First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Simple vestibulo-ocular reflex.PNG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

Ongoing conflicts

Your most recent Ongoing conflicts map has an error. It has the Ogaden (eastern Ethiopia) in red and S. Somalia in orange, where the situation should really be reversed. The conflict with the ONLF is very sporadic, and even during the most intense recent flare-ups, it hasn't been more major than the ongoing conflict in Somalia. I suggest you change the colors.

Yom 17:43, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, a terrible error. I'll fix it right away. Mikael Häggström 12:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
On second thought, I think it's discussable. The map is consistent with what the article itself says, and thus it is rather the article that might have an error. I personally may agree to what you say, but I still recommend you to present the issue at the w:ongoing conflicts talk page in order to get consensus from other contributors to the article as well. Mikael Häggström 12:13, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey, the conflict in the north caucasus, the second chechen war became missing on your new map. I added it if you don't mind. Cheers Pietervhuis 21:29, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot! Mikael Häggström 06:00, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Where did you find it? This is another version of my old and not very good photo :) If you load photos - write who their autor is. Przykuta 12:24, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, if I remember right I found it while reading perhaps the w:All Saints article. I optimized it, but wanted to ask (I guess you) the original creator before replacing the old one, so I gave it a new name until then. Then I must have found interest somewhere else on Wikipedia, since I forgot to ask you, and wrote the wrong image as a source. I'm sorry for that. Anyway, do you think it would be okay to replace Image:Wszystkich swietych cmentarz.jpg with this one? You may still be the official author or it. Mikael Häggström 08:08, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Ongoing conflicts

Thanks for your work on this map. I've cataloged updates that need to be made to it at w:Talk:List of ongoing conflicts. Any help you could give would be appreciated, since you seem to have the necessary expertise. Thanks! -- Beland (talk) 17:01, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

I'll see if I can help. Mikael Häggström (talk) 10:22, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello Mikael Häggström/Archive 1!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 23:01, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification! The thought of looking into it has begun to speculate about a possibility of crossing my mind. Mikael Häggström (talk) 10:20, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Hi Mikael, I undid your changes to the image mentioned above. The reason is that the image is used in several projects and is intentionally drawn without numbering. If you would like a numbered version of the image please upload it with a different name. Regards, --NEUROtiker  20:50, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Sure, I'lll upload it under a new name. Mikael Häggström (talk) 18:56, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

The Photographer

Thank you for your detective work! As far as I remember, the man was indeed walking away. But I wouldn't trust very much the analysis of the tones of gray because most of them (the horizontal stripes) are scanning artifacts. The strongest evidence is, for me, the size of the shadow made by the left foot. It is easy to see that it would be much smaller if the man were approaching. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 13:05, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Indeed! Or perhaps (but unlikely) he actually was approaching and was taking a step forward with that left leg. This could be a good plot in the next Dan Brown book! Mikael Häggström (talk) 14:07, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Wikipetan image

Would you be able to make an SVG version of the Angry Wikipetan image without a caption? I have uploaded one onto Commons recently but it is PNG. I am too new with Inkscape to be able to figure out how to modify your WikiLove picture to remove the text and resize properly. I could do it on Adobe Illustrator but I dont have access to that here. Thanks. Soap (talk) 02:34, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Actually, that Wikipe-tan in the svg-image is still in png-format. It is just embedded in the file, still raster. However, I gave your version transparent background. It will make it easier to use in Inkscape as well. Mikael Häggström (talk) 05:32, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mikael Häggström,
are these people really beggars? To me they don't look like; but I've never been over there. --Túrelio (talk) 19:24, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

They acted like beggars to me, asking for money, but perhaps it is indeed not what they mainly do for life. I agree they don't look very beggar-like compared to in many western cultures, but perhaps it is a reflection of a sense of dignity in all Tibetans, no matter if they are rich or poor. But I'm not an expert on Tibetan culture myself, so perhaps advice should be sought from somebody around here who knows more about it. Mikael Häggström (talk) 16:26, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

General Question

Hello, SO if your Monocyte is 12H that means? A sign of flu? An elevated INR would mean? Also would the Prothtombn Time have anything to do with this. 12.3H? What would these counts mean?

Frankly, I don't know what the H in 12H of monocytes stands for. Probably, either a factor for the number, or hours after something, but I can't say what the 12 means if I don't know the units. INR is a standardized way to express the prothrombin time. en:Prothrombin time#Interpretation gives some information, but if you want any specific interpretation of any test result, then I suggest you contact a health care provider of yours. Sodium inconsistent in blood values image?

