Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

User categories

Helen,

You might want to look at creating yourself a user category. They are handy to create a collection of your photos so that you can easily see what you have uploaded. You can see mine at Category:Files by User:NJR ZA.

When uploading a photo, you just add your user category as a category and all your photos will be grouped together. Just make sure to add {{User category|HelenOnline}} to your category to ensure that it sorts under user categories rather than the main commons category structure.

Could you double-check your rename request? On Google Maps, 45 Dorp Street has a house number on the wall to the left of the door, and 47 Dorp Street has a house number to the right of the door. On Google Maps, there is also a white fence in front of 47 Dorp Street. The house numbers and the fence are missing on the image on Commons. Looking at Google Maps, I believe that this is a different house to the west of both house 45 and house 47. Counting the number of houses, I'd guess that this is house number 37 instead, but I can't find any number written on the house. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:33, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am sure. We have (going east): File:37-39 Krige's Cottages, Dorp Street (closer).JPG, (41 needs photo), File:43-45 Krige's Cottages, Dorp Street.JPG, (47 not a protected heritage site) and File:49-51 Krige's Cottages, Dorp Street.JPG. The only number I can make out clearly from the Commons photographs is 43. There are eight units altogether, even numbers are on the other side of the street. Cat-a-lot

Helen,

I notice you are doing a lot of categorization of the WLM images. The cat-a-lot tool will make moving images between categories a lot easier for you.

If you go to Preferences, under the Gadgets tab, under Tools for categories you can enable cat-a-lot there. Once enabled you will see a Cat-a-lot button on the bottom right whenever you are in a Category page.

Hi Helen. I believe you incorrectly tagged File:Mandela Homenagem Joanesburgo.JPG as a copyright violation. The source (and even the file metadata) explicit that the original author is Agência Brasil (more specifically, one of its photographers, Marcello Casal Jr). Also, please keep in mind that generally it's good practice to assume good faith and let the uploader know beforehand that you believe their file should be deleted. I have contacted user High Contrast and asked her/him to restore it. If you still believe it is case for copyvio, please feel free to nominate it for the standard deletion process (and please let me know). Hi Pikolas. I apologize if I made a mistake, and I apologize for not notifying you (I missed seeing that I needed to do that). I stated my reasons in my edit summary which obviously wasn't enough. The Agência Brasil licence template is out of date, and the wording does not reflect what the website says about terms of use now. My understanding of the licence for this specific photograph still is that "unless specified otherwise" applies as the photograph specifies © (= all rights reserved copyright) not a Creative Commons licence. Hey. No worries :). I think I may be missing something here, though. Nowhere in the page does the agency specify otherwise. Please compare that page with this one, where it's specifically stated the images are from Agência Lusa or Nações Unidas (United Nations). But yeah, that's probably irrelevant now. Zulu people

Thank you for this edit. I had to undo it, for the reason that the category is about Zulu people (=individual persons) and not peoples in the sense of tribes. Same is the parent category Bantu people: it is aiming at listing individuals, like men and women who are Bantu. Orrlingtalk 14:47, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Inevitably there's a mess (to some levels) in this tree :), I'm glad you were alert. It's likely that when those subcats were created they received the title "people" - without deciding whether its the top-category of the given tribe or a folder for the individuals (like Zulu people is). See my edit from now: what do you say about taking the other cats in the same line? For this, "Nguni people" for example will have to move to Category:Nguni (which is unreasonably still red!), and the same with the others; in such a way that no "Xxx people" cat will show up under Category:Bantu peoples (that is, subcats of Category:Bantu peoples should be only the plain name of the tribe, without "people" suffix). Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Photo challenge Proverbs

Hello Helen,
I just wanted to check once more if you are okay with the challenge theme or if I should change it to Proverbs and idioms (the distinction exists in German, too, but it's quite muddled - or at least it seems that way to me... but perhaps it's a lot clearer in English?). I am happy with it the way it is (but I have removed the idioms examples for now and you have not put them back). I just think we should be clear upfront as otherwise people will understand it differently which is unfair. Ideally for me, we leave it as is or change the heading and description and examples to include idioms. I don't mind which it is as long as it is clear. Does that make sense? It does - and you are correct that inconsistencies in the proposed challenge theme are a bad idea (which is why I didn't change your corrections) - it's just that I suspect that people will still understand it differently (in the worst case during the submission as well as during the voting)... which can still be seen as unfair. --Anna reg (talk) 11:35, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't know, as I can't say how it's used in other languages and therefore can't estimate if it will be a problem or not. But perhaps it's safer to include idioms. In that case I would be happy if you look for pictures, but I'd like to add the general view of the Dutch painting - it's quite famous and one of the first things that come to my mind when thinking of how to illustrate Sprichwörter (which would translate to proverbs). Commons Photo Challenge January 2014

