Query regarding Upload Wizard

Greetings! Have a rather simple, mundane problem regarding a file I'm attempting to upload under a CC0 to Commons (link here if you're interested): I don't know when the photograph was published, and the Wizard demands a publication date. Advice? Compassionate727 (talk) 23:09, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

@Compassionate727: The wizard should let you manually input a date as wikitext. Use "unknown" or preferably "{{unknown|date}}" or "{{other date|?}}" here. Guanaco (talk) 23:12, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
{{other date|before|2018-08-01}} - Jmabel ! talk 23:28, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
The page you linked said the actual source was pixabay.com. It is best to attribute to the original source. I was able to find it on pixabay here where the upload date is identified as 2014-10-22 and the photographer as Alastair Newton. —RP88 (talk) 23:31, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Updated accordingly, and I will keep those templates in mind in the future. Thank you all! While I'm asking, presumably it is possible to upload a file outside of the Wizard? I do prefer to work with Source whenever possible. Compassionate727 (T·C) 23:38, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
See Commons:Upload. There are links to a partially pre-filled wikitext form. Special:Upload is the basic, blank form. Guanaco (talk) 23:41, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
In addition to Special:Upload if want a direct raw upload you can use Special:Upload&uploadformstyle=basic. By the way, is there a reason you uploaded a lower resolution version of the photo at File:Squirrel holding nut.jpg? I can update it with the full resolution version if you have no objections. —RP88 (talk) 23:45, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Because I've never done this before and don't have a clue what I'm doing. If you could make the update, I'd appreciate that; my Internet will kill me if I try to download/upload the full resolution. Thank you both again. Compassionate727 (T·C) 00:07, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
OK, I've updated File:Squirrel holding nut.jpg with the larger version from the source. —RP88 (talk) 00:15, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks again! And I've managed to come up with two other questions, one you should be able to answer and one you might not. Simple question first: I recall seeing some photos include a camera model field, and because the source includes that information, I figured I should too. Why not? I found Template:Camera model, and it looks like Template:Information has an |other fields= that I can use. Is this the correct way to go about it? Compassionate727 (T·C) 00:57, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
The Commons software is currently automatically displaying the camera model in the Metadata section of your upload (by virtue of the model being in the image Exif data). If you like you can also add it to the Taken with Sony DSLR-A550 category. You can do this either by clicking the (+) at the bottom of the page with the category tools and typing in the name of that category, or by manually adding [[Category:Taken with Sony DSLR-A550]] to the end of the description. —RP88 (talk) 01:50, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Lol, my English Wikipedia experience does assist me in working with categories, although in your defense I've not thus far demonstrated competence in anything except working with Source. Thank you for your guidance (and patience), I have added the image to the category, and I believe I'm finally finished with this adventure. Cheers and happy editing! Second question

Second question: old musical recordings in the United States have messy copyright status. According to this not-actually-reliable (by EN:WP standards) source, musical recordings published prior to 1979 in the United States don't have federal copyright protections, although their individual states may afford them such, and some are eligible for protection because the relevant composition is copyrighted. I noticed that Commons doesn't have many (if any) full recordings for old (pre 1923) pieces, and assume the ambiguities here are the reasons for this. On YouTube, where the only consequence for breaking copyright law is that YouTube may (eventually) take your video down, these recordings are abundant. Because I have access to the technology necessary to extract audio from video, I would be interested in providing these recordings, assuming, of course, that I can verify that I won't violate state laws in doing so. Which is the actual question in all of this: where can I look to find that information? Compassionate727 (T·C) 01:15, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Is this a village pump question? I can move it. Compassionate727 (T·C) 01:16, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Questions of this nature are usually best at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright. Most pre-1972 sound recordings created in the United States are not in the public domain. Under current US law sound recordings fixed or published before February 15, 1972 are protected under state law until February 15, 2067. After that date they will enter the public domain. See Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Music. Wikimedia Foundation has a legal summary of this issue at m:Wikilegal/Copyright Status of Sound Recordings Fixed Prior to February 15 1972. —RP88 (talk) 01:38, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. This was basically the answer I expected to receive. In the meantime, I keep finding videos on YouTube licensed to (among others) "Public Domain Compositions" (example). My attempts to find an organization named this are fruitless, so I assume this is saying the composition is in the public domain and the recording is licensed (in the example) to SME (an affiliate/subsidiary of RCA Victor). I'm not sure what "1 Music Rights Societies" means. I assume in order to re-upload the audio, I would have to visit SME's website and find a PD release, which has a snowball's chance in hell of actually succeeding. And this is why there aren't any (good) music recordings on Commons. Well, thanks for your time. At least I won't be wondering about it anymore. Compassionate727 (T·C) 02:30, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Your suppositions sound reasonable to me. With regards to the "1 Music Rights Societies", it probably means "one (unspecified) performance rights organisation / copyright collective" (for the U.S. probably ASCAP). —RP88 (talk) 04:08, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Getting an Image Reviewed

Hi All,

I uploaded an image a week ago but it's still not reviewed. Is there a way to contact an admin to get it reviewed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ziyadforbes (talk • contribs) 06:38, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Which image is this? De728631 (talk) 06:45, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
@Ziyadforbes: Judging from your uploads and edits, it should be File:خلود العميان.jpg. The image has actually been reviewed by our email support team, but the permission that came by email was found insufficient. The content of these permission emails is confidential so we cannot answer any details here, but DarwIn can tell you more about this. De728631 (talk) 08:12, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Yes.Darwin flagged the permission details insufficient.hence I contacted the permission team by email and followed the instructions of Paulo

