PD-Polishsymbol[edit]

Hi, i ask you because you are a Polish speaking contributor and familiar with w:en:Template:PD-PolishGov which is used here as {{PD-Polishsymbol}}. A User requested, that images are falling under the term material, can you help clarify this at Template talk:PD-Polishsymbol or Commons:Deletion requests/File:RPD AMW.jpg? Thanks in advance for your helping, --Martin H. (talk) 20:36, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree this is a very broad interpretation of government documents, almost like US Government. The quotes used seem to support it but I will ask around on Polish Wiki. --Jarekt (talk) 05:04, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much in advance. --Martin H. (talk) 14:09, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pozdrowiania --Jarekt (talk) 14:01, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Chetnie pomoge w przyszlych numerach, jednak wieksza liczba perspektyw z Commons moze byc przydatna. --Jarekt (talk) 14:14, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Extended variant.
svg version

Hi Jarekt - I saw that you created this File:Over-categorization.svg. Thank you for it. However, both this image and the original do not show one important aspect of the categorisation, which is that while "bypass" links are not okay, two PARALLEL paths can lead from one parent category downwards to the same image. I think it would be nice to have that. Labelling the folders would also be good, so that you can talk about them when discussing it with a newbie.

Using the example picture you made, I therefore created this (excuse me using MS paint of all things - that is why I am asking you to produce an SVG version ;-) Ingolfson (talk) 02:09, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done Good idea --Jarekt (talk) 04:51, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - but would you mind changing the "C" to a "B1" and "B2" as in my example? What I was trying to convey there is that these are PARALLEL categories. Meaning that they sit on the same level just one step below A. That is visible from the arrows and the placement as well, but I just thought that would help. If we ever (maybe to illustrate a sub-point, not for general use) need to show a third level of categories, we can then call it C1, C2, C3... Ingolfson (talk) 06:02, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done did the corrections --Jarekt (talk) 03:05, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Witam. Pewny jesteś tej edycji? Mam wrażenie, że jednak getto znacznie częściej funkcjonuje z nazwą miasta z czasów okupacji. Zerknij też na to: pl:Dyskusja:Litzmannstadt Ghetto#zdecydowanie Getto Litzmannstadt. pozdrawiam Piastu (talk) 08:05, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nazwa Łódź/Lodz Ghetto jest dużo czesciej używana w literaturze angielsko-języcznej niż "Litzmannstadt Ghetto"
Google Book Search:

Renaming an image[edit]

Hi, I saw your name on the list of "trusted users" for image renaming. A request was made to rename File:Http_en.wikipedia.org_wiki_Image_Akbar_lg.jpg, but that request was not put forth by a trusted user. It would be great if you could look into it. The current name is quite cumbersome. Thank! 128.174.237.100 20:36, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mielec[edit]

Question[edit]

Hi Jarekt - you being the only person I (sort of) know who does SVGs, could you have a look at this file? File:Crane machine slewing platform.svg? It displays fine there, but as a thumbnail, on here for example, there is this rectangular black area in the bottomleft corner. Is that something you can edit? Cheers for having a look, Ingolfson (talk) 07:27, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at it in using inkscape program and there seem to be no objects in this neighborhood. Nothing I can edit. I will ask at Commons:Graphics_village_pump. Maybe someone there knows how to fix it. --Jarekt (talk) 21:15, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photographs of identifiable people again[edit]

I have made some changes to Commons:Photographs of identifiable people/Proposal in response to a variety of helpful suggestions that users have made on the talk page. You have already commented there; could I ask you to have a look again, and to consider whether you would like to express an opinion in the Poll towards the bottom of the page? Many thanks. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 18:31, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jarekt/Archiv!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Whoa![edit]

I've looked to my watchlist and I've seen quite a hundreds of edits that were made by your bot. It is removing {{Location dec}} and adding {{Location}} I have no problem with this, yet it surprised me a bit. However, the tool http://www.giswiki.org/hjl_geocoding.htm is still having only retired templates as an only option. What to do? It would be good to replace it in the tool but I don't know who in control there. Aktron (talk) 21:01, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The bot was changing {{Location dms}} to {{Location}}. We are trying to retire bunch of location templates redirecting to {{Location dec}} and {{Location}} templates. Thanks for a tip about the giswiki as the source of {{Location dms}}. I will see if there is a way to contact some about it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:01, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your RfA[edit]