Looking at the excellent graph of concentrations, I noticed that Na was not consistent between weight and molar scales. I think the molar is the correct one -- but not sure

I had a look at it and found no obvious error. It's consistent with what's given in the tables below. Sodium (Na) belongs, however, to the substances with the least molar mass in the blood, and is expected to be found much more to the left in the mass scale. Mikael Häggström (talk) 11:27, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
I had a look again, and, indeed, they were incorrect. It's fixed now. Thank you! Mikael Häggström (talk) 10:15, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Fukushima I by Digital Globe 2 cropped.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. About File:Naked_human_male_body_front_anterior.png (guess it's not the first !)

I added this comment in the "discussion" section : « Isn't it absurd to have a picture of a man with a completely shaved pubic region (and completely shaved body altogether) on an encyclopedic page, and even more absurd to have below the same picture with « digitally added pubic hair » ? The same can be said about the “woman” illustration. »

I'd be interested in knowing your point of view.

Scintillating scotoma

Thank you for your excellent illustration. I had the rather shocking experience during lecture yesterday of such a phenomena. As mentioned on the Wikipedia page, mine had strong Widmanstatten patterns of quite disconcerting, but actually beautiful constantly changing light. Have you learned more about this phenomena that you experienced?

Attempt to visualize mine.
When I think about it, I had Widmanstätten patterns in my scotoma as well. I've tried to visualize them in image at right. Thanks for informing me of this pattern - I've been thinking many times of how to describe the scintillations I saw in more detail, but couldn't figure out any way, but when I saw your entry and opened the Widmanstätten pattern article, the similarity was really striking, and indeed, it was actually quite beautiful. It's been five months since that experience, and it hasn't recurred yet, but if it does I'll be paying much attention to any additional details. Mikael Häggström (talk) 06:01, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

University professor concerned about plagiarism

Dear Dr. Haggstrom,

I am a professor at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. I am concerned about the figure and description of "Probability Density Function" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log-normal_distribution

The caption for above wikimedia figure is: "Some log-normal density functions with identical location parameter μ but differing scale parameters."

This MBA student's paper does not include any attribution for the following description of this figure:

“Figure 6, presented below, illustrates several log-normal distribution shapes as an example of how distributions can vary widely depending on the nature of the process. Looking at the highly skewed example, it is easy to see how an assumption of normality could greatly under-predict defect rates in the direction counter to the skew.”

Do you know of a published source for the above description? Any help and advice will be deeply appreciated.

Thank you.

Kindest regards,

Bill

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Vue antérieure de humain de sexe féminin et masculin.jpg

Hello

Could you please correct some mistakes on your file File:Vue antérieure de humain de sexe féminin et masculin.jpg?

  1. «Organes génitaux chez les femelles» : change «femelles» by «femmes» (mâle/femelle (male/female) are not used for humans, use homme/femme (man/woman) only)
  2. «Bras» (arm) indicates the part of the upper limb from the shoulder to elbow. From elbow to wrist, the correct word is «avant-bras» (forearm)
  3. Same thing for the lower limb: «cuisse» from the hip to knee ; «jambe» from knee to ankle.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact on my Wikipédia. Ratachwa (talk) 00:11, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mikael, in the DR discussion you hinted that you would try to talk the hospital/radiology dep. where the discussed images were created. Any information from that so far? --Túrelio (talk) 16:56, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
I've sent an email to the radiology department requesting permission for its current usage, so I'm currently awaiting a reply from them. I was a bit reluctant to do so first because I was worried that doing so would imply that all uploaders of X-rays would have to do the same, but finding that there is a general discussion on the issue at Commons:Requests for comment/Xrays I don't worry very much about that any more. Mikael Häggström (talk) 17:37, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
I've now keep-closed the DR. Thanks for your efforts and sorry that you got involuntarily caught in a unnecessarily inflammatory basic discussion. --Túrelio (talk) 07:50, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks very much for having acquired the permission. In my view, this is the best possible solution. --Eleassar (t/p) 08:02, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
No problem :-) And as for the discussion, I admit the vast majority of it is still too-long-didn't-read for me. Still, I hope there will be a solution for all other X-rays out there as well. Mikael Häggström (talk) 12:13, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Permission to use your figure needed

Dr. Häggström,

I handle the production of the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Intergrative and Comparative Physiology journal. I have a research paper that is citing and using the figure (or part of it) you have posted in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Steroidogenesis.svg). Alhtough Wikipedia states on their website that one is free to copy, distribute, and transmit the work and adapt the work published on the website, we must have the copyright holder of the diagram give written permission to use that figure in our journals. It appears that you may be the sole copyright holder. If this is incorrect, can you direct me to the copyright holder of this figure? If you are the copyright holder, please send me a letter giving us permission to use your figure in the research paper. If there is another person who shares the copyright with you, I will need that person's permission as well. You may send the permission to me through my email (kmoore@the-aps.org).

