Eye Movements Image Correction[edit]

Your image on the Eye Movements page that shows which extraocular muscles are involved in moving the eye appears to have some mistakes regarding the action of the obliques. Upward gaze without lateral or medial deviation is the result of action by the superior rectus and inferior oblique. Downward gaze without deviation laterally or medially is the action of the inferior rectus and the superior oblique. The action of the superior oblique alone move the eye downward and laterally. While action of the inferior oblique elevates and laterally deviates the gaze.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Anatomical position.jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Thanks for uploading File:Rubric wordmark.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Warning[edit]

Not sure what you're trying to achieve by making edits like this, but removal of deletion tags without first remedying the described problem is not only inappropriate but also disruptive to our process. -FASTILY 20:35, 4 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fastily, I don't know what you are referring to. See the discussion here Commons:Deletion requests/File:Miss Surrey 2008 Chloe Marshall.jpg. Licensing question regarding Category:Lawrence neuroanatomy[edit]

Hello. I'm not entirely certain Lawrence's Functional Approach to Neuroanatomy qualifies for {{PD-US-not renewed}}. A U.S. Copyright Office search indicates a 2nd edition was registered in 1967 and renewed in 1995, while a third edition (retitledA Systematic Approach to Neuroscience), was registered in 1978. Assuming the images in Category:Lawrence neuroanatomy are included in these second and third editions, the claim may not be valid. Please let me know if this issue has been previously discussed, and/or if you have additional evidence the images do meet the claim of no renewal. All the best, Animalparty (talk) 21:21, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That shouldn't matter, as this is the first edition. Animalparty - See [1] CFCF (talk) 10:45, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also I don't really understand what you mean it was renewed in 1995? All works published post 1963 were auto-renewed in 1992. Republishing does not constitute a renewal of copyright, only a copyright of that edition, including any changes made in that edition. CFCF (talk) 11:01, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The link I posted seems to have expired. Searching for "functional approach to neuroanatomy" here yields the two volumes (2nd and 3rd ed.). The second edition lists registration number RE0000715682 / 1995-12-26, Renewal registration for: A00000931335 / 1967-07-06. That is what I referred to. I admit I am not well versed in copyright law of any country, and while initially skeptical that a claim of PD on HathiTrust was sufficient reliable proof of actual public domain status (the internet is far from infallible), the collaboration with the Copyright Review Management System increases my trust in veracity of the claim, and I will not pursue the matter further. All the best, Animalparty (talk) 20:20, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CFCF/Archive 1, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:HUGO BACKMANSSON, "A BEACH".jpg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Martin H. Why were these deleted? They are produced prior to 1923. In addition, why where they speedy-deleted before I was even able to comment on the. This isn't the way things are done on the Commons, and I suggest you restore them in lieu of deletion discussion. CFCF (talk) 23:07, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In any case they should be restored so that they can be transfered to the English Wikipedia, where all content created prior to 1923 is allowed. CFCF (talk) 23:13, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You uploaded the files with the claim that the painter died >70 years ago. Thats not true. No need to restore something, you simply copy&pasted the information from an external source, a Wikipedia upload can still hapen from that source. --Martin H. (talk) 10:43, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe nominate this file for deletion instead? There is no educational value if the image is incorrect and thus no point keeping it still. Cheers. --Graphium 19:01, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Graphium No but there is major resource value. The image is of high quality and can be corrected. It's an enormous shame to delete this high quality/high resoltion work. Add that to the fact that it doesn't exist in this form anywhere else on the web and we're within Wikimedia Commons archival scope. CFCF (talk) 20:29, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Thanks for finding a decent replacement for the redirect. And yes: it is a shame. More importantly: Do you have the means to correct the original? I'd be happy to restore it for a while so it could be downloaded. Please let me know. Thanks! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:39, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Image sources[edit]

CFCF, when you upload a new image to Commons you need to provide a source from where the image was taken, such as for all of these images. To do so you need to edit the image page and add the source, along with a link when possible. It is not enough to just upload a new version of a paintings and write "higher resolution" on the upload page. You need to add the image source to the main file page (where it is written "Source ="). Does Stefan not understand
This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).

