Your license[edit]

I am only concerned about commercial use. I don’t want people to make profit of the images and not use a legal loophole to inference copyright. You can change the license a little bit. I was not sure how to proper license the images. --Belginusanl 17:59, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Add Brazil Government tag[edit]

Hello Pfctdayelise,

I have made a template of the copyright status of all Brazilian official symbols. It's in {{PD-BrazilGov}}. Could you add it into Commons:Copyright tags?

Thank you!

Template:PD-BrazilGov[edit]

Unfortunately there is not a translation of the law, but I updated the template to look like Template:PD-LithuaniaGov. I translated the section of the Law that regulates the copyright of official symbols in Brazil and inserted into the template box. And we in pt.wikipedia assume that this law applies worldwide, as Brazil is signatary of all international conventions on copyright. Ok?

Philipi 00:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forget the latter[edit]

I've found an english translation of the law here: [2]. Look in the Article 124.

Orgullobot edit summaries[edit]

Heh, that tends to happen from time to time. I'm not exactly sure why and while the times it puts an appropriate summary outnumber the times it doesn't, I don't think we should worry too much about it. I'm glad you're keeping an eye on the changes, though. Maybe the bot gets so many requests at a time and it gets its botpanties in a wad, idk ;-). --Orgullomoore 18:12, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

from User talk:Connel MacKenzie

I am looking forward to seeing how it goes (especially in English ;)). I think it can be especially useful for a smaller project like wiktionary, and hopefully will just need a glance every few days rather than obsessive maintenance. User:Duesentrieb will be very open to suggestions and improvements. It would be cool if you could give us (or at least, me :)) a small report on how it's going after a couple of weeks. e.g. if other people in the community find it useful, if you find there's many things that seriously affect your project that you weren't aware of before, etc. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:17, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, now that it has been going for a little while...
This is so wonderful! I have no idea how we survived without it! So far, on the small project (English Wiktionary,) we've seen one image deleted about every other day. Or rather, one image tagged for deletiong. As I've notified users that their image is on the chopping block, they've simply taken care of it quietly. A far cry from sysops running to Commons, screaming, after-the-fact!
I at first started the process to have en:wikt:User:CommonsTicker flagged as a bot. However, the instructions I think should say never to do that. On small sites, seeing the edits once a day, or once every three hours is crucial. On large sites, it won't matter anyhow.
On behalf of En.Wiktionary, THANK YOU User:Duesentrieb for allowing us to pilot this! --Connel MacKenzie 18:04, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From dynamic to static?[edit]

Hi!
I'm just wondering, it seems as if commons is stopping with categorization of images / media (dynamic), and going into static pages showing the media. Is this so? I encountered it at Category:Middelburg, after having categorized two other municipalities of Zeeland in the Netherlands. If this is true, how can we ensure that these pages are kept up to date, and show all media available? If you'd happen to know why this is done, I'd like to know - I don't really understand what's happening now...
Regards Noorse 01:48, 6 June 2006 (UTC) :) (I'll keep track of your page :) )[reply]

Hi Noorse,
There is no official policy regarding a preference for using categories over galleries(AKA articles, same thing) to organise or display files. The official policy is just that you should use at least one, and it usually makes sense to fit into the existing structure. In fact a mixed system works quite well. These are some topics where a gallery makes much more sense than a category. Each domain or area tends to have its own system, not always written down. Maybe you would like to help write one (a category scheme) for the Netherlands? There are some already at Category:Commons category schemes (I would especially compare to the France one). If not, just write to the people who seem to be implementing the current system and ask them how they see the plan working. People tend to "adopt" certain category areas to "look after", which is good because otherwise categories can get quite a mess, but they should welcome new input and not treat them as "their" property alone, of course. Just 'cause it looks official doesn't mean it is, remember. :)
The Middelburg/Zeeland one looks like it might make sense, since at the moment there are not a large number of Middelburg images (or even Zeeland ones, for that matter). Using galleries also offers much greater control over display and organisation, you can see that in Middelburg, you can't get that kind of organisation in a small category.
Keeping galleries up to date is of course quite hard, especially as there is no technical option to "watch" a category (and be told when members enter or leave it). You might like to ask the people who are currently implementing this system how they plan to keep it up to date. Maybe they just check the category every few months. It doesn't seem like it would need a lot of maintenance to be honest.
Does this help? Let me know if you have any more questions or want some help writing a category scheme. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:19, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and no... Since the introduction of the galleries I find it harder and harder to find anything here. When we'd normally have discovered duplicate images due to the categorization, we now upload new as we can't find the old ones. :( I just feel more and more like giving commons up. Today I found an erraneous comicstrip coa which had been cut from a .svg flag - which also was wrong. And there was no older image... What is happening? I tagged the erraneous coa for deletion, but left the flag in as it was the only one. Image talk:Flag of the Pitcairn Islands.svg, Image talk:Coat of Arms of the Pitcairn Islands.svg and Image talk:Pitcairn coa.png. Sorry to keep sighing about this, but it worries me. regards talk to noorse at no: :)12:32, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
P.S. there are often a lot more files available than it seems, due to bad categorization in the first place...
Thanks for stopping by :) - and checking around the Pitcairns. Concerning the cat's & willingness... I try, whenever I look for something, to categorize. It's just the sheer amount of the work, with cateories seemingly rather being deleted than utilized that throws me off :( How many files is needed for a category to be considered useful at commons? 10-20? Right :) I'll try finding you on Irc... :) Noorse 15:57, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unclear licence[edit]

Hi, I have a problem with somes images uploaded by User:Lily15. She uses the {{PD-old}} tag for files that are clearly not so *and* that are three-dimensional (so {{PD-art}} cannot apply, as well). No source is indicated. Some could be her own creation but I have strong doubts about Image:Borghese gladiator.JPG and Image:Aristonothos krater.jpg for instance. I have asked her more details but she has not come back to Commons since more than a month. What is the correct way to handle this? Would it be correct to ask for the deletion of these files? Is there some kind of "unclear licence" tag? Jastrow 14:55, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese reading request to confirm image licensing[edit]

Hello Elise,

FrancisTyers (talk · contribs) has asked for my advice regading an image of unclear licensing. He thinks {{PD-China}} would be a reasonable choice as the picture might be old enough, but he doesn't know any Chinese and cannot deduce the author (or licensing, for that matter). Unfortunately, I cannot really help him either, but I was wondering if you could scan thru the Chinese page linked on the image description page and share with us what you learned from it. Many thanks, undoubtedly on behalf of him as well! —UED77 02:14, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess that my level of patience for people who ignore the clear messages at special:upload varies with my mood, but I do try to remember to revisit all the images that I mark as nsd or nld after a week so that I can delete those that need to be and I avoid contributing to the backlog as much as possible. Gallery link in Welcome-Template[edit]

The gallery-link in the template only works in the english version, not in the other languages, because it puts a wrong username the field. I don't know if it is possible to repair. Greetings, Longbow4u 17:38, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to barge in, but it could possibly be fixed with an <includeonly> / <noinclude> trick. If the localized version is directly transcluded into the user's talk page, the text inside <includeonly> would be displayed, providing a direct link to the user's gallery. If, however, the user is viewing the localized version as a template, the text marked by <noinclude> would be displayed, providing a general link to the gallery tool. See {{Welcome/hu}} for an applied version of this. Also see how the first line changes depending on if it's viewed as a template, or actually transcluded. —UED77 19:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I could not read what there was exactly in the Hungarian template (lack of this skill). But perhaps someone could check the German template {{Welcome/de}} and include UED77 fix. Thanks, Longbow4u 20:53, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping the language would not be an impeding factor, so sorry if it was. However, here's a mockup in English, as if English were a localized template. Compare the differences between the transcluded and viewed version of the same template:

First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

UED77 21:34, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is a good partial solution (did you implement it for the translations of template:welcome?) But in general we still have the problem for templates such as {{No source since}} and {{Idw}}. What we really need, you see, is automatic translation of templates!! pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:38, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possibilities for WM projects[edit]

Well, todays Wikizine says that there's (will be) a new Fundraising committee. http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution_Fundraising_committee

Probably Wikiprojects would be a good start point. If there's a groupt of people interested in Foo, we'll likely have good articles/images/definitions... about Foo. And if some aspect is not good at all, they'll be willing to finish it. Having their work published is a good motivation.

I don't think spoken wikipedia to be mature enough. We don't have spoken articles (they seems to me a bit random) although if you're going to sell a Foo pack, you may get all Foo articles recorded in a few days. When people is interested... It could help promoting spoken Wikipedia.

CDs (usually) have 80 minutes. Some articles have a duratiobn of 3 minutes, other of 20' :s

I think people'd tend to pay for <..> if it came to their home on a nice CD or if it were on a pretty box on their supermarket. Wikimedia chapters will be of help on this but we can't afford such kind of comertialization (hey! you never know if we could save money on that. People is very bizarre).

eBay could be a good start for selling:

  • People is registered and used to spend money by Internet.
  • They will be looking for good sales
  • Transactions are send by post. No new systems.
  • eBay allows multiple selling of a product at X price. It doesn't only have auctions.
  • It's international, we'd only have products on different languages.
  • Packs would be prepared at the nearest WMF chapter for sending.

Hi Zanimum,

On these images you have written, Jimmy Wales took her to the event's red carpet, she donated the rights to the episode into the GFDL. Do you have some evidence of where that's been recorded? I can't find any statement like that on the Rocketboom site. In fact the About page says all Rocketboom content is licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA, which is a non-free license for the Commons. If that's true, these images will have to be deleted. So do you have a public URL, or an email you can forward to permissions@wikimedia.org ? Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 09:19, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've forwarded a message by Jimmy from the Communications Committee to verify this; although the list is officially confidential, there's no private information in the message that I can see the other members at odds against. This was the special condition that Jimmy place on his invitation for letting Cogdon come, we were originally planning on just having a still photographer at the event. -- Zanimum 12:46, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Censorship[edit]

Hi there.... Why are some of my contributions deleted before the end of the period?--Tomascastelazo 22:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, I have to reconstruct... but the I uploaded 4 mummies hand pix and only two remain... another that was above image:mura was removed....

Thanks --Tomascastelazo 13:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pictures removed before deadline: victims of wealth.jpg, Ballenas.jpg and 2 mummies pix. Removed by Mglanznig
    • Thanks for your reply... You know, my only desire is to contribute, and I will continue doing so.... It is not really important that the pix were removed given that a procedure or rules were followed. On the other hand, and this is a personal observation, the criterias used to rate pictures are really amateurish. This forum has a great potential. I face critisism all the time... it is the daily bread, but criticism is valuable when it is informed and objective, beyond the "gut feeling" or "pretty picture" level. Annoying people with multiple nominations... well, not my intention... I am new at this... but I catch on quickly. --Tomascastelazo 14:37, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Pfc, I just marked the image for deletion and warned the user. It comes from a copyrighted website, Philippe Jean Bunau-Varilla died in 1940 so the term of copyright hasn't expired yet and there's no evidence either that the photo was taken prior to 1923, but you have a look, my Holmes deductions might be wrong :) Anna 00:37, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

merci.

