"E-mail this user"-function; -> anonymous users do not get this message to see. Only logged in users see it. Because many users here are not active here frequently it is useful that this function works to contact users and ask questions about there uploaded media. Can someone change the text to something like on the English Wikipedia ("Wikimedia Commons e-mail confirmation has been enabled. To receive Commons e-mail, you must go to Special:Confirmemail, request a code, and follow the link in the e-mail.")? alerante 00:46, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
That seems to me to long and not necessary. If users are able to use this wiki then that user can not be so stupid that the need a full user guide for this. But I see now that there is already that long notice on the RC. So this sitenotice is not really needed. But I think it would be good to keep it for some time. Not all users use RC, especially on this wiki I think. --Walter 00:53, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
I think it has been there long enough there now. I remove it now. --Walter 20:57, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

How to block this message

Add this to your monobook.css file (at User:Yournamehere/monobook.css):

/* Remove Unneeded Notices */
#siteNotice { display: none; }

Also, if you do this, keep in mind you should add this page to your watchlist, so that if important changes are made to this, you'll still see it. pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:37, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Anonymous users see this too!

I just logged in from uni, and I saw the site notice when I wasn't logged in. I thought it was only for logged-in users?? pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:22, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Do you search MediaWiki:Anonnotice? Sanbec 11:22, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Do you mean, did I see it? Well, it's blank... but I just tested and yes, anon users can see it.
But the point is, I thought they shouldn't see this notice. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:03, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree, they should see only the anonnotice. Sanbec 23:25, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

The site notice is for all users. It's intended for messages about maintenance, and is also used for fundraising. It makes sense to show that to everyone, no? If we want a global message for logged in users only, something like MediaWiki:Usernotice could probably be created. But what for? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 00:36, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Well, the recent uploading issue only applied to logged-in users, for example. I don't really mind if this shows to logged-in users, I was just under completely the impression that it didn't. pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:41, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

dismiss the [dismiss] link

The [dismiss] link at the top of every page can be removed by blanking the site notice. It currently has an invisible <div> box, which triggers the dismiss feature. —Pathoschild 19:02:35, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

I have a wiki of my own and I was thinking of doing something similar to these on my wiki, how do you get it so that it is at the top of all the pages? 82.27.19.152 15:37, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

If it's a MediaWiki, you just go and edit the MediaWiki:Sitenotice page on your wiki. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:06, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Please can some admin update the figure in the sitenotice?

VI countdown

Is there a procedure to request for something to be put on the site notice? What I have in mind is a count-down notice for opening of nomination for valued images on June 1 0:00 UTC? I have made a sandbox template, which does the trick, User:Slaunger/Sandbox/VI-countdown, which renders like this:

The valued image project has opened for nominations!

The motivation should be to boost the launch of it and get a good start. It would be nice to get it up one week before and keep it one week later (after June 1, the message changes saying that the project is opened for nominations). -- Slaunger 17:06, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I was just going to be bold and add it (unless any objects are raised here), but I never edited something this visible so I hope someone with better MediaWiki understanding can do it. I'm also unsure about what an appropriate time period would be. Rocket000 22:49, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Good point. Cirt (talk) 12:55, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Also what should the note say? Just an example here: "2008 Election suffrage poll have started, please vote on voting before it's too late!" it isn't the best but can be changed. Would be nice with other opinions about this here. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:00, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I also have the bug sometimes. – Kwj2772 (msg) 10:14, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Interface change

As it will be a major change, I think we should inform our users about the change. I'd propose to use the LangSwitch feature again, as it seems to have worked when the patroller notice was on and localized subpages of the Sitenotice don't work yet. Here's the English source text, from which it should be translated: "The default skin changed today from Monobook to Vector. For more information, please refer to the FAQ. Please leave feedback or bug reports here in whatever language you prefer." Please advise on improvements of this text. Thanks for your help. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:54, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, it did not work very well : sometimes I had the french version, most of the time the english. Dunno why. Jean-Fred (talk) 19:25, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
I guess the language switch is better than nothing. I had the french version for a few hours last time (as did other English speakers when I asked them), but it fixed itself. I think adding the sitenotice should be fine. :-) Killiondude (talk) 01:02, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
FYI - The new interface (Vector, the new toolbar, dialogs for links, tables and search and replace), will be introduced to Commons as default interface at 7am UTC on April 6. --Shuhari (talk) 20:29, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

I've moved the translations to the actual page now. If there needs to be any modifications to those, please point it out to an admin so they can edit the actual mediawiki page. Thanks everyone. Killiondude (talk) 07:53, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