Santos Perneta. He adviced me to get an email sent from the original owner of the image which I did 2 days ago. I was since waiting for it to get approved but there were no additional response from the team. Ziyadforbes (talk) 08:26, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

I see. Unfortunately the email team is chronically understaffed. We're all volunteers here and the OTRS team has a huge backlog. The current backlog in permissions-commons queue is 7 days.. That means that the file may even get deleted for procedural reasons after some time, but when the permission has been approved, the file will be restored and marked as valid. De728631 (talk) 08:32, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
I understand and I appreciate the work you guys are doing to keep wikipedia moving. If it was a normal article or soemthing I would've just ignored and waited for infinity time. But the thing is this involves the CEO of my company and it's my duty to get it fixed. While you and I can understand the difficulty it is hard to discuss and convince a C level employee why such a small thing keeps on dragging and it will be seen as a shortcoming of mine. I hope you understand the situation Iam in.It would be great if you could have a look at the image and verify it. Ziyadforbes (talk) 08:42, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Verification of these OTRS mails can only be done by OTRS people, and they usually do not cut in the queue because that would be unfair to those who have waited much longer than you. But maybe DarwIn or others can make an exception and check the current status. De728631 (talk) 09:16, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Commons

Hi there, and welcome to Commons. Wikimedia Commons is a repository that provides educational media files that can be used by anyone for any purpose. A core purpose is also to serve as a central image repository for Wikipedia. You might want to read Commons:Project scope for a comprehensive description. De728631 (talk) 08:04, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding Mayank Gandi Profile Pic.jpg

The file is my work floating around internet with no copyrights.Suggest me how to upload it

--Npz108 (talk) 10:32, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Npz108: The filter you encountered prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. If you did indeed personally create this image, the expectation is that you should be able to provide a full-resolution version rather than a 225×225 miniature version downloaded from Twitter. LX (talk, contribs) 10:48, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Categorizing Pages

In the Wikimedia Commons, when I visited this link, I was able to see that many categories can be added by my own. But when I visited many of the similar pages, I was able to know that the pages for which I need to add a category is actually part of another main category. My question is: Is there any problem if I create categories with the name on the red link without subcategorising it(since I don't know exactly to which subcategory it belongs to)? Adithyak1997 (talk) 17:50, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

What categories do you want to create? Ruslik (talk) 20:28, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

The correct link is Special:WantedCategories. LX (talk, contribs) 21:58, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
@Adithyak1997: : You should not create orphan categories; if you do not know enough to place the newly created category in the category tree it may be better to leave it be. However if you can find a reasonably related parent category you can use that (for example, you know which city the category would belong, but not the exact quarter/neighborhood). Is it fine to use image from Instagram — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lovedove2019 (talk • contribs) 17:16, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Updating Blank Maps

Hi,

I have recently produced a new world map for the Wikipedia 60 Meter Band page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60-meter_band, which I have also made available on Wikimedia Commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_World_of_5_MHz.png.

As is the nature of the 60 Meter Band website and map, from time-to-time I will need to update the map with new countries that gain official 60 Meter operating privileges. Those already permitted are shown in yellow.

This week news reached me that Paraguay was the latest country and so I updated my own copy of the map on my PC. However when I tied to upload it, the upload wizard indicated that it was not happy with trying to overwrite the current map on the webpage.

As this updating of the map is going to be an on-going task, can you advise me please on what is the best way to go about performing this function.

Many Thanks

Paul Gaskell Paul Gaskell (talk) 21:00, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Judging from the latest revision of this file it looks like you could eventually upload your new map. I.e. Paraguay is now also coloured yellow. De728631 (talk) 12:02, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

thank you, De728631. It now seems to have updated itself overnight as the new Paraguay insert is now showing when the map is opened up on the 60 Meter Band page.Paul Gaskell (talk) 16:40, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Google Maps Edited?

To whom it may concern:

I am editing an article and adding a section on transportation and I wanted to use a graphic to help readers understand a certain intersection a bit better. I took a screenshot of an area on Google Maps and edited using Google Slides (inserted shapes and text) to create a final image. Would this be a copyright issue since I took a screenshot from Google Maps or would it be my own work since I edited the picture on Google Slides? If this is an issue, what would be the best way for me to find a map to edit without copyright infringement?

Thanks for the help, TheWikiWizard88 — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheWikiWizard88 (talk • contribs) 04:47, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Google Maps images are copyrighted and non-free, so editing and publishing them would in fact be a copyright infringement. You can download maps from OpenStreetMap, however, which can be freely used and edited. Once you are ready for upload, you may use the {{OpenStreetMap}} template to describe your new file. So, when you click the upload link, don't select the Upload Wizard, but go to Upload Form: "It is entirely my own work". In the "Summary" field, you can then replace the default text with this:
{{OpenStreetMap
|location = <Name of the town>
|description = <What is the map about?>
|date = <when did you create this?>
|authors = OpenStreetMap contributors, TheWikiWizard88
}}
That should do it. De728631 (talk) 05:47, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

File:DFO Logo.svg shows a generic SVG preview

@Hello71: You didn't specify any units for width and height in the document settings. I've fixed that and also added an opaque background. De728631 (talk) 20:08, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
{ping|De728631}} The units are right in the first 100 bytes of the file: <svg height=".417118in" viewBox="0 0 362.13032 30.032527" width="5.029588in"Hello71 17:32, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Well, for some reason Inkscape did not recognise any such units, and when I set them there, the thumbnail preview in Commons worked. Other than your initial upload, my later versions also got an XML declaration in the beginning that was apparently added by Inkscape: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> So maybe this is needed for the Commons thumbnail software. I don't know though, what else could've been wrong. De728631 (talk) 20:18, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Query on asking permission from news outlet to put image in WC?

