Would you mind discussing instead of reverting a DR that is involving new arguments compare to the previous one ?! --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 11:28, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing clear. In the first DR, there were no argument. Just your own decision. You may know the rules about DR : it's possible to launch another one when there is a new argument. You seem not to understand the French law, or you might be right about the first decision. But it has to be discussed and it might not be up to you to close the debate again. And please don't threaten me. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 11:32, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Translation issue[edit]

Hello

I am working on Commons:WLA and have an issue. I have moved the main page of WLAf2014 to Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014. But the translations in various languages are still "attached" to the original page Commons:Wiki Loves Africa. How to "move" the translations so that they stay with the original page ? Anthere (talk)

After discussion with a translation Admin, the solution might be to start by deleting Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2014. Can you do that please ? Anthere (talk) 18:17, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is solved now. :-) Romaine (talk) 19:55, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Denniss. You have protected the Flag of Azerbaijan from editing in 2012. In 2013 there was some changes in colors of the flag according to the Law sighned by the president of Azerbaijan (see the full text of the Law on the official website of the President of Azerbaijan). Could you please remove protection from the file? I will upload new version with changed colors and then you can put protection again. Regards, Interfase (talk) 06:42, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We are in the zero to ten years, so we still use the two apostrophes are correct, commons is an archive, it must be used a file language in perspective over time. For now it does not matter, leave them as they are, but for the next time you hear my words: D if you want to discuss it. thank you.. About Leonor Anthony[edit]

I was working with this post also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Leonor_Anthony and notice that someone else was able to public the full information, but then I saw it this week, everything was down and found this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leonor_Anthony.jpeg... can you please explain ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abrahamsahad (talk • contribs) 17:06, 05 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An image posted to Twitter (the given source) does not indicate that it is 'freely licensed' according to Commons policies. You need an image with an explicit license statement. Merely stating that it's 'somewhere on her Twitter feed' is not sufficient.Revent (talk) 06:12, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File:Plaque to W.H. Auden, Brooklyn Heights 01 (9420506021).jpg[edit]

Hi Denniss. My understanding is that 3.0 updates and replaces 2.0, so there would be no relevance in having both. Am I wrong - is there some advantage to having both? Are there protections under 2.0 which are not given in 3.0? Or is it a case that folks may select which license they prefer to apply, and may reuse under 2.0 even though 3.0 would not permit it? SilkTork (talk) 07:59, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Only the copyright holder may upgrade the license version. And 3.x does not replace 2.x, in general this kind of autoupgrade doesn't exist in any CC license although 4.x makes this easier. Plus the older version remains valid even if it was removed or upgraded.--Denniss (talk) 08:40, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Denniss!

I uploaded a new version of this file but you reverted to original version. Now I'm mid 40s Korean. When Chung Ho Yong was minister of South Korea I was a college student.

I think this figure is not Chung Ho Yong. Face is not similar to him. If you search him via Google you can find his real face as follows.

Hello, I uploaded the aboved named photo from Flickr [3] Everything looks ok, the CC-by-SA-2.0 license is still on it. But at the edit summary at [4] it says that you deleted the file, because the uploader there is on the "bad authors list". Can you fill me in on this? I've never heard of this before. Where does this list exist, so I can be sure not to waste my time on such "bad authors"?

Heya Smallbones: It looks as if Denniss might be on weekend or RL for past few days, there's several unattended messages which is most unlike him. The "bad authors" thing occurs when someone uploads a pile of dubious images to flickr. On a quick review, I don't see what would have pushed that account over the edge, but none of use know what the other one does, so let's wait for Denniss! Nice to see you again, sorry it seems to always be over deletions; never hesitate to leave me a message. Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:11, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Another TekkenJinKazama sock[edit]

Thanks for the comments on the TekkenJinKazama SPI on EN. When Cirt filed the report with Iggy488 as a possible sock, I did some digging using Jin's two most current accounts. Derevation was blocked on October 2nd and you just blocked MahnOfSteel, but they each added an image of a signature to two different articles and the images were uploaded here by Indian Karl Marx. That's an old sock of TJK's, blocked on EN since May 2014. He was causing some trouble over here with copyright violations so the socks were getting caught over here as well (and sometimes here first). Up to you if you want to block here or keep it around as a canary. *sigh* If they'd listen to the feedback they'd be a productive editor in an area where more are needed, but they've chosen a different path. Thanks, Ravensfire (talk) 20:53, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can you remove the edit protection of that file? Upload protection is only needed. Edit protection prevents the file from adding/removing categories. Thanks! --Pokéfan95 (talk) 10:03, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, disregard this. Didn't notice that the edit protection is "Allow only autoconfirmed users". Pokéfan95 (talk) 10:07, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

While your closing of this DR was in favour of my vote, I cannot agree with the wording of your rationale: The fact that you do not understand Spanish doesn’t mean that the request was «nonsense». Indeed it is very evidently a case of a well meaning, unexperienced photographer / promoter / agent wanting to replace his client’s photo in Wikipedia with a professional shot. With proper guidance (which I attempted in the DR) we could have now all three photographs, leaving to Wikipedia users the choice which one to use, and we’d have educated one more professional about free media. Like this, it simply looks like that Spanish language is not suitable for deletion request discussions. A better rationale would have been something like «Declined courtesy deletion; please upload alternative image with proper permissions and let Wikipedia editors chose.» Also in this file deletion you could have been more helpful, stating that copyright ownership needs to be substantiated for this photo, not merely quoting COM:L — looks like that we overlooked his own-work claim instead of expecing him to produce proper evidence for it. -- Tuválkin 11:54, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

SC Group image deletions[edit]

Dear Denniss, please read and enter into Talk before random arbitrary deletion of images. If you had taken the time to do even the first of those two things before your SC Group image deletions you would see I am learning on Wikipedia and am in current discussion with user Yann on the correct way to post the permission I clearly have or can get for these images. There was no need to delete them so abruptly.--UndateableOne (talk) 20:40, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete this DR? It seemed a reasonable enough request to me, and something which would benefit the user from an actual response as to why we want to keep it. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:35, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request[edit]

