I'm not sure why you removed these? The poster is a protest poster from the Tel Aviv Pride month radical LGBT campaign, and refers to bisexual oppression. You also put a permissions warning on it even though I clearly stated I own the rights to it... Why? TMagen (talk) 19:11, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I am writing in response to the email notification regarding the violation of the rights to the logo used in IV LO entry. I would like to confirm that I am the author of the school logo used both on the facebook website http://www.facebook.com/pages/4LO/176947745693389 and in the Wikipedia entry that has been recently created by me. Should I obtain a confirmation from the school to make sure the entry is not deleted ? Or maybe there is some other way to confirm that I have actually made it ? I am quite new at this and this is my first Wiki entry, therefore I would like to do it by the book. Looking forward to hearing from you Thank you for your help

Moving nsd template

Dear user, I appreciate your contributions to the Commons, please do not move the nsd or other licensing problem tags to the bottom, they should be on top of page and noticeable for everyone, so users could understand and solve the issue or stop from using it somewhere else before problem is solved, regards.   ■ MMXX  talk  13:54, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Cathy,

I changed two of you voting templates at FPC, cf the recognised voting templates. You can express a nuance to your vote using an optional parameter in the voting templates. Your participating in voting

Dear Cathy,

I can see that you participated in the featured picture voting on Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Steinway & Sons concert grand piano, model D-274, manufactured at Steinway's factory in Hamburg, Germany.png. Fortunately, this beautiful picture became a featured picture because many persons participated in the voting period. The rules says that there has to be at least 7 supporting votes and a ratio of supporting/opposing votes at least 2/1 (a two-thirds majority).[1]

Therfore, I would kindly ask you if you would like to give your vote in this similar voting Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Steinway & Sons upright piano, model K-132, manufactured at Steinway's factory in Hamburg, Germany.png before it ends on 9 May 2012 at 01:58:26 (UTC).

Thanks!

What are you doing on categories? Please stop it !

Hi Cathy Richards. What are you doing on categories? What is the sense of your destructive edits? Please stop it! I lost a lot of time to revert many of your wrong edits. Why do you delete inter-wikis? Why do you cancel important mother-categories like here? And please, don't delete at Ancient Roman categories the Category:Ancient Roman categories: this is a very important category for maintenance of these cats, and for the correct assignment of the categories that relate to the world and culture of ancient Rome. Don't do it again! If you don't undestand the sense or the importance of all these categories and the complex system of category-trees of Commons, please let it be, don't make any edits. Otherwise they are to be considered vandalism. Thank you! --DenghiùComm (talk) 15:24, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Creating apparent category inconsistency

You should either remove all Venus symbols from Category:Female symbols, or leave them all in... AnonMoos (talk) 18:49, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Why are you removing "Category:Female symbols" from only some images in "Category:Venus symbols", but leaving it place for others? I don't understand it, and I doubt whether it's resulting in clearer categorization... AnonMoos (talk) 06:28, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

It doesn't make too much sense to add "Wicca" to this category (and Wicca also should not have been in Category:Mother Goddess). Wiccans did not invent neo-pagan Goddess worship, Wiccans do not monopolize neo-pagan Goddess worship, and Wiccans do not define neo-pagan Goddess worship for other groups. At most it can be said that they publicized it (though they must share the honors with Robert Graves, who significantly influenced the concept of the Wiccan Goddess, while Wiccans didn't influence Robert Graves at all). If "Mother Goddess" is de facto a Wiccan category, then its name should be changed to indicate this, because its current name does not indicate Wiccan-specificity. And why are you removing neighborhood categories? Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:49, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

If a photo or category is listed in both a general category (say "Manhattan") and a specific category which is entirely included in the general category (say "Kips Bay, Manhattan"), then remove the general category, not the specific one. Also, many categories are not entirely included in another categories: streets, for instance, can pass through many neighborhoods. I've rollback many of your edits of the past couple of days because your deletions were incorrect. Please be more careful in your editing. Sexuality and Reproduction

