Flickr upload bot

File:Seattle - Andy's Diner, 1954.jpg: the image itself seems not to have arrived. I've done this sort of thing hundreds of times, so I'm 99.9% sure I did all the steps correctly. Any idea if there is anything I can do at this point other than reupload? - Jmabel ! talk 22:37, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

How to search for *only* PD, completely free for any use?

Hello!

Is there any way to search for images by license type? -- in particular, I would like to see only images that are *completely* free, with no attribution, no anything. As in creative commons CC0. PD *might* be OK, but I'd rather something where the rights holder *explicitly* made it fully free. I can't figure out how to do this after 20 minutes of looking. Nor can I find anything which says for certain that it is impossible.

I've seen suggestions to use Mayflower, which is dead. Is there anything newer?

I've read at least seven different help pages that touched on this topic, and none of the answers even addressed it properly, much less ended up being useful.

If it is _not_ possible, it would be nice for someone authoritative to say "Yes, I am completely certain that there is no way to do that." (as opposed to providing guesses.) At least then I would have some resolution ...

If you are specifically looking for images tagged with the CC-0 declaration (btw, I agree that it may be generally safer than non-universal and sometimes approximative PD tags), then such a specific search is fortunately much easier to do than a search for PD images in general. You can just add something like "cc-zero" to the topic of the search in the standard Commons search box. For example, if you are looking for CC-0 files about elephants, you can search "elephant cc-zero", which returns essentially the results of the ordinary topical search (with its usual forces and weaknesses), filtered to show only the pages containing "cc-zero". -- Asclepias (talk) 19:50, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
If you're just interested in browsing, there's always Category:CC-Zero, Category:Public domain, etc., though they are going to be so full that they aren't going to be practical if you're searching for a particular subject or topic. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 01:35, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

From that source, the copyright status is not immediately clear. You might bring this question to Commons:Village_pump/Copyright, where more people with copyright expertise are likely to weigh in. Lizens-Rechte

Liebes Wikimedia-Team, für einen Personen-Beitrag möchte ich ein Foto-Porträt hoch laden. Die Fotorechte liegen bei einem deutschen Museum. Dieses Museum hat mir die schriftliche Erlaubnis erteilt, allerdings nicht als freie Lizenz, wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe: 1) - "Die Genehmigung gilt ausschliesslich für folgende Verwendungszwecke: Beitrag zu ... in Wikipedia", 2) - "Die Vergabe der Nutzungsrechte ist an den vereinbarten Verwendungszweck gebunden. Jeder erneute oder anderweitige Gebrauch des Materials ist neu genehmigungspflichtig"

Meine Frage: Mit diesen Vertragseinschränkungen darf ich das Foto nicht in Wikimedia Commons hochladen ?

Replace JPEG with PNG not possible?

I am trying to update a JPEG image with a PNG (simple colour correction). However, when I try and replace it with my PNG I get an error stating that the mimetype doesn't match. I understand what that means, but does this mean it is it not possible to replace filetype X with filetype Y? I'd rather not re-save the image as JPEG as the quality's not great to begin with. Or should I create a new upload (seems daft as it is otherwise identical to the original)? Thanks. Ithinkitsnice (talk) 12:37, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

The short answer is no. We can't overwrite different file types. There are many instances where we have both JPG, PNG and sometimes GIF and SVG versions of basically the same image. It is unusual to create a PNG from a JPG unless the image should really have been a PNG all along. It is unusual to store photographs as PNGs and not the best practice to generate diagrams/illustrations etc as JPGs. If the image is a diagram etc, upload the PNG and mark the JPG as {{Superceded}}, if the image is a photograph then I would be suprised if the PNG generated from that would be better quality, but you can always save it as a JPG with a 100% quality setting (makes bigger files though). OK I understand the technical limitation, noted. I do understand the peculiarities of the formats well as I work in graphics. The reason I chose PNG was that the image was already crunchy, not particularly large, and repeated compression begins to hurt an image, so thought why not. Copyright help regarding File:Mikogo-logo-small.jpg

Hello,

I am Charlotte, employee at BeamYourScreen GmbH. I just noticed that the logo of our company has been added on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mikogo-logo-small.jpg) and I tried to send you an email on Wednesday, the 30th of June, to have a license for our logo.

However, I noticed that I chose the wrong licence for our logo. What we want is that our logo is available on Wikipedia, but that nobody has the right to modify it and to use it for commercial use. Can you please help me and tell me if the license CC-BY-SA is the right license to choose for what we want?

If not, can you please tell me which one is appropriate and how to do it (also on French Wikipedia)?

Hi Charlotte. I've taken the liberty of deleting the logo, as the terms you mentioned (no derivatives, non-commercial) are incompatible with Commons: all files here must be available for anyone to use, reuse, publish, edit or use commercially. I don't know about French wikipedia, but English wikipedia allows for the upload of such files under a "fair use" policy. Error uploading a file

I tried several times to upload a file to File:Tibere Fiorilli dit Scaramouche by Habert 1700 - Gallica.jpg, but on my most recent attempt, I got the following error message: "Could not move file mwstore://local-NFS/local-public/9/9a/Tibere_Fiorilli_dit_Scaramouche_by_Habert_1700_-_Gallica.jpg to mwstore://local-NFS/local-public/archive/9/9a/20120602100319!Tibere_Fiorilli_dit_Scaramouche_by_Habert_1700_-_Gallica.jpg." Replace Picture File

Please, delete my image "File:Grand piano seen from above - No commercials.jpg"

I am the uploader of the image File:Grand piano seen from above - No commercials.jpg, which is a derivative work of File:Bechstein D280 top view.jpg. When I uploaded my work File:Grand piano seen from above - No commercials.jpg I became aware of that my source (File:Bechstein D280 top view.jpg) probably is uploaded illegally. Will somebody please delete my image File:Grand piano seen from above - No commercials.jpg as soon as possible. I have problem with the licence. Which should it be? I know the author, she allowed me to upload this file on Wikimedia Commons.

The copyright holder should send permission to OTRS, see COM:OTRS. The file must be licensed under a specific free licence (just "permission for Wikimedia Commons" isn't enough). According to the file name, the file was uploaded to Facebook user 100001811526726 (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001811526726), so if this Facebook user is the copyright holder, it is this Facebook user who should send permission to OTRS. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:09, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:IFMSA SCOPE logo Professional.jpg

This is the official logotype of one of the Committees of International Federation of Medical Students' Associations, which is a student organisation. However, I do not know if it meets the {{PD-textlogo}} requirements? I don't think it consists only of letters and simple geometric shapes. What licence should i put here?

The "O" looks way too complex for {{PD-textlogo}}. You need to obtain permission from the copyright holder, see COM:OTRS. Otherwise, the file will have to be deleted. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:11, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Threshold of originality

Accounts for example to logos which only consist of letters of a common font so those are public domain. However, does this also work for foreign language logos, like japanese as here?--Trex2001 (talk) 04:26, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Language has nothing to do with it; one example we have here is a script created for a video game that was disapproved for copyright registration. The threshold of originality does vary a lot outside the US, and I don't know what it is in Japan.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:26, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Сегодня загрузил фото в статье "Сватош,Зенон Францевич", имя файла:Barguz3.jpg ‎. Данное фото взял в интернете, вот ссылка на сайт: Энтузиасты заповедного дела . Кроме этого сайта фото фигурирует и на несколько других сайтах.

На фото изображен Зенон Сватош, умерший в 1949 году. Само фото сделано в 1920-1930-х годах прошлого века. То есть по правилам Википедии, если фото сделано до 1942 года, то он является свободным. facebook-copyright

I need some help. I uploaded the picture File:Jenshergt2011.jpg and found it on facebook (Link). For all I know, pictures on facebook haven´t a copyright. Now i don´t know, which licens i should choose. It would be very nice, when I get some answers! Neuwied96 13:30, 3 June 2012 (CEST)

I need some guidance

I am a registered user of Wikimedia Commons and I want to upload the photo shown at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/758986 and name it as: CorytonRefineryFlares. As stated on that website page, it was photographed by Glyn Baker (the copyright holder) in 2008 under a Creative Commons license as on http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ ... in other words as CC BY-SA 2.0.

Could someone please tell me, step-by-step, how to upload that photo? A number of year ago, I uploaded many files using the "old form". But I am quite confused as to how to upload this photo under the current rules about what licenses are required to upload a file found on a website. Thanks much in advance. The steps through the upload wizard is of course "This file is not my own work." - provide source, author, select license "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative Commons license", select "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.5" because 2.0 is not longer offered in the upload wizard, later change it to 2.0 on the file description or let it. Broken TIFF needs a repair

Hi, I accidentally noticed File:Charles Vanderhoop, Jr., Gay Head Light Assistant Keeper, with visiting island school children.TIFF which is not displaying on the image page due to some sort of file error, however does display when I download the full size version and view it. Works for me. Right-click on the broken image and select "view image". If it says that the image can't be shown because it contains errors, reload the image and it should display. Click on "back" and then "reload" again. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:37, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

How to clear warnings about the source validity of US government owned images.

