Dumb robot

Your robot has just sent me a message complaining about Image:DCP 6031.JPG. It says:

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license...

It is right, of course. The only problem is that the template in question is {{badname}}, requesting that the image be speedily deleted. Seems a bit dumb to threaten me with deletion (yes, I know its too polite to actually do that) when that is exactly what I'm asking for anyway. -- Chris j wood (talk) 18:01, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Tismana River Basin

Ciao!

I just received an automatic message regarding the Image:Tismana River Basin. which was tagged PD-author-w with the appropriate information. The original of the image was released to the public domain in Ro:Wiki, the link being indicated in the description of the source of the image. As it is a public domain image it is free to be altered or modified. I changed the text and the legend of the image, translating them into English. What is wrong with the tag?

Robot is tweaking!

Please take the batteries out of your bot, it has tagged a whole bucket-full of my legitimate uploads (that had proper tags) and do I have to go through each one and fix them now?!?! I modified Korean localizations of checkimage.py. (Something were misplaced; based on revision 6003) Please commit this change. Source is here. Checkimages.py

Hey there Filnik, I run your script (Checkimages.py) on my Bot on the English Wikipedia and on Commons, and I just recently updated my revision of the script to the most recent edition of it and I must say that it works wonderfully on Commons, but when ever I try to initialize the script on the En, it gives me a bunch of command line errors all saying "Error: No Licenses Allowed Provided, add that option to the code to make the script working correctly" Unfortunately the English Wikipedia has hundreds of License tags, and a whole bunch of User created License tags which makes it nearly impossible for me to compile a list of them, and I was wondering if there was a way to disable that setting in the Bots Code so that I can just run the bot where if an Image has no template on it (except the Allowed non License templates like {{Information}}) like it used to do before you introduced the new regex license finder? I would use my older version, but for some reason the older version of your script that I have been using for some time doesn't seem to be able to load the Images anymore, and I believe that this is due to MediaWiki updates which is what caused me to update my version of the script in the first place. Well. The pictures of Romanian badges of rank are assimilated as Signs of State, and are in the public domain, see "DP-Ro", "c)" paragraph. I do not know the equivalent license from Commons (the link that you indicated me). Can you change all the licenses of pictures from above category, as expert? Image:Deaerator.png appears to be a copyright violation or advertising spam

Image:Deaerator2.png was uploaded by anonymous User:BerkeleyLab and claimed to be copyrighted by him/her. I believe it is either a copyright violation or was uploaded simply to advertise a deaerator manufacturer.

(1) There is no such user as User:BerkeleyLab either here in Commons or in the English Wikipedia. So a copy violation template cannot be posted on that user's page.

(2) It is an exact copy of a drawing from a presentation by Stork Power Services (a company in the Netherlands) who manufactures what is known as the Storq Deaerator. See the following websites and scroll down to the see their drawing which is exactly what was uploaded here as Image:Deaerator.png:

Robot error

Hi, your robot tagged Image:Karta över Södra Sandby.png as no license. I simply forgot to template the license. Maybe it would be wise to include all the template names in the robot, and give a list of those so you don't tag people incorrectly. I got angry when I got the no license template, wonder how a complete newbie would react... If your robot could detect the template text instead of the {} letters, and you could go through those that have the text without the template, you could probably get less angry messages from newbies, and less scared away newbies because some stupid robot is templating them. /grillo (talk) 21:55, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

This file, which you say may pose a problem, is merely a cropped corrected version of an existing file named 'Cotedazur.png' (because the parameters of the existing image did not accord with the title), and I would have stated a licence for the corrected image if I had found one on the existing file - but the template I added is all I could find on the existing file. Public domain license

Two files I uploaded

• File:Vitez kisbarnaki Farkas Ferenc General Hungarian VI Army 1944 Tatar.png
• File:Vitéz kisbarnaki Ferenc Farkas.jpg

are in the public domain and appear to fall under {{PD-US-1996}} The license is based on the following example and precedent:

which says:

This image was created in Hungary and is now in the public domain because its term of copyright has expired. According to Hungarian copyright law, photographs which do not enjoy copyright protection as scientific or artistic works enter the public domain after 15 years counted from the end of the calendar year in which they were first published.

Innocent victim of the September 2008 image loss

Hi Filnik. The image File:Danish-Navy-OF6.gif was lost or corrupted due to the September 2008 image loss bug. The image was then restored [7] 15 December 2008. It was a copy that was deleted on the Danish Wikipedia because it was transfered to commons February 2007. This image has been tagged with {{Military-Insignia|Danish Navy}} stating that images uploaded after 8 May 2007 will be deleted. This image was uploaded before 8 May 2007 and is therefore still correct. Your Filbot has treated the restoration as a new-upload. Please reprogramme it to treat this image as an innocent victim of the September 2008 image loss bug. As I'll be on christmas holiday I've removed the {{no license|month=December|day=15|year=2008}} tag because some automatic deletion could occur. --Necessary Evil (talk) 19:18, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

There is a link at the bottom of each mediafile's page, "Upload an other version" or similar. Overwriting is the way to repair such without needing an admin's help. Besides, the real problem of this file is the missing permission/copyright status.