Hi. I'm very glad with your participation in the sex-themed categories. I think we both agree on that in actual terms (AKA real life), reproduction --- being a derivative of life cycle --- gives birth to sexuality and not the other way around. Sexuality, being the physiological, social and psychological infrastructure that is in turn materialized in activity(ies) of sex, is in service of the primordial call to reproduce. So the only question is about the specific category directionality - "from cause to result" vs "from result to cause", that Commons should employ to best demonstrate this path for navigational purposes. The way I see it, category trees typically and ideally begin from the "larger" base, i.e. the causes-of-life, and then step gradually across the stations down to "birth" (where it all starts again, hehe), and by this, Category:Reproduction must contain Category:Sexuality, and not be parented by it. See my in changes in these cats and tell me if you see eye to eye with that method or have other insights. Orrlingtalk 20:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Porn is art

Pornography is a (artistic) representation of humans having sex, - not only by movies but most mediae, so I can't see why Category:People having sex in art shoudn't be parent-category for Category:Pornography. In this light, porn films don't need themselves the "People having sex in art"-tag, simply because films are one medium of art within the broader pornography that includes also books, web porn, live shows... = all being arts (as I see it). Please tell if you see things in a different way. Thanks, Orrlingtalk 16:47, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Stop the obsession about red parents please

Stop creating categories that only include a single item, or omitting them from where they are. Red parents are a most legitimate infrastructure for future categories that may not necessarily have enough content at present when they are added, therefore removing them is wrong - and at the same time, "bluing" them without caring to populate them is also wrong. Please stop removing the principals of architectural firms

Perhaps you are not aware that the names you are removing are those of architects who founded or were othewrwise principals of those firms. As such they need to be cross-categorized. The obsession with a single-hierarchy structure is damaging, and makes it harder for people to find things. Life isn't a straight-forward hierarchy, and neither should our categorization be. You can help by stopping these edits. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:56, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Fellatio in art

Hi Cathy Richards. To give the Category:Males having sex in art to the Category:Fellatio in art is wrong! "Fellatio" means "oral sex" and can be performed by males and by females. These two sub-categories are in the cat "Fellatio in art". The category "Males having sex in art" ist just given (correctly!) to the category "Males performing fellatio in art‎". So please don't overcat the generic category "Fellatio in art" with the specific category "Males performing fellatio in art‎", because this is wrong, and it's an overcategorization too. Tank you! Your Cat-a-lot

Hi Cathy, because the category Hearts with transparent background is too heavily crowded (at the moment 472 items) I thought to diffuse some groups of files into useful subcategories. I made a note about that into the category.
One suggested action would be to move all files «Valentines-day-hearts-X-alphabet-at-coloring-pages-for-kids-boys-dotcom.svg» into an own subcategory, the Valentine's Day hearts alphabet. To avoid crowding of that subcategory, I established an own subcategory for all the GIF files. This structure seemed useful to me, and it would make subcategories with not more than 40 items.

You recategorized many of these alphabet files, thank you. But at the moment all SVGs are still additionally contained in the main category, and all the GIFs in the higher subcategory instead of the lower one.

I would like to find an agreeable solution, together with you. I am not sure whether Cat-a-lot is the best tool for that, may be you know to request a bot? Let's talk about! sarang사랑 15:43, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Dear Cathy Richards,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

United States military ribbon-cutting ceremonies outside the United States

I noticed that you tagged Category:United States military ribbon-cutting ceremonies outside the United States for speedy, which I guess is my own fault for making it and then going out and doing other things the past couple days without explaining first. But there are 50+, maybe 100+ items in Category:Ribbon-cutting ceremonies to drill down there, which I'll try and get to over the weekend; it's basically all the U.S. military images that I didn't already drill down into Category:United States military ribbon-cutting ceremonies in the United States‎. I've explained further at Category talk:United States military ribbon-cutting ceremonies outside the United States#New category. --Closeapple (talk) 15:35, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Correction: It appears I didn't get all the photos that should go "in the United States" either; probably forgot to check past the 200 file mark when I was doing them. So there are still files from Category:Ribbon-cutting ceremonies to put into both subcategories. --Closeapple (talk) 15:50, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Julie or Vipsania ?

Hello, can you show me sources about your opinion ? I have seen and take picture myself of the sculpture in the Grand Palais Auguste (I will return one day to see again) and the head is attribued to Julie and also here [[4]] - [[5]] - Thanks for more informations. - Siren-Com (talk) 12:46, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I see, but why since 2004 the Toulouse museum have not change his mind about this problem. Wainting for more information, I prefer to expose the two way of attribution of the head. I will continue to try to understand better where is the thruth (sorry for my imperfect english) - Siren-Com (talk) 19:32, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
Also, where do you get the information that File:-0020 Altes Museum Mädchenkopf anagoria.JPG is Julia head ?

