Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Hi, Alvaro Molina, Question: Would an image titled "George-Washington's horse.jpg" warrant a change? I honestly want to know. I believe "george washington's horse.jpg" does.

Overwriting existing files[edit]

Image editing[edit]

Please do not modify the files of the "Phoebus Project". You have no abilitation for this project is a partnership signed between Wikipedia and the museum of Toulouse. You accidentally attributed quality and value labels to the modified images that were not obtained by the votes. The modifications have been necessary. An image is subject to an erase request. Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019[edit]

Bonjour,

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est de retour et ouvert jusqu'à 31 septembre ! Déjà 8310 photos ont été importés cette année, vous aussi rejoignez le concours !

Le concours concerne tous les monuments présents dans la base Mérimée (qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement classés). De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la chapelle au coin de la rue aux mégalithes en forêt, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Où que vous soyez il y a des monuments autour de chez vous. Enfin, vous pouvez mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments. Pour information, le règlement est disponible sur le site du concours. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international sélectionnera ensuite des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Dear User-duck In the past, you contributed to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "transportation" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa. As with previous years, there are also many exciting cash prizes. Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. Images from the competition have helped millions learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed 18,000 images about Africa. When does it take place? The 2020 competition will start on the 15th of February 2020 and close on 31st March 2020. What should we contribute? Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2020 contest is... Africa on the Move ! This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. oggi ti scrivo a nome dell'associazione Wikimedia Italia per ringraziarti di aver partecipato a Wiki Loves Monuments Italia. Il tuo contributo è particolarmente apprezzato perché hai caricato molteplici foto per Wiki Loves Monuments.

Come piccolo omaggio avremmo piacere di spedirti una copia (tutta in carta riciclata) del libro di Carlo Piana, Open source, software libero e altre libertà. Fornisci un recapito per ricevere una copia del libro.

Il libro comprende anche un capitolo sul tuo lavoro! Si parla infatti di libertà di panorama, cioè la libertà di fare e diffondere foto come le tue, ma tutto l'anno e su tutti i monumenti d'Italia. Вікі любить пам'ятки 2021 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Ukraine[edit]

Привіт!

З 1 по 30 вересня вже традиційно пройде українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже вдесяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. Як і того року — у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» можна отримати 21 бал за фотографії об'єктів, якщо світлин цієї пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року вперше будуть окремо виділені фото з повітря (дронами, квадрокоптерами тощо) — у спеціальній номінації «Аерофото». Для того, щоб робота потрапила на спецномінацію потрібно вибрати її у Завантажувачі.

Також вперше проводиться спеціальна номінація «Пам'ятки Подесення», знову пройдуть спецномінації «Відео», «Єврейська спадщина», «Млини», «Пам'ятки національно-визвольної боротьби» та «Via Regia Ukraine». Для участі світлин у цих спецномінаціях не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — світлини зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

Ви можете користуватися тими новими списками, що вже є, якщо потрібно відшукати пам'ятку за новим поділом (деякі ОДА вже почали присилати у такому форматі), але пам'ятайте, що нові списки ще не є повними.

Привіт!

Нагадуємо, що до 30 вересня включно можна вантажити світлини та відео культурної спадщини України до національного етапу міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»!

Зараз Україна посідає 3-є місце за кількістю завантажених світлин, поступаючись Російській Федерації та Німеччині. За першу половину місяця було завантажено світлини пам'яток із усіх регіонів України, але частина із них є дуже погано представлена. Севастополь зараз представлений тільки однією пам'яткою і одним фото, Крим — 12 пам'яток і 51 фото. Детальніше — у таблиці:

Цього року у конкурсі є вісім спеціальних номінацій:

«Аерофото» — для фото з повітря (зроблені дронами, квадрокоптерами тощо). Для того, щоб робота потрапила на спецномінацію потрібно вибрати її у Завантажувачі;
«Відео» — для відеосюжетів з пам'ятками;
«Єврейська спадщина» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;
«Млини» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;
«Пам'ятки національно-визвольної боротьби» — для об'єктів із охоронним статусом, і без нього;