Hi, could you undelete and raise a DR for File:Male erect penis.jpg (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) with an explanation of why the file is now out of scope in your view? As I recall the original file has been on Commons since 2009, even if the uploader has uploaded a newer version, so a deletion request is the norm. Thanks -- (talk) 22:14, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop reverting my factual correction to the category description. Furthermore, threatening to block me for no reason is uncivil and would also be an abuse of administrator privileges if you actually did it (because we have a disagreement over content). So can you please start communicating civilly instead and explain why you disagree with my edit? Thank you. — Yerpo Eh? 16:36, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He still is the 43rd US president. A block for something bordering vandalism and edit warring is always justified. --Denniss (talk) 16:57, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd personally say "was" is the more appropriate word to use here. Failing that, go see what enwp say and copy that. -mattbuck (Talk) 17:07, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, he isn't the 43rd US president. "43rd US president" is a subset of "US president", which he is not anymore. In any case, this is a dispute over grammar between two non-native speakers (=not even close to any definition of vandalism) and you were closer to edit warring than me, providing absolutely no justification for your revert and then even threatening me. An apology would be in order, I think. — Yerpo Eh? 17:30, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
He's not the currently active president but he still is the 43rd President of the USA. So he was active/ruling/whatever President of the USA but still is the 43rd US president. There's nothing wrong stating he's the 43rd president. --Denniss (talk) 22:01, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
BBC disagrees, as do The New York Times, Britannica and Biography.com (*). Or do you consider yourself a bigger authority on the English language? Even ignoring all that, you acted extremely hostile towards my good-faith edit from your position of power, for which I'm still waiting for an apology. — Yerpo Eh? 07:39, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
* Note: it is still possible to find articles stating "Bush is the 43rd president", but those are usually dated from before his term ended.

Seeing that you made no further objection to my argument in several days, I understand this as a (silent) agreement. Therefore, I intend to change the category description again, to be factually correct, but your threat is still hanging over this issue and at least clarifying your current position would be welcome. Thank you. — Yerpo Eh? 13:02, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just have a look at en wiki article intro - served as 43rd president is factually correct. 'was' implies he's dead.--Denniss (talk) 13:23, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Again, numerous reliable sources use 'was', so your hunch about what it implies is wrong. But as a consensual solution, "served as" would also be an acceptable form to me. Ok? — Yerpo Eh? 13:52, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Was" sounds more natural to me. As far as formal grammar is concerned, the rule is to "avoid tense shift."[5] For example, a story should be told in the past tense all the way through. Just because something is still true doesn't mean you need to put it in the present tense. Gulangyu (talk) 00:26, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Confused about some deletions[edit]

A question by Eurofan88 at the upload help page led me to check the user's deleted contributions, and I saw that you'd deleted several Flickr-sourced images as copyvios, such as File:Future 2013.jpg and File:Trinidad James 2013 August.jpg. Why did you delete them? Both images' Flickr pages bear Commons-acceptable licenses, the deleted images are the same as the images on Flickr (it's not like an image was uploaded with a different image as its supposed source), and the listed photographer is apparently associated with the organisation that put the images on Flickr, so I don't see any potential licensing problems or other reasons to delete these or related images. Nyttend (talk) 19:55, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unnecessary deletion[edit]

Hello Dennis, recently you deleted some of my images which I uploaded, I accept that many of them were having some copyright issues but the 2 files: 1) File:Holkar-Stadium-Indore-and-Indore-Skyline.jpg and 2) File:Crystal-IT-Park-Indore.jpg were also deleted by you. May I please know why you deleted them. Both of the images belong to me and yet were given to me by their owners, also, none of them holds any copyright tag. If you found any of those images anywhere else, please tell me. And I also want you to re-upload both the images.

This report caused a crash (apparently), it's unclear why after such a long history of running without a problem that the queries became long to run. It's been set so that queries cannot run in parallel. As a user of the report, if you notice a loss of utility from the lag between image overwrites and the report being updated getting too long, do drop me a note. Why must you do this?...[edit]

Wow, that was sure a mature thing to do! I want to talk this out the civilized way, but you just delete my section. You're a German, weren't you guys supposed to be "civilized"? Look, I don't know what is your problem with my country, and honestly I don't even care. But there are things that my country did, good, helpful things, that I want to be recognized for all their worth. Like us making those planes in World War 1. Or like Dumitrescu being acknowledged among the Commanders during Operation Uranus. Seriously though, why do you even take all the Commander posts during Uranus? It's not even you who took the brunt of the offensive, it's us! Besides, without us and our oil, you wouldn't have been getting there in the first place! Even the German Wiki has the common sense to mention Dumitrescu and Constantinescu in the Commander box. Why you don't want this common sense to also be here, on the English Wiki, I have no idea! As for the Maresal, well, the Hetzer would definately not exist without it. The first Maresal was made in July 1943 while the first Hetzer in March 1944. And the way you copied it was also cheap, moving the cannon to the side in order to make your ripping-off less blatant. Honestly, that's pitiful. You ruined our wonderful design for your selfishness. And even if you are against me telling the truth about the Hetzer, why did you even modify the Maresal article? As if you stealing the design from us would not be bad enough, now you also want to have as little information about the Maresal as possible! Just...why? You know, Romania is among the top 25 contributors to the English Wiki, and in a few days it's our National Day. I think it would be a great gift for you to recognize our merits, our rightfully earned achievements. Just...give Romania what is Romania's or at least don't stop a Romanian from doing it. Please...it's the only thing I'm asking you!

