game screen shots[edit]

Did commons have any template that copyrights game screenshots?

Jrc261094 20:04, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You may upload screenshots of programs released under a free license, usually programs released for Linux or Unix. Use free screenshot on the image description page to tag these screenshots. You may not upload screenshots of copyrighted computer games like Doom, Halo, Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat or Maxis' SimCity. Thuresson 20:19, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Camarines Sur seal[edit]

Aside from the fair use claim this work is a product of the Republic of the Philippines, and as such its terms of use are laid out by the Republic Act No. 8293.

I'll be uploading more official seals for our WikiBikol project. --Filipinayzd 10:25, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Länsvapen[edit]

Hej.

På en uppladdningssida står det att man ska fylla i: "Source like a web link or give a statement like 'own work'." --Boivie 06:53, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
/Lokal_Profil 13:14, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you flickrreviewed this image, but it has no license information (it never had). On Flickr, it says CC-BY-NC-ND. Not exactly compatible with the policy of the Wikimedia-projects, right? I'm not very much at home here on Commons, and since you're an admin and the reviewer of this image: could you make sure this image this image is deleted? Galwaygirl 15:14, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is and has always been licensed as CC-BY-2.0. If the photographer changes the license is irrelevant to WikiCommons. Thuresson 16:56, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to have been a coding error in the flickr template mening that the license template was never displayed on the image page. That has now been fixed. /Lokal_Profil 17:27, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tobias Viklund[edit]

Thuresson 22:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Jag tar därför för givet att du såg den stora röda mallen med texten "This image does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the image will be deleted seven days after this template was added: (6 November 2007)." Thuresson 23:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nahuel Moreno[edit]

Hi,

I have been contributing to the article on Nahuel Moreno on the Spanish version of Wikipedia for more than a year. Recently, all the photos have been deleted, although most of them were published in Argentina more than 25 years old (and the others were released for free use by the organizations that took them). I thought I had been clear when filling the data requested when uploading the files, but I guess I wasn't. I must admit I find WikiCommons interface quite tricky, so it is always very difficult for me to avoid having my images deleted.

Anyway, I am sure that all the images that were being used in that article and were deleted can actually be used here without breaking any law. Can you help me restore them?

Best regards,

Maximiliano

Hi, Thank you for your answer. I guess I'll need some technical help, because I do not know how to edit the corresponding tags (as a matter of, fact, I do not understand which are the tags that should be edited, etc.)
Anyway, thanks for restoring the images. Some comments:

These three images: Image:Nmoreno entierro.jpg , Image:Moreno iicongreso.jpg , Image:Nmoreno 1940.jpg were published at www.marxists.org (MIA - Marxists Internet Archive). There's a disclaimer at the bottom of their home page stating that "All material within these Archives, unless noted otherwise, is public domain". I had only added some info regarding the SLATO (International Center for Orthodox Trotskism), which is the organization that had uploaded the files to marxists.org

Well, these are the facts, but I don't know how I can add that info to these three images so I can avoid having them deleted again. Any help?

Regarding Image:Discursomoreno.jpg . It was taken and first published on 1973 in Argentina. It was published on Avanzada Socialista, Nahuel Moreno's journal.

Image:Moreno.JPG was first published on January 1987 on Correo Internacional, international review published by the LIT.

There was also Image:Logicamoreno.gif , which was deleted before (not by you). It was the reproduction of the cover of a book published on 1973 in Argentina. Isn't it right to upload it to WikiCommons?

Please help me find the right tags for all this pictures, so we can keep them within the Wikipedia project. Thanks a lot for your effort.

