IRC channel. Even if the decision is or might be appropriate, this leads to cabalism acccusations. For me, IRC is to react properly when urgent problems arise, honestly, I don't know if Mutter Erde qualify the urgency or not, but I can only agree as extreme decision here to a temp ban until an appropriate decision is taken. That does not imply the user must not be banned or must be banned for a given period of time, that just means the decision should be taken on Commons and not elsewhere. Your edit summary: "to the hounds"[edit]

Hi, I am not quite certain what it means, but you edit summary here does not make a pleasant impression. It does not seem civil, and it could be read as a personal attack. And here you seem rather understanding of mattbuck's swearing and shouting at me. Double standards or doing as you preach? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 19:49, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We have a saying in the UK which may be appropriate Pieter - "If the cap fits, wear it". If you feel your behaviour has been less than pleasant then I may be referring to you, if not then it cannot possibly refer to you.
Equally if you feel I am uncivil I am certainly happy to apologise for that. I love Commons & have experienced some great interaction with other users here - it saddens me if anything or anyone creates a change for the worse in that atmosphere.
I would probably point you to another UK saying about the pot who, having been on the fire for a long time, refers to the kettle as being blackened. --Herby talk thyme 10:22, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Imágenes de guitarrón chileno[edit]

Hola. Hi Herby, I'm afraid my latest contributions may make be blocked. It's OK. I consider it to be the fight for the right cause, and I am not sorry about anything. I would hate to leave without thanking you for your understanding and your help in the very important for me matter. May I please ask you to notice that in no way this message is written to get your support, if I am blocked? I know you should do what you should do in such situations, and it's OK, but once again I'd like to thank you for everything! Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 06:39, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It certainly will not be me that is blocking you. You are a good contributor to Commons & I do not block such people (unless it is a very last resort).
ME is so busy being aggressive towards people he seems to have declined to notice that I was someone who was actually considering unblocking him. However the behaviour over the issue is so unpleasant I'm not going to be involved with it.
Best wishes & regards --Herby talk thyme 09:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Herby! I absolutely agree with your assessment of ME behaviour toward you. I have not found anything in your posts that could have caused such a behaviour. You did try to unblock him. Once you told me that you do not pay so much attention to some users being unpleasant toward you (I am still sorry I was once) because "it is part of the job". So, may I please ask you do not get upset because of this and enjoy your Holidays? Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 13:21, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Best wishes to you too & thanks.
It is strange as I actually think that the "hate" stuff should go too, however what I understand & ME does not is that consensus is not about who shouts most! Some agree with me on those images, some do not, so I guess, sadly to me, they stay for now - shouting at people about anything rarely changes their minds.
Regards --Herby talk thyme 14:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot thank you enough for sharing my opinion about the images.
I will never forget how few years ago I was standing next to the glass case in Auschwitz, the glass case with hair from the floor to the ceiling. Next to this case there was the sign: "The hair are human hair, mostly women." After people were gassed to death their hair was used to make mattresses. I did not think I would cry looking at hair, but I did, I just did... There was another case with the kids shoes, and then there was a documentary about the liberation of Auschwitz. On the screen small kids, mostly twins, who survived the horror, showed their small hands with the numbers that were tattooed by fascists... Sorry for the sad memories. I simply would like people to understand better what I see, when I look at the images.
Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:58, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I had no intentional of coming on here today & certainly not of posting. However I can think of no other postings on any of my talk pages over 2 and a half years on Foundation projects that was more important to me than yours.
On line communities seem to often overlook an understanding of the real world and I think this illustrates the case well. My son visited a camp last year - I learnt much from his almost complete silence on the visit, sometime mere words are quite inadequate. I certainly hope to visit one sometime.
However man's inhumanity to man spans times and places and continues in much of the world today.
The idea that there is any justification for "hate" images eludes me - however I am well aware that that is an emotional reaction and those who seek to keep such things have rationality on their side (& I remain enough a scientist to respect that I guess).
In the end your view of this has touched me deeply & I thank you for that. Maybe others will be touched too. My thanks & best wishes - maybe 2009 will bring at least some peace in some parts of the world where folk appear not to care for their fellow human beings. --Herby talk thyme 10:22, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm deeply touched by your response. There was an old Russian movie where a teen hero said: "Happiness - it is, when you are understood". Your response has given me this Happiness, and I thank you for this!No matter what happens in the feature I'll always will be grateful to Commons that I got to know you! Best wishes.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:50, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I understand the sentiment. We often speak, sometimes people hear but it is far rarer that they listen & understand. ("hear" & "listen" are quite different in many way to me!).

I said once that the images I uploaded to Commons will continue my fight even after I'm gone.
Then in the very same day I got blocked (I consider the block to be fair. I did disrupt Commons schedule) my image was selected as picture of the day.
Yet I found even a stranger coincidence.
There are thousands upon thousands images on Commons, but from all the beautiful Common images this guy
selected only one, my image, to be displayed on his user page on Swedish Wikipedia.
I decided, I'll let him have it!--Mbz1 (talk) 16:56, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