Greetings! Could you, please rename this file to Military Flag of Finland as per correct name? Can not doit myself as the file is protected by you. Also the description needs to be changed accordingly. Sincerely, --Kwasura (talk) 22:37, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think we need this change. The official designation is the "State Flag" (sv:statsflaggan, fi:Valtiolippu) as I read in the the relevant law. There is no official and separate military flag in this legislation. Also the current description of the file seems to be exhaustive by explaining how the flag is used apart from being the naval ensign. De728631 (talk) 22:55, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, the official designation for this particular flag is the Kielekkeinen valtiolippu, literally - Tonged state frag (s opposite to rectangular state flag). Tonged state frag without the charge in the canton is reserved for the Finnish Military. Every Finnish military formation, command or institution, not having it's own flag, use the "Tonged state frag" (Air force HQ, for example). So, as you can see, this is not so Naval Ensign how the Military Flag of Finland. But, if you prefer literal translation, then, yes, flag needs to be named Tonged state frag of Finland. Sincerely, --Kwasura (talk) 00:00, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If at all, it should be the "Three-tailed state flag of Finland". The adjective "tounged" seems to be a too close translation of the original and there are a lot of book sources writing about "three-tailed" flags in English [6], [7], [8]. And surely it's not a frag. Anyhow, this discussion should be continued at the file's talk page and not here in Denniss' backyard. De728631 (talk) 01:13, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I wasn't expecting not discussion rather then with Deniss. But thank you for joining anyway. I hope Deniss will break his silence soon. It is obvious that Finns doesn't like to call it "tails". Even in Germanic language it's still "Tretungade statsflag". Why flag can't be just called "Military" for what it is? --Kwasura (talk) 04:48, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You!

  • Indeed, it seems like you have protected the wrong version for two reasons:
Firstly, because neither of the two seems to be exactly the version Da'esh primarily uses. (Whether it's the version AQMI uses, remains unclear.)
Secondly, in doubt and without any discussion, the last version of the original uploader needs to be protected, especially as it has been used for three years, while the other questionable versions only have been around since December.
Therefore I'm asking you to revert the file to the original version and leave the rest to a discussion on the Talk page. Thanks, PanchoS (talk) 22:27, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Denniss: whichever flag version you decide to protect/keep, please ensure that the centre seal is white and not transparent, as letters cannot float in mid-air of flags, and it may appear not as intended in different UIs. The version I last contributed replaced this transparency with white, and is otherwise identical in appearance to the one you are protecting now. I have no opinion over whether that flag, or a different version, is more correct - apart from the transparency issue. Thank you. --BurritoBazooka (talk) 17:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Even older images may be valuable so for a different image you should always create a new separate file at Commons. The problem is though that all our files need to be free to use and the image you uploaded had no author and no own free licence. So unless we know who is the original photographer and where the file comes from we cannot keep it. De728631 (talk) 21:53, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dennis, thank you for taking the time and point to the licensing thing (or the lack of it actually), I'm relative new to wikis on general and quite naive when it comes to legal understanding so I'm burning my brain on this. Should I send an email attaching the "Declaration of consent for all enquiries" to the guy in the picture (he has the copyright after all) and ask him to send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org or just fill it with his name and send it back myself to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I know this is maybe a silly thing to ask but I only have 7 days left before he goes to Cuba and contact him will be difficult.

I'm sorry, if i did something wrong, but when you tagged those two pictures, that i upload and asked me to send the written permission - i did that exactly for those two files.

As I understood, I should not do that for all the uploaded files, - am I right?

Working now at the creation of the article in Wikipedia, I checked all my other uploaded files and found that all of them are deleted:

  • File:MPW - sunset.png
  • File:MPW - scene.png
  • File:MPW - shooting process.jpg
  • File:MPW - interaction2.jpg

Thanks for letting me know that I had not given adequate permission for the image I uploaded of Jeffrey Ehrlich. It is a cropped version of a photograph that I took personally.

Files being deleted by Jcb[edit]

Denniss, this is Scott mate. I've had a look through some of Jcb's logs and have found that he has been outright deleting in-scope content which has been uploaded by myself, or CC licensing has been organised by me.

I firmly believe that the minute one starts deleting in-scope, freely licensed content, the entire mission of Commons is lost and the project becomes nothing more than a MMORPG. Unfortunately, with Jcb's deletions, this MMORPG is now evident.

Could you please undelete the following files, categories and templates; as many of the files are in use externally and also some were in use on WMF projects. Any empty categories will be dealt with very quickly.

I also notice that Jcb has revdelled a ton of edits on files, dunno why it is serious overkill, but could you look at Commons:WikiProject Aviation/Outreach/Organisations and possibly un-revdel those edits, they are needed for that project and for outreach activities that others are undertaking.