Best regards,

--Maxijozami 16:51, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry to bother you again, but I can't manage to find the right license for the images. Could you please give me a hint, based on the description I made, or suggest me someone who could help me? Thanks a lot, and sorry to be a pain in the ***... --Maxijozami 15:06, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thuresson, you deleted the Haskell logo (2006-03-23T11:50:47) because it is already in the english Wikipedia. But why is it erased here but kept there? Wouldn't it be more wise vice versa? Being stored in commons all Wikipedias could use it without redundant copies. Or is there a way to use the image in other WP - for example the German. -- zOiDberg (δ·β) 20:15, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. Uploader claimed that it was fair use to upload this logo to WikiCommons. However, WikiCommons do not allow any kind of fair use images, see Commons:Licensing. Fair use images are eligible for speedy deletion. Thuresson 12:08, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding my image of Colin Firth[edit]

Re [1] - the copyright holder has granted permission to use under the GFDL, as found at OTRS Ticket #2007120810007569. Just mentioning it to you in case you think my upload was bad - I received permission from the photographer :) Thanks for keeping an eye out ~ Riana 17:02, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Could you tell me why have you deleted almost all my photos??? All of them had been made by a photographer who died in the 20s...!!!! JC

You do not provide any licensing information or sources to your uploads. Thuresson 07:09, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Four wrong deletion warnings[edit]

Hello!

You have just added deletion warnings to four images I uploaded. Have you checked the sources at all? Those are 18th century paintings. All artists have died far more than 70 years ago, and there is not the slightest doubt about the identity of the artists. No permission is needed for such material. I will delete the warnings because they are simply wrong according to the applicable copyright laws and the Wikimedia Commons rules. Do me a favor and carefully check my sources the next time. And if you don't read German, ask somebody who can. Thank you. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 02:55, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My German is quite good, thank you. Please show that these German photographs are more than 50 years old or that the photographers have released them under a free license. See also Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag#Germany. Regards, Thuresson 03:37, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This won't be necessary. Photographic reproductions of paintings that are in the public domain because the creator of said paintings died more than 70 years ago are not protected by copyright themselves. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 12:22, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: The German Wikipedia summarizes the applicable laws as follows in their image copyright FAQ: Werden zweidimensionale Vorlagen (Gemälde, Fotos, Zeichnungen, Kupferstiche, Radierungen, Holzschnitte, …) lediglich reproduziert, sind die dadurch entstandenen Aufnahmen nach herrschender Meinung nicht selbst urheberrechtlich geschützt. (When two-dimensional original works (paintings, drawings, etc.) are only reproduced, the resulting photographs are not protected by copyright) [2].That says it all. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 12:38, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They are not protected by copyright, but they are protected under a neighbouring right for so called "simple photographs". Please see Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. Please add the missing information within 7 days, thank you. Thuresson 16:51, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are wrong. The right for "simple photographs" applies only to original work of no artistic or creative character. Photographic reproductions of two-dimensional artwork are not considered simple photographs, but mere reproduction of existing content (commonly described as "Abfotografie" or just "Wiedergabe"). Ask any German Wikipedian who is active in the field of image rights. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 18:09, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please add the missing information within 7 days, thank you. Thuresson 18:11, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, I have done something that is more promising. I have moved the images back to de:WP, where this is accepted. Feel free to delete the four images, but kindly inform me if you are planning more deletions. Have a nice day. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 18:32, 21 December 2007 (UTC) Oh, by the way - what became of the I always enjoy taking part in a debate? Anyway, congratulations. Wikimedia Commons has just lost a contributor. --Der Bischof mit der E-Gitarre 18:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Welcome.gif. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Question[edit]

Hello. I'm just curious. Why do you say All alarm bells go off when I see Template:Copyrighted free use? I kinda like this one, as it's the least restrictive (except for PD). Is it the little © image that sets off the alarm bells? User:Rocket000

At least in the past it used to be the first choice for users who didn't have a clue about copyright but thought it was good enough for use in the non-commercial Wikipedia. It was often combined with the lack of proper sources. The template is useful although I think there are better copyright licenses. Thuresson 07:31, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of press fotos[edit]

Hi, my Swedish isn't that good, so could you check images: Image:Husmark pehrsson.jpg, Image:Ask.jpg and Image:Anders Borg.jpg‎? Are they really free use? Anyway they should be tagged with some other tag that --Tomia 17:17, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The permission is now available in Swedish, German and English. But it doesn't say who gave the permission and how he or she can be contacted for verification. The photographer should give the permission, not a press liaison. Also, the photographer should explicitly use the words "GFDL" or "Creative Commons" in his permission. Thuresson 19:20, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also the permissions need to specifically allow commercieal use and derivative works. /Lokal_Profil 10:01, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.

