I help Commons in a variety of ways as an Administrator, Bureaucrat, and CheckUser and by creating and uploading images, mostly lighthouses and sites on the National Register of Historic Places. These include

Commons really does work as a source of images for the world.

I also find and upload other useful images, mostly lighthouses.

Professionally, I've been a high-tech entrepreneur for a long time. As part of that I have done a lot of copyright work, licensing in and out from and to the USA, Europe, and Japan. I learned programming in CORC on a Burroughs 220 -- a vacuum tube computer -- and have programmed in Assembler, Fortran and BASIC on a wide variety of hardware over the years, both professionally and for my own use.

Most of my graphic arts knowledge comes from being one of the four founders of Iris Graphics in 1985. Iris made the first successful color printer used for proofing in the printing industry. I started working with vector graphics (AutoCAD) in 1985 and raster graphics (mostly Corel Photo-Paint) around 1990.

I started as a photographer with a Brownie Hawkeye in the late fifties. I soon graduated to a Ricoh 35mm rangefinder camera. A friend occasionally let me borrow his Kodak Retina IIIC. While in high school and college, I used a variety of older small, medium, and large format cameras, including a Leica IIIg, several 4x5 view cameras and a 2¼x3¼ Graflex single lens reflex. I bought my first Nikon F while in college, where I did free-lance professional photography as well as working for the yearbook and another a few years later. Subsequently, I have used a Sinar 4x5 view, two Mamyia Universal Press 6x9, several Crown and Speed Graphics in both 2¼x3¼ and 4x5, three Nikon F3, two Nikon F4, a Nikon D1, and now a Nikon D7100 as well as several point and shoots and mobile phones. I have taken pictures in sixty countries, on all continents except Antarctica.

My wife, Dee, and I have been sailing together for fifty years, including both a circumnavigation and a later trip across the Atlantic. We went to Cape Breton Island in summer 2015 and the Bay of Fundy in 2016, up the Hudson River in 2017, and a 5,200 mile trip up the Saint Lawrence River through 40 locks to all five Great Lakes in 2018. Our 2022 trip took us up the Hudson again, west on the Erie Canal, north on the Oswego Canal, across Lake Ontario, down the Saint Lawrence River to the Richelieu River, up the Richelieu and through the Chambly Canal to Lake Champlain, and down the Chaplain Canal to the Hudson. 1300 miles and 59 locks. We both hold Master's Licenses. I raced actively for 25 years. My wife and I are both members of the Cruising Club of America.

We're also railfans, and have railfanned on all the continents where there are railroads. That has included travel or photography on eleven different rail gauges and three dual gauges, and having driven both steam and diesel locomotives.

I belong to the school of "different ships, different long splices" -- there is almost always more than one way to do something on a ship -- and much prefer a balanced point of view both in action and in writing.

The flags shown are the courtesy flags we flew in places visited by sea, not necessarily the national flag.
Flying over a jurisdiction does not count, but traveling through by railroad, boat, or car does.
The layout is adapted from en:User:Niagara, thank you.
