Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Cultural heritage monuments[edit]

Veig que estàs traient categories de "cultural heritage monuments" d'imatges que contenen fotografies d'edificis i conjunts protegits com a monuments. Si us plau, no treguis aquestes categories a menys que sigui per posar-n'hi d'altres que hi estiguin incloses.--Pere prlpz (talk) 10:31, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

El problema no és que hagis posat categories noves, sinó que has tret les categories que hi havia. Per exemple, si una foto que tenia la categoria d'esglésies d'Osona la poses a esglésies de Viladrau, has fet la mateixa categorització més concreta, perquè la categoria d'esglésies de Viladrau és dins de la categoria d'esglésies d'Osona, i el que has fet és una millora. Ara bé, si una foto que és a la categoria de monuments la treus d'aquesta categoria, estàs desmuntant una categoria que hi havia sense substituir-la per res equivalent.

I les categories són millorables, i a moltes fotos hi falten categories, però de moment té una certa lògica i anem repetint esquemes entre categories similars.--Pere prlpz (talk) 22:48, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Els "cultural heritage monuments in Viladrau" són els que surten a la ca:llista de monuments de Viladrau, i que són els monuments oficialment inventariats o protegits, que actualment interpretem que són els elements inclosos a l'ca:Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya.

No tinc massa clar si els monuments haurien d'anar dins de la categoria de cultura. Semblaria lògic, però en molts municipis la majoria de fotos que hi ha són de monuments, i si no estan en més categories acaba quedant una cosa poc manejable. Crec que cal evitar categories que només continguin una categoria si no es preveu omplir-les aviat i si no hi ha una molt bona raó. Algunes categories locals de religió que has creat i que només contenen la subcategoria d'esglésies són una mica rares, a menys que pensis pujar aviat més fotos de religió (capellans, processons...?).--Pere prlpz (talk) 18:13, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bon dia! Dius que Religious buildings in Calella està categoritzat com a Cultural heritage monuments in Calella, cosa que jo no havia mirat, perquè no ho hauria d'estar, són categories independents l'una de l'altra, ja que a Calella hi ha molts més edificis religiosos que no són considerats a la llista del patrimoni cultural local, i si en fem alguna foto llavors no podrien anar inclosos dins la categoria. Caldria treure la categoria de Patrimoni de dins els edificis religiosos i afegir-la al convent dels Agustins. --Enfo (talk) 08:33, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Torres d'aigua de Calella[edit]

Ja torno a ser aquí. Les torres d'aigua haurien de tenir una categoria conjunta, ja que formen un element protegit (cosa que no és obstacle perquè la torre del Mercat també estigui inclosa dins la pròpia categoria del Mercat, ja que n'és un element adjacent). Per si et pot servir de referència, fixat en Torres de la Mina Pública d'Aigües de Terrassa, que n'agrupa tres de diferents. L'únic és que a Terrassa cadascuna és un monument per ell sol, mentre que a Calella les han ajuntades totes dues en un sol element protegit, per tant en aquest cas caldria crear un element tipus Torres d'aigua de Calella, categoritzat com a Cultural heritage monuments in Calella i Water towers in Catalonia, i aquí dins ficar-hi la torre del Mercat i la de l'Escorxador. --Enfo (talk) 08:40, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Houses in Calella[edit]

