Hello, Fir0002!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Profile size and activity criterion for Commons:Meet our photographers[edit]

Dear member of Commons:Meet our photographers,

Two issues have recently been raised at Commons talk:Meet our photographers:

Profile size creep
The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.
Activity criterion
It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Bidgee (talk) 11:02, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Camera equipment program[edit]

Hi Fir0002, last year Wikimedia Australia developed the wmau:Proposal:Camera equipment program and we budgeted for a grant application from yourself in this financial year as you have already met many of the conditions of this grant scheme. It is great to see that you've returned, and I hope you'll seriously consider undertaking the prereq. metadata work and applying for this grant. Bidgee is the only applicant so far, and his grant application was approved recently. Bidgee and WMAU committee members are often on IRC channel #wikimedia-au and we can help you with the prereq and grant application. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:25, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John, thanks for bringing this to my attention. JJ Harrison also sent me an email bringing the program to my attention. I have to say I'm extremely flattered that you had budgeted for an application from me, and I think it's a terrific idea that Wikimedia Australia has initiated, but I'm not sure at this stage whether I should proceed with an application -> I'll continue the thought in the discussion Kaldari has linked below. Cheers, --Fir0002 www 10:54, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GFDL + CC-BY-SA-NC[edit]

Hi Fir,

I stumbled on this standard license template Template:GFDL or cc-by-nc-sa. Would that suit your future needs concerning the license change we have discussed recently and previously? Or do you want to stick to the some specific version number for the licenses? --Slaunger (talk) 18:06, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK. I guess for the GFDL it should be 1.2. Which version of the CC-BY-SA-NC? I see some, like Grand-duc does this sort of thing in user space, but I would like a template namespace solution for the license alone. --Slaunger (talk) 11:04, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry for dragging my feet - I know I promised this week but I forgot the Australian Open is on now ;) Anyway I'm quite happy with the current NC licence so I'd be wanting GFDL 1.2 and CC-BY-SA-NC 3.0. --Fir0002 www 12:34, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh incidentally, if I were to go for this WMF grant thing I'll have to do a bunch of geocoding - is your bot able to apply the geocode of Swifts Creek whenever it finds that word in the description? --Fir0002 www 10:55, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well almost all those files are taken around my parent's property and the others are also nearby (within a 10km squared accuracy) so it will be a case of modifying the exceptions of the general rule. --Fir0002 www 12:34, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it, please read the text above again and follow the links in it,if you still need help ask at the ? ->Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 11:40, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Bot task[edit]

Hi Fir,

I have just been enjoying a cold glass of Chardonnay from Southeast Australia, "Ed's Creek" while gathering some data regarding your photos and our job. The results are here (add to watchlist):

I guess these lists of files should define the scope of work more or less. I suggest we gather our work there and communicate back and forth.

Cheers (literally), --Slaunger (talk) 21:16, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How very appropriate :) How did you come by the bottle way out in Denmark? Anyway bot page is looking great, I've just added a small request on the talkpage. THanks again for your assistance by the way! --Fir0002 www 04:27, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Danes drink a lot of wine. Every household in Denmark spends an amount equivalent with 610 ASD on wine/year, and among the countries we import from, Australia is ranked fourth (after France, Italy and Chile). So not so unusal here... Concerning your small request, is it the one you placed on my talk page a few days ago? Do you want me to generate a list of all file pages, which are not geocoded? --Slaunger (talk) 07:17, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see, that is a considerable amount! I hadn't realised Australian wines were so popular overseas... Anyway It would appear I forgot to save the page -> I had actually written something on the bot talkpage. But yes, essentially what I'm looking for is a link beside each file on the list to directly edit the file description page (so eg http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Rooster_portrait02_dec08.jpg&action=edit). Also it'd be good if you could generate two lists for me - the files which you have done a batch geocode using default Swifts Creek values, and a second list with all other non-geocoded files. Thanks again for your help in all of this -> from now on as you suggested I'll continue the discussion on the bot talkpage... --Fir0002 www 05:37, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
AutoWikiBrowser could probably do this without Slaunger's direct input. JJ Harrison (talk) 05:43, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some new stuff on the bot page. Direct edit links. I also generated a list of all the files you have uploaded, but which do not transclude a user template. I guess most of them are edits of others works, but I compiled the list just in case you had forgotten to add the template on some of your own works. I also initiated a task list. A couple of ideas: I could let the bot check if a file page is geolocated, has the Information template, or needs categorization and mark it with letters, like G, I, C for your convenience. I have noticed many of your image pages do not have the Information template. I think it would be possible for me to add the info already in the file pages and embed it in an information template. Now that we are at it... --Slaunger (talk) 09:56, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Downsampling images[edit]