Is it useless to ask permission from a news media outlet to use an image for an article via Open-source Ticket Request System? Ominae (talk) 08:59, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Ominae: It depends on whether they agree or not, doesn't it? :)
There are news agencies in Brazil and Iran that publish most or all of their content under a free license, and there are government-funded news organisations in several countries whose content is in the public domain. Major commercial news organisations are typically less likely to be willing or able to release their content, but asking never hurt anyone. Just make sure you follow the instructions at Commons:OTRS so that the permission you ask for is actually one that we can use. LX (talk, contribs) 11:03, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Tried to do so before, but no one ever got back to me. (-_-) Ominae (talk) 11:53, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Because for profit companies don't produce a product then give it away for free. Better alternative is to look for privately produced content elsewhere, YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, Google Images etc. These allow free license filtering.--BevinKacon (talk) 13:21, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
That's the first time I heard of YT and Vimeo being suggested as an alternative. I'll find time to ask though for a Myanmar-related article. Ominae (talk) 13:23, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Original Alice in Wonderland/ Through the Looking Glass

Hi,

I'm interested in reusing some of the original Alice in Wonderland/ Through the Looking Glass Images Tenniel images for commercial use- specifically, for use in pet accessories.

The images will be accompanied by up to 11 words of original text.

The guidelines/FAQs are many, and are either very general, or too specific for a lot of different uses- of which I actually can't say I understand first of all, but also they seem to often describe situations other than the one I am interested in solving.

I don't even know where to start, and I'd like to honor whatever agreements exist.

If there is any help to be had, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thanks very much! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.251.40.241 (talk) 17:04, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Hey anon. Regarding these images, the short answer is that to use them, all you have to do is use them. That's it. John Tenniel died in 1914, and both books are near 150 years old, so the images should be in the public domain for pretty much any jurisdiction in the world. GMGtalk 17:17, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Finding an image

There is this image that I found in althistory.wikia of a reconstructed Imperial Inca banner that apparently is sourced from Wikimedia project. Looking around with tineye, I found several matches, however after clicking the respective link the only result is the current used version of the banner in commons; which is frankly much uglier (and inaccurate).

Now, I am not sure why tineye is failing to see the differences between the images or if the image from althistory.wikia is indeed in Commons somewhere; but I would really appreciate some help with finding where it came from--Plank (talk) 20:46, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

We did have a version like the one at althistory.wikia, but it was deleted as copyright infringement. Anyhow, the snapshot seems to have survived in TinEye's cache which is why you're still getting hits for it. I also did a search with TinEye and on page 2 it came up with this design from Devianart which seems to be the original non-free source. That said, the licence at althistory.wikia is bogus. The Commons file never had a GFDL licence tag (deleted versions included). De728631 (talk) 08:47, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

PD licensing for images already having a license

Hello, I'm having problems resolving a licensing issue for some images. I made a Featured Article nomination and apparently some of the images depicting buildings and works of art need a PD license tag specifically for the United States. In particular, I'm File:Sofia - Odrysian Wreath from Golyamata Mogila.jpg needs a US PD tag, but there doesn't seem to be an appropriate one. This is not a 2D work of art nor a building. I've looked through all the tags in Category:PD US license tags and none of those looks adequate. The images of buildings are covered by a Freedom of Panorama tag I made ({{FoP-Bulgaria}}), but I don't really know which US PD tag to use on this image. How to post an image to the piece about the Gulf Stream (History part)

caption goes here

I downloaded (to the commons) from the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Collection a photo of Ben Franklin's first Gulf Stream chart printed in London in 1769 (cropped northwestern part of "Franklin-Folger chart of the Gulf Stream", LOC No:88696412). I would like to add it as the first illustration in the Wikipedia piece about the Gulf Stream (History part). I can't figure out how to do this and need help. I received permission from the LOC to use this image and the LOC says "Publication authorized by Benjamin Franklin and Timothy Folger". I do not think there is a copyright problem. This image was recently published by Philip L. Richardson and Nathan T. Adams in Historic Nantucket, Spring 2018, vol 68(1) pp. 17-24 with permission from the LOC. The Gulf Stream (History) piece already includes a chart of the Gulf Stream which was published later by Franklin in 1786 in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. I think the article needs to include the first printed chart in addition to the third (1786) one. If possible I would like the two charts to be the same size. I made a few changes to the Gulf Stream (History) article and would now like to add Franklin's first chart of the Stream to complete the modifications. Mainly I have tried to clarify the piece about the three versions of the Franklin chart, which are historically important. There has been confusion about the three different charts and about the inset in the 1786 version, which is now explained. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Plrichardson7212 (talk • contribs) 14:55, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Okay...I'm confused