Gender-neutral actor subcategories

I noticed that you put Category:Not Ready For Prime Time Players in an actress category. Why do we have "Actors by production" and "Actresses by production" separately anyway? I had the same problem with Category:Television actors vs. Category:Television actresses, but I understood that one, so I just left it off as a parent category. Is there any sense at all to actors being split by gender by production? I think there needs to be a gender-neutral actor category structure of some kind, because (1) people who are not thinking about gender are going to drop everyone in "actor"; (2) the current split makes it impossible to properly categorize gender-neutral categories like Category:Not Ready For Prime Time Players because both parent categories make large number of actors and actresses descendant categories of the explicitly-declared wrong gender. If someone were to use {{Intersect categories}} on an actress category right now, for example, it might throw all the guys on SNL into another "actress" category because they're only one level removed from being an actress. Has there been any discussion of renaming male-specific categories to "Male actors" instead, so that we at least have a primitive gender-neutral actor structure when the subject requires it? --Closeapple (talk) 23:08, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Categories must be in plural !

Hi Cathy Richards. What you have done here is wrong ! Consider that in Commons the categories must be expressed in the plural form. I will be greatful if you may revert what you have done. Thank you very much. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 08:41, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Murder is a perfectly good uncountable noun, much like, say, architecture. There's absolutely no need to change it to refer to the individual acts instead of the overarching idea.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:58, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

I think the best thing to do now is that the community of Commons decide. I open a CfD and I copy the discussion above in it. Thank you at all. --DenghiùComm (talk) 22:37, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

LGBT activists categories

Hi Cathy. The reason for including both Category:LGBT people from South Africa and Category:LGBT activists from South Africa is that the latter is not necessary LGBT people per Category:LGBT activists description and the associated w:en:Category:LGBT rights activists description. I put Category:LGBT activists from South Africa in Category:LGBT people from South Africa by mistake, removed it but I see you have just put it back again. HelenOnline 16:43, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Flagging File:DPART Roundel Final Version.png ?

Cathy Richards,

May i ask why have you nominated our new logo for deletion? Would it not have been pertinent to check that the logo is actually hosted on our website prior to doing so? http://www.dpart.org/

I find it rather perplexing that you would flag a self designed logo for "permission" deletion when it clearly has attribution attached to it. :/

Regardless I have now submitted an email to permissions @ wikicommons, it is just frustrating as I have enough on my plate and then having to take time out to "re-explain" my position to Wiki is highly irregular considering I created the logo and have creative ownership of said item and have allowed it be shared on the public domain. What ever happened to Wikimedia and Wikipedia being the "people" portal?!

Please could you kindly send users a message prior to such edits or flags.

Cheers.

Images deleted and email send about copyright... can you help me?

Hi Cathy: Sorry to bother you, but I will like to ask you for advise and help. I add some images into my account and I send the authorization form by email. Some of the pictures were deleted. I receive an email asking for more information (like websites where I use it). I already send this new email with links to different websites (and keeping the reference number of the previous email on the subject), but i didn't receive any reply and I am thinking that may be more images will be deleted if I don't receive an answer soon. We are not a big company or famous photographer, so we don't have official registrations in agencies or anything like that, but we use all the images, that produce ourselves, to show our film work and we never charge anything anywhere. We have different accounts in internet where we showcase the pictures. We send the information on the email and we follow all the instructions that we receive before. Also I cannot upload the images that were deleted previously. Do you think that, after it is clear, there is any way to re-upload it? Can you check for me, if possible, please? Thanks and sorry again for the trouble. All the best. Almost Red Productions.

Could you please explain...

Could you please explain why you moved Category:Sharon Lewis from a gender neutral parent category to a gender based parent category? If there is a policy or guideline that recommends we should prefer non-gender neutral parent categories I'll follow your example. Otherwise I am going to use the gender neutral names. Thanks for taking the time to reply User talk:Geo Swan. Is there a reason we shouldn't keep the discussion here, where it started?
I didn't see a link, in your reply, to a policy or guideline. All I saw wa an expression of an opinion. As I wrote above, if there is a policy or guideline, I'll yield to it. If there isn't an established convention then we should be having this discussion somewhere more central, where everyone can weigh in. Geo Swan (talk) 19:35, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Categories

If you have such passion in adding categories can you please do it with more sense, not just "To add something"?

