Copyright help regarding File:10dinara.jpg

I need help regarding the licensing because on the original site Wikipedia, it states it is under public domain by Serbian law. But there is no option for that in the upload section (not the upload wizard). --PhoenixStarlight (talk) 04:15, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

Is there a way to upload from a direct link. tif files.

For example, I have a direct link to a photo in a server and I want to upload it directly to Wikimedia commons without having to download it to my computer. Is there a way to do that?. Copyright help regarding File:Alinur Aktaş.jpg

I cannot access the source page because my anti-malware app is blocking that page. Generally though, we cannot keep any recent images without a free licence. If there is no Creative Commons or other such licence at the website where you found the image, it will have to be deleted. De728631 (talk) 18:57, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Uploading a New Version of a File & Changing License

Hello. I am new on Commons and I have yet to fully understand all the policies regarding licensing. I would like to upload a slightly larger version of the File:Henri IV king.jpg I found online. Since this is a centuries-old painting, is my understanding correct that an image consisting solely of this painting is not a derivative work and thus would in in public domain no matter what? Ganeswaran Thivyasagar you need to click Upload File in the sidebar, or go to Special:UploadWizard. Please ensure that you are the copyright holder for all the pictures, or that the copyright holder has explicitly released the image under a free licence (that it is available on the internet is not sufficient for this purpose). -mattbuck (Talk) 08:27, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
@Mattbuck: I don't think User:Ganeswaran Thivyasagar was asking how to upload, I believe the question was how to see the uploaded pictures. Ganeswaran, if you are trying to see your own uploaded pictures, those are at Special:ListFiles/Ganeswaran_Thivyasagar, though I don't see anything indicating that they were involved in a competition. If you wanted to see, for example, photos entered into Wiki Loves Monuments competitions, you could start at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments and navigate from there. If you had something else more specific in mind, and you cannot work it out from this, you'll need to reword your question. - Jmabel ! talk 16:18, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Abhi009kk; Your account hasn't made any uploads? Looking at your deletion requests, they are unlikely to be done. We aren't short of space, and there is no problem having multiple images of the same subject. However, one of the images you are attempting to delete appears to be a copyright violation, so may be removed anyway. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 11:09, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Graphs

I am wanting to make a simple graph using regular graph lines like what you would see on graph paper, but do not know how to create using Windows Word 10, and am trying to download a graph page that I can then type on to make my document.   • Windows Word 10 sounds to me like a very poor tool for this. I've never used it, so I can't give you any concrete advice other than that you probably should use a tool that is normally used to make graphs rather that a general word processor. - Jmabel ! talk 16:59, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

photo processed to look like a line drawing

Please see Special:Contributions/Rikushi44-2. There are pictures that have been processed to look like line drawings (like File:昭和天皇臨席の御前会議 02.jpg and File:朝枝繁春.png) and images that are just text added to another photo (like File:Gozenkaigi shimomura.jpg). Is such an image acceptable in the Wikimedia Commons? （And strangely enough, S/HE claims these 75+ year old photos, taken in the military or in a place where only heads of government can enter, are his own work.）--Naminsk (talk) 02:44, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

  • These are certainly a problem. Low-res, no sources cited; as you note, weird post-processing. @Rikushi44-2: , care to explain what is going on here?
  • If the underlying images are public domain and the modifications are Rikushi44-2's then these would be OK on a copyright level but under COM:SCOPE why would we want the reprocessed images rather than the most accurate and highest resolution forms of the originals that we could get? - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

How to download GeoJSON .map

When I go to a GeoJSON Map such as https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data:Switzerland.map I only get the fully wrapped HTML page. How can I do a web request to only get the JSON, not the HTML?

George Jones Wikipedia page: No photos of Jones

On the George Jones Wikipedia page, there are 3 photos total: Of Hank Williams, of Tammy Wynette, and of George Jones's grave. Not a single picture of George Jones himself in various phases of his career. As an experiment, I tried to add a childhood photo of Jones from the 1940s (found on the Internet). Was given the message that since I did not own the photo or take it, I was not allowed to post it.

This lack of photos for the Jones page is obviously not the case for most celebrity listings on Wikipedia. How to add representative photos of George Jones to his Wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Judehardy95 (talk • contribs) 04:29, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Judehardy95 There are only very few circumstances where non free images can be used. If there was no picture at all of him, and he was dead, we could use a non free picture, but because we already have File:George JonesCFF.JPG, we can't. We can only use non free images when there is no free alternative. New version of an image not accessible?

Hello. I am new to Commons. I uploaded a new version with much higher resolution of File:Alexandre Benoit Jean Dufay, Casanova (Paris 1770-1844), Portrait of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.jpg. However, after I have overwritten the file, I couldn't access my new version. It shows up as the new preview. But when I click on the image itself and the "Original file" link below to view it at full resolution, it still links to the oldest much smaller version with different lighting. After experimenting by uploading a slightly different uncropped version and then reverting to the version I want, I find out that my new file successfully uploaded as could be seen here. Is there some sort of time lag between when I uploaded a new version and when it actually shows up as the original file at full resolution? Or is there something wrong with the overwriting process? Are you implying that this issue is not rare on Commons? or is it just my browser and you are not experiencing the same issue? Also, on my contribution page, the edits in which I overwrote this file do not have the "Tag: Overwriting artwork" unlike the previous three times I overwrote other files. @Alsakan: The caching problems are common. There is one involving sync'ing Commons' servers (which you can usually solve with a null edit to the text of the page) but actually the more common one is strictly client-side, your browser caching the old File page.
On your separate question, no idea, though.
Also: you might want to sort out the licensing template on that page, which is just {{PD-Art}} with no indication of why the art is PD. - Jmabel ! talk 02:00, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

File:Qristine Tsintsadze.jpg

This is hopefully a very simple fix, but I am unsure how to do it and don't want to screw anything up. Trying to figure out what US tag to place on the photograph, I learned that it was actually taken in the US. To show that, I uploaded the back side of the photograph from the The National Parliamentary Library of Georgia where 1907 is clearly visible and which contains the statement: "Description: ფოტო გადაღებულია ამერიკაში ქ. ჩიკაგოში" (Photo taken in America. In Chicago) and clearly shows no copyright information. My question is now that the back side is uploaded, how do I get it to return to the original image, while keeping the back side as a thumbnail? @SusunW: You can simply revert the image to the correct version by clicking the "revert" link next to the old image in the "File History" section. You may want to upload the image of the back as its own separate file, instead of just burying it in the image history, so it's easier for people to refer to it in the future. If you do that, link the images to each other by adding links in the "other versions" section. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:22, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

And in this scenario, I'd put the links as part of the "description" sections, not in "other version". You might even use a <gallery> as part of the description. Jmabel Thanks for your help, though I fear your instructions are far above my skill level. I saw that revert, I was just afraid that would remove the backside image. I am glad to add the material to the descriptions, as I often am on commons simply to clarify copyright information, but how to make it a separate file and then link the two is not something I know how to do. SusunW If you go into edit mode on the example I linked, it will probably actually be pretty obvious. I know that when I learned to use "gallery" I worked out enough to do this sort of thing in a matter of minutes. Jmabel Thank you for your patience with me. I do appreciate the help, but looking at that page, I have no clue what to do. Technology on wp is not intuitive for me. I have zero idea how to do most coding things and find uploading files difficult. I am a writer and a researcher as such, to use photographs, I often end up researching the publishing history and add it to commons files correcting the licensing information. @SusunW: Galleries are pretty simple - you just need to put the name of the other file between <gallery> and </gallery>. I took care of it for you in this case, so you can look at what I did. Opinion on Spanish photo from 1968

The photo which appears at the top of the article link here was taken in Spain in 1968 or January 1969 at the latest (since the person at the centre of the photo was murdered in January 1969). I'm not 100% certain (erring on the side of caution) that the following templates {{PD-Spain-photo}}{{PD-1996}} are sufficient to demonstrate satisfactory public domain usage, otherwise I am assuming the public domain usage cannot be satisfied? Improving quality of existing image

I have found an article with a logo on it that isn’t exactly the best quality... Now it’s a fairly simple logo, so I’ve recreated it in vector imaging software for fun. Now I have created the exact same logo, only its quality is much better than the existing image on the Wikipedia page. Am I allowed to upload that new image and replace the old logo with a much better quality version of it? If so, what is the best way to do this? --Afwasmiddel (talk) 23:52, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

@GogouAnastasia: If the logo is very simple, you can upload it here at Commons with a {{PD-textlogo}} licence: . If it is rather complex, however, we would need a permission by email coming directly from the copyright holder. Magazine cover photo from 1907 - is it now public domain?

