File:KAL801Finalreport - Figure 1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open![edit]

Dear Sp1nd01,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:05, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 04:59, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

images with transparent backgrounds....[edit]

So, I re-did an image that you previously edited and uploaded. When I start removing the background from images, I sometimes keep going. (I made a jpeg, and it is half the size of your png, but the 24 frame gif is mega-bigger, so don't take any "file size crap" from me).

There are others there, also, and more on the way probably. I also made a new category for Vol. 1 at Category:A complete course in Dressmaking/Volume 1 and when the book is transcluded it should go to d:Q107523299.

I don't want to offend you or anyone; the images just looked fun and I was thinking of a template that could put non-animated images in Main and use animated images for works transcluded in User, so that a very fun book could be made at the same time.

Do you have the software for animating? I used GIMP and it was a matter of making the layers and keeping them straight. The perspective I used for the mirror lady, has her hand and mirror kind of disappearing in the distance but.... It is easy to make the blacks black and not gray, GIMP or PS or whatever. The black eye-dropper in the Levels dialog should do it. Leaving the background in and making it white is much more complicated, I understand some of the reasons for transparent png.

So, yell if offended. Ask questions if curious. Tell me to stay away from your project and/or images and I will just quietly upload to the subdir which you can safely ignore. And I am pinging SF @ShakespeareFan00: because of big feet it other peoples projects and let's agree that "what happens at the commons, stays at the commons" :) --RaboKarbakian (talk) 04:40, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you can get 'better' compression, with tweaked settings feel free to continue88.97.96.89 07:09, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
GIF is indexed, so no compression. I ran it through an optimizer, but it only knocked a couple of hundred kb from the total. It seems to me that gimp-1.2 optimizer was a lot better than this, cutting holes in the frames and making good use of "replace" and "combine". My first "aha" moment for understanding indexed images was when I opened an xpm file up in a text editor. XPM seems all but completely lost to the eworld, but if you ever get the chance to look at one, I recommend it. Real life metaphors might be an oil painting (for non-indexed images) vs. counted cross stitch or paint by numbers (for indexed). Where compression smooths the bumps in the painting causing less mass. That same color information gets totally reduced for indexing, from +2millions of colors to 256 colors.
PNG can be saved as either, btw. That used to be the main reason for leaving some of the background color under the lines as indexing causes a lack of smoothness (eliminates anti-aliasing) without the bit o' other color for it to graduate with. If Sp1nd01 would Mode-->Indexed those pngs, filesize would probably shame any jpeg. However, that is exactly not the reason that png has been recommended here. PNG is recommended due to losslessness (archival qualities), but indexing, while not a complete loss is close to it. So, if you are going to index png, you might as well use GIF; the only reason not to being mid-1990s political problems with UNISYS.
Okay, so, lecture over. I can't tweak the compression setting for my GIF because it doesn't really exist that way.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:18, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RaboKarbakian: @ShakespeareFan00: No offence taken here, I like what you have done, but it is well beyond my very basic abilities! I do have gimp, but can only manage the basic stuff like using the eraser. Please work away on the book(s), I'll keep dropping by to watch it progress and see what fun ideas you come up with for those images. There are plenty of other books requiring basic images that I will work on. Enjoy! Sp1nd01 (talk) 09:09, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Languageseeker: I don't have deletion rights; I've just marked them as copyvios. They fail enWS copyright policy - https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Help:Public_domain#Published_outside_the_United_States second row of the table. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:36, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