Ja torno a ser aquí. Veig que Houses in Calella l'has categoritzat com a Cultural heritage..., igual com els Religious buildings..., mentre que és una categoria més àmplia i que pot contenir cases que no siguin dins la llista de Patrimoni. Que ara les que hi hagin siguin totes dins la llista és perquè jo em vaig dedicar a penjar-ne només de les que entraven dins el concurs Wiki Loves Monuments, però en tinc d'altres que no estan protegides i que haurien d'anar també dins aquesta categoria genèrica, "Cases de Calella". Ho dic perquè si has creat més categories genèriques com aquestes cal separar una cosa i l'altra (seguint amb l'exemple terrassenc, veuràs que hi ha Buildings in Terrassa –i Factories in Terrassa, Churches in Terrassa, Schools in Terrassa, Masies in Terrassa, etc.– i Cultural heritage monuments in Terrassa, i malgrat que molts dels elements inclosos dins l'una i l'altra categoria es repeteixin són dues categories independents). --Enfo (talk) 08:50, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Venia pel mateix. A Commons:Categories#For_more_appropriate_categorization (lectura que et recomano) hi pots llegir que les categories es categoritzen pel seu tema i no pel seu contingut. Que ara mateix totes les fotos de cases de Calella que tenim siguin de monuments protegits, no vol dir que totes les cases de Calella siguin monuments protegits.--Pere prlpz (talk) 11:51, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Les categories, com més específiques millor, però cal crear primer les genèriques de les quals depenguin. El que aniria bé és que tots els municipis tinguessin si fa no fa les mateixes, i ara hi ha una mica de desgavell, la veritat... Per exemple, ara a Terrassa no tenim houses sinó només buildings (i a dins hi ha churches en general –que inclou esglésies, convents, capelles, ermites–, factories, schools, chimneys, museums, masies i no sé si alguna més; el que en queda fora són majoritàriament houses); no dic que no es pugui crear també una categoria de cases, però al començament no hi vaig pensar i ara em fa mandra hehehe. També es pot diferenciar entre cases vulgars i cases amb un cert nivell de protecció, és clar, i filar prim tant com es vulgui, però el més important és tenir com a mínim les categories genèriques per saber on anar a buscar... Cal tenir present també que una foto pot tenir més d'una categoria coincident (per exemple, tot i que tot siguin edificis, una masia pot ser també museu, pot ser que hi hagi una fàbrica amb xemeneia, etc.). --Enfo (talk) 09:41, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Les categories de "houses" les veig poc definides i molt grans, però es podrien fer. Els francesos fan una cosa semblant al que proposes, que és categoritzar els monuments per tipus (castells, esglésies, etc.), però ho fan a per departament (Category:Monuments historiques in Pyrénées-Orientales (city walls)). Una categoria d'esglésies de Calella que siguin monument protegit no la veig gaire útil per si sola. Quan més útils són aquestes subdivisions és quan el mateix esquema s'aplica a més zones geogràfiques. Fer una categoria amb totes les esglésies de Catalunya que fossin protegides i fer-ne subdivisions per comarca i municipi potser sí que seria útil. En qualsevol cas, això no voldria dir treure els monuments de la categoria del municipi.

De fet, posats a categoritzar per tipus, crec que fa més falta categoritzar els "buildings" per tipus (i per estils) que no pas subdividir els monuments per tipus.

Ara bé, el que seria més útil ara mateix és agrupar les imatges per monument, perquè és molt més fàcil categoritzar per altres criteris les fotos d'edificis i monuments si tot l'element està junt en una categoria. Amb el WLM de l'any passat ens hi vam estar fins al maig. A veure si aquest any acabem abans tot i tenir més fotos. Per al·lusions...[edit]

Em preguntes per què no vaig categoritzar les fotos de Calella si la majoria que hi ha ara són meves? Més que res perquè per al WLM vaig carregar més de 8.000 fotos al commons (aquí pots veure les estadístiques referents a les corresponents als Països Catalans), i vaig fent de mica en mica. De moment ja he creat totes les categories de monuments de Terrassa on hi ha més d'una fotografia, i només de Terrassa ja en vaig pujar més de mil. Les Torretes i altres mandangues[edit]

Tens raó que pujar fins a les Torretes no és pas com escalar el K2, però si ho fas després d'estar tot el dia caminant per Calella amunt i avall ja té el seu què. La subcategorització dels museus per comarques (de museus, esglésies, castells, escoles o el que sigui) està molt bé. En alguns casos està començada o està feta per algunes comarques només (normalment gràcies a algú a qui se li ha acudit de fer-ho), i no estaria malament sistematitzar-ho (igual com en aquests casos els espanyols ho subcategoritzen per províncies, els francesos per departaments, etc.).

Ah, gràcies per la foto! Les que vaig fer jo eren totes in situ, no des del turó del davant, ens faltava aquesta perspectiva. Per cert, no sé quin problema hi ha hagut amb la foto, que he vist que t'han fet un avís que hi falten alguns permisos. Jo, com que no sé mai què s'hi ha de posar, sempre pujo les fotos amb el formulari que hi ha a les llistes de monuments, independentment de quin monument agafi. Si és d'un monument determinat vaig a aquell monument concret, però si no és cap monument o bé no està llistat, n'agafo un de qualsevol i l'únic que faig és treure-li el codi de monument i posar-li la descripció que em rota.

Això de les cases també està bé, perquè així es diferencia les que són monuments protegits de les que no ho són. Ara la majoria de municipis només tenen buildings genèrics, no houses, però una subcategoria més concreta no fa mai mal.

