File:Marc Nattier, Gilbert de Sève (1676).jpg[edit]

Hi, you identified the model of File:Marc Nattier, Gilbert de Sève (1676).jpg as Gilbert de Sève. Jocode states "Nicolas Loir ?". Do you know who identified him as Gilbert de Sève. A Google image search links to a "Collections : Seve Gilbert de" but somehow the image does not show up in the list. --Zolo (talk) 19:14, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your question, dear Zolo. It was Christoph Hardouin, in 1994 : [1], no. 50.
--Thorvaldsson (talk) 20:35, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. I have added it in the file so that it is clearer. Is it completely reliable ? I am just asking this because this is a "mémoire de DEA" (roughly a Master thesis), not a journal article by a fully established scholar. By the way I have removed the quotation marks in the French title. We generally dont use quotation marks in French for artwork and book titles (just for article titles). The template is supposed to automatically do the formatting work, so that it fits each language when a multilingual tag is used for translation.--Zolo (talk) 21:26, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
His proposed identification as well as attribution, Jean Tiger vs. Marc Nattier, are connected: [2]
In regard to the guillemets, it is a little bit more than a mere matter of style:
« Gilbert de Sève, peintre » (1615–1698) vs. Gilbert de Sève, peintre (1615–1698). However, it is probably rather inappropriate for a database content. If this is the case, I would consider removing them from ‘Russian’ as well. Thank you.
--Thorvaldsson (talk) 23:13, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. About the title, another solution could be to just put the person's name in the title and add the rest "depicted person". The main advantage of this system would be that it is more machine readable, and in time the system should be able to automatically add occupation and dates using info from creator templates, plus Russian and other transliterations using a dedicated extension Technically, this would not be that hard, but there are practical concerns (like expensiveness), and the main disadvantage of such a way of doing things would be that it would look rather heavy and redundant.--Zolo (talk) 11:55, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

user rights[edit]

I have upgraded your status to "autoconfirmed" user to signal other users they do not need to double check your edits. Nothing really special with it, just to let you know. I would have thought you already had that right. --Zolo (talk) 21:49, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know this.--Thorvaldsson (talk) 18:11, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry actually this is "autopatrolled" not "autoconfirmed" ;--Zolo (talk) 08:43, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thorvaldsson. Do you mean that the blue color cast reflected the original drawing color? I don't think so: the blue is too uniform, and it is quite apparent that it is an artificial color cast. I simply corrected the overall color so to obtain a white collar. Compare the other Commons versions: File:Maurice Quentin de La Tour - Self-Portrait - WGA12361.jpg, File:Delatourquentin.jpg, and the original upload of File:Maurice_Quentin_de_La_Tour_003.jpg (the most recent, blue, upload is the same file than the one I have corrected). --GianniG46 (talk) 07:03, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply, dear GianniG46.
please compare the following three photographs: before your colour adjustment, Agence Bulloz & after, [3]
The pastellist's background & suit are blue; his face, powdered wig, lace are illuminated by a blue, monochromatic light.

File:Attribué à Joseph Aved, Portrait de Jean-Philippe Rameau (vers 1728) - 001.jpg[edit]

Hello, you had recently commented on my edits to this painting: File:Attribué à Joseph Aved, Portrait de Jean-Philippe Rameau (vers 1728) - 001.jpg yet I am not totally clear what you mean. Could you clarify what you wish to change? Harpsichord246 (talk) 04:23, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply, dear Harpsichord246.
please compare the following three photographs: [4]; the first photograph, the most widely known, is by François Jay; the second one is the latest reproduction of the work and which had replaced the first one (see: Agence photographique de la Réunion des Musées Nationaux); the third one is your modification of the second, which is less transparent as the first photograph.

Where can I find a free version of the first image? - Harpsichord246 (talk) 05:30, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is this good now:

-- Harpsichord246 (talk) 05:56, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply, dear Harpsichord246. Clearly, we have two different approaches; even treating this portrait merely as an image of Rameau [5], it is the image of the work after conservation/restoration that reveals ‘better colour[s],’ using your expression. The sitter’s face re-emerged from ‘chiaroscuro,’ there is no more this dark stubble-like on his cheeks, his wig no longer looks ‘dusty,’ etc. [6]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