Hi all, thanks in advance for your time with this question!

I could do it low res for fair use since the subject Lady Beatrix Stanley is long dead however I am wondering if the image could now be considered as in the public domain? The photo itself is ascribed to Speaight, New Bond Street, who I believe to be Richard N. Speaight. He died in 1938 (https://rkd.nl/nl/explore/artists/392715) and hence his work is now in the public domain as of 2008, and a number of photos by the artist are now available on Wikimedia Commons. However I don't know if this applies to a photo which may have been commissioned, as could be they case here. The editor at the time, Peter Anderson Graham I believe, passed away in 1925: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:Peter_Anderson_Graham . Problem uploading File:The practical designer - Lesson No 82.png

Yesterday I uploaded a file with the incorrect file name and requested a rename, which was promptly done thanks. File:The practical designer - Lesson No 82.png to File:The practical designer - Lesson No 80.png

Today I have attempted to upload the correct file for The practical designer - Lesson No 82.png but it is reporting that the file already exists.

I think I have had a similar issue recently which I reported here and it was resolved. I think it is some kind of caching issue however I cannot recall the details or find my post.

Could someone take a look and resolve the issue for me please?

As an aside, is there a reason I cannot delete or rename a file I upload myself? I seem to be causing extra work for people by my own carelessness?

  • @Sp1nd01: What tool were you using for the upload? Was this an absolute no-way-past stoppage or a warning you could override?
  • You can definitely get around this with Special:Upload, but that won't walk you through creating the page content. If you copy-paste from something similar and then edit it, it's pretty straightforward. - Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I always use the Upload Wizard, and the message does say I can overwrite the image, but I don't want to do this as that would also affect the previous page in the book.

In fact I think I've just spotted the problem I have seen before, and it is possibly the issue here. When I look at the new file that was renamed, File:The practical designer - Lesson No 80.png under file usage on Commons it shows it has a usage redirect to File:The practical designer - Lesson No 82.png (file redirect).   • @Sp1nd01: When you go to a redirect page, it takes you to the target of the redirect, which displays normally except that there is a small link just under the title header, telling you where it was redirected from. If you click on that, it brings you to the redirect page itself, which you can edit in the normal manner, including a request for deletion (or changing where it redirects).
  • For example, click this link: File:Regrade activities, location unknown, ca 1907 (SEATTLE 671).jpg. See the "Redirected from" link just under the title header? Click it.

Davey2010: They are part of structured data, but aren't captions. They are a bit more potentially useful than captions, having uses in improving search functionality. See Commons:Depicts.
Enabling or disabling captions and all of structured data is in Preferences -> Gadgets, under Interface: Files and categories.
Phabricator T174349 would help here to hide them from watchlists. My edits are mostly done via Help:Gadget-ACDC, which does tag its edits. But for whatever reason you can't invert a tag to hide tool use. You would have thought a filter to hide all structured data stuff would exist, but I can't seem to find one. Photo of Johannes Carl Andersen

Hi, I would like to use the image of Johannes Carl Andersen from New Zealand natlib.govt.nz. The image can be found via this link: https://natlib.govt.nz/records/23130148?search%5Bpath%5D=photos&search%5Btext%5D=Johannes+Carl+Andersen On their website is written, that the image is partly restricted and they suggests to use surrogate in place of original. Below at the end of the page they let us know that the copyright is unknown and on top is written that the photo was taken in September 1928.

My question is: can I use this photo according to the New Zealand copyright act. I guess I can, but was unsure about the information on this website of the photo. Can someone give me an advice? Thanks in advance. -- Ulanwp (talk) 14:55, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

The photo is attributed to S P Andrew Ltd. and dated c. 1928. The original photographer is not known though, which makes this some kind of pseudonymous but not really anonymous since the company is credited. To be out of copyright, the original photographer would have to have died before 1970, but there is a chance that he did live longer. Hm. It's anonymous unless a human author is identified -- it would only if the company name left it unambiguous as to who the human author was for the work to get the non-anonymous terms. I have no idea if that was a one-man studio or if there were several employees. Stanley Polkinghorne Andrew lived from 1878 to 1964, apparently. Started the business in 1928, his son joined him in 1938, and took over completely in 1958. I think it's PD in New Zealand any way you look at it; the question is if it was under copyright in New Zealand in 1996, which its U.S. status depends on. If anonymous, it expired in 1979, and was not restored in the U.S. If it was considered under copyright by 50pma though, it would be different, and U.S. copyright would not expire until 2024. Under earlier NZ law, photographs expired 50 years after creation. So it became PD there in 1979. The question is if it was revived by the 1994 law. I tend to think not -- it says Copyright exists under the new copyright provisions in any work in which copyright existed immediately before commencement. It does not say what happens to works which had expired, so it looks like that was a non-retroactive change, and we may be missing that fact in the templates. New Zealand photos created before 1944 should be in the public domain in both New Zealand and the U.S. (provided they didn't register the U.S. copyright and renew it, etc.) It would therefore appear that the photo is fine, having expired in 1979 and not changed since. It would seem as though the anonymous distinction is moot due to the older terms being based on year of creation only. Carl Lindberg (talk) 17:49, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

How do I upload a SVG file to replace a PNG file?

@Firestar464: The filename on Commons needs to agree with the format, so you can't upload an SVG file with a name that ends ".png". You need to upload the file under a new name. Then you can update pages that use the old file to refer to the new one instead. You should probably use {{Derived from}} on the new file if you've based it on the old one, and {{Vector version available}} on the old file to indicate that a new one is available. --bjh21 (talk) 13:00, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Can we upload images from google if the usage rights are: Labeled for reuse with modification?

I want to contribute to Wikimedia commons, but I don't know if certain images from Google can be added to Wikimedia. For example, I use the advanced search feature which lets me find images that are labeled for commercial reuse with modification. @HypatiaOfAlexandria2020: I take it this is two different issues: your own CEO and a client?
Who owns the copyrights, in each case? As a PR firm, I'm sure you understand that copyright would inherently belong to the photographer, and any transfer of copyright would have to be explicit. (If the answers are different for different photos, please indicate the scenarios you are working with, if you want concrete answers.)
In general, for photos like this that have presumably already been published somewhere, there are two routes. Both require that you offer a free license that includes the right to make derivatives and that does not put copyright-based limitations on commercial use. The two routes are:
  1. The holder of the copyright can indicate the license on a site clearly under their control, and the uploader (or whoever) can cite that as the source of the photo.
    • "a site clearly under their control": e.g. the photographer's company page, Flickr page, etc.
  2. The holder of the copyright can go through the process described at COM:OTRS. By this process they can either indicate particular photos to be free-licensed, or they can designate a particular Wikimedia user (you, for example) who may be trusted to upload their work on their behalf.

Yes, you can use the same image. It is hosted here at Commons and can be used by anyone and anywhere. At the French Wikipedia article Blanco White you may choose to "modifier le code" and then add the file name Blanco White am Haldern Pop Festival 2019 - 04 - Foto Alexander Kellner.jpg where it says |image=. Basically, they want to encourage people to get images that can be gotten, and pictures of living people generally fall under that heading. They figure if non-free images were allowed on Wikipedia, there would be a lot less incentive to create free ones. How to upload an image a company has released with a Creative Common license

I'm talking to a company which has tentatively agreed to release a couple of their copyrighted images for use on Wikimedia Commons (with a Wikipedia article as an eventual destination). They just asked what the process is first. I see that I can "upload someone else's work if the author granted permission for anyone to use, copy, modify, and sell it." Assuming I will have the company's permission by email to upload their copyrighted images with one of the Creative Commons licenses, what's the next step to actually get the images uploaded?   1. They can clearly indicate the license on their own site; you can cite that as the source.
  2. They can send an email to OTRS indicating that a particular account (possibly one for one of their own employees) will be uploading on their behalf, and that account can specify licenses when uploading.
  3. They can send an email to OTRS indicating specific licenses for specific photos.

Unable to do revert

TIME SENSITIVE: Credit line question

I am helping to produce the publication for a book and will be using these two images (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sigmund_Freud_LIFE.jpg, and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ornette-coleman_06N7116sw.jpg) but I need clarification about how to properly credit these images.

We are on a time sensitive deadline to complete the cover and are hoping for feedback about the below today (Thursday May 7, 2020), if possible.

There will be limited space available on the book cover for the credit line but I do want to make sure it is done properly.

