Kampagnenbearbeiter[edit]

Hallo,

da du "Kampagnenbearbeiter" bist (keine Ahnung - was man da alles einstellen kann), kannst du mir vielleicht weiterhelfen. Ich will WLM in diesem Jahr in Wuppertal etwas im Vordergrund stellen (de:Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012/Deutschland/Nordrhein-Westfalen/Wuppertal). Als Vorbild diente dabei die Kölner Seite (de:Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Monuments Köln) aus dem vergangenen Jahr.

Kannst du Bitte dazu die Kampagne "wlm-de-nrw-w" anlegen? --Atamari (talk) 13:04, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

-- Rillke(q?) 19:07, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it, please read the text above again and follow the links in it,if you still need help ask at the ? ->Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 04:36, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Licences[edit]

I've asked a question at User talk:Kaldari#Licences. Perhaps you are able to help as you appear to be knowledgeable on the subject and in a position of some authority. From the discussion at FP over the "GFDL 1.2 only" single licence, there seems to be a large number in favour of removing this "back door" NC licence formulation but also a large number feeling that FP should impose no additional licence requirements over Commons policy. Therefore, what is the chance of Commons policy changing here? If the licence formulation cannot be removed, is there a way of somehow preventing its abuse/use as an approximation for NC? If you can answer on Kaldari's talk page, that would keep any responses together. Thanks, Colin (talk) 10:49, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User:Rd232 has jumped the gun a little and gone ahead with several proposals wrt GFDL licences at Commons:Village pump/Proposals. My feeling is that any policy-change proposal should be carefully drafted and have Foundation support. Colin (talk) 18:39, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Historically the interpretation of which licenses are sufficiently free for Commons has been left up to the community, and that's where I believe it belongs. The WMF licensing policy specifies that licensing must be compliant with the Definition of Free Cultural Works, but whether specific licenses are or aren't consistent with the Definition for specific purposes is IMO a matter of such ambiguity that it requires ongoing community discussion. The GFDL and similar licenses that are being used for purposes other than the ones they were originally developed for are perfect examples of this dilemma, as they were clearly drafted to support free sharing of information, but nonetheless may not be appropriate in all circumstances.
So I think what RD232 is doing here is fine, but I've pinged the legal folks in case they want to weigh in.--Eloquence (talk) 18:49, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. We're still thrashing out how the proposal is worded. See my attempt here. What do you think of the wording (even if you don't want to commit to an opinion on the proposal itself). Does it cover the bases? Colin (talk) 21:13, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, can you clarify the point Nilfanion makes that inclusion of a licence on this list of licences binds Commons into accepting it. I think we only need to apply the Definition to our purpose and that list doesn't bind us to anything. Colin (talk) 12:22, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your proposed language looks great to me. I don't believe that you're constrained by the wiki page on the freedomdefined.org wiki that characterizes some licenses. The WMF licensing policy explicitly states that a license is permitted if it "meets the terms of the Definition of Free Cultural Works specific to licenses". In other words, it does not confer the power to decide which licenses do and don't meet those terms to an external authority or a separate process. --Eloquence (talk) 23:57, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Klärung[edit]

Hallo Eloquence.

Appropriately Licensed[edit]

A while back we discussed licence choices and whether the community should prohibit GFDL and other inappropriate licences for images. I've created at discussion at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed, there's also a FAQ which mentions a comment you made on the issue. If you are able to participate at all (even to the extent of stating the proposal is not in conflict with either the Definition of Free Cultural Works or Commons mission) that would be good. -- Colin (talk) 23:27, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CC licence and resolution[edit]

You may be aware of recent discussion at the Commons:Village pump/Copyright#File:Trabalhos.jpg which has resulted in CC clarifying their license FAQ. This appears to contradict CC publicity material that supports the idea of releasing low resolution / low quality images/videos under generous CC but keeping high resolution / high quality images/videos under restricted CC or "all rights reserved". Such practice is very common for professional donations to Wikipedia. Suddenly one is no longer giving away one file to Commons but also the underlying copyright work and any files produced from that which are not by law considered separately copyrightable works. I think this affects not only resolution-reduced versions but also potentially sample chapters, web-quality video streams or snippets of music.

Was your intention with "Definition of free cultural works" for copyright owners to give away everything under a free licence, or did you consider it acceptable for them to retain control over their original work? I think we are guilty of misleading professional photographers, and others, to donate more than they bargained for when giving a file for Wikipedia. Does Wikimedia intend to make this clarification more public or contact photographers who donated small sample images?

Personally, I was veering towards some kind of "CC0 (BY)" terms where the attribution was merely a polite request. But still with the idea that all I was offering was the file. Perhaps something like "Beerware" is all I require. -- Colin (talk) 14:25, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:2minsilenceatbbc.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

All images uploaded by User:FlickrLickr were licensed under CC-BY at the time the bot uploaded them. CC licenses are irrevocable, so even if the photographer later re-licensed them, this does not change the fact that they were originally available under an appropriate license.--Eloquence (talk) 07:02, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
At the time when I found this file, I found the file is licensed under a noncommercial license. I once considered the author of the file may change the license, but the user who reviewed it is not a license reviewer, so the license used at that time is indeterminable. I think you may want to undelete the file if you think you have enough information about the file, thank you.
The bot's operation started and ended before the license review process was introduced; it performed its own license verification through the API and exclusively uploaded CC-BY photographs. I believe its uploads should generally be grandfathered in except in cases where the original license claim was clearly in error (e.g., copyvio on Flickr).--Eloquence (talk) 07:20, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, then I think that it is suitable to undelete this file, thanks a lot!

Expiry of GWToolset user group memberships[edit]

There is a proposal on the Bureaucrat's noticeboard to automatically expire GWT memberships after one year unless the user requests an extension. Please add your views and suggestions to the discussion. The reasonably informal process for getting access to GWT access will remain as is.

Sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) on behalf of Revi. 15:42, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Per the proposal mentioned above your access to the GW toolset has been removed. Please feel free to request back at any time via the Bureaucrats' noticeboard. --Krd 08:00, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Millennium Park has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