Are we clear? because if we don't, I can give you the phone number of the photographer... Gridge 23:08, 1 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Please forward a written permission from the photographer to publish the photos to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and reference it on the image description pages. Regards, Thuresson 03:19, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. But how can I "reference it on the image description"? I'm not a member at the OTRS club. I guess you are, can you take care of that? Gridge 14:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you. I'm not a member of the "OTRS club" though. You can find a a list of people who are at Commons:OTRS. By "referencing it" I mean that you may go to Image:Moshe Katsav, by Amir Gilad.JPG and click on "Edit" at the top of the page and write with your own words that you have sent a permission to the email above. That should hopefully be enough. Thuresson 15:24, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg[edit]

Hej. Fernan (discusión) 19:03, 2 January 2008 (UTC). Sorry for my Swedish!.[reply]

Terebici River[edit]

I found the image on ro:wiki. It was loaded a long time ago by a registered user called User:Ugo. He claims that he has produced the picture, and that as author of the picture he releases it for public use. I have no idea on who user Ugo is. In any Wikipedia users do not have to give their real name. What do you want me to do to find out the information you require. If the picture is released by its author what else is there ask for? Afil 04:51, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your replay. The question rather concerns the detailed map and if "Ugo" also drew that. Thuresson 12:25, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry,[edit]

but here is the Authors Name and a date, for me its enough. Regards, __ ABF __ ϑ 12:31, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is no mention of neither author nor date. This painting is hanging at Gripsholm castle in Sweden. Who photographed it? Where was the reproduction printed? Thuresson 12:52, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Yesterday I sent an e-mail with explicit permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, but (until now) I got no answer. The author of that photo is my sister and I have her permission to publish the photo, but (of course!) there is nothing written about this. I take full responsibility for this (which is what I wrote to permissions). Regards, Salvatore Ingala 18:48, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply. Your permission from your sister is good enough for me. If necessary, a volunteer who works with permissions may contact you if necessary. You can also edit the image description page to clarify that you have permission from your sister. Regards, Thuresson 21:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My picture was a copy of Jim Fitzpatrick painting, which was published by Fitzpatrick himself as copyright free. I also added a link to the Fitzpatrick's official site to support this affirmation.

Besides, the original photo is still in Commons, and it is well documented that it is now legally in the public domain...

Regards,

Fair enough. I genuinely thought that Cuba had a copyright of 50 years for photos but I stand corrected. Image undeleted. Thuresson 15:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I see that you are an administrator who has warned this user about copyvios in the past.

S/he has uploaded Image:Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni.jpg, which is tagged as PD-Self but bears a suspicious resemblance to an image on this website. I have asked the user to clarify the copywrite status of the image, but thought it would be a good idea to enlist you to look into it.

This IP address is static, so if you want to respond on my (nonexistant) talk page I'll be able to find it. 206.246.160.29 17:53, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The two photos by Hannu Aaltonen are protected by Finnish copyright law. Under Finnish law all photographs are protected for at least 50 years after creation and there was no information that Aaltonen permitted Wikimedia to use the photos. Thuresson 11:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting the Duplicates[edit]

Hi, I'm having a problem with those deleted pictures:

09:17, 24 January 2008 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:The Washington Times front page 329px.jpg" ‎ (Fair use from en:Image:The Washington Times front page.jpg)

09:20, 24 January 2008 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:Dalton School logo.png" ‎ (Fair use from en:Image:Dalton School logo.png)