At Category:William B. McKinley I'm getting a default sort conflict, but...I'm not totally sure where it's coming from. There's only one instance of Template:DEFAULTSORT on the category, and the only other think I can think of is that it's pulling something over from WD via Template:Wikidata infobox, but I don't see anything at WD that look like it should have that effect. Halp. GMGtalk 15:25, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Ok, no, it's definitely something that's getting pulled over from WD. I just don't know why. GMGtalk 15:30, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, this is WD's fault since it puts the entry for "given name" (William) into its own defaultsort. However, at the category page, {{Wikidata Infobox |defaultsort=no}} fixed the issue. De728631 (talk) 15:36, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
Hmm...I was looking at WD for a default sort property, but I guess I should have been looking on the template for a default sort parameter. Seems intuitive that the infobox should default to defaultsort=no if one is already present on the page. No idea how technically difficult that would be to implement though. Please look at "File:Intersection downtown Huwei.jpg". 18 categories?! Is there any good reason why we need to put so many categories on images?--Kai3952 (talk) 09:31, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Actually there is, in this case we have some mistakes, but to ameliorate the search around topics, it's a good practice to have all elements categorized.
In a near future, we will have better ways to do that, including machine readable data, but this stills a good way to find specifics types of image. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 16:25, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
So you think it is useful to have a category about cobblestones on an image that shows no cobblestones, to have both Category:Traffic lights at red state in Taiwan and the redundant Category:Traffic lights in Taiwan, to have a category about utility poles on every image where one is incidentally present? I entirely disagree. - Jmabel ! talk 16:32, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Help need

Hello! In Republic of Srpska there is a photo-competition Trace of Soul 2018 in progress. Yesterday and today we receive a few e-mails from competitors - they complained that they have a problem with photo upload. We have tested, and in third step, after release rights a page got "freezes". Does anyone know what is the problem? We really need help. Thanks! --Bojana Wiki PG (talk) 11:53, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Image mistakenly uploaded - not free of copyright restrictions - help!

A while ago I uploaded to Commons a copy of one of my photos of my sculpture, assuming that I owned the copyright because I owned the sculpture. It is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:O%27Connor_Sculpture_%26_Book.jpg.

But, I have since discovered that under Australian copyright law owning the sculpture does not give me ownership of the copyright:

INFORMATION SHEET G033v17 January 2017: Artists & Copyright

“Ownership of copyright is separate from ownership of the physical item. Buying a picture, book, photograph or CD does not give you rights to copy it.”

“Where copyright in an artwork is jointly owned, permission is usually required from each owner.”

PLEASE tell me how to get the image removed from Wikipedia Commons as it is incorrect for it to up there. I've asked several people who are Commons Admins but no-one's replying ...

I want to do the right thing.

SurveyorMJF, next time that you have copyright issues use: Commons:Village Pump/Copyright, you will be better attended.
For cases like that, where there is a clear copyright violation, the best acting is to include the template {{copyvio|the reason}}
Flagging the file as this, a sysop will check and exclude if necessary. Do not need a discussion around things that are black or white, we need discussions to grey situations.

Does colorization of an old monochrome photo create a separate copyright?

Hi! I have this question regarding one certain photo of a person, that exists on Commons in a monochrome version, and on the internet in colorized version. The latter one had been uploaded to uk-wiki with a wrong license stated. Can it be transferred to Commons as PD-old?--Piramidion (talk) 11:16, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Hey Piramidion. It looks like, at least in the US, these might be okay. Per this (see also this), the US Copyright Office ruled in the 80s that colorized films could be copyrighted, but that copyright would not be granted for colorizing only a few frames. I'm also seeing a few places where a case of Sargent v. American Greetings Corp is cited as establishing that colorization of a pencil drawing is not itself eligible for copyright. This would only apply to US images though. I'd be interested to hear additional input from others. GMGtalk 15:21, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
I suspect this question should be taken to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is usually a lot more expertise on copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
i suspect that if the colorization is by algorithm, it might be judged "not creative" but if by hand (paint by numbers) if might be creative. such are the facile distinctions of judges. very little case law. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 02:28, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: It's all about this file: uk:Файл:Аль Капоне1930.jpg (this one exists on Commons). I also found this article regarding these exact colorized photos. --Piramidion (talk) 05:55, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
@Igorkhait: Did you colorize this photo? If so, where? If not, who did and where did you get it?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:09, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
@Piramidion: Based on that article, it appears that the colorization was done by Jecinci at mediadrumworld.com (based in the UK with high TOO), and that person watermarked the images in that article with a copyright statement. I would venture to guess that the brow of that person sweat some during the process.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:19, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
OK, I'll delete that photo then. Thanks for your help!--Piramidion (talk) 17:50, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
@Piramidion: go over to the photography workshop and request colorization. It helps if you can provide links to actual color photos or paintings (not colorized) of the subject. I've done it before (knowing what I know now I probably wouldn't have overwritten the original, but reverting now will only create more disruption). It's a lot of work though. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:09, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Using Wikipedia Commons images for commerical purposes

My name is Chris Chiaverina. I'm co-authoring the second edition of a physics textbook and wish to use Wikipedia Commons images in the book. I must say, I'm quite confused. I would greatly appreciate it if you would address the following questions:

1) How do I know if an image may be used commercially?

2) Is it legal to use a photograph of artwork that resides in a museum or is on display indoors or outdoors? For example, can I use a photo of sculpture by a living artist?

3) How do I properly credit artwork found on Wikimedia?

4) Does Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license or Gnu licensing allow me to use the art and, if so, which, if both are listed, do I include them in the credit.

Thank you very much for addressing my questions.