It appears that there is a problem here because I have the language set to Spanish but I see the notice in English. Best regards, Alpertron (talk) 11:53, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Krinkle Fixed it in this edit. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:36, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Now it shows the text in English and then after 6 seconds the text in Spanish replaces it. I'm using a Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz so it is not a slow computer. I expected to see the text in Spanish as soon as possible. Best regards, Alpertron (talk) 21:18, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
  • Is it normal that I see the sitenotice in arabic, no matter what language is in my settings or what language I put in the uselang parameter? --Eusebius (talk) 08:28, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
    • If you don't use Vector, then this is just normal for you, because the Sitenotice is cached (according to this comment). It only works in Vector, because this skin has the jQuery, which allows to localize the sitenotice via Javascript. --The Evil IP address (talk) 08:49, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
      • In short, I can't have sitenotices anymore unless I switch to Vector? --Eusebius (talk) 09:24, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
        • Well, the usual sitenotices which aren't localized are no problem, they should work fine. The only problem is when we localize the sitenotie with LangSwitch (for example, we could also do it by using the specific language templates En or De, but this would take some space). --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:43, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
          • But LangSwitch works with other skins, right (well, apparently it does)? And now I see the sitenotice normally translated... I don't understand. In a few minutes I've seen the site notice in Arabic, French, Chinese, and now English. --Eusebius (talk) 09:45, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
        • See MediaWiki talk:Common.js#$j undefined. The problem is not vector or the other skins, but that the Javascript mechanism doing the translation in vector doesn't work on other skins. However, I've just posted there a version of that code that works in all skins (with or without jQuery). Lupo 10:19, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
          • OK, so issue is known... My allergy to JS unfortunately prevents me to contribute, but thanks to all developers for their past/present/future work (and testing). --Eusebius (talk) 10:32, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Err... shouldn't "today" be changed to "recently"? ...Aurora... (talk) 13:08, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Yes, of course. Done for en, fr, and de. Lupo 14:12, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

MediaWiki does not support localization of the sitenotice. The JS hack Commons uses is clever (when it worked ;)), but while the page is loading it still shows the notice in a different language and then suddenly switches over. This does not exactly look nice. I would remove it all together and keep it in English for now. Opinions? -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:07, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

We could display the english and give a link to the translations, either umpteen links, such as in our templates, or just one to whatever page with all the translations (using eg Mld). Jean-Fred (talk) 21:08, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
I did some JS magic, and the sitenotice is now loaded from MediaWiki:Sitenotice-vector. To disable the dynamic loading entirely, simply emtpy MediaWiki:Sitenotice. -- Bryan (talk to me) 10:51, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, you've put your code into MediaWiki:Vector.js. People using other skins will now see an empty site notice with a "dismiss" button. Whether that's better than one in the wrong language is debatable. Anyway, the proposed fix for the other skins at MediaWiki talk:Common.js#$j undefined could of course also use this mechanism. With an empty site notice being displayed, I think it should be enabled rather urgently. Lupo 11:17, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Translation

Recently Bryan has moved the translation to MediaWiki:Sitenotice-vector to prevent the cache from containing the wrong translation. See here for those edit(s).

The translation is done by a javascript replacement in MediaWiki:Vector.js([1][2]) and MediaWiki:Monobook.js aswell ([3][4])

Since it's not vector-specific, I've renamed that page to MediaWiki:Sitenotice-translation.

So when a Sitenotice is introduced, put the English version in MediaWiki:Sitenotice and the translations in MediaWiki:Sitenotice-translationKrinkletalk 01:02, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Confused

Why do we have two site notice pages? This and MediaWiki:Sitenotice-translation. Apparently it was moved to refresh the cache, but isn't that what MediaWiki:Sitenotice id is for? Why are we using #switch: (or LangSwitch, which it was previously) in the MediaWiki namespace? Can't we just use subpages like all the other system messages? The autotranslation is automatic. Rocket000 (talk) 01:58, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Subpages don't work with this one. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:13, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
#switch is a bit more efficient. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:42, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I tested it and subpages don't work for some reason. Anyway, do we need to change both when we want to change the site notice? It seems like MediaWiki:Sitenotice-translation is the one to use. Rocket000 (talk) 20:50, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Neutral maybe not, but sufficiently independent minded is fine too. BTW is this the banner version for logged in users are all users? If we didn't all those banners about all sorts of questions, I suppose I wouldn't have thought of it either. If we got a consensus that the banner shouldn't have been used for all that stuff either, I'm fine with it.  Docu  at 09:53, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it's for all users, logged-in or not. If you look at the edit history for this thing you'll see lots of disagreement about what it should be used for. Rocket000 (talk) 12:42, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Just for future reference, you could use a hack to make the sitenotice only display for logged-in users. It's detailed at en:Template:MW notices. Killiondude (talk) 06:12, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Suggestions

It might be a good idea:

To warn Commons users that a wikimedia software upgrade is going on and that category sorts will be wrong for a couple of days.
After that, to issue a message that HotCat is stable, useful and can be enabled in "My preferences/gadgets". Only 1à to 20 % of category changes are made using HotCat. --Foroa (talk) 14:42, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
Per discussion here, I agree we should put up a notice fast, before people start making changes thinking that this is some new feature... Rehman
If we use the site notice to alert people to a performance problem, don't we start by invalidating the caching of millions of pages and just adding to it? We might want to use a watchlist notice for this instead.
--  Docu  at 06:07, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
Oops. I though this was the MW page for watchlist notices. I agree with Docu, the notice should be a Watchlist notice. Rehman 06:50, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