Dear Jarekt, I'm afraid I had to close your RfA as unsuccessful given the limited support your candidacy presented. I believe you may gather more support in the future if you get a bit more involved in areas closer to administrator work. It's rather boring, though, so don't be sad you didn't get to be an admin now :). Ahonc left you a question about your bot on the RfA page, you might want to reply him. Prośba o wykonanie zadania przez bota[edit]

Witaj!

Proszę o przeniesienie zawartości Category:Reliefs in Sopot, do Category:Reliefs in Sopot, Poland. Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 23:36, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Zrobione --Jarekt (talk) 02:37, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 22:41, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chetnie pomoge ale nie jestem pewien jak. Moj Bot liste plikow do poprawienia i informacje co poprawic. --Jarekt (talk) 04:15, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Miałem na myśli taką edycję. Odstęp po cztery linijki między poszczególnymi plikami. Wtedy łatwie będzie mi dokonać niezbędnych poprawek. A nazbierało się. Jeśli to niewykonalne, śmiało mów.
Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 13:46, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is very strange. The same code at user:jarekt/a was used to create some of the creator templates at user:jarekt/c which show dates in test image File:Climbing_in_Joshua_Tree_NP.jpg. May be the problem is caching of the pages. --Jarekt (talk) 03:20, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User:R. Engelhardt/gallery and other galleries of mine[edit]

Hello, why did You modify my galleries? I can't see, what is better now. Normally it is not usual to modify User sites. But I am always willing to learn. Greetings, --R. Engelhardt (talk) 20:48, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was working on retiring rarely used geocoding templates, Template:Coordinate was one of them. I had a bot replace all the uses files but then noticed that 3 personal galleries use them a lot too, so I modified them as well. I was not trying to improve it, but rather I have a Commons:Deletion_requests/Template:Coordinate for this template and figured it would be unfriendly gesture if it is deleted and than your page do not show properly. In case the template is not deleted you can always revert the changes. --Jarekt (talk) 22:26, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removing type:landmark[edit]

Hi, why is type:landmark [3] not supported? Thx --Packa (talk) 21:10, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to replace files using {{Coor dms}} with {{Location}} family templates. In {{Location}} template type:landmark is the only one supported and is automatically attached to all coordinates using location template. But in case of your file the change from {{Coor dms}} with {{Location}} did not happen. I will tweak the bot and run it again to catch the ones missed. --Jarekt (talk) 02:12, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Jarek, I understand it (I don’t know, why is {{Coor dms}} in my photograph used, while I am using {{Location}} but it is not important). But I don’t know that type:landmark is the only one supported, I know only it is a default value. --Packa (talk) 08:07, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I am not sure what happens when you provide other type than landmark. You might have to ask this question at COM:GEO talk page. My understanding is that type:landmark and type:.... will be passed to https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=User_talk:Jarekt/Archiv/2009&params=. --Jarekt (talk) 12:27, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

template:coor dms[edit]

Hi Jarek, just seen the changes that you've made to the coords on my commons upload, I don't have a problem with this but do you know of a site other than the Geolocator website [4] where I can obtain the coords in the new format? Aviceda (talk) 07:50, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Page COM:GEO have all the official ways. On that page Google Maps: Method 1 uses Geolocator website you mentioned. The only thing you should do differently is to copy {{Location}} template string instead of {{Coor dms}}. You can also try one of the other methods. My favorite one is Google Maps: Method 2. --Jarekt (talk) 13:15, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help?[edit]

