First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

We can talk wherever you like (though it would be helpful if you "sign" your posts - the editing toolbar has a button.
La Monde will hold copyright on anything that they have published - almost all newspapers do I'm afraid.
While your father may have been responsible for the advertising campaign it is extremely likely that the client who ordered the campaign will be the copyright owner of it and not the company which arranged the advertising. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:44, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Again, as written on your page, my father owns an advertising agency (Bernard Moors Conseil) who owns the copyright on this advertising. The copyright in France for advertising are not owned by the newspaper nor by the brand owner. They are owned by the advertising agency, which is this case bought the rights to the photographs with a private contract with the photographer. It is really annoying that you keep on challenging those rights.

New GFDL-only photographs not allowed on Commons[edit]

I notice that you recently uploaded File:Campagne publicitaire pour Coppertone en France (1973).jpg to Commons, licensing it only under the GNU Free Documentation Licence (GFDL). This file appears to be primarily a photograph, and since 2018 Commons has not allowed newly-licensed files to be uploaded with GFDL as their only free licence. Would you be willing to allow it to be used under another free licence, such as CC BY-SA 4.0? If you would, you can edit the description to add the new licence to the {{Self}} template. Dear Bjh21, Thank you for this information about the fact the GFDL cannot be the sole free licence. I discussed the matter today with my father and he agreed with your proposed suggestion to add the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence for the coppertone picture. My father also confirmed to me that he owns this advertising and that the photographer no longer has any copyright. If need be he would be happy to send a jpg of one of his books where this advertising is already reproduced.--Emmencyclopédie (talk) 15:55, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