Thank you.

Hi Mikkel,

My reply was different. See Wikipedia:User_talk:Slashme#Permission_to_republish_a_figure. They may publish the figure, because we have given them that right, but I refuse to make things even easier for a closed-access journal. The modern world doesn't need these parasites. I know that's a strong word, but I'm completely willing to support that characterisation of academic publishers. --Slashme (talk) 07:40, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

That's some food for thought for the next time I get a request for permission. I hope the entire scientific community will turn to open-access sites, but the progress is too slow. Mikael Häggström (talk) 10:08, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Human body diagrams

Dear Sir,

Regarding Human body diagrams. I am having some difficulty producing the same quality images as e.g. File:Bacterial infections and involved species.png

I am trying to make something similar but with following content:

  • brain
  • nasal and oral cavities
  • paranasal air sinuses
  • salivary glands
  • pharynx
  • trachea, bronchi & lungs
  • esophagus, stomach
  • liver, pancreas
  • large and small intestines
  • kidneys

I am thinking that it might be easier for me to start with bacterial infections and work from there... do you know how I can get a copy without any text or labels? Many thanks for any help you can provide me in this matter,

Zoe

Hello Zoe,
I'm delighted to hear that you find the diagrams useful for your project :-) Indeed, perhaps the easiest way is to use the File:Bacterial infections and involved species.svg in for example Inkscape and work from there. I don't have any version of that particular one without text or labels, but you can easily delete the text therein in Inkscape if you need to. Also, I should put paranasal sinuses among the Human body diagrams/Organs within a cuple of days so that you can use them on the other images at Human body diagrams#How to derive an image if you so choose. There isn't an image of the salivary glands, but being so small I don't think it matters very much since you would hardly see them anyway.

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Image: Thyroid hormone synthesis.svg

Hello Mikael,

once again thanks for your wonderful work. Upon further investigating the issue of the efflux and uptake of thyreoid hormones, I have come to think, that the current sience suggests a major role of the human monocarboxylate transporter 8 & 10 for the efflux of the thyroid hormones form the thyroid cells. My two major sources for this statement are these articles[1][2]

If you agree, it'd be great if you could alter your picture, which doesn't currently show the existence of these channels and instead (at least for me) suggests a diffusion-type of transport through the membrane.

If you'd like I would also be very happy to help translating the altered image into German. Again - thank you very much for your work and efforts. Best regards -- M-J-G (talk) 10:40, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Map for the 2016 yellow fever outbreak in Angola

Hello Michael,

We were in contact before about the Year of the Elephant paper on Wikiversity Medical Journal (John Cathey). I noticed you had something to do with the map on the ebola outbreak (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2014_ebola_virus_epidemic_in_West_Africa.svg). I've been doing the 2016 yellow fever epidemic in Angola page. I'm thinking it might be nice now to have a map somewhat like that one. The cases and deaths are mostly in Angola but are also in parts of DR Congo, espeically the capital Kinshasa. The concern is the outbreak originally centered on Luanda will continue spreading across to parts of DR Congo to Kinshasa and become more indigenous in DR Congo. There are increasing indigenous cases. So maybe a map that centers on the area around and between Luanda to Kinshasa. Then show the data: suspected cases, confirmed cases, total deaths, deaths from confirmed cases - for Angola. For DR Congo, they're reporting: suspected cases, with confirmed cases (imported from Angola) and deaths. The map would go at the top of the page, probably above the epidemic curve. Are you interested, or advise me on how to do it please? thanks Jtamad (talk) 04:42, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Hello John,
It's nice to hear from you, and thank you for your contributions to the yellow fever epidemic article! I can make a map similar to that of the ebola virus epidemic, but it was difficult to get an overview of the statistics. If you could find me the numbers and the sources for each relevant country, I can then make a map from it.
Best regards,
Mikael Häggström (talk) 14:51, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi Mikael. I replied by email. Maybe you've been busy and haven't had a chance to respond. Here's information:

Hi, great, glad you can help. This is the latest WHO situation report: http://www.afro.who.int/en/yellow-fever/sitreps/item/8747-situation-report-yellow-fever-outbreak-in-angola-20-june-2016.html Attached is the PDF, which downloads from that page.