à plus tard.

in english, i just mean i'm late and not fast because of my very soon up comming to wikipédia éditorial crew. i'm writting a page in my draft and in few time, the page will be log in the wikki.... O.K ? so i upload again the picture and then try to finish my work. thank you very much for your attention and may be well write again soon....

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for taking care of the messages on my talk page; I was planning to stop in for a while tonight and kill of a few more categories, but I don't think I will now. The same kind of insensitive, self-absorbed whinging I'm sick of dealing with on en is now turning up here, so I think I'll just go do something else. I'm sure I can find somewhere else to spend my time. Thanks for all the great stuff you've done, and for being so much help to me. Essjay (TalkConnect) 02:13, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

COM:FPC new nomination method[edit]

Hi there, thanks. Am I really one of the first, cheers. It was a little confusing in the beginning because it was new, but once you get the grip on it I think it's definetly an improvement to the old method which involved a lot of tedious copy-pasting and moving back and forth between pages... I hope I did everything right? There could be some mistakes when I nominated that image... but it's definetly better than the old method, cheers. Gryffindor 07:27, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've turned the former into a redirect to the latter. It is probably better to use the pages available rather than to create new pages to monitor. / Fred Chess 22:50, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient coins[edit]

HI Pfct,

On the Dutch wiki I encountered a fairly large collection of photographs of ancient coins nominated for deletion as they were not in use on some article. You can find the list nl:Wikipedia:Te_verwijderen_afbeeldingen#CharlesS here and in the two subsequent sections. They lacked copyright info, but as they are essentially photos of 2D objects we reasoned that they were PD-old.

As you are one of the people active in the judgment of copyright violations, I would welcome your opinion in this before I start uploading the whole bunch here on commons.

all those cars, bikes, etc[edit]

Theres thousands of pictures here yet most are too small, even worse very few are worth using as wallpapers. So many are taken of cars parked in the street, theres a few at shows its saddening to think there are so few good photos, and even fewer Feature Picture qualtiy ones.

Seriously after trying to find just 12 good quality shots something needs to be done to increase the standard of pictures. How would I go about starting a Quality Image project similar to en.wikipedia's Good Article project. Gnangarra 16:45, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I haven't forgotten this one, long time ago as it may seem. My plan is to sort out category Dutch pronunciation and make a subcat for the names of localities, not only including municipality names, but also city, river, and other names, maybe if needed with other subcats. So Category:Dutch pronunciation of toponyms (if that's the correct word) with (if needed and maybe not right away) subcats as Category:Dutch pronunciation of river names, Category:Dutch pronunciation of municipality names etc. I was planning to do this with w:Wikipedia:AWB, is that possible or is use of that tool unwanted on Commons? Do I need a bot flag for this, or should I just make a maximum number of edits/minute? Cheers, NielsF 21:25, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PMS merge[edit]

Hi Lise! My main idea would be:

  1. get the grounds ready for the "merger" by preapring all the translation needed.
  2. convoj pms users to commons by changing the internal link
  3. transfering what can be used from current pms archives.

Sounds nice and easy, doesn't it? :) Now, let's go to phase 2 (aka "the dream turns into a nightmare"). Where do I find a to-do list for starting the translations? BTW, babel template now knows about pms here, too :) --Bèrto 'd Sèra 17:32, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My sympathies[edit]

I just came across this comment of yours on copyright issues: I'm so damn sick of dealing with these stupid topics with zero guidance from the WMF lawyers. It's a ridiculous situation. and just had to express my sympathies. I feel exactly the same way. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to make those lawyers help out; be they Brad, who at least holds an official position, or Soufron or Villy or Michael or someone else, who are, as I understand, volunteers like us, too. The negligent conduct of the foundation concerning image copyright issues borders on irresponsibility and is utterly frustrating to me. Lupo 12:07, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Index images[edit]

Following your welcome log call, i have been doing User:Orgullobot/Welcome log/07/8 (delete it if it's blue)

Some issues i encountered:

  • User:Brtoken uploaded 13 images, with simply the text Índice (index) on it, rotated and with several backgrounds. Licenses are valid, but it seems to me quite irrelevant to have it. What should we do with them?
  • Several people uploaded images saying, permission from X, with no evidence of being given that persmission. Do we have any appropiate template? I've been striking them and maeking as no (valid) license, and notifying them. At least a prepared message would've been helpful. {{Image source}} is not too appropiate.

Non-Orphans[edit]

Some new commons-culture clash. re: John Stapp and this... the two photo's are just off the screen bottom as I open the page. Draw a diagonal through the redlink for Project MX981 and it passes through both. So is Orpan a reference to categorization or to use in an article? // FrankB 03:15, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Left you a 'status message' b4 diner. Just returning, and consulting [8] this, it looks to be the start of your heavier contrib period. (Is the Commons listed like WikiP errrr... wiki_p is <g>??? Couldn't figure out whether the tool is even valid over here.
  2. Didn't follow your answer on the above question. Suggest you start with a basic definition of 'Orphan' and build from that. Don't recollect seeing the term over there, and haven't a clue as to what place ANY article (on en.WikiP, "Main" space) plays over here. I thought the commons was media related, and text was left to and for the various sister projects.
  3. Keep in mind my comment about the culture over here... I'm a newbie here, for all intents and purposes.
  4. Pardon on the ramblings with the numeric para's, but I was cramming three days work into one marathon stretch. Even I find it somewhat disjointed when revisiting my text.
  5. The purpose of the numbering was to match your point or query with answers, then use the 'expanded' number sections to just say things like:
re: 4.5.7 I think your point about sexy women is on point, but...
...again a technical practice (including US Gov't and law in certain areas, I believe).
4.5.0 equates to 4.5, the fifth subtopic of topic four.
Intro's are of the form X.0 or just 'X.' Similarly, sub-intros have form X.0. (...) .0 — which is to say a difference in topic from the last. I do hope that wasn't too confusing, or stressful, it's pretty straight-forward. (I think I got the indents right, though it's hard to be sure without taking a hardcopy read. Also, I'd be ten times more productive on these wiki's if I had a WYSIWYG editor for doing the wikiWork!)
  6. I'll start looking immediately for what your long post had other than that procedural point. I'll probably just start by revising to create sub-section headings at each X.0 paragraph, and we can section edit that way at the same time.

Think this is much ado about essentially saying: 'Hi Frank' to me... with some information exchange. BTW- I've already conceded on the template names, if you see my talk. T'would be nice to have a first name. Your Wiki-handle is pretty difficult. IMHO, it'd probably parse better if it had some random capitalizations. <g> Let's see... how to parse 'Pfctdayelise' mnemonically?

I get 'pfc'=='Private, First Class; 't' for Tom, 'Day' (that part is easy!) and an alternative (misspelt) 'else'=='Elise'. Or some such. Thus: PfcTDayElise makes far far more sense to me! <g> (assuming that's a good parsing. If 'dayelise' is a last name variant I've never seen... then it sucks, and I don't even want to entertain what 'pfct' might otherwise represent... 'Perfect' perhaps. (My, how humble you are!??) Hmmmm... your user page is 'light hearted' but gives few clues. Not even sex or age. No Bio at all, at all. Shucks. Well, assuming I parsed that wrong and 'Dayelise is a last name: 'Congradulations for having a more uncommon last name than mine!' (I'll stop playing now!) On to your long message! (Hope you don't mind being teased!) // FrankB 03:23, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay Brianna, that's a sweet name origination. I'm afraid mine is entirely prosaic! I'm essentially in Boston, USA, by the way, and I'd guessed that locus for you on language choice and the edit time distribution. Life would be soooo much better if they got that tool fixed—should be a function in system software, not a hokey script hack job! I wasn't trying to snoop. The contents of the click box for selecting whichy wiki your parsing are so long I somehow missed it—presumably because I was mostly focused on 'en' variants.
I'd submit it'd be kinder to the rest of us if you encoded a talk link into your signature! Say: Pfctdayelise
(Some folks use a 'desk' or contribs links for the third one. I was just trying for red white blue to pull your leg a bit. White disappears over here.
Now
here's another system diff—it's 'stacking' the font commands here.
I think it would have cleared to default over there.

My next door neighbor is from downunder as well... has the cutest baby girl they named Sydney, which is I believe where she is from. One day I hope to visit and walk-about. cladogram deletion[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise,
would you mind deleting Image:Banksiacladogram2.jpg and Image:Banksiacladogram1.jpg. User:Casliber uploaded and GFDL'd them on the grounds that the author had previously given him permission to make use of his work. However these images are from a paper published in the American Journal of Botany, and I should say it is almost certain that copyright is held by the journal rather than the original author. After discussing this with Cas (on the English 'pedia) we agreed that it would be prudent to delete them.

Oh, and I forgot. Thanx for the amazing work you're doing here on Commons. notafish }<';> 13:43, 18 July 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Since we're both here[edit]

What do you make of this? I am tempted to transfer it to en: and tag it fair use. But look at its use on en and the caption of the image, it seems it is made by the guy who uploaded it (the button that is). So? notafish }<';> 14:00, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you misunderstood me. I have no reason not to believe it's not his pic. What I am not sure about, is whether the subject of the image does not fall under fair use. Even if *he* made the button himself. The person on the button has a right to an image, and I don't know what political promotional material fall under. My take would be fair use. Hence exit Commons. I believe he is the one who took the pic. (I mean hey, that's a pretty obscure campaign isn't it?) I would have double tagged the image fair use (for the subject) and PD (for the photo) on en. notafish }<';> 15:05, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Or we could also ask him. And gain time. notafish }<';> 15:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Or....look at this and this and decide it's his button, and his photo... notafish }<';>
I am concerned about the fact that making a photo of something, even a button you made with your own hands for an obscure little political campaign, does not make you the copyright holder of that something (in this case, the image of the woman, the slogan, the design, what do I know). In the end, I would argue (if I were a purist), that the button is his (the make) the photo is his (the photo of the THING button) and that the photo/design of the campaign fall under copyright. But you are right, I think all of it is ok. Thanks for putting up with me and my renewed interest in commons, I had lost faith. notafish }<';> 16:21, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Milosevic picture deleted?[edit]

I saw that you deleted the picture from the swedish wikipedia part of Slobodan Milosevic because it was against the copyright rules, but why when it stands "Slobodan Milosevic official portrait from http://www.slobodan-milosevic.org/images/milosevic-1.jpg which is fair use and also it is not copyrighted" on the English part? --Narcissist 20:57, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okey, i just saw that it stood "2 juni 2006 kl.14.14 203.214.115.130 (Diskussion) (Removing image, this image is a suspected copyright violation and will soon be deleted from the Commons:. (commons:User:pfctdayelise))" in the history-log.

