Turner Picture Battle of Trafalgar[edit]

Hi I hope you don't mind me contacting you in such a manner but I was wondering whether you took the picture of the painting at all? I am after a version to use for a documentary film we are currently making for the BBC.

Please do contact me on scott.ward@keofilms.com

Art of Hawaii[edit]

That's okay. I know nothing about Hawaiian art, and don't have a strong opinion either way. You may find others object or question it in the future - the situation that you've described with respect to Hawaiian art isn't that unusual. But I am happy to defer to your judgment. However, you need to decide one way or another. Either the Hawaiian art category gets categorized in the general collections category, or it gets categorized with the American art - whichever you prefer. But as per COM:OVERCAT, you can't do both. So you just need to figure out which one makes the most sense in your view. Hope that helps. Best regards, --Skeezix1000 (talk) 14:35, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't do this or this or this. These categories aren't restricted to paintings, so should never be subcategorized in parent categories pertaining solely to paintings. As per COM:CAT, categories "are categorized according to their subject, and not to their contents", so even if these categories only contained paintings (actually, they all contain more than just paintings), they should not be added to parent categories related solely to paintings because they are general art categories that are much broader than just paintings (they can contains sculptures, photographs, ceramics, etc.). If you don't understand/agree with the problem outlined in previous edit summaries, please ask for a better explanation or discuss the issue rather than blindly reverting without comment. Even if I don't delete the parent categories you've added, someone else eventually will. If you want to subcategorize these cats in Paintings in the Honolulu Academy of Arts, you will need to create subcats just for paintings. I'm happy to assist if you would like. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:17, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the wonderful pictures of art you've contributed to Commons - I've had recently the pleasure to work on many of them to add the Artwork or Art Photo template - they are beautiful and you really work "like a pro" , but maybe you are ;) Hsarrazin (talk) 09:19, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wmpearl, please use this template, thanks. see File:A Faun and His Family with a Slain Lion by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Getty Center.JPG, File:Christ on the Cross by El Greco, Getty Center.JPG--Oursana (talk) 08:36, 20 May 2013 (UTC) Hi Wmpearl, it would be very helpful if you could edit your contrubutions with this template, because of harmonisation and because it gives more details on paintings, don't you agree? Template Art Photo[edit]

Hi, Wmpearl! For images such as File:'Mrs. Francis Gregg and her Son George' by Thomas Lawrence, Cincinnati.jpg you could use the template {{Art Photo}}, which is a combination of {{Artwork}} and {{Photograph}}. It is a great choice for the photos you take of paintings, because it allows you to provide information on the underlying artwork as well as the photographer (yourself) and the photograph itself. I've been using the Artwork template for a long time, but just discovered the Photograph and the Art Photo templates. The advantages to using templates is that they provide not only details and consistency, but they can be internationalized/translated. There are several sub-templates, such as Creator, Institution, and Technique, plus more basic templates such as size, date, otherdate, etc. I'll be glad to work with you to learn how to use them: like many things on Wikipedia and Commons, they look a little daunting at first, but become easy with a little practice, and you can often find other works to copy/paste examples from. I'll take a crack at Mrs. Gregg. Let me know what you think. BTW I think your contributions to Commons are fantastic! Laura1822 (talk) 19:11, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:'Portrait of Timoteo Ha'alilio by an unknown artist', Bishop Museum.JPG[edit]

Is this Haalilio or Kamehameha III?

@Wmpearl: . I assume you are a resident of Hawaii with access to the Bishop Museum. Could you please help settle this dispute on File talk:Young Kamehameha III.jpg? Maybe a photo of the portrait with the sign you saw.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:52, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I was never able to qualify the identification through the Smithsonian and no expert I asked knew of any published source able to demonstrate the portraits subject, but the Bishop Museum itself firmly states this as a gift from "Carter" (not sure which specific historic figure this refers to) and is Timoteo Ha'alilio. At any rate, this isn't Wikipedia so all it took was to explain this to the admin that moved the image at my request and they have changed to Portrait of Timoteo Ha'alilio by an unknown artist.--Mark Miller (talk) 15:02, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Identification of portrait[edit]