Plus que quelques jours pour participer à Wiki Loves Monuments France ![edit]

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est ouvert pour une semaine encore, jusqu'au 30 septembre. Déjà plus de 6 000 photos ont été importées cette année alors vous aussi rejoignez le concours ! Cette campagne de contribution concerne tous les monuments et objets mobiliers présents dans la base Mérimée et dans la base Palissy. De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la verrière décorative au reliquaire, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Vous pouvez dès à présent mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments et objets du patrimoine français. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international constituera ensuite une sélection des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015, Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

Долучіться до опитування — допоможіть визначити, як проводити конкурс «Вікі любить пам’ятки» у 2022 році[edit]

Вітаємо! Ви отримуєте це повідомлення, бо брали участь в українській частині міжнародного конкурсу «Вікі любить пам’ятки» у минулі роки. Зараз організаційна команда конкурсу вирішує, як проводити його під час повномасштабної війни в Україні.

Ми розуміємо, що цього року ми не зможемо провести конкурс у звичному форматі — зокрема тому, що фотографування об'єктів в Україні зараз ускладнене міркуваннями безпеки. Однак наша місія із документування української культурної спадщини є як ніколи важливою, тому розглядаємо варіанти, як можна провести конкурс у обмеженому форматі.

Для цього хочемо запитати поради у спільноти конкурсу. Просимо приділити 5—7 хвилин (не пізніше середи, 6 липня), щоби висловити свою думку.

Removing categories[edit]

Hi! Please do not remove categories if they are correct. In this case Revision of 655709781 the sculpture is visible and described. @XRay: . I apologize for my mistake. I thought the trio was mis-categorized. I now understand why these images are in so many categories. There is a 4th image, 9315-21, that has "Zwei Pferde" in the background. I assume reflections do not count, there are several of those. User-duck (talk) 04:59, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I categorize my pictures as good as possible - partly with my bot. There are quite a few more categories. I also use the bot to derive the structured data. There are people who categorize only very sparingly, because they want it that way or because the category system is too cumbersome for them. Please be careful while cropping[edit]

Hi! If you create a cropped image like File:Münster, LVM, Skulptur -Zwei Pferde- 5969-75.jpg please add yourself as creator of the derivate file. You are responsible for the extracted version. And please fix description and categorization. As author of the origin I do not support the derivates made by third parties. Please respect the license conditions. Also see Commons:Overwriting existing files and please don't overwrite the original file where it's controversial. It's better to upload a cropped version into a separate file, so that the original still remains, especially when it specifically requests this on the file description page. Вікі любить пам'ятки 2022 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine[edit]

Привіт!

Цього року українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки» пройде з 1 по 31 жовтня — через російське вторгнення в Україну також довелося змінити умови: тільки світлини зроблені до 23 лютого 2022 року включно будуть прийматися в основній частині конкурсу.

В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже водинадцяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. Як і того року — у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» можна отримати 21 бал за фотографії об'єктів, якщо світлин цієї пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року знову пройде спецномінація «Відео» — для участі робіт у цій спецномінації не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — роботи зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

5 днів Вікі любить пам'ятки 2022 в Україні / 5 days of Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine[edit]

Привіт!

Українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки» вже почалася — за 5 днів фотозмагання Україна вийшла на 12-е місце за кількістю світлин у світі. Не кількістю єдиною, звісно, але гарно було б не надто сильно відстати від російської частини конкурсу, і хоча б потрапити до почесних топ-5.

Цього року вперше у конкурсі є спеціальна номінація «Фотоплівка» — на неї можна подавати скани світлин, зроблених на фотоплівці — мова може йти й про скани самої фотоплівки і скани з віддрукованих знімків із неї. Ця спецномінація покликана мотивувати оцифровувати й ділитися своїми фотоархівами: частина об'єктів уже виглядає дуже відмінно, а частина — більше не існує… Враховуючи сучасну ситуацію із російським вторгненням і можливість потенційної втрати таких фотоархівів, ця спецномінація — актуальна. Врахуйте, що для того, щоб світлина потрапила на спецномінацію, потрібно вибрати відповідне поле у Завантажувачі.