Cheers

(talk page stalker) I haven't had time to go through this quite extensive list yet, however I did go through the revdeleted edits at Commons:WikiProject Aviation/Outreach/Organisations and I have to say I am quite flabbergasted as to why they were deleted since there is nothing wrong or incorrect with those edits that I can see. I think it gravely concerning that an administrator would delete such constructive edits seemingly without any reason, and I would love to hear from @Jcb why he did so. odder (talk) 21:31, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I remember Fastily's courtesy deletions back in 2014 (was on AN(/U?) one header below my first edit to that board) caused a bit of drama, and I'd like to reuse an argument; The photographer can now go to Getty Images if they'd like and demand that reusers pay up and it would be very hard for said reusers to refute these charges, since we have deleted our copies of said images without reason. If they are to be kept deleted, at least use the deletion logs to add a comment such as "licensing issues", or "out of scope". Deleteion without reason is not ok, ever. Why this is held here and not on AN, or why Mr. Bibby didn't send an email to ca@wikimedia.org, I don't know, but the issue remains just as valid. Josve05a (talk) 23:08, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've checked the undeletion pages of quite some of these files and also examined the revdelled edits, and it seems that they were all uploaded/edited by various Russavia socks. So my first guess is that this is the reason why Jcb deleted them. De728631 (talk) 23:26, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@De728631: Well that is, to the best of my knowledge, not a valid reason for (speedy) deletion. Josve05a (talk) 23:59, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We have had an extensive discussion at the AN a while ago about WMF banned Russavia still using socks to create those dubious general permission templates. The clear instruction from the WMF was not to accept any Russavia contribution. Period. I know some users are still willing to support Russavia in his contributions. There is only one answer to that: Don't. Jcb (talk) 11:16, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jcb: Deleting files whiteout providing a valid reason in the log summary is a violation of the deletion policy, apart from that the permission for the files in question seems to be valid. You violated speedy deletion policy as well. And there is no consensus to delete files uplaoded by russavia. It looks to me like you are deleting the file to make a COM:POINT. Please revert your deletions asap. I am inclined to restore the file because they have been deleted in violation of the deletion policyes, and the deletion is controversial therefore a COM:DR is needed. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:33, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I will use the summary in future cases. I'm not going to revert an action that was demanded by WMF. Please contact WMF if you disagree with their ruling in this case. Jcb (talk) 11:35, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Then, if it is demanded by the WMF they'll use an office action, which is allowed per the speedy deletion policy. You however are not allowed to enact office actions, and therefore there is no rationale per the policy for you to delete them under. You either need WMF to delete them, or start a DR, because you are violating every deletion policy on record here (in scope images, with valid licenses deleted for no allowed rationale. DOesn't sound so good). Josve05a (talk) 11:41, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jcb: You deleted files without giving a reason in the log summary, which is a violation if the deletion policy. You also haven't provided a link to the AN discussion. I am asking you again to restore the files and start a formal deletion request as required by our local project policyes. I don't care who uploaded the file, you deleted valid content. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:42, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
At Commons talk:Criteria for speedy deletion/Archive_1#Content_added_while_evading_a_block_or_ban is consensus that such content can't be speedydeleted. We shouldn't remove perfectly licensed files just because a Russavia (or a other banned) uploaded them. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:36, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • (Another (talk page stalker)) Odder, I'm eager to know whether there is any progress in handling global bans (or whatever people call it) together by CA and COM:OV team as you did at FDMS4's case? My understanding from old comments is that it is not clear whether you can extend it to existing bans. If that is the case, people need to accept it and move on without disrupting this project. On the other hand, if you can work together to find a solution for old cases, me (and I hope most of the community members) are willing to accept it. Anyway, I suggest you and all other OV/CU/Crats to stay away from these types of nonsense repeating frequently and leave it to ordinary admins (and there freewill) until we've a formal solution. This is not a serious issue that affecting "the entire mission of Commons". Jee 02:23, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jee: Well, I think it worth clarifying first that the FDM4 case was not an example of a global ban but a local interaction ban between two Commons users. I announced it on Commons as neither the oversight team or regular Commons administrators have the ability to enforce any action outside this project; however, as you can see, the Foundation intended to enforce it off-Commons, so that's that. As for any global bans, and in particular the ban on Russavia, there has been no progress that I'm aware of; the last I heard was that @James planned to bring this idea to users who complained about Russavia's alleged misconduct, but I don't know about anything that might have happened after that. odder (talk) 14:22, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks odder for the updates. The similarity is when we execute an interaction ban or ban, we expect the user need to obey it irrespective his intentions in case by case. So we expect users should not break the interaction ban even if it is with good intentions. Similarly we expect users should not break a ban even if intention is good. Now LX provided a link where conclusion is "Clearly but weirdly, consensus is that unlike on Wikipedia, blocked users are pretty much free to edit with impunity using sock puppets." Hmm; I don't care if this is the approved policy here. But it must be amended at Commons:Blocking policy before arguing with Jcb. It's not admin's ability to search all previous discussions; it should be documented. (Note: Fae is adding replies on my every comments as earlier. I'm neglecting it, now onward.) Jee 15:09, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jcb: Please kindly revert all of your deletion of the files above. You are clearly violating the deletion policy. Also, just because all of those are uploaded by Russavia, it means they took them. Those are taken by different photographers. Also, they are in Commons' scope, so there is really no reason to delete those files. Why doesn't the WMF deleted those files already as they banned Russavia? Use the uncommon common sense please. Poké95 11:58, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care if we handle every blocked users uniformly. Started a discussion at Commons talk:Blocking policy. Jee 13:09, 22 January 2016 (UTC) And this too. Jee 13:34, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than forum shopping, please consider finishing one discussion before launching two more. It only creates drama. Thanks -- (talk) 14:28, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
He’s not the only admin doing that: Here’s one example. -- Tuválkin 23:32, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Background comment: As well as working with Russavia to upload around 100,000 aviation related images before the WMF office lock on his account for undisclosed reasons, on Russavia's recent suggestion I have been in correspondence with ETH (the largest scientific library in Zurich) to coordinate uploading of SwissAir's archives. This is now planned to be done as part of a chapter project, independently of Russavia as far as I am aware. Pointy deletions of good test images and initial categories that support these batch uploading projects but may or may not have been done by Russavia, certainly do damage Commons, they certainly damage the trust of the institutions working with us, who are under the impression that their good faith work will not be used as political pawns in local gamesmanship.

Similarly as the most active current batch uploader, these revenge deletions which erode my past projects, damage my confidence that volunteer time spent crafting custom upload programmes, and making images available with intelligent categorisation and explanatory project pages, will be respected by future Commons administrators, rather than binned due to someone with the tools having an "emotional day".

If Jcb wants to hide under a desk rather than come forward properly to explain themselves and revert their actions, then I agree with Denniss and would support a desysop vote as they are not competent to handle sysop powers. -- (talk) 12:42, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jcb has stated:

We have had an extensive discussion at the AN a while ago about WMF banned Russavia still using socks to create those dubious general permission templates. The clear instruction from the WMF was not to accept any Russavia contribution.