Chris — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:240:4201:7A40:E0E2:17C2:B703:82DC (talk) 19:54, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

My answers are:
  1. Any image on Commons can be used commercially (subject to the attribution requirements).
  2. It depends (See Commons:FoP).
  3. See Commons:Attribution
  4. I suggest that you use a CC license.
Ruslik (talk) 20:20, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Is Ruslik0 aware of Category: Copyright by Wikimedia? Moreover, many images on Commons have various non-copyright restrictions of use, in some cases making a legal commercial use virtually impossible. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 21:24, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Please read our propaganda
My answers are:
  1. All images on Commons can be used commercially.. assuming the license wasn't laundered. There is no simple answer to how you can check that. Laundered images shouldn't be here, but the matter of fact is they are.
  2. Images on Commons are required to be free both in the United States and the country of origin. If you are are publishing elsewhere, check with your local laws. You probably want to be careful anyway, there are (for example) plenty of images of artworks on Commons from countries without (sufficient) FoP.
  3. 2D works: credit the artist. 3D works: credit the photographer and artist.
  4. Both allow you to, but "Gnu licensing" (I assume you mean w:GNU Free Documentation License) may be less than ideal, see our propaganda..
You may want to consider hiring a jurist to confirm the images you want to use can be used the way you want to. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:36, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
By the way: if you can't afford a legal expert, I'm willing to look at the images you want to use. I am not a legal expert, but quite frequently mistaken for one and can probably give you useful advice in this field. I don't ask for money, instead, I would ask you to release a part of the textbook with a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. (the other authors would have to agree to that too) It's an offer, nothing more. If you're interested you should register an account here. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:48, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Creating a new category

I would like to create a new category: Fully feathered baskets. Reading through the directions, I am unable to understand how to do this. Can someone please advise me? It would be much appreciated.Hu Nhu (talk) 05:18, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Thanks, I think I got it. Hope I did it right. I see that you invited me to ping you. I do not know what it means to ping. Is it what I did at the beginning of this edit text? If not, then what does it mean? Thanks for your help. I am still learning much.Hu Nhu (talk) 16:42, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
@Hu Nhu: Here is what you did:
  1. In these three edits, you added nonexistent Category:Fully feathered baskets to Category:Native American baskets, Category:Native American tribes in California, and Category:Baskets. This was backwards, I was discussing creation of Category:Fully feathered baskets and adding one of those categories to it (that is, putting it in one of those categories).
  2. In this edit, you uploaded File:Fully feathered basket Santa Roas College.jpg and added it to categories Category:Baskets, Category:Native American tribes in California, Category:Art, Category:Santa Rosa, California, Category:Marin County, California, and Category:Sonoma County, California, but not to Category:Fully feathered baskets. I think you misspelled "Roas".
  3. In this edit, you uploaded File:Pomo fully feathered basket jpg.jpg and added it to categories Category:Pomo, Category:Pomo baskets, Category:Art, Category:Baskets, Category:Marin County, California, Category:Sonoma County, California, Category:Sonoma, and Category:Santa Rosa, California, but not to Category:Fully feathered baskets. I think you added "jpg" one too many times.
Why the different counties?
My concern at the moment is licensing of the underlying basket (a 3D artwork) in your photos. What do you know about artist Suzanne Holder's lifetime? Is it fair to assume that she created this basket in California, or at least the US? If she is still alive, did she grant a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license for your photo of her 3D artwork? Did the Jesse Peter museum grant it? Please review COM:DW. Without a means of access to the inside of the basket, it appears not to be a utilitarian article.
Your ping was almost perfect, you just included a superfluous vertical bar "|" at the end. You could separate your signature from your writings by placing a space before your signature.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:27, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

I would like to upload a photo I've taken of a book I own. Would it be acceptable to upload an image of a page from within a book? Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 15:37, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Hey KJP1. You can upload an image of the cover locally on the English Wikipedia under a claim of fair use, by using the Upload Wizard there. Select This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. and then fill in the fields telling what the image is about and where it will be used. The caveat there is that for it to qualify for fair use, the book needs to have its own article.GMGtalk 18:04, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
You don't say what book, but the usual answer would be no. Unless either the image is so simple that it cannot be copyrighted, or you have some specific basis on which you know the image is no longer copyrighted, you should not upload it to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 20:01, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Adding photo of wikipedia page?

Hi. I'm uploading a photo of a small section of main page on Wikipedia (the "Welcome to Wikipedia" bit) that shows the sub pixels of my monitor. Would I have to release it under the GFDL/CC BY-SA 3.0 license configuration? Abequinn14 (talk) 21:57, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

@Abequinn14: it depends on what's being displayed, I suppose. The Wikipedia logo is trademarked and the MediaWiki software, which powers Wikipedia, is licensed GPL, while Wikipedia text is licensed CC BY-SA 3.0 and some is also licensed under the GFDL (see Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content).
I don't think there's anything copyrightable about the phrase "Welcome to Wikipedia", if that's all you're focusing on, but you could use the template {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} to cover all your bases; otherwise CC BY-SA 3.0 by itself should also be okay, since text dual-licensed GFDL/CC BY-SA 3.0 can be used under either license. clpo13(talk) 16:11, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Afaik the large "logo" in the center is not a traditional heraldic charge but it looks like it was made up by someone for this cosplay sessions. The ancient arms and flag of France were "Azure semée-de-lis or", i.e. a blue field with lots of golden lilies. White banners were only introduced in the 17th century 200 years after Joan of Arc. You do not have the permission to review images, this edit was therefore disabled.

...This is not the result I was hoping to get after 20 minutes of sorting through a mostly useless Flickr feed to find what images were in scope. Make it stop. GMGtalk 17:02, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Wut. I tried again and now it says the first one was successfully uploaded, and all the rest still have errors displayed, but when I click on my watchlist they've now all been uploaded. I'm confused. GMGtalk 17:59, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

(Dutch) question about rights release

hello everybody,

i have a question about the lease of rights on this webiste: ScoutGallery.

it states that if you credit "Foto: Scouting Nederland" than the photos are rights free.

my question is this way of releasing right compatible with wiki commons.

thanks in advance,

--Wvdp (talk) 09:44, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Wvdp, I just took a look at the Flickr photostream of the scouting, and it is using the all rights reserved template. The photos should be licensed with a Creative Commons license (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA) to be suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Why not contact the scouts and ask them to change the license on Flickr to CC-BY? This way, they can still have the desired attribution, and it makes the pictures easy to transfer to Commons. See: Category:Economic inequality. How can I get Template:Categorise to allow itself to be wrapped around like {{see also cat}}? I believe the change needs to occur at Template:Categorise/layout. Is there a width parameter that allows this wrapping?