I uploaded many US Government owned images of the High Flux isotope reactor, several of which I created, others are from archives here at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I don't know the photographers or artists for many of the images (they are 50 years old), but they are clearly owned by the US Government and are appropriate to the wikipedia page where they reside.

I'm not sure what I have to do to remove the warnings that they will be removed. I don't know what "essential source information" is needed for these. Please point me in the right direction.

Question about uploading images

Hello,

A friend has uploaded some pictures on his blog. I wanted to use his pictures on Wikimedia and I asked him for his permission. He emailed me saying that I'm free to use his pictures and upload them. So while uploading them on Wikimedia, I would essentially be uploading someone else's work with their permission. OK to upload this image (claimed public domain)?

Dear WikiCommonsers,
There is an image of a lava fountain on the web HERE. The website appears to be conscientiously constructed, and if you click on the button labeled "Terms of Use", it says that all images are public domain. (NB, although of unclear relevance: The image in question has "USGS" in its name, which would seem to explain how it came to be public domain - i.e., created by a US government employee).

Good call, yes, the image on the other page does look better. And implicitly you seem to be saying that its posting on the USGS website, along with the bits of narrative on that page, is adequate to establish it as public domain. Not the mere fact of it being posted there. But we know that Jim Griggs is/was a USGS staff photographer at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.[2] As such, his photos from the time he was with USGS are PD-USGS. I was trying to upload the book cover for the article "the rise of nine" by pittacus lore but its against copyright violation to upload it. I looks like the others are uploaded to en:wp under fair use. Commons does not allow fair use images. You need to upload it to en:wp and use the same format as the others.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:01, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Modify an uploaded SVG-file

How can I modify an uploaded SVG-file (maybe restricted only to a file version which I myself uploaded)?

Can I modify only the current version, or can I also select a certain version?

Is this a feature of the external-editor (Botton "Edit this file using an external application") usage?

That is how the displayed media are revised : by uploading a new version over the older version(s). But the older versions remain. At most, the older versions can be deleted from the file history, if there is at least some reasonable reason to do so (e.g. copyright violation, etc.). But you cannot remove an old version and put in the same place in the file history a new version falsely disguised as that old version. That would not be logical. However, as the previous reply explained, you can select and use any available older version from the file history and modify it and then upload your new version, either as a new version of the same file (if the new version is to uncontroversially replace the previous version) or as a separate new file (if the intention is to have an alternate image or if there's any doubt). -- Asclepias (talk) 18:19, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
I expected that there is a possiblity to modify a SVG-file like an article! You also dont upload for every modification the whole article as a new version. You upload only differences. And SVG-files are editable text like articles.
Maybe I should question you the other way around: If you set up an article-page as valid SVG-code, is there a possibility to display this not as an (invaild) Wikipedia-page but as a valid SVG-page on wikimedia-commons?

File:DEU Osterath COA.svg editing impossible

This is bugzilla:34228. I can only confirm the problem in this instance. Editing the file description page leads to an edit conflict page, and entering the text in the top text area there does not get you past it as it would with an actual edit conflict. I think you'll need assistance from an admin to delete the file so that you can reupload it from scratch. —LX (talk, contribs) 12:13, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Moving existing uploads into a category (and finding where they are already)?

Would be grateful for some basic help as trying to grasp the very comprehensive arrangements. I have 11 files uploaded under licence as defined by Wikimedia Commons. 8 of these are appearing in the Gloucestershire category and 3 are not (at least I think that is the case). I would like at least to put the 3 files (wherever they are) into the Gloucestershire category to ensure the collection (of a specific subject) is together. Then I can possibly move them into one of the existing sub-categories perhaps? How do I do this simply? I can find all 11 files against the search of 'Badgeworth buttercup'. Hi, thanks for your files! Please read Commons:Categories. That should answer all of your questions. Did you already read it?
You can find the files uploaded by you for example there: gallery. All that essential links are mentioned on top of your talk page (you can also reach that page by clicking the "my talk" link on top of every page here on Commons. Did that info help?
A important note: File:Badgeworth sssi.jpg is probably not allowed here. It is a derivative work of the poster (freedom of panorama in the UK does not allow depiction of 2D artworks). Or is the poster public domain or freely licensed somehow? Cheers --Saibo (Δ∇) 14:51, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. I did read about categories but remained a little 'hazy'. I will attempt to do something with your extra information. Will get back to you if I fail. In respect of the interpretation board image, I assumed it was public domain, perhaps erroneously, as it is erected for the information of the general public i.e. guidance signage at a nature reserve. Certainly there are similar photographs of this organisation's boards on other photographs and have been available for some time. Certainly, they show more of the background around the board and this one is certainly not 'de minimis'. I will follow up on this and seek copyright permission if necessary, or go back and take a picture which is panorama which includes the board as do other photographs I've found. Categories: In short: you can edit the file page of the file which you want to sort into some category. You have to add a link to the desired category on that file page.
Board photo: There may even be photos of exactly these boards in exactly that perspective on Commons - not all files get checked on upload. I have deleted it. It probably will get removed by a bot in the next minutes here: Badgeworth SSSI, Gloucestershire. You could request deletion by placing this or a similar text on the file page: {{speedy|I would rather rethink about the copyright situation of the board - seems not to be okay, blablabla... }} An admin will delete it in about some hours. You're welcome. A hint on categories: your edit - this category is probably not necessary (and should be removed, if there is no special reason for it) since at least one other category (in that case it is even both other categories) of this file is already included in Category:Gloucestershire. One other hint on categories: Originally, your question was about finding your own images. It's OK to create a non-topical category for your own use, but it should be marked with {{User category}}. Does Special:GlobalUsage only look for file links (e.g. the image itself is displayed), or does it work some other way? I thought that it looked for all sorts of links, but it tells me that File:Washington Street North 811, Cottage Grove HD.jpg is unused on other wikis, even though I'm presently linking it (as [[:File:Washington Street North 811, Cottage Grove HD.jpg]], not as [[File:Washington Street North 811, Cottage Grove HD.jpg]]) in a page in my userspace at en:wp. Yes, GlobalUsage only shows file "transclusions". If you want to avoid "unused-deletions", you can include 1px images in a hidden span. That's not nice but sometimes required. Also, when hotlinking with Media (Media:Example.jpg), this is not recognized but should, IMHO. Generally, it's not a good idea to do something if you're not sure that it's legal. As far as I can tell, the only chance you have of this not being protected by copyright is if it's old enough, but you haven't indicated a date of initial publication. If you cannot show that the file is in the public domain in India and the United States, or that it is published under a free license by the copyright holder (unlikely), the file will be deleted from Commons. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:00, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Aad de Roode.gif

This 1945 picture is scanned from a book written by Aad de Roode. The publishing company points to author or heirs. Photographer unknown. Author passed away, only living daughter J.Mindreau-de Roode, also with an entry on Wikipedia, allows the picture being added to her father's biography on Wikipedia. Very slow upload

File upload has been extremely slow for a couple of days. The progress bar stops moving and the counter for time remaining shows 1, 2 or 7 hours. regards Erik den yngre (talk) 11:10, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Hei Erik! Most of us who read and help out at this page have no ability to affect the operation of the Upload Wizard. Try the "Leave feedback" link at the top of the Upload Wizard page. If you write a comment using that, information about which browser you use and other information that can help identify the cause of the problem will be included. Could you please mention the link to the image (the file name) of the structure which you used as basis? That should also have been mentioned in the "source" field during the upload. What is "Medicinal Natural Products 3rd"? Is that the software you used to create this animation? I guess it is some kind of animation software for molecules? What is created (in a creative/artistic sense) by you? Do you just need to input the molecule structure in some kind of chemical formula? Just reply below (remove the "resolved" tag). You can put a so called "uploader requested deletion" just on the file page which should be deleted. Use the edit button on the file page and add this on top: {{speedy|That is less accurate than [[:File:blablabla.png]]. I am the uploader.}} An admin will care for the deletion in the next few hours. But be sure that you either just uploaded it or that it is really and clearly useless for everybody. Otherwise a regular deletion request may be more suitable since it offers the possibility for comments by other users. I uploaded that with its authors name. What other information would you like me to upload. I will provide the information willingly I just do not know what else to put? The file is disputed since the information about copyrights (licensing) is missing. Every file here on Commons must indicate why the file can be used by everybody - a "license tag". Please see COM:L (especially for Internet images: here). The information which you provided on the file page during upload is very good, though!
The question is: does the book author have any copyright on the drawing which you used as basis? And: are those copyrights still relevant after you had re-drawn it? I guess those molecule drawings are that much standardized that there is no creativity (or anything copyright eligible) involved - but I am not that sure. We have the "license tag" {{PD-chem}} for the case of such simple chemical formulas which can be added on the file page in that case. It is nice to mention the original author voluntary then. In case the original author has a copyright valid for your drawing we could only keep the file here if we had the original author's permission.
Please describe a bit (not much) more; include the country of the book's publishing and it's author (that may be relevant). I think it is best then to move this section to our expert's board COM:VPC then. Cheers --Saibo (Δ∇) 23:05, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

What do you mean by "duplicate images"? Do you mean searching for similar/same images for copyright checking of new files? Look in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets for google image search and tineye. Other duplicate tools were here: Commons:Tools#Find_Wikipedia.2FCommons_dupes.   • To request deletion of a file you recently uploaded, use the edit button on the file page and add this on top: {{speedy|I am the uploader. Please delete this because... (etc.)}} An admin will take care of the deletion within a few hours.
  • To update to a better version of the image, click on "Upload a new version of this file" on the file page.

