First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:

 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:48, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map showing usage of nuclear energy[edit]

Hello, regarding your map file 'Nuclear power percentage.svg' [File:Nuclear_power_percentage.svg] or on e.g. the English Wikipedia: [File:Nuclear_power_percentage.svg]

At first, thank you for making the map! That is a nice rendering of data that is only available in a tabulated form elsewhere.

However, French Guiana in South America does not get any power from nuclear fuel. This page says so: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_French_Guiana and I don't find any contradicting information on the internet. It belongs administratively to France somhow, so the source cited as 'Updated using data from the IAEA website.' may relate it to France, but for all I know it is not France and thay have no nuclear power. Could you please a) correct the map and b) state the exact source ? IAEAs website is vast and wide and I cannot find the source data there. This issue is bugging me because the map's title/legend/description/name suggests that 'French Guineas electricty is partly derived from nuclear sources which it is not. They don't even seem to have a test reactor or any nuclear facilities at all. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.50.174.77 (talk) 12:01, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

United Arab Republic Map[edit]

hello, I would like to know how did you create the united arab republic map. i once tried to do the same and came out with surprisingly the same map - though i didn't publish it. Please tell me where did you get the information from. Sorry if this is not the place to discuss this. Regards

Hello there. I am flattered that you came to me for advice. But my question is, which map are you talking about? As I recall, I have done at least two maps. One of them I did as a location map in SVG [File:LocationUnitedArabRepublic.svg]. The other I did as part of an alternate history I have been working on where the UAR successfully unites all the Arab people [1]. —NuclearVacuum 17:52, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, actually the map i am talking about is here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Atlas_of_the_United_Republic.svg which as you called it, is the alternate history project. However I have thought of the thing more from a future perspective; a future movement that will unite all these nations (PS: being arab, it is more of a dream for me, and being a believer of a one world government this union, along with other unions that you have provided maps of, is an inevitable step). I have so many questions for you, about this map and other maps of your creation, and if you don't mind let's take this conversation to facebook.com/akram.ayyash , or check my website tr.im/akram for my email. Regards, I hope I can hear from you soon.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Drinking age by country.[edit]

Hello!

Your "Drinking age by country" map is not correct!

In Hungary you not allowed to drink alcoholic drinks under 18 years! I have no reference, but I am hungarian, and I know it.

If you need one anyway, I can find one.. with time.

Please correct the image!

Lakes on world map[edit]

Oops, completely my mistake (I quite like the lakes, honest!) - I thought I took the most recent version and merely fixed a problem with Sudan (its class tag wasn't "sd sd" but just "sd", meaning that S. Sudan only got coloured if "sd" was selected). As I might not have time, feel free to fix (and double-check Sudan's code!) Canuckguy (talk) 03:39, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there,

I would like to use your vectorized graphic depicting the territories promised to Mexico in the Zimmerman Telegram for a NFP multimedia project I'm creating. Would it be possible to just use your full name/business name/wikimedia user name (whichever you would prefer) as attribution instead of the full attribution link that Wikimedia automatically generates? I'm hoping to reduce clutter that this type of link would create on the page.

If this is acceptable, please email your approval of such usage, along with how you would like to be attributed, to mikeyantha at live dot com

Thank you very much in advance and I hope this is no problem! --Mike

United Kingdom diagram color scheme[edit]

I am planning to replace File:LocationBritishIsles-noborders.png with a vector image. I was going to use your File:EU-United_Kingdom.svg as a starting point, but then I wondered: why did you switch from the colors specified by Wikipedia:WikiProject_Maps/Conventions to a green/gray scheme? I don't necessarily have a preference, but I don't want to make it wrong and it seems like you got concensus somewhere to change the color. Can you direct me to that discussion so I can get some background?

Hello, NuclearVacuum!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please help with a map[edit]

Hello there, I am not sure if you could help or not, or if this is the place to ask, but I saw you had created the Caribbean map, and wanted to ask you first. I was working on the CFU Caribbean Cup article on Wiki, and was wondering if you could help me with a map. I thought it would be nice to have a gradient map of the Caribbean with the winning countries colored in, and the shade changing according to accumulated championships. (It would be the map to include Suriname and Guyana since they participate in the tournament like this one Map you created). The map should include the winners of the CFU Championship and the Caribbean Cup combined, since the one tournament is the successor of the other. The countries that would need to be colored in would be as follows: Trinidad & Tobago (10 titles), Jamaica (5 titles), Martinique (3 titles), Haiti (2 titles), Suriname (1 title) and Cuba (1 title) with a legend describing the shading, similar to how it is done in this example here. I hope you can help me out, or if not maybe tell who to ask or maybe you know someone. Thank you for your time and effort.

Astronauts by Nation[edit]

In September, a Danish and a Kazakh astronaut will fly to the ISS for a short mission Soyuz TMA-18M. Based on the information I've ascertained, the Kazakh will be the first citizen of an independent Kazakhstan to fly to space (a previous Kazakh astronaut who now heads the Kazakh Space Agency was a Russian citizen during his post-Soviet flights). These will both require updates to your map. Because the notes about the USSR successor states, Czechoslovakia, and Germany are impossible to see from the pages that your map is included on, might it be possible to provide a solution that also shows which states have produced astronauts based on modern borders?