Besides, if you ask someone to care about some special file, it would be polite to provide a link to it, which is done like this: File:Bandurski.jpg Best, [w.] 10:06, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Image File:Sir Frederick Currie

This image is in the public domain. The description records that it was created in 1858.

The copyright holder - the subject of the portrait - Sir Frederick Currie - died in 1875
The author, ie the photographer, created the work in 1858 - 150 years ago
Several prints of the photograph were made for Currie family members, including my forbears.
The photographer firm, T Fall, is no longer in existence.

I couldn't find a suitable slot on the licence page - It's not my own work; I don't know who Flickr is; It's likely that the author died more than 70 years ago, but I don't know that for a fact - Nothing seemed to fit.

Bot issue: uploader was not informed

In this bot edit (diff) the original uploader, Photohound (talk • contribs), was not informed of the speedy deletion tag.

I expect that is because the derivative version was uploaded by a different user. (Filbot correctly notified User:JMV290, but that user is not able to do anything except ask the original author to add a license tag: see Commons:Help_desk#Lacking_a_copyright.)

Could you update the bot code to inform both uploaders in future, please?

Addition to bot?

Hey there, got a message from Filbot regarding it detecting an unlicensed upload, though it was just an incorrectly named image that I was asking to have speedied. I'm wondering if it would be possible for the bot to detect templates such as {{Bad name}}, {{Duplicate}} and similar speedy deletion templates, to avoid those kinds of messages. Da du auf deiner Nutzerseite DE-2 stehen hast, bin ich so frei und schreibe dir auf Deutsch.

Es passiert regelmaßig, das einer deiner Bots bei Seiten die von GerWsUpload hochgeladen werden, das Fehlen von informationen bemängelt (oftmals mehrere hundert Seiten). Da wir alle Bücheruploads mit eigenen Templates machen, sind dort sowohl die Kategorien als auch nötigen Lizenzinformationen vorhanden. Villeicht findest du eine Möglichkeit deinen Bot toleranter zu machen. In diesen Templates findest du immer den Aufruf von DE Wikisource Book in den Kategorien und DE Wikisource Image in den einzelnen Seiten eines Buches.

Wie du an dem Bild File:Fr Figur Orsay.jpg sehen kannst, waren auch dort alle Information vorhanden, da ich das template 'Joergens.mi/licence eingesetzt habe, welches die Lizenzsachen eindeutig regelt.

Filbot for transfering images

I have seen that Filbot transferred File:Coppia_di_navi_davanti_al_Vesuvio.jpg. As the file did not have a link to a category I tried to make a link. A problem was that the description "Autore foto: Roberto De Martino" did not help me. I tried to find the image back in the Italian Wikipedia without succes. My experience with [[22]] is that indeed sometimes a description as in this case is automatically filled in, but often on the page itself there is a good description with the photo. That is what I use then and making at the same time a link to a category. Further there is an "original upload log" see for example File:Tizianoferroconcerto2.JPG. I tagged the image last night and it was deleted. Not the drawing but a photo of a bust from the Vatican Museum. It had no lisence and had a description that stated the owner of the image was unknown.

I do not understand why do I have to show a license of a public domain Stemma.

I think a City stemma is a public domain image, there is not license and nobody have to ask to no one to use an stemma. So I don't understand what information do you need of the creator of an image that is of a public domain.

I need, if there is not a problem, an explanation about why do anybody needs to put a license of a city stemma, or a country flag or a national symbol of public domain.

Your bot inserted a no-licence-message for an image that I transferred from Italian Wikipedia to Commons (File:CampoTencia.jpg). Shortly after that, I added the missing license information (May 9th). Public domain works

Images marked with the templates PD-Art and PD-old are presumably pubic domain. It is my impression that Wikimedia Commons is not entitled to apply a license of any sort to such works. If that is indeed the case, then perhaps your Bot needs to include that information in its message, or add it prominently to pages which discuss which licenses shoud be used. (Your bot marked some public domain images I had uploaded as needing a license. I think this may be because I put the template on the wrong part of the page, but I am not sure.) It should not be deleted. It´s under the same license as the Stahlhelm.svg logo in the german Wikipedia, but 1. this license doesn´t exist here and 2. in stupid Commons it´s deleted immidiately after uploading and I can´t ask someone for help.

Ich verstehe nicht, warum das Bild gelöscht werden soll. Es hat die thoretisch gleiche Lizenz wie das Bild Datei:Jungstahlhelm.svg auf der deutschen Wikipedia. If you had taken a couple of seconds to read the file history, you would have noticed that I did not upload that image file in the first place, and that I just made a correction to the existing file, so it's no use threatening me about your upcoming deletion.
