Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Courtauld Silver

Hey, please be careful with your categories! File:Teekanne Courtauld.jpg and File:Kaffeekanne Courtauld.jpg were made by people called Courtauld, they're not in the Courtauld museum! --Gnom (talk) 17:52, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

They are both captioned "Somerset House Museum". There isn't a museum with that exact name, but the en:Courtauld Institute of Art is in en:Somerset House. Trust me, I went to university there! No hard feelings, Ham (talk) 18:12, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

The museum in Somerset House with the Impressionists and the Courtauld silver is the Courtauld Institute of Art (or rather the gallery part of it; the university part is adjacent to it). AFAIK, the upload record & tag is not sufficient, and such images can be subject to deletion as being missing essential information. Hi there. It seemed redundant due to the existence of Category:Sculptures in London (on which I was doing a lot of work), and poorly populated in comparison with it. Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

It is very helpful to have someone more familiar with London assisting with categorization and naming conventions. Commons Categories

Hey Ham,

I'm having trouble structuring an image category and was hoping you could help. This category has lots of sub cats which is fine but the John Thomas image thumbnails insist on displaying in the main catagory, as it seems to be the parent category for the images?. I have had complaints that images of dead babies appear on the main category page, which i often promote and link to, via twitter ect. Therefore it would be great to get the John Thomas images into their 'Photographs by John Thomas' sub cat. I cannot seem to get rid of them! Byddaf yn diolchgar iawn am unrhyw gymorth. Diolch! Moving categories

Hi Ham. I see that you moved Category:Statue of George IV of the United Kingdom in Trafalgar Square to Category:Equestrian statue of George IV, Trafalgar Square, London. You did so by copy-pasting the content into a new page, which isn't good practice, as it loses the history of the category, and anyone watching the old category won't automatically watch the new category. In the future, please move the category using the "move" tab rather than copy-pasting - see Commons:Rename a category for more info. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:27, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Eight days into Wiki Loves Monuments

Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK

Thank you for submitting your photos to the competition, it really helps improve our coverage of historic sites. Photos from this year are already being used on Wikipedia - though it may take a while for the monuments map to catch up so don't be disheartened if some pins haven't turned blue yet.

WLM runs until the end of the month, so please add more and invite other people to take part. We are within touching distance of 1,000 photos for the UK, putting us just behind the United States in 14th place out of 49 countries taking part. Let's see if we can jump a few places! Community updates

Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd ^webchat
Several Commons community members are working on ways to integrate Wikidata in Wikimedia Commons. While this is not full-fledged structured data yet, this work helps to prepare for future conversion of data, and helps to understand how Wikidata and Commons can work better together.
- Thanks to Jarekt and other contributors, some Commons templates can now be filled via Wikidata: {{Creator}} (Phabricator) and {{Institution}} (Phabricator). Work is ongoing on the {{Artwork}} template (Phabricator).
- Thanks to Mike Peel and others, Wikidata-powered infoboxes can now be added to Commons categories, with the template {{Wikidata Infobox}}. (Example)
- Multichill is working on an experimental workflow to upload images to Commons via Wikidata (and using metadata from Wikidata). See a part of it here.

Community updates

Since our last newsletter, the Structured Data team has moved into designing and building prototypes for various features. The use of multilingual captions in the UploadWizard and on the file page has been researched, designed, discussed, and built out for use. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.

Things to do / input and feedback requests

A workshop on what Wikidata properties Commons will need. This workshop will be open for the entire month of July 2018 at minimum.

Discussions held

In late February there was a discussion around how Commons generally sees data being modeled.

The first discussion on copyright and licensing with Commons was held in March. This was a "high level" discussion, there will be a consultation later this summer about the deeper mapping of copyright and licensing in a structured way.
In April there was an exercise for GLAM partners in metadata and ontology mapping.
A discussion about the design for Multilingual Captions on the file page took place in May. You can still review the designs and leave feedback.
There was an IRC office hour in June to discuss progress so far and future plans.