The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
{{PD-Art}} template without license parameter: please specify why the underlying work is public domain in both the source country and the United States
(Usage: {{PD-Art|1=|deathyear=''year of author's death''|country=''source country''}}, where parameter 1= can be PD-old-auto, PD-old-auto-expired, PD-old-auto-1996, PD-old-100 or similar. See Commons:Multi-license copyright tags for more information.)

2016 & 2017[edit]

September 2016[edit]

Hello. I have a quick question regarding this figure: [[2]] I wanted to use this figure in a presentation, and also to make a matching one for the distribution of elements by atomic percentage - and I noticed that in the original figure the size of the regions doesn't seem to match the percentage composition... Should I upload my own corrected version, or would you rather do it yourself? Dgallichan (talk) 13:54, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Code issues in User:CFCF/common.js[edit]

Hi CFCF, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:CFCF/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Permission to use figure in a book.[edit]

Dear CFCF,

I am working with Prof. Steven LaValle to help obtain permissions for borrowing figures or pictures in his upcoming book Virtual Reality, to be published by Cambridge University Press. The book is online here:

http://vr.cs.uiuc.edu/

We are hoping to include the picture of yours:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/94/1416_Color_Sensitivity.jpg/1024px-1416_Color_Sensitivity.jpg

in this book (Chapter 5, Figure 5.3). Could we please have your permission for this? Thank you.

You can also contact me at awarkoczewski at yahoo dot com.

Cat a lot and templates[edit]

If there is no comment on errors introduced by this software bug, or anything that I may do to rectify the issue — I do not want to take part in larger discussion about the nature of categorization. CFCF (talk) 10:48, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Ugh, i see you made lots of changes with cat-a-lot to license tags. Please note that most of these changes will put the category outside of the <noinclude> tags, causing all images using these templates to be categorized as well in those template categories... Please clean this up. it's a mess. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:19, 10 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any automated tool besides cat-a-lot to do this with? Trying to use VisualFileChange only allows me to select files, not templates... TheDJ. Best, CFCF (talk) 12:04, 10 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
These edits (e.g. Special:Diff/40110961/247217824) are what caused this problem brought up by Chienenkatze. Categories that categorize templates and are not intended for the files those templates are transcluded on must go inside the <noinclude> tags, before the </noinclude>. Storkk (talk) 20:52, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You have also added the PD-Gov category to templates that are already members of subcategories, e.g, PD-USGov and PD-EUGov. These I'm just rolling back. I'm struggling to see why you haven't made an effort to fix this yourself, after TheDJ brought it up a week ago. Storkk (talk) 21:17, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
See the above response. It is not feasible to do this manually. If you could please help explain how I could perform these edits in an automated and working manner that'd be great. That Cat-a-lot includes this functionality, but does not include any way to create <noinclude>-tags is a mystery. You struggle no longer now that you know that I have made an effort. CFCF (talk) 21:30, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) This is exactly why I'm irritated. Of course it is feasible to do this manually; in fact I and JuTa and TheDJ have been doing it manually, cleaning up after you because you think it's not worth your time. Everyone makes mistakes, but the right thing to do is try to fix the ones you make rather than just shrug and leave it to others. Storkk (talk) 21:34, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I asked the question if it was possible to automate it. It is not that I don't think it is worth my time, but that I have limited time and a job I need to go to in order to afford rent. Please don't assume it is negligence that caused me to ask whether it was possible to automate the fixes, rather than go through several hundred pages manually, which can take hours – as I know because I've done it before. Ping Storkk. -- CFCF (talk) 10:22, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What point is there in having the translation subpages in the template categories as well? (Pinging JuTa who just protected many such subpages with the category on them.) FDMS 4 10:11, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
2 things:
  1. Protecting those templates is a very odd thing to do. Are we entirely sure they are perfect translated and need no editing?
  2. Why was this posted here FDMS4, on my talk page?
As for whether they should be categorized, that seems clear to me — that it would be very helpful for anyone performing a review.
CFCF (talk) 10:24, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Did you establish consensus for that large-scale mass change beforehand? Also, saying that a change is "helpful for anyone performing a review" without specifying what kind of use cases there would be isn't exactly a very convincing argument. We have an explicit policy against overcategorising of subcategories, subpages are hardly significantly different in that regard. FDMS 4 10:34, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This can under no circumstance be considered a "large-scale mass change" — yeah I messed up and I am willing to admit that, but there is no reason to be so stingy — especially because the fundament reason for the mess-up is a gadget behaving oddly and allowing non-standard functionality.
I disagree profoundly that "helpful for anyone performing a review" is insufficient a reason — because there are constant reviews of copyright tags ongoing — whether it be to ensure they are correctly worded or correctly applied. There is also need to update them as copyright law changes (as it does from time to time when you consider the 250+ countries we accept material from.
Whether you agree with the reason or not is a different thing. COM:OVERCAT does not apply here as it is currently written. I suggest you move to expand that policy if you wish it to include subpages, and my talk-page is not a proper venue for such a discussion. I would welcome anyone to point of remaining issues, or anything that was caused by this categorization bug – but I do not wish to take part in wider discussion about categorization. CFCF (talk) 10:42, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