Quan t'hi vulguis tornar a posar, ja ho saps... Per cert, també vaig anar a pentinar Arenys (i allà sí que em vaig fer un tip de caminar, fins a la platja de Sant Pol i tot) i Sant Pol, la llàstima és que quan vaig ser a Sant Pol no duia la llista de monuments i vaig anar fent una mica a la babalà, seguint el mapa turístic imprès per l'Ajuntament... Això dels safaris fotogràfics és molt engrescador... Per fer Figueres m'hi vaig estar dos dies, per Terrassa no sé quants, per Tarragona un dia sencer (i no vaig donar l'abast a fer-ho tot). Si fem una ullada a la politica actual llegim que "in general use the name most frequently used in English-language literature. For subjects of only local relevance, proper names in the original language are used generally". És a dir, s'ha d'usar el nom angles quan existeixi un traducció en angles d'us freqüent (com per exemple "Cathedral of Barcelona"), i es pot usar el nom en català quan es tracti d'esglésies locals sense traducció habitualment usada en anglès. Sobre els canvis veig que ja t'ha dit en Jordiferrer aproximadament el mateix que et diria jo. Tu mateix. Ara bé:

Tens una mostra d'opinions que et trobaràs a Commons sobre el tema a Commons:Bots/Requests/PereBot. Que una categoria porti al davant del nom l'afegit de "església de" només té alguna utilitat per una part petita de la humanitat i dels usuaris de Commons. Sospito que per aquí et poden venir crítiques. Per això, jo he estat creant les categories evitant la part genèrica sempre que ha estat possible, mirant que sigui defensable que el nom en català és el nom propi del subjecte. De fet, el que et diran és que si hi ha una part genèrica ha de ser en anglès. A més, fixa't que aquests canvis no tenen consens ni a la Viquipèdia, on no hi ha el problema de l'idioma.
El cas francès es manté tot i la seva originalitat, però fixa't que no és el que fan a tot Commons, sinó bàsicament el que fan els francesos.
Compte que Commons està més ple de jacobins del que sembla.

O sigui, que tinguis sort.

Me n'oblidava: Esborrar les categories en comptes de redirigir-les em sembla malament per dos motius:

Els noms que esborren no són incorrectes. Senzillament tu creus que n'hi ha un de millor. Si algú busca pel nom vell, val més ajudar-lo a trobar la categoria amb el nom nou. Diferent seria un nom amb una falta d'ortografia o un nom ambigu (que pogués significar una altra cosa).
Com més demanis als administradors que esborrin categories, més fàcil és que te'n trobis algun que no li agradi el canvi.

No li veig gaire utilitat a crear categories com "Museums in Solsonès by name". Afegeixen un nivell intermedi que alenteix la cerca. Quan vaig a Museums in Solsonès" ja hi podem trobar la llista de museus, que entenc que és una llista absolutament idèntica a la que podem trobar a "Museums in Solsonès by name". "Church interiors in Igualada" està dintre de "Church interiors in Anoia", la qual ja està dintre de "Church interiors in the province of Barcelona" . No hi ha cap funció administrativa per reanomenar automàticament categories. O bé són eines externes o bé amb bot. L'alternativa és marcar les categories amb {{Move}} on hi ha les instruccions per afegir-ho a les tasques d'un bot, però cal marcar-les una a una i veig que el bot té una llarga llista de categories pendents. --V.Riullop (talk) 08:21, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1. You are moving a lot of files between categories and blanking some categories. Category:Computed tomography images of necrotizing fasciitis Category:HRCT_images_of_Systemic_Sclerosis Please do a discussion before doing category moves. Renaming Computed tomography in category name to CT is not helpfull practice. I named them so because many admins renamed categories named by abbreviations to full name. Abbreviations in medicine can lead to confusions. Although some abbreviations such as CT is well established there is no clear guideline to what is established and what is not, so it is better to avoid abbreviations in category names.

2. You have removed categories from some files which are left only with hidden categories EXAMPLE. Please review back your edits and add appropriate categories to files.

The map showing ratification statuses of the European Charter of Minority or Regional Languages cannot be changed following the ovte in the French national Assembly. Nothing is ratified yet. The French Constitution ahs to undergo a full-fledged change first.