I checked it up on Commons and i saw that it wasn't you who deleted it?

"11:29, 12 June 2006 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:Smilo.jpg" (Fair use from :en:Image:Smilo.jpg) 21:11, 12 March 2006 Crux (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:Smilo.jpg" (Fair Use)"

The english part have uploaded it on their own server, with another filename so probably they had the picture on Commons before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Smilo.jpg

--Narcissist 08:41, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was Smilo.jpg you deleted, anyway it stood that it was "fair use" but not copyrighted. Do you think it's ok that I upload it on the swedish server? Haven't learn all the copyright-rules yet. --Narcissist 09:59, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering if you can help me with categorising this image to keep the Alexander Turnbull Library (New Zealand) happy. At present the image is tagged PD-old, but in an email the library has said the following to me:

While the image looks great we do have one concern. When you click on the image you are taken to a page where the following text appears in a grey box:
"This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired. This applies to the United States, Canada, the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 70 years."
While the image is indeed out of copyright, it is the Library's role to administer the use of the images as heritage objects. The cited text suggests that anyone can take the image and use it for whatever purpose. This undermines the Library's ability to protect the item from inappropriate use (incorrect citation, poor quality reproductions, etc). If it is possible can this box please be removed. The following text must be inserted in the caption underneath the image: "Permission of the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand, must be obtained before any re-use of this image."

Is there a way to do this? Seems they want to have control even over old pix like this. I would like to do my best to keep them happy because they are a really great source of worthwhile NZ pix. Kahuroa 06:53, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply - will do as you suggest. here is the link to the image on the Turnbull site - tho their server seems to be having problems at the moment, this does work usually [9]. Kahuroa 12:44, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Strangely misfiled?[edit]

Hi! See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:TIME. Seems totally screwed up and disconnected from 'meaning'... {I was trying to run down why {{DATETIME}} is giving a newline when should get a colon here instead.) I've moved the talk on the template cum system. Need you to figure out what are good template names for you. Gotta run! emails in my pipeline. // FrankB 17:53, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Add to above, my sig's timestamp is 'mutilated' in (see top note in bold) user:fabartus/tmp1. Since we're on same, this needs a speedy-delete: Template:User:fabartus/tmp1
Ahhhhhh! OIC, 'DATETIME' and sig mutilation both occur in ';' prefixed sub-heading lines... The system software is creating a newline (linfeed) plus indent when used in the timestamps. (Note: Just tested on en.wp... has same problem there: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fabartus/desk#Next) // FrankB 19:34, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
re: I can see how you're confused, but {{TIME}} is a speedy delete tag because on en.wp it's a fair use tag. See en:Template:TIME. This is to stop people blindly copying fair use images to Commons. Similarly template:fair use, template:promotional. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:43, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Ooops I said nothing regarding Template:TIME... (Dang!... Misstatement in my original note should have said {{CURRENTTIME}} {{space|4} ...[also notice the rendered and displayed redlink as is system call!]) ... but was
as I was talking about the seeming misbehaviour of template:DATETIME, which is used for timestamping things... In this case, archiving my talk page.
'It'expands to {{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} ... which, iirc, are hardwired calls to system software... and I believe the function calls which tack on said timestamping as part of one's signature, for example.
The matter is moot unless you want to report the ebedded colon misbehavior as a minor bug, as is cross wiki-behaviour, which was my reason for adding the OIC part to the prior note. So you could know to ignore this whole thread. Regards // FrankB 14:01, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flags and other stuff[edit]

Re your message on commons-l from June 30, 2006: did you see en:Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems? It grew out of the discussions at en:Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2006_June_20#Template:FOTWpic... an official word on it would still be good, but I don't think we'll ever get that. I've also asked both Michael Snow and Soufron to review en:WP:PD, without success. Finally, as I wrote over at Commons:Village_pump#Anyone_going_to_Wikimania?, I think you should re-post that message at foundation-l, I think you're likely to get more input there than on the relatively quiet commons-l. Cheers, Lupo 09:00, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"w:Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems seems to be pretty US-law-centric"... I know. I'm most familiar with the U.S. regulations, and it was the easiest to find useful sources for. I've tried to give a somewhat wider perspective by including links to international copyright treaties where applicable, and discussing a few cases from outside the U.S., but it could still be improved. It's basically a question of when a work passes the threshold of originality, and that varies between countries. So once again, we're back at the question of which laws to apply... Still, AFAIK, the U.S. rules are pretty common for once, except for the typography bit and the coloration. User:David Newton recently expressed the opinion that coloration alone was not sufficient to warrant a new copyright in Australia at Template:Deletion_requests#Image:Naval_Ensign_of_Australia.svg. As I said, a review by some professionals (preferrably including some from outside the U.S.) would be good to have... Lupo 11:44, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Re "snide remarks at commons": then don't mention commons exclusively. It's a common problem also at the English Wikipedia! Your questions are not that Commons-specific, after all. At en:, we also have the same problems (and the same problematic "PD" tags!) Lupo 11:44, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What to do about[edit]

... image galleries which seem well categorized, but are not here.

That is see: Category:United States Navy images, and note the parent cat (redlink) brought in from en.wp when tagging it's sister-project cat (and all those many images (via the sister link) which need further sub-categorized, as far as I can see.) Since these are PD by law, seemed the right thing to do in creating this cat here... which already had an image. Should I do the same with that heirarchy suggested by said parent category (US Military Images or whatever), or do you all have something in place already? // FrankB 20:09, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Hash mark redirected categories"[edit]

Hello,

Regarding edits like this, please be aware that having any more than one line destroys the RDR. You can keep the RDR in tact by placing categories on the same line as the #REDIRECT. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:41, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Works for me, jumping from the hash mark redirect page, or typing the category in the hash box. In what cases does it not work for you? -Mak 15:29, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it didn't use to work that way. It is very nice to know that someone is checking what I am doing. I am trying to be careful due to the breadth of some of the changes I am making. But I do make mistakes, and when I do sometimes they are quite silly. Regards, -Mak

Fred for Bureaucrat too[edit]

Venice[edit]

Actually, the sentence was a small joke. Most folks living in southern Europe are familiar with those names- that is- if they get around at all. But most would probably say Venezia for Venice. Which is correct in Italian. But actually in Venetian (which is not a derivative of Italian, but a unique romance language like Catalan), the spelling is Venessia. With only two million speakers of Venetian nearly all of whom speak it as a secondary language, it is a pretty obscure fact. -Mak 16:30, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Funny. Right. It is not an emergency. I do prefer it obvious that there is something unusual and important about the text on the category page that the person really ought to glance at. I don't know about you but sometimes I am moving so fast I can easily overlook text as diminutive as the "original text" you pointed to. So can we keep with the general In Your Face kind of size? Here is the version without the red border.

Arbitration.[edit]

Hi! I would accept an arbitration comitee, but I have several questions about it (read in Commons:Village Pump, please). Perhaps you should ask it to Pmmollet, because he's also involved. In fact, he noticed me first about the changes he was disappointing, and so the trouble started. --Joanot Martorell ✉ 08:22, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Pfct, I'm sorry but can't accept the arbitration. I'm not neutral enough in this issue, as Martorell and I have had some differences about it in the past, here and in es:wiki. We're both from the same country and this is a very controversial matter in Spain, so maybe someone who isn't involved neither belongs to the country could deal with this problem from the exclusive point of view of commons policies. Sorry, friend :-( Anna 22:52, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
About the arbitration: I've read up a bit after your question, haven't been that active lately. I sincerely would want to try, however there are two caveats: firstly I'm confused myself about commons policy with regard to category names, some examples Martorell named (e.g. Category:Sevilla instead of Category:Seville) seem right to me, but according to the English name = category name policy it would be wrong. Furthermore I'm slightly biased against Martorell's actions, blocking, if it just for two hours, is IMHO not a good way to go for an admin. So I'd like to try, but I don't think I'm the most qualified person for the job. NielsF 01:07, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going on holidays for two weeks. I hope you find a third party until that, so. As a see-u-goodbye I leave here a photo of one of the places I'm going to visit. Arbitration and the likes[edit]

Hmm I guess Martorell will have read my comment above as well, so I guess he'll be hesitant to accept me. Furthermore his wishes are a little steep (english, french ánd spanish, pfew). The only person (admin) I could find by browsing Template:List_of_administrators_by_language that would qualify 'd be notafish. Anyway back to your post: I'd be willing to hear their arguments and 'll try to forget behaviour, as both parties haven't behaved according to Wikiquette it should be possible for me to ignore that. nl.wp unfortunately has no arbcom or something like that, it has volunteer mediators though; en.wp's arbitration process has several steps, afaik, with the arbcom being the last step, before that mediation is recommended, but hey, I'm hardly ever on en.wp, 'cause I don't like the bureaucratism there, too many procedures, not enough common sense. Anyway, if the parties would accept me I'd be willing to hear their arguments, read up on policy where needed and try to reach a workable consensus. Cheers, NielsF 22:58, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think NielsF is properly aware of linguitic questions. So, I agree with the choice of this user as arbitrator. When do you expect my arguments ? --Juiced lemon 12:09, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! It's Martorell from a wifi hotspot. I'm still on holidays, but I advance that I've no problem to accept NielsF as a third party opinion. I prefer that arguments managed by Juiced lemon first to be pointed out, as the conflict was started by this user. I'm going right back in few days, so I will point my reasons soon. In the other hand, about blocking Juiced lemon, I've done it only for two hours because of ongoing editwar crussade. I think that I should to be responsible as admin volunteer in any situation I'm involved, so it means to assume risks. Cheers! --Joanot Martorell ✉ 14:30, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Imposter account?[edit]

At User talk:AdmKesher, User:AdmKesher is asserting that they are en:User:AdamKesher, but could not create User:AdamKesher because someone had already taken that account name. The AdamKesher account was used to make absurd claims of owning the copyright to two BBC images whose subject matter is the material that en:User:AdamKesher works on. I am tempted to block the AdamKesher account here upon receiving verification at en: that the account is an imposter. Can you think of a reason that I shouldn't do this? Jkelly 03:11, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind. The issue has apparantly been settled; the account was created and forgotten about by the same user all along. Jkelly 03:53, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no lang template for color corrected[edit]

Thanks, but that template is just illustration now. When we are decided that we want such a certification template, and the text of the the certification stabilizes, we will commence creation of a real lang set of translations. At this time, anything that puts up a bunch of languages will give an idea of the layout so people are detered from sticking a lot of text in the description (since the languages will take up substantial space.) Alno's RfA[edit]

You're not a 'crat, however you're the most 'senior' person I know here. Could you please convince some bureaucrat to close Commons:Administrators/Requests_and_votes/Alno ASAP, cause I don't think it should last any longer because of inadmissability according to guidelines (more than 200 contribs). NielsF 02:00, 10 August 2006 (UTC)( On second thought, is inadmissability a word?)[reply]

