Hi, I've noticed a mistake in your uploaded map of astronaut nationalitites, Czech Republic is missing even though https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimír_Remek was in fact first astro/cosmo- naut from outside US, USSR. I uploaded the fixed version

Nations (or their successor states) who have had citizens fly into space.

, but can't overwrite yours. Can you please update it? I don't want to update the articles to my version (that's not the way to do it, right?). Excuse me if this is bad manners, I've never done this before.

Hello! There was a discussion about this when we first created the map, and the policy is that it shows countries where astronauts held citizenship when they flew. The Czech Republic wasn't a sovereign state when Remek went to space, so it would be misleading to highlight it, even though he is a Czech citizen now. An alternative would be to create a map with an inset showing Cold War-era borders, which would allow the USSR, the two Germanies, and Czechoslovakia to be shown as sovereign states whose citizens have flown to space, and if you'd like to create such a map, that would be great!--Astrofreak92 (talk) 12:37, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am aswell new to wiki and created an account specifically to point this issue out! I believe that since its already mentioned in the map's description "and successor states" it shouldnt be a problem including Czech Republic as well. Also apologize for raising the question again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Patriciusmartius (talk • contribs) 19:03, 14 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia commons! Czech citizenship did not exist as a separate legal concept from Czechoslovak citizenship in 1978, when Remek flew. As such, Remek flew as a Czechoslovak and not a Czech citizen. Successor states is a legal term used by the UN, Russia is the successor state to the USSR, post-revolutionary governments in Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Afghanistan are the legal continuation of the states that preceded them in those places, etc. When Czechoslovakia was dissolved, neither state took on the legal identity of the old state, they each adopted a new legal identity. The legal nationality Remek held at the time is no longer reflected on a map of the world because no entity inheriting the legal identity of Czechoslovakia exists. Remek is the first ethnic Czech in space, and the first and only citizen of Czechoslovakia in space, but there has been no person who has ever held Czech citizenship during a spaceflight. As such, Czechoslovakia could be placed on an inset map showing pre-1992 borders as a country whose citizens have flown in space, but the Czech Republic cannot. Slovakia is only marked on the map because Ivan Bella, who held Slovak citizenship during his 1999 flight, went to space after the establishment of Slovak nationality. If Bella had not flown, neither Slovakia nor the Czech Republic would be highlighted. A Czech citizen flying in space would represent the entry of a new nationality onto the list of space travelers. --Astrofreak92 (talk) 02:46, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