Can you please let me know:

1. Can you please confirm that this image of "Sigmund Freud LIFE.jpg" does, in fact, require a credit line?

2. How should the credit line read exactly, for use of this image on a published book cover with global usage?

3. If the image is cropped and/or modified, how does this change the credit line? How should the credit line read in this case?

I am not a lawyer, but
1, 2, 4. File:Sigmund Freud LIFE.jpg doesn't legally require anything, since it is in the public domain, but intellectual honesty would mean that you credit it as a photo by Max Halberstadt that originally appeared in Life magazine.
3. You would add "cropped" or "cropped from".
File:Ornette-coleman 06N7116sw.jpg is an entirely different matter. You need to conform to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en and you need to credit "Nomo michael hoefner http://www.zwo5.de". By longstanding tradition, photo credits for a book cover can go on the same page as the book's own copyright. (If you want to make a different arrangement, User:Nomo remains active here.)
Speaking only for myself, regardless of license, if you are using a photographer's photo on the cover of a published book, it would be a nice gesture to offer at least a nominal payment even if a free license is available that does not require you to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

@MikeRun: I think the major problem is where you have }} in the code in a couple of places, since that looks to the parser like the end of a template. I think the simplest (though maybe not cleanest) way to solve this is just to put a space between the two closing brace characters. --bjh21 (talk) 16:01, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
MikeRun, I first wanted to suggest putting the source into syntaxhighlight tags (cf. mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight), but then I noticed that you use {{Created with code}} template – if you look into the doc you will find the solution: Replace}} with {{))}}. The appareance will nethertheless look odd, though, according to tests with your code (the “and with Inkscape” part), but that’s not your fault. And: You do not need to add the source code into the infobox.

Has this photographer been dead for 70+ years or not?

So there is this German photographer named Ernst Sandau who lived around a century ago and I would like to know if he has been dead for more than 70 years or not since it would have implications on whether or not the photos he took in Germany could be uploaded to Commons. Apparently the Ernst Sandau page claims he died relatively young in 1918, but other sources claim he was still alive long after that into the 1960s.     • @Alsakan and Jmabel: We can easily discuss this topic here since there are no direct copyright questions. The question is rather the lifetime of Mr. Sandau. We used to have a file File:Tsar Nicholas II & King George V.JPG at Commons which was a photograph made by Sandau. It was deleted because at the time it was also present at the English Wikipedia under a fair use rationale. The main rationale over there was that the photographer Ernst Sandau was still alive in 1960. Unfortunately the links for this claim are broken and have not been archived. The German Wikipedia article Ernst Sandau, however, has a source for Sandau having died already in 1918. Arguably, a web search comes up with some post-1918 portraits credited to Ernst Sandau, but it appears that this was rather his former studio that continued to use his name, but not Sandau himself. I have taken couple pictures of buildings in EU Region. (Finland) Am I allowed to upload them to Wikimedia Commons under Freedom of Panorama? And Is it considered my work?

Question about my behavior

Hi,

Can I be blocked for making good faith mistakes? I was threatened twice yesterday with being blocked for vandalism by an admin because they thought I intentionally made four or five over categorizing mistakes in the Sri Lanka cat. I do occasionally make mistakes but never intentionally. They also accused me of turning off my ping, because I didn't reply for an hour as I was looking up information on Wikipedia and didn't see that I had a post on my talk page here. I am fearful now. Is this normal, or am I overreacting? Is there anything I should do besides continuing to try hard to do the right thing? Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 21:58, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

  • If the question is "Is it possible for someone to misconstrue my intent and block me inappropriately," obviously that could happen to anyone, and there is no general way to prevent it. Just like you, admins sometimes make mistakes.
  • If the question is "Can I be blocked if my intentions are clearly good," the answer is that it's unlikely to happen, but could happen. If, for example, someone repeatedly, with good intentions, writes near-nonsense captions in a language they barely know and where they are overconfident of their ability, and they ignore warnings to stop, they could be blocked regardless of their obviously good intentions. If someone is certain Commons would be better off with no pictures of of nudity -- or of cats, or of buildings -- and they keep nominating them for deletion despite losing every time, although their intention is to improve Commons they will probably end up blocked.
  • If the question was something else, like "what exactly happened in the particular incident that just happened to me," you might best solve it via discussion with the particular admin involved. - Jmabel ! talk 23:29, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Copyright law pre-Philippine Independence

Hello. I scanned a photo that is in my family and uploaded it to Wikimedia. I got a notice saying that it is a derivative work and that it may be deleted. The person notifying me appears to be Russian and I can't communicate the intricacies of this in their language. I am being cautioned to not upload any more files and I just got this notice after spending quite a bit of time uploading files of my own creation into the public domain. This is the only work I have posted created by another.

This photo was created by the Lenor Art Studio in Luzon in the Philippines on March 12, 1946. It is clearly stated at the bottom of the photo. This was a three months before the Philippines gained sovereignty from the U.S. I am unable to determine what copyright law of which country applies or if a territory/principality of the U.S. has the same copyright laws as the United States itself. I cannot determine that the art studio exists. Current Philippine law protects the copyright holder for fifty years beyond their death, however, I cannot determine who the photographer was or whether current copyright law extends retroactively to before independence was granted at which time their own laws would come into being. Does the studio own the copyright or the employee of the studio? If we can tell. It was routine for studios to photograph Navy crews like this. Adding Images for a Company

@InternetReputation:
  1. Your user page should probably indicate that company affiliation.
  2. Please make sure that the account is only operated by you, not by your co-workers. It's fine (on Commons) that you are doing this on behalf of a company, but you are operating the account as an individual.
  3. You might do better to take a different account name that is not the name of the company, something more like myname (InternetReputation) rather than just InternetReputation.
  4. It will be simplest if your company indicates the relevant license (e.g. CC-BY-SA 4.0) on what is clearly its own site; then you (or anyone) can upload here, indicating that as a source, since the license will be clearly indicated at the source.
  5. If that last is not viable, then things need to go through the COM:OTRS process, since you personally are not the copyright holder. The simplest way to do that would be for someone at the company, with an email address at the company's domain, to send email to the address specified on the OTRS page, indicating that you will be uploading on their behalf, and either authorizing you to upload a certain well-defined body of material or to upload on their behalf in general. This will probably lead to a bit of correspondence, but it should be sorted out pretty quickly.

Advice on speedy deletion of file with unclear sourcing

Hi. I just added an automatic tag to File:Rising Flame.jpg to indicate that the source needs to be identified more clearly. However, I hadn't realised the tag was also a speedy deletion tag. As the uploader has claimed "own work" in this case and it is theoretically possible that they did take the photo 54 years ago, would it be better to cancel the speedy deletion and open a deletion discussion instead? It is actually not a speedy deletion tag since deletion with this type of problem tags is delayed for seven days. The claim of own work is in fact dubious, so I would let the tag sit there. Couirec, apparently, Louis Boyer died in 1999. I am not sure about this, but if we assume the photographs are above threshold, you cannot upload these. The enwiki article, though, has two images embedded: Sydney ‘Star Camera’ at Red Hill Observatory, 1892.jpg and Catalogue photographique du Ciel I-VIII.JPG. Image requires attibution, but doesn't have a CC license

Hi there! There is an image of an 1861 illustration that I would like to upload, but I am wondering if the copyright allows it to be uploaded to Wiki Commons.

I got the photo from the State Library of South Australia website. Under their Conditions of Use (since the item has no known copyright restrictions because the creator died in 1866), it should be allowed to be used freely for any purpose without permission, as long as there is "Acknowledgment of the State Library" (including the phrase "State Library of South Australia" - followed by the Library's unique identifying number.) along with its use.

Can I upload this photo? And if so (using the Upload Wizard): What should I put for the license (since it's not specifically Creative Commons), who should I put for the "Author" (the artist or the library?), and where should I put the acknowledgment phrase for the State Library?   • This would be entirely a non-copyright restriction about the conditions of use of their website, no? @Whisperjanes: You can upload it. The status tags can be PD-Australia and PD-US-expired. The artist is the author. The library is the source. Formatting the source with the link, the library name and the number is usual anyway, so you will in fact respect the acknowledgement. Photoshopped picture

This picture looks like it's not really a photograph of a glass of water mixed with mint-flavoured syrup. Instead it's a Photoshopped version of a photograph of a glass of ice tea (the original picture can be seen on the file description page). So it's depicting something that doesn't actually exist. Image Copyright

Hi There,

I recently uploaded the image - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Healthcare_Professional_looking_at_monitor._.jpg

I purchased this image from the stock images website www.123rf.com and under it's license agreement (Found here - https://www.123rf.com/license.php?type=standard), which allows for upload of the image to 'websites or blogs'. The image was found by an editor on another website, who I would assume purchased the image and used it in the same way I have.