Inadmissability seems to be at least Ozzie English, as you didn't comment on that ;-). I tried before to get User:Andre Engels, fellow Dutchie and bureaucrat, to intervene when MakBot needed a botbit, but he wasn't very forthcoming. The problem with Commons seems to be that it's a second project (and yes I plead guilty, although I at least try to respond on talk messages as soon as possible) for almost all contributors (you and a few others barred). Anyway, I've asked Arnomane about the RfA and I hope he'll take a decision soon. NielsF 02:19, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah read his mailing list reply, however, I asked him on nl.wiki and he responded there, so he read my request, but didn't take it into consideration or couldn't be bothered; it was mixed in with some "local issues" so he might not have understood. NielsF 02:35, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi pfctdayelise, and thanks for your message.
I really understand your position, I think I may have the same behaviour if I had to vote for an adminship request on fr: for someone who seems to be really young in the project (low editcount and recent account creation - even if some high editcount is sometimes not relevant). However, I'm used to first read the FAQs when I want to contribute somewhere on the internet :) Here on Commons, I've been reading much more than I wrote!
Anyway, I will not be angry if I am not admin here, I'll just try to help of my best, and see later (in a few monthes at least) if I can help more by asking again for adminship :)
Thank you again for your kind message,
Best regards from France,

Perhaps you remember dealing with the tag on this imgage before when I had asked some questions on the VP about it. You changed it to GFDL as it is a derivative of a GFDL image. The editor who last contributed to it insists on re-tagging it as Public Domain. I have tried explaining to him about derivatives, but he does not understand me. Can you weigh in here as I know you have previously examined the situation?--BirgitteSB 18:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to do as you suggested with the old files. But I do not work much at Commons and rarely uplosd things at any project and I screwed it up. In any event the version I started with is at Image:Polynesia..png and the version as it was after my own contribution is at Image:Polynesia.JPG. Please feel free to delete these whenever there use for comparision is over the newer file is definately superior. My own version is particularly crude as I changed the German words to English with MS Paint :) Very crude, but the image was in high demand at the time. Anyways I am interested in how this will all work out as regards the line being drawn on derivatives and whether maps are creative works at all. I must say after seeing a spectacular exhibit on cartography at the Boston Public Library it is hard for me to believe the choices involved with mapmaking are not creative ones. I have simply seen too many different ways to show equivalent information for me to believe they are not creative decisions.--BirgitteSB 21:23, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can this picture be deleted?[edit]

Hi! I found a picture of me, cut from a larger picture, here on Commons. Since I don't consider myself "encyclopedic", and I haven't granted permission to publish a pucture of me, other than as one of the people standing in the background on a group photo, I would like to have it removed from Commons. Can you do this, please?

Mexico problem[edit]

Re: User talk:Zirland#You are a FUCKING IDIOT

Regardless of this personal attack... how could you ever think that speedy deleting 120 images, without even making a simple attempt to contact the user who was the uploader of nearly if not all of them, when they are still in use - how could you ever think that was a good idea? That heavily used/established templates should always go through COM:DEL would hardly need to be said, I would have thought, but apparently it does. We are not in the business of "deleting at all costs". This is not one of your better judgements. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC) [reply]

According to Commons policy, copyvio images are considered as subject to speedy delete. From many discussions I got understand, that copyvio images can be deleted even without unlinking. Correct me if I am wrong. The images was marked as non commercial for approx. one week and later the tag was explicitely changed to "speedy". I checked the non commercial license on source web page http://ehecatl.2004.presidencia.gob.mx/tecnologia/ (well I cant read spanish, but CC logo was clear to me). I had no idea about the e-mail, that now mistically appeared. I see this topic on Village Pump... well I think it is hard to say anything more about this now. I do not intend to react to "FUCKING IDIOT", I just wanted to tell you my reasons. --Zirland 11:48, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information of the complaint. I can only agree: the e-mail with full e-mail header, that now mistically appeared . Have a look at Commons:Village_pump#Complain_about_User:Gildemax_and_User:Zirland where I did write an answer. --gildemax 17:49, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

COM:DEL and stuff[edit]

OK, I understand what you mean now about template subpages, I'm not all that familiar with the technical aspects of MediaWiki; hope my newness doesn't seem too stupid :) I'm trying to get a feel for how things happen on Commons and my current impression is that a lot of policy stuff here is quite disorganized, where is the blocking policy for instance? COM:DEL is a prime example of Commons problems, glad you like my splitting suggestions there. It seems like COM:VP is another page that needs reform, IMO it would help if there was a page like en:WP:AIV on Commons.--Nilfanion 14:12, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks. To be honest I'd rather learn about the technical of stuff here than on en.wp anyway, as that place is a bit oppressive at times. I agree most users here have familiarity with the basics from their main wiki, I do have that understanding (as well as a hatred for copyvio). I think you are probably right about there not being enough blocks for copyvios. Perhaps, a short block on Commons would be more effective if combined with a block on their "home"? And yes, I know about everyone being overworked and underpaid...--Nilfanion 14:38, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not quite hiding from en.wp here :P I suppose here, as the community is smaller its generally nicer.
Yeah I agree now I've thought about the blocking stuff, they are a slap on the face not a punishment (unless its indef).
On the subject of problem users, I've been chasing up a user both here and on en.wiki for a lot of copyvios, could you check his uploads out? Theres a number of copyvios: some tagged as speedys (by me), some with long expired nsd's and some I have put up to COM:DEL. However he seems to have abandoned commons and is uploading on en so a block here would mean nothing anyway.--Nilfanion 16:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hiya, must be getting tired of the questions probably, but here's another one: [10]. This image has been nominated, voted upon and deleted by one and the same person, before the 7 days of a nomination on COM:DEL had passed. In nl.wikipedia this would've been not done, and it'd be normal to let the request stand and ask another admin to do it (via IRC or talk page, to at least have 2 sets of eyes). I'm still trying to grasp the nuances of Commons' unwritten rules, because there are many it seems, so I'm asking you. My gut feeling is that this isn't "proper behaviour" for an admin but if that's accepted behaviour here, ok. Cheers, NielsF 00:07, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK; thanks for the answer. Guess this is were some cultural wiki-differences come into play. Btw I didn't disagree with this particular deletion, but it was more an example for me of something I wasn't sure of how it's handled here. NielsF 14:46, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is wrong procedure. I've seen Erin do this before. I think she will get problems if she keeps it up. / Fred Chess 16:04, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What? I don't much like stumbling upon these discussions about me going on behind my back. Look, I'm sorry if I have deleted an image before the full 7 days. If I did so, it was a mistake and you had only to point it out. I clearly acted in good faith, and we are talking about an image that the uploader wanted to have deleted, nobody wanted to keep, and had always been an orphan.
A totally separate issue is that of being both the nominator for deletion and the admin who carries out the deletion. I am very offended at the nasty implication that I am doing something dodgy or against policy. Show me a policy that says that a listing cannot be closed by the person that opened it, and I shall abide by that policy. However, I can hardly be expected to abide by policies that are only in your head.
I am not behaving badly. On the contrary, I am being a very good janitor by searching for images that need to be deleted, and seeing the process through from beginning to end. Haven't you seen the huge backlog at Commons:Deletion requests and Category:Candidates for speedy deletion? It is massive, and as many admins as possible are urgently needed in order to fight our way through the flood of files. If we had more hard-working admins, I could sit back and relax. But all too often, if I don't deal with something, it doesn't get dealt with. I am owed an apology here. — Erin (talk) 04:17, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I have edited the relevant page. If nobody reverts, then we can consider this policy from now on. But not retrospectively. — Erin (talk) 04:48, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Weather Project[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise,

I noticed your comment on User:Pfctdayelise/Other people's pictures about Ólafur Elíasson's The Weather Project at the Tate Modern. Perhaps you already know, but unfortunately those aren't people walking on the ceiling. It was actually a very large bank of mirrors that covered the ceiling of the turbine hall. In fact the yellow/orange 'sun' was just half a disk illuminated by a bank of sodium lamps, the top half of the sun's disk is really a reflection. Other aspects of the weather were simulated using mist generators around the sides of the hall, but they were easily overlooked.

One of the interesting things about The Weather Project installation was the emergent behaviour of viewers. After a while people started to enjoy lying on the concrete floor of the turbine hall, basking in the rays from the fake sun. However when lying on the floor, you were left looking at yourself and the strangers around you in the mirror 35m overhead. During crowded times, groups of people tended to arrange themselves in star patterns, or made synchronised movements, in order to be able to recognised themselves in the reflected throng.

By the way, you can find another image of the installation on the English wiki at en:Image:Tate.modern.weather.project.jpg and probably many more on the web. -- Solipsist 20:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that information, very interesting. I had no idea. :) However in that image, the reflection doesn't look right. There seem to be a lot more people on the 'ceiling' than on the ground. How come? BTW, did you get to see it in person? pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:42, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's a little confusing. You need to know the layout of the Tate Modern. The turbine hall is a large void in the middle of the old powerstation. Its 35m high (about seven or eight stories) and I guess about 120m long. Most of the floor is at a basement level, but the ground floor doors at the west end of the building lead on to a long ramp sloping down to the middle of the hall. The doors on the north side of the building arrive at a smaller mezzanine level in the middle of the room with railings look down to the main floor below and some steps leading down. The second picture is taken from near the west end door, so you can see the sloping floor leading underneath the mezzanine level. Whilst in the first picture, the view point is from the mezzanine floor with several people lined up along the railings, but the reflection from the ceiling mirrors is mostly of people on the lower floor level at the east end of the building.
An yes, I saw the Weather Project a couple of times - it was quite captivating. In fact I think I've seen all the main Unilever sponsored installations in the turbine hall, apart from the 2002 installation by Anish Kapoor [11].
By the way, the Tate has recently launched plans to double the size of their exhibition space by building a ten story Herzog & de Meuron extention on to the south side of the building, sometime in the next five years [12]. -- Solipsist 13:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

apart from the obvious during this arbitration thingy, which I had incorporated in an earlier version that was unfortunately lost during a FF crash... thank you for pointing that out, what do you think of the timeline and different phases in the arbitration? I wanted (and am planning to) ask other users for their opinion in COM:VP, so I can weigh multiple arguments, but am doubting whether it's going to be just useful or might render the attempt unfeasible because of everyone "spamming" their opinion on the arbitration. Also, do you think other people should be bound by this, at least until completely new arguments are brought forward, I'm thinking yes at the moment? Just trying to get it right here... Just poking around[edit]

Interesting 'tagging', why wouldn't these be tagged as "text" or "Logo" with Snow and Ice on, instead of being grouped with the nature sciences stuff, then sub-classed. The only one listed is the image given as an example!
While I'm asking newbie questions, should there be any images in this at all? I'd think not.
Is there a general tag to indicate (say apply when one finds something definitely miss tagged) something needs retagged by ICS? That is a category that is patrolled by the more expert editors and gang edited as a result to clean up the contents.
One person can immediately know such and such belongs to so and so, etc. // FrankB 14:33, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about that as a new namespace (it would be something like portal on Wikipedia) or as a new Wikimedia project? I have tried to write something about this here. Hi pcf,

I have the impression that many contributors to the bio media are not aware of the current discussion in village pump, many even are not aware of the ToL project. I would like to inform some of them of the current discussion, but this could be viewed as "asking for support". Are there any policies on this? My work is mainly on the Dutch wiki, where asking for support during voting is strongly condemned, but opinions differed last time when people were invited to discussions. I dont know the does and donts in this on the english wiki or on commons.

two engravings for deletion[edit]

Hi again,

Can you delete Image:Banksia dentata engraving from Bank's Florilegium.jpg and Image:Banksia integrifolia engraving from Bank's Florilegium.jpg please? These are recent prints from 18th century engravings. Although the engravings themselves are unarguably in the public domain, Peta has suggested, and I now agree, that the process of transferring them to a print probably involves substantial creative input, so the prints themselves may be subject to copyright. In each case the original watercolour is also on Commons, so we're not losing anything by taking a conservative position. Snottygobble 11:44, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On the other hand, there is no discussion. Only there is the intention to defame me of User:Abu badali (I say him that he can upload his image with the same name than the other (over the other image). The procedements he have used don't are respectful.

