First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

The {{FAL}} must be wrong, do you mean {{PD-art}}? If the photograph is licensed under FAL the copyright holder must agree to the license, if the author is unknown there cant be a written agreement. Ohrid[edit]

Hello,

as you probably noticed, I recategorized the pictures of Ohrid. I have problems with the categories Churches in Ohrid and Villages in Ohrid - isn't their content in fact wrong? As far as I know, Ohrid is just a city, and cities usually don't contain villages. Shouldn't the content be in Churches in Ohrid Municipality and Villages in Ohrid Municipality? I still don't understand it 100% but it makes sense :) I have been to Macedonia this summer on the way to Albania - only for 2 days (Tetovo and Ohrid) but I am sure that it wasn't the last time, it's a really nice country. Zdravo Raso mk, Hvala vam za sliku crkve Presvete Bogorodice u Miletinu. Tu sam krstena pre 24 godine, ali dugo nisam dolazila pa sam zaboravila ime popa koji je tu dugo ziveo sa suprugom. Pokusavam da ponovo stupim u kontakt sa njegovom unukom Vesnom sa kojom sam se igrala kao dete. Znam da sam malo skrenula sa teme, ali bila bih vam puno zahvalna ako nesto mozete da mi kazete o njima. Hvala! Pozdrav iz Srbije!

Trayko Kitanchev[edit]

How could Trayko Kitanchev be "Man of Republic of Macedonia" when this country was established more than a century after his death? May be Saint Stylianos is a "Man of the Republic of Turkey" with the same logic? Please revert the anachronism. --StanProg (talk) 21:01, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Blind Reverts[edit]

Hi, I wanted to drop a note and explain myself before seeking assistance from admins. There are currently two issues at hand. On is of naming categories (in English) in way which is different from names on the English language wikipedia. Now, since the names on en.wiki are the most widely accepted once than the chances of somebody looking for them is much much bigger. So it only fits that the names are the same. It is not like the two projects are not interconnected.
The second issue is with the cat 'Men from Republic of Macedonia'. Now, while I see where you are going with this, I fail to see the purpose of lame retaliation (as you seem to view it). All the men I have removed the cat from already have other tags which cover the region in general and are hardly contestable since they are not connected to any country. So, could you care to explain to me, why another cat is needed, since 1. It is already covered by other cats. 2. Those persons never lived/worked/associated with the present-day country?
And just to clarify - all of those have actually lived/worked/ or have been born in Bulgaria. So removing the other cat, which does not also correspond with the region, is childish, to say the least. Please more critically check flickr users. For this flickr guy it is so obvious that he not makes photos but only take them from elsewhere and upload to flickr in violation of flickr terms of service. Also File:Sv.Petka vo Tetovo.jpg from http://www.panoramio.com/photo/7442078, many photos stolen from http://www.tetova.gov.mk/en/f/7.html. Св. Марина и Јован Владимир[edit]

Здраво Рашо и хвала на доброј вољи. Видим да си пренео део иконе са сајта МПЦ. На тај начин јесте избегнуто појављивање оног жига, али на жалост, такав делимичан приказ иконе није погодан да буде укључен у чланак о Јовану Владимиру. Планирао сам да на крају поглавља о житију и иконографији, значи испод тог текста, поредам једну до друге три иконе: из Манастира Арденица, икону са св. Марином, и икону из Синајског манастира која би ускоро требала бити скенирана из једне књиге (кад та књига буде доступна једном кориснику). Пошто ће прва и трећа икона бити целовите, није погодно да икона са св. Марином буде подсечена. Тако, једино могу да поновим своју молбу да ако будеш у прилици сликаш целу ту икону, управо онако како је приказана на сајту МПЦ. Ако ниси у прилици, шта се може...