The painting is currently displayed in the Bishop Museum as "Portrait of Timoteo Ha'alilio by an unknown artist". I would assume that this represents the latest scholarship, and should supersede older descriptions. Wmpearl (talk) 19:31, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sea cuke[edit]

Hello. I am a marine biologist and I and some colleagues are puzzled by this picture you uploaded. Was it taken in Hawaii as said in the title or in Baja California as said in the description ? Because Opheodesoma spectabilis is not supposed to be found in America... Thanks ! FredD (talk) 21:41, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I took the picture in the ocean off Hawaii. My original description was 'Conspicuous Sea Cucumber (Opheodesoma spectabilis), Coconut Island, Hawaii'. Someone else changed the text, but the picture was taken in Hawaii, and many were seen.Wmpearl (talk) 04:22, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, thanks for your answer. We were struggling with other specialists because no species of this genus had ever been observed in California, so now I understand why ! I'll change the settings, thank you. And congrats for your beautiful pictures ! All the best, FredD (talk) 08:09, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading these wonderful bird pictures of species, we have only a few pictures of ... but if the species ist not metnioned in the listing in the main category, usually it has another name now. For example you dont find Himatione montana in the following listing in Category:Himatione as its modern scientific name is Paroreomyza montana montana.

H. fraithii, H. sanguinea

I found this information with Google in the Avibase.

If you are not shure, which name is correct, use Category:Unidentified bird illustrations.

Hello. Can you remember where this comes from? I'm working on Mather Plaques and this is the only picture we have that is not located. It feels like you were uploading stuff from Hawaii on the date you also uploaded this. So my bet is that it comes from the Kilauea Visitor Center. What's correct? Category:Albert Lynch (1851-1912)[edit]

On c:Category:Albert Lynch (1860-1950) you added a dabnote "not to be confused with Albert Lynch (1851-1912)".

There is a very good reason why Albert Lynch (or any other artist) should not be confused with Albert Lynch (1851-1912): the latter artist "Albert Lynch (1851-1912)" never existed. There was only one Albert Lynch, enrolled at the École des beaux-arts, pupil of Bouguereau etc, and that was the Albert Lynch who was born in Germany in 1860 and died in Monaco in 1950. There was no other.

The detailed evidence can be found linked to in the references from the en-wiki article en:Albert Lynch.

Lynch may at times have played up the Peruvian side of his ancestry, even allowed it to be understood that he was born in Lima or Trujillo. But detailed examination, eg this extensive investigation on the boards of the Art UK site, finds no evidence for this, and overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Dates of 1851-1912 may be found widely on sites, but they are not correct. Lynch was not born until 1860, as passenger-lists for him in transit between New York and Paris confirm. He did not die in 1912 -- he went on exhibiting without pause until the 1930s. He was resident in Monaco from the 1930s onwards, and eventually died there in 1950 at the age of 90.

The new category you have created is therefore spurious. I would be grateful if you would merge it back to the correct state of affairs, a single category for Albert Lynch, born 1860, died 1950. Thanks. Jheald (talk) 22:49, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sortorder for Danish artists[edit]

Hi Wmpearl. You have changed the sortorder for the Danish artist Peder Mønsted. You give no reason for the change, but there probably is one - could you specify it? As you may know the w:Danish and Norwegian alphabet is a latin alphabet and our sortorder should be recognized, and it is indeed working on Commons. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 04:05, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote: Many programs will not recognize ø , or will alphabetize it after Z.Wmpearl (talk) 21:18, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Wmpearl. Thanks for your swift answer. I do not know what you mean by Many programs. In the Wikimedia family of tools, the sortorder for the nordic letters æ, ø and å works as it should. And æ, ø and å are supposed to come after z. By changing the sortorder you make it unnessesarily difficult to find Nordic artists and their works. An ø is not just a fancy way of writing ö or something else - it is a letter in its own right, recognized as part of the Danish and Norwegian latin alphabet. Cheers --Rsteen (talk) 03:31, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
