Thank you Ktdk (talk) 10:41, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I challenged for nomination of this file for deletion, as your reasoning " At this extremely small file size/resolution these are simply web grabs" is not a valid argument - the resolution of a photo has nothing to do with whether or not is is correctly licenced (in fact the file size is not particularly small at 1500 x 1125), and there appears to be an OTRS ticket covering the file - if you think that the OTRS ticket does not apply to this photo or is incorrect or is applied to the wrong file then this can be discussed at a proper deletion discussion.Nigel Ish (talk) 17:42, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yep that is fair enough - looks like the latest user reuploaded a file as well as contributing loads of copyvios. I'll look at it further later and comment on the DR. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 06:46, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If there is an issue with the photo, it may be whether it was actually uploaded at russianplanes.net and has since been deleted (it doesn't appear to be there now, at least not at the required link) or has been supplied separately by email as required by the apparent conditions of the release.Nigel Ish (talk) 17:02, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I have serious doubts about the validity of licensing of this one. However it has OTRS approval so there is little else to be done. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:33, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, you've wrote on my discussion page that the two files above may be deleted because their copyright status are incorrect. How could it be since I made those myself using Figma, a free online software ? I based my work on multiple images of the probe in order to draw it as precisely as I could, but I never copy/paste anything that wasn't my property in making them. Each line and color of it was added by hand. Then I don't know what I could add with "Own work". So please indicate me what I did wrong. I have a hard time trying to understand how Commons works. I spent hours making those for the sole purpose of using them to illustrate wikipedia. Waiting for your recommendations, and thank you for your time. --Kaynouky (talk) 13:47, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It looks very likely to me that this is derivative of any image here. Unless you are James Head then you do not have the copyright to either of the images. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:28, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Aoraki (Mt. Cook) & Mount Tasman - Lake Matheson (New Zealand)[edit]

Hello - I was just informed that this image could be in violation of copyright rules. In 2013, I did, indeed, take this photo (during a month-long excursion in New Zealand). It's been quite some time, but whatever information you may require, please let me know and I will endeavour to provide it. Thank you, Ryan (Ryancoke2020 (talk) 15:14, 24 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]

@Herbythyme: Hey! - That link you provided to the image of Lake Matheson is, indeed, the identical photo. This is a bit surprising because I recognize the person's name who uploaded it (Corey). I can't identify much information about him according to that website, but if you're able to, his full name is Corey Koon. He's originally from South Carolina (may currently be living in North Carolina with his wife). I spent 30 or 31 days with Corey in New Zealand (in November, 2013) and, although I took that picture, I was happy to share the file with him at the time. I'm assuming he uploaded it to that site and likely other ones. Please give me a bit of time and I will find out more information. But, ultimately, you are correct - that's the same picture! I would simply tell you if I had uploaded it to that site, but I never did. Thank you for the heads up. Ryan (Ryancoke2020 (talk) 09:08, 25 July 2020 (UTC))[reply]

Trying to learn how copyrights work[edit]

Hello, it's me again. I'm looking on Flickr, trying to see if some images might be ok for uploading on wikimedia Commons, but I'm trying to not repeat the same mistakes, and I'm asking for your advice. Is "CC BY 2.0" enough to upload an image ? What about this one for example. Is it okay to upload it on Commons ? Or this one ?
Best regards, --Kaynouky (talk) 08:24, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly I am fairly busy currently so do not have the time to look at individual images. You need to make sure you are familiar with licensing here on Commons. That link should allow you to understand or find the info you need for any image. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:03, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of Betty Foxxx on Twitter or website[edit]

Hello.

I had uploaded a couple of photos of the actress Betty Foxxx but they have been deleted due to copyright problems. I thought that the photos uploaded to twitter or to the page that had taken it were not copyrighted.

Is there any possibility of using the photo if I have authorization from the page or from the twitter user? If possible, what do I have to do?