That's not the expected behaviour. Sitenotice is supposed to only show to logged-in users; and Sitenotice-translation ought to do the same. From your description, it looks like Sitenotice-translation is displaying its content to all users. I've tried creating MediaWiki:Group-user.css on the same principle as MediaWiki:Group-sysop.css. Thanks! Sorry, low on time currently and could not check back until now. Site notice is cleared now. But I opened in my second browser (Opera) and it was still in server-side cache for anons. Here is the html content (hidden - see edit mode)
Nothing is visible anymore but leads to a jump of the page content by about 1 cm down when the site notice is loaded as it is there but just not visible. --Saibo (Δ) 01:21, 18 January 2012 (UTC) Tested: same for nl, fr. But not for en. That is the html for en: (hidden) --Saibo (Δ) 01:24, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

Request for sitenotice for important deletion discussion affecting over 3000 files

Hi, as I noted at other locations, the Supreme Court has ruled on the URAA, affecting a large number of our files. I've opened a deletion request at Commons:Deletion requests/All files copyrighted in the US under the URAA. Today is the blackout, but I would greatly appreciate if we could run a sitenotice starting tomorrow about this deletion discussion, ideally for at least a few days. Draft text:

The Supreme Court has ruled on the URAA, and over 3000 files are up for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/All files copyrighted in the US under the URAA.

Thank you! Dcoetzee (talk) 18:30, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

Meta: Global bans

Are we OK with having a sitenotice about this proposed global policy? See Commons:Village_pump#Meta:Global_bans. (It's currently a watchlist notice, but that's only for users with English interface language. The sitenotice should exclude such users to avoid duplication.) Rd232 (talk) 19:00, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Are sitenotices loaded through JS?
Watchlist notices aren't (they are delivered with the page content). I could implement a javaScript watchlistnotice for all users with the abilty to filter by
  1. interface language
  2. user group
  3. geolocation (country, city)

and allow the user to filter notes by category (e.g. tech, gadget-news, policy changes, ...) -- RE rillke questions? 09:22, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

POTY Sitenotice

Please

  1. Add option "|link=" to barnstar image
  2. Convert this banner to autotranslated for translations ability (see related discussion)

Russian translation

Please add Russian translation (after convert to autotranslated mode) as following text:

|ru = Первый этап конкурса «Изображение года» на Викискладе открыт для бета-тестирования. <br />Помогите нам сообщениями об ошибках и переводом страниц конкурса. Однако, просим пока не размещать рекламу в других вики-проектах. (Узнать подробности...)

Thanks! --Kaganer (talk) 09:07, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

After a talk with Rd232, we found the solution. Done. -- RE rillke questions? 13:29, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Dear translators, please post future sitenotice- translations to →MediaWiki:Sitenotice-translation. Please also post them to the according translation page at POTY. We need them also for global banners. Thank you! -- RE rillke questions? 13:29, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

FoP RfC Sitenotice

Would anyone object to retiring this one? It's been up for about 2 1/2 weeks. Kaldari (talk) 08:30, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Edit request

Editprotected - please replace 70% with 100% or 99% or something that works better. Mono 03:20, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Editprotected (again) this is needlessly too large and the width should be increased, per above. This message is not to be deactivated without a response Mono 01:59, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Bold will not get you there until you give a reason for the change. Béria Lima msg 15:08, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Oops, I guess I wasn't clear. If you set the width to 100% or 99% it would only take up one line and displace less content. Right now, my large screen shows a little banner that is centered and lots of whitespace. It's purely technical. Editprotected. Cheers, Mono 16:30, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Done. -- Rillke(q?) 20:13, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

How about this banner (modified rillke's post last year / only en) until 2013-01-18T23:59 (until the centralnotice will come).--miya (talk) 16:04, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Request for sitenotice

Hello, I am requesting a sitenotice for POTY 2012 Round 2 (Final Round) to run instead of a CentralNotice on this wiki. Picture of the Year is a widely recognized event and we would like to encourage Commons editors to participate in celebrating Wikimedia's best pictures. The banner would remain visible to logged in editors from Feb 7 2012 to Feb 14 2013. You can view the banner here - the banner would appear in English only. A POTY member will fulfill this request at the beginning of Round 2. Mono for the POTY 2012 committee at 21:07, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

I can't assess whether it is true what Multichill said while removing because I've blocked all banners. Perhaps someone else could comment here. -- Rillke(q?) 11:55, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
The CN banners are still up - they can go down for Commons when the sitenotice goes up. We're looking for the standard banner that's below. Mono 16:15, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
I think we should switch simultaneously. Why do we need a local site notice? Let's talk in IRC. Best -- Rillke(q?) 20:58, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