This is not true! The relevant discussion from the OTRS wiki (licensed under CC-BY-SA) is here. Philippe Beaudette stated:

Russavia is not welcome to upload to our sites, so there should be no reason for new copyright assignments, correct? I think there's no harm in accepting them, but I don't want to legitimize his participation. Downplay.  :-) Philippe (WMF) (talk) 21:33, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

The relevant phrase here is DOWNPLAY.

What Jcb is doing is not downplaying, but destroying valid content as others above has said he is doing to.

Furthermore, Jcb has stated that I am creating "dubious" licencing templates. Sorry to be so blunt, but that is bullshit!!!!!! All of my permissions have been verified by the OTRS team; in the instances above they were done by Base.

In fact, Template:Vitaly saw the photographer himself contributing to the template by adding his full name, etc. How in hell can Jcb sit there and say with a straight face that the licencing I have organised is dubious. That is a fucking insult to almost everything I have done over a period of many years on this project.

If there is an admin who is able to simply undelete these IN-USE images above that would be great!

As Jcb will likely remove this, and perhaps even revdel these comments, I am pinging editors above so they are aware of these comments being present here: Odder, Josve05a, Steinsplitter, Denniss, , Pokéfan95 — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 88.207.210.37 (talk) 17:46, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If Jcb will revdel any of these comments or continues to delete Russavia's files, I will move this discussion to COM:AN/U. Any objections? Poké95 12:19, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to invite Yann (since he kept a DR that was opened by a sock of Russavia) and Rodhullandemu (since he was blocking the IPs of Russavia) to participate in this discussion. Poké95 12:23, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • I want to leave a comment here because I know that multiple people (including Odder and Jcb) Have asked the WMF to weigh in. We expect to and planned to do so today however the spirits have conspired against us at this point (I have been sick in bed all day and Kalliope's work setting up the Harassment Survey results took more time then expected yesterday meaning we couldn't get everything ready. She also doesn't work Friday/Saturday (it's her weekend) and she's worked so many Friday's over the past couple months that, as a manager, I was not willing to try and get her back again for this. Jalexander-WMF I think, in light of recent events at WMF, the board's recent behaviour surrounding Doc James, the failures which occurred appointing Arnnon and the climate of fear which exists at WMF HQ, we really are going to have to press you for a more detailed explanation surrounding Russavia's ban, so we can at least consider whether it's fair, proportional and appropriate. I presumably don't need to remind you that we were promised a year ago that a proper explanation would be given to at least some members of the community and that you were looking at ways to make that happen, now that hasn't happened. We still need full and complete transparency surrounding this issue. Nick (talk) 10:45, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
+1 Thanks for reminding us of past promises Nick. It's been said many times before, but actions needed on Russavia's account would be much better if trusted to volunteers. If the office action were commuted to a block managed by the community, then we can deal with future appeals. This at least would then give a route for Russavia to become a reformed character rather than a permanent pariah by WMF imperial diktat with no possibility of accountability or appeal.
If there is any claim of harassment where details should be kept confidential, then this is a matter for volunteer oversight members. This type of legal oversight was originally intended to deal positively with promotion of paedophile material or other extreme criminal activities. As far as I am aware, or anyone else including Russavia, he has not committed any crimes that the police would want to investigate, nor has anyone else asserted that a crime has been committed. The only reason I can imagine that WMF legal are keen to avoid providing their evidence to Russavia or any other volunteer, is that the office lock was a result of Jimmy Wales bizarrely claiming that Russavia was sexually harassing him—and considering his recent appalling bullying childish behaviour, see "fucking bullshit" comments, he hardly needs special secret protection from WMF legal that the rest of us cannot rely on enjoying when we feel like it.
In the meantime, mantras like "banned means banned" imported from the English Wikipedia, are completely inappropriate as an excuse to ignore Russavia tidying up past projects by asking for deletions, or to blindly delete positive contributions just because they come from a suspected sock account. A key tenet of Commons has been that we should judge the value of a contribution by its content, not who created it. This distinction between Commons and the English Wikipedia is what makes this project a far more mellow space for volunteers to work together.

Since this is a contributor's talk page, the WMF has weighed in on this discussion, in the AN/UP board.Kalliope (WMF) (talk) 21:41, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting content has HUGE ramifications[edit]

Now that the WMF has weighed in via Kalliope (WMF) posting above, there are some issues that need to be raised in order for the community itself to understand exactly what the ramifications are.

1. If the WMF starts deleting content, they in essence are now curators of content, and would likely lose their Safe Harbour status. This is why they don't mind some in the community deleting outright uploads. Keep that in mind!

2. Jcb has deleted a HUGE number of files (outlined here)....many of which were in use both on WMF projects and externally. Any external re-users of that content are now in violation of the licensing terms, and he doesn't seem to care about that.

3. Some of the files deleted (by way of templates) had permission confirmed by other OTRS agents, who have simply followed Philippe Beaudette's instructions to "DOWNPLAY" the contributions -- accept the contribution because there's no harm, and downplay. In the case of one template the photographer himself had contributed to their template adding their full name. Yet these were deleted by Jcb.

4. Now that the WMF has weighed in, Jcb will likely be emboldened to delete yet more content because there will be no repercussions to him (at least from the WMF....the community is a different story). In case he is emboldened to so, I think some examples of the ramifications of this are needed.

In July 2015, the Russian Ministry of Defence made content on their website available under a Creative Commons licence. Inline with this, I created Template:Mil.ru. As a result of this, there is now almost 1,500 photos from Russian MoD on Commons (Category:Mil.ru) -- not all uploaded by myself. Deleting this template, will ensure that ALL of that media is also deleted.

Since September 2015, Russia has been active in Syria and there is a ton of media available. I have uploaded ALMOST ALL of the media which is now present in Category:Russian Forces in the Syrian Civil War (2011-present). There are 410 files, of which approximately 20% are in use on WMF projects -- this is wide usage!