As a result of this image being flagged, I was notified that my other entries were also going to be deleted. Could someone please point me in the right direction? Should I delete the image and re-upload it under commons? Should I edit the information of the image to detail the license agreement? Should I contact someone specifically?

On a personal note, I have to say that my experience of Wikipedia as a 'contributor' so far has been terrifying - the formality and legal tone of the language directed at beginners from admins and senior users is anxiety enducing. I loved adding to this article yesterday and I feel it really needed a boost but I will be seriously considering my role as part of the community after seeing the emails and notfications I woke up to today. The messages you wish to convey to new users could be achieved with a more supportive and understanding tone - people make mistakes. Savagecoverman, you would need the copyright holder to send permission, prefrably using a template at Commons:Email templates. Copyright help regarding File:Series P Data Page.jpg

I sourced the above image, as well as Series P Data and Observation Pages.jpg and Canadian_Biometric_Passport_Data_Page.jpg ‎to replace similar images which are being deleted for inadvertent copyright violations. I believe them to be freely and fairly in the public domain, with their sharing not prohibited. Under which copyright category do I list them under to avoid them being deleted?

  • The pictures are works of the Australian and Canadian governments. Such works are typically copyrighted and thus can't be uploaded here until 50 years after they were first published. These ones are obviously not yet 50 years old. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:51, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

I would like to put a photo of a famous person on Wikipedia who has passed away. This photo was published by dozens of newspapers(maybe more), in the US and the world, when he died. So I am thinking the photo is a stock photo.   • @Dodedit: You are asking this on Wikimedia Commons, not on Wikipedia. If you are actually asking about one of the language-specific Wikipedias, you'd have to ask there. Each has its own policy, and some do not allow image uploads at all.
  • If you are asking about Commons, there are going to be a few issues:
    1. Is the logo so old that it is out of copyright (1924 or earlier for the U.S. as {{PD-US-expired}}; a bit trickier for other countries, but anything before 1900 should be OK as {{PD-old-assumed}}).
    2. Is the logo out of copyright for some other country-specific reason?
    3. Otherwise, given that the logo is still copyrighted, has the copyright-holder offered a sufficiently free license?
Commons can host it only if one of these answers is yes.

If these are your images then you can release them freely but, if you are talking about File:Sound of nature.jpg and File:Waves stole my heart.jpg you should upload them without the watermark, which is discouraged. Some other editors will likely retouch out the watermark if they want to use them in an article and it would be better to have the original unwatermarked version. So long as the images are in a format we accept, such as jpg, gif, png, tiff, there are not "authorised software" for editing. Ww2censor (talk) 14:24, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

@PedroLuzFotografia and Pedro Luz Fotografia: Sorry, this is not possible. You uploaded these images with Creative Commons licences, which are irrevocable. We would courtesy delete images within a week of uploading at the author's request but 2017 is just too long ago for this. Uploading a photo into an infobox

I have posted my first article about an artist, and I have a Wikimedia Commons portrait of her to upload into the article's accompanying info box (the box with the date and place of birth, academic degrees, etc.). The portrait is now attached to my article and ready to upload through the insert image function, but I can't figure out how to do this. When I open the info box in edit mode, I can't find a button to click or a field to open that would insert the image into the box instead of into the article. I would appreciate some help with this.

Deletion of files

I've put this into the Copyright Village Pump, but I believe this needs extra help.

Some freely-licensed Blender Foundation posters have been tagged for deletion, even though the licenses were reviewed positively. These shouldn't be deleted or cropped because Blender themselves chose to license these posters freely, even with logos in them. These include File:CosmosLaundromatPoster.jpg, File:Spring2019PillarPosterBlender.jpg, File:Spring2019AlphaPosterBlender.jpg, & File:ElephantsDreamPoster.jpg. File:CosmosLaundromatYouTubeThumbnail.jpg was lumped into this, but it doesn't even have Blender logos. Like I said, the licenses were reviewed on these.

I uploaded a derivative of File:Eraserhead.jpg to just have Jack Nance (File:Jack Nance Eraserhead.jpeg). I did not upload the original poster here. But, the poster's tag says since it was published in the United States between 1925 and 1977 without a copyright notice, it's Public Domain. This PD tag appears to be correct to me. The poster (also the uncropped version) does not have a copyright notice on it, and it was published in 1977. Because of that, this is probably a false flag too.

The most complicated however is a screenshot from File:Dr. Strangelove (1964) - Trailer.webm, which is File:Stanley Kubrick in Dr. Strangelove Trailer (4).jpg (along with a cropped version of this, which I uploaded a new version of, File:Stanley Kubrick in Dr. Strangelove Trailer (4) Cropped.jpg). The trailer is PD because of the same reason as the Eraserhead poster: it was published in the US between 1925 and 1977 without a copyright notice. I believe this was published for American theaters by Columbia Pictures. I'm honestly not too sure on this one.

The way I see it, on the Blender-related posters, a couple of cases could be made:
1. We could use the template for De minimis ("Of little importance; insignificant.") on them. The logos are only small additions, and the posters do not put the focus on them. In fact, it's used in File:Sintel poster.jpg as well (and probably more).
2. The logos can be considered simple geometric shapes and text and not meet the threshold of originality, which would make it Public Domain. In fact, the Blender logo is uploaded to Commons here under those terms with a TM tag as well (File:Logo Blender.svg).
That being said, there's still the fact that the posters were published with logos on them officially by Blender to be used freely under the terms of CC-BY. Again, Blender CHOSE to put the logos on AND release them free to use. StrangeloveFan101 (talk) 13:24, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Upload an existing file?

I would like to replace an existing file (FileB.svg) by uploading a different file (FileA.svg) to the same name. FileA.svg is already hosted on Wikimedia Commons and has a compatible license, but not the identical license to FileB.svg; different creator, etc. How can I easily replace FileB.svg and ensure that the license information is correctly updated to reflect FileA.svg? @Elizium23: This is not allowed by Commons:Overwriting files. In most cases, you should just update uses of the file to use the new one instead. If there's some reason why that's not possible (for instance, the name "FileA" is constructed by a template), then I think the best thing is to rename FileA.svg to a new name, and then update the resulting redirect to point at FileB. That way when FileC comes along in future, you can change the redirect again. There are some cases where redirects don't work, but this should be good enough for uses on Wikimedia projects. --bjh21 (talk) 13:16, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

It was only used on frwiki. An IP editor kept warring with me there to replace it. So I have swapped in a generic template in lieu of the real thing. Crisis averted for now. How do you tag a speedy delete of your own upload of a noncommercial CC misattribution?

I discovered that one of my old sourced uploads that was cited with a free commercial CC license was misattributed and that the actual license of the image is a noncommercial CC license. I tried to delete the upload as quickly as possible but in the panic, I added a speedy deletion request and then modified it to reason as a copyright violation. I then realized that a CC misattribution may not exactly be the same as a blatant copyright violation based on a previous misadventure and undid the modification. I may have disrupted some automatic processes by doing so.

If you realize that an old upload turns out to be a non-commercial CC image that was misattributed, is there a specific way to dispose of it or have I been doing it almost-correctly?

@Macrophyseter: In this type of situation, a good option could have been to tag the file with the "speedydelete" tag. The "copyvio" tag is okay too, because the publication of a non-free work with an unauthorised free license tag is indeed a copyright violation, although it may seem strange to request one's own upload for copyvio. The "delete" tag is also okay, but it can take much longer before the deletion occurs. So, in theory, any of the three tags is okay. However, in the present case, you already created a normal deletion request page. So, your option now is to add a comment there to suggest a speedy deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:36, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the tips! Speedy deleting one of my old uploads myself for copyvio is the best thing I could probably do at the moment. Otherwise, it would be collecting dust and a legitimate issue could occur down the line if someone decides to use it elsewhere. But is there a penalty for multiple CC misattributions even if they were of old uploads and if I deleted them on those grounds myself, like there is for blatant copyright violations against all rights reserved content? Not that I am going to make another misattribution, but I had made a number of sourced uploads before learning of the unacceptability of noncommercial CC images and I need to check my uploads to make sure that I did not mistake any more noncommercial licenses for free ones in the past.Macrophyseter (talk) 06:43, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
"Penalty", as in someone on Commons would scold or block you? Not if you act in good faith and you take action as soon as possible to fix the mistakes. That's good. "Penalties" would be for people who act in bad faith or don't fix their mistakes. Reusing a group of images without alteration

I am writing online lessons and I'd like to use images found on Wikimedia to illustrate some points. I won't be altering the images in any way. I think I read some time ago in Wikimedia copyright info that such a group of unaltered images is called something like a collection and is treated a little differently; but I've just been reading all the license pages and can't find that info again now. Is there anything about my use that is unusual? I believe either of the CC licenses allow commercial use, so I could sell the lessons? And if it's an SA license do I need to make the images available for sharing from my work, or just assume the person wanting the image can use the attribution to get it from Wikimedia, like I did? Thanks for any clarification you can give me. I love Wikimedia for making such an assortment of talented work available and I need to understand how to use it correctly.   • @Vgrlamb: Assuming that you credit each image according to its license, there should be no special issue because you use more than one.
  • Yes, you could sell the license.
  • If you are not altering the images, SA is probably not a concern. However, if an image is SA and you alter it, you must license your alterations as SA.