Автори світлин маловідомих пам'яток України зможуть позмагатися за відзнаку від «Україна Інкогніта».

Також уже традиційно пройде спецномінація «Відео» — для участі робіт у цій спецномінації не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — роботи зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Ще 3 дні! Вікі любить пам'ятки 2022 в Україні триває до 31 жовтня / Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine[edit]

Привіт! Сподіваємося, що ви та ваша родина у безпеці. Нагадуємо, що залишилося три дні до завершення конкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки», і якщо у вас є можливість взяти участь у конкурсі цього року — долучайтеся!

Трохи статистики за результатами чотирьох тижнів конкурсу:

завантажено понад 11000 світлин, які зображують майже 3700 об’єктів культурної спадщини;
- з них фотографії 180 пам'яток — вперше подані на конкурс;
понад 500 світлин подано у спецномінації «Фотоплівка»;
вже більше 220 учасників та учасниць;
- з них більше 130 — зареєструвалися вже під час конкурсу.

Найменш представлені регіони — Севастополь (1 фото), Донецька (19), Миколаївська (20), Кіровоградська (58), Крим (72), Херсонська (74) та Луганська (80). Конкурсні списки за регіонами можна переглянути тут: списки пам'яток.

Привіт! Сподіваємося, що у Вас та Ваших рідних усе максимально добре. Нагадуємо, що конкурс триває до 31 жовтня. За перший тиждень конкурсу в українській частині конкурсу завантажено понад 4000 фото, взяли участь майже 90 учасників.

Важливо! Через російське вторгнення в Україну також довелося змінити умови: тільки роботи зняті до 30 червня 2023 року включно будуть прийматися на конкурс. Єдиний виняток — спецномінація «Інтер'єри» можна подавати світлини без обмежень за датою створення.

У конкурсі є серйозне обмеження за часом створення фото- та відеоматерілів — тільки роботи зняті до 30 червня 2023 року включно приймаються. Однак, є виняток — спецномінація «Інтер'єри», де можна подавати файли, які зроблені й під час конкурсу. Overwriting existing files[edit]

Please see Commons:Overwriting existing files. Things like your recent overwrite at File:Nelson's 'Agamemnon' engaging four French frigates and a brig near Sardinia, 27 October 1793. RMG PW0007.jpg are generally more than a bad idea, the procedure is to upload the crop under a new filename.

Please reverse this unwitting piece of vandalism and upload your cropped version as a new file with the suffix (cropped). Clearly your unaware that the original file in this case was the complete historical document, and any cropping of it is a severe diminishment. This was not an "unwitting piece of vandalism". I have referred to Commons:Overwriting existing files many times as it often changes. It states: "As a result, the basic rule is: Existing files should not be overwritten with substantially different content. Minor improvements should overwrite the previous version (but see below for exceptions). When in doubt, or to resolve inter-user conflicts, upload as a new file." I do not considered the revised file to have substantially different content. I will revert the file and create a new file "to resolve inter-user conflicts".

I am not aware that Wikipedia is a repository for historical documents.

Removing parts of historical images.

The file description states: "The ink mount inscription is a relatively modern one, not by the artist." I did not consider it part of the historical image. Since the inscription is not part of the original artwork, partially cropped, and virtually illegible, I cropped it to improve the image for use in Wikipedia articles. Cropping when, you shouldn't[edit]

Here you go again cropping an historical image. This image in particular, is a postcard, and you've cropped out all the elements that confirm that. Tiff and png files are generally regarded as being reference files, if they are to be cropped or changed into jpegs's for use on websites, then that is achieved by making fresh copies. You need to read all the various policies regarding this matter. As a courtesy, which you clearly lack, you could look at my previous track record of uploads, and you will see that I have the technology to crop, rotate and convert formats to my hearts desire; and I dont, or do sparingly.