Thank you in advice — Preceding unsigned comment added by FARNSWORTH9999 (talk • contribs) 12:20, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you can find out who the copyright holder is you can get them to grant permission via COM:OTRS - I'm afraid that is the only option for such images. --Herby talk thyme 13:19, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You have claimed that i have commited a copyright violation in uploading a photo[edit]

hi,

that is my photo, i took it and i live in that building too. I have also uploaded it in the past on Flickr, here : https://www.flickr.com/photos/42071115@N02/4717255810/ Please remove the violation strike — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rtype909 (talk • contribs) 15:46, 8. Aug. 2020‎ (UTC)

Maybe - however it is "all rights reserved" on Flickr so cannot be hosted here. --Herby talk thyme 14:53, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, if it is really the upladers photo he surely can upload the picture on Commons with another permission than on flickr. Why not? Perhaps they should proof the fact they are the author, bot if that's clear, several licences on several platforms are possible. --Emha (talk) 19:05, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely - however permission would need to be provided via COM:OTRS to ensure protection for the copyright holder. --Herby talk thyme 06:44, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So, @Rtype909: this is not a copyright, but a permission problem. Could you be so kind to send us a written permission as describe on COM:OTRS? Thanks, --Emha (talk) 08:25, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK - I think that the user has ceased to be active. In practice the majority of such uploads are not by the creator of the image but simply someone who has grabbed an image from somewhere on the internet and claimed it was theirs. Sadly we cannot believe everything that users tell us about their uploads. Thanks for your concern. --Herby talk thyme 08:39, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Aah - that one. The image I tagged was not linked to Flickr but was apparently from Alamy - a stock image. That was the reason for dealing with it the way I did. It is certainly possible that the image was uploaded to Flickr at some stage however it does not mean it was uploaded by the creator. Flickr is frequently used for "washing" licenses. --Herby talk thyme 08:43, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The only way we can host this file would be if the copyright holder provides permission and free licensing via COM:OTRS. This is solely to protect the copyright holder. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:19, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Christina Scherwin picture[edit]

Thanks for your note. The picture belongs to Christina Scherwin. She asked a friend if she knew anyone who could upload a picture who asked a friend, who asked a friend, so on and so forth who asked if it was possible to upload it. What information is missing - that you need in order for the picture to be ok? thank you. MaskedSinger (talk) 18:31, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The only way we can keep this picture on here is if the copyright holder provides permission via COM:OTRS. While this may seem tedious it is simply to protect the originally copyright holder. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 18:38, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Understand completely. Will get her to take care of it. Thank you for helping me with this! MaskedSinger (talk) 18:41, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS has been sent. Do you want the ticket number? MaskedSinger (talk) 19:10, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's not necessary thanks - once the wheels are in motion it should hopefully be resolved soon. Best --Herby talk thyme 07:25, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Herbythyme: The tag says that it is missing essential source information and if not added in 7 days it will be deleted and what if it's not sorted in the time frame? I'm not sure what else is required or what else to do to avoid this from happening. The OTRS form has been submitted. The picture was taken by a trackside volunteer on her camera. What else do you require? MaskedSinger (talk) 12:00, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I just added this to Wikimedia Commons as I'd like to add it to their Wikipedia page. I have no idea what I'm meant to fill in or not fill in in order to add it correctly. I see most companies have their logo displayed in the infobox so wanted to do that as well. Would you be able to assist? Thanks. MaskedSinger (talk) 16:22, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One of those grey areas however I think this is likely to be considered a "simple text" logo and so not subject to copyright. It may be up for discussion at some stage but equally it may not. Probably don't worry --Herby talk thyme 11:18, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour,

Je l'ai versé dans common en ayant me semble-t-il suivi la procédure, et malgré cela il m'est en permanence renvoyé une alerte selon laquelle : Cette image n'a pas de source valide. Hello Herbythyme - photographs of French advertising campaigns for Leffe and Coppertone[edit]

You commented on two advertising campaigns I uploaded onto wikimedia commons and then put on two different wikipedia pages: Leffe and Coppertone (sunscreen) and Leffe (bière). What did I do wrong ?