The existence of this media on Wikimedia Commons has also lead to widespread usage of the media externally. For example, there is one site I know of (and which I am not connected with in any way, shape or form) which makes good use of the media (and other photos) I've uploaded. Here is a short list:

Other non-Syrian War related imagery which I have uploaded are also in use on the same site:

The links immediately above are dated only from 18 January to 30 January. There are hundreds more!!

What makes the above site an indicative case of how dangerous it is to delete content, is not only would it destroy their ability to abide by the licensing terms, but they also hotlink directly to the Commons image (which is totally allowable and all ok).

I have other examples of other sites making use of content, but I think ^ ^ should tell you all you need to know in terms of the ramifications.

The question is, is Jcb going to continue? He should, if he stays true to his words.

"Overwriting Images"[edit]

I believe you are being to strict on the rules of "overwriting images". The rules state a user is allowed to crop or enhance an image. Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Cropping There are many photos uploaded that need to be cropped to best serve the needs of their respective Wikipedia pages and you are deleting them. Please explain your reasoning behind this HesioneHushabye (talk) 06:14, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How can I change a photo that is outdate for Downtown Woodland page[edit]

You sent me this when I attempted to update a photo that was on a page about Downtown Woodland. This is what you replied with. "I noticed that you uploaded a file using the name File:DowntownWoodland.JPG. A file by this name already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you."

Could you advise me on how I can go about changing that picture to one that is more current please?

Thanks for your time

(talk page stalker) @Bluewing405: You may upload the newer version as a new file. And please sign your posts with ~~~~. And since you said that the image you are attempting to overwrite is outdated, you may request a universal replace at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands if the outdated file is used in many pages (or if not, replaced them by hand or use GlobalReplace). When blocking open proxies...[edit]

Don't forget to request a steward at meta:Steward requests/Global to globally block those open proxies. And it should be a hard block (where anonymous users and registered users of a IP are blocked), not a soft block (where anonymous users are blocked only), to prevent abuse. Thanks for helping in blocking open proxies! Poké95 06:06, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Denniss, can you please look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Temporary regional processing centre in Manus Island (8205490576).jpg and possibly undelete this photo. It is actually within scope of Manus Regional Processing Centre (Category:Manus Island Detention Centre). Faces are blurred for the privacy of the refugees. Given controversies around the foundation and operation of Manus Island, and Australia's insistence on keeping children in these detention centres, there would be scope for it. Hi Dennis, If you compare both images to this or this you'll see that's it's the same exact same vehicle ... just completely modified, Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 01:47, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Even if completely modified there are some basic structures you can't change. These look entirely different to a VW T2. Just compare front window and position of windscreen wiper between that vehicle and a T2. This is likely something french/italian as base vehicle. --Denniss (talk) 10:36, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest that was the first thing I noticed but I'm convinced it's a T2 .... the layout, windows, even the tyre's are the same, By some miracle I've found a video of the vehicle but it's not much help [10] (The uploader even calls it a VW), Anyway personally I still think it is a type 2 but edit warring won't get us no where so I guess it should be forever left under "Unidentified vehicles", Anyway thanks, –Davey2010Talk 16:50, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Willy Wenz - Portrait, Atelier, Feld[edit]

Hi Denniss, you asked me to give detailed information about the source of these three pictures. But nowhere at all the pages here I found something about my special case, which template would fit. (Along with it my English isn't good enough to understand all the special terminologies). The three pictures are coming originally from the family of the painter Willy Wenz. I bought them together with paintings and other stuff from the painter's sister 25 years ago. Meanwhile no-one of Willy Wenz's family is alive. The photographer(s) are unknown, probably long dead, the pictures older than 75 years. - Which source shall I state, which licence template shall I use ? Thanks for help.

30 day de-sysop[edit]

Hi Denniss,

This is a note to inform you that you have been de-sysoped by the WMF, for a limited period of 30 days, starting today. The reason for this action is your repeated attempts to prevent enforcing of a global ban, most recently through the edit reverts and subsequent blocks placed against Colin. Because of your valued contributions to the Wikimedia projects this is not a permanent action, and you will be welcome to continue your positive contributions as an editor.

Reinstatement of your admin rights will be possible through the RfA process, after the end of the 30 day period, and will obviously be subject to community approval at that time. Please note that preventing other editors from enforcing a global ban will not be tolerated moving forward, as per our recent statements. We hope to never have to do something like this again to you or anyone else. (a post about this has been made on the village pump as well) Jalexander--WMF 07:27, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • This was a bonehead move by the WMF police. There were many community based processes that could have been chosen, including having a meaningful discussion with the Bureaucrats, asking them to show leadership on the issues if you thought it was critical. You are playing 'dictatorship' rather than working with the community or showing any respect for our consensus driven policies. Denniss is one of the best and most productive admins here, you have not even tried talking it through before slapping him in the face for his commitment. -- (talk) 10:15, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deniss. Is there a reason why this file is protected citing "Highly visible" while other, arguably more visible files such as File:Flag of France.svg are not? Abjiklɐm (tɐlk) 06:12, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Abjiklam: Since Denniss is not very active now, I am answering this question. Denniss protected the file because it is in use in many pages in other wikis. See Special:GlobalUsage/Flag of Syrian Kurdistan.svg. Uploading over that file will consume a lot of system resources to replace all wiki pages that use the file with the new one. Imagine if that file was vandalized, and you reverted it, you will notice a slight slow down. And for the Flag of France, well yes, that should be protected too. Thanks, Poké95 06:22, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, it looks like Denniss also protected the file from editing, so I will request at COM:AN/P to remove edit protection, while keeping the upload protection. Also, the flag of France was protected too. Poké95 06:24, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Right I realised after that the difference is in editing the page, not uploading. That being said, I have an improvement for that file. How can I submit it for review? Abjiklɐm (tɐlk) 12:12, 8 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To submit an improvement for that file, upload it first in a website that accepts any uploads, then edit the talk page of the file, and put the link of the new version in the talk page. Don't forget to add {{Edit request}} on the talk page, to attract attention from administrators, then one of them will review your new version. After that, they will upload it over the existing file. -- burts 17:08, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Photos from Flickr[edit]