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Of course you are not alone - and you're right that he has also earned one (I think Llann Wé² even caught one or two of my submissions without category oops) - but while I read your comments on the talk page, I had no idea how to respond to them, as I can't really help with a solution (except volunteering to help). As I do appreciate what you are doing, I decided it was time to distribute my first barnstar... ;->

But I can contribute a bit more to further automatisation: as far as I know, Dschwen created an automatisation for the upload/categorisation (see here) - I'm not sure why it was not discussed further at that time, but probably because it concerns project background. We should restart the discussion - I think one of the main points against automatisation was that the challenges should be flexible. Perhaps we can decide that we are now ready to loose some of that flexibility in order to decrease maintenance work...

Are you saying that if anyone wants to use the outline of the African continent in artwork, which includes all maps of Africa and globes and aerial photographs of the continent from outer space, they need to get permission from the IEC which was only formed in 1996? You know, sometimes it's hard to decide what's (c) and what's not. I learned (here) to go by can I draw this? The IEC is a South African Gov., so according to their (c)law it will be free 50 years after publication. There's a colored IEC-logo on enwiki w:en:File:IEC SA logo.png which is tagged as fair use. I am mainly interested in clarifying principles here. It is not the end of the world if we cannot use the image on Wikipedia, but I do want to understand why I cannot, otherwise I will never learn what I can or cannot upload here. It is my personal opinion that all the elements of the IEC logo do not exceed TOO and the logo would therefore not be eligible for copyright protection (trademarked yes, copyright no per PD-textlogo). I can accept the admins here may believe that the logo overall does (or it may and they just want to be safe). I would like to clarify the African outline element as a matter of principle though, as I do not believe it exceeds TOO. The African continent is not a man-made concept and a simple outline of it has been drawn by many people over hundreds of years, so I concur with Commons:Derivative works#Maps and do not believe the drawing rule of thumb you gave me (which is helpful for me for future reference) applies here and would like confirmation of that for future reference. What I meant is can I draw the whole thing? You are right, it is at least partly playing it safe. Regarding the outline of the continent: For my part, I go with the whole composition of whatever is there. If there's an artistic feel to it, I lean towards above TOO. The thing is that there's no clear definition, only examples. In the beginning here on Commons, I tried to keep as much useful stuff (another thing that's a little ambiguous) as possible. Down the road I learned more about TOO and what's accepted here. If you think anything deleted is below TOO, popp in an undeletion request. It's a wiki, so you shouldn't be able to step on somebody's toes with do so.

just my 2c here, but as a common law country (in common with most Commonwealth countries) SA has almost no TOO and the stamp as a whole would easily be in copyright, you can (in my view) upload it to enwp as free PD-Textlogo with a do not copy to commons and it would probably be fine or make a fair use claim four use back on the election page to be sure of no issue. Media viewer

Hi. If you haven't worked out how already, to turn off this stupid new media viewer, go to Special:Preferences, appearance tab, and, on the images section, disable "New media viewing experience".

Photo Challenage

I should have some free time to help with the challenges tomorrow. Don't panic. There's no law says the next challenage needs to start on the 1st or voting start immediately. The only important thing is we close the existing challenges/voting when we get a chance tomorrow. If you don't do it before me then I'll do it. Just need to make a note at the top to say the challenage is closed. For the voting pages, I take them into a text editor (notepad++) and strip out the collapse top/bottom templates to expose all the votes. If you look at previous challenages you'll see what I did. Anyway, if you aren't confident in doing so or don't get around to it, then I'll pick it up. For the new voting pages, I'll run my program on the existing challenges tomorrow to create them, and I'll also count the votes. So you only really need to worry about setting up the new challenges and making sure the entry criteria (scope, when taken) is clear. Thanks again for your help. Photo challenge translations

Thanks for your work on Photo Challenges and translations. How does it work when a new watchlist notice translation is added? For example, if we publish the English one and a German speaker sees it and clicks to dismiss that notice, will they get a new (more readable/relevant) notice when the German translation is done. Or will they have missed the chance to see the message in their native language? If the latter, then it becomes much more important that we arrange as many languages as possible before the end of the month.