09:17, 24 January 2008 Thuresson (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:The Washington Times front page 329px.jpg" ‎ (Fair use from en:Image:The Washington Times front page.jpg)

"The Fair use" you have suggested doesn't work, I used those pictures on Czech Wikipedia and it's ipossible to get it work without uplouding them on wikimedia, could you advise me how shall I fill the Licence for copying those pictures on mediawiki, I spent quite a lot of time in it and it was useless... Or if you want to try that it realy doesn't work from en:Image:... have a look at http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Times I used the image as you suggested and no luck. If the licence for copying of the picture was filled wrong, I'm realy sorry, but if not, please put the images back, as I spent quite a lot of time on filling those licences.

Thank you for your message. Every image on WikiCommons must be licensed under a free license. The Washington Post is protected by copyright and the photos you uploaded are used at English Wikipedia under something called "fair use". WikiCommons and English Wikipedia are different projects with different rules. WikiCommons do not allow images used under "fair use" and such images are usually deleted very quickly. I don't speak Czech but there is information about "fair use" at Czech Wikipedia, cs:Wikipedie:Fair use. My only suggestion for your article is to tke a look at the photos at Category:Washington Post. Thuresson 23:19, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Borttagning av bild[edit]

Hejsan, vänligen förklara varför du tog bort bilden Charles XIV John of Sweden.jpg. /Slarre 15:36, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Enligt svensk rätt skyddas alla fotografier i minst 50 år. Det gäller även fotografier av oljemålningar. Man ka läsa mer om detta på Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
/Slarre 13:39, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Situationist International[edit]

By now it seems the last of one of the SI pictures I've uploaded -- Image:Situationist-International-InOurSpectacularSociety6.gif -- is about to be deleted. I'm not very sorry about this, as they aren't essential for the articles and of bad quality.

Nevertheless I'd like to ask your opinion about how to keep this or other SI pictures in th future. All publications of the SI were under anti-copyright. So I'd like to (re-)upload some images from repositiries like http://www.nothingness.org/SI/ if we can add "anti-copyright" to our allowed licenses.

--Pjacobi 00:59, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. I'm sure the images could be kept if at least there was a link to a website who verified the copyright status of images from SI. Concerning "Anti-copyright", perhaps you could use the tag "reason"? Thuresson 12:38, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You asked me to specify author etc. information for that picture. Could you tell me what is the real problem when 1. description is given 2. source is give (apparently web site has updated so the link is broken) 3. Date is given 4. The author (Albert Edelfelt ) is given 5. And yes, it is PD because Edelfelt died more than 70 years ago (in 1905). --QWerk (talk) 21:10, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now I noticed that you had put more warning messages on my discussion page but nevertheless, Edelfelt died more than 100 years ago so there should not be any problem with permissions. --QWerk (talk) 21:14, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The author is Hannu Aaltonen. Do you have a permission from her to publish her photos? All Finnish photographs taken after 1966 is protected by law, see Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. Thuresson (talk) 21:41, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to Finnish Copyright law: Suojan saamiseksi teoksen tulee ylittää niin sanottu teoskynnys eli yltää teostasoon. Suojattu teos on tekijänsä luovan työn omaperäinen tulos. Harsh translation: "In order to obtain copyright the work must exceed the so-called "teoskynnys" ("limit of copyright protection"). This limit can be seen exceed if the work reveals the author's creativity (uniqueness)." My interpretation is that photograph Hannu Aaltonen's photographs doesn't meet these standards (photos do not reveal anything about photographer or his artistics skills.). --QWerk (talk) 22:18, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do not believe that anybody claims that Aaltonen's photographs are works that display her uniqueness. The relevant section is §49 a: "Valokuvaajalla on yksinomainen oikeus määrätä valokuvasta, muuttamattomana tai muutettuna: [...] Oikeus valokuvaan on voimassa, kunnes 50 vuotta on kulunut sen vuoden päättymisestä, jona kuva valmistettiin." Image:Khadija Qalanjo.jpg[edit]