Hey, I just came across the January discussion regarding down-sampling images taken with equipment purchased via grants. Just to clarify, I do not downsample any images taken with the lens purchased with the grant; you can check my images taken with the 100-400mm lens. --Muhammad (talk) 11:23, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Muhammad - thanks for dropping the note. I guess in the context of that discussion (being mainly on eligibility for a grant - vs practice after getting a grant) I was just referring to the fact you were successful in your application despite adopting more or less the same uploading practice that I have prior to your application... Cheers, --Fir0002 www 13:57, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bad filenames[edit]

A few years back, you uploaded two files which you named "Before.jpg" and "After.jpg" -- they're meant to depict the difference that Photoshop filters can make. For the sake of comprehensibility and usefulness, I'd like to ask that you give these better, more descriptive file names (did you know that "Before.jpg" and "Before.JPG" are of completely different subjects? So are "After.jpg" and "After.JPG"!). And you know what the photo was, where it was taken, etc. I could probably identify it with a bit of research, but that would take time... "Taken with..." conflict[edit]

Some of your photographs incorrectly ended up in Category:Taken with Canon EF 85mm F1.8 USM - this category is now filled with macro shots like File:Black house spider.jpg that don't belong to the 85/1.8 pool.

You're using two personalized templates for each image. One template (User:Fir0002/150 credits) says "taken with Sigma 150/2.8", another (User:Fir0002/credits) says "taken with Canon 85/1.8". May I recommend removing lens/camera info from User:Fir0002/credits altogether - it's just a general copyright tag. ??? Kaluga.2012 (talk) 06:57, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriately Licensed[edit]

You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 23:01, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fir0002, don't you think it's a bit inappropriate to take a stand in this discussion due to your conflict of interest? Whatever justifications you may have, the fact remains that you financially benefit from the current licensing loophole. That seems like a pretty clear conflict of interests to me. Kaldari (talk) 20:32, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What a bizarre comment. I suppose everyone who has uploaded GFDL content should also be barred from the discussion because they have a conflict of interest? Great way to win an argument... --Fir0002 www 01:49, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
+1 --Alchemist-hp (talk) 11:37, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
-1. The key issue is not that you used GFDL, but that you have a strong interest in monetizing your contributions and want to prevent free reuse of your images. --Dschwen (talk) 15:15, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I invited Fir0002. His argument (loss of content) is a reasonable one but Commons has already decided on a huge loss of content by not accepting all-rights-reserved "for Wikipedia only" licences, or not accepting "non-commercial" licences. So it is a very weak argument indeed, though it was a very commonly made argument in the discussion. I think a lot of people would prefer if WP/Commons accepted such licences and are only interested in illustrating the Wikipedia website or collecting images they didn't pay for. I respect that opinion, even if it isn't compatible with WP/Commons mission to create free content.
Fir0002 is a contributor here so has a right to comment at any discussion, particularly those that affect him. At least I can understand his argument and it has some rational basis, which is more than can be said for many of the other comments. Colin (talk) 15:56, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree: This image is not eligible for WikiCommons (and hence also not for QIC), as the commercial use is excluded. --Cccefalon 20:27, 23 April 2016 (UTC) *  Comment This pic has an additional GFDL V 1.2-License too. --Hubertl 20:33, 23 April 2016 (UTC) * Does not make sense, but I was explained, that it is ok with two licenses. --Cccefalon 20:38, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Moved from user page[edit]

Where can I find your email address? And visting your website doesn't seem to lead anywhere. I just want to ask something about one of your photos which I would like to use. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hagglesworth (talk • contribs) 20:28, 11 October 2016‎ (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Hagglesworth: Special:EmailUser/Fir0002 is enabled. However, the user's lack of contributions in the past 3+ years does not inspire confidence. Perhaps a public question (or a private one to me) would yield a quicker response.   — Jeff G. ツ 14:56, 20 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Image Permission/Updated Website Link Request[edit]

Hi There,

I would like to write to you to request permission for the use of one of your images. Flagstaffotos.com.au is no longer a personal site. I have tried your gmail address, too. Do you have a new website or other way of connecting you can share? Thank you! --Xtineburrough (talk) 16:56, 20 May 2019 (UTC) xb[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