Regarding the second option: 0407shelly registered here on 14 June 2012 - so the "upload a new version" link on the file page will first be available on 19 June 2012 (exactly: 4 days later). At least I thought so - I am a bit confused since 0407shelly already uploaded a new file version.
Anyway, I have deleted the file since you have uploaded a corrected version at File:Suta suta-Curl Snake Distribution map.png.jpg. Please do not use the "jpg" format for anything else except photos. It degrades quality and cannot preserve the transparent background of the original map.

Hi Andy, please mention file names and sign your comments in future. Is your question about File:Salmon Pool.jpg and File:Monks Brook North of Fleming Arms.jpg? I cannot see deletion warnings there.     So, nun bin ich fertig meinen Text schreiben, und jetzt erst fällt mir auf, dass ja hier oben noch versteckter Text steht. Ich habe ihn mal sichtbar gemacht.
    In welchem Ausmaß besitzt du denn Veröffentlichungs-- und Verwertungsrechte an diesem Gemälde? Wichtig ist: wenn du von den Erben nur Veröffentlichungsrechte für dich selbst hast, dann reicht das nicht. Wir können nur Bilder aktzeptieren, die jedermann verwenden darf. Stefan, as the source is "My private collection" I guess the photographer is the uploader who did not die in 1892. ;-)
Siegfriedplus, who shot the photo? The work itself is in the public domain, correct ({{PD-old-auto|1892}} can be added – and I did so now). We have to care for the photographer's copyrights too since there is a three dimensional object depicted (the frame). The photographer can choose any license he likes and that is accepted on Commons. Thumbnails

Thumbnails for File:Geoids sm.jpg are not properly linked after I reset the image to the first (original) version. I unsuccessfully tried all suggestions on Help:Purge including the talk page (generating non-standard sizes worked but is no solution for a file used in several wikipedias). After my most recent experiment (resetting again to the first version), the table of the file history shows a proper thumbnail for the now previous version while the wrong thumbnail moved up one row. Therefore, I think that the proper thumbnails do exist but are not linked to the actual version. --Rainald62 (talk) 18:51, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

I do not really know what you mean by "not properly linked"? But I purged the file page which corrected the dimensions of the most recent thumbnail in the file versions history table. Did that solve the problem? If the thumbnails in the Wikipedia articles display wrong you need to purge those article pages (I tested at ast:Xeoide). Or just wait some hours, days, ... Photo usage rights

Hi. I do a substantial amount of header/banner design work for clients and normally I purchase my photos from a stock photo company. However I was wondering about the use of photos from Wikemedia commons and was hoping that you could give me some clarification about proper usage of photos. For example I came across this photo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dominican_Republic_-_nice_beach_02.JPG) that would be great in a header design for one of my clients but I am unclear about the legal use of the file. Being only the graphic designer, how does one give attribution if I use a file in a header design? Is attribution necessary in all cases?

Attribution is required for everything except content in the public domain. In most cases, a reference to the licensing terms is also required. Image showing up in reverse color

I uploaded a file, File:Nokia Lumia 900 smartphone.jpg, from Flickr. While it looks fine on my computer, when I uploaded it, it turned reverse color. I mostly work on the English Wikipedia, and I don't know much about graphics. Could someone help me correct the problem? David1217 (talk) 17:53, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

I can't help with the graphics, but there's another problem: this image on flickr is identified "courtesy of Nokia", and it is on the Nokia website [3] without indication that it is free, so the flickr account probably can't offer it under a CC license. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:19, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi John, I have deleted the full mail contents for privacy / copyright and spam protection reasons. Please do not post mail contents or texts by other people in general in our wikis.
Regarding the display issue of the second image: it had the "Color Transform: YCCK" - only standard RGB is supported without display problems. I have converted the file with GIMP. It should work now.
Regarding copyrights: Please read the help on COM:OTRS. It is described there to which email address you should forward the mails. In future it may be useful to use the Declaration of consent for all enquiries instead of a own text to make everything clear. No participation

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Greater Bangladesh.PNG has failed to generate participation. The image (an informative map) has no source, background or credibility. It also has no potential use apart from spreading misinformation and even hate. No one outside of Wikimedia projects (namely Wikipedia) has drawn a similar map or clearly indicated its scope, or even used it. Its existence serves only one purpose - using Wikipedia/Commons as a soap box. Not very acceptable. But, to decide that we need more participation. Aditya (talk) 04:07, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Public Domain photo from photographer

A photographer took a photo of me that I would like to make public domain in wikimedia commons. As you can see of his mail below, he says I can do whatever I want with the photos (but obviously, he does not want to be bothered to fill out any forms).

Can I upload it under "Entirely my own work".

It's not your work, but the photographer's work. A release like the above would typically not be sufficient for Commons. We need to make sure that the photographer not only allows you to use the photo as you like, but that he allows anyone to do so, and he needs to make it clear that he understands that he cannot change his mind later. Commons only accepts content that is in the public domain or published under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose. Permissions that only cover use in Wikipedia are not sufficient; {{Wikipediaonly}} is a speedy deletion tag. The copyright holder (which is typically the photographer, rather than someone appearing in a photo) would have to release the photo into the public domain or approve publication under a free license in order for us to keep it. How do I search for & download videos?

There doesn't seem to be a way to search for just videos. When I do find a video, there doesn't seem to be a way to download it? It only looks like i can download images. As far as I know, there's currently no straightforward way to search for videos only, but if you add intitle:".ogv" to your search, you should be in business. You can also browse the video categories starting at Category:Videos. To download a video, right-click on the filename link just below the preview (on the same line as the codec information) and select "Save link as" or whatever your browser calls it. I want to ask a question!. The website Wikimedia Commons is made for people who do give the permission to reuse their pictures by offering a free licence when they upload them. Please see the page Commons:Project scope for more information about the objective of this website. If you do not want to give the permission for reusing your photos, that is okay of course, it's your choice, but then this website is not the place you are looking for. Way to find number of images uploaded?

There used to be a way to find out the number of images that one has uploaded to Commons - I believe it was accessed by going to "My contributions," and then clicking "Edit Count." However, the "Edit count" page seems to have changed, and no longer shows the number of images I've uploaded. Does anyone know how to find out this info? Thanks. The old edit counter stopped working (see http://toolserver.org/!vvv/yaec.php) and was replaced by TParis's editcounter in this edit. Unfortunately, that edit counter doesn't show the number of files uploaded. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 02:24, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm guessing this refers to File:Labrador biały.jpg. The statement at the source contains a subtle self-contradiction. It states: "This image is public domain. You may use this picture for any purpose, including commercial. If you do use it, please consider linking back to us. If you are going to redistribute this image online, a hyperlink to this particular page is mandatory." We have no general problem with licenses that require a link back for online uses, but if the photo is really in the public domain, such requirements are technically unenforceable. (And since there's no requirement for offline users to preserve notices about linkback requirement, whether the linkback requirement applies to someone scanning the photo from an offline publication – and how they're supposed to know that – is anyone's guess. This is a prime example of why making up your own custom license terms is a bad idea.) For what should be obvious reasons, {{PD-author}} does not provide any function for specifying any mandatory requirements. {{Copyrighted free use provided that|1=a hyperlink to http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/view-image.php?image=14791&picture=labrador-pies-white-2 is provided if redistributed online}} seems to better express the actual intentions. —LX (talk, contribs) 20:46, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Probably not. Making a recording of a performance without permission of the performers is illegal except for personal use or fair use. User's own work?

The Mumdo (illusionist) article was deleted under copyright infringement.[4] Given that the commons user Domdom18 thinks screen shots and copies of news articles are his own work, seems unlikely that any of the imges meet the listed license. What do you mean the license is bogus? The text that the image is in falls in the public domain as listed by archive.org. Also, for some reason when uploading images I cannot get the wikitext to stick, so have to select the bottom option. Then when I go to change the information, it doesn't stick. Very frustrating.

