First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Sorry but my bot isn't magic :-) The magic box with all the licenses is available only before the upload, not after because it's part of the Special:Upload page, I can't hack my bot to add a box in every image's editing field ;-) Thanks by the way for the message (suggestions are always appreciated). Hi[edit]

I'm reading myself into the CU case at present & will block one or two accounts shortly (thanks). However I lack the background that you obviously have so could you just take a peak at these contribs - geographically related by probably nothing else. Equally this caught my eye due to the description rather than anything else.

Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 10:20, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - Originalspicy now blocked. Do you feel that we should block Glueon based on your (extensive) knowledge of this socking (didn't realise the page was that long on en wp :)). Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 14:25, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
+ I see this one on the en wp page - they are here too.....? --Herby talk thyme 14:26, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And then the brain kicked in :) - Duachia blocked, Glueon being the outstanding one I think now. Feel free to let me know though if you feel I'm missing any. One lot of accounts were on an open proxy which I blocked regarding a different matter earlier this week for your info. --Herby talk thyme 14:53, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent aren't they! That one is blocked & I think we should probably block Glueon who cropped up again in connection with that. I've also done MiltyMilt per the en wp block basically. There actually could be more but without contributions to look at I might well end up blocking someone incorrectly. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:32, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
+ BTW - if you get bored :) - feel free to run the SUL tool on the blocked names on en wp. If you find any with Commons accounts that are unblocked I'll happily take a look. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 16:36, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - that user is blocked & another proxy here & on en wp 84.16.230.17 which "cropped up" while I was looking :). I'll dig a bit more on the other one mentioned here but it is on a short block here & has been blocked briefly on en wp.

I guess - obviously - let me know if I can help. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:15, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You don't want me to get bored do you :) If you check my block log you will see four users & two IPs which seem to be it for now. Hear from you again I'm sure! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:55, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions[edit]

I guess with so many things we all work a little differently - it is a wiki :).

I avoid DRs like the plague - I always get them wrong! However I do watch speedies quite a bit. If I can help you know where I am, thanks for your work too. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:59, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category ping pong[edit]

Please see this. BTW, thank you for your support at COM:ADMIN.  ;) Wknight94 talk 11:04, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Woops, never mind the first part. I didn't notice that Ebyabe's move requests were from 2008, not 2009. I read your move request closer and noticed that you made reference to that. I originally thought they were happening simultaneously... Wknight94 talk 11:09, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing how much an 8 can resemble a 9, isn't it? Actually, I think the main reason those didn't get moved earlier was that were so many hierarchical levels of categories in Florida needing attention. I failed to tag all of the local categories, and whoever did the move failed to find all of the categories I had tagged. Anyway, they're done now. --Orlady (talk) 13:14, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I still sign the occasional check with "2007" so I'm hopeless... There are still some straggler images/categories as seen here. Wknight94 talk 14:44, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! All fixed (or fix requested), except for Category:Registered Historic Places in Wayne County, Michigan, which is a phantom. --Orlady (talk) 18:34, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category:National Register of Historical Places in X[edit]

Hey Orlady, I know you do a lot of work with NRHPs on enwp, I just had a quick question about categorization here on Commons. I've noticed that categories like Category:National Register of Historic Places in Sacramento County, California are a part of Category:Sacramento County, California, then the images that have the former NRHP category, also tie into the Sacramento County category in another direction (either by being a member of Category:Sacramento, California or one of the other city categories which tie into the county category). So I guess I'm just questioning the whole system, it seems like we're getting files categorized into their respective county categories twice with the current system.

Should we request a bot to remove the redundant "Category:X County, Y state" categories from the NRHP categories? I checked on enwp, and we just use "Category:National Register of Historic Places in California", and don't go into county subcats. I would very much like to hear if what I'm saying makes sense and if you have an opinion on the issue. Killiondude (talk) 04:52, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see. Thank you for your speedy and explanatory response. Working with category trees sometimes make my mind boggle. :-) Killiondude (talk) 17:17, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oak Ridge category[edit]

Orlady:

You may want to check the Oak Ridge category. There are some University of South Alabama photos that don't appear to belong in the category. Bms4880 (talk) 15:16, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. That sort of thing happens on a regular basis. Any school that's an institional member of Oak Ridge Associated Universities is in danger of being added to the Oak Ridge category. --Orlady (talk) 23:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. (Yeah, yeah, I know you know what this is for, but, protocol...) Courcelles (talk) 01:29, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

your question about transclusions[edit]

You could look at the 10,000 Vital Article list on Wiki. It is formed of 11-12 transcluded smaller lists. Allows reading everything on one page, but then edits are handled on a subpage. TCO (talk) 16:52, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

Thanks for helping us identify a serious problem. I'm sure there's more to do, and that we'll see this person again, but atleast we know what we're dealing with and what to look for. Merry Xmas and happy 2013! INeverCry 08:24, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