I would like to express what I think, but I am not able in english. I can do it in spanish or Galician language (no in portuguese language). I feel defenseless. I only can say in English litle things (This year I am studying English: I hope to improve). I can write this message thanks to this page

Important: I don't use my administrator capacities against him.

I would like to speak in Spanish (although I could write more than one hundred lines, but for nothing: there is no discussion).

That clear speedy candidate[edit]

Re your comment: "please speedy delete such cases": of course. I would have if I could have :-) Not being an admin here, I did the next best thing: X it out and alert someone who was able to delete it. Lupo 11:19, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Main reasons:
  • Never thought about it until a few weeks ago.
  • Not sure I really would do more than an occasional speedy or deletion debate closure. I'm most of the time on a slow link (56kbit analog dialup!!), and working with images is a royal pain because it takes ages. I also don't really have much time for Wikipedia, and what little I have, I actually prefer spending by writing encyclopedia articles over at en:, not engaging it tiring copyright debates.
  • Speaking of which: when Histo & Steschke asked me to run on Sept. 1, 2006, I declined. Very bad timing, and I was sure Histo's reasoning would reflect badly upon me. I think that still applies. Since that PD-Soviet brouhaha, several people seem to dislike me (alas, not just the "usual suspects", but also some others I had hardly interacted with ever), and I'd bet we'd see concerted actions for support- or oppose-voting if I were stupid enough to run now. And even if not, being an admin would actually hinder me sorting out the images Alex Bakharev has so boldly and quickly moved to PD-Russia, because as soon as I touched any of those, people would yell "admin abuse"! No thanks.
In summary, I don't think I would benefit from being an admin; and the benefits for the commons would be marginal. It just is not worth the trouble. Lupo 12:08, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Info[edit]

Hi Pfc, I would like to ask you if there is any rule to create name for cities: I know that category should be create in english, but I noticed that many citiy-categorie have a "national" name; let's say Munich, or all the cities in Sued tyrol, or the italian ones. What's your point of view? Thanks, --mac 14:18, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that Munich as a german name, redirecting the english one. But apart from that, is make sense ( to me ) that if the city name can be national, it's better to have other city attributes in enlgish; but you have answred me: there is no rule for city category names. really remove (Indexed)?[edit]

Hello, I just wondered if it wasn't better to just move those (Indexed) categories out of the way (by removing their familia category tag) since if they still exist somewhere then it's much easier for me to revert the images that have (Indexed) tags by just going through all these categories? POTD template[edit]

Please see my comments at Commons talk:Picture of the day and tell me what you think. Thanks. --Digon3 14:42, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we should add Quality Images as well. However, there are plenty of FP that arent in the POTD list [17][18]

[19] [20]. The template is just to decrease the number of people that submit their failed featured pictures or poor quality picture [21] because they did not read "The Picture of the day must be chosen from the Featured pictures (which are selected by consensus). Please do not propose non-featured images, as they will be liable to removal.". If we run out of FP we can use QI and if we run out of those we can stop using the template. If you want me to give you more FPs that are not in the POTD list tell me --Digon3 15:03, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am fully aware of that, I am just looking for suggestions to make the proposal better. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to unilaterally decide policy. Also, I have no idea how to start "propose that from X date, all POTD must be FPs or QIs, then make an announcement and take a poll on COM:VP or commons talk:Picture of the day or similar." --Digon3 16:10, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • What did I say that made you think I was deciding this by myself? I would like to change it if it gave you that impression. --Digon3 16:17, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank-you for starting the poll. By the way, how would I create a template to make it look better for a proposal? --Digon3 21:40, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • According to this, we have 605 Featured pictures (I still dont know how many of those were POTD). According to this, we have 148 (37x4) Quality Images. In all, we have 753 FP or QI. I am probably wrong somehow, but that is what it looks like to me. --Digon3 14:09, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POTD[edit]

Hi - I see you've reverted some changes I made to the POTD main page. Just to explain that they were made following a suggestion I posted on Village Pump. There was little response, so I just did it. As suggested by another user, I also let users in other languages know and sought a multi-langauge discussion by postings on the talk pages of all of the other language respective versions - quite a few! (actually, the multi-language versions were not the same as the English version even on 26th Sept, so there was and still is a need for a multi-language agreement). It seems from the poll that there is in fact agreement that the POTD should not just be any old thing, so we're getting to where I was hoping to be anyway. By the way, can you tell me whether old Village Pump conversations are archived? The 'index' mentioned at the top of the page goes back to the beginning of October only. --MichaelMaggs 06:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Work on Non-CJK stroke order[edit]

I seen that you already know user:Shibo77. He asked me almost the same question one month before, "how may [I] make arabic *-order.gif faster", using french. But that's a big work so he made all his nice SVG.
Across the web, looking for "stroke order + gif" on Google, I never seen Arabic stroke order animation. Probably because it's too basic for arabic people, so they never did it.

To work on this, some pages of our CJK project may help you :

  1. Chinese_stroke_order:Asian_alphabets - page for "other alphabets". You can add and work on the arabic alphabet or ABCD alphabet as well, that's welcome ! Progress on arabic *-order.gif or *-bw.png (easier) or *-red.png will appear as soon as someone upload the files with the good name.
  2. CJK Protocols >> *-order.gif Protocol - protocole that you are looking for ;]
  3. user:Shibo77 - he can maybe help you in this work. But as many of us, he work on his projects and may be busy.

All what can help you is here, Good luck to you Pfctdayelise Yug (talk) 10:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Arabic SVGs[edit]

Hi! I used Inkscape. If your operating system uses a left-to-right script such as English, then Inkscape will take that order, so when you type yaahamzah followed by alif, they won't connect because the program thinks that you have typed alif followed by yaahamzah which wouldn't connect... I don't know what is your operating system, but you probably use an English one, then you have to find the Babel map/Unicode map/character map depending on your OS. Select an Arabic font to use, such as "Traditional Arabic", you have to select the forms in accordance with how the lettres connect and not the isolated forms. Select U+FE8B yaahamzah initial form and copy it to Inkscape, then select the U+FE8E alif final form and copy it to Inkscape immediately following the yaahamzah. The two will automatically connect. Another way is to copy-paste several forms, change to "Paths" and then "Union". I wanted to make stroke order .gif's for Arabic lettres, but I need to do 15 to 20 separate captures for a single .gif, so I gave up and made .svg's... If you want to take over, I will be glad to help. --Shibo77 23:34, 7 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Excuse me, but where is the scheme proposed by lemon? Doesn't he just act as yoiu are compling me? For the matter, imho it's silyy do dig under of categories to go from piedmont to mountain of of piedemont. If I rember well, you told me that we have to increase the reachiblity of pages and photos. So what's silly in your opinion? But please answer me: is it correct to remove categories introduced by somebody else or can I remove the ones of Lemon too? --mac 08:16, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mac9[edit]

I hope we shall. But since he is Italian it was easier to talk to him in Italian in his talk page... I did not espect the matter to drag for months and to reach Commons' adms. To date I was always able to solve all problems by myself. I espected we could find an agreement some time. The point is that it is hard to discuss with somebody who, simply, does not reply... :-( This is why I asked for an arbitration. And a warning, if necessary... --G.dallorto 21:37, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am an opinionated person too (very much so), but Wikipedia taught me a lot about cooperative work. ;-)
No, my case is different from Juiced Lemon's one. I am not bickering about which categories to implement. Whenever I find categories already in use, I pour my contributions into them without changing them (I only split them into sub-categories when they become too cluttered). If mac9 wants to create all categories about italian geography himself, let him do it, I shall use them afterwards an I shall agree with him about how to use them (provided he accepts to discuss about them!!!). The point, as you have understood by now, is that he must allow categories to stand, in the first place. Then we can discuss about the rest. Or leave him and juiced lemon to fight about it... Scheme countries and subdivisions[edit]

Hello,

Two months ago, I created the scheme Commons:Category scheme countries and subdivisions. I didn't open a talk about this subject because I waited for the verdict in the arbitration with User:Martorell. This arbitration concerns basic principles, and I think it's useless to advance this work if these principles are not confirmed. Now, this scheme has to be updated.

However, my purpose is to propose:

  • a kernel scheme which should be used for near every country and important subdivisions of countries;
  • the strong recommandation to build the categorization structure beginning with first level categories; so, if you create a second level category, you don't use it as a first level category, but you create also at least one first level category.

Example: If I categorize a bridge picture in Category:Bridges in Sudan, I'll create also Category:Buildings in Sudan AND/OR Category:Transport in Sudan, but I shall not categorize the new category in Category:Sudan. --Juiced lemon 11:40, 11 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Mac9[edit]

Here is the answer mac9 he left me in my discussion page.

quote:
== D'Allorto ==
Ok, You reached you're intention. You made a problem about me. You're charging me because I'm not answering to you. Generally I don't answer, when I think is useless, but maybe I'm wrong. Let's try to start again. I've already asked you (please don't be a lemming and please don't insert a link) if you had a category with 1,2, n photos, and I organize the same category with a page with all the photos you put in it, why are you so disturbed by the circumstance that only the page (with all the photos you've inserted) will compare <he means "appear"> under that category? --mac 22:28, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
unquote.