Can't get wikicode

@Nyttend backup: Normally, you would click the first "diff" link, then the first "edit" link in the right column. I would like to know too. I don't know when and why the system began to make inaccessible the wikicode of some revisions. I noticed it last month on many pages and it is an annoying problem. Thanks, Jeff G., but I know the basics (I've been here since 2006 :-) — I'm just trying to get the plaintext for that revision. If I go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=418869033 I see the rendered text of course, and if this were working like normal, adding &action=edit to the URL would let me see the text, but https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=418869033&action=edit just gives me the changes that would happen if I reverted to oldid=418869033. Functionally, we've lost read access to all code for all diffs in which the structured data were present, which makes no sense (I hope this is a bug, not something that was intended), and as far as I can tell, the only way to regain access is to revert the old edit. Not a good idea if I want to revert content but don't want to lose the structured data, or if I simply want to see the text as of that edit. The change that removed the ability to see old wikitext was discussed at Commons talk:Structured data/Archive 2018#Necessary changes to how viewing and using old file page revisions functions, where RIsler (WMF) said, The ultimate point is that there *will* be a way to view the Wikitext of a past revision, we just haven't settled on the best way to do that yet. I want to add the cover of one of my novels to my Wikipedia page. Since I wrote the novel, it is basically my own work, but of course the design of the cover belongs to the publisher. Can I upload it or should I ask for permission from my publisher? (I'm sure they will say yes!)

How to tag a user-generated historical map as erroneous?

Commons does not only host historical maps reproduced from reliable sources. It also contains user-generated maps, some of them of very high didactic value, but unfortunately some of them contain blatant errors.

One example I have run into is File:Camino Español.PNG. In it, the County of Burgundy is depicted as taking up a large chunk of nowadays Switzerland when in fact it lay further west, in nowadays France.

How can one tag such erroneous maps to warn editors that they should either be corrected or not used to illustrate Wikipedia articles? --Hispalois (talk) 10:19, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Good idea, however that page seems rarely used and the user might not get a rapid answer there. A possibly more direct option could be to contact the talk page of one of the volunteers in the section "team members" of the page Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Uganda. Or maybe it might be simply a matter of copying the string {{Wiki Loves Earth 2020|ug}} from the small duplicate and inserting it in the larger version. The photo file name on Commons is File:Arlington-Reef-2018-aerial-view-Luka-Peternel.jpg however it is not found or recognized on Wikipedia (please see the article link). Working with bad meta data

Hi. I just created Category:1980 in Benghazi because I found File:شط الصابري - panoramio.jpg, which says it was taken in 1980. However I noticed that the meta data says it was taken with a w:en:Nokia C2-01, which wasn't sold until after March 2011. I suspect the camera operator didn't set the date, so we got the factory default date. Other than changing the image date to "after March 2011" is there are anything else I should do to flag up the bad meta data? From Hill To Shore (talk) 07:10, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

For what it's worth, no, the subject of an image has no special rights to use it, let alone relicense it (although they do have personality right that may prevent someone else from using it in certain ways).   • How did she come to own the copyright of a picture of her? That is very unusual: normally the photographer would own the copyright, and copyrights can be transferred only by a formal document. If you have evidence that there was such a transfer you can pass it along, in line with the procedures laid out at COM:OTRS. Jmabel: This was a publicity photo that she hired the photographer to take of her. It was used in several of her programs, articles, etc., and appears in several places online. You mention that it is impossible for you to find the names of the photographers and many/all of the photographers are believed to be deceased. Do you have an indication of when the photographs were taken and in which country or countries? Hill To Shore: The photograph was taken in the United States (Nashville, Tennessee) around 1945. She hired the photographer to take the photo that would be used in her publicity, programs, articles, etc. It was understood that the photograph would be used for this purpose.Nina07011960 (talk) 00:15, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

{ping|Nina07011960}}If the photograph was taken in the U.S. in 1945, there are three possibilities:
  1. The photographer never transferred copyright to Ms. Kennedy. When the copyright was up for renewal in 1973 [which it would have under the U.S. copyright law prevailing at the time] they or their heirs bothered to do so, and the photographer (or, more likely their heirs) still holds copyright. This seems unlikely: photographers did not habitually renew their copyrights on 28-year-old publicity photographs that were commissioned by someone else, and it isn't like she was, say, Greta Garbo and the photo would have obvious significant economic value.
  2. The photographer transferred copyright to Ms. Kennedy, but we have no proof of that because the document is lost; when the copyright was up for renewal, Ms. Kennedy bothered to renew it, so copyright still persists; you inherited that copyright and now want to offer a license. This seems to be the scenario you are claiming, but it also seems unlikely to me: would Ms. Kennedy (or her attorneys) really have been careful enough with copyrights to renew a copyright in 1973, but not to leave papers like copyright transfers and renewals among the documents you inherited?
  3. Regardless of who held the copyright from 1945 to 1973, they failed to renew. The picture is in the public domain; you don't actually own any intellectual property rights to it, and neither does anyone else. Given that you are in physical possession of it, you can freely upload as {{PD-US-not renewed}}. This seems to me the most likely case.

I have a detailed zoomed excerpt from an official Georgia DOT map archive I would like to add. The original whole map is at the link. http://www.dot.ga.gov/DriveSmart/MapsData/Documents/HwyAndTransportationMaps/1975_1976.pdf The closest wording I have found to rights use is "THIS MAP IS FOR FREE DISTRIBUTION TO THE CITIZENS OF Georgia and to visitors as an aid to pleasant travel."

@WildStar: We usually only delete older revisions of files if those revisions have serious problems, like copyright or privacy violations.   • @Sisbroswik7373: That is unclear, but if you are asking about watermarks: we don't ban watermarks, but they are discouraged. We allow them mainly so that we can upload third-party images that are free-licensed but contain a watermark. Quick question about the flag of France categories

A user (who is from France) had told me if it is necessary to categorize flags under:

I created these with a purpose to show images with the flags of France. I am not too sure if I should keep them or if I should delete them. Also, the user had suggested to have "an unique category by department if you need", I am not sure if I should these pictures to a unique category by department. While I do like categories flags by subdivision but at the same time, I am not too sure if these categories are perfect or not. Reuse in Youtube videos

A query on behalf of another:

How broad is "derivative work" generated by use of CCBYSA (3.0 or 4.0) photographs duplicated off wikipedia - if a photo is used in the middle of a youtube video, the summary of what's in the photo would seem to be, but would talking about the activity seen? Would the whole youtube video, including non-related bits?

All the other aspects of reuse would be in compliance.

@Jmabel: , hi, I did consider there, then here, and also the talk page of derivative use - thought I'd ask here as hopefully you can at least confirm the right place to ask.
Reusing content under standard copyleft licenses means the same license applies to derivative works. One of the more common forms I'm asked about are using Wikipedia photos (I know, but they don't, that most are actually on Commons) within a youtube video. I was wondering how far a piece of work had to stretch from a photograph within it before it would no longer be bound under the same copyright license. Nosebagbear (talk) 19:07, 17 May 2020 (UTC)
If the use is an unaltered, image, then as far as I can tell (but again, there may be more expertise at Commons:Village pump/Copyright) the only requirement is any license-conformant credit. I would like to know how I can make these documents easily viewable by anyone looking my name up on the internet. Will they need to specifically look under Wikipedia to see these documents? Record Cover

Hello, I have made a record cover in which I have used a couple of images from Wikimedia Commons. They are not used in full but only parts of them. There is no natural way to incorporate a link to the source so now my question is: Am I allowed to use these images? If not, is there a way to licence them for the usage? Generally for CC-BY images you need to provide an attribution reasonable for the media. See some examples on Commons:Attribution. In your case a short credit line at the bottom would suffice. I am working on the living person Wikipedia site and I could not find the picture under the free license. What will be the next steps should I do? I did email the person I am writing about for a photo. But I am not sure I will receive the response. Therefore, are there any alternative approaches that I could try?

