First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Goodies, tips and tricks

Hi Baycrest!

I'm contacting you since you have nice Hong Kong related pictures in Commons, and also because you can speak Chinese.

Could you please translate "Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower" in Chinese to this article in English Wikipedia: Clock Tower, Hong Kong. It already has the unofficial name translated.

Also, could you tell me what are the names of the two buildings nearby the IFC in this picture:

The first building is the L-shaped brown building between the 2IFC and the Jardine House. The second building is also brown and its located between 1IFC and 2IFC in this picture.

This would help me a lot, thanks in advance.

It is my plesure to chat with you.

The offical Chinese name of Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower is 前九廣鐵路鐘樓, with reference to the photo Image:HK TST Clock Tower history 1.jpg. I've made a minor edit to put the Chinese name into the article.

Regarding your second question, actually the buildings you mentioned come from Exchange Square. The L-shaped brown building consists of two seperate towers, the left one is Two Exchange Square while the right one is One Exchange Square. The another brown building located between 1IFC and 2IFC is Three Exchange Square.

Image's file name[edit]

I will change the file name of my early uploaded images, but first I would like to know how can I keep the upload date when I re-upload them? It is important issue for me because the upload date can prove me as the original author of an image, especially when an image was found somewhere else with violation of copyright. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Chinese FOP[edit]

Thanks for the fast resolution of the DR on your info template.

I note that you reverted my addition of the name of the architect to several of your images. I see nothing at Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#China.2C_People.27s_Republic_of that even hints that architecture is exempt from the requirement that the author must be named in order for Chinese FOP to apply. I know that we have regularly deleted images of modern Chinese buildings when the name of the architect was not given.

I also know that it is simply common courtesy when showing the created work of another person that he or she be credited in the author line -- almost all of our images of Old Master paintings show the painter in the author line even though the work is long out of copyright. .     Jim . . . . Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Shanghai Metro station pictures[edit]

There are plenty of Shanghai Metro station articles without pictures. However I did some Google searching and I found that you uploaded some pictures to Google Photos (example 1 example 2 example 3) Would you mind if you can upload these photos to Commons?