I do not know the copyright status for that country (you can have a look in the long list at COM:L). The "possibly" copyrights statement by archive.org is not enough for us. We have to know ourselves why it is public domain. If you do not know why you could ask our experts at COM:VPC if no one here knows in this special case. Which licence ?

I found some photos on internet that i posted on commons : File:Alba11.JPG ; File:Alba2.JPG ; File:Chateaualba1.JPG I found it : www.lesrandonneesdejp.fr, ans the autor of photos allows to take his photos.

"Les photos téléchargées sur le site sont libres de droit dans la mesure où c'est moi qui les ai prises. La seule chose que je demande c'est que vous mettiez un lien vers ce site si vous les utilisez pour le votre."

The photos uploaded to the site are free insofar as it is I who took them. The only thing I ask is that you put a link to this site if you use them for your.

For Commons to host the files, the author needs to agree to license the photos under terms that allow anyone to use them for any purpose, including commercial purposes, in modified or unmodified form. I have a problem finding a license template for File:Hut-man's Book.jpg. I would appreciate help in doing so. This image is over sixty years old and it cannot have any copyright interest to any living person as it exceeds the 50 year copyright limit in the UK. Er, copyright never expires after just 50 years from creation in the UK. Copyright expires either 70 years after the death of the author or 50 years after the first publication, whichever is later. Unless it was published before 1962 and made by a person who died before 1942, the file needs permission from the author, see COM:OTRS. Additionally, unless published before 1946 and made by a person who died before 1926, or published before 1923 (regardless of the year of death of the author), then the book is still copyrighted in the United States. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:24, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Can I upload an image released under CC BY-NC-ND 3.0?

I'm hoping to upload an image that has been released under the license CC BY-NC-ND 3.0, which doesn't allow derivations. I haven't seen other images released under this here, so am I able to do so? Images uploaded under a CC-BY-NC-ND licence are not allowed here and are deleted on sight. Commons only allows images which can be modified and which can be used commercially. --Stefan4 (talk) 20:45, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
As for your second question: The act of cropping an image does not attract copyright of its own, so the authorship and copyright situation for the resulting image is the same as for the original. If you crop a public domain image, the result is also in the public domain, and you cannot issue any licensing requirements or insist on being attributed. If you distribute a cropped version of a freely licensed image, you have to attribute the author and preserve the license the same way you would for an unmodified version. You may also have to state clearly that it is cropped, depending on the license. And of course, cropping a non-free image does not liberate it from its non-free terms. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:05, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

The image is the adapted version of UASA's official logo and the creation of the artwork was commissioned and paid for by UASA. The original logo (which was to be found on the Wikipedia page until 15 June 2012), is registered with the South African Department of Trade & Industries as the union's official trademark. You need to use the "edit" button on the file page to add something there. However, "© Ministerio de Cultura" does not look very freely published?! 1907 Newsmedia image

If a photo was published in an English national Daily newspaper in 1907 can it be uploaded using ' PD-1923 ' , or other licence if more appropriate, and quoting the source as the particular newsmedia it was in? I would like to include it as a relevant image on an English Wiki article. It is the only image I know of showing the person the article is about, who is now deceased. The article has a certain amount of historical importance and the image emphasises that? Richard Harvey (talk) 09:05, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

  • PD-1923 is not relevant: it's specific to the U.S. I suspect that the image is probably OK, but I don't know the details (may depend on when the photographer died). You might better ask this question at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, and you would do well to be more specific (what publication, what the photo credit was in that publication). - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
  • "Importance" is not of any relevance for Commons - it may be for uploading under a fair use claim at english Wikipedia. But not here - see Commons:Fair use. The date of death of the photographer is probably needed. Do you know it? As Jmabel said, we need more information to determine the copyright status. Reply here or at VPC. I would add to Túrelio's remark that given your lack of clarity as to what a 'license' means in this context (there is no 'license number' involved), there's a fair chance that the email you got won't conform to what we need. What I mean for "not published" is that if I write the name in the "search" button( and I have searched it in various manners, ex."George Paice" or " Black english setter" nothing appears but an empty page saying that no files exist with that name - unlike any other of my contributions, ex. "Picchi" - the wiki page immediately shows the file containing that name. Possibly because of my lack of knowledge these things seem so difficult.Sorry again and grateful for your attention. I am working for a singer to create content online and through social media. I am helping her develop a Wikipedia page currently and unsure how to get the pictures and audio clips on her page. Are the photo releases she has for the pictures sufficient to upload the photos? Hi GlitterRose, if you want to upload media (pics or sound) those need to be usable by anyone for every kind of use (see the first section of COM:L). So, usually, press releases are not enough. To really release some media the copyright holder/author(s) has/have to send an email to us. At recordings there are several copyright holders involved (composer, performer, recording person, ...). How to prove I have obtained a copyright for use of a picture

I recently tried to upload a picture for my Wikipedia article, however I am still having some difficulties. I filled out all the information I thought was necessary to prove that I had a copyright, but it still said it was insufficient. The subject of the picture, as well as the photographer, gave me permission to publish the photo. In fact, I am employed by the person in the photo. What else do I need to obtain a copyright of this photo if I have already obtained permission? Copyright help regarding File:Americans.png

Help, I'm new and I just did this montage (my first montage for an Arabic Wikipedia page talking about the American people) (all the pics are in public domain) (each picture has its source listed above). I already added each picture and where I got it from. The problem is that I don't know how to add the licence. The claim that all the images are in the public domain is not true. File:MaggieQSDCCJuly10.jpg, File:Oprah Winfrey (2004).jpg, File:Viggo Mortensen - 66th Venice International Film Festival, 2009.jpg, File:Felicia Day - Streamy Awards 2009 (12).jpg, File:CarrieRodriguezLondon.jpg are protected by copyright, and complying with their free licensing terms is a strict requirement for anyone to use them legally. In particular, you must attribute the authors, and some of the images' licenses place requirements on the licensing of any derivative works to be published. You may not claim that they are in the public domain. This is very important.
Some of the images you've used are in the public domain, some are {{Cc-by-2.0}}, some are {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}, and some are {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} (and some offer a choice of licenses including at least one of those). A derivative of a public domain image or a {{Cc-by-2.0}}-licensed image can be published under any license. A derivative of a {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}-licensed image can be published only under that license or a later version. Photo arrays and videos of WW I and WWII fighter aircraft

Introduction:

I am lucky to live by Paine Field in WA,. where Paul Allen's Flying Heritage, and the Historic Flight Foundation are located.

Over the past few years, I have been able to take photos and videos of their aircraft collections, as well as other planes on the ground and when flying.

Those who do not live close to an airport or an aircraft collection museum, or can not visit one for some reason, do not have the opportunity to see the planes up close and personal, and also hear the noise they make when starting up, taking off, and seeing them making fly-bys.

The photo arrays of the planes and the videos provide that virtual experience.

They also are factual and expand on and enhance the Wikipedia articles about them.

I have donated all of the photos and videos to the public domain without restrictions of any kind. That is any user can use them however they wish to, and without attribution or any other restriction.

Questions:

What would be the best way to upload the photo arrays and the associated video/s for the various aircraft so that they remain as a group of photos and videos that focus on each specific aircraft?

Just up load them, or set up a page or other location, and upload them there??

Also, I understand that large images are recommended, but what would be the best size for average viewers using PC's or E-readers such as a Kindle or Apple???

  • It would be useful to use a consistent naming scheme, but that scheme is really something you get to devise. As for keeping images related, our main mechanism is Categories; if you have many photos of exactly the same airplane, you can subcategorize down to the level of the individual plane (or even tighter, as for example the tail section of a particular plane, if you had a dozen or so photos of just that).
  • I would say just upload them here.
  • Don't worry about the best size for e-readers: Commons' software will do the scaling down to appropriate sizes, that's why we say just upload the highest resolution available. - Jmabel ! talk 02:39, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

I went to the category into which I wanted to upload files. I uploaded some, but they did not show up on the category I thought I uploaded to.

I note that they are shown as additions and look good, but they have no category designation.

So I guess one needs to do that when uploading.

1. Where does one add the category designation and can one add more than one???

2. How does one change or add an additional category later???

Upload a set of 4 photos and in the file description adedd Categoery:Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa

One of the files made it into that category and could be accessed via the Article on that plane which has a link to Wiki Commons media.

Looks like the software may need to be checked or I need step by step instructions on this.

I found out how to add categories on upload. I'm a newbee and a bit slow. Will delete my uploaded files if possible, and then reupload them with categories.

