Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Hello[edit]

Hello !

First, can you say what is the projection of the World6 map ? Robinson ? Mercador ? Wekel ? ...

Afterwhat,

I have two good and two bad news :

  • the good one, is that "Arthur" made : http://gunn.co.nz/map/ ;
  • the bad one, Arthur is not a wikipedia, and didn't edited wikipedia the last 8 months.
  • the good one, is that I hope get this "Arthur" leading a team of SVG relate programmers ;
  • the bad one, we will died before than the Wikimedia foundation support us (by words of by bills)

Please can you say more about your coding abilities, I'm looking for volunteers to expand the SVG tools lists. Are you interested ? what are your coding abilities ? Will you have free time to write scripts ? etc. : all this informations are welcome on this table.

Regards, Yug 18:07, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello again,
Can you improve the code of Image:Départements+régions (France).svg, with each French departement on this map having the same situation that each contry in the world map ? Regions are not necessary.
It may also be welcome to write down a tutorial "how to write a Good SVG" explaning how you work.
This is need for possible future SVG development, how you can probably guest. ;) 220.135.4.212 15:51, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Using circles instead of paths for small country highlighting?[edit]

Hello, I'm using your SVG world map for making a game based on Free Poverty (www.freepoverty.com) which appears to be using a slightly modified version (they've expanded the sizes of various islands). I'm considering using your circles instead, but I'd rather have slightly smaller ones. Unfortunately, your country circles are all constructed as paths rather than as SVG circle objects. I'm new to SVG, but it seems that circles would be more convenient (and result in a smaller file size). I might wind up making a revised version with circles instead of paths for small countries, and I'm wondering whether there's a good reason to use paths there. If there is, could you post it here?

-Peter Mawhorter

I used the circle object in Inkscape but it came out with the circles you see in the code. I agree a circle object would probably be smaller, but I don't know enough about SVG to do this. If you want to update the file and replace the paths with circles, feel free. I would like the circles to remain the size they are in the Commons file, but in your application you can change them to whatever size you want ... --Canuckguy (talk) 13:02, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, if I get around to updating it to use circle objects, I'll post the modified version. If possible, I'll use a variable for the size and set it to the current size by default. Thanks for making such an awesome map, by the way.
-Peter Mawhorter
Keep in mind too that there are two different circle sizes, one for small countries, and a slightly smaller sizes for French DOMs (Reunion, Guadeloupe, Martinique) and Chinese SARs (Hong Kong, Macau), they both would need to change, and ideally both would need to be kept their relative sizes (for one thing, it makes the Caribbean circles a lot easier to fit in together without overlap - which is my main concern about a size variable, circle overlap).
You're quite welcome for the compliments on the map, but, like all good Wikimedia projects, this was a collaborative effort. People like User:Lokal Profil and User:Andrew pmk have made some much beneficial improvements in my original file, and my original file was based on User:Brianski's previous file, I just had the idea to group all non-contiguous parts together (I was as blown away by his original map as you and others are of this one!)--Canuckguy (talk) 14:51, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
@Peter Mawhorter - I think the current version of the map is actually using circles rather then paths (at least for some it should be). Are you sure that you are working on the latest version of the file? /Lokal_Profil 20:40, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SVG world map[edit]

File:BlankMap-World6.svg is great. Do you know if there is any work under way to greate a world-subdivision svg? That would be hugely useful. Keep up the good work! Jørgen2 (talk) 20:16, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:BlankMap-World6.svg[edit]

Thank you very much for the compliment. You just made my day. Thank you again. —NuclearVacuum 05:08, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lakes[edit]

Why did you remove the lakes I added on BlankMap-World6? --NuclearVacuum (talk) 20:20, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Equirectangular Map Projection Conversion Script[edit]

Hey! I recently got in touch with Biercenator, because I need an equirectangular map with country borders and realised his nugsl-worldmap Python script does not produce that. So I sat down and partically reprogrammed it using spline interpolation of the data given on the Wikipedia article on the Robinson projection. I contacted Biercenator again and he agreed to include that as an extra feature and publish a new version of the script in the weeks to come. Then everybody (who gets past the obstacle of installing the script) will be able to create nice equirectangular maps. As you seem to be eager to solve this "not a standard map projection convention" problem, I thought I'd let you know. I'm not a registered Wikimedia user, just answer me here.

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

I am getting very annoyed that my edits in the Aral Sea, Australia, and the the Netherlands are getting reverted for a third time, again, and I get why now, because its in "human-editable plain text format"? I have no idea what that is, and how I would be able to do that. All I do know is that the edits I am making to Australia, Aral Sea, and the Netherlands are correct, and they keep getting reverted for some reason. If you can (because I do not know how to), could you make these changes? I fixed the coastline of the Netherlands, fixed the shape of the Aral Sea, and added a few islands in Australia. If you could please, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! —SPESH531Other 14:36, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Netherlands should not have a lake, it should be (I'm going to be blunt here, "water peninsula") an inlet of water, not a lake. And I added an island or two to Australia, I don't remember how many, definitely one off the coast of northern Australia. Thanks. —SPESH531Other 14:58, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

World Maps[edit]

Hello Canuckguy,

First and foremost, thank you so much for the excellent world maps you have contributed to Wikipedia. I am interested in creating my own. Will you please offer guidance on how to do that? What program do you use to do that? Please let me know.

Thank you,

Michipedian (talk) 23:30, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I do these files by downloading music from YouTube, converting it to .ogg, and cutting it with wavepad editor if I have to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DirectX3 (talk • contribs) 12:55, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