So he does not answer when it is useless to do so. He is not answering my questions, and he is simply asking why HIS way of doing things is not good for me... Have you any suggestion? I think he is more of a moron than of a vandal. Discouraging. I really need suggestions about how to behave with this kind of people. Getting angry would be of no avail anyway. Thx in advance. --G.dallorto 01:42, 12 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Category:Rivers of Lombardy and Lemon[edit]

Lemon revereted my contributions giving no reason (except the one that have already given to you); it's possible to stop him on vandalism basis? --mac 12:31, 13 November 2006 (UTC) (I red you're answer about browsing by geography of..., on that matter I have to concerns 1)the cat model proposed by lemon it's to deep 2)it's not immediate and not conseguent on name basis: if I have mountains of lombardy, for me, it's natural to go from there to lombardy category...) [reply]

Please note, that althoght I don't agree with him, I didn't revert his contribution....--mac 12:32, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Childhood obesity picture[edit]

Thanks. It's nice to see at least a few people take the same view, and sad to see people not considering the human aspect. (Have these people never been schoolchildren themselves?) I just don't see how someone can be proud of work that comes at the expense of someone else. In my opinion, Wikimedia falls down without goodwill and being better than we have to be by the letter of the law... but that's a bit of speechifying I'll post on the debate page itself! Mindspillage 01:40, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hired![edit]

I will start in that scheme...but at the moment I'm very engaged with the real life (it's true); what's the amount for the job? ;-) --mac 11:42, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's that what do you mean? If yes I'll try to make it a litlle more complete and put under attention of other users (italian bar, village pump, both???) to get their contributions. What do you mean with translate? --mac 12:53, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What's the goal of Temlate Italia? Maybe to add it into all the categories that falls in the schema? --mac 13:54, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand well the schema, Commons:Category scheme Italy, is functional to the template only; it isn't a way to coordinate contributors job. Is it?--mac 15:30, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Are you upset by me?[reply]

Dude. His last contrib was 9th April. We're not totally incompetent, ya know. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:27, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... Note to self: do not block people late at night... :)
What do you think of my ANB suggestion against such users? --Cat out 22:44, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
--Cat out 22:44, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think your "blocking structure" is OK but just too darn long! Things should not get to the 6th block. If they are not responding at all, 3 should be plenty, then indef. And make the first block shorter, as a real shock tactic to make them pay attention but not get too upset.
There are two ways you can know what language a user speaks: (1) what text they put on image pages and (2) which wikis the image(s) are used in. This is often a great tip.
My last tip: don't do any admin action you're not prepared to defend with your full brain. Know what I mean? Don't give them any ammunition. And if you do this, then when you are criticised (and you will be, of course), you can sit back and let meatball:DefendEachOther take place. We can't defend you if you do it first. And we can't defend you if you're not prepared to stand behind every single admin action you do and say, "I believe I was doing the right thing and improving the wiki." But if both those things happen, then it really won't matter what anyone says. It'll be water off a ducks' back. But both those things are up to you.
regards, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I guess you are right. A 3 warning system would make more sense.
Yea. You are right but sometimes people just upload images not used in any wiki... :)
I'll keep that in mind. :)
--Cat out 18:20, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You know... there's no prize for being mentioned the most times on COM:AN. Are you planning to burn out like a supernova or would you like some longevity to actually achieve some good? In your successful RfA, you said Why do I want to be an admin? I am tired of staring at various backlogs. Is that what you've been doing? Is it so impossible for you to guess which actions will be controversial, and avoid those ones? Or at least space them out between 100 non-controversial ones?? Seriously, there's no other admin that a month after being adminned, I have to read about them three times in a week. Please... go and be as boringly productive as possible. Hundreds of other users manage it every single day. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:01, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do not worry, I am not seeking a prize :P
Have you reviewed my contribution history? I have made hundreds of deletions. I have cleared two months worth of backlog from CAT:Unknown with over a thousand deletions. I am holding back on contributing to wikipedia as per real life issues (including the preparations wikipedia related panel on a conference in Turkey) taking too much of my time
I am not in any way stressed by all these incidents. The issue about 'Moby Dick' and 'Karl Meier' did raise concerns on my part but those concerns do not exist anymore as per the recent incident.
I am not particularly happy appearing on the ANB either.

Commons:Category scheme Italy[edit]

Maybe it's time to get contributions from other people; I've intended the schema only as a proposal that will serve as baseline for the discussion. Do you think it's time to put a message in the italian bar in order to get other contributions? --mac 13:22, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you reached some sort of consensus with mac9? So, may I carry on with my uploads? Details can be worked out, as usual. But a minimal base of agreement (i.e. "categories are NOT forbidden on Italian entries") is necessary... :-) --G.dallorto 14:15, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't agree at all with Mr. Dall'Orto but I was wrong with him and I hope he'd accepted my excuses for my behaviour. --mac 14:39, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy we found a consensus and I thank mac9 for his kind message, I appreciate it and I am only glad to cooperate with him in improving the italian pages on Commons. We both like this work, so ther eis no reason why we should be fighting about it. I confirm to Pfctdayelise that actually no, I am not obsessed with category names. I shall adapt to them once they are agreed upon, unless they contain typos or are patently anti-historical (e.g. American presidends of Italy). And if they change, well, I shall change too. I wish a profitful work to you all. --G.dallorto 14:51, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Baseline[edit]

You should let whoever wants to, edit the page. You don't "own" it, you and I and Juiced lemon don't "own" it, everyone owns it and everyone can edit it. But anything that is not agreed with, should be discussed straight away on the talk page.

I don't want to own the schema, but what if we discuss on a schema and in the meantime the schema is changed? It can happen that we have just loose time. So it was just a way to start a discussion on a coherent base, not to own a solution? --mac 14:23, 17 November 2006 (UTC)..a starting point, wherever is it, it's needed...--mac 14:23, 17 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

I make your comment mine and I'll start a discussion. let's say, I don't like the name for a category, I will not change the name of that category directly in the schema but I will statr a discussion on that point untill we reach an agreement. In this sense I don't own the schema, but I will use it as a base, arbitrary of course, to reach a general agreement. --mac 14:31, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Browsing path[edit]

The idea, of course it's just mine, is to let people to reach categories through different paths, in order to make easier to find out the searched photos or pages. For examples, Rivers of Lazio, can be reached by browsing from Lazio category or from Rivers of Italy category. This is a possible choise; the other is to construct an unique brwosing path from wich a category can be reached, like Lemon seems to build his paths. --mac 14:59, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Advise[edit]

I put the following advise here. this is the transalation. After long discussion with admin User:Pfctdayelise I was almost oblied ( I suppose in order to expiate my faults ) to create this schema Commons:Category scheme Italy; it's only a proposal , an incomplete baseline, from wich start (it could be build in 1000 other ways) to get a common and shared category structure between us.

The idead is to have a tree category path starting from category Italy ( that will be our root category ) shared and funcitonal for our purposes.

The baseline is not yet completed, some categories are missing, so where it is incomplete we can just update the schema with a proposal; where there is already a proposed schema, althought it's stupid, the idea is to discuss first in the related section of the discussion page in order to get a common agreement ( this way the discussion remains consistent during the time and thorugh different users).

Let's see what happen. Good w.e, --mac 15:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)--mac 15:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

pages vs categories[edit]

I've red the link you provided me: Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote. So I'm not the only one. Have you ever thought to have a mixed solution, like this? Have categories, like Paris, and create automaticly with a bot (if it's possible) a subcategory with a fixed naming convention, like Paris\Photo galleries (or whatever) for each category. The bot can also scan for photos into the categories and move them into the Photo gallery dedicated category. This way I (and the other the prefer the page solution ) are not bothered by waiting tousend of photos to be upload, and you are not bothered to create a page for each photo you upload. Again, good w.e. --mac 16:52, 17 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Hi.

I'm almost sure your the one that's inserting those not-exactly white pictures near the edges, and I'm here to complain ;). Whenever you can please those grey or almost grey pictures somewhere in the corners. There are still some slots available there. You can also switch some images that are white and are in corners now with those that aren't so white (and more like grey). Someone also put in some almost completely white images as blue ones... Well I just hopes that's not your graffiti ;).

Anyway you can use dimension checker + title display, to insert and move images more easily. I'll try to rearrange some in next week, just please be more careful.

Hello Pfctdayelise. Thanks for cat anatomy. Yes, nice pictures in there. You did a good job too! One question about cats: don't you think "cats by colour" is redondant with "cats by patten"? For example Tortoiseshell cats is a color as well as a 3 colors pattern, it's confusing. I would prefer only one category "cats by patten" and only in the case of "solid cats" have "cats by colour", because we never now where to search (and categorise). Brown category is still a mess, do you think usefull to keep it? PS. I found more evidentely brown cats, I think now it's ok. I moved also a lot of Domestic cats in other categ. and redirect cat. "European shorthair" > cat. "European" (so that some middlehaired or british can be included). Is it ok? --Salix 13:40, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I complained on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Vandalism#Vandalism by IP 84.120.248.119, user:Martorell immediatly answered. It seems to be a very curious coincidence when you look at the Martorell's history: no edits between October, 28 and January, 3rd.

Now, he have threated to block me if I don't restore Martorell's revisions of pages regarding this dispute. This user don't contribute to the project, but he continues to contribute to conflicts...

I do not appreciate your deletion[edit]

The majority of the files you deleted, were related to other WikiBook entries, and Wikipedia Articles as supporting documents. You alone diminish the quality of those entries and articles by your actions. I hope you feel good about yourself. Paul.Paquette 00:45, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome?[edit]

I find it a bit odd to be given a welcome message after having uploaded about a thousand images. Was there any particular occasion? Unless you object, I'd like to remove it from my user talk page, since it could easily give someone the misimpression that I've only recently become active. (In fact, I am an administrator on en:, with over 50,000 edits there).

If I don't hear from you in the next few days, I will assume that you do not mind my removing the message from my user talk page. - en:Jmabel | talk | Commons talk 04:44, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I belatedly noticed that it is not dated, so I guess I will leave it as harmless. Sorry to bother you. - en:Jmabel | talk | Commons talk 04:47, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
On en:, at least, welcome messages (which are usually signed and dated there) usually show up on someone's user talk page very shortly after their first substantive contribution. Especially on a user talk page without much activity, they tend to indicate roughly when someone first became active. - en:Jmabel | talk 04:57, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I checked some of my older Images and found your Page. And now I'm very interestet in the sense of this pages :) would you explain it to me? --Stefan-Xp 21:20, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Vlc screenshot.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Expermental fiddling or vandalism[edit]

Hi and Happy New Year! You may want to look at User talk:Duesentrieb#Suspicious and seemingly nonsensical edits and keep an eye out for this in anti-vandalism patrols, etc. As you can see, I think I know the culprit, and my next post is to our Vandalism in progress page to sharpen the oversight on this guy (kid, I suspect. Most arguments went "delete pixelated" or "delete unpixelated" or a combination, or being unspecific. Which version do you think we should delete? We as admins have to use our judgement and not go by votes. This image (pixelated) is being used on English Wikipedia (checkusage works for it now , that's way cool) and English wikinews so unless there's any outstanding concern I don't think we should delete it. Didn't mindspillage argue to delete the unpixelated version? So confusing... concluding -- WE NEED AN ADMIN WITH A GOOD JUDGEMENT (with this I mean he/she should agree with me ;-)))).