Aquest cap de setmana m'és impossible, però el que ve no et dic que no em vagui de pujar... Per cert, la xerrada que dius, al programa diu que és dissabte, no divendres (de fet, el dia 19 és dissabte). Si fos un divendres al vespre no podria pas venir, ja que depenc estrictament del transport públic i a més plego tard de la feina, tampoc no hi seria a temps. En dissabte, cap problema. Category:Oral and maxillofacial surgery is now only a subcategory of Category:Surgery. Therefore, Category:Surgical dentistry is now a subcategory of Category:Dentistry procedures. Perhaps, Category:Surgical dentistry should not be a subcategory of Category:Oral and maxillofacial surgery, if no then add a message to look for Category:Oral and maxillofacial surgery (with {{Cat see also}}).

Imágenes en castellano en la wikipedia gallega[edit]

Hola, Jmarchn. Acabo de ver que has cambiado unas imágenes en png por otras en svg en algunas páginas (que casualmente había hecho yo) de la Galipedia, lo cual supone, sin duda, una mejora del formato. Pero ese cambio llevaba asociado otro: la imagen original estaba en inglés y la nueva estaba en castellano, es decir, no estaba en el idioma de nuestra wikipedia, el gallego. Yo personalmente no tengo muy claro si es mejor dejar la imagen que estaba, que no estaba en gallego, pero si en inglés, que es un idioma muy internacional en ciencia y los términos que contenía eran facilmente entendibles sin necesidad de saber mucho inglés (bastaba con saber ciencia para inmediatamente entenderlos, ya que son muy similares a los terminos gallegos), o si es mejor ponerla en castellano. El castellano lo entendemos perfectamente en Galicia, pero ten en cuenta que por la misma razón la propia existencia de la Galipedia (o de la Viquipèdia) sería superflua, ya que los gallegos (o catalanes) siempre podríamos consultar directamente la wikipedia castellana para todo. Se podría añadir que en la práctica hay una cierta competencia entre las wikipedias en castellano y en gallego a la hora de decidir cuál se consulta. En consecuencia, en las páginas que hago yo siempre traduzco (siempre que me es posible) todas las imágenes en castellano al gallego, si bien dejo algunas en inglés (que también trato de traducirlas, naturalmente, pero no doy abasto). La mejor solución es traducir también esa imagen ahora al gallego. Intenté hacerlo, y si no está ya hecho es porque no pude abrirla en Inskape, que es el programa que uso, aunque no domino totalmente, ni mucho menos. Lo que ocurrió es que no conseguí bajarla y abrila en el Inkscape por mi desconocimiento. No sé si tengo que clicar en Copiar imagen o en Guardar imagen como o en dónde. Acabo preguntándote una cosa: ¿Cambiarías una imagen en inglés por otra en castellano en la wikipedia francesa, por ejemplo? Bien, puede ser también que todo sea un prejuicio mío y nada más y seguramente tu intención era buena, lo que he de agradecer. Por otra parte, hay imágenes mías en gallego que las encontré casualmente (así en gallego) en la wikipedia croata y vasca (eso que me enterara, que igual hay más, ya que he hecho docenas de imágenes para la wikipedia commons, generalmente traducciones), pero esa imagen la subieron ellos (los usuarios croatas y vascos), ya que no tenían imagen en el idioma propio de su wikipedia. --Miguelferig (talk) 22:49, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please never move a file from the general anatomy category to the human anatomy category without reading the description and the file name. You moved many files relating to animals froum Category:Inner ear to Category:Human inner ear. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Categories like Category:People of Zambia in health professions are not meta categories. I removed the metacat template from a !ot of these, but I see you've created some new ones that you put the template on. Please remove it. Category:People in health professions by country, the parent category, is a metacat (because its subcategories are grouped by country, the criterion named in the category name), so I added the template there. Hi!

This category is a sub category of:

Both of these are a subcategory of:

Category:Fingers

And "Fingers" is a sub category of:

Category:Human digits

So since "Fingers" are a part of Human digits then only human fingers can be in the category. And "Thumbs" are a part of "Fingers" and therefore only human thumbs can be in "Thumbs".

I think a lot of changes are needed if the category tree is going to be right.

SVG subcategories of <other topics>[edit]

Hi, I see you're taking topic XYZ and creating a subcategory SVG XYZ. This means that, say, biology readers need to switch out of thinking "biology subtopic of camouflage, of reproduction, of behaviour" and switch into thinking "SVG, what is that, oh, graphics" and then search in TWO directions, both bio and not. I'd say that makes searching MORE difficult. I suppose I see your thought that it's more organized - sure, it is - but there would be a huge number of such cats to create, and all at a price of convenience to the user. Undoubtedly, the existence of SVG categories entails the inconvenience you have cited. And there is another drawback: the work in creating, recategorizing files, and maintaining these categories.