Batch renaming files?

Hi all, is there a way to batch rename files in a certain category? For example in Category:Photographs_by_Cord_Otting, the files have a accidentally been uploaded with a none descriptive filename which should be replaced with the information in the 'title' field (which is also not applicable to these pictures). I can off course rename them all manually, but I am just curious to see if there is a faster/smarter way. Hope you can help me, thank you so much in advance! MichellevanLanschot (talk) 12:59, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi MichellevanLanschot. Yes, User:Perhelion/massrename.js exists. Nevertheless you cannot rename them yourself, because you are not a file mover. You can either apply to become one at COM:RFR or ask a file mover to rename those files for you. 4nn1l2 (talk) 13:10, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi 4nn1l2, thanks for clarifying the proccess! I am going to manually request file changes for the images in the mentioned category, and next time apply to become a file mover. MichellevanLanschot (talk) 08:05, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Liferay-logo-full-color-2x.png

Hello, I uploaded a new company logo and product image to update this page: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liferay Although I red the Wikimedia Commons guidelines, I didn't understand how to add a proper copyright tag to the images.

The images were provided by the company and are copyright of Liferay Inc, Could you please tell me how to proceed to make sure these new images stay on the page?

Many thanks, Sherazade

This logo is actually too simple to be copyrighted, so I added the appropriate licence tag to the file. De728631 (talk) 12:05, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

where do old village pump posts go?

Hello,

I had a post on the Graphics Village Pump and when I checked to see if there had been any more discussion on it I found that it appears to have aged off the front page of that section. But I don't see any subsequent (earlier) post pages. And there's a year's gap between current posts and the most recent archive.

Where do posts go when they are pushed off the first page? Am I just being dim and missing an obvious link here? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2600:1702:2150:40A0:C8A3:55DF:205B:2AB (talk) 17:19, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

The archive links for the graphics village pump are at the top of that page, organized by the month the discussion took place in. The pages for July and August 2018 are missing, which means that no discussions from those months have yet been archived. The most recently archived discussions can be found on the June archive page, so that's probably where you'll want to look first. There's also a search box for the archives towards the top of the page that you can use if you can't find the discussion by month. clpo13(talk) 17:50, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Copyright question

If I write something such as a series of questions for a short quiz, then is it in the public domain until I register it for copyright? (I found some things originally written casually by teachers from elementary school, mid-2000s, and want to publish them to the public domain.) PseudoSkull (talk) 21:23, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

  • You don't mention what country, but in any signatory of the Berne Convention -- which I believe now includes all but a handful of the world's countries -- copyrightable works are copyrighted by default. The U.S. was late to this (1978), and prior to that had a registration-based system, but even in the U.S. this is now policy. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Uploading Order of Battle Images

Does anyone know how I can upload military order of battle images? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryan120202 (talk • contribs) 21:50, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Please look at "File:View of portal of the New Yongchun Tunnel in Hualien.jpg". I thought it was odd too as it is not like that for other images(File:IMAG4297.jpg, File:Shen'ao Line NO.1 Tunnel.JPG, File:TRA New Shanli Tunnel 2014-09-07.jpg, etc.). I assume the dispute is over the usage of "Category:Rail tunnel portals in Taiwan".--Kai3952 (talk) 07:11, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

What I want to ask is, if there are no problems with other images, why do we add "Rail tunnel portals in Taiwan" category to this image(File:View of portal of the New Yongchun Tunnel in Hualien.jpg)?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:34, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
Why not? --Magnus (talk) 09:57, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, why not? The subject of a category does not need to the be the main subject of the image. It is totally sufficient that a tunnel portal is part of the scene shown in the image. De728631 (talk) 11:13, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:EYP.ROI.Session.Map.jpg

Hi, The file EYP.ROI.Sessions.Map.jpg is publicly usable as it is a graphic that was created by the European Youth Parliament for educational reuse. I don’t know how to update the licensing on it? How can it be done?

Thanks

--Theclownfromit (talk) 09:49, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

@Theclownfromit: Please provide a weblink to the exact site where you found this image, so we can check the copyright status. Unless a generally free licence was granted for this map, I'm afraid we cannot keep it. All uploads at Commons must be free for anyone to use for any purpose, so a restriction to educational use would be insufficient. De728631 (talk) 11:29, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

The Apple Daily states that Jay Chou achieved a honours degree from National Taiwan University of Arts. I've been trying to verify this, but I can't find any mention of him or his honours degree on the website of the Alumni Association Center of NTUA. I am not sure if I should add Category:Alumni of the National Taiwan University of Arts to Category:Jay Chou.--Kai3952 (talk) 18:45, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

I believe it's an honorary degree, awarded by the university without any actual attendance. This is different from an honours degree which is earned by attending and meeting high academic standards. His Wikipedia article has a few sources saying he didn't attend university, so he's not an alumnus. Guanaco (talk) 19:18, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952: It appears that Rodrigo.Argenton is working to save the many freely licensed images at 500px, which were taken down without warning due to corporate greed. It would be much better if they were categorized, but these images do appear to be in scope. I would suggest discussing this with Rodrigo, and take it to COM:AN/U if you think he must be stopped. The help desk isn't a good place to discuss these matters. Guanaco (talk) 19:38, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Kai3952,
Commons:500px licensing data
It's a workflow: I'm importing images all inside the scope (manually selecting), and after it we will manage the name, the categories, description.
However we are in a wiki, in a community, having people better than me in categorizing, more capable to identify locations, etc, people that would not do this importation process, so we spread the chores and the humankind wins. That's how we do things, collaboratively, together.
Next time, I strongly suggest to you use this via: User talk:Rodrigo.Argenton. You did not even tag me...