Categories can be assigned to an image during upload or later. To add a file to e.g. the Category Test images the text [[Category:Test images]] has to be added to the file page (somewhere near the bottom usually). So we do not need to delete your already uploaded files. Just the category has to be added to the file pages (in edit mode). Your uploaded files are listed there. By the way: It is useful to add more description (what is shown) to e.g. File:Oscara.jpg. "Front view propeller" is a bit short. Which type of aircraft? If there is a Wikipedia article you can link to it using that syntax: [[:en:Somearticlename|Somearticlename]] → Somearticlename. Cheers --Saibo (Δ∇) 23:59, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

- I have added the category to each photo. - I will go back and expand the description to include the name of the plane, which also happens to be the name of the category.

The name Oscar was the name the allies gave to the plane for ID and operational purposes, like the Zeke or Zero.

- I will also add an article link using en:the name of the article.....

The category name was the name of external link in the article : (Wikimedia Commons has media related to: Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa), Which points to that Wikimedia category and the photos.

I plan to set up a category for the image arrays I upload, and add a sub category or gallery for each type of plane. That way they will be easier to edit if needed to make them more useful, as I gain experience.

There are 24 different arrays of photos and 28 videos of fly-bys of various planes. Also, as time goes by, I should be able to add additional photos and videos.

If you have a suggestion on how I might set up the category and subs or galleries, that would be appreciated. You have a good way of explaining things.

In your text above you made a typo in Category:Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa - if you spell it correctly it works (note that I have inserted a ":" after the brackets to show the link - otherwise this page would be categorized into this category.
Sub categories for specific plane types are fine - as long as there are more than about 10 images or as long as we can expect that soon there will be more than 10. Categories can be created like pages/articles. To make a category a sub category of another the sub category has to be categorized into the "super" category.
If you want to discuss specific category structures for aircraft (types) it may be best to work that out with the users at Commons talk:WikiProject Aviation. But you also can just go ahead - everything can be fixed/improved later on (maybe even by you when you got more experience). Your categorization into e.g. Category:Mitsubishi A6M Zero worked fine. As you can see in the categories gallery it would be useful to use file names which are a bit longer (not just e.g. "Zeroa.jpg") to provide more info the image in that view.
Galleries are another way to group images here at Commons. Usually they are not used that much since categories are easier to maintain. I would suggest you start only with categories sine categories also provide a visual overview over their images.
You tried to create a user gallery - for that you need to create the gallery page first. However, user galleries are just meant for yourself - if you need them to keep track of what you already have uploaded or if you want to show others what content you've created. They are not used to show content to our readers.

I have this image as a carte which I scanned, but is on the Internet too. It is by Camille Silvy (1834-1910), died over 100 years ago, and was taken in 1860, so should be copyright free for all areas and in the public domain.

If it was published before 1923 you can use this: {{PD/1923|1910}}. If you do not know if it was published before 1923 and if it is no USA work then use {{PD-old-auto|1910}}. Just insert these tags on the file page instead of the warning box.
Could you please mention the source more exactly? Just insert the URL/website address where you got this image from. If you canned it then please mention the bibliographical information of the original ("carte") which you have scanned.

public domain = image license free?

i'd like to use image of "La baigneuse endormie(Pierre-Auguste Renoir 127.jpg)" (link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pierre-Auguste_Renoir_127.jpg) i need to print this image(16 pages magazin, releasing for free). i reviewed wikimedia commons web pages but failed to understand exactly. The painting belongs to an Swiss art museum "Sammlung Oskar Reinhart am Römerholz". The reproduction in question is part of a larger collection of reproductions. In some countries, such compilations can be protected by copyright, meaning you would need a license to use the collection as a whole (which is not what you want to do, if I understand correctly). You still wouldn't have to pay anything to anyone to do that, because the GNU Free Documentation License is a royalty free license. Essentially, the license just requires that you attribute the copyright holder and attach a copy of the license.
The painting itself is in the public domain, and you don't need to pay anything to anyone to use it. If all you use is this single reproduction, you don't need to worry about the GFDL requirements either. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:25, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

A general help page on this topic is Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.
The painting itself is public domain due to age (in most countries that is 70 years after death of the painter; in the USA if published before 1923). Public domain means: no restrictions.
The museum probably has no rights on that painting - except that you can only physically visit the painting if you pay their entry fee. In some countries (e.g. EU) there exists a publication right (for the benefit of the museum) for 25 years after publishing if the out-of-copyright work was not published before. That may be the case with the museum. I don't really think this applies here - I am just mentioning it.
The "GNU Free Doucumentation License" part only applies to the whole collection of images (I guess due to database copyright). I think that should not be relevant for a single image. Despite it is not legally required to attribute anybody it may be kind to do so if possible in your magazin.

If the copyright still exists (it does until 70 years after the death of the packaging designer - see Commons:Licensing#Belgium) then you need to ask the author or the person who inherited/got the copyright. If you do not know this person: bad luck. We cannot keep that image. I guess that image is just a scan of flat paper - in that case we do not need to obey any copyright of the person who scanned ({{PD-scan}}) - however, the aforementioned copyright of the designer still exists. And Commons does not accept fair use claims.

Copyright questions

Am I allowed to upload images created under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-alike license 2.0, because this isn't an option on the drop down menu in the upload wizard? Apologies if you've been asked this question a million times before.

No, they cannot claim that (copyfraud).
To upload with {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}} insert that tag in the custom license option in the upload wizard (under "not my own work" on bottom). Or use the good old Commons:Upload (or other upload forms) and insert this tag there (inside the "Permission" field). However, if it is your own work, is there a specific reason to use that version 2? It may get hard to e.g. create Collages then. E.g. {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0|GFDL}} is much more flexible. Note that reusers are allowed to upgrade CC-BY-SA 2.0 works to any later version of CC-BY-SA. Thus, the only difference between {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}} and {{Cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}} is that the former doesn't allow you to distribute the work under a CC-BY-SA 1.0 licence. CC-BY-SA 2.0 files can be used together with CC-BY-SA 3.0 files in a collage (making the result CC-BY-SA 3.0). Those help texts provide a how to / what may be done in case of license violations: de:Wikipedia:Textvorlagen#Hinweis_auf_Lizenzversto.C3.9F_bei_Weiternutzung_.28Dateien.29 (German; adapted for files) and en:Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks#Non-compliance_process (adapted for Wikipedia texts). I have found some photos I would like to use in a video. Most say they want to be attributed which is fine but there is no information as to how to attribute them...no contact information. Hi, second question: yes. First question: usually there is no need to contact anybody for use - you should find all information on the file page. Please have a look at the page Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia - it should answer most questions. If not - just check back here. The function on file pages "Use this file on the web" could help you, too.

  1. Does the upload form or upload wizard issue a warning when someone is trying to upload an image that is an exact duplicate of an already existing file?

I have searched for, but haven't found, a tool/script (preferably python) that I can use to ask the commons server about a file before I upload it so I at least can avoid uploading exact duplicates. Have a look here: #Unknown warning: "duplicate-archive". although that deals with deleted files. As far as I know it is possible to query that by sha1sum. Special:Upload does it on server-side (first uploads to server, there it is detected that it already exists and ask the user what to do). UW does it also on server-side (stupidly not directly after upload but in the last step (publishing). - issues this message then: translatewiki:MediaWiki:Mwe-upwiz-upload-error-duplicate/en.
A bit googleing and searching yields: the DB field img_sha1 (mw:Manual:Image_table) is your friend. Have a look at the code pieces found here.
And I found that in my bookmarks: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allimages&aisha1=HASH_HERE! Works. Copyright help regarding File:NightKandles.ogv

I uploaded "NightKandles.ogv" on 2012 June 26 but the system claims that I didn't provide sufficient copyright/license info while I specified that this video was taken by a friend of mine who granted me permissions to upload the video to Wikipedia. So, what is still wrong with license and what should I change or specify, if any ?