  • @Quinndo: Since you don't say who the person is, it's hard for anyone to give you any concrete help. If you will be more specific about whose photo you are looking for, there is some chance someone can help.
  • I assume you mean you are working on an article about some living person on one or another of the (language-specific) Wikipedias (if you meant something else, please clarify).
  • Sometimes you just have to go without a photo because no free-licensed photo of your subject is available.
  • Some (but not all) of the Wikipedias allow some non-free images (uploaded to the particular Wikipedia, not to Commons), but most do not allow this for photographs of living people. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

  • @Quinndo: Again, I presume you are talking about an article, not a "site". I presume this is en:Christine Holgate.
  • At least as far as Wikipedia is concerned, photos are not a requirement. If someone else is placing "requirements" on you, do remember to report them per en:WP:COI. - Jmabel ! talk 15:26, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
  • It's usually very hard to find free-licensed images of businesspeople. If I had to do this, and I weren't in a position to simply take the photograph myself (or contact someone to take it for me), my first try would probably be to contact the account of https://www.flickr.com/photos/aseaninaus/39609869475 on Flickr and see if they would be willing to free-license that image, or even a crop of it just showing Ms. Holgate. I'm the publisher of a textbook and need to contact the author of a particular photo to confirm some details of permissions for reproduction.

Can anyone tell me how that's done?

I've been to the author's talk page bt see no clear indication of how to message them.

I understand copyright etc. — so I don't need answers about copyright — just how to reach the author.

Maybe move to COM:VPT, MGA73? What do you think, 4nn1l2 (as the latest editor in the template)? I would suggest to change this template to {{Minimum}} and afterwards link it over Wikidata with the min templates in other wikis. BTW in Enwiki it seems to be updated using a module. Accordingly we could move {{Max}} to {{Maximum}} and {{Mod}} to {{Modulo}}. Just to be sure, this should find all direct uses without files, right (?): all: insource:"min" insource:/\{\{ *[Mm]in( |\||\})/ -prefix:"file:" (including files will show results where users do think this is a lang template, exactly like the example of MGA73). {{Max}} und {{Mod}} are even heavier used, but language tags are reserved by IANA, too. Uploading a big bunch of .map files

@Kalbbes: Hi. Although there are other ways, I suggest going to your preferences, then enabling a gadget named "RotateLink" (under "Interface: Files and categories" section). Hacked

    • 7ZIP itself is just a compression/decompression tool, so I suspect that after installing 7ZIP you downloaded another archive file from a different website that was compromised by a virus. Well I just bought my laptop 3 days ago and I’m inspiring to become a Dev so I signed up to take classes and I got a trial to use a Microsoft developers toolkit so I took it for a test with intuition and looking around and reading I got directed to so many different pages that felt like I was being tested then a wiki page suggested that I download 7zip then install the software to use wiki everywhere to continue research I didn’t install the software only the 7zip after that I noticed my laptop acting weird so I started looking around and noticed the numbers didn’t make sense the numbers were a different computer all together so I started to find out why and in the process of it I noticed task running in the back ground so I crossed referenced a few and continued to try and debug it along the way in the search I read that the program was used as virtual reality imaging working with a live learning algorithm of my search making it harder and harder to debug it would continue to loop back to step 1 every time I got it wrong I ended up getting to level 4 how do I know this because every time I was able to debug a part of it the readme would say lvl1 lvl2 etc. it came to a point where I got frustrated I turned off my internet put it in airplane mode then my iPad and phone started acting weird (flashing) the laptop continued working of the RF from Bluetooth I turned off all electronics. If you want a reference look up (brainwave) (EEG)...there’s more things I was reading about in specific page in Wikipedia that I’m afraid to mention cuz of what happened it involves (Hz) (fMRai) I would love to work/help Wikimedia but I’m honestly a bit shook and can’t differentiate who’s research benefits (humans) and who wants to control it (alias insects)..maybe I’ve shared too much? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ecxis (talk • contribs) 06:06, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

@Belrien12: You can upload these poster yourself, but directly at the English Wikipedia using a fair use rationale. E.g. at the English Wikipedia go to "Upload file" and open the Upload Wizard. In Step 3, select "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use." Enter the name of the article where you would use the poster and select "This is the official cover art of a work." In the drop-down menu choose "Movie poster", and fill in the other required fields. Please note though that this is the walkthrough procedure for the English Wikipedia only since not all Wikipedias accept fair use. So a user of the site called "futuretimeline.net" or "futuretimelne.forum" named Yuli Ban created a map a few years ago. In it, FDR was an incompetent president, leading to a rise of technocracy in America, meaning it gave it's pacific possessions to the Japanese in WW2. After the war ended, the USSR invaded the rest of Europe, but lost Mongolia to Japan and began fighting them in skirmishes for years to come. America got stronger and more tyrannical, the soviets and Japanese became weaker but more free, and it seems technocracy will rule the future. Here's the discussion.

Now, I was inspired, and created a similar timeline with amendments. FDR wasn't nominated, leading to Hoover still being president. Howard Scott gave a beter speech, leading to the technocrats taking power in 1937, and complete control in 1940. Most of what Yuli described happens, but socialist rebellions occur in France, Italy, and Yugoslavia. The allies call all of Europe to fight the soviets, but loose due to American and Japanese intervention. Ireland goes technocratic, Wales and Scotland become american puppets, and England gets carved into occupation zones. The British empire collapses, with it's remains hiding out in South Africa. The rest collapses into dissaray. Persia becomes a Korea analog, and a de facto biding war begins between South and North America over German scientists. Egypt goes into civil war, and Iraq takes control of Mesopotamia. France, Italy, and Yugoslavia become independent and get some puppets.

Now, I didn't get his permission, since I don't have an account on the forum, so the question is-is this different enough that I can post it here?

Hi there. Actually your photos are copyrighted automatically as soon as you create them, and you don't need to waive this right to upload them here. We have a lot of free licences that require attributing the original photographer, i.e. you. So while you won't receive any payment or royalties, you will still get credited when a photo of yours is used. Please see COM:Licensing#Well-known licenses for an overview of acceptable licenses with attribution. Amy Elizabeth Adams is named, without image, on pages 34 and 42 of the book (which are reproduced respectively on pages 42 and 50 of the .pdf file of Commons). If you want to find if the book has an image without the name on some other page, you probably will have to browse the book. Why is making Creator pages so cumbersome?

When trying to make Creator:Example, you have two options with and without "wikidata [sic] item ID". This is already confusing as not everyone knows what Wikidata is and there is not any explanation on the default text for a blank page there as to what that is. Template:Creator#Syntax_#1:_for_people_with_pages_on_Wikidata does explain this but it still seems needlessly complex. Then, if you manage to make a Creator page, for some reason, you are met with a warning message that reads "This Creator template is relying on a Wikidata item, which is missing the Commons Creator page (P1472) property. Please click the Commons to Wikidata QuickStatements.svg icon above to add it!" and when you click on that, you are taken to some third-party tool that is also confusing and requires OAuth to another website that may redirect you back to Commons but sometimes it doesn't (as it didn't just now for me) and then you have to use a pending token to add to a batch or some other technical jargon that is also confusing and frequently fails. And if it does fail, there's no clear way to fix it of if it's still in a batch queue somewhere or if it will ever be fixed. I have made many Creator pages successfully and sometimes I have no way to add this Creator page to Wikidata. Why do humans even have to do this? This seems perfectly suited for a bot. I have fixed the creator page issue at Wikidata, but we still need a Category:Simon Tatham. I haven't found any images created by Tatham himself so far, other than some Putty screenshots where he is merely credited in the software licence, so I'm wondering why we would need a creator template in the first place. Well, I guess this is another example of the shortcomings of Wikidata, and I don't have a solution. My only advice here is to use the "traditional" template parameters instead of importing everything from WD. Flickr Public Domain

Hi. So I uploaded an image from Flickr where it's clearly labled "Public domain", and the Upload Wizard guided me through that process, and I was even able to select that license for the image page - but now this is being disputed by an automated tool. The help text even states: "PDM is not legally operative in any respect", so I'm wondering: why is the Upload Wizard even offering to select a PD license when it's disputed later on? If I understood the help text correctly, I now have to approach the coyright owner, ask them if they are willing to release the work under another (non-PD) license, have them say so on the Flickr site, and then try to upload the picture again? Because, the image is about to be deleted from Commons and I doubt that I'm able to do all that in due time :( -- Evilninja (talk) 04:52, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

  • @Evilninja: It's allowed because some PDM photos are fine -- e.g. a photo of a 19th-century painting -- but the PD mark as such isn't a basis to know something is licensed. Basically, if you bring in a photo from Flickr with a PD mark, you have to provide your own PD tags justifying why the image conforms to Commons licensing rules. - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

        • It's also a somewhat common occurrence for Flickr users to choose PDM when they really mean CC0 (the Flickr license chooser does not make the distinction between them clear), but it's never a good idea to assume that. Please do not remove speedy deletion templates yourself. They need to be evaluated by administrators who will then either keep or delete the file. I have now decided to keep the file for the time being because I couldn't find any evidence that it had been published prior to your upload here. Please assume good faith though for Mhhossein's suspicion, because this file was in fact indexed by Google 4 days ago on a page that appears to be a scam site. Please check the phrase "barista in clovis, california bikini" at Google images. I still have the full pic on my phone. I cannot control other people who would use my pic for their schemes. Uploading an autographed program?