It depends what you mean by "location".
If you mean geocoordinates of the object location, use {{Object location}}.
If you mean geocoordinates of the camera location, use {{Location}}
If you mean something like "New Bond Street in London", just add the appropriate category (in that case Category:New Bond Street, London).
If you mean something else entirely, you'll need to restate that.

Why is the preposition used with "Lamay Island" is "in"?--Kai3952 (talk) 04:33, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

I think we should use "in" for political boundaries and "on" for geographical features.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:05, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
The only circumstance I can see where the choice would make any meaningful difference would be of an island that also has an administrative district named after it, but we usually disambiguate those anyway: Foos in Bar Island Province or Foos in Bar Island (municipality) as compared to Foos on Bar Island, so the preposition doesn’t carry the semantic burden, so to speak. In general I don’t see much benefit in enforcing a standard. (There are also some dialectical differences; for example in UK English a building or address is said to be in a street, while in North America it’s on.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:27, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
I think it depends on the size of the island. I would write "Ventnor is on the Isle of Wight" but "Belfast is in Ireland". (In classical Latin, it was "in" for Rhodes and any smaller Island, and use of the ablative for any larger island.) Maproom (talk) 14:54, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Justified that this is not a free file - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Puancetia How to download a file and where to register that it is not free so it will not be deleted? @Jeff G.: Thanks for the ping. This is a block on meta.wikimedia.org; as such it should be discussed on said project. The block was issued on the user previous username. He's later requested a rename to his current username. I am not fully convinced the username is really appropriate even for meta, but I have unblocked the account given that the rename was approved and I see no other blocks on other projects for now. The account Rick Mariner at HaywireCustomGuitars (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log) is not blocked here on Wikimedia Commons, though it is on Meta-Wiki. In order to request an unblock there, you should add the code {{unblock|reason ~~~~}}to your Meta-Wiki user talk page (see meta:Template:Unblock). clpo13(talk) 23:11, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
That account is now unblocked on meta.wikimedia.org as well following his approved request for unblock. I am, however, not convinced it's fully compliant with meta-wiki custom on usernames but lacking a policy and seeing that there's no blocks on other projects I've lifted the block. —MarcoAurelio 22:12, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I uploaded the following file: File:Frese GP 2016©silvanoballone-178.jpg and it was deleted because the source was unclear. @ActorsArt: Please ask the photographer to send a permission by email. The instructions can be found at Commons:OTRS. "Enter" key in Edit summary or Subject of new section

Edit summary + enter is still working for me. De728631 (talk) 20:50, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
Coincidentally, after accidentally hitting  Enter instead of the ' key beside it while typing a summary yet again, I was going to investigate why/how this is and how to change it. It's really undesirable (for me at least) to accidentally post an incomplete summary and/or edits. There's already a shortcut (Alt+ Shift+s) to the Publish button. Any ideas on changing it? Maybe some js that changes the focus or default action to the (mostly harmless) preview button? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:32, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Wikidata link notifications

How do I disable notifications for "this category you created has been linked to Wikidata!"? I've created a lot of small-locality geocategories (e.g. Category:Ludlow Township, Washington County, Ohio) and am getting lots of notifications every day. If I go into my preferences and find "Notify me about these events", I see that "failed mention", "successful mention", "page link", "connection with Wikidata", and "edit revert" all have both boxes unchecked. Presumably this means that the notification has be disabled some other way. Nyttend (talk) 01:41, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

@Nyttend: If you have "Show notifications from other wikis" enabled in your Commons preferences, then Wikidata will notify you directly across all wikis. So you need to switch off "connection with Wikidata" in your Wikidata preferences. De728631 (talk) 14:50, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Related question: when I get a notification like "Category:Strada Șelari and 6 other [categories] have been linked to Wikidata", is there some systematic way to see the 6 other categories? Without that, the notification isn't much use. If I click on it, it takes me to Category:Strada Șelari. - Jmabel ! talk 06:43, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Jmabel, at the bottom of your notifications dropdown, click the "All notifications" option. This will take you to a page that lists all of the linked-to-Wikidata items individually. Nyttend (talk) 10:51, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

What tag to use for company images?

Hello,

I uploaded a product image last week but it was deleted for copyright violation. The image name is: File:Liferay-dxp-2018.png The aim of this image is to update the product image that is featured on this page: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liferay The current one is outdated and shown in Japanese instead of French or English.

The "Liferay-dxp-2018.png" image was provided by Liferay Inc (owner of the product) which I work for. I therefore have the right to use it to update all official company information.

Could you please tell me what tag should I use or how can I do to get this image back?

Keele University Shield

Hello, I need some help here. There is a shield posted on the Keele University website which I would like to upload on wikimedia and add to an Infobox on the main university page on wikipedia.

https://www.keele.ac.uk/thekeeleoralhistoryproject/keeleheraldrycoloursandscarves/

As I understand Wikimedia allows the upload of work that is not free content, under a fair use rationale.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload/Uploadtext/en-nonfree-logo

I believe the university shield comes under these terms. Can anyone confirm? I recently reproduced the image in MS Paint but, in doubt, deleted the image pending further advice.