You haven't uploaded the file to Wikipedia, but to Wikimedia Commons, a multimedia repository used by Wikipedia and other projects run by the Wikimedia foundation, as well as others. Commons only accepts content that is in the public domain or published under a free license. These licenses are indicated using copyright tags. Your upload is missing such a tag, and based on your question, I'm guessing you did not get the copyright holder to agree to a specific license. Permissions that only cover use in Wikipedia are not sufficient; {{Wikipediaonly}} is a speedy deletion tag. In order for us to keep the file, the copyright holder needs to agree to release it into the public domain or approve publication under a license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose. Since you're uploading a file that you received from someone else, you should read Commons:Email templates for how to obtain an appropriate permission from them and Commons:OTRS for information on how to archive the permission. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:05, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

If you upload the file to English Wikipedia with the same information, I'll tag it with en:Template:Db-f3. However, it is not clear which language edition of Wikipedia you would upload it to. I did not say that you had to upload the video to Wikipedia. I pointed out that you had uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons rather than Wikipedia because you seemed confused about that point – not because you should upload it elsewhere. Some Wikipedia projects, including the English Wikipedia project, allow files to be locally uploaded there, but they generally have the same licensing requirements as we do, so the best way forward is, as I mentioned, to obtain a proper permission and send it in. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:33, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
I think it may help to re-read the first comment by LX and keep in mind that the same would apply if you would upload it to Wikipedia directly. In fact we daily move masses of files from Wikipedia to Commons.
The essence of the first section of our rules Commons:Licensing is that we (and Wikipedia) only use files which are free for everybody to use. Nein, du hast grundsätzlich nicht die Erlaubnis Fotos zu verwenden, die jemand anderes geschossen hat. Wir verwenden nur Fotos, die für jedermann, für jeden Zweck verwendbar sind (siehe Einleitung von Commons:Lizenzen). Wenn der Fotograf (wenn der Verein dem Fotograf auch die Rechte abgekauft hat, die Fotos weiterlizenzieren zu dürfen, dann kann die Freigabe auch durch den Verein erfolgen) die Fotos für jedermann freigeben mag, dann folge bitte den Anweisungen auf der Seite COM:OTRS/de. Dann kannst du sie in Wikipedia benutzen.
Auf der Homepage schreibt der Verein gegenteiliges am Ende von Punkt 3 des Impressums - das ist aber kein Problem, wenn per E-Mail dennoch für jedermann freigegeben wird.
Übrigens, es wäre schön (aber kein Muss), wenn es die Fotos auch ohne Logos darin gäbe - üblicherweise werden solche Logos ansonsten sowieso manuell, nachträglich entfernt (siehe Commons:Watermarks).

I uploaded an image to wikimedia. But the message is "This media file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file will be deleted seven days after this template was added: (25 June 2012)". How can I add copyright status.

The photo is a derivative work of a photo of a doll, so both the photographer and the doll manufacturer have a say in the choice of licence. You need to obtain permission from both Mattel and from the photographer and send both permissions to OTRS, see instructions at COM:OTRS. Info needed for usage and attribution of photo

We wold like to use a photo by Cataonique on Wikipedia Commons- and do not see any specifications on attribution on their page. In fact, their user page is empty. Can someone please assist me with how to find out if we can use this photo and the rules for using it, we would be using it for signage and on a brochure. Please advise us on how this works and how to get in touch with this user to get permission or instructions.

The reuse requirements are written on the file description and written in the license agreement linked on the file description. For reuse you have to attribute Catatonique, you must add the link to the license URI (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en) and you must publish all copies or derivative works of this photo under an Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. Chemical structures, help on copyright status.

My question originates around the following image license box

This image of a simple structural formula is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain, because it consists entirely of individual words, simple geometric shapes and information that is common property and contains no original authorship.

According to the above template [9], a chemical structure cannot be copyrighted.
I have the following doubts,

  1. Does every molecular structure (like ball and socket structures) gets this copyright status; including long polymers(DNA,proteins or rubber) and complex structures?
  2. If so can we upload every structure on this internet including those which belongs to copyrighted pages/articles? If not, can we upload every simple structures on this internet ineligible for copyrighting including those which belongs to copyrighted pages/articles
  3. What about reaction mechanism? Can I draw the same mechanism that I found in a book and upload it with this copyright status? I mean, are reaction mechanism in public domain?
  4. The chemical drawing program is copyrighted and says "For educational use only". Does this status apply to the molecules drawn out of them? If so, then can I upload it to commons?
  5. Where in wikipedia and her sister projects can we use images of commons? Is every image in commons usable in articles of her sister projects? What about it in user pages?→VanischenuTM12:24, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

I am not an expert on copyright, but here is a few points.
1,2) If a structure exists in nature, then I can't see how the structure can be copyrighted. At best one can copyright one's illustration of it. If there are rigourous notation standards so that a structure can only be illustrated one way (within a particular standard) then there is no way of saying it has been copied unless knowledge of the structure is not public knowledge.
3) You can not copyright a 'mechanism' (perhaps patent?), so you can take the information provided by their illustration and illustrate it, but just copying their illustration is more likely to be a problem - or is there only one way to illustrate a chemical reaction mechanism?
4) I suppose the terms of use or licensing of a computer program could specify that you transfer all copyright (if any) of created images to the program's author, but that would have to be explicitly stated and agreed to. It sounds to me as though if you use the program for "non educational use" you are breaking a 'contract' with them (and they may take some action against you), but the images created are still yours, and any copyright in them is yours. Anyway our projects are all 'Educational' ;-)
5) Images on Commons can be used on any of the sister projects using exactly the same syntax as you would use for images locally available on that project (if an image of the specified name is not available on that project, it looks for it on Commons) --Tony Wills (talk) 00:36, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
  • To answer only your last question: in general, Commons content can be reused anywhere, but of course not all use is appropriate. For example, it would not be appropriate to post a naked picture of someone who happened to be in London in an article on London. I suppose if we are talking about copyright contraints, all images on Commons should be freely usable in their counry of origin and in the USA (where the servers are). But some countries may be more restrictive, eg an image might still be copyrighted or have further restrictions (eg images of a prophet) in a particular country - Something to be aware of when editing non English language wikipedias etc. --Tony Wills (talk) 01:00, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
To answer the original question: you're correct that they can't be copyrighted. It's not so much that they're so simple as that these structures (if done accurately) are the only correct way to represent chemical forulas graphically. A polymer with two hundred atoms absolutely must be represented the same way every time (if you change something, it won't be the same molecule), so there's nothing original in representing it that way. This is the reason that chemical structures can't be copyrighted, while things of lesser complexity can — when you make a drawing or write a piece of text, you aren't rigidly bound to write or draw the same thing, but there's only way to represent the complex polymer. Image file replaced by a completely different image

File:OliverEllsworth.jpg has several issues that need to be sorted out by somebody who is smarter about images than I am. The file was originally created in 2007 from an image obtained from a US Senate source (a black-and-white head-and-shoulders portrait -- link to source page). In 2008, another user replaced the image with an entirely different image (a seated portrait, in color) obtained from a US Supreme Court source, but did not change the file description, so the current description is now completely incorrect -- and the original image is no longer on Commons (although File:Oliver Ellsworth.jpg is very similar). Additionally, the image uploaded in 2008 appears to be a flipped-over version, with slightly different framing/cropping, of the portrait currently found on the Supreme Court history website, which portrait is on Commons as File:Oliver ellsworth.jpeg. Questions:

  • What is the actual source of the image at File:OliverEllsworth.jpg? Is it a flipped-over and retouched version of the portrait at File:Oliver ellsworth.jpeg, or is it a different portrait? (I think it's likely to be a different portrait, likely an 18th-19th century painted copy.)
  • How can the history of the two images at File:OliverEllsworth.jpg be revised to correctly indicate the history and sourcing (and restore the deleted image)?

I know my comment doesn't answer the request, but I can't help notice that the Commons description pages of all those files are terribly lacking in information. They do not mention the authors or give a complete description. The painting File:Oliver ellsworth.jpeg looks like a reproduction of one half of a painting (context) by Ralph Earl (the full version doesn't seem to be on Commons). The uploader's comment for the 2008 version of File:OliverEllsworth.jpg mentions "The Collection of the Supreme Court of the United States" as the source of that version, but the wording and the flipped image hint at the fact that the uploader might have used the oyez.com image (linked above) as the actual source. I'm not sure about the usefullness of that flipped version of the half-painting, as uploaded in 2008 over the original version of File:OliverEllsworth.jpg. Also, I wonder what was Wheeler's role. Did Wheeler actually paint a copy of one half of Earl's original painting, or what? A much larger version of the engraving File:Oliver Ellsworth.jpg is available there (context). Don't Know what to do about the foot-note "Category: PD-URAA tag needs updating" in two of my files. I notice that the same category applies to a lot of files... How can I update this " PD-URAA "? Hi Siegfriedplus, just ignore everything containing "URAA". Your files will probably be fine also with that note. The "URAA" stuff is just some personal opinion of some US-centric people.
However, and more important, please note that we need to know who photographed e.g. that one: File:Andrea_Picchi.jpg - the photographer has a copyright (at least if he takes a pic of something 3 dimensional). If you are the photographer you should license your work in order to upload it to Commons. How to create a gallery page/s in category "User galleries"

When I edit - Category:User galleries - to set up a series of gallery pages, using the language suggested does not work for me. So, I must be doing something wrong.

I have asked who to do that and the answers are not "just enter this language on the bottom of the edit page, sign it, and add a summary entry.

I want to add several gallery pages with the same User anme but /titles such as this for two of them:

User:5shot/Oscar

User:5shot/Zero

I have been at this for several days now, and my halting steps to set up the pages, probably has cause problems. So, if you could tell me the magic words / syntax to use, I would be very thankfull.

