Card Models

Per IRC Disscussion- Where to start ? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:06, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
we could start with a sub-page somewhere in user-space, such as User:ShakespeareFan00/Card_Models. Since had had the seminal idea, I suggest you do the honours? Cheers! Rama (talk) 07:27, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
User:ShakespeareFan00/Card_Models - Created a very basic page... I'd appreciate your input on what the primary focus should be. Drawing polyhedral nets is probably straightforawrd (and commons might already have a number of these!) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:50, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An Image of Yours was Used on a Major News Site Without Credit or SA-Licensing

Hello Rama:

Just wanted to give you a heads up that your photo, Canon Telelenses MG 0492

Canon Telelenses MG 0492

was used in this CP24 story (a Canadian TV news channel and web site claiming to reach "1.55 million viewers daily in Toronto") without either crediting you (instead, crediting "Wikimedia" which is, of course, absurd that any writer for a TV station would be so ignorant of basic copyright law) or complying with the copyleft provisions of the CC-BY-SA or CeCILL. Not sure if you want to sue the crap out of them, demand compensation, or just politely inform them of your error, but there you go. Best of luck!

Hello,
sorry, but this quite old and I do not remember from where this came. The files seem to exceed the resolution of the camera I had at the time, so it might either have been taken from another website, or scanned from a book. I'll let you know if I stumble upon the definitive answer, but for now I fear I an unable to tell you more than this, sorry.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 21:23, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If sources can't be found, I apologize, but the images may have to be nominated for deletion. Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:08, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No they do not. They are obviously in the public domain no matter what. Rama (talk) 18:39, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Salut, Que suggères-tu concernant Ludo ? cf. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Les Nutons du Condroz.jpg, Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Sysop abuse by Ludo29. This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum@wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

Your content in Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision museum exhibition

Good afternoon,

My name is Lotte Baltussen, and I work at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. We are the archive of Dutch public broadcasters and hold many other types of audiovisual heritage as well. We have recently opened our new exhibition "3FM Presents: Your Serious Radio", which looks back at the last 50 years of pop music on the radio.

One of the interactives of our exhibition is a videomapping installation that depicts a teen room. When visitors enter the exhibition, they provide information that builds up their profile: their year of birth, gender and the favourite radio show, song, musical genre from their teens. This information is used to recreate their teen room; a sparse white space with 25 different elements such as a white bed, desk, and couch that are projected upon when a visitor activates his or her profile. We've divided the teen room into 10 time periods: 1965-1969, 1970-1974 and so forth.

In creating the videomapping, we have used countless free to use images, textures and patterns, among which is your picture of Amy Winehouse. We'd like to thank you very much for making your content available and thus making it possible us to use it. You can find a complete overview of the content used here, a blog post about the whole process here and pictures of the videomapping here, so you can see your content in action.

Thanks again!

All best,

Rama (talk) 19:29, 2 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour Rama. Cordialement.

Rama (talk) 09:52, 4 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Background for "Copyvio: proprietary kerning algo. leaked in file."?

Hello.

If you recall deleting a raft of "traffic signs manual" related images on or about 9th February 2016 with the above tag would you please be so kind as to reveal your reasoning &/or provide a pointer to the relevant discussion. In particular, I was the uploader of (now obviously deleted) File:UK-Traffic-signs-manual-chapter-03-Page-22-Image-01.png, File:UK-Traffic-signs-manual-chapter-03-Page-22-Image-02.png and File:UK-Traffic-signs-manual-chapter-03-Page-22-Image-03.png

I am not at all questioning your judgement or necessarily want the images resurrected. My only involvement was in extracting these images for layout demonstration purposes on English wikisource and was unaware of this form of encumbrance. As the images were drawn from a PDF already present on Commons: File:UK Traffic Signs Manual - Chapter 3 Regulatory Signs. 2008 (Second Impression 2008).pdf (in point of detail all three were drawn from page 24 of that document) I rather fail to comprehend why the PDF is not also subject to removal upon identical reasoning.