Can you explain me, why you delete photos from Flickr, even when is noticed author, source and licence? Why you, for example, don't delete other photos, like this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RecepTayyipErdo%C4%9Fan_(cropped).jpg

Everything is here written same as on my photos from Flickr which you immediately delete. You and other administrators. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Franjo Lozancic (talk • contribs) 19:50, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Don't upload images which are clearly marked with "all rights reserved" - no one is permitted to use such images here. Source images with non-commercial and non-derivative restrictions are not permitted either. If you continue to upload them using fake free copyright tags you'll face an account block. --Denniss (talk) 20:12, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

In the File:Time Zones of the Middle East.svg could you change the color for Northern Cyprus which followed Turkey thus reflecting the latest change, and could you also either get rid of the neighboring countries shaded in gray or include all of them? The map doesn't look aesthetically pretty with some of the neighboring countries missing in the map. It looks like a jigsaw puzzle missing its pieces.

Here are the sources for Northern Cyprus: http://famagusta-gazette.com/cyprus-will-have-two-time-zones-from-next-month-p36121-69.htm http://www.rte.ie/news/2016/0908/815258-turkey-daylight-saving/ http://www.news24.com/Green/News/turkey-scraps-winter-clock-change-20160908 http://cyprus-mail.com/2016/09/09/un-two-sides-will-decide-address-time-zone-problem/

Reverts without reason or comment[edit]

You reverted 3 of my recent edits, namely Ju 86, Ar-95 and Junkers G-38, without stating any reason or giving any comment.

All files had descriptions in German; I had replaced the wrong term "Kennung" with the correct "Luftfahrzeugkennzeichen". In the case of the G-38 you even reverted the correct registration "D-AZUR" to "D-Azur" - all registration are always in capital letters, worldwide.

Apparently, you are not completely familiar with aeronautical terms and regulations, so please read the respective articles in the German Wikipedia or at least the most important extracts:

  • "Dieser Artikel behandelt die Kennung von Leuchtfeuern für die Schifffahrt sowie von Funkfeuern für Navigationszwecke. Für das amtliche Kennzeichen von Luftfahrzeugen im Sinne einer Registrierung, siehe Luftfahrzeugkennzeichen ..."
  • "Das Luftfahrzeugkennzeichen (umgangssprachlich oft fälschlich als Flugzeugkennung bezeichnet) ..."

Please refrain from reverting correct edits, especially without giving any reason or comment. --Uli Elch (talk) 09:47, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's irrelevant as no one is supposed to tangle with the original archive descriptions, there's a clearly visible note you ignored. You may use the field/section "Wiki description" for additional info/comments. --Denniss (talk) 16:58, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mráz K-65A Čáp[edit]

Your revert was done incorrectly. The reason given was "was produced by Mraz", but this is not correct. Benes-Mraz actually built the Category:Mráz K-65A Čáp, a variant of the Storch, and that category is rightly categorized under Category:Aircraft built by Mráz, so it is not correct to also categorize the Storch under Mraz. About Dodge Sprinter[edit]

Hello Denniss.
As you said, the Dodge Sprinter is a relabeled MB. But if I'm not mistaken, relabeled vehicles are not classified as sub-models (or hatever the name given to them) in Commons. See the Opel Combo // Fiat Doblo, the Fiat Talento // Renault Trafic and so on. The Dodge should therefore not be sub-categorized that way, for me, all the more as it is already present as {{cat see also}}. Or we would have to make it the same way for the Freightliner Sprinter, for the Ram ProMaster (as sub-category of the Fiat Ducato), and for all rebadged vehicles or manufactured products (which makes a lot Clin).
Regards,
BarnCas (talk) 13:28, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's wrong categorizing, any relabeled model should be tracable down to ist master/original version. --Denniss (talk) 13:50, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
From what I understand, that's apparently the way it's done since the beginning of Commons: no sub-categories unless being from the same brand, the {{cat see also}} being there to keep the trace of the filiation/relationship. Which means it's no longer a "wrong way" (if it ever was), but "the way to be done", even if disturbing Clin
I think this is also made to avoid weird relationships: what if the next Peugeot Boxer is still called Peugeot Boxer (which is what will mot probably happen)? If the general category of this van was set as sub-category of the Fiat Ducato, that would create a problem, leading to correct all previous categories to recreate the filiation. And where should that sub-categorization start or stop? Is a Vauxhall a "sub-Opel", or the opposite? Is the Plymouth Reliant the parent or the sub-model of the Dodge Aries?
By keeping the Dodge version as sub-model of the MB van, you categorize it the way you thing it should logically be done, but not the way it's done in Commons for now. And you make an exception to Commons' habits: which way should be followed?
BarnCas (talk) 15:22, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No permission since tag[edit]

Hi, I reverted your npd tag again on that page. That tag is specifically for the situation where a free *license* is claimed from a given source website, but the claimed license is not seen at that website. A PD tag is not a license, legally speaking, and unless they are blatantly wrong (i.e. the work is obviously not yet public domain), are not ever subject to speedy deletion. If you have doubts that the file is PD, you can open a regular DR. That particular photo was obviously published by 1945 at the latest. Whether we know enough to say it's anonymous, and the U.S. status, may be debatable -- but is nowhere near an "obvious" problem that is subject to speedy deletion. Those are reserved for blatant errors. Carl Lindberg (talk) 22:50, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Denniss is a saboteur?[edit]

I have no patience for a person whos only purpose seems to be to sabotage Wikipedia. Can someone please explain to me how this user have the right to deny perfectly correct edits? In my case I get persistent comments on the lack of source for this (my own and privately owned) picture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamir_(ship)?wteswitched=1#/media/File:Last_Sighting_of_Pamir%3F.jpg