This is the language with suggested editing language to use which is at the top of the page Category:User galleries

To add pages to this category use {{User gallery}} or {{User gallery|User name}} or use [[Category:User galleries|user name]] . For user categories, add to Category:User categories, not here.

To add a gallery page I used User:5shot/Oscar and it worked!!!

I suggest that the info on the top of the page be changed re gallery pages.

I believe that the {{ }} entry can be used on the gallery page to show that it is the Category:User galleries. However, which of these two methods is best for use?? a -- {{User gallery|5shot}} b -- {{User:gallery}}

The help info at th top of the page uses{{ }} in reference to galleris and the words User gallery or User gallery|User name within them. Brackets [[ ]] are used in reference to Categories with the word Category: as the first word with in the brackets.

I used the words User:5shot/Oscar within [[ ]] and it worked to set up a gallery page.

This has been added as the software translates phrases within {{ or [[ as actual entries. 5shot (talk) 05:56, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Sorry that I have not clearly stated my problem.

When I asked this question here, and also the same question other places, I was trying to set up user gallery pages which I understand, do not require a topic category.

I have now been successful in setting up 3 gallery pages.

The reason I could not set them up before, is that the instructions on the top of the Category:User galleries page on how to do that, are not correct.

The instructions say "To add pages to this category" use Usery gallery or User gallery|User name within {{ }}.

That is not correct. I tried it and it did not work for me.

I used "User:5shot/Zero" within [[ ]] to add a User gallery page. And after I added some images, it showed up in the index.

That title is in the same form (User:xyz/name-of-gallery-page) as most all of the titles of the other pages in the index.

So it looks like my problem has been solved, at least for now. I am new to this so I expect that I will need some assistance in the future.

Request:

The gallery page User:5shot/Gallery was added there as a help to me. I would appreciate it if it could be deleted.

1. I made a search for User:5shot/Zero and the page came up, but it is not listed in as a page in the index of Category:User galleries. ???

2. As to the intro to the category. the {{ }}'s should replace the [[ ]]'s. Then a gallery page will be set up. At least that worked for me.

Just don't use the word Category. If it is used, a Category will be set up.

Hi again 5shot! You can find all your gallery pages there: Special:PrefixIndex/User:5shot/. You can find all your uploads there: Gallery (it is also linked in the info box on top of your talk page).
User:5shot/Zero was not listed at Category:User galleries since the "/" was missing at the end gallery tag (fixed) - this caused the system to "be angry". Not the {{user gallery}} listing works.
Regarding descriptive info: You should add it to the file pages (use the edit button on each file page). If you just add more info in your personal gallery page it is only visible there (probably only visited by you).

1. Thank you for your assistance in adding the / to the gallery tag.

2. Regarding descriptive info, I made some editing atttempts to better detail my experience with trying to set up gallery pages using the suggestions on how to do that.

I used the language in the template to attempt to set up a gallery page: - braces User gallery|1=|user=|5shot/tiger=|nocat= braces - and was unsuccessful:

I then tried thie suggested language with braces:- braces User gallery|5shot/tiger braces - and that was unseccessful.

I then tried this language: - brackets User:5shot/tiger brackets - and was presented with "User:5shot/tiger" in red and as a link. I clicked on it and a blank gallery page came up. I added in gallery page content, and saved it.

A lolor bar then comes up with "5shot" in red. When clicked, I was advised that there was no category for that. I went no further with trying to do anything about that.

I went back and checked on the index of the Pages in category "User galleries" and the new gallery page was shown there, and when clicked on, the gallery page came up for viewing and editing.

Summary:

I attempted to use the entries with braces and was unsuccessful.

I then used a bracketed entry without the use of the word Category. The result was a blank gallery page which could be added to, and saved. It Also showed up in the index of "pages in category "User galleries". Success.

In setting up the gallery page, I also used a forward slash and the name tiger to identify it. That was done to emulate most all off the entries in the index.

I am new to this and don't understand what templates are and how they are used. To confusing for me, but as time goes by, I will read the info on them again and again and perhaps will understand just they do and what to do with them

I try to answer: You need to separate two parts: 1. setting up the gallery page, 2. categorizing the gallery page in "user galleries". For 1. you need to open the edit mode of the new page, put in some stuff and save. You can open edit mode for a new page if you click on a red link to the page. You get one if you enter the new name (it should begin with "User:5shot/") in the search box. Then, for 2. you need to add the category to the page. We have included the category link inside a "template". It is {{user gallery}}. That needs to be put on the new gallery page. Done. You did those steps somehow - therefore it worked at last. For your next gallery you can follow these steps.
I will try to explain "templates" but you can also read here: en:WP:templates. Templates are like a shortcut for much code. In case of the user gallery template (templates are everything enclosed in {{ }}) it includes code for that descriptive banner ("This is a gallery of files created by ...") and the category link.

Copyright help regarding File:Ernst Kolb, Künstler 3.jpg

Ernst Kolb, 1927-1993, was a german ART-Brut artist. There is a book published on him and I am the author of a wikipedia-article under the headline «Ernst Kolb, Künstler». I found his works in the internet on ebay where I could buy a number of his drawings and I was aND am very enthousiastic about his works that I contacted the magazin «RAWVISION», specialized on outsider art, asking them if they would be interrested to publish an article about this artist. They reacted immediately in favor and they plan to publish an article in one of their next issues. At the same time, The Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, which I contacted as well, were also interrested to acquire works of Ernst Kolb and informed me that they would get directly in contact with Rolf Bergmann for this reason.

Kolb has been locally well known at his life-time, but today, 19 years later, he is known ownly by a few collectors. His work is very unique – I personnally belive that some day he will be considered as one of the few great Art Brut artists – and it would be good to show a few examples of his works allready right now, 19 years after his dead.

Kolb has left no relatives. The person taking care of his works is the author Rolf Bergmann. I could acquire a number of Kolb drawings. In the article on Wikipedia I have mentioned, there is unfortunately (!) no sample of Kolbs drawings so far and even searching on Google for drawings, there are non or but a few samples to be found. I would therefor very much like to show examples of his drawings – to demonstrate how unique they are – a description could never give an idea about it – I would like to upload a few samples from my personnal collection with the agreement of Rolf Bergmann, from whom I acquired them.

Since the artist died 20 years ago, his artwork is not yet in public domain. Since owning it doesn't transfer copyright to you or Bergmann, they won't be kept here. Since the artist is austrian, 70 years beyond his death release it to public domain, then it can be uploaded here. Hi Peter, thank you very much for your commitment! You write "Kolb has left no relatives" - but someone has inherited his copyrights on his works - if he did not expressly sell them (I think that is quite uncommon). You would need the heir's permission (see COM:OTRS) to upload the images.

Upload wizard doesn't work

Hi Richard, please report using the built in report function ("Leave feedback") on top of the screen inside of Upload wizard. It will include some technical details (which browser version) which may be important. Please describe at which steps after which action by you that happened.

Edit Counter

When I used the Quick, Dirty, Simple Edit Counter I was astonished about many "Deleted edits". And I got no idea what this may be. User Soxred93 seems to be not active any more. May I ask to give me an explanation or a hint to understand it? Thanx. sarang사랑 16:33, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Do you want a list of your deleted contribs? There are less than 500 on Commons. Some templates like ÷ were, e.g. deleted where you had more than 10 edits. -- RE rillke questions? 18:41, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Now I understand that the mysterious "deleted edits" are edits in articles that had been later deleted. Because I created some articles (files, templates) for testing and requested afterwards their deletion, the number increased, also all delete requests are counted. Thank you for letting me know. Delisting from FP

I would like to request delisting(from FP) for File:Detailaufnahme Weihnachtsstern - groß.jpg but that file was already requested before and kept. Opening a delist nomination displays the original delist nomination, unfortunately including the results-reviewed template. I didn't know if this would confuse the bot so I just put it as text in the delisting section on 5th june. attribution

When it says "free to use with attribution as specified by the author," where do I find the information on how to attribute?

Move & replace tab disappeared

Sorry for disturb but I'm performing a technical problem from this afternoon. The "move & replace" tab disappeared, I'm a file mover and I performed this prob in January. Could it depend by a markup change? For example, I'm seeing a particular keybord below the edi summary, different from the normal one. May it be true that you use Internet Explodrer? Please use any other browser (I recommend Firefox). It is hard to program for IE - especially for old versions. Probably your problem is related (that missing tab could be a sideeffect of a script error somewhere else here on Commons) to the sections right above you. I'm trying to figure out which license to use -- I got permission from Caronlina Kroon for Annie Lanzillotto's photo and I got permission from Joanna Clapps Herman to use this photo from her family's wedding. You seem to be asking about File:ANNIE-LANZILOTTO-BOOK-COVER-PORTRAIT-110819 c.-2011-CAROLINA-KROON DSC2406.jpg and File:Jo at Doug and Stacy's wedding.jpg. The copyright holders should have indicated a specific licence such as {{GFDL}} or {{CC-BY-SA}}. If not, the permission is probably insufficient, so you will have to get a corrected permission. Remove a file

I'd like to remove a file, how can I do ? In fact, I've uploaded a Codlplay's single cover picture and I've only realized after that this was not correct with the rules of uploading... Could anybody help me please, I don't want to have problems because of that :(

This is a bit unclear; if I understand correctly you recently uploaded a photo to Commons that you did not mean to upload. If so, mark it {{Speedydelete|Uploaded by mistake}}. An admin will get to it.