It's mostly just Angola, but there have also been cases introduced from Angola to DR Congo and transmission is also occurring in the DR Congo, in 3 provinces and around Kinshasa. As you can read on the WP page, the concern is that another big outbreak could occur along border areas and/or in Kinshasa which has a million plus population. They are starting a vaccination campaign there in July. So I thought it was time for a map to make the data more prominent -- showing cases in Angola and DR Congo. These two sentences on the page are the main ones I've been updating from the situation reports every other week or so:

2nd paragraph, last sentence (Angola): As of 23 June, suspected cases were 3294 and laboratory-confirmed cases totaled 861; total deaths were 347, with 115 from confirmed cases.[17] Local, or autochthonous, transmission had been reported in 11 provinces as of 16 June. Confirmed cases have been reported in 16 of 18 provinces.

5th paragraph, last sentence (DR Congo): As of 20 June, WHO was notified of 1106 suspected cases, with 68 confirmed cases (59 imported from Angola) and 75 deaths.[35]

I thought it was getting time to make the data more prominent rather than buried at the end of these paragraphs. A table might be ok also, or both, but probably most people aren't familiar with the geography.

The reported data are a bit different right now, for the two countries. For Angola, WHO reports 1) suspected cases, 2) lab confirmed, 3) total deaths, 4) deaths from confirmed cases. For DR Congo, it's 1) suspected cases, 2) confirmed cases, 3) number imported from Angola/indigenous locally transmitted or autochthonous cases, 4) total deaths. Those two sets of data might be shown on the map. It's mostly throughout Angola, but the concern is from Luanda to the border areas of Angola with DR Congo to Kinshasa - A map might be limited to about the area shown on the attached screenshot from google earth, showing numbers in Angola and in DR Congo. That's the area of concern I think, between Luanda and Kinshasa, the main transportation link. and the epidemic curve for Angola should remain, could be part of it, use discretion. If you have other ideas, let me know. I will keep it up to date, with data from the WHO sitreps.

This ProMed report summarizes the latest information: http://www.promedmail.org/post/4308329. I've known one of the principal moderators at promed for a long time (Jack Woodall). He and the rest know I'm maintaining this page, and they're glad it's kept up to date, it's helpful. I think some news sources might be using it. Jtamad (talk) 01:29, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi John,
I've now added an image at the Wikipedia page: Wikipedia:2016 yellow fever epidemic in Angola
I don't have any available map in vector-format for sub-regions of the countries, but at least this one gives a rough overview of the situation.
Some sources have already started using "Central Africa" instead of just "Angola" or "Angola/Congo" so I used this for the map as well.
Best regards,

Fat contents in food

Hi there, I have a question regarding the bar-chart image in this page : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat , which was contributed by you. I did some digging about 2% milk and the fat content seems to be what it is labeled for - 2% (reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_content_of_milk). However on the image you posted, it looks to be about 68-70% saturated fat content. Thats a big discrepency. Unless i am mis-interpreting, in which case would you please care to explain, and possibly label it somewhere on the image?

Thanks and regards,

Ratin — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ratin3 (talk • contribs) 21:08, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Ratin. The fats are given as percentage of their total fat. Thus 2% milk would have a total fat of about 2%, and these 2% consists to 68-70% of saturated fats. I've clarified this on the image description. Mikael Häggström (talk) 06:20, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Arterial system picture - descent of anterior tibial artery

Hello,

I really appreciate your picture of the arterial system, but I think there is something weird about it.

The anterior tibial artery goes down the front of the lower limb, and should connect to the arteria dorsalis pedis, which is supposed to go on the medial side of the foot. However, in your picture, the anterior tibial artery procedes to an artery on the lateral side of the foot.

This is perplexing, but I'd greatly appreciate if you could explain or amend it.

Category:X-rays of the feet by Nevit Dilmen

Hi,

Mikael, you have created a User category for my that is neither a category that I maintain or endorse. Please delete Category:X-rays of the feet by Nevit Dilmen. All the images that you have moved to that category where properly categorised in relevant categories. Please Undo the edits too. I appreciate your efforts but this has done more damage than help. It has resulted in orphanisation of the relevant images. Regards, --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 07:58, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello Nevit,
I'm sorry the classification made them appear as orphaned. I've now removed the user category-template from it [2] and asked at User talk:Steinsplitter to have the orphan-tags removed.
I do think, however, that these images need a more specific classification than simply Category:X-rays of the feet. Since I didn't find any better specification on the image descriptions, I think an uploader-based categorization is better than nothing. An alternative would be something like Category:X-rays of the feet that lack image descriptions.