Thanks for your time. AuFCL (talk) 00:15, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would also like to see where you have communicated with the English Wikisource community about the deletions of files in use. As an administrator, you have a broad responsibility to the community at large, not a narrow focus on single issue. There was neither urgency nor privacy issues to required deletion of the files without consultation. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:35, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AuFCL the kerning (i.e. variable distance between letters) on these panels is based on a non-Free Frutiger font; hence, they contain proprietary intellectual property and cannot, as such, be published under a Free licence. This is of course highly technical and hard to spot (I did not myself, my attention was drawn on the issue), so there is nothing improper in what you did. I think that if these signs were recreated with the fonts implemented as paths, it would not be a problem. Rama (talk) 07:22, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for a gracious response. As you indeed suspected I had no idea of such considerations. Thanks also for suggesting an alternate approach. AuFCL (talk) 08:46, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am further embarrassed to find that—now that I know the terms to search for—the user for whom I prepared the original demonstration was aware of this matter as of 1st February. Thanks again for your actions. AuFCL (talk) 09:36, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@billinghurst the mission of Commons is to constitute a repository of Free content: it is not ancillary to other projects, and there is an emphasis on Free for a good reason. If anything, my "broad responsibility to the community at large" is to ensure that their work is not jeopardised by a creep of non-Free content. Rama (talk) 07:22, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And nothing that I said is contra to the free content component, my message was in the paragraph in its entirety. The scope of Commons is cited at Commons:Project scope and you will see it is a two part statement, not solely the one part that you cited to me. The message is not whether the files should have been deleted, it is the process and discussions to undertake. It is the consideration that administrators here should have on a crosswiki project where the images are stored here wherever possible. Education and the sharing your knowledge is an integral part of the role, not predominantly policeman.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:02, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
user:billinghurst, don't know why you would expect anything but summary deletion. being an admin means never having to say you're sorry; and free to make picayune license purity tests. deletion before collaboration; and what other projects? but hey it's all good we can farm flickr. Howdy from Texas Rama, I enjoy genealogy work. I am in the " Military & War" Project, at wikitree.com / http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dortch-50 I would like other users of wikitree.com to be able to use this image also. I think that I have completed all the necessary steps for Creative Commons. URL. url site. Attribution: "Photograph by Rama, Wikimedia Commons, Cc-by-sa-2.0-fr" . & then I tried to use the "[ [ ] ]" for the wikisite. It did not appear when I used the double brackets. It is no problem :). If I have missed doing something please advise me sir ? I have also attempted to up load the same image at fold3.com , I will double check that I have fulfilled the requirements of Creative Commons for this site also. Thank You Kindly, John P Vickery IV http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Vickery-352 I can also be reached at yaquidebrujo@yahoo.com Have a Great Day :)

Thank you for your interest in my image and in Free licences.
Normally, the image should appear on a MediaWiki-based wiki if you use Image:Dortch-50-1.jpg, but depending on your settings this might change. Keep in mind that other wiki systems might use different syntaxes. At worse, you should be able to use a full HTML command ("<img src="http://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/e/ee/Dortch-50-1.jpg">").

Removal of uploader credit

Hello, you are being contacted as a user who has previously [or currently] included "* Uploaded by Example" in your file uploads. A bot task has been approved to remove this specific phrase from files because it can be misleading when attempting to attribute the file creator. As an alternative, RileyBot is willing to tag your uploads with a user category instead. Please respond stating if you opt-in and if you have any specific requests (addition of user category, etc); if there is no response within two weeks, consent will be implied. Please note, this message has been left by an automated bot, however, a user will be tracking your response. RileyBot (talk) 01:12, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bonne continuation ! Rama (talk) 10:20, 23 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Bonjour Rama et Lepsyleon, je me suis permis de restaurer l'image car elle me semble bien in scope, en plus d'être utilisée sur une page utilisateur. What information/authorisations do I need ?

Hello Rama,

One of the paricipants of the Geneva Gender-Gap workshop wants to upload a picture to Commons to illustrate the article she has written about a living person. This person like to send a photo to illustrate the article. Her husband took the photo quite a few years ago, but they cannot scan/upload the photo themselves. Exactly what type of signed documents do we need in order to use this photo on Commons?

Best regards GastelEtzwane (talk) 10:20, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thank you for the inquiry.
In this case, the husband is the copyright holder, so he is the person to ask. The person should write a letter or e-mail stating that they are willing to publish the document in question under a specific Free licence (I suggest Cc-by-sa for this purpose). For instance, a statement saying "as the copyright holder of this work, I hereby release it under the Cc-by-sa licence" would do nicely. You should then forward this to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org where a volunteer will archive the permission and approve the file.
If the person if sending a copy of a photograph, you can scan it and upload the scan, this will not affect the validity of the process (in fact scanning 2D works in ineligible for copyright in Switzerland).
You can find further information on Commons:OTRS (or Commons:OTRS/fr for a French version), but do not hesitate to ask me if I am in positions to help. Thank you for your contributions and good conitnuation! Rama (talk) 10:28, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your rapid answer. We are in the workshop right now, presenting the article (fr:Micheline Centlivres-Demont), and both individuals (the contributor and the living peron) are here with me. GastelEtzwane (talk) 10:36, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

mes demandes de suppression

Bonjour

More Atari joystick images?