Hello,

I just uploaded an image that was deleted almost as soon as I posted it. It's a screenshot of a home video of an old live performance by a popular 70's musician in Somalia. I don't understand how this qualifies as a copyright infringement. Could you please point me to the correct template to use under such circumstances? Thank you in advance. Middayexpress (talk) 13:03, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Who holds the copyright to the video and do you have permission from him or her? When you say "studio audience" do you mean this is from television? Thuresson (talk) 13:17, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The video is a low budget recording of a live performance. It was never copywritten as far as I know. When I say studio audience, I'm assuming she was performing in some sort of studio, as she and her band are performing with their back to some sort of backdrop or set. The video was shot on a camcorder and is not broadcast quality. It's also one of the few image sources on Qalanjo. There are no photos of her to be found; just screenshots from old video performances. Middayexpress (talk) 13:27, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When you uploaded the photo you claimed you were the author and you claimed it was protected by copyright ("I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following licenses..."). When I start to ask you questions, it turns out you did not create the video, you don't know who did, you don't know the location or year when it was shot. Please do not upload other people's protected works to WikiCommons. Thuresson (talk) 13:39, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did create the screenshot; the video belongs to a relative. It is a cheap home made camcorder clip performed against some sort of backdrop. It wasn't a recording from a TV broadcast or issued for professional release. Home footage like these is also all that's left image-wise of Qalanjo. If you can, please take a look at the image to see just what was captured and the cheap, homemade camcorder quality of the image in question (it's her face only). As you may know, you can open a SVG file in a text editor and change the properties yourself. These simple SVG files should be pretty straightforward to edit. You can use HTML Color Codes to pick the exact shade of colour you need. Regards, Thuresson (talk) 00:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick response. I'm not very expert with this sort of computing. When you say text editor, what program do you mean? Word? A program for .txt files? (I'm on a Windows computer.) I have the HTML color codes already from this page, I just need to create the SVG files to make the charts. Tamino (talk) 18:21, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All you need is a simple text editor, I think Windows has a text editor called Notepad. Obviously you need an application like Inkscape to see the results of your edits. Thuresson (talk) 06:41, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Info: pages from images[edit]

I have been investigating the info pseudo namespace in response to a recent note on village pump, and saw an edit of yours to File:Gamal-002.jpg. Do you realize that search engines can no longer get search hits on commons because you have removed multilingual information describing their contents? EG: the following search expression no longer gets search hits from Google:

Хрущёв На́сер image site:commons.wikimedia.org

This is because the russian names for Nasser and Kruschev used to be on page File:Gamal-002.jpg. They no longer are, because you misunderstood that the goal of the captions was to make Commons into a reference work rather than a repository. On the contrary, by deleting these multilingual transclusions, you make Commons a less effective repository because you hide the information in it from search expressions created by non english speaking users. The documentation for this template mentions a search that still works for battleship and pearl harbor at our site:

戦艦 真珠湾 site:commons.wikimedia.org

I'm sure this was not your goal to make Commons content less available to those searching for it. Was this isolated, or did you go through a lot of pages deleting multilingual transclusions? If so, did you do it during the same time period as the Gamal-002 edit? -J JMesserly (talk) 07:36, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:What Commons is not: Commons is not an encyclopedia, dictionary, guide, or book. Thuresson (talk) 10:07, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you do not wish to discuss it, you may wish to weigh in on the use of info pages on commons, as a whole slew of these have been restored after deletion by admins using your mistaken rationale. Search for info pages at the village pump. I thought I explained that I understood your reasoning. You did not respond to the argument that you are damaging Commons' mission of being a media file repository by preventing search hits on these pages. The transcluded material from simple or complex info pages enhances accessibility of the repository. For a repository of media to be effective, people must be able to find the material. That means multilingual captions for search hits, and it means category navigation templates.