Could you see what to make of User:Krystian Kuchta's uploads? I see many uploads from a Polish image site, where the images have been uploaded by several different users, and no indication of a free license anywhere (as far as I see). Also File:Antoni Janusz.jpg, cropped (probably by the user) from an external source and then claimed to be "own work". Other uploads by this user are also doubtful. I have the impression it might be good if a Polish speaker tried to sort this out with him. For me, it just looks as if he's uploading other peoples' works without caring about copyrights, but maybe I'm missing something. Lupo 21:18, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree most of his uploads seem to be found on various websites and uploaded under {{PD-self}} or {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} licenses, sometimes with and sometimes without source. I left him a message in Polish Wiki. I am afraid that unless he has some kind of explanation than we might have to delete most of his uploads. --Jarekt (talk) 03:47, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mur getta[edit]

Witaj

Serdecznie pozdrawiam:

ImageBoxes[edit]

Hi Jarekt! You seem to be one of the few people interested in getting this feature to work. I took a look at it and decided to rewrite it completely. If you like, you could try out ImageAnnotator instead... (installation instructions are on the linked page). If you could beta-test that a little, that'd be great. I did test it already quite a bit, and it works fine on a wide array of browsers (see the documentation), but I don't have one of the most important ones: IE7. Anyway, take a look at it. Comments Shadow a little distracting, but nice colours and sharp --Ianare 00:05, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jarekt, You mentioned there is an issue with {{Coord}} and that you were going to clean it up. I'm just wondering: wouldn't simply redirecting {{Coord}} to {{Location}} do the trick? I haven't done it yet in case I'm missing something. Cheers, Pruneautalk 07:30, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that will work: coord seems to have the same parameters as location. The only issue is that original coord before it was retired was in a form which could be placed in galleries under images. {{Location}} can not be used that way. But it is not the issue in current set since it is only used in files. But in general I prefer a template replacement (in all files) over redirect - it is a cleaner solution. Another issue is why do people still using it and how do they know about it - I suspect some automatic tool which was not updated. --Jarekt (talk) 16:27, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps {{Coord}} should be redirected to {{Object location}}. Coordinates in wikipedia are normally those of the object, not of the camera location. Sv1xv (talk) 08:15, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User subpages[edit]

Hi, Jarekt. I noticed that some of your user subpages are automatically categorized in lots of categories where they shouldn't be, because they include dozens of creator templates. Please find a solution to this problem whereby you can display the templates on your subpage without it being automatically categorized. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 06:09, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Internationalisation[edit]

Hello, I recognized that your bot adds the international templates {{int:filedesc}} and {{int:license}}. I wanted to change them (remove the colon in the license template), but I did not find them anywhere or find a way to change that. Can you help me? --Schlurcher (talk) 09:37, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In order to get rid of colon in license template you need to ask at talk page of MediaWiki:License. That is where this string is stored. --Jarekt (talk) 12:41, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, what does that mean when your bot puts a Creator template in this category? What should be done about those templates? No hint in the edit summary, no hint in the category itself...? --Eusebius (talk) 12:43, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The category was created 13 minutes before you wrote. I did not have a chance to write anything. I added explanation in the Category:Creator templates to fix and Template talk:Creator. --Jarekt (talk) 13:06, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Availability of photos from NAC[edit]

Hello Jarekt, I am writing a few articles on 20th century history for the Spanish wikipedia and I am looking for illustratins for them. I have noticed you have uploaded into wikimedia some pictures (such as http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Warsaw_Uprising_-_Wedding.jpg) from Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe (NAC), where I have found myself some very interesting ones.Though I have asked them directly, I was wondering whether you could tell me if there is some sort of agreement similar to the one with the Bundesarchiv so that pictures can be safely uploaded into wikimedia under a free license... Would you know? Is that all right? Is there a way to remove the watermark from the pictures? Just wondering whether you may now. Thanks in advance for your help!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 21:07, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is no agreement similar to Bundesarchiv with any polish archives. All WWII images I upload are based on {{PD-Polish}} which require a proof that a photograph was published in Poland prior to 1994. I do not like scanning images from books, but if I find an image on the web which was published in a polish book I upload them. My uploads are limited to images found in few books I have. See subdirectories of Category:Warsaw Uprising photos by source for 3 of the books I used. What images are you looking for? --Jarekt (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Unfortunately, the images I have found (quite a lot of them, as a matter of fact) may or may not have been published in a Polish book or journal prior to that date... The kind of images I am looking for are politically relevant images of the interwar period such as, for instance, http://www.audiovis.nac.gov.pl/obraz/28366/0f4509954584d1d3b69c4f7e1589c439/ (Hungarian PM Bárdossy signing the Anticomintern Pact), http://www.audiovis.nac.gov.pl/obraz/28400/0f4509954584d1d3b69c4f7e1589c439/, http://www.audiovis.nac.gov.pl/obraz/29520/24ef417a0e0b34359fa374a20808a063/ (Slovak President Tiso visiting Hitler), etc. Though the Bundesarchiv does have images on these politicians and events, they are not digitalized yet and hence they are not available...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 08:50, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures of Racot[edit]