Deletion of images used only in speedily deleted article?

Is there a process to delete images used only in a Wikipedia article that has been speedily deleted? My question pertains to the images here and here, used in the speedily deleted Robert S. Prattico. Thanks, Kithira (talk) 17:07, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

It depends on why the article was deleted - we host a lot of media here that is not in use on any Wikipedia. For an en:WP:A7 deletion, which en:Robert S. Prattico was, the photo would not be eligible for speedy deletion, but would need to go through our Deletion Request process, showing why the images are out of COM:SCOPE for Commons. On the other hand, if the article was deleted as copyvio and you think the same problem applies to the images, you can always add {{Copyvio}} to them. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:39, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Here on top in small print (disclaimer: I did not design that... - what I made is: linked Commons:Hochladen instead of uploadwizard for the upload link in the German interface).

1)Absolutley nothing else in the tool box, at least in the upload wizard. Right now I just see "What Links Here," "Related Changes," "Special Pages," and "Subpages."
2)If I upgrade to an up to date browser, how do I know that I won't take up more freespace(I barely have over 8GB of freespace as of this writing), or lose the abilities I had with the current browser, or that I'll even make those special characters work again?   2. What about a portable version you can put on an USB-device like Firefox portable or Opera (that supports installing as a portable application) or both? (Both are free, you don't have to enter any personal information for downloading; if you are asked to, leave this site immediately). Even if you put them on your hard drive they will only use some MBs of your valuable space. Nope. No portable devices. I have a cell-phone with a web browser that I can't access because it doesn't let me finish typing any URL's. And I still find it hard to believe this has anything to do with my browser, because everything was working fine until yesterday. Although it has no relevance, I have a 1.5 TB external hard drive, but I can't get it to work all the time because 1)the nearest outlet between the plug for it and my PC hasn't been working lateley, and 2)When it does work and I need to remove it safely, it doesn't always let me. ----DanTD (talk) 16:27, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Support for IE 7 and 6 will be dropped on lots of web sites in the near future. I am not paid by Opera but this browser is really fast, compared with IE 7. Opera is free but not open source and makes advertising at the new-tab-page. Firefox does not advertise at all and has nice Add-Ons allowing you to remove 99% of the advertising of websites. Experience a web without ugly banners. It's your decision whether you like the "struggle-behavior" of Internet Explorer or want a browser that is loading pages quite fast. There is also no reason not to try them. They all ask whether they should be the new default, and if you are not sure, you can deny these questions. If you don't like them, you can remove them through your software control panel. Hi again DanTD, it is really worth it to donate some of your 8GB to another browser. Probably it will only need below 50 MB (0.050 GB). The compressed download of Firefox for Windows is just 16 MB (0.016 GB). What will probably be bigger is the cache - but you can limit it to e.g. another 50 MB in the settings. Upload wizard doesn't work 2

Hi, Starting yesterday, June 27, I have the same problem of the Upload Wizard not loading as did Richardkw who posted today. I'm unable to see where any answer was given to him to fix the problem except to suggest using a alternate way to upload. I also have no "built in report function ("Leave feedback")on top of the screen inside of Upload wizard", probably since the page will not load.

I prefer the user friendly Wizard for uploads and would like to know a fix. My pc has the same IE 9.0.8112.16421 I've been using with no recent changes to any of my other programs. Tequask

Hi Ral-clan, in general you can edit the copyright information simply by using the "Edit" button on top of the file page. You find nearly all copyright tags here: COM:CT. Help on choosing one is here: Commons:Choosing_a_license. You need to copy and paste the tag's code (e.g. {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}}) to the file page.
Questions: What do you mean by "Unknown Artist for the Union Theatre, Peterborough, Ontario"? Best just write the text which you wrote here also in the source field (after "source=") of the file.
Another question would be if the scene setting itself is creative enough to constitute a copyright for the play author/director. Then your video/photo would not be allowed (COM:DW). But that may be okay. Cheers --Saibo (Δ∇) 13:40, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

staff member taking credit for work belonging to a contributor

Hello I have my work taken from me I mean my name was removed and the copyrights have been changed. I have sent you a new release for Mombray Publishing today because the names were changed as well as the copyright. I sent the release to permission today. Publisher is not happy there credits are messed up, by someone making trouble. Also look at the discussion page for militarysurplus.jpg I took this and uploaded it I have the rest of the photo's from the shoot. The credits are incorrect and the image was for an article called West Point cadet sword.

This does not show up under my contributions, and it took months to find the material and hours to shoot, and a staff member takes the credit.

I'm not sure what's going on since I don't know anything about the background, but here's what I've been able to find. I guess you're talking about File:Military surplus.jpg. It looks like this image was extracted by Sphilbrick from a PDF document named File:Cw1850.pdf, which you originally uploaded according to your log. JPEG is a more suitable format for images than PDF (see Commons:Project scope#Allowable reasons for PDF and DjVu formats), which would explain this change. The old filename redirects to the new one. What do you mean when you say "the copyrights have been changed"? Do you mean that the license is incorrect? What should it be, then? You also say that the credits are incorrect. Again, what should they be, then? Currently, nobody is credited as the author of this image; the author is listed as "unknown". Are you saying that you are the author of this drawing? The file was uploaded before under the name cw1850,pdf. Then cw1850.jpg

The first file was approved the second file was part of the page that I first edited out from the full page of the catologe.

Then Someone changed the name of the file and the changed the copy rights and gave themselves creit for the upload

this Image was made by me. I have a full set of images from the full page to the page that's it's been edit down to. copyright belongs to a 1913 Bannerman Catologe the fact that someone messed it up you really should have no problem find out who changed the name and copyrights and should have no problem allowing me to reenter the photos as I did.

Next...

I went to great trouble getting permission from the best know and best selling reference one this subject. I uploaded the Images and again someone messed with the copyrights changed them and I could not change them back so I went to Mowbray Publishing and they gave me a new release for 4 copyrighted fhoto's I submitted the release again this morning to permission. Publisher is not happy.

This Image has be brought into question. This is a new release from the best reference on the subject and the images are the best that can be reproduced, The copyright information has been changed from how it was entered the first time. This is my work I can prove it because I have the originals and many photographs from that shoot.

I can prove this and I can also prove that the image you took it from is my image called Cw1850.pdf.

Please explain how you can get away with removing other peoples name from their work and changing the copyrights to include false and misleading information.

Can you explain why you did this? Are you ready to tell the truth about this?

Yes some hard charges, and some how between 4pm and now, I can not file one file that I posted this information too.

I'm ashamed of some of your senior members actions. I've been working on this for over 5 years. I've been verbally beaten up called dyslexic, by people who are just on a power-trip and who know nothing about the subject, fact the ranking is high and it been getting about 300 hits a month. The People who I have been working with and the United States Military all agree that it is true to the point.

Now I have done every thing by your book. it was not me that changed the information, and it is posted in your records who did it.

So again you have already approved everything once. you should be able to approve it again as the information has be mess-up up by vandals.

Every thing that I've told you is true and you can prove it with your own database unless you are protecting someone.

Andy, please excuse me, you write very much text - but I do not really know what you want. Could you please state that clearly without any conspiracy theorys? At which file name which change? Please also note the reply by LX (21:28, 25 June 2012) above. Then, I am sure we can solve that issue easily with you.

Sorry, I've been out of town for a couple days. Like Saibo, I haven't yet understood what you think happened, and what should have happened. I assure you, we take copyright seriously, and want to make sure people are appropriately credited. Oh good grief, I didn't connect the name at first, but I now see you are the Andy I've been helping for months. Helping you sort out how to upload, how to edit descriptions, how to arrange for permission, and how to edit the article you are writing to include these images. I've written to you several times with suggestions, and cleaned up the article when you made mistakes. You couldn't figure out how to do some things, so I did them for you. The nature of the software is that it lists who did the upload - me. Is your complaint that the image I uploaded for you says that I uploaded it? If the problem is that some public domain files have a "wrong" uploader now we could either restore the original uploads or state Andy in the description (source) and/or reupload and state his name in the upload summary to give him credit.