Which reminds me that we haven't got someone to do August/September. Have you any suggestions for someone you think might be willing/interested? I think August will be a busy month for holiday photography (at least, in my hemisphere), so it would be good to have one theme to take advantage of that and to challenge people to take photos for the theme rather than just upload. -- Colin (talk) 10:13, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know but I suspect they will not get another chance until the next month. My preferred language is set to English and I don't dismiss the watchlist message because it gives me easy access to the challenge pages. Once the first translation is done, it should be easy to update them every month even if we don't translate the new challenge names. That is what I was thinking now doing the Afrikaans one. I hadn't gotten around to it earlier, which is not too serious as most Afrikaans speakers can understand English but I know they appreciate seeing their own language.

As for next month, I would suggest advertising for volunteers again and I don't mind what the theme or conditions are. Helen Online 10:28, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox/Watchlist notices

Hello Helen,
first - thanks for filling in the missing bullets, translating to afrikaans and probably checking if the translations work. I tried for some time yesterday to create a way to automatically translate the months into the correct language so that the repetitive part of the rules doesn't have to be translated each time - only to see in the end that that only worked for the first challenge... not sure if it's really useful the way it is... what do you think?
second - are the descriptions okay? I'd prefer to have a second opinion before I ask others to translate them (or check my French translations).
third - for the watchlist notice we just need to change the months and challenge names (which isn't strictly necessary), which should be possible to do as soon as the other pages are translated - or am I missing something?
By the way, I removed the category-sentence as Colin and you agreed that it means more maintenance work without advantage at the moment - no idea if I should create the categories or not.

It worked in the end - but I first thought that creating one template should be enough and ended up having a problem with the time restriction (the sentence 'but may have been taken earlier'), which is the reason why I finally created a second nearly identical template (Template:Photo challenge rules restricted), even though that could be confusing. It is probably possible to have a parameter for changing that sentence, but so far have no idea how to manage that.

2) You found a way to hide that empty space between the list points! Great! I'll write to the other 'Photo-challenge-translators' that the new pages are ready ;->

3) Sure, but if we don't need to ask for translations first, we don't need a place to prepare it before we can post it on the watchlist-messages-page.

I understand what Vacation means but wouldn't use the term myself. I'm fine with the "Holidays/vacations" combined term, though we can't use that for the page location as a slash creates a sub-page -- so best just leave it where it is. I've tweaked the English description to remove "just" as that seemed to include scenic photos rather than exclude. I haven't changed the translation as you suggested because it is based on a template which can be used any month in the future so it cannot be customised just to make sense this month. The sentence must also include the August month to make it clear at any time (now or long in the future) exactly what the challenge period was. I am sure the wording can still be improved taking all that into account. The postponement per se is covered on the talk pages (I will add a note to the challenge page now). It's quite simple to use and I find it more practical than the Wizzard because you can copy-paste (ctrl+C/ctrl+V, no right click) plenty infos to each picture and/or pre-fill cats or desc common to all the pics you upload in a raw. When all info's are in you click the upload button and go back to IRL... Hello Helen,
you probably already noticed that I tried to actualise the next watchlist-message in your sandbox (I gave up with the Hebrew, as I don't even understand what's inside the link and what isn't - but I did notify the user who made the translation). Do you have the time and motivation to do the Afrikaans translations?
The links would be Smoke, Leaves and Template:Photo challenge rules, as I added the sentence Please do not nominate lots of similar photos; instead choose just your best and most varied images. at Colin's request.

Done Thanks Anna. With Template:Photo challenge rules restricted, I think we will need to add a blank third parameter field or use the same month to avoid the current error message. There is also an error with the month translation I am trying to figure out, e.g. the German version says December instead of November. We may have to revisit the templates. I am not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination so any changes I made in the past may just have been a quick fix that won't always work very well. There is definitely something wrong with the month translations (the first month is being moved forward one month), on both restricted and non-restricted templates. Today is the 31st of the month (current day value). All the months with errors were ones that don't have 31 days, the function "fills in" with current values and was carrying over the number of days after month end into the next month. The problem with September would only have happened today.

The rules templates should be working in all languages now, as I have added a day=1 and year=2014 value to the time function. (It was previously using the current value which threw out the translated month output today for months with less than 31 days as it was using the current value of day=31 from today's date.) Thanks Helen. The difference in the 'old' badge and the correct one is not so noticeable if you don't know what you're looking for! itis in the wings of the Wyvern in the middle of the badge. The incorrect on has funny little circles in the wings, and the correct one is clear and clean in the wings. There is also a colour difference. First:There is nothing wrong in a category named Tugboats in a certain place/country/harbour/and so on. These categories are basicly part of Category:Ships by country of location. But you redirected Category:Tugboats of South Africa to Category:Tugboats in South Africa and that is not correct. Ships are registered in a certain country and the category "of" is for all images of that particular ship. She can be in a certain place too and there go the images where the ship was located, not the category of the ship herself, as she can be found all over the world (in theory).
