Hello, MichaelFrey!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Monoflop (OR) Simulation 1.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

-- MichaelFrey (talk) 16:10, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Atkinson Utilite' and Brayton Hydrocabon / (ready motor) engines[edit]

Hello Michael, Would you consider making animations for these engines? I don't believe there are any animations for these engines and I think you are the best candidate to make them. As you can see there are many different versions of the Brayton engines... There are 4 different types... 1872 vapor, 1874 oil engine, 1887 4 stroke direct injection, and 1890 air blast. Please contact me if you have any questions... Thank you for all of your animations. John — Preceding unsigned comment added by Imotorhead64 (talk • contribs) 19:30, 02 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lovely - I will give it a look. It is pretty easy for me to make an animation when I have good side view, so I will start with those.
I will also look for patent drawings. Those tend to be side views, so it is trival to get lengths and ratios.
-- MichaelFrey (talk) 06:08, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
for "Atkinson's Utilite' engine 1892" it would help me a lot if I would have a description what each number refers to.
Now that I think about it: I do not even know in which direction the engine turns.
I can not find the patent online.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Animation with soil, but no text

Hi Michael,

Your animation File:Hand pump - Animation with text and soil.gif is great, I just wish there was a version without the text and the red arrows (but with the blue ones), so it would be international. If you still have the GIMP xcf file, it would be great to make one. The RedBurn (talk) 10:17, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Barnstar
Very nice animations. How did you made them? What software did you use. I'm particularly interested in animations that display the firing orders for different engine configurations. Marinoklisovich (talk) 20:29, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The software stack in short is:
Javascript, creating SVG, Shell Script takes screenshot, Shell Script clicking "frame advance" repeat 36 times.
Then convert the pngs to gif. So, the main code is written in Javascript using https://svgjs.com/ running in firefox.
The javascript code is messy, as I simply have layered layer of codes on top of layers of code.
If you would give me a firing order, I could create an animation for it. I can also easily adjust the frame rate, image size, colors, ... it is just code.
But the code is not useful to anyone else. People that would understand the code, could write better code them self.

I did my own labyrinth traversal animated GIF at File:Triple-Spiral-Labyrinth-animated.gif but it's much less elegant than yours... AnonMoos (talk) 23:39, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The SVG File is very high quality - the white path is an actual path.
My workflow is using inkspace and svg.js.
The script essentially draws the path in segments.
Then there is an other script (nodejs and selenium) that takes a screenshoot of each frame.
Then a short
convert -delay 10 -loop 0 *.png
and I have my GIF.
(over the years I have invested some time into automation and scripting - so everything is easily adoptable and adjustable)
My specialty is technical animations - there being able to re-render things is key, as I can not count how many silly mistakes slip trough the early drafts.
(and hand animating)
Frame by frame GIF animation is hard. I did that years ago. I mean: sometimes I still do (see [[:]File:Landing gear schematic-colored-animation.gif]]) - mathematically riging up a complex mechanism can be more work then its worth.
yet on the other: going from File:Strandbeest-Walking-Animation.gif to File:Strandbeest--Full-Walking-Animation.gif to File:Strandbeest-Animation-rgb-100ms.gif to File:Walking Strandbeest.gif taught me how power full scripting is.

Hi, it would be great if you could make an animation of an Inline 8 with a 1-6-2-5-8-3-7-4 firing order, as that seems to be more common.

If you have time, I would also like to see you make the following:

- Re-do the one for the inline 4-cylinder with 1-3-4-2 firing order (it doesn't look right; it should look like your other inline 4 one but with the firing order changed) - Radial (not rotary) 7 cylinder, 9 cylinder, 11 cylinder, and 13-cylinder

File:Flag of the Vatican City-animated.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Strohdach - Campus Galli.JPG.

Thank you.