Can we find some common ground here? I very much agree there need to be some clearly defined limits, and this sort of thing should only be permitted within bounds-

 • Limit1: A single sentence from each language should not be exceeded. Encyclopedic explanation of the subject matter is not permitted.
 • Limit2: If file descriptions in the languages provided by the info page already exists on a File page, then the multilingual text should not be transcluded. (It adds no search hit value).
 • Limit3: If an Info page is used at the category level to which a file page belong, then the file page should not have multilingual text transcluded unless more than one info page is transcluded. The reason is that the transclusions do not help searching because a search hit would land on the category with an info page, and the vistor could then see all the images corresponding to the multilingual description.
Regarding the matter of the links on the complex info pages below the multilingual material: that material be might be encyclopedic, but that is an issue separate from multilingual commons/ enhancing search.
Aesthetic objection: Some dislike the clutter these tranclusions add to pages, but this could be answered. The multilingual text could be hidden in a navbox, but it needs to be there for search hits.
Summation: Your removal of these items means that it impossible for the above cited searches to hit on commons pages. What is your response to the argument that we need transcluded multilingual text for non English search hits from google/yahoo/msn search engines? I find info on commons that way- it seems unfair that only english speakers should have this benefit. -J JMesserly (talk) 16:15, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Bhutan_emblem.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Bhutan_emblem.png) and the above demanded information in your request.

Paintings by Albert_Edelfelt and PD-art[edit]

You have deleted several paintings by Albert Edelfelt (See Category:Albert Edelfelt), including Image:Leo_Mechelin_-_Albert_Edelfelt_1901.jpg, which was uploaded by me. From the discussion above I can see that you have also deleted Image:Poltettu kylä.jpg and some images related to Porilaisten marssi. Your argument was that the photos are taken by Finnish photogrphers and are thus protected by Finnish copyright law. The Wikimedia policy on this issue has changed in the the summer of 2008, see Why do we allow the ((PD-Art)) tag to be used for photographs from any country?. All these photograph are now considered PD-Art. Would you consider restoring the photographs? -- Petri Krohn (talk) 06:46, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

attribution problem[edit]

(Please, if possible, reply here or per mail, as I am not often on Commons)

Hi there! I see that you are an administrator at both Commons and sv.wiki, so I hope you can assist me in this matter. I noticed that my attribution of the picture of sv:Lina Leandersson in the sv.wiki article was missing, so I tried to restore it, but it seems that it has been reverted without comment as a minor edit (e.g vandalism?). Am I to assume that the attribution in the image caption is unacceptable over at sv.wiki?

The situation is very difficult because I do not know anything about the policies and guidelines at sv.wiki. If attribution according to my license really is impossible, then I can only conclude that the image is unsuitable for sv.wiki, and must be removed. But I'd really like to avoid this, if possible, as it is a loss-loss situation. Any advice or assistance you can offer in this matter is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Billete_de_5_Bolivares_de_1966.jpg[edit]

Atentamente Luis Ruiz Berti

Changed flickr permission[edit]

File:Delicious bikini-girl silvia (cropped).jpg, which you reviewed back in 2007, now says "all rights reserved" on the flickr page. I assume that means the flickr user has changed it since then? And would that make the image deletable, or is it too late? Rjanag (talk) 01:19, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since the free license cannot later be revoked, the image is not a copyright violation, assuming it was released under a compatible license in 2007. Regards, Decltype (talk) 01:59, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another flickr question[edit]

Just came across File:Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza en Nicaragua 11.jpg; apparently it was uploaded to flickr by the photographer himself, who tagged it as cc-2.0 on flickr, but the image itself has a watermark that says copyright 2009. Which do we go with? Rjanag (talk) 22:18, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your message. It is possible for a photographer to license his/her own photos as Creative Commons but still retain the copyright. He/she is still the copyright owner but must permit others to use the photos under the license. I think the watermark is ugly though. Regards, Thuresson (talk) 11:01, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thuresson!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Swedish photos[edit]

