Hello, Sjeans!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Did you mean to create galleries or categories with these?

If galleries, then please know that we see around 100 new malformed galleries every day, most of them empty, so that new empty galleries will be deleted on sight. You can avoid this in any one of three ways:

  • Populate them with at least two images before saving,
  • Put a note that it's under construction, or
  • Create the gallery in full in a sandbox page, (maybe User:Sjeans/Sandbox 1 and then copy it to the gallery when done.

If you were creating categories, then please remember to use "Category:Lady Park Wood", not just "Lady Park Wood".

If you have questions, you may ask them at the Village Pump in any of 42 languages or on my talk page. I will also watch for questions here on your talk page for at least a week.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:52, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contacting me. I thought I had been creating categories. I have created some successfully already. I'm not sure how I ended up creating galleries? How do I now turn both these into categories nas I have images set up to slot into these categories. Most grateful for support on this.Sjeans (talk) 16:41, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think I can see what I must have done. Instead of clicking on the red category at the bottom of the picture set up for the category, I must have selected 'you can create wiki page' when doing a selection for pictures. Is my way forward now just to create the two categories for which I have assembled a number of images i.e. they have these two categories in their definitions? Then how do I delete the page 'Lady Park Wood' which is most certainly not what I intended. I presume 'Bigsweir Woods' page has not gone foward and again this was not intended. Very sorry about this 'hiccup' as trying to give some volunteer time to both Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia in my 'subject' areas. Sjeans (talk) 17:44, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I thought. To create Category:Lady Park Wood just type Category:Lady Park Wood into the search box that appears on every page in the upper left and click on search. If it does not already exist, the line
Create the page "Category:Lady Park Wood" on this wiki!
will appear a third of the way down. Click on the red link, and you will then see that the category has members even though it does not yet exist. Add your short text and its parent category in the edit box, add an edit comment, and click "save".
I could, of course, have done this for you, but I thought it better to let you do it. I will delete the gallery.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 02:35, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for deleting the 'unintended' gallery. I will now create the two categories I originally intended.Sjeans (talk) 07:46, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