I also have limited time and a job (as I'm sure JuTa and others do, too: we all volunteer here in our spare time), and trust me: one of the last things I want to do on a Friday night is manually fix someone else's mistakes that they have been asked to fix themselves, but have neglected to even try. And yes, it has taken hours. Hours of others' time, fixing your mess, and you haven't even lifted a finger to help. Storkk (talk) 10:48, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is just an outright lie. I have tried to help — and have nowhere stated that I do not intend to help. However, there was not so much as a single response stating that "no it is not possible to automate" or w/e — which would adequately have lead me to conclude I had to do it manually — something I would have done in the coming days, when I have time (I've had no time whatsoever to dedicate to this task for the past few days — which is why I mentioned I had a job).
Also it has not taken hours to simply revert all the tags, because that would have been as simple as running cat-a-lot to remove the tags, which takes 2 minutes. I however hoped that the end-result would be something less pointless and actually a net benefit of categorizing the tags that remain entirely outside the category. CFCF (talk) 10:55, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a lie: you were told of the mess you made a week ago. 6 days later, you concluded that "It is not feasible to do this manually." And others have now spent the time to do what you deemed infeasible. If you took the time to actually look, rather than respond with accusations of mendacity, you would see that the edits that were simply reverted were those where you added Category:PD-Gov license tags to items that already contained subcategories, like Category:PD-EUGov license tags or Category:PD-USGov license tags. Others had to be edited to move the cat inside the noinclude. Storkk (talk) 11:04, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Then there is a net-positive, if some have been categorized correctly that were not categorized correctly before. And yes, I conclude it is not feasible for me to do it manually owing to time constraints during the work-week. On the other hand, it may have been feasible for me to do now during the weekend. Had I been made aware that there was no automated way to do it (as I requested, and as I looked intensely for) — I would have reverted all the edits, something that is feasible even with limited time. So while not an outright lie from your part it is a very dishonest argument to state that I did nothing to solve it or neglected the issue. CFCF (talk) 11:19, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File language icon[edit]

Hi Carl,

I like your File:Language_icon.svg, and have been using it in a translator project. It's embedded in a template invitation I designed, which you can see at Template:X2 review help. How hard is it to develop one of these?

The project we are using this for currently deals with 39 languages and it would really be great to have a similar image, with the kanji on the left replaced by a symbol from some different scripts: Arabic, Cyrillic, some Asian languages (I assume the current character is a kanji?), Hebrew, and some Indian scripts based on Devanagari or Dravidian, maybe a Turkish letter, a Georgian or Armenian one. Is it time consuming to create one of these files? I could pick a letter from each language, or I know of one amazing polyglot who would know even better than me.

The amount of "added value" here is not huge, but it would be maybe an additional welcoming incentive for a candidate Arabic translator to see a or a there instead of a kanji, for a Russian to see a Я, for a Hebrew speaker to see an , or a Hindi speaker to see an .

Anyway, I'm sort of guessing it's too much work to bother with, and as I said, the added benefit is not clear, but if you have fun doing these images and it's fairly rote and easy, it would be fun to discuss this. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 07:04, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mathglot — please refer to http://languageicon.org/ who actually made the icon. If I recall correctly they already have different variations on it. CFCF (talk) 20:14, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Language icon.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Language icon.svg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Svengraph IMac.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!