Hi, I am in need of Swedish speaker and you were the first one I found :) I am interested in Gotland and surrounding islands. I scan pretty regularly Flickr for images with free licences to add to Commons. I found this photo from Stora Karlso on Flickr and got an idea. As source states it contains photos with no known copyright rstrictions. Do you think that it would be possible to organize an agreement between Kulturmiljöbild and Commons similar to this one with Bundesarchiv? Lukasz Lukomski (talk) 23:25, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, it would be a good idea to ask the officials at Swedish National Heritage Board (RAÄ) if they would be interested. However, some of their photos were used on Swedish Wikipedia from 2004 after RAÄ agreed that their photos could be used on Wikipedia ONLY. As the years went by, this condition was deemed unacceptable by the Swedish Wikipedians and the RAÄ photos are no longer used there. I have been looking through some of the photos at Flickr uploaded by the the Swedish National Heritage Board and my impression is that they are old enough to be public domain. The photo from Stora Karlsö you mention was taken by somebody who died in 1905.
So, I think it would be marvellous if an agreement could be made, not least about the practical details of uploading tens of thousands of old photos to WikiCommons. Regards, Thuresson (talk) 00:37, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Query[edit]

Dear Thuresson,

I work for a television company in the United Kingdom called Parthenon Entertainment; we are currently making a documentary series for National Geographic and other channels worldwide.

We are interested in using san image we found on Wikipedia that i think you uploaded. The image is this one:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heliga_Birgitta_p%C3%A5_ett_altarsk%C3%A5p_i_Salems_kyrka.jpg

We understood that the image is in the Public Domain, as it was created hundreds of years ago. However there is a certain level of ownership that lies with the photographer and I wondered whether you were in fact the photographer of this image. If this is the case could you give us permission to use the image in our documentary for National Geographic and other channels around the world, for all media and in perpetuity?

My email address is ellie.davis@parthenonentertainment.com or you can contact me on +44 1923 286886. I would really appreciate you getting in contact with me and letting me know either way.

Many Thanks Ellie Davis

Mullingstoropgrounds[edit]

Hi there,

You placed a note on my talk page saying that the image File:Mullingstorpgrounds.jpg didn't have a source. It has an OCR ticket number of 2009070710051322 on the English wikipedia if that helps. I tried to do some automatic transfer of the image but I wasn't really sure what I was doing and it seems the OCR ticket info didn't get transferred with the image. Is there any way of transferring the info directly without having to email permissions again? It's a bit of a chore to get in contact with the image owner again and ask her to release it when she has already done so. Thanks Intesvensk (talk) 11:25, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

update[edit]

Since you closed the deletion discussion for File:Penis_erection_(6_pictures).jpg I thought I would draw your attention to this subsequent activity.

Following leaving the note above I checked the contribution history of the new nominator, to see if there was other activity that looked like it could be vandalism. I was very surprised to find that the nominator was an administrator. Geo Swan (talk) 22:23, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Södermanlands vapen[edit]

Hej

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/S%C3%B6dermanlands_l%C3%A4ns_vapen.png

mvh /jorgen

Hej.

/Spiff sr (talk) 21:40, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Galleries vs Categories, with few photos of people[edit]

Can you explain the interest in having galleries with (hopefully) the same content as categories? Galleries will probably not be updated in a timely way (unlike categories) and this will be bad for users who are not aware they can access more photos by clicking on the category. You can see this diff (only five photos) vs the category (seventeen photos). For me, this kind of galery have no interest. If only we had hundreds of photos for each person... Okki (talk) 23:02, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