Wikimania 2018

Three sessions about Structured Commons are officially scheduled for Wikimania 2018 - Cape Town, South Africa - July 2018.
- Wikimedia Commons and GLAM needs around the world (Friday 20 July, 10:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons and knowledge equity (Friday 20 July, 14:00 local time)
- Design challenge workshop: How can multilingual structured metadata bring knowledge equity to Commons? (Friday 20 July, 14:30 local time)
Structured Data on Commons is also a focus area during the Wikimania 2018 Hackathon. We will, among other things, do 'live' modelling of Wikidata properties for Commons - an offline spin-off of the community consultation taking place on wiki.

Structured Data on Commons was presented to GLAM audiences during EuropeanaTech 2018 in Rotterdam (15 May 2018) and at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek Forum in Berlin (4 June 2018).

Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.

Duplicates

Flickr2Commons does not properly check for duplicates because the maintainer.. I don't have a friggin clue, but the maintainer hasn't fixed it even though it was reported months ago. Category:John Prichard and Category:John Pollard Seddon

Hi, I notice that you have been adding buildings to Category:John Prichard and Category:John Pollard Seddon. I suspect that some of these were the work of the architectural practice Prichard & Seddon, and we may not be able to establish the individual architect responsible. Some of their architectural plans are signed "Prichard & Seddon, Diocesan Architects, Llandaff (see File:St David's Church, Llanddewi Rhydderch architectural plan.png and File:St Mary's Church Aberavon architectural plan.png). I suggest that we move these to a new Category:Prichard & Seddon, unless there is evidence of individual responsibility. There should probably be a Wikipedia article on the practice, and most of the buildings listed in w:en:John Prichard should be moved there. Any comments? @Verbcatcher: I absolutely agree that there should be a Prichard & Seddon category and Wikipedia article. I categorised File:St David's Church, Llanddewi Rhydderch architectural plan.png based on the inscription "Pritchard & Seddon", although en:St David's Church, Llanddewi Rhydderch ascribes that church specifically to Seddon, and I didn't know about File:St Mary's Church Aberavon architectural plan.png. Presentations / Press / Events

Presentation by Keegan on the first features to be released for Structured Data, presented at Wikiconference North America, Columbus, Ohio, October 2018.
Sandra presented a project update at the GLAM-Wiki conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, November 2018, as part of an update and panel discussion.
Structured Data on Commons was the subject of a keynote presentation by Sandra (see slides) at the Baltic Audiovisual Archives Council conference in Tallinn, Estonia, November 2018.

Partners and allies

The info portal on Structured Commons now includes a section on GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums).
We are currently planning the first GLAM pilot projects that will use structured data on Wikimedia Commons. One project has already started: the Swedish Heritage Board researches and develops a prototype tool to provide improved metadata (translations, data additions...) from Wikimedia Commons back to the source institution. Read the project brief.
The documentation for batch uploads of files to Wikimedia Commons will be improved in 2019, as part of preparing for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. To prepare, the GLAM team at the Wikimedia Foundation wants to understand better which types of documentation you already use, and how you like to learn new GLAM-Wiki skills and knowledge. Fill in a short survey to provide input!

Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

My apologies if this is a duplicate message for you, it is being sent to multiple lists which you may be signed up for.

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Structured Data - blogs posted in Wikimedia Space

There are two separate blog entries for Structured Data on Commons posted to Wikimedia Space that are of interest:

Working with Structured Data on Commons: A Status Report, by Lucas Werkmeister, discusses some ways that editors can work with structured data. Topics include tools that have been written or modified for structured data, in addition to future plans for tools and querying services.
Structured Data on Commons - A Blog Series, written by me, is a five-part posting that covers the basics of the software and features that were built to make structured data happen. The series is meant to be friendly to those who may have some knowledge of Commons, but may not know much about the structured data project.

Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.

Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).

We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.

The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.

Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.

@Lotje: Yes, of course. The description is not my own and was taken directly from Flickr; I had never seen it before. The file is one of very many by that user which I uploaded en masse – too many to check all the descriptions, but perhaps I will now need to do that. Thank you for drawing my attention to this. I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