Any action has advantages and disadvantages. And you have emphasized the disadvantages.

Obviously I wasn’t the first person to think that SVG categories would be useful. Many people have believed in the convenience of the existence of Category:SVG files and many subcategories of these "special" categories.

There is a clear advantage in research: the ability to find easily editable and translatable drawings.

Needless to say, whenever possible any editor should opt for SVG drawings towards others (PNG, JPG).

You must be a person who think and write in English, but those of us who have other languages as natives or who edit in other languages, it is very convenient for us to find those files that can be translated easily into our language and for our (localized) Wikipedia, then having SVG categories is very handy. I myself have translated many drawings into my language (Catalan) but also into other languages.

I am fully aware of the inconvenience you mentioned, to solve it I created some (specific) templates to facilitate navigation (i.e. {{DiseasesNav}}, used in thousands of category pages).

I understand that having large containers (i.e. Category:SVG physics) of uncategorized drawings is not a good experience for anyone looking for something specific.

Other currently unused possibilities and other small changes should be used to improve the results of the search in Commons, but this is not the topic of our conversation.

Out of respect for your opinion I abandon the creation of these types of categories in the field of biology, as that is not exactly what I know. But please don’t destroy the work I’ve done.

Category:Medicine. At beginning of this page, exists the message: "This is a main category requiring frequent diffusion and maybe maintenance. As many pictures and media files as possible should be moved into appropriate subcategories.". The categories are designed to quickly locate something by navigating through subcategories (proof it). In this case if all photos related to medicine were in this category (towards a more precise category) this category would contain hundreds of thousands of photos. An example of misuse of categories can be found in Category:ECG graphs.
Category:Analgesics. It is unnecessary for your photo to be here as all morphine is analgesic, and you already have the photo in Category:Morphine
Category:Opiates. The same reasoning above: morphine is an opiate.

I hope I have told you well. I am a physician and I have altruistically categorized thousands of files related to medicine, it is hard and endless job.

At your last uploads, e.g. RNA vaccine-ca.svg I saw that you used the Igen tag in a wrong way. Moreover, with your instruction in Edit JMN Inkscape you are recommending a wrong procedure, as

¡Please, do not just add the Inkscape or Igen templates! The correct way is to validate the file, and tag it with the number of the W3C errors. This can be done very easy by using the script.

Thanks for the script for Igen; I have already installed it. Although I do not understand why these errors occur. We hope that new versions of Inkscape do not produce these errors.

You say it might be better than many drawings in different languages to have only one, with all translations using the <switch> option. I do not agree, it is in a few cases if the priority is the good presentation and ease of reading the drawing. I already knew the <switch> system and currently I consider it is not a good system: Better tools are needed to embed text in other languages and the Wikimedia svg file viewer needs to be improved (it not have the effect of smoothing the outline of the characters).

La imagen que representa la hematopoyesis presenta el siguiente error:
El Promielocito no presenta granulación secundaria, por lo tanto, en la representación visual deberian ser los tres iguales, no de diferente coloración (que es la granulación secundaria que recien aparece en los Mielocitos). Si bien es cierto que se les puede llamar de esa forma, porque darán origen a cálulas maduras diferentes, eso no significa que manifiesten estos gránulos. Los unicos gránulos presentes en este tipo de célula son gránulos de tipo Azurófilo, es decir, granulación primaria.

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

@Helper201 The reason is very simple: to categorize File:Brianna Beach 04.jpg in Category:Female human breasts is an over-categorization, as all photos contained in Category:Front views of nude standing women show their breasts. But Category:Front views of nude standing women is not a subcategory of Category:Female human breasts or vice versa. Also there is no rule that the category Category:Female human breasts must only show breasts and not the entire woman. That is not how other categories work. Hello re the circulatory system file and others relating to the Veins and Arteries - these files were changed by you, renaming the Femoral vein to Subsartorial or superficial femoral vein - the accepted and recognised use is of just the Femoral vein see page for example. On other pages the accepted term of Superficial femoral artery has been changed to Subsartorial or superficial - the recognised usage is of Superficial femoral artery.