Przypadkowo mam dojscie do pewnego archiwum, w pewnym miescie portowym w Niemczech gdzie mozna znalezc zdjecia z przygotowanymi do transportu - wiadomo gdzie - Zydami - z oryginalnym nazistowskim podpisem "Judenevakuierung" / Ewakuacja Zydow.

External image links in SVG files[edit]

Either put an embedded raster in the file (as opposed to an external image link) or request that the SVG file be deleted, because a file that doesn't display and never will display (as long as there is an external image link in the file, something which is not allowed here) is of absolutely no use to anybody)... AnonMoos (talk) 03:42, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jarekt, thanks for correcting the error in the geodata, I just mixed things uo. Do you happen to know how you can add info on the direction the viewer is facing? I vaguely recall that it is possible to add a direction that will result in the symbol on Google Maps pointing in a certain direction, e.g. NE or SSW or things like that. It isn't really important, but if possible... Regards, MartinD (talk) 13:54, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You add an extra parameter heading:NE. See documentation of {{Location}} for more details. --Jarekt (talk) 15:17, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

My watchlist gave me the info that you have removed the category 'Soldier'? WHY? There are clearly two soldiers visible on the tank. So, the category is right? Or isn't it?--A.Hakansson (talk) 13:15, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for bothering, but i am new here, so i ask.
In case you did not found it yet some general rules of Commons categorization can be found in commons:Categories, but general idea is that Commons software makes it very hard to find images in categories with more than 200 images, so we try to keep number of images categories low. As a result very specific categories are better than general categories. In specific case of categories I changed in your File:Tank in front of Gucci.jpg, I noticed that there seemed to be several redundant categories resulting in likely over-categorization. Since you had category:Beijing I removed category:China. Since you had Category:People's Liberation Army. I removed Category:Military and Category:Soldier. --Jarekt (talk) 13:58, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your explanation! It is quite hard for a newbie like me to find a way through this jungle!--A.Hakansson (talk) 10:33, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot problems[edit]

Your bot is incorrectly categorizing certain Thomas Eakins works - File:Map of France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy J2.jpg is a drawing, not a painting; File:'Lincoln and Grant', bronze sculptures by William Rudolf O'Donovan (men) & Thomas Eakins (horses), 1893-1894, Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, New York City.JPG are bronze sculptures, not paintings.

I suggest you consult en:List of works by Thomas Eakins. Anything listed as "oil", "watercolor", or "painting" is a painting. Things listed as ink, pencil, etc are drawings. Raul654 (talk) 23:21, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I know about it - most of Thomas Eakins works were paintings so my bot moved all his works to painting category. Than I will move by hand photographs and drawings, give me a hand if you feel like it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:23, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm busy scanning and uploading the rest of his photographs (about 250 more) and identifying the ones we already have. Raul654 (talk) 01:30, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

gen. Duch[edit]

Z bólem serca zmuszony więc byłem skorygować własny błąd i usunąć trzy z siedmiu fotografii zeskanowanych przeze mnie z tej książki.

Witam!