Perhaps the main map could show modern borders and the astronauts from modern states or the states to which they are successors, and an inset map showing Cold War-era borders can be included to show the special circumstances for the USSR, Czechoslovakia, and the two Germanys. Just a thought, let me know what you think.Astrofreak92 (talk) 14:30, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Grey and dark grey[edit]

Hallo, I've just been looking at File:EU-Ireland.svg, the map of Ireland, as one example of your splendid countries-in-EU-and-Europe maps. I'd just like to comment that I find the difference between the two shades of grey almost impossible to see except where they are contiguous (and even then quite easy to miss where there's a white boundary separating them). North Africa appears at first sight to be dark grey (perhaps because surrounded by white sea). I've got 20-20 vision with my varifocal glasses, perfect colour vision as far as I know and a brand new laptop. To me, the boundary of the continent "Europe" is more important than that of the EU when looking for the location of a country, yet these maps show the EU very clearly and, to my eyesight, struggle to identify Europe. To my mind, a stronger contrast than between the current "light grey" and "dark grey" would improve the maps. (I started looking at country infobox maps after looking at State of Palestine and finding the map caption there confusing because without clicking and zooming I could see none of the pale green described in the caption). If you reply, could you please drop me a talkback note on my English Wikipedia talkpage, as I don't check my watchlist on Commons? Thanks, and thanks for your work in producing such great maps: I hope you will take this as constructive feedback! PamD (talk) 12:53, 23 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update request for the map File:Capital not largest city.svg[edit]

Hello.

Can you remove Syria from the map File:Capital not largest city.svg which you created in 2009, because Aleppo's population has collapsed with the Syrian civil war and declined to 250,000-300,000 down from 2,300,000 before the civil war. See sources and news reports.

Update[edit]

File:Two Chinas.svg requires updating[edit]

Hi NuclearVacuum,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Two Chinas.svg is out of date. São Tomé and Príncipe only recognizes the PRC. Could you update it? Thanks again. Pancho507 (talk) 07:56, 27 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maps for Asia and Europe[edit]

Hi,

Sorry about this but I was wondering if you could make maps for Asia and Europe showing which countries have legalized porn in those two regions. I tried to do it myself but couldn't figure it out and wanted to know if it was alright if you could do it. I already started a discussion for it on the talk page for Pornography by region along with a link to two blank map templates. Sorry for the inconvenience. File:Pornography law map.png[edit]

Hello NuclearVacuum, I notice that you created this map. It's a pretty good map, from what I can tell. There is one difficulty with it, which I have seen with other maps on Wikipedia: inconsistent color rendition. The color red is not rendering as what I would call red in certain circumstances. My monitor is old, but I consider it relatively normal in its color gamut. For the countries of Guiana and South Korea, it looks more like a deep blackish red, for instance. Also, the legend, as it appears when the map is clicked on within the article, shows red in the same blackish hue, yet, on the map itself, there are many countries shaded in a much brighter red. This causes a viewer like me to hunt around at various different renderings of the map in an effort to comprehend it. I feel that this map can and should be fixed. I can refer it to the Image Workshop for adjustment. I thought I'd run it by you first. Thanks. --Quisqualis (talk) 22:58, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

Can you make these corrections in File:Countries driving on the left or right 1900.svg?

In 1900, these places drove on the left and thus need to be colored in blue:

 • Austro-Hungarian Empire
 • Bosnia
 • Portuguese Timor (East Timor)
 • South Sudan (then part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan)
 • Aden Colony (South Yemen)

In 1900, these places drove on the right and thus need to be colored in red:

 • Canadian province of Alberta
 • Turkish Ottoman province of North Yemen
 • Brazil
 • Paraguay
 • South Korea (then part of a unified Korea)

Please see the articles en:Left- and right-hand traffic and en:List of countries with left-hand traffic and the sources.

Thank you.

Hello, I'm wondering why you colored the USA orange instead of red in this map, when according to the text, the USA has always been RHT? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-_and_right-hand_traffic#/media/File:Driving_standards_historic.svg Thanks, 2600:6C40:7400:198E:FCF1:F3CF:6D06:C52C 03:08, 12 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

In File:Russophone.svg can you color Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as well as Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the same color as Russia etc., because in that file there are only two categories with countries where Russian is an official language and countries where Russian is widely spoken but is not official.

Thank you.

31.200.11.49 15:57, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is no difference between an "official language" and a "state language", because they are different wordings for the same thing (e.g. like "streetcar" and "tramway" for the same type of transport). Russian is an official language at the national level in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and also in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Can you do the changes? I am SVG illiterate and cannot do these changes. 31.200.11.49 12:29, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In all the countries listed below (both internationally recognized and partially recognized), Russian is a co-official language with equal status:
That is why, all these countries need to be in the same color as Russia and Belarus. 31.200.11.49 07:56, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of the Australian Antarctic Territory Source[edit]

Hello NuclearVacuum, I would like to know what the source for your Flag of the Australian Antarctic Territory is. Was it taken from somewhere or is this your personal proposal? I've been doing some research on proposals of Antarctica and couldn't find a source for this one. Kind regards. Germenfer (talk) 23:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cant edit the File:Israel-Palestine Diplomacy.svg[edit]

Good Day Sir,

I have seen that you are the creator of this File.

I wanted to edit it, but it didnt work. There is a error, which I dont find any information on how to solve it.

Since you are the creator of the File, I wanted to ask you, if you have time to edit it?

I wanted to add Kosovo to the map in a dark blue color after Kosovo and Israel both established diplomatic relations in february of this year.

Best regards,

Romania was neutral in the Sino-Soviet split[edit]

I don't know why this wasn't brought up before, since there are reliable sources galore to confirm this. As such, in this work of yours, could you please color Romania black? Transylvania1916 (talk) 22:27, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Spain Map[edit]

Hey, was looking at your map of Spain in the wikipedia and I noticed you don't include the Spanish territory of Ceuta which is on the tip of Morocco. You could paint the eastern tip of that area of Morocco under Gibraltar to be dark green to represent it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Weplist (talk • contribs) 03:51, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