I was correcting the Schoolhouse Rock! listing, correcting the premier date for the Schoolhouse_Rock_Live! theatrical production.

I was going to upload a scan of the original program that I have, which is signed by two of the Schoolhouse Rock! writers and also contains additional production data. But I'm not sure how to properly state the copyright information.

  • The fact that it scanned and signed is irrelevant. Neither signatures nor scanning are copyrightable. The copyright is exactly the copyright of the program. So probably not something you can put on Commons: it's presumably copyrighted and not free-licensed.
  • You can cite it (for Wikipedia) without uploading a copy, if the information you need is in the program. Printed sources are fine, no real preference for online sources except convenience. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

If you were to get down to a unit so small it would not recognizably be that work it would be de minimis, but then it would no longer be interestingly related to that work. What is Commons accepting policy? & Unsplash

I have downloaded images and some of images are invalid for use in Commons: such as copyright issues. I know that Commons is freely licenced site and accepting free images such as pictures taken in camera, and some sites has an explicit license that declares they are freely licensed for any commercial and non-commercial use. E.g– Unsplash. This site still claimed it's content is freely licensed, the images contributed by volunteer uploaders to Unsplash are free content. Last time, I had uploaded the Motherland Monument by Robert Anasche in Unsplash. However the image tagged as nomination for deletion and the reviewer gave a link. I noted that the site "still declares it's free content and allows to use in either commercial or non-commercial purpose". You can see it's privacy terms. The Unsplash license is considered non-free here at Commons because it has this disclaimer: "This license does not include the right to compile photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service." Uploads at Wikimedia Commons need to be free for any kind of use, so this restriction is not acceptable. Please have a look at COM:WHERE though. Images published at Unsplash before June 5, 2017 were all licensed under a Creative Commons Zero license. These may still be uploaded here with an {{Unsplash}} license template. delete photo from my sandbox

Hi there,

I'm currently creating a page in my sandbox and uploaded a wrong photo by mistake. I simply want to delete it and upload the correct photo. When I try to upload the corrected one I get a warning that it's a violation. Both photos are owned by me, taken with my own camera. I've tried reading all the help files on this with no luck. The rename gadget, although checked in my preferences, isn't showing up for me. Can you please delete the file Indiratiwarikolkata2019.jpg so I can upload the proper image, or provide instructions for how I can do this myself?

Hi Jeff, It's actually a crop of the original photo, that's why. It wouldn't let me upload the 2nd one at all. So it wd have the same exif data as the one currently uploaded. I was seeing how it looked on the completed page, so potentially even this smaller one won't be the "final" one. Really it's ok if they all stay online. Ordnance Survey Boundary Line maps

I am trying to use London locator maps in info boxes, some, eg File:Camden London UK location map.svg, can be invoked using "| map_type = United Kingdom London <whatever>". For a few, eg. I think I know now what you mean: en:User:De728631/sandbox. This happens because en:Module:Location map/data/United Kingdom London Hillingdon is coded to have the ward map as a default location map for Hillingdon, whereas en:Module:Location map/data/United Kingdom London Camden and others have the street maps hardcoded: I'm afraid without changing the Modules in questionyou won't be able to get another map, and the infoboxes at the English Wikipedia don't seem to support custom maps either. Can't link categories

I created a category Category:Rafael Caro Quintero. I was going to link to his Wikipedia article but the "Add links" button doesn't show up on my sidebar. The "Edit links" button does for categories/pages that already have links to other places. Kingofthedead (talk) 06:58, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

  • @Kingofthedead: You need to go to the Wikipedia article and navigate from that to the existing Wikidata item. Then add this via Wikidata. It doesn't create a link back, and it doesn't connect to Wikidata or to any Wikipedia other than English. Unless you are just saying you want a link in the visible text description of the category (if any), in which case the best way to do that is to write {{en|Whatever you want to say…{{w|Rafael Caro Quintero}} … etc.}}. - Jmabel ! talk

File not behaving: Why can't I get it to animate?

Why won't any of the newer versions I have attempted animate? As of right now, if I scroll down on the file history, only the original (poor color) image is animated. Why can't I get any of the other images to animate? I would like to keep the highest quality color-corrected version of the image, but have a preview version that shows on Wiki pages that will show the animation. @Ikjbagl: It is a too high resolution GIF image like your one so it will not be animated as it says "Note: Due to technical limitations, thumbnails of high resolution GIF images such as this one will not be animated.". Do you want to make it animated but smaller and poorly colored? Also it is not your problem,[1][2][3] Wikimedia Commons has technical limitations for media/pictures. --Red-back spider (talk) 09:34, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Can't move userpages with Cat-a-lot

Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/05/Category:Globally locked commons users was just closed as keep a few hours ago, but because everyone agreed that it had a capitalisation error, I've moved the category to Category:Globally locked Commons users. I then attempted to used Cat-a-lot to move the contents (52 userspace pages, nothing else) from "commons" to "Commons", but for some reason only 1 of the 52 pages was moved. Any idea what happened? (The 1 page was User talk:, while the 51 pages were all User:, if that matters.) My first thought was that this category was transcluded by a template, but when I picked User:Blackmagicvashikaranspecialist at random, I saw that the category call appears directly on the userpage. (Also, I'm an admin, so whether or not these userpages are protected shouldn't affect me.) Finally, I re-tried moving the 51 pages, and just like before I saw that all 51 pages got the normal coloured highlight and Cat-a-lot says "51 files selected" just above "Check over-categorization", but when I ordered the move, I got an error message from Chrome:

No file is selected

This is identical to the message that I get when zero pages of any sort are selected and I tell it to move something. Finally, note that "Allow categorising pages (including categories) that are not files" is ticked in my preferences; if it weren't, presumably the User talk: wouldn't have gotten moved either. @DJAMS79: I presume this is about File:Vidéo ET2.webm; if I'm wrong, then please let me know what file it is actually about. The license tag you need to add is {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
It is possible that someone will ask you to send confirmation to COM:OTRS that shows that the Vimeo account in question is, indeed, yours.

SVG rendering issue

Standard Model of Elementary Particles and Gravity

Hi, I am having a problem with an SVG as it is rendered by the wiki engine for scaled PNGs. In all browsers the SVG is displayed correctly, only the PNGs derived by wikimedia from it, are missing elements.

The file in question is found here. It is an extension of my files here and here, which produces no such problem. Is there a known issue with the way the wikimedia/wikipedia platform is rendering SVGs? Cush (talk) 09:28, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Cush, according to xlink:href - SVG | MDN xlink is deprecated only for SVG2, but you declared the file already in your first uploaded revision to be in version 1.1. I do not know, though, whether it had worked if you’d declared version 2. — Speravir – 00:03, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

@Cush: href ist not a SVG-feature (at least currently), and should not have any effect of rendering, so technically rsvg is correct and chrome and firefox rendered it "wrong".
SVG1.1 ist the current standard and SVG2 ist not released, and SVG1.2/SVG2 is hardly supported at all (except browsers). rsvg does not even (fully) support SVG 1.1 (e.g. textPath in File:SVG_Test_TextAlign.svg), see Librsvg_bugs or Category:Pictures_showing_a_librsvg_bug contains almost 1000 Images. SVG2 is not cosindered as a rsvg-bug, it is considered (under SVG1.1) as a broken file, some images can be found here: Category:Images_with_SVG_2.0_features, most allready repaired (so check filehistory).
rsvg does not consider version at all, you can also write version="3.14159265" or anything you like, nobody cares (except humans).