Rodaku w Ameryce. Najlepiej możesz mi pomóc. Aby nie było bałaganu w kategorii Gdańsk Town Hall, stworzyłem category:Gdańsk Main City Town Hall. Coś mi mówi, że ta nazwa to pomieszanie z poplątaniem. Jak Ty przetłumaczyłbyś Gdański Ratusz Głównego Miasta? Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 15:57, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Takze bym zaproponowal dodanie polskich nazw retuszow do category:Gdańsk New Town Hall, category:Gdańsk Old Town Hall, category:Present Gdańsk Town Hall. --Jarekt (talk) 18:11, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A może by tak Town Hall Of Main City Of Gdańsk? Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 21:01, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, uzylem google który znalazł na temat
  • "Gdańsk Main Town" - 12,300 stron
  • "Gdańsk Main City" - 1,230 stron
  • "gdańsk main town hall" - 9,490 stron
  • "gdańsk town hall" - 9,200 stron
  • "gdańsk main city hall" - 9 stron
  • "gdańsk main city town hall" - 283 stron
  • "gdańsk main town city hall" - 10 stron
  • "Town Hall of Główne Miasto Gdańsk" - 0 stron
  • "Town Hall Of Main City Of Gdańsk" - 0 stron

Category:Media with erroneous locations[edit]

I'm sorry; I didn't notice that you were correcting anything and thought that you had done nothing other than moving the location template. I'll fix them immediately. Nyttend (talk) 20:37, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've found the error with the church picture, but what's wrong with the school picture? {{Location|40|48|13|N|81|22|12|W}} seems fine to me: there aren't more than 59 minutes or seconds anywhere, I have three numbers, north, three numbers, and west, and there aren't any abnormal parameters; but it still tells me that something is wrong. It seems to think that the template is in the Eastern Hemisphere, but I can't figure out why. Nyttend (talk) 20:41, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what is wrong - I had to retype it to fix it. I suspect some non-printable characters, letters that look like numbers or something like that. I often clean up this directory but rarely run into problem like this. --Jarekt (talk) 02:23, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed it again. I think it was an non-printable character after W. --Jarekt (talk) 02:36, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Creator templates[edit]

I wasn't aware that the creator template now can do categorization. Thanks for updating Creator:A.E. Roberts. However, there's a small problem with your changes: the page is now placed first on Category:Photographers from Australia, when in fact it should be sorted under "R". Seems {{Creator}} would need besides a "Homecat" parameter an additional parameter to indicate whether to use the Sortkey also on that Homecat. Otherwise we'll just end up with all Creator pages sorted under " ", which isn't helpful at all. Lupo 07:46, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed Creator:A.E. Roberts even more bring it to the way most of the new creator templates are categorized. I guess it would help if I followed my own guidelines. For a while I was looking at standardizing our 3.5k creator template collection. I added the Homecat parameter to creator template in attempt to standardize categorization. Over 100k images use creator templates and most creator templates autocategorize images, making them very hard to subcategorize. As a result I patrol new creator pages in addition to fixing the old ones. --Jarekt (talk) 14:13, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Eugene Delacroix-Nadar.jpg is not an exact duplicate of File:Félix Nadar 1820-1910 portraits Eugène Delacroix.jpg, we keep different photographs/scans of paintings and other images :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 05:34, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Same goes for File:Eugène Delacroix - Massacre at Chios.jpg and File:Eugène Delacroix - Le Massacre de Scio.jpg :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 09:13, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I never said it was an exact duplicate; the template I placed ({{Duplicate}}) says "This image is an exact duplicate or scaled-down version of ...". I was labeling low resolution versions of painting where we have high-res versions. --Jarekt (talk) 01:57, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They are not scaled-up/down versions of the same photo. They were different photos of the same painting :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 05:03, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, they appear to be scans of the same photo, one is cropped and also scaled down. Admittedly not much difference. I'll try and find their source. --Tony Wills (talk) 09:27, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hej.