Any clarification would be welcome. It seems as if I am far from the only one getting issues from this individual. I thought in my naïvety that it was welcome to add knowledge and facts to Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RoundaboutSkid (talk • contribs) 20:07, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your upload stated "taken by my step grandfather Serafims Berzins". He would own the copyright to the original photograph, and that would normally expire 70 years after his death and the image is then public domain and permissible here. Yor own scan is then irrelevant since it's a copy of that image. Perhaps you could clarify his date of death? Thanks, and throwing around accusations of sabotage here is unlikely to get you very far. We all act in good faith here. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:13, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. I had read other disappointed comments, and - perhaps mistakenly - understood that I was not the only one being frustrated. However, I now understand that you meticulously are ensuring that copyright legislation is respected, among others. I have to withdraw my accusation, and ask for understanding. I was so happy to be able to, for the first time ever, contribute to Wikipedia with knowledge that was new to me. I have in my private possession, a photograph taken by my fathers stepfather. It was given to me by my father. I had hoped that a scan of that photo was permitted, and that it could contribute to a fascinating and terrible story. Serafims Berzins died 12 April 1988. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RoundaboutSkid (talk • contribs) 17:41, 11 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Denniss, please add an unblock request. I  Support unblock after checking the apparent file reverts that were the basis of this block (that's a guess as no link has yet been added to the block notice). Denniss' reverts were widely spaced and Denniss contributed a rationale on the talk page for their action. The file was raised for admin attention on the noticeboard, and as no immediate excessive revert-warring was happening, the correct and normal action should have been taken to protect the file from further reverts to encourage discussion and consensus, not blocking the two parties. The admin action to block for 24 hours was unnecessary, punitive and highly inappropriate if no series of warnings was first attempted (as far as I can tell, there were no warnings given to Denniss before the block). -- (talk) 11:51, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G. and Krimuk2.0: Well, no, not technicallly (see Commons:WikiProject Public Domain/PD-Art review for reasons). PD-Art only covers why a 2D-work don't grant the photographer any copyrights, not why the artwork is PD in the US as well as the soure country. The code you seek is {{PD-Art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1923}} (or {{PD-Art|PD-old-80-1923}} if you want to manually update it after 10 years). --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 06:10, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Josve05a and Krimuk2.0: So {{PD-art|PD-old}} is right or wrong for this file?   — Jeff G. ツ 12:28, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: That would generate a message about DWs of 2D-works not being copyrightable (PD-art), and that it is PD in countries which have 70 p.m.a (PD-old/PD-70). It would also need a reason why it is PD in the US (hence -1923 in my message above). So, {{PD-art|PD-old}} is not wrong, just incomplete. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 17:23, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

B-18 Bolo has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this gallery, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Your revert[edit]

Hi. What is the reason for your revert? Cherkash (talk) 13:06, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reasonless reversion[edit]

Could you please explain your reversion? I posted my rationale on the talk page, I would appreciate to see your point of view. Kees08 (talk) 04:07, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, please note a speedy deletion tag is not appropriate as the file has been nominated for a community discussion at DR. Nevertheless, please feel free to share any concern about permission at the discussion there. — Racconish💬 08:16, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

In File:Russophone.svg can you color Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as well as Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the same color as Russia etc., because in that file there are only two categories with countries where Russian is an official language and countries where Russian is widely spoken but is not official.

Thank you.

There is no difference between an "official language" and a "state language", because they are different wordings for the same thing (e.g. like "streetcar" and "tramway" for the same type of transport). Russian is an official language at the national level in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and also in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
In all the countries listed below (both internationally recognized and partially recognized), Russian is a co-official language with equal status:
That is why, all these countries need to be in the same color as Russia and Belarus. 31.200.11.49 07:46, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Can you color Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in the same color as Russia and Belarus, and add all these sources in that file? The other users who uploaded this file are inactive or perhaps even retired, and the other user with whom I was communicating about the same thing, has been blocked. I am SVG illiterate and cannot do these changes. 31.200.21.131 15:47, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Deniss, would you care to explain why did you undo my edit of the description of the photo of bombed Wieluń? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Zniszczenia1939_0.jpg#file Actually, it's the the second time i edit it (Mzw.wielun = Museum of the Wieluń's Region, the owner of the physical copy of the presented photo), and it's the second time you restore description right back to the previous. I am not very familiar with editing wikipedia pages, so if it's being removed due to technical issues - could you please explain what I'm doing wrong there? Or please spare a minute and fix it yourself on the grounds, that current description is FALSE and misleading.

Neither was this photo made on the 1st September (the city is empty, there's far to little smoke from the burning buildings and we posses several of other aerial photos made on 2nd September that match the circumstances of this), nor was it made from a church tower (there is no church in Wieluń in that direction from which the photo was made, and to make a photo that's looking down from significant hight on City Hall with Krakowska Tower you would have to stand on enourmous building, which never was there - unless you're making photo from a plane)

I'm eagerly awaiting your answer regarding this topic. If you have any questions, here's the direct contact to the Museum: mzw@poczta.onet.pl

Blank maps[edit]

Why did you revert my edits for the file descriptions of so-called blank maps? Those maps are objectively not blank. Having borders is not blank. I can get overwriting existing files but there's no policy against editing descriptions. Thylacinus cynocephalus (talk) 01:26, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Because they are blank maps, borders or not. --Denniss (talk) 10:41, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

By definition, a purely blank map does not have borders. A blank map has nothing on it. Borders are a thing. If that isn't blank, then what is?

A barnstar for you![edit]

Photo marked for deletion[edit]

Hi Denniss, I have a release from the photographer to use this image of Henry Ian Cusick as my own, as he does not have a Wiki account. I cannot learn the best way to submit that release, can you help me with that? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by A70eezchild (talk • contribs) 15:28, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:OTRS, specifically Commons:OTRS#Licensing_images:_when_do_I_contact_OTRS?. Please leave a note at the deletion request that you will send a permission to OTRS, avoiding early deletion. --Denniss (talk) 16:08, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