Please add:

Important!

If you are going to add Category:Alexey Petrovich of Russia in portraits in Category:Portraits of Russia please look before in Category:Portraits of Russia to see that somebody did a hell of work to cleaning up there? And to see that here are only 8 (eight) sub-categories prudently structured: "by century; by model; by author etc". And than think: mayby your 9th category Category:Alexey Petrovich of Russia in portraits will be a little strange there?

It is hard for you to take a little more time and think what category will be more appropriate? You don't like to search a little longer? To find out that Maximilian I is "monarch" not "people"?

Do you understand than very often your work is so inaccurate that it should be redone by other wikiusers? Please be more accurate.--Shakko (talk) 12:47, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

ONCE AGAIN

Category:Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova in portraits is NOT for Category:Portraits of women. Look into Category:Portraits of women - do you see there any other category with model's name? Why you don't look at first? If you need to add something - go on and create Category:Portraits of women by name. If your specialization at commons is "adding categories', why you can't do it faultless?--Shakko (talk) 21:31, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Category:Friedrich Wilhelm I of Brandenburg is not for Category:Portraits of kings or Category:Sculptures of kings. He wasn't king, he was Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia.--Shakko (talk) 09:56, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Category:Romantic composers from France

Hi Cathy Richards, I am sorry to see that you had to undo some of my actions in the musical department. Let me give some the reasons for my cleaning-up the categories which are now redundant in a way. Some time ago I was working on a system for the musical categories, so that it would possible to search for a category of specific musicians, even if the group would be limited to one or two files. The problem with that was: a lot of navigational categories and many categories with only a little number of files in them. Some users pointed out to me that it was not a desirable method, it would be better to start a new category, only when it can be filled with a substancial number of files/musicians. I was now working on cleaning and creating a limited number of straight sets of categories, with little as possible divisions. Some divions are rather easy e.g. female-male, but especialy the musical styles and specialisations are not always so easy and they are far too numerous, such as classical style periods, or the different rock and other styles. All the same, some categories must still get attention, an clear exemple is the Violinists from the United States where the subdivision of 'male/female violinists from the United States' sould be continued or that it must be turned back to the original category. Anyway I am open for suggestions, so if you have some, don't hesitate...--Elgewen (talk) 14:26, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Cathy. I'm wondering why you put back on this page. I removed it because it's already in Category:LGBT actors from the United States, which is under . 1903 Acland photo category removal

What is your rationale for removing the "Early color photography" (and yet not "Early colour photographs"!?!) category from this image? It is a colo(u)r photo taken by the separation method, like en:Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky's slightly later ones, and a nice early-dated example which does not deserve to be made less apparent to users by removing a relevant category. 66.249.175.210 19:37, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

I see you've reinstated "Early color photography", for which thanks, but now removed "Early colour photographs". If one has to go, you probably had it right the first time: Acland was British. IMO, both categories need to remain. Having those two practically identical categories is obviously undesirable, but they are a manifestation of the eternal AE-BE spelling war for which no mutually acceptable solution, other than peaceful coexistence, has yet been found. 66.249.175.210 20:08, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

File:Barflies by George Chakravarthi.jpg

Can you please explain why you removed this image from the category Transgender? This image is a still from a piece of video artwork which explores reactions to trangender, transexual or transvestite people. Emerald (talk) 16:24, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

You have subsequently removed the Transvestite category, again without a note of explanation. What are you doing? Transgender and transvestite are distinct categories. Please explain why you are doing this. It doesn't take much effort to add a note! Your actions are NOT HELPFUL. Emerald (talk) 23:22, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Condoms in art

Hello, Cathy! Concerning this edit, while I agree that most "Somethings in art" categories in Commons use a too-broad notion of art, this matter should be centrally addressed (I’d support a wholesale change to "Depictions of Somethings", f.i.) and not changed willy-nilly in separate instances. The problem with this poster image is that, while it depicts a condom very proeminently, your edit removed all categorization concerning condoms. If you oppose this being among the contents of Category:Condoms in art (and I cannot disagree), then please move it up to Category:Condoms, instead of disconnecting it from condoms at all. -- Tuválkin 18:23, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Portraits of males by country has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