I also see elsewhere that many users upload university shields using these terms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BirminghamUniversityCrest.svg

Many Thanks.

Datei:Hildegard_(Felizitas)_Beetz_1943.jpg

--NBarchiv (talk) 16:01, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Winter 1942/43 in Rome: my mother has a photo taken of herself - for her then fiancée Gerhard Beetz.

It's called a 'long-distance relationship' today: he's on the eastern front - she's in Italy ...

until the year 1969 (the visit of Duilio Susmel and two other Italians who had previously stalked them) It was known to me as 'family owned', and I wondered why it had disappeared since then. a few weeks ago (I had the estate (24 removal boxes!) again durchforstet more accurate), I found the original photo again. it came 1996 in a very regretfully apologized letter of prof. Renzo Santinon from Rome, posing as 'The younger of two journalists' outete, who had then appeared with Susmel in Bonn for a first interview.

the first photo 'felizitas.jpg' had a much worse quality (clearly 'newspaper print', with exaggerated contrast). I recognized it right away and then was amazed when Erich Kuby's book came out in 1982 with just that bad copy. Erich Kuby: Treachery in German. How the Third Reich ruined Italy . Hamburg, Hoffmann and Campe 1982, ISBN 3-455-08754-X, pp. 280ff. (see also: in the picture section from p.336, from the local "picture credits" is not out, with which authority this photo could be printed: -> illustration proof S. 569)

In march 2007 I started the article 'Hilde Purwin' and immediately received many comments from all over the world - including dr. de: Lutz_Klinkhammer, the head of the department 'german-italian relations' in DHI. He then visited me personally in Bonn-Endenich to take OSS - original documents. (and later a second time to return the unneeded documents). I had to go back then with the

content copy in the book and retouch the printed text on the bottom right. this photo can also be found on en_wiki and it_wiki.

Hi, @Jeff G.: I asked for a free photo for Wikipedia DYK through a chat room on essentrics.com. It came by email from the Marketing & Public Relations Director of Essentrics. The photographer Jimmy Hamelin was identified in that mail. The subject is a Canadian resident of Montreal. I don't know when it was taken. I gave it an attribution license because the source gave me the author's name. Do I have to ask OTRS to record permissions? The last time I looked they had a nine month backlog. @SusanLesch: That tool helps you create the email message to permissions-commons.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 02:49, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Sorry. I was dreaming somebody invented drive-by, push button permissions. -SusanLesch (talk) 02:54, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@SusanLesch: You could mention it in your next reply to Ticket:2018022410006242.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:03, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
I am a lapsed OTRS volunteer so cannot read that. Anyway I sent permission mail and removed the deletion flags. Thanks for your help. -SusanLesch (talk) 03:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@SusanLesch: Good luck with that.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:12, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Found href to unsafe data

Hi there! I was trying to upload a derivative work of this file, from which I translated the text. I opened the SVG with Photoshop (I don't have any vector editor in my computer), translated it, and tried to upload, using derivativeFX. When I did that, an error was returned, which I will copy below. Is there something I can do? I don't know too much (near nothing) on vector graphics. Thanks in advance! @Guilhermebm: the text data:img/png;base64,ivborw0kggoaaaan... indicates an embedded raster graphic encoded in base64. The SVG renderer Wikimedia sites uses will work with embedded graphics but not with links to external image resources, which is what's happening here. I don't know why it turned an embedded graphic into an external link, but ideally, the original SVG should be edited to remove the embedded graphic entirely. The embedded image is data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAgAAAAICAAAAADhZOFXAAAAAXNCSVQI5gpbmQAAAA5JREFUCJlj+M8AAxSxAB83B/mkB+5iAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC, which is just a diagonal line turned into a pattern to provide the hatching on the left side of the diagram. That should be fixed in the original before creating derivatives, but I'm not sure how best to do that. clpo13(talk) 00:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, @Clpo13: ! I had noticed the diagonal line had vanished when I opened the SVG using PS, and thought it was weird, but couldn't find a reason. I'll try using a vector editor and see what happens. Thanks again! Guilhermebm (talk) 00:12, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@Clpo13: I've solved it :D When I saved the SVG file on the vector editor, it asked me to either link or embed the files, and that was it! Thanks again for the help! Best regards, Guilhermebm (talk) 03:57, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@Guilhermebm: You're welcome! I'm glad I was able to help. clpo13(talk) 16:13, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Please look at "File:員林鎮靜修路平交道 - panoramio.jpg". The level crossing that used to exist on Jingxiu Road(靜修路), but has now been demolished. I found "Abolished level crossings" category on Wikimedia.commons. My question is: I'm not sure it can be regarded as "demolished level crossings" or not.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:39, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Not sure why we have "abolished". It's not a term in rail engineering use, at least not in the UK. Former level crossings is IMO adequate to describe this image. Rodhullandemu (talk) 08:42, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
I see. Thank you--Kai3952 (talk) 11:07, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Cropped version of existing image

I want to use a cropped version of File:St Mary, Bloxham, Oxon - Capital - geograph.org.uk - 1606470.jpg to highlight part of the decoration. I uploaded a new version of the file but it appeared that it over-wrote the original, so I reverted. What is the proper way to do this? I am not trying to replace the original, just add another version. Thanks, Leschnei (talk) 21:47, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Leschnei: When you want to crop an image you will find that the CropTool is very useful. It that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops, like the one you want to make, you should upload the copped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice.