POTY 2006 gallery[edit]

  • Alvesgaspar, I protected the page. I wanted to stop people vandalising it by adding or removing or changing numbers.

I didn't understand what you meant by 'consensus', but I do now. I think it will only become important in the last couple of days, right? Because until then the volume of votes will be overwhelming. So having a scrambled gallery (at least until then) is no problem. Also, people can find the images by number by doing a Ctrl+F Find using their browser. cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 23:38, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Thank you for your explanation. Yes, I was offended for having been taken for a vandal after all the work of preparation for the POTY 2006. But I suppose I'll have to live with it. I now think that the election period is too long, 7-10 days would have been enough. The problem is that after this first flood of voting people will become less interested in the contest. We will have to find ways to bring them back by the end of the period. I have inserted a discrete link for an ordered list of pictures in the POTY 2006 gallery. It is useful to me and it will be also to other users. A chinese version of all the the titles in the page would be nice. Regards, - Alvesgaspar 09:55, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Abandoning the POTY 2006 project[edit]

  • Thank you for your words and concern. But how can I come back? First, I was already accused of manipulative behaviour [29] (maybe to come back in triumph?...). Second, though there seems to be a clear consensus towards facilitating the access to a sorted list of pictures (see here), nothing has really changed: there is one user giving orders and the others complaining ... but obeying. Alvesgaspar 13:22, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elise - thanks for your message. I am new to Commons but working with a couple of other editors on this project. Are you saying that I can fix what I have started simply by moving all of the articles I have created of the Towns of the Riverina, New South Wales simply by moving all of them to a similar page name without the word images in it? Is that all I have to do? If so I will start the move tomorrow. I very much appreciate your help and clarification. VirtualSteve 15:04, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Sorry to bug you on your too-busy talk page, but you have been enormously helpful in the past, so you are the first one I turn to, now.

How do I go about 'bot approval for User:Dvortybot? It is a bot to upload .ogg files from User:Dvortygirl in batches of 100 files at a time (once a day/once a week) that she would otherwise be uploading manually, slowly. Is bot approval needed/recommended for that sort of thing?

I just find myself sitting in front of the computer for hours and forgetting about sleep, eat, drink when I wiki in any format - so to counter (no pun intended) I set myself a reasonable between target in terms of number of edits and then turn the machine off when I get there. It's my way of keeping sane. To answer your question - I hope ..... NSD[edit]

Hi,

Yes, that's what I do, at least when it is clear that the uploader is not the author of the image. The problem is people putting fake licence because they don't know what a licence means. In quite a lot of cases, the author just forgets to put a licence even if he is the author of the image. Even I do that. In that case, we shouldn't delete the image, I think. What would help is not using the VfD process when there is a copyright issue. Still a lot of images get listed on Requests for deletion in that case. Yann 04:23, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

question[edit]

Hi, 've been away for quite a long time, and probably not able to become very active again here, to my dismay. Is there a procedure for taking away adminship because of inactivity here? If so please advise me how much work I'd need to do to avoid such a procedure. Because images are quite broadly discussed on nl. at the moment, mostly because of a merciless cleaning-out campaign by User:Siebrand, and "Commons-paranoia" is starting to flare up a bit as well (if you're talking images, you can't miss Commons alas), I'd like to keep my admin buttons, so I can check out deleted images and stuff. Second question: on Commons:Deletion requests/Category:Canadiens de Montréal I said category redirects can be used on Commons, but I've been away for a long time, so I'm actually not sure of the truth of that statement. Could you shed some light on this? I ask you all of this because you always were one of the people that kept Commons working by your effort, might you have stepped back, never mind, I'll ask someone else. Cheers, NielsF talk/overleg/discussion/discussione 04:17, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Siebrand's being a lot stricter than anyone has been over the past, so anything not 100% sourced gets nominated, that's generating a lot of hubbub, especially with some of the "older editors" of nl.wiki, because in the early times strict policy and very clear, linked information was less important than another editor's word. Considering the Commons part: it's more that whenever the words "images" and "strict policy" are combined, Commons automatically comes into view. Whether that's a bad or a good thing "I leave in the middle" (literally translated Dutch). Because of the myriad mazes of copyright, usually Commons is badly understood at nl:, most users don't even begin to grasp Dutch/Belgian copyright law, let alone international treaties and US copyright law (although I admit to try, it's in a way actually far too complex for amateurs to handle). PS: could you answer my second question about categories? PS 2: Does Commons have any trouble with uploads from nl: users? For a couple of weeks now, the upload page on nl: doesn't allow direct uploads anymore, but points to Commons and the local upload page. Sorry to bother you so much!
Cheers, NielsF talk/overleg/discussion/discussione 04:45, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, missed your intervention concerning [Commons:Deletion requests/Category:Canadiens de Montréal]], consider that one question as not having been asked. NielsF talk/overleg/discussion/discussione 05:02, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As for the uploads, we typically see a reduction in uploads of 50%, so my guess is the other 50% ends up here (between 30-40 images/day). We have a table with some numbers here. Cheers! Siebrand 23:57, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

POTY 2006 vote counting[edit]

I have completed the verifications in all voting archives (1 to 5). The lists of anomalies are in the archives talk pages (see Commons:Picture of the Year/2006#vote). From these, you can go ahead with the counting. Bryan is doing an independ verification. Alvesgaspar 15:32, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I went through your file and the following lines of voting are missing:
    • Archive 5: User 212.202.240.226 (stricken in the vote page but validated later): 32, 291, 82, 30, 270
    • Archive 4: User 84.194.255.233: 69, 49, 21, 265, 305
    • Archive 3: User IronGargoyle: 250, 137, 243, 61, 110
    • Archive 2: User Pruthvi Vallabh: 72, 121, 130, 159, 254 and User Falense: 187, 61, 284, 176, 303

I also corrected the two mistakes in my files that you flagged. But there are still some small discrepancies in the number of votes of the best classified pics. Alvesgaspar 09:22, 16 February 2007 (UTC) [reply]

question[edit]

How did I guess that would be the answer <g>. The <100 and anon I can do easily but I was not sure what you did if there was not a "valid" diff - do you follow it up on their talk page or what?
You'll get used to me saying it but I'll help if I can (simple stuff I can usually manage!). Cheers --Herby talk thyme

Reply: POTY[edit]

Why is my vote not valid? Is it edit count? I posted with both my Commons user name and my English Wiki name, which as of this post has 1176 edits. I provided both because I have a Commons account (that has less than 100 edits) but a En wiki account that has significantly more. Am I only supposed to vote with one? Thanks. Poty archive[edit]

You might want to look at http://tools.wikimedia.de/~bryan/poty. The zip is quite on its way. If you have any improvements, please tell. -- Bryan (talk to me) 22:41, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I still have to check the diacritics stuff. I also have to redo some license stuff. I also will add the pre next links. I hope to release a preview to night to the Commons community, so that we have a zip at the end of the election. The stuff now resides at the toolserver, but I am afraid keeping it there will slashdot the toolserver. Do you know who/where/what I should contact to get it on the main servers? -- Bryan (talk to me) 12:55, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Invalid votes[edit]

  • Alvesgaspar, be careful striking some votes where the voter appears to have linked to a userpage elsewhere, like Tixotd here. As his signature, part of his sig links to enwp, but not all of it. This is a valid vote, although you struck it out (I haven't changed it yet, since I assume you will). So be careful to check for those things. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:24, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
  • But according to the instructions (and Bryan's guide), it is not enough to insert a link to the user's talk page. It is necessary to assert the identity of the voter through a new entry in his talk page and a diff link to it in the voting entry. That is not the case with Tixotd and then his vote is invalid. Alvesgaspar 13:46, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I set sysop status at first, and tried to grant bot status after and got MediaWiki Update Bot has administrator or bureaucrat privileges, and cannot be granted bot status. May be developers could do something? --EugeneZelenko 15:46, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Try adding the bot flag first, then the sysop flag. If that doesn't work, let me know. (I will try and get a steward to remove the sysop flag now.) pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:02, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It works this way! Is developers still accept bug reports and trying to fix problems such problems? :-) --EugeneZelenko 16:21, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re A_general_proposal_to_reduce_gallery/category_fights[edit]

Hi, being newish here I've been doing the usual head scratching about what on earth the standard category/gallery setup is meant to be and reading endless discussions (well I haven't found the end yet ;-). Anyway I came to a reference to your proposal: Commons:Village_pump_archive/2006Oct#A_general_proposal_to_reduce_gallery.2Fcategory_fights which seems admirably sensible and didn't have any objectors - so is it implemented (if so where), if not why not and can I help??? :-) --Tony Wills 19:32, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply :-). I am currently working through the Birds categories (where I may have wrought minor havok, though no ones undone anything I've changed yet). The more I tried to sort out, the more I realised conformity wasn't part of how different people organised things ;-). I finally stumbled upon the ToL project (none of the articles or categories I worked on had any reference to it which seems pretty strange compared with wikipedia projects where projects stamp their mark everywhere) and I have started a new discussion on the talk page, but haven't mentioned your proposal as I wanted to check out its status first. Seems to me that discussion never results in any change, is seldom summarised and somewhat repetitive and where there are links to previous discussions or points they're hard to follow a month later as they've subsequently been archived. Having read many pages of discussion and the saga of the LifeBot, your solution seems to solve the 'how do we mark already sorted stuff' or 'how do we find unsorted stuff' problems independently of the gallery/category thing and I've not seen any reason not to use it, I'd very much like to roll it's use out in a category (just manually so no-one can block it ;-) and see how it goes. --Tony Wills 05:55, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I have created template:Project, eg usage {{Project|Tree of Life}}. What do you think? Any changes before I roll it out :-) --Tony Wills 02:19, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well the if statement was so that it wouldn't print anything on the image page unless there was a parameter giving a project name. Surely it won't load the tool server unless you update the template and it needs to update all images using it? ... will that consideration mean it is impractical to use on plants anyway? Perhaps we'd have to set in concrete the template so that it isn't changed often. After creating the template I realised that the Cat_Scan wouldn't be able to differentiate between different projects (as they'd all be using the same template). You could of course confine the scan to particular categories, too bad if an image fell into two wikiprojects. I thought the template was an elegant solution that could be used across many projects, seems a bit clumsy to create a separate template for each project. There is of course no wikiproject birds anyway, so it'd be a template for all ToL (including zillions of plants). --Tony Wills 10:56, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ok, why don't I start a WikiProject Birds and make a template WikiProject_Birds containing no conditionals, just text (though an Icon or Box might be nice in the future :-) --Tony Wills 22:29, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

where should I ask about Image:IMG 9397.jpg[edit]