@Speravir: For this example whith href-problem you just need to use https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgworkaroundbot/ and the file is repaired. (choose any option you like, for this case I would recommend to keep all options deactived, except you want to have the file optimized)

@Speravir: Validation has Pros and Cons. I generally do recommend to not validate files, since it removes important edior-Data such as gridlines/reference lines. However if you run into rendering problems it is good to try to fix them by validation, but thats rarely the case. And validating a file, such as removing flowRoot leads to removment of content, that cannot be restored. And flowRoot (since 2016?) does not make any problems, but removing does and if it was removed bevore uploading it is lost forever and not restorable. So validating is easy, but restoring removed information is impossible.
My Tool can validate >95% (don't know the number) of "invalid" files, but as long as you dont run into rendering-issues I do not recommend to validate files.
The reason for not using Doc-Type-Definition (DTD) is a too strict validation, but might be better if you run into rendering-issues. But it also argues you should validate your files, which is imho partly contradicting to the recommendation of not using Doc-Type-Definition (DTD).
So I consider Help:SVG#Validation as oversimplified, and I would split it in Pros and Cons.
As you can see in User:JoKalliauer/Optimization#When_is_optimizing/validating_files_undesired? there are many Cons. But I might need to discuss that at Help:SVG.
To be able to discuss validation, we would have to declare what we mean by validation, there are four main types of validation User:JoKalliauer/Optimization#Different_Validations: 1)DTD-validation 2)SVG-Validation 3)XML-Validation 4)Renderissue-checks
So there should be a short recommendation for Newbies, but it should also show that there exist not a generall single right solution. (That might be a longer work.)

The sentence the xlink namespace has been officially deprecated [for SVG 2.0], but it is retained here for older svg rendering engines is correct if you add the bold words, therfore it might be missleading, but who reads the svg-source-code of a specific file? Almost nobody, or persons that know svg. And who cares about the Definition? Most Browsers support common SVG2.0-features, also also this is wrong according to SVG1.1 . For commons you have currently to write xlink:href, and that's what the comment is saying (maybe with a wrong explantation). I think keeping href= is a ok, since it does not do any harm. Hmm, I thought I had already uploaded a fixed version of the image in pure SVG 1.1 with only the xlink:href attributes. The issue of 1.1 vs 2.0 is somewhat confusing. I would have thought the Wikimedia rendering engine should be able to deal with any variants contained in a file, even faulty ones, as long as they render correctly in browsers in the market. Supporting more features leads to increased rendering time. There is a suggestion to use browserrending instead of librsvg: phab:T5593 . Technical error with image taken by camera

can I use images from other wikipedia articles eg in different languages?

Where to open semi-centralized questions?

Besides posting on its low-traffic talk page, is there another way to ask potentially interested editors about potential issues with a photo? In this particular case, File:Dong-Dang-Vietnam-China -border-150dpi.jpg looks bizarre and potentially doctored to me, but I’m not sure and I doubt asking at its talk page will really resolve anything. Is there a general place for this kind of question, like an analogue to enwiki’s WikiProjects? I'm only aware of Commons:Centralized discussion, AN, and Village Pump here.             @MarkH21: Open-ended research question (or failing to work out historical stuff after the other things I'm about to mention): en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Humanities, because it is the one place I can think of to ask for research.
            Provenance: I would start on the talk page, pinging the uploader; if I didn't get satisfaction there, I'd probably look to see if any of their other uploads looked suspicious, and whether they might have relied repeatedly on a particular source that might be doing dubious attributions.
            If I thought it came from where it said, but the French magazine had faked the image in the first place: I'd certainly start with articles about that magazine, trying to gauge its reputation. If it's reputation were solid, I'd probably consider the matter settled; if not, I'd have to think that through, not sure what I'd do next.
            If you had other images that suggested this one was faked, I'd have said at a minimum to tag it with {{Factual accuracy}}.
            And, of course, if I thought there was a problem with Wikipedia articles using a possibly fictional representation, I'd at least hit their talk pages, if not edit them myself. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

The decoration on the small building is visible on several photographs of the same era. For example, this blog has a collection of postcards (near the middle of the page). Most photos are taken from a distance and the decoration is visible but not its details. My first article - image upload issue

I have tried to upload my photo to the article (Northwood Prep School Drone Shot.jpg) but when I do that I get the following error message "Something went wrong. We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

Saying error when I upload image from camera

Using family photos

My sisters and I are the sole heirs to my parents' estate. Both my mother and father are dead. Can we use my father's photos in a Wikipedia article that we are writing? The photos depict early ski mountaineering and rock climbing activities. My father himself is pictured in some, along with others who participated in these activities. @Dmbrinton: Usually, the copyright is owned by the photographer, not by the persons who have copies of the photo. Collections of family photos often include photos taken by different persons. In that context, the expression "father's photos" is unclear. So, the answer to your question depends, for each photo, on who took the photo. From what you say, you inherited the copyright on the photos for which you can tell or reasonably assume they were taken by your father or your mother. Deleting replaced images

It seems like there use to be a way to request deletions from the image page. If it's there I can't remember how to do it. I don't know how many others do this but I sometimes I upload improved copies of my images making the previous ones obsolete. Also, if you submit images to the Quality Image page, people often suggest changes. It's another reason for pointless earlier copies. This results in an accumulation of useless obsolete copies of pictures that use take up storage space unnecessarily. There needs to be a way for the original uploader of an image to delete these useless files. Jim Evans (talk) 17:15, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Licensing requires the attribution to be available forever, even if it isn't visible. So deleting things doesn't free storage space as any previous version of a file can be undeleted. Licensing of translated diagrams?

Hello, I've made a translation of this diagram about RNA transcription. What's the correct way to license and give credit? When I upload, do I say it's my "own work" and I'm the copyright holder? The original creator used Creative Commons Attributive 3.0 Unported -- does that mean I should also use CC 3.0? (Attribution, or Attribution ShareAlike?)

I can provide the photo I have of the work and the background is exactly the same as the one shown. It is not another similar piece that is at the Brooklyn Museum. The whole display with two pieces of pottery behind is exactly the same. Best way to download a batch of files

In order to perform a machine learning study, I would like to download around 100 000 files from commons.wikimedia.org (around 10 Gbytes of data). However, I can't find a recommendation on the best way to do it for Wikimedia Commons servers. Should I download Wikimedia dumps (hundred of Gbytes) and parse them? or should I download all files, file-by-file leaving a 3 second sleep time between each downloaded file? Regarding HTTP requests, the former method looks better, whereas regarding the data size to be downloaded, the latter method looks better. Maybe there are also also other better methods. So I would love to have an advice from the community. Thanks!

upload of newspapers 1929-1930

Thank you Lotje, it seems Wikimedia Commons will only accept works from 1925 or before. We have to comply with US Copyright Law and Commons is enforcing a 95-year minimum for Public Domain. Flickr Pro accounts are pretty reasonable; you could host these yourself on there for the 5 or so years until we can have them here, and then we could upload here. Or...

Justine Harun-Mahdavi deleting pictures and the whole page

Dear Administration, I am the son of Justine Harun-Mahdavi, the autor of the book "Not without my man" or in German "Nicht ohne meinen Mann". These pages have been created many years ago. I have found them recently and have tried to complete them with more information as pictures of both main figures of the book, namely the autor (my mom) and her husband (my father). Now I protest again deletion of the page and the uploades pics. How can I avoid the deltion? How or who can help me with edition of new page? I´m a dentist and I´m not interested to be bothered with learning Wikipedia. I´m 53 years old and I have a fulltime job. But I´m paying money to wikipedia since many years, because I respect the efforts which are done for this encyclopedia. But beeing an editing autor for Wikipedia is a very stange thing. @Sasan Harun-Mahdavi: It's not too tricky. Copyright belongs to the photographer, not the subject of the photo. You will need the photographer (or their heir) to grant a license. That can be done via the process described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 17:33, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

How do I find the Gallery in which all my uploads are contained?

@Janvermont: Unless you have created a category or gallery for your uploads, the only place they are collected in is "Uploads", which appears at the top right of the page between "Watchlist" and "Contributions". Once on that page, it's an easy matter to copy them into Category:Janvermont images, which I have created for you. Rodhullandemu (talk) 21:42, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

(For me the first links to my uploads and for Jeff to his ones.) You can find this, too, as “uploads” on top right of your user page hidden behind the “More” popdown.
