Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Dear Giorgio, I'm sorry for my late reply because I don't open Commons regularly. However, I want to ask you if this diploma or award or whatever is written in Arabic? Because of the font, I couldn't recognize whether it is Arabic or Persian (Both use same characters). The only thing I could extract from this image is two words "الرتبة الثانية" which can be translated into "Second Degree" or "Second Class" (Arabic and Persian have some common words as I think). Immagini della serie Araldiz Manno

Ho visto che sei intervenuto su alcune immagini che erano state, erroneamente, segnalate come non categorizzate e hai introdotto la categoria heraldry (peraltro corretta, almeno come prima attribuzione). In realtà tutte quelle immagini (sono circa 400) sono corredate del template PD-DAUI che, oltre a inserire la segnalazione di pubblico dominio attribuisce anche la categoria Dizionario Araldico Ufficiale Italiano, che è quella corretta e che rientra, a sua volta, in quella dei dizionari araldici. Forse sarebbe necessario far presente all'autore del bot che introduce la segnalazione di mancanza di categoria che deve correggerlo in modo tale che, oltre a verificare la mancanza di categoria espressa dalle doppie quadre, vada anche a verificare i vari template presenti nella pagina per controllare se qualche template introduce una categoria, altrimenti saremo sempre tutti costretti a correre dietro al suo bot per eliminare la segnalazione errata ed essendo costretti, per l'inefficienza del bot, a introdurre categorie espresse con doppie quadre, anche se, come nel caso del tuo, peraltro utile, intervento, troppo generiche e comunque inutili. Io non sono capace di esprimere il concetto in inglese corretto e quindi ti pregherei di valutare l'opportunità di fare tu la segnalazione. Grazie ancora per l'intervento. Giorgio, the image is now restored. But, look, when you uploaded the painting, you uploaded this. There's no way of knowing, by just reading the information you gave that the author of the pictures is not Frank Fox and he's only the author of the text of the book. By reading your {{Information}} tag, appears to be that Frank Fox is the author of that painting, and {{PD-old}} does not apply because the supposed author died in 1960. That's because I've deleted the file. The painting in this case is anonymous, and therefore, {{Anonymous-EU}} applies. "Unused since January" implies that it was in use before that. I'd probably say, "Never used", or, if I wanted to be very complete, "Uploaded in January, never used". Since you are on my mental list of "reasonable people", I would accept "never used" without looking at the image.