Hi Mikael,

Do you still have the Excel file source of File:Fat composition in foods.png by any chance? It would be very helpful as it would make it possible to create an SVG - easily translatable - version. If you do, let me know, you can send it to me through [4] for example and I'll make the SVG file, while making sure to credit you as the original author. The RedBurn (talk) 06:24, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll try and make a new one from these. The RedBurn (talk) 09:01, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi Mikael, so I dont know if you're automatically tagged, although I put you up as 'author': I translated the labeling only (and adjusted the width slightly to fit the words in) of your image.
Since Im still new to wikipedia (and all its sister projects) as far as editing and contributing goes, could you have a quick look if I uploaded it correctly - without any faux-pas?
Can I use it this way File:Taille-Hüft-Verhältnis.png? Or would you like me to take it down and just use the english version instead?
I translated it because the german translation of "waist" is confusing since it means both - the german "bauch" (actual waist) and "taille" (waistline). The translation of the waist-hip ratio is also easily to be misunderstood because it's translated to "taille-hüft-verhältnis" although you would not measure the waistline but instead the actual waist.
Uhhh.. well yeah, if you could just take a look. :) I will wait before using it, until you respond back. Have a nice day! --Shendoah (talk) 12:15, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for the translation, Shendoah! It's been long since I had German classes, but I'm sure it will do well in articles. I've added an overview of the different versions to each of the images. Mikael Häggström (talk) 12:53, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Xray Image Use Permission

Dear Dr. Mikael Haggstrom,

My name is Kyle and I am creating a website to help medical students learn how to read and interpret x-ray images. I came across several of your x-ray images on Wikimedia Commons and would absolutely love to use them on my membership-based website. Will you allow me to use them and how would you like to be attributed on my site? Also, is there any way to remove arrows on crop images? If so, how would I properly attribute the changes to the image?

The images I am interested in so far are:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Radiograph_of_Barton%27s_fracture.jpg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shoulder_dislocation,_Y-projection_before_reduction.jpg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CT_of_a_pertrochanteric_fracture.jpg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Intraoperative_acetabular_fracture,_original.jpg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:X-ray_of_mildly_compressed_hip_fracture.jpg

Thank you so much for your consideration and your work. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kylebarner1 (talk) 20:44, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Kyle,
I am delighted to hear that you find these images useful for your site. These can all be attributed as for example:
I don't know any simple way of removing arrows in cropped images for these examples, but let me know if you can't find any arrow-less original of an image you want to use, so I can look it up.
Best regards,

Pigmented skin lesions diagram as bar chart

Hello Mikael,

I saw the pigmented skin lesions pie chart and wondered, if it could be helpful to represent the data as a bar chart. Pie charts are often hard to interpret correctly as they rely on comparison of angles rather than size (See e.g Stephen Few on pie charts (pdf)). It might also become easier to understand the different types of lesions in a pie chart. I could give it a go myself, too. --Simulo (talk) 22:19, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello Simulo
For the purpose of differential diagnoses, I personally find pie charts to be preferable, since they give a quick idea of the incidence of each diagnosis as compared to the sum of all. Nevertheless, feel free to make a bar chart as well. Mikael Häggström (talk) 23:33, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Could you please provide a French version of a map?

Hello Mikael,

Would it be possible to provide a French version of this file: Expulsion judios-en.svg, please?

Here are the translations:

In the map
  • Wales -> "Pays de Galles" (or "Galles" if it doesn't fit)
  • England -> "Angleterre"
  • Netherlands -> "Pays Bas"
  • Lithuania -> "Lithuanie"
  • Germany -> "Allemagne*" (could you please keep the asterisk?)
  • Silesia -> "Silésie"
  • Poland -> "Pologne"
  • Austria -> "Autriche*" (could you please keep the asterisk?)
  • Hungary -> "Hongrie"
  • Papal states -> "États pontificaux"
  • Provence -> OK
  • Portugal -> OK
  • Spain -> "Espagne"
  • Maghreb -> OK
  • Sardinia -> "Sardaigne"
  • Tunis -> "Tunisie"
  • Sicilia -> "Sicile"
  • Naples -> OK
  • Crimea -> "Crimée"
  • Ottoman empire -> "Empire ottoman"
  • Egypt -> "Égypte"
In the insert
  • Expulsion of Jews -> "Expulsion des Juifs"
  • Areas of expulsion -> "Régions d'expulsion"
  • Resettlement areas -> "Régions de réinstallation"
  • If possible, add "*: Saint Empire romain germanique" or "*: Saint Empire romain"

Also, do you still think the map is inaccurate? Is the "Inaccurate-map-disputed" template still necessary?