--Jarekt (talk) 14:19, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birth/death date in Creator templates[edit]

Hi Jarekt, thank you very much for your good work on that templates and all related images. However, I dont think the categorization of this creator templates, so to say maintenance or source templates, into the content categories Category:Births by year and Category:Deaths by year is a good idea. --Martin H. (talk) 22:08, 22 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I heard that comment before, see Template_talk:Creator#Categories_for_the_year_of_birth_and_death. My thinking was the standardization of creator pages and many of them had Category:Births by year and Category:Deaths by year categories, so I just automatically added them to all the creator pages. Another reason is that I was trying to remove categories in general from creator pages. A lot of people edit those pages and a lot do not understand includeonly and noinclude categories, and as a result ~3k of our creator pages add autocategories. While trying to remove manually added categories from creator pages I was trying to include some automatic ones to add some more connections from creator pages to the rest of the project, and Category:Births by year and Category:Deaths by year categories were the most logical choice. At the same time I recognize the irony of trying to fix problems caused by autocategorising images while arguing for autocategorizing creator pages. What I would propose to do is to open another discussion on this on creator template talk page and drop notes on Category:Births by year and Category:Deaths by year about the discussion. I still like the idea, but if more people are unhappy about it than we will remove them. --Jarekt (talk) 02:51, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer, Template talk:Creator is the best place for discussion. --Martin H. (talk) 03:22, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion notification Some of categories "by alphabet" has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Jarekt, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Are all categories added to the image pages directly so that we can remove the template categorization? A good idea for adding the pd tag and starting to categorize the documents by book. --Martin H. (talk) 14:15, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The autocategorization to Category:Old Manuscripts from the Deutsche Fotothek will be removed. As you noticed, it can be removed right now but I was experimenting with other tweeks to the template (see yet unused {{Fotothek-Author2}} and {{Fotothek-Creator}} which will hopefully replace current {{Fotothek-Author}}) and was planning do them both at the same time. All images in Category:Old Manuscripts from the Deutsche Fotothek also have temporary category:Images from the Deutsche Fotothek by ... category (see [5]), which I will use to group images together. But at the moment I am identifying categories already created for individual Fotothek books. I created {{Book}} - almost identical to {{DE Wikisource Book}} but without autocatogorization to DE Wikisource specific categories, and will try to use it for categories of Fotothek books.
By the way, could you have a look at Category:Document collection by Günter Rapp I created the category for all the Fotothek images attributed to Günter Rapp, which seem to be works related to the windmills and collected by him but created by other authors. The Author is likely incorrect in all those files and they all are missing dates of creation, but the dates and names are often in the image description. Not sure what to do about them. --Jarekt (talk) 22:42, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, if you need any help e.g. with language please ask. --Martin H. (talk) 19:43, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Location/deg2dms[edit]

Hello Jarekt, We have a small problem with {{Location/deg2dms}} which seems to truncate rather than round off the result (2 decimals). For exemple: {{Object location|45|22|42|N|1|17|21.7|E|region:FR_type:landmark}} displays 41.99"N instead of 42"N. I have to put between 42.0000000001 and 42.01 to display a correct 42 :

Object location45° 22′ 42″ N, 1° 17′ 21.7″ E Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo
Object location45° 22′ 42″ N, 1° 17′ 21.7″ E Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo

that's what makes me think of a problem of truncature (41.999999999 giving "41.99") (I had a look in the model, maybe in the formula "360000*{{{1}}} mod 6000 div 100}"). Could you have a look at it ? (I don't master at all the model language, but I suspect a "round 2" to be added somewhere in that formula ?). Regards, Jack ma (talk) 19:25, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done I've changed the formula into "360000*(abs({{{1}}}) + 0.5) mod 6000 div 100". It seems to work fine. Jack ma (talk) 16:00, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am glad it is resolved. I noticed frequent coordinates like "41.99" but did not tried to debug it.--Jarekt (talk) 16:24, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a moment, would you complete the moves mentioned in Category talk:World War II by country. I'd like to clean out the ones using {{Move}}. -- User:Docu at 04:50, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I actually did not start any moves yet. I am planning to get to it. Translation of template NationAndOccupation[edit]

Hello Jarekt, I have seen that you have translated the templates {{CountryAdjective}} and {{Occupation}} to the Polish language. Could you translate the new template {{NationAndOccupation}}, too? This would be great! It should not be too much work:

  • If the Polish language uses the sentence order <Country Adjective> <Occupation>, <Occupation>, <and> <Occupation>, just copy the English version of the template and change all occurences of “en” to “pl” and all occurences of “and” to the Polish equivalent.
  • If the Polish sentence order is rather <Country Adjective> <Occupation>, <Occupation> <and> <Occupation> (no comma before the “and”), copy the German version instead and change all occurences of “de” to “pl” and all occurences of “und” to the Polish equivalent.
  • If the Polish sentence order is rather <Occupation>, <Occupation> <and> <Occupation> <Country Adjective>, copy the Spanish version of the template instead and change all occurences of “es” to “pl” and all occurences of “y” to the Polish equivalent.
  • (Only if the Polish sentence order is radically different, things would be a bit more complicate.)

I hope you can help. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:25, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Idea for global find and replace operations in Creator templates[edit]

Hello Jarekt, you asked me if I had any ideas about other global find and replace operations I would like to perform on the Creator templates. Here is an idea: some Creator templates contain a Name entry like the following:

  • Name = [[:w:FirstName(s) Surname|Surname, FirstName(s)]]
  • Name = [[:en:FirstName(s) Surname|Surname, FirstName(s)]]

Maybe there also the following forms:

  • Name = [[FirstName(s) Surname|Surname, FirstName(s)]]
  • Name = [[:Category:FirstName(s) Surname|Surname, FirstName(s)]]

In my opinion this is wrong: only the Sortkey entry should use the order <Surname>‘,’ <FirstName(s)>, but the Name entry should be just in the ordinary order <FirstName(s)> <Surname>. I have corrected some of these Creator templates manually but there may be left some others. Could two global RegEx find and replace actions like:

Find: (Name *= *\[\[[^\]|]+\|)([^\]]+), *([^\]]+)\]\]
Replace by: \1\3 \2\]\]

and then

Find: (Name *= *\[\[([^\]|]+))\|\2\]\]
Replace by: \1\]\]

solve this issue? (The exact coding of the RegEx depends of the RegEx engine you use, of course.)

Best, --Aristeas (talk) 18:30, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I removed a lot of those by hand as well but bot can do it better. I will try to run it this week. --Jarekt (talk) 15:59, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, finally had a moment to get the regular expressions to work properly. See the final code for AWB Custom Module used at User:JarektBot/AWB_Modules#Change_name_format. --Jarekt (talk) 08:09, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Location/layout[edit]

Hi Jarekt, there seems to be a problem with one of the links added to the template. According to the label, it's to display " This and other images at their location on". As this didn't work for me, I removed it for now. -- User:Docu at 06:15, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added OpenStreetMap sinte there was ongoing work to provide ability to see commons images on their maps, and as a friendly gesture to a sister Wiki project, beeing at that point integrated to work with Wikipedias, and using Commons as a repository of their images. But you are right that at this moment the website does not show "other images at their locations". I will start discussion about the "to add/or not to add" the link. --Jarekt (talk) 16:07, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a good idea, but it should at least work somehow. If there is a way to use it with Bing, we could add this one instead. -- User:Docu at 16:34, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jarekt, thank you again for your list User:Jarekt/CreatorTemplates! With its help I have checked and improved all Creator templates used 200 times or more (and will continue with the 100+ items). While doing so I have noticed that the Template:Ströhl is used on around 248 pages. Obviously, it should be replaced by Creator:Hugo Gerhard Ströhl and then deleted. Could you do this replacement in an automated way or do we need to replace the template manually on every page? Best, --Aristeas (talk) 17:30, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll replace this. Thanks for your work anyway! --Martin H. (talk) 19:32, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This clean up was on my to-do list, so thanks for fixing it. However, somewhere in all this clean-up the category:Hugo Gerhard Ströhl is no longer added to all those files, as it was before. I put all his files into Category:Coats of arms by Hugo Gerhard Ströhl.--Jarekt (talk) 07:16, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