«In the absence of a gallery, or if there is only a gallery with little or no content, a gallery title can be redirected to a corresponding category (a cross-namespace redirect).», what is finally the case of almost all the galleries of people. Okki (talk) 23:32, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I kindly ask you to consider your editing of Matt Damon where a lot of interesting information was removed by you. Galleries should only include the best photos of a subject, not each and every one available at WikiCommons. Thuresson (talk) 06:42, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Bartolomeu dia cape of good hope.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Bartolomeu dia cape of good hope.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. An image you uploaded needs permission[edit]

Tja! File:Pressbild Lars Leijonborg, fotograf Tomas Engström.jpg links to a deleted talk page for permission. Also http://web.archive.org/web/20060112042702/http://www.folkpartiet.se/templates/SimplePage.aspx?id=1418 states that the images are "free" but not how free. Could you perhaps take a look? --Bensin (talk) 20:39, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

--Bensin (talk) 00:54, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Image mix up - deletion required[edit]

Hello!

I´ve made a mistake. I mixed up my files, and by accident uploaded a version I do not have copyright for and released it into the public domain. The file is Tzarina1913.jpg.

This file should be deleted from the Wikimedia Commons system. Can You as administrator please help?

No one is using the file, so deletion will not cause problems for other users.

Again, I apologize for my mistake! Stringence (talk) 08:52, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You do realise there are a lot of uploads with the same question (1, 2, 3) attached to them? I'm familar with the precautionary principle, but I would like some answers to the copyright questions raised before any mass deletions are carried out, particualry given that they would cause a lot of disruption to other projects. What should I do to get these answers? CT Cooper · talk 21:11, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is the uploader who must establish the copyright status before uploading, not other users. Thuresson (talk) 21:15, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't uploaded any such logos, so I am "other users". While you are right on who has the burden, one cannot ignore the reality that there are lots of other logos in the same position, and I would rather not go through having them all deleted and then finding out they were PD after all later on. Clearly I'm going to have to answer this question myself - so I will take it Commons:Village pump/Copyright and see if anyone has any insight. If necessary, I will try and make contact with some German speakers I know (the relevant Swiss copyright law is in German) and/or some Swiss users to find out if they can help. This should then be followed by either more DRs or an undeltion request. In any case, the status quo of having one logo deleted and the others staying around isn't a longterm option. Ta bort bild på Wiki-sida[edit]

Hej!

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Thuresson,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:TrekBoerPortrait.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:TrekBoerPortrait.jpg).

De-adminship warning[edit]

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Thuresson/Archive 4, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2014 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Category discussion warning

Category:Famous_paintings has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

This is an invitation to participate in the Swedish part of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition. You are getting it since you participated in 2013. The message below is in Swedish, should this be an issue you can get more information in English here or drop a message on my talk page.

Hej Thuresson,

Your assistance please[edit]

You recently deleted Category:Puerto Madero with a deletion log entry that says "deleted page Category:Puerto Madero (Commons:Deletion requests August 18".

My search doesn't cough up a discussion from August -- or any other time. Did I search wrong? Can you please direct me to the discussion you referred to in the deletion log?

Surely if the category was superceded by a new category with a superior name the older category should not have been deleted? Rather, shouldn't it have moved to the new name, or turned into a Category redirect? Was there an exceptional circumstance here?

Thanks Geo Swan (talk) 02:51, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This category was deleted on September 3, 2005. The request can be seen here: [6]. Thuresson (talk) 22:04, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

I'm new to uploading and am confused why you deleted my upload. It is a photo taken by my son with my camera. Unsigned comment by User:Rebmobnray

I have not deleted any of your uploads. Administrators have deleted two of your uploads for being suspected copyright violations. Leave a message at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard if you have any questions. Thuresson (talk) 16:26, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man, you flagged the image I uploaded as a possible copyright infringement, so I uploaded it again under different terms.I hope you could check it and see if it's OK now.

Is there a speedy option?[edit]

Per [7], is there a "uploader request speedy deletion" template? Montanabw (talk) 17:14, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User:Montanabw, add the text G7 on the image description page within seven days of uploading the image. Thuresson (talk) 06:03, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
