First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, StanProg!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Kitancev[edit]

Yes, you can add the Ottoman Empire, not remove Macedonia since the city where he is born is in present day Macedonia. Like it or not, that is how it works. I thought you are familiar with the basics of Wikipedia and Commons considering your experience. The Macedonian category is added for technical reasons (not national as you think). Best, --MacedonianBoy (talk) 14:16, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cats[edit]

Stop deleting the Macedonian categories, those books are part of the Macedonian literature as well and you know it very well. I am not gonna play with you here. --MacedonianBoy (talk) 19:35, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, Karchovski wrote Bulgarian literature, in Bulgarian language, for Bulgarians. The fact that centuries after his death the territory where he is born is known as Republic of Macedonia is not enough to classify his works as "Macedonian literature". According to Wikipedia: "Macedonian literature is a term that refers to the literary written works in Macedonian." There's no known work of Karchovski written in Macedonian. --StanProg (talk) 21:26, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Gday. I have put on hold the requests for Macedonia category moves as I did not see any discussion related to them, and now arriving here, I see that they are contested in themselves. My general comment is that categories are a consensus issue, and Macedonian issues have been contentious. Where categories are clearly related to the political state that makes it easier, however with things related to people (culture, dress, etc.) then it is not the case.
Controversial fixes: where a category name has been in use for a long time or a lot of items, or where the naming policy is unspecific. Any category that has a corresponding Wikipedia article which has had a naming controversy over that article definitely falls into this lot. Tag these with a Move notice. Start a discussion on a talk page, and link to it from any other relevant categories, consider posting a note on the Village pump and or Commons:Categories for discussion too. Let consensus develop before going on with a bot rename.

Not done at this time. I have concerns about these moves, the matters around Macedonia can be hot topics, and there should be an associated discussion with community consensus to which this should be linked. I am especially not comfortable with the "National costumes of Macedonia" as to me such matters are related to the people, not the borders of the state. Please take all of these to a discussion and get clarity on each, this is not a matter of straight standardisation.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:30, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

</PASTE>

Hi, sDrewth. The initial discussion on my page was not related to the categories move, but to a specific category which I removed from a file, which was in wrong category. I'm dealing with the standardization of the Republic of Macedonia related categories since few months and so far no one disputed the move. The category "National costumes of Macedonia" that you mention, has parent categories: "National costumes by country", "Clothing of the Republic of Macedonia", "Culture of the Republic of Macedonia", so everything here is in the context in "Republic of Macedonia", not the wider geographical region. You can also see that in that categories there are national costumes of the minority nations (Republic of Macedonia is multinational, country, not unitary), like Albanian, an of other non-Macedonian ethoses, like the Mijaks. If we consider it as costumes of the region of Macedonia, we'll need to add Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian and more Albanian costumes from the region. I think the parent category "National costumes by country" clearly explains that this is only for the country. "Mayors of Macedonia" may be for Republic of Macedonia, may be for the administrative units of East Macedonia, Central Macedonia & West Macedonia, and that's why we need to clarify that it's for the country, not for the Greek places. An one more case "Composers from Macedonia": it have parent categories "Musicians from the Republic of Macedonia", "Music of the Republic of Macedonia" & "Composers by country" - it's obvious for me to synchronize the category name based on the parent categories and the fact that it's for the country, not for the region. In Wikipedia we're using 2 different terms "Republic of Macedonia" and "Macedonia (Greece)" and that's how we solve the controversies there. If you still think that the renaming is controversial, consider adding your concerns at the village pump or the categories for discussion. I don't have any questions and everything is pretty clear for me, regarding the terms and their context use. I'll pause the sync. of these kind of categories until someone come up with a final solution. --StanProg (talk) 11:40, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned, what I am wanting to see here is a link to a discussion where there is community support for the plan, if one exists then please link to it when you move the pages back to the CDL talk page. If that discussion doesn't exist then please have it as per the above link, and when there is a consensus then please link to that when you move them back. I understand there may be different parent categories, however, that doesn't mean that the parents are correct or that previous moves have asked the question of please show consensus. We need consensus as that is the requirement for administrators.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:35, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File transfers[edit]

Hi, please only transfer files to Commons if you are willing to do proper after care. You are flooding our maintenance categories. Jcb (talk) 00:28, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jcb: I thought to do that after I complete the migration (we have less than 1000 images in the Bulgarian wikipeida that are not yet migrated to commons), but it's not a problem first to first to categorize the uploaded ones, and then to continue with the rest with categorization after I process several of them. --StanProg (talk) 00:42, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please make sure you also fill in proper author and source information. These mass transfers without after care are a major disruption to our maintenance. Jcb (talk) 00:46, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