Your Atari CX40 joystick appears to be in very good condition, and I'm wondering if you might consider adding more images of it from different angles? Evan.Amos has uploaded an excellent one, but his stick has all the orange paint rubbed off, and I'd like to show that. Would you consider making an image like this one: File:Atari-2600-Joystick.jpg? Thanks! Maury Markowitz (talk) 15:57, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also, this stick lacks the word "TOP" in orange. This may indicate it is actually a CX10, not a CX40. If so, that is very interesting and I would like to know for sure one way or the other. Does it say anything on the bottom? Maury Markowitz (talk) 16:15, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings,
thank you for your interest and congratulation on your expertise!
I am not in possession of this joystick, but I think it is part of the collections of the Musée Bolo. If so, it might be on display, in which case I might be able to take other views. I will try contacting the conservator and see whether it would be concievale to open the diplay case and take images from all angles.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 16:25, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I thought you might want to know about recent changes in these files. An IP claims that this is Duquesne from 1813. --jdx Re: 14:34, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have noticed the change, thank you very much! I believe this correction to be correct, you can see that the lower battery has 15 guns on each side, typical of 80-gun ships of the line, while 74-guns have 14. There are probably lots of other details that will confirm it, some of which I am not even aware. Thank you and good continuation! Rama (talk) 14:45, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Swordbreaker

Hello, Rama. I've recently been editing Parrying Daggers using information from a few scholarly sources and had a question about your Swordbreaker image. According to how the terminology is conventionally applied, it would seem to fit the description of a Main-gauche rather more than a Swordbreaker, so I was wondering if would be possible to relabel the image accordingly. 216.67.56.99 04:59, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
Thank you for your message, your expertise is very much appreciated. Could you give me the URL of the image in question so I can implement your correction?
Also, we would be very glad to have someone of your expertise on board, so I was hoping that you might consider making yourself a user account if you wanted to contribute, even sporadically. You can even edit article or image labels without an account, just like you did this talk page.
Thank you again and do let me know if I can help in any way. Best wishes, Rama (talk) 05:11, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Is this the image you are thinking of? File:Swordbreaker img 3665.jpg Cheers! Rama (talk) 05:16, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the one. I was hesitant to edit it myself since you're the one who uploaded it and I didn't want to seem rude. I also realize that when it comes to medieval weaponry, terminology can never be entirely uniform. I think my main concern was simply to make the image consistent with the article itself. 216.67.56.99 05:41, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, I will change the caption, and maybe detour the image as to make it more readable.
Also, reading the Wikipedia article, I see that we have in fact no image of an actual Swordbreaker; I'll try to draft a schematics of the thing, so not hesitate to comment on it should it need improvements.
Thank you again and best regards! Rama (talk) 06:07, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cdang (talk) 11:51, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Et Erminig me manque ! ;)
Bonne continuation et j'espère à bientôt ! Rama (talk) 12:45, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rama (talk) 07:38, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting non-empty categories with zero files

Concerning this, what do you suggest I should do about dozens of “my” categories that have been recently deleted as empty by JuTa? Apart from one (created by mistake), all of them were trivially populatable and most included templates and/or parent cat connections containing non trivial information, which might be lost upon recreation (as opposed to undeletion). -- Tuválkin 13:01, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour,

File:Chartres cathedral 2848.jpg
Chartres Stained glass?

Hello,

Can you remember where that photograph comes from? It is certainly not part of the Chartres stained windows anyway, only the crypt ones are modern, and they are in a very different style. That one seems to be part of a series of cathedrals/coat of arms (?)

Furthermore, the style seems modern (I'd say post-1930) so chances are, that it is not PD in the first place.

And, I can't see any potential usage for it as long as nobody knows where it has been taken (technically remarkable, though, but that is beside the point).

I'd suggest you delete the file if you agree with my analysis. Or update the description. Whatever.

(en fait on peut aussi dialoguer en français) Michelet-密是力 (talk) 13:31, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have no recollection of that, but the size of the image worries me. This looks more like something taken from some random Internet website than something I would have photographed myself. Deleting. Thank you for the notification. Rama (talk) 14:12, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Citations

Hey Rama! I am citing your pictures with MLA format. How should I include the license? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhoenixTamer (talk • contribs) 12:24, 09 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
if you are merely mentioning the images, the including the licence is not mandatory (though it's always appreciated as a way to help others re-use the image); it is if you are using the image. You can have a look at User:Rama/use my images for tips, but do not hesitate to ask me further if I can help. Cheers! Rama (talk) 13:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Citations (again)

But the MLA format does not include the license. How will I include it? I am using three of your drawings (recovery position, recovery maneuver, Heimlich maneuver) for a first aid poster project for school, and have to cite in MLA — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhoenixTamer (talk • contribs) 07:56, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
Any mention of the licence would do, but indeed we might need to improvise a tiny bit. I would suggest something along the lines of
Rama. Heimlich-manoeuver.jpg (Cc-by-sa-3.0-fr). 2004. Wikimedia Commons. Web 10 December 2016.
Does that appear practical? Best wishes and thank you for your attention to these questions, this is most appreciated. Cheers Rama (talk) 09:17, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Liage Wikidata et buste de Jean-Antoine Chaptal par Philippe-Laurent Roland

Hello Rama.

Thanks for uploading File:Louvres-antiquites-egyptiennes-img 2709.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too.