Herbythyme I saw your reply in an automatic email "Both of these images are copyrighted I'm afraid and so cannot be hosted on Commons." but I'm not sure this is where I can exchange with you. Why aren't we in the same discussion? Anyway, what makes you think these ad campaigns have copyright??? For a start the campaign for Leffe was done singlehandlely by my father bernard moors through his advertising company "bernard moors conseil". And I have a written authorization from my father to publish these campaigns with the selected copyright status.

I just saw your message "Both of these images are copyrighted I'm afraid and so cannot be hosted on Commons. --Herby talk thyme 13:30, 8 September 2020 (UTC) We can talk wherever you like (though it would be helpful if you "sign" your posts - the editing toolbar has a button. La Monde will hold copyright on anything that they have published - almost all newspapers do I'm afraid. While your father may have been responsible for the advertising campaign it is extremely likely that the client who ordered the campaign will be the copyright owner of it and not the company which arranged the advertising. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:44, 8 September 2020 (UTC)".

I will ask my father to check with both clients that he owns the copyright. He already published both advertising campaign in different books so I am pretty sure he owns the copy right. Else it might already be in the public domain. Could you please give me a full week to revert? I will now try to sign. Regards.--Emmencyclopédie (talk) 14:36, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It would be almost certain that the commissioning clients will hold the copyright but you are welcome to try. I have removed the tags for now --Herby talk thyme 14:50, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Herby, what you are saying is NOT correct. I checked again with my father and he confirmed in writing that in France THE ADVERTISING MATERIAL BELONGS TO THE ADVERTISING AGENCY WHICH HAS THE COPYRIGHT. There is a jurisprudence in France for this. Both campaigns were done in France. The fact that he published two books which this material is evidence that he has the rights. Your threat to remove these photos is unjustified. Please stop. thank you.--Emmencyclopédie (talk) 19:30, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also I confirm as I already wrote to you that LE MONDE newspaper does not own copyright to advertisements in his newspaper. --Emmencyclopédie (talk) 19:33, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK - please let me have a link to the licensing at La Monde and I will check it.
If what you say is true then the head of the agency may confirm licensing via COM:OTRS. Obviously the email will have to come from the agency. --Herby talk thyme 07:28, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually as far as La Monde is concerned the position seems completely clear. Under the heading "PROPRIETÉ INTELLECTUELLE" on the website it is clear that there is no licensing compatible with the requirements to host images on Commons. You MUST ensure that you actually understand the licensing requirement on Commons (see COM:L) please. --Herby talk thyme 07:34, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think will be good idea to delete homeworks immediately as out of scope media. web grab?[edit]

Hi Herby,
did you tag File:Rijstvelden Myanmar 2006.jpg (2006-upload 4 MBit) consciously as "web grab"[1] or might this have been a misclick? Regards --Túrelio (talk) 13:59, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Damn - no idea how I did that. I know there was a user who had a lot of small file uploads but I can't explain that. Apologies for the extra work and thanks for catching it. --Herby talk thyme 14:02, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Weirder still - it came up on the user's uploads in VFC and yet they never touched that file as far as I can see. Again - sorry. --Herby talk thyme 14:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BMW C1 and BMW R1150R[edit]

I have sent the release to permissions-commons-de@wikimedia.org and here they can be viewed by everyone [2] and here [3]. By the way, the copyright for the photo is not with BMW, but with the photographer Arnold Debus. But he has released his photos. So what is this entry about? --SammyZimmermanns (talk) 11:56, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you have sent permission via COM:OTRS that is fine. When you get a ticket number from them it will be put on the files. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:02, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, my friend, did my page on MashriqiUser angered you. If so, I am sorry. But can you please don't deleting the whole thing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MashriqiUser (talk • contribs)

Hello! Today I posted a map of the trolleybus system of my own work. Then I received a message about the possible deletion of the file within 7 days due to a copyright issue. I don't quite understand where I can clarify the essence of the issue. I have already indicated that this is my own work (complete creation of the entire poster), I do not understand what else I have to indicate to solve the problem. Hope you can help me with a solution. Kind regards.