Thank you very much!

Best regards, --Daehan (talk) 08:50, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

I am sorry, Daehan, I am not able to make such an image with my current work schedule. However, you can make the edits yourself if you for example download Inkscape. Alternatively, you can open the file in a simple text editor and make the changes within the coding. It seems the factual accuracy relates the the borders of Lithuania and Poland. Around that time it may be termed Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, but I am not sure about the exact years or borders. Mikael Häggström (talk) 17:21, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello, an anonymous user submitted a few days ago an error report in the Spanish Wikipedia saying that promyelocytes don't present secondary granulation and thus, they should be all equal in this file. I checked this in the Ross Atlas of Histology (7th edition, page 317 of the Spanish translation) and they seem to be right about this, so I made a correction to the Spanish version of the file. Since you vectorized the original, maybe you're interested in assessing this. Best regards, -sasha- (talk) 14:32, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello -sasha-. I find the edit to be reasonable, and I'll make the same edit to the English version when I have the time. Mikael Häggström (talk) 18:56, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Thyrohyoid muscle drawing origin - Wikimedia Commons 8984662

Dear Dr. Häggström, greetings.

Do you mind telling me what pubblication does that drawing of the Thyrohyoid muscle comes from?

I have found a amateur -- but well executed -- matching drawing and, which is an almost exact copy, yet, the author let's it implied that the drawing is of their own authorship.

I hope I can hear back from you.

Sincerely,

Pedro. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ganzama (talk • contribs) 19:33, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello Pedro
If you mean File:Thyrohyoid muscle.PNG, it's originally from the 20th U.S. edition of Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body. It was originally published in 1918 and therefore lapsed into the public domain, so there's no legal requirement to attribute the original publisher. You could argue that it would still be a nice thing to do though.
I hope that helps.

Massively created malformed templates

I discovered, that you have massively created malformed templates. In 2011, there was a deletion request Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Brain - all versions). Full list is here: [6]. I even don't know where to start deleting/moving/renaming. Eg unacceptable solution with templates:

I see that you are an experienced user. Can you explain the situation?--Estopedist1 (talk) 22:16, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello Estopedist1. I can agree that Template:Midsummer at Årsnäs, Gallery is not necessary as there already is a category, and I can accept a deletion of this one if necessary. For Template:Midsummer at Årsnäs, Source and Template:Midsummer celebrations at Årsnäs, File description, on the other hand, these serve the purpose of allowing corrections and changes thereof to appear simultaneously in all articles where they are transcluded, instead of having to make such changes in every single image description page. Mikael Häggström (talk) 22:40, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
I haven't seen such strange solution in Commons. One gallery pages (Midsummer celebrations at Årsnäs, Sweden with a hatnote) does the job, and no need such strange templates Estopedist1 (talk) 07:46, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Image formats

Hi, thank you for uploading File:COVID-19 in China 2020 to April 20, 2022.jpg to Commons. Here's a tip: Use the right image format for the kind of image. As a general rule, this is JPEG for photographs, and PNG for most other kinds of images. Using the wrong format can bloat the file size and/or degrade the quality of the image. Most modern graphics applications will give you the choice between these formats among others. See also Commons:File types#Images. Good luck. Smjg (talk) 23:04, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Indeed, png is better in this case. I've replaced that image with such version now. Mikael Häggström (talk) 12:00, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Puberty data on timetable chart is inaccurate

Hello. You created the child development stages chart that is on a lot of pages on Wikipedia relating to child and adolescent development. However, I believe your range for pubertal development is not accurate. Even in boys, puberty is effectively complete by 16/17, yet you have it go up to nearly 19/20, which is not the case. I think you should re-edit the image to better reflect Tanner stage data. Girls typically reach tanner stage 5 at around 14, and boys reach it around age 15. Therefore, I would have it be mostly green for girls around 11-14, petering out afterwards, and the same with boys around 12-15, as that is when the bulk of their puberty takes place.