I think that image is a copyvio because the very same image appears in wikipedia under the gfdl, and there's a name in the corner. What template/what page do i put it. Bawolff 08:19, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Naked children[edit]

You said, "Doesn't mean we should keep it, either, but I'm convinced that these are overtly sexual." Is that what you meant? Cary "Bastiqe" Bass demandez 01:19, 13 March 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Yes, I noticed my stupidity about a minute after editing it (what's even more annoying is that the edit went through three times because it gave me the standard server is down message) and asked the devs to clear the job queue, unfortunately nobody replied but of course I won't make the same mistake again. Sorry again. Yonatanh 23:43, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Main page[edit]

Sure, I guess I'll put the POTY there instead? The translation is "local projects" and it's a list of pages that need to be translated (and a link to the Hebrew village pump). I suppose I'll probably translate them soon anyway and that if none of the Hebrew main page visitors have translated them up 'til now they won't do so if I leave it up there. Yonatanh 00:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, on an unrelated note I thought I'd tell you that something good came out of my edits to the GFDL template as I submitted a bugzilla report that will prevent edits to noinclude sections of templates from being added to the job queue (as it's obviously not needed). That'll hopefully, when implemented, save more server resources than I just wasted. ;) Yonatanh 00:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Another question (they just keep coming up as I go along), earlier today on IRC bastique suggested we get a lady's opinion on Image:Ejaculation_Educational_Demonstration.OGG (NSFW). I'm nominating its GIF version for deletion as a redundant copy now. Yonatanh 00:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replacing images[edit]

See User:Orgullobot/commands/documentation#To_replace_one_image_with_another. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:36, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The bot can not replace JPGs, GIFs or PNGs files with SVGs. So that does not really help. --ALE! ¿…? 08:56, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It can, but I asked Orgullomoore to place tha restriction because I was worried about rampant replacing of all non-SVG images with SVG images, even when inappropriate. Maybe you remember we have had some trouble with this in the past. I posted to the mailing lists and asked for input about guidelines on this. Virtually no one replied. What do you think about this situation? --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:40, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is, that almost nobody is working on the "superseded section" of the deletion requests. Some PNGs (or such) which are to be replaced by mostly SVGs look the same. Guidelines for the bot assited replacement of other files then SVGs with SVGs should mention, that should only be done with "identical" files, looking the same. We had for instance to replace GIF and PNG versions of the olympic rings with SVGs, which looked absolutly the same and have considerable advantages as they are vector files. However this is a very annoying task as some files are used in hundreds of pages. To do change the usages by hand is almost not possible. Especially bearing in mind that almost nobody works on the superseded files. --ALE! ¿…? 15:27, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to butt in but I agree, an admin should probably know better than to replace a png with an inappropriate svg (then again an admin should know better than to stupidly edit a high-use template). I'd probably work more on the superseded section if it were easier to replace the images. Yonatanh 23:45, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose you're probably right and you guys probably had a good reason to decide this back then. Maybe we can make a rule that if a highly used png has been replaced by an svg two admins have to agree that it needs to be replaced? Or that we have to ask at least the project it's used the most on (or the first two projects). Anyway, there's no point in creating svg replacements if they aren't gonna be used instead of the png's. Yonatanh 23:52, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I absolutely agree with Yonatanh on this. --ALE! ¿…? 10:22, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Checkuser[edit]

I believe it would be beneficial for the commons community if you were to become a checkuser. While I seem to recall that you didn't view checkuser as especially useful, it is useful at times and all the more so if a checkuser is available realtime to check a vandals IP before his edits are deleted. We currently do not have active checkusers. As a result I've decided to ask the community for checkuser status. I've noticed in the IRC activity graphs that your activity times are opposite mine and would compliment my activity times nicely. If you're interested, you can model a RFCU after mine. --Gmaxwell 18:35, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Gmaxwell that we need more active CUs and I think you are an ideal candidate, I'd encourage you to stand for it, even though I know that your school year is making things busier for you... ++Lar: t/c 19:09, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Concur :D I think you very much that you will be a great candidate for Checkuser. If you don't want to nominate yourself, I can of course nominate you. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:55, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have nominated you here: Commons:Administrators/Requests_and_votes/Pfctdayelise_(rfcu). Please accept. If you don't accept, you will hurt my feelings. Therefore you must. Cary "Bastiqe" Bass demandez 02:07, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rather than replying on four different talk pages, I will reply on my own for once: Gmaxwell: did you check the IRC logs since March? Because then you would not notice much activity at all. I expect/hope this to be my pattern for 2007, not the summer's frenzied involvement. :)

It may indeed be beneficial for the Commons community, but I am not sure it would be beneficial for me. I only have so much to give and I aim for a long and fruitful relationship with Wikimedia rather than one that burns out due to overwork. CU is about vandal fighting and it's of almost no interest to me. I am much more interested in community management.

Lar & Bryan: thanks, I am sure that if I stood I would be successful. Lack of support is not holding me back. Personal will is.

Bastique: coercion makes studying monk cry:

Thanks all, try again next year ;) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:35, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arggghh! You deleted! You could have simply refused but you went and deleted it!! Arghhh! Cary Bass demandez 13:53, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ooops - shouldn't eavesdrop <g>. I've been writing something up about increasing CUs here for a couple of weeks now! It bugs me to see us dealing with users who cannot or will not understand policy, are blocked and (cynic that I am) have done the same before/will do the same again (I stress puppetry is not the issue, it is peripheral on Commons, maybe most places other than wp). The rights should be be gained by active trusted sysops and used - my 0.02 and I'll happily air the views more publicly. I'm certainly happy to nom at least a couple of people who active and trusted. Adminship for Tintazul[edit]

I did not express myself correctly; of course I intend to do adminship on Commons! I have reworded my text; please go back to the nomination page and review your vote. – Tintazul talk 11:21, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sour? Not at all! ^_^ If anything, I get a feeling that adminship is a lot about leaving editing and uploading behind quite a bit, and dedicating myself to meta-activities... talking about stuff rather than doing it. It also seems to be about serving as a target for other people's anger... that guy who said he's not voting in favour because he's upset with someone? Oh please. And yet, I remember times in my life when I was so frustrated, I would have done the same thing if I could, so I think I can understand. Not right now, so I'm all right - I will keep up the uploading, FlickrLickr, voting for deletion, etc. etc.. Thank you very much for your words - and even for not supporting me but giving me your neutral vote! Let's be honest; I like being a regular editor. Being an admin would spoil the fun a lot! Stay well – Tintazul talk 18:31, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly Unfree Image[edit]

Image:InaugurationOWUHuddleston.jpg seems to be taken from here on the Ohio Wesleyan University website, so it is copyrighted, not GFDL. I am used to en wikipedia templates and did not know how to flag it as copyvio (tried PUI templates). Thanks, Ruhrfisch 02:02, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RfX/inactivity[edit]

Maybe - we arrange to ask a question consistently to all on RfX about inactivity? Policy will take time but there seem to be people who would agree with our ideas in general (I'm assuming we agree roughly!?). This might start to underpin a policy suggestion. I also feel there is a sense in which CU inactivity is more of an issue than admin - there are far fewer, when it is needed it is needed and even meta think inactivity is an issue on these rights.

When I arrived on Books they had gone through an apparently painful process of changing to de-sysop after a year's inactivity (editing). I threw in the "surely you mean admin activity?" but was told that the admin activity tool didn't record all admin actions (tho I can't find the comment to follow up on now).

In practice I would have no problem with 6+ months inactivity if they told us about it - an acknowledged break seems ok to me. I will happily agree to any "question" on this I might have been asked on my RfA retrospectively - maybe a few others would agree too? (On Books both my RfA and my RfCU stated that I would request the withdrawal of the rights if I was inactive for 3 months, I would consider myself bound by the same here). Maybe hear from you - cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:15, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unusual for me - I'm going to think about it! Not sure that picking one of the most junior admins who does not want to annoy folk at the moment to put up a policy that may annoy folk is quite what I had in mind (you should know that when I am not being serious, I am frequently being lighthearted, I had to warn Wikibooks that my posts often contain humor!).
Scraps
Admin is a "mop and broom" job IMO - no reverence required/involved but "Admins & power" is a difficult one - I basically abandoned an account on Wp because, among other reasons, I saw some admins as appearing to have, and take, power and be unresponsive to "ordinary" users (I see it should be the other way round actually - they are there to help ordinary users - my 0.02). I quite like confirmation but I think it would probably be an unnecessary pain. I certainly prefer "admin activity" to anything else. Not aware anyone else sees CU (stewards and higher I guess excepted) but it is seen across all wikis. Agree "edit" active 'crats are not an issue - there are rarely too many of them. (in a sense that maybe is the case for CU, not sure and maybe too involved).
The rationale/perception etc I get to think about - not online tomorrow but I will be thinking. --Herby talk thyme 11:47, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It really isn't a problem to me - humor was there. I'll happily help, though I don't know enough about Commons yet and - sometimes - rules & I don't see eye to eye <g>. It will get thought and you will have a response I assure you --Herby talk thyme 13:12, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

I see you've removed from your page the threat of blocking anyone who thanks you for voting in their RFA. So I hope I'm safe :) Here goes ...Thanks for voting in my RFA. I've been too busy at work do any Admin stuff yet, but will make a start soon. --MichaelMaggs 20:00, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dude, don't thank her for voting. She'll kill you. Seriously. Cary Bass demandez 20:48, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hereby officially rescind my thanks. --MichaelMaggs 21:25, 30 March 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Not sure if this is within commons policy, but currently Image:Freedomdefined-CC-BY.png is a very very high visibility image on wikinews (Its in the footer), I was wondering if you could protect it, as it really probably won't be changed that often, and if someone vandalized it, it would not be good. Thanks. Bawolff 23:04, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

done —n:Wikinews:Important images not directly link that if are deleted you will incur many peoples wrath. Bawolff 00:06, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Eloquence changed to Image:CCBY yellow.png. Could you perhaps do that one? Bawolff 06:45, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS and Flickr[edit]

Hi there. I'm doing some Flickr-license reviewing and came across an image that had an OTRS link in it, so could you probably review this image? Thanks in advance! --Conti| 23:07, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. I just didn't knew whether I should replace the Flickr-review template as usual, since that would indicate that I have verified the OTRS stuff or something. I've gone ahead and did it anyway now tho, adding a note that the image should be fine. --Conti| 15:05, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

??[edit]

Are you around and have you got a minute? Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:21, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redesigning the upload form[edit]

Hi. I have now translated Commons:Upload/no and the upload forms. Can your bot fix the MediaWiki message problem? Kjetil r 23:19, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