Ok, I understand. The official city transport operator makes absolutely poor route maps, you can check the link http://www.irkget.ru/routes/index.htm (unfortunately, their website is only in Russian). I have been making such maps for many years, and I also work in mapping and vector graphics programs, which is probably why my work looks quite professional. I can send the final CorelDraw file if necessary.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Igor Dets (talk • contribs)

Hello Herby! Unfortunately, the tag about the lack of source and authorship has not been removed. The file was deleted from the system today. Is there any way to restore it?

Hi User:Herbythyme the graphics proposed for deletion (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Pedrito14141) were co-created by members of the OpenStreetMap community to spark conversations around how we develop as a community. Hi,

You flagged File:Delegated_operators_europe_2020.png and File:Spot and Forward Markets.png as potential copyright violations. I made these images myself and thought I sourced them as 'own' but I may not have done so correctly. Is it possible to remove the deletion request? Thank you!

GLAM Competition[edit]

The author of the works has uploaded them as part of the Wikimedia GLAM Polska "Use it for yourself! Competition for a remix of free culture". The contest page explains step-by-step the process of loading files to wikimedia commons, as well as all aspects of the license. The authors of the works participate in the contest in the full knowledge that they allow the graphics to be licensed under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license. This information is also included in the contest rules available on The contest page explains step-by-step the process of loading files to wikimedia commons, as well as all aspects of the license. This information is also included in the contest rules available on Wikipedia:Poużywaj sobie!/Regulamin. The author has granted permission for a given license. Could you remove the template that was used inappropriately in this case? Celina Strzelecka (WMPL) (talk) 18:06, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It would appear that the uploader has provided licensing via COM:OTRS and so this issue appears resolved. By way of explanation artists do frequently upload files without really understanding what they are doing and that was the reason for the tagging of the files. Questions about a banned picture[edit]

Hello, I am writing to you because I have a question to ask you. One of the photos I published on Wikimedia has been deleted by you because of copyright, but in truth it is a screenshot taken by myself which I then modified myself. For me this is not an infringement of Wikimedia's internal rules. Can you therefore unblock it and if not can you quickly explain to me what I did wrong (I'm brand new to Wikipedia & Wikimedia)? Yours sincerely Prturquin035 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prturquin035 (talk • contribs) 12:51, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Prturquin035: Hi, and welcome. That appears to have been a screenshot of a game. Game developers generally have copyright of the images their games produce. Please see COM:DW and have the developer publish the images and their permission for them on their website or social media or send them via OTRS with carbon copy to you. Also, pictures aren't banned here, and please sign your posts.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:05, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

About the "Possible copyright violation"[edit]

Hi there, we're just a group of people who are trying to help out a game called Manyland get on wikipedia, the article is in its drafting state, but come to find out this afternoon that all of the images I uploaded for the article were deleted as a "possible copyright violation" can you please elaborate on why? Given 9/10 its probably a mistake on my part, this is the first time I'm doing something like this.

The following images were deleted

File:Area 9.png File:Manyland.jpg File:Manyland.png File:Manyland Mobile.jpg File:Manyland in a web browser.png File:Manyland being played on steam client.png

Do I have to get a written permission from the game creator Philipp Lenssen instead?, Originally I tried putting Phils name along with Scott Lowe, another developer and owner of the game.

Sorry about that, again, this is my first time doing this.

Thank you for also taking your time to read this. --Spiffycaius (talk) 22:14, 6 January 2021 (UTC)Spiffycaius[reply]

File:Abyssinian cat - Patricia.jpg[edit]

Hi,

Regarding this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abyssinian_cat_-_Patricia.jpg

This is the photo of my Abyssinian Cat. We did the set of professional photo several years ago on WCF exhibition and paid money for that.
Of course, the photographer left EXIF information on the files as-is. Here are several examples of the other photos we did https://i.imgur.com/zCh9o5x.jpg

So, this is my cat, my photo and I'm the only owner. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oleg Royko (talk • contribs) 19:57, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Herbythyme

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
